ST. JOSEPH’S DAY AND RETURN OF THE SWALLOWS CELEBRATION MARCH 19 St. Joseph’s Day and the Return of the Swallows Celebration is a world-renowned tradition celebrating the annual return of the famous swallows to Capistrano. This tradition was started by Father O’Sullivan in the 1920’s at Mission San Juan Capistrano, historic California landmark and home of the swallows, and is carried each year on March 19th. Join us for this historic celebration full of tradition, community, and festivity, on Monday, March 19, 2018 marking the return of our famous swallows to Capistrano and the coming of spring – a time of renewal and rebirth. This annual celebration takes place from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and includes: Ringing of the historic bells Live mariachi music Community presentations Special Guest Presentation On Cliff Swallows by Dr. Charles Brown Mission Basilica School performances Flamenco dance performance History of St. Joseph’s Day and Swallows Legend Special Presentation Field Presentation on the Cliff S w a l l o w s B y D r. C h a r l e s R . B r o w n , Professor of Biological Sciences at University of Tulsa Great Stone Church Ruins – Location of the Swallows Nest Reenactment Renowned Cliff Swallows Expert Dr. Charles R. Brown, Professor of Biological Sciences at University of Tulsa, has studied more than 200,000 cliff swallows over the last 29 years. He has written numerous works on his studies of cliff swallows including Swallows Summer and

Coloniality in the Cliff Swallows. Dr. Brown has been the consulting expert on cliff swallows for Mission San Juan Capistrano for eight years. Under his advisement, Mission San Juan Capistrano conducted the Swallows Vocalization Experiment for four years, an initiative to lure the swallows to the historic site through amplified courtship calls. A new project under his direction, the Swallows Nest Reenactment Exhibit, was introduced at St. Joseph’s Day in 2016. The project still stands in place today to demonstrate what the nests looked like historically on the Great Stone Church ruins. Read more on both these projects below. There will be a presentation in the field by Dr. Brown on at 2:00 p.m. on St. Joseph’s Day for the public to learn more about the famous swallows of Capistrano and the Swallows Nest Reenactment from the expert himself. Meet at the Great Stone Church Ruins for this special presentation. A 20-minute informational presentation will be followed by the opportunity for Q&A with Dr. Brown. To purchase one of his books Swallow Summers and have it signed, visit the Mission Store Outpost (in the Historic Sala) on St. Joseph’s Day between 3:00 – 3:30 p.m. to meet and greet with Dr. Brown. Nest Reenactment Exhibit Dr. Charles Brown at the Nest Reenactment Exhibit, 2016 Cliff swallows expert Dr. Charles Brown, a professor of biological sciences at the University of Tulsa, implemented Phase I — the Vocalization Project — in 2012, in which recorded courtship calls were played through a speaker on the Mission grounds to lure the cliff swallows that were flying overhead. Phase II of the project, the Swallows Nest

Reenactment Exhibit, was introduced in March of 2016. According to Dr. Brown, anecdotal evidence suggests the vocalization playbacks at least occasionally bring in passing cliff swallows that fly over the site but do not stay to nest. The next step is to increase the stimulus being presented to these passing birds by creating the nest wall. Research has shown that cliff swallows prefer to re-use existing nests where possible, as this saves time and energy in building a nest from scratch. Once the birds notice the plaster nests and begin using them, spillover or additional settling birds likely will lead them to building nests on the walls of the Ruins of the Great Stone Church. And once nests are built, the artificial arch would no longer be needed. In recognizing the national goals for the proper care and treatment of the historic landmark, Mission San Juan Capistrano will ensure that this temporary experiment recommended by Dr. Brown will not obstruct sensitive views or adversely impact the historic grounds and buildings in any way. Beckanne Sisk and Chase O’Connell Join Festival Ballet Theatre for Coppélia Photos by Dave Friedman Festival Ballet Theatre will enchant Orange County audiences with its performance of Coppélia on March 24 and 25 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. Following a very successful Nutcracker season of sold-out performances, FBT presents the sentimental comic story which will delight audiences with its humor and charm. Set in a small European village, this beloved ballet tells the story of an eccentric inventor, Doctor Coppélius, who creates a life-size dancing doll that looks so lifelike, some believe she is real. When young villager, Franz, becomes infatuated with the doll, he casts aside Swanhilda, his true heart’s desire. Swanhilda shows Franz his folly by dressing as the doll and pretending to come to life. Based upon two stories by E. T. A. Hoffmann, Coppélia was originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon, with music by Léo Delibes. Appearing in the lead roles are Ballet West principal dancers Beckanne Sisk and Chase O’Connell alongside Festival Ballet Theatre’s company dancers and trainees. Love, laughter and exquisite dancing make Coppélia a ballet to remember. Tickets: $42 -$55 and can be purchased at thebarclay.org or by calling 949.854.4646 x1. About Festival Ballet Theatre (FBT) Festival Ballet Theatre is a nonprofit organization founded in 1988 by Salwa Rizkalla. Its mission is to enrich Orange County’s artistic and economic vitality, to inspire love and appreciation for dance, and to invigorate ballet by: • Presenting a season of exhilarating classical and contemporary performances, • Providing a nurturing environment for dancers and choreographers, • Offering stimulating educational outreach programs. For more information, visit www.festivalballet. org.

E L KS B R E AK G ROUND F OR N E W HOM E By Andy Costello Elks Publicity Photos by Mike Klinger On a wonderfully clear February afternoon with a warm sun shining brightly, dignitaries from Santa Ana Elks Lodge #794 and the Orange County Credit Union (OCCU) gathered in a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Santa Ana Elks Lodge. They were joined by friends and members of both organizations, and representatives of Melzer Deckert & Ruder Architects, Inc. building designers, and Hofmann Finn Development Company, the building’s management and construction company. Also on hand were representatives of the Santa Ana’s City Council and Planning Commission. The 2.6 acre lot now had only the staked-off outline of what will be a 52,000 square foot 2 story Elks building at 1751 S. Lyon Street in Santa Ana. The neighboring Orange County Credit Union will occupy 20,000 square feet of the facility. The new building will be home to the 800 members of the Elks Lodge which is celebrating its 116th anniversary. Santa Ana Elks have a proud history of service to the community through benevolent programs benefiting special needs children, and sponsoring scouting, athletic teams, veterans programs, and more. The Elks are also a major supporter of Elks national programs that provide more than $3,500,000.00 annually in scholarships nationwide and sponsor a national “Hoop Shoot” free-throw contest involving more than 3 million children annually. On this day Art Echternacht, Elks Past State President and past Exalted Ruler of the Santa Ana Lodge welcomed guests and complimented the team from the Orange County Credit Union who worked side by side with the Elks Building Committee in bringing the project to the point of breaking ground after two years of planning. He also thanked Melzer Deckert & Ruder Architects, Inc. and members of the management & construction company Hofmann / Finn Development Co. Inc. Echternacht praised Michael Molnar and Emily Ouzts of Hofmann / Finn saying, “We couldn’t have reached this point if it were not for the dedication and hard work of these two.” Echternacht gave a brief explanation of the significant role played by the Santa Ana Elks in service to the community since 1902. He next introduced 68 year member and Elks Building Chairman Bob McCalla, a past Lodge Exalted Ruler and District Deputy who spoke of the first Santa Ana Elks Lodge across Page 10

“Love Grows by Giving” event Raises Over $120,000 Nonprofit Wayfinders (formerly Community Service Programs) hosted nearly 450 wine lovers and humanitarians to help raise over $120,000 to benefit Wayfinders’ Huntington Beach Youth Shelter, a safe haven for homeless, runaway, abused and at-risk youth, during its eighth annual “Love Grows by Giving” Wine Tasting fundraiser at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa. The evening offered unique wine tastings, beer samplings, live music and an exceptional culinary experience from local fine dining restaurants. This year, multiple wines were served from various winery’s including Kendall Jackson, Bianchi, Rodney Strong Vineyards, Main Street Wine Company and more. On top of this, Kettle One Vodka presented colorful cocktails, which were a big hit with the guests. Watertable, Duke’s, Slapfish and Ola restaurants also had booths at the event, making great pairings with the selected wines and vodka. Dennis Kuhl, chairman of Angels Baseball and a longtime supporter of Wayfinders, served as event chair. “Our services at the Wayfinders’ Huntington Beach Youth Shelter wouldn’t be possible without the outpouring of support from local businesses and community members who have helped make this year’s Love Grows by Giving fundraiser a huge success,” says Elsa Greenfield, program director of Wayfinders’ Huntington Beach Youth Shelter. “We are deeply grateful that we’re able to continue providing a shelter that youth can call home and offer valuable resources to children in need.” Live and silent auctions included prizes such as a two-night stay in a Presidential Suite at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa with dinner for two and a VIP welcome amenity (a $5,800 value). Notable attendees and supporters included Dennis Kuhl, chairman of Angels Baseball, John Graham, President of Speedo USA, and Peter Rice, general manager of the Huntington Beach Hyatt Resort and member of the Huntington Beach Youth Shelter Advisory Board. Featured participants included Kendall-Jackson, Bianchi, Rodney Strong Vineyards, Main Street Wine Company, Hyatt Watertable and Red Table. The event will also offer live and silent auctions to raise funds for Wayfinders’ Huntington Beach Youth Shelter, with prizes to include a stay in a Presidential Suite at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa. Event sponsors included the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa, Angels Baseball, Pelican Hill Newport Beach, Car Pros KIA Huntington Beach, Chevron, Paradigm Financial, AES Huntington Beach, Rainbow Environmental Services, Honda World, and NuVision Federal Credit Union, as well as individual sponsors. Proceeds from “Love Grows by Giving” have gone directly to benefit the Wayfinders’ Huntington Beach Youth Shelter, which since opening its doors 11 years ago has helped over 1,300 homeless, runaway and struggling Orange County youth and their families between ages 11 and 17, most who are trying to cope with issues kids should never face, such as early-childhood trauma. The trained staff has an excellent success rate of reuniting children with their families, over 90 percent, by finding solutions to their very complex problems. The Shelter’s mission runs much deeper than just a place to stay, as they provide a place for homeless, runaway and at-risk youth 24/7, 365 days a year. As emergency crisis and intervention programs, the Wayfinders’ Huntington Beach Youth Shelter aims to achieve: family strengthening and reunification, homeless prevention, diversion of at-risk youth from the juvenile justice system, and school drop-out prevention. In addition to providing youth with a safe haven and protection from the dangers of the streets, the shelters also provide youth and their families with professional comprehensive services including individual, group and family therapy, academic support, job/career readiness, life skills and aftercare. Every day throughout Orange County, people find hope after trauma. They don’t simply survive; they find ways to heal – all with the help of Wayfinders, formerly called Community Service Programs. Their ten model programs guide over 120,000 abused children, crime victims, struggling families, acting-out adolescents and people needing mediation services annually. Wayfinders has been sheltering children, supporting victims, counseling families, resolving conflicts and educating communities in Orange County since 1972. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. The Ladera Ranch News

Ladera Ranch landmarks Architectural Edge Not so unassuming, the name “Bridgepark” Plaza was taken from its surrounding landmarks, the Sports Park and the Crown Valley Parkway Bridge. An ever popular destination, the plaza was designed to convey an old-fashioned town-and-country style shopping plaza complete with water tower near the brewery. What does Chaparral Elementary School remind you of? Rydell High of Grease Fame? Riverdale High from the Archies? The architecture of this popular elementary school was designed to invoke the past and yet, we know this elementary school could not be more equipped to welcome and prepare students for the future. Avendale Village Clubhouse reflects Early Americana small town life. The Plantation style clubhouse with its long veranda beckons you to stop by, take a dip in the pool and dry-off with an ice cold drink. Crown Valley Parkway Bridge Spanning the Arroyo Trabuco between Mission Viejo and Ladera Ranch, is the 800-foot long Crown Valley Parkway Bridge designed to reflect the traditional Pasadenastyle bridges of the early 1900s. The structure details subtle scoring with a sandblasted finish, sculpted concrete railings supporting classic column light poles and other architectural features. Heritage Oaks The California Heritage Oaks in Ladera Ranch are the symbol of solidarity, 225 years of history and renewed preservation. An entire team is working together to implement the appropriate maintenance program to ensure these trees thrive in the community. The planners of Ladera Ranch knew they needed to work around the native trees to preserve the environment and to continue to build upon its legacy. Throughout the master-planned community you will find these growing symbols anchored in various corners and hilltops enticing you to establish your own roots in

Ladera Ranch so that you can then spread your wings and fly. Hit the Trails Trails, trails, and more trails are interwoven throughout Ladera Ranch making this community a walker’s paradise. Discover ten miles of hiking and biking trails in and around the community. Ladera Ranch trails offer links to Orange County Regional riding, hiking and biking trails within Arroyo Trabuco, branching from Saddleback Mountain to Doheny Beach Neighborhood and back to pathways that connect to village clubs, schools and other public gathering spaces. Parks Here in Ladera Ranch everyone is within walking distance to any number of parks. Whether it’s a pocket park just down the street or a neighborhood park or a plunge just a few blocks away, each are unique and each add so much value. You’ve probably wondered how each of them was named. Names were inspired by location, topography, architectural styles and materials of the park as it relates to the village themes. Some good examples are: Canterra Plunge in Avendale named because of the canterra materials cognizant of the Spanish Colonial architecture, Hilltop Park (need we say more?), and our favorite, Founder’s Park - named in tribute to the first residents of Ladera Ranch. Pedestrian Bridge Old railway ties create the historic look and feel of Ladera Ranch’s pedestrian bridge and what a landmark and icon it has become. Constructed and shipped from Alabama in 3 pieces, the Crown Valley Parkway pedestrian bridge was built in 5 hours and provides safe passage between Oak Knoll and the rest of Ladera Ranch. Rose Garden In the corner of the Town Green is our community rose garden. Lemon trees, lavender and avariety of roses surround the garden to honor the matriarch of the O’Neill/Moiso Family,

The Ladera Ranch News

Alice O’Neill (Moiso) Avery. Mrs. Avery personally advised on the plant selections and is very proud of the garden that bears her name. Take a moment to sit at the nearby park benches to drink in the beauty and serenity of the rose garden and all it has to offer. Sienna Botanica

Their statuesque necks are collard in detail and crowned with glass that diffracts light through its milky globe. These street lamps are not your run of the mill “city lights”. The lamps took 9 months to receive county approval for installment because of their unique design quality. Take a moment to catch the detail and history of these

Riparian riverine elements of the Sienna Botanica... It is a unique “riverine” system incorporated into the community’s living environment. “Included into Sienna Botanica is a narrow, manmade seasonal creek bed, or riverine, that serves as both a scenic amenity and a natural filter for urban water runoff. Rain water and water from sprinklers, pools and other neighborhood sources is collected in a network of drains that are connected to the riverine within the Botanica. As it periodically and seasonally fills with water the riverine carries water from throughout the community on a course that passes through specially planted reeds and other flora, which serve as natural filters and water purifiers. Ultimately, the water makes its way to a large water retention basin and wetlands in the open space south of Ladera Ranch where it is further filtered.” Street Lights Make A Difference You may have not paid attention to the glow cast upon our local streets at night, but it’s subtle, soft, right? The gray-pebbled flecked columns disperse light from times gone by.

symbolic “guardians of night”. Street Names Here in Ladera Ranch, some street names have a reason behind their selection. Some are named after O’Neill/Moiso family members - Benjamin, Sienna, Daisy, Sellas while other are historical references to grazing pastures of Ranch Mission Viejo - Cecil Pasture, Narrow Canyon, Windmill, Bell Pasture and other names are of flowers to recreate the quaint authenticity of the small towns like Corona Del Mar in Newport Beach. Water Basin The Ladera Ranch Wetlands Mitigation site, just west of Oak Knoll within the Arroyo, spans seven acres and includes more than five acres of native riparian plants, which collect, filter and organically treat urban water runoff. Through the use of natural wetlands, the site functions as a water retention basin and filtration station, similar to the Sienna Botanica and is designed to preserve the downstream water quality, protect the Trabuco Creek’s stability and promote on-site wetlands/riparian habitat restoration.
