Top fashion tips for spring and summer 2017
Spring is here - time to start planning your warm-weather wardrobe updates. To help you stay on top of the trends for spring 2017, the experts have plenty of advice to share. Lynne Riding, who is the fashion coordinator at The Art Institute of Charleston, a branch of The Art Institute of Atlanta, and Dr. Courtney A. Hammonds, who has the same role at The Art Institute of AtlantaDecatur, a branch of The Art Institute of Atlanta, offer some pointers. Q: What are the top five trends for spring 2017? A: “Look for clean, simple lines,” says Riding. “You’ll also see pleats, sheers and lace, and prints - both floral and graphic.” Hammonds agrees that pleats, especially knife pleats, will be big this spring. “Graphic prints are a major trend, using written words embroidered or printed across ready-to-wear garments,” he adds. “We’ll also see accessories with metallic touches in gold and bronze this year.” Q: What are this spring’s top colors? A: Both experts agree that lilac and other pastels are the most important color story for spring. Greens, especially mint green, are also big. “Muted and sophisticated tones predominate, although brights are also seen, particularly when paired with metallic touches,” Hammonds
says. Q: What one piece should everyone consider adding to her wardrobe to be on trend for spring? A: “A poplin dress shirt in white, lilac or mint green is a great spring/summer addition,” says Riding. “It could either be a long wrap shirt without buttons or a long shirt worn on the hips with a belt.” Hammonds recommends adding a modern accessory, such as a metallic bag or clutch, statement eye frames, or even a metallic shoe that can go from day to night. Some other ideas to give your wardrobe the fashion edge this spring? Consider a longer skirt (midcalf or upper ankle length), wearing a classic shirt untucked with the bottom several buttons undone, or an accessory with fringe. And be sure to hang on to fashions with color blocking. Riding says this trend is continuing to be popular. Whatever you do, Hammonds advises, dare to be edgy and always be true to yourself and your personal style. Riding adds, “A trend only works if it works for you. Does it fit your style, your lifestyle, what’s flattering? For instance, if lilac is not your color, don’t add a lilac dress to your wardrobe. Instead, choose a flower print that includes lilac or wear a print skirt with lilac tones along with a crisp white shirt.”

PACIFIC SYMPHONY’S AMERICAN COMPOSER FESTIVAL APRIL 6-9
By Lydia E. Ringwald Pacific Symphony’s 2017 American Composers Festival celebrates Peter Boyer’s Grammy nominated production ‘Ellis Island: The Dream of America’ and John Adams’ ‘The Dharma at Big Sur’ in evening performances April 6-8 and matinee on April 9, at the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. ‘Ellis Island:The Dream of America’ is an award winning multi-media production that includes historical photography accompanied by the original Peter Boyer orchestral composition. The presentation follows the experience of seven immigrants who entered America through Ellis Island from 1910-1940, each in quest of a better life in a land of new opportunity. Personal narration fused with imagery and music collaborate to create an edifying experience that may inspire us now. The concerto ‘The Dharma at Big Sur’ American composed by John Adams was originally presented in 2003 for the opening of the new Disney Hall in Los Angeles. In celebration of John Adams’ 70th birthday, guest artist Tracy Silverman performs on a six string electric violin with Pacific Symphony. In this unique musical composition,
John Adams explores the Buddhist and Hindu concept of ‘dharma’ or ‘cosmic law and order’ in the context of Big Sur, a place in Northern California famous for spiritual exploration and experimentation. Pacific Symphony’s presentation of ‘Ellis Island: The Dream of America’ will be broadcast on national television as part of the 2017-218 PBS series, ‘Great Performances.’ This is the first time Pacific Symphony has participated in a national broadcast
that has also included world renowned orchestras the magnitude of New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic and San Francisco Symphony. As part of the Pop series, Pacific Symphony also presents Broadway superstars Hilty and Stokes Mitchell perform timeless melodies of Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and more, April 21-22. In the Classic series, enjoy ‘The Magic of Chopin’ on April 27-29
celebrating the spirit of France with the music of Chopin, Debussy and Ravel. On May 7, Pacific Symphony presents ‘The Haydn Effect’ at a 3 pm matinee and May 18-20, an evening with pianist Orli Shaham performing Mozart’s Concerto No. 17 and a Strauss tone poem inspired by the Cervantes novel ‘Don Quixote.’ For tickets and more information, please contact pacificsymphony.org

Though often taken for granted, smell is a powerful sense, especially when a gentle scent can instantly transport your mind to another time and place. From retrieving pleasant memories to boosting your mood, your sense of smell plays an important role in your overall wellbeing. The scents you detect are actually tiny molecules that interact with sensory centers in your brain to elicit responses, such as happiness, relaxation or stimulation. For centuries, smell has been associated with healing practices. Today, the restorative and uplifting benefits of smell can be found throughout everyday life. Next time you’re feeling down or need to soothe your mind, turn to one of these aromatic options: Light candles with a soft, calming scent to relax and unwind. Try lighting the candle when you walk in the door from a long day, and by the time you’ve changed into some comfy clothes, the aroma should begin to fill the air. Take a warm shower and lather up with a scent-driven body wash, such as Softsoap Honey Creme & Lavender or Blooming Jasmine & Plum Moisturizing Body Wash. Inspired by trending ingredients and crafted with real extracts of honey, lavender, jasmine and plum, these body washes can create an invigorating sensory experience that moisturizes and cleanses your skin. Energize your morning with a vibrant air freshener in your car. According to the National Sleep Foundation, scents like citrus, rosemary, peppermint and eucalyptus are stimulants that can help you shake off sleepiness and put some pep in your step. In fact, fruity smells like citrus actually stimulate serotonin, the brain’s “happy” chemical. A fresh bouquet of flowers is an instant mood-booster, but not just

because of their beauty. Numerous studies have shown the emotional benefits of a vase filled with fresh blooms. Take that goodwill a step further by taking a trip to a flower market to purchase fresh flowers with fragrant qualities that can brighten your desk or a room at home. It may be the anticipation of a tasty treat to come, or maybe it’s the connection to childhood memories with a beloved relative, but few can
resist the smell of homemade treats baking in the oven. Of course you can cheat and light a candle or burn wax or oil that mimics the scent, but nothing comes close to the therapy of freeing your hands and mind to bake and create that delicious aroma on your own. Basketball icon Bill Walton to appear locally April 10 Sports and cultural icon Bill Walton will talk about his incredible life and new memoir “Back from the Dead” when he visits Mission Viejo on Monday, April 10. Walton will appear in a special Writers Present program in celebration of National Library Week at 6 p.m. at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center. “Back from the Dead” recounts Walton’s devastating injuries and amazing recoveries, set in the context of his UCLA triumphs under John Wooden, his storied NBA career and his affinity for music and the Grateful Dead. In 2008, Walton suffered a catastrophic spinal collapse—the culmination of a lifetime of injuries— that left him unable to move. He spent three years on the floor of his house, eating his meals there and crawling to the bathroom, where he could barely hoist himself up onto the toilet. The excruciating pain and slow recovery tested Walton to the fullest. But with extraordinary patience, determination – and pioneering surgery—he recovered, and now shares his life story in this remarkable and unique memoir. The memoir also follows Walton’s broadcasting career as well as his longtime friendship with UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. Tickets to this presentation range from $20-$31 and include a copy of “Back from the Dead” and two admissions. Purchase your tickets online today. For more information, call 949-830-7100, ext. 5105.

By Rep. Mimi Walters Serving the nearly 800,000 residents of California’s 45th Congressional District is an incredible honor and a responsibility that I take seriously every day. While people often associate the work of Congress with policy debates and votes in our nation’s capital, one of my fundamental duties is to provide assistance to those that I represent. To make sure that you get the help you need, my district office in Irvine is available to offer a variety of constituent services and to be a local resource for anyone facing issues with the federal government. I often hear from constituents about the roadblocks that they face when dealing with government agencies, especially the Social Security Administration (SSA), Medicare, Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Whether you are a Veteran unable to get answers about your pending VA claims, a senior who has not received your retirement or disability benefits in a timely manner, or someone else who just cannot get your issue addressed, my staff is ready to help cut through the red tape and find you the answers you deserve. The federal government can be difficult to navigate, but my office is here to help you.
Some of the other common areas that I can assist with include: Passports & Visas Postal Service Military Records Housing Federal Grants Student Loans Small Business I am also committed to making sure that our students have the opportunities that they need to succeed and follow their passions. For those interested in serving our nation, I have the distinct privilege of nominating talented high school students each year to attend one of
the U.S. service academies, such as the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. For students who are interested in learning more about Congress or pursuing careers in government, both my Irvine and Washington, D.C. offices offer educational internships that will give you the experience and confidence that you need to make decisions about your future. We also sponsor a number of local competitions each year that encourage high school students to be creative and innovative. Right now, the 2017 Congressional High School Art Competition is underway at my office, and we’re accepting
submissions through April 25th. These are just some of the ways that I can serve you. If you ever need assistance with a federal agency, are interested in any of these opportunities, or have any other questions, I hope you will not hesitate to contact me at 949-263-8703 or by visiting walters.house.gov. Mimi Walters represents California’s 45th Congressional District, which includes the cities and communities of Irvine, Tustin, North Tustin, Orange, Villa Park, Anaheim Hills, Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, Laguna Hills, Laguna Woods, Rancho Santa Margarita, and Coto de Caza.

If you’re looking for ways to bring some extra energy to your lifestyle and shake up your routine as spring rolls around, you may be surprised to find how seemingly simple changes can make a big difference. Sometimes all you need is a little change in your daily routine or a small adjustment to jump-start a fresh take on life. Ideas don’t have to be big to be impactful. Sign up for a fitness class. When your workout regimen feels repetitive, it’s hard to stay motivated. One way to wake up your workout is to enroll in a new class, where you can learn new moves and put your muscles to work in new ways. Make your down time productive. Your idle time may be minimal, so it’s all the more reason to fill those hours with productive activities that make you happy. If you’re looking to take on a new hobby, now’s the time to commit to your newfound passion, whether it’s understanding the ins and outs of digital photography or volunteering for a cause close to your heart. Improve your oral health. Maintaining your overall health includes your mouth too. An option like Colgate Total Advanced Health Mouthwash can help you take charge of your oral health. This mouthwash is the first oral care product to contain dual-layer technology that combines freshening power with germ killing ingredients – simply shake to activate and see the results in the sink. Learn more at ColgateTotal.com. Invest in a quality mattress. Giving yourself a good night of sleep is one of the most important things you can do to improve your overall health. That’s because your sleeping hours are when your body works to repair and rejuvenate from the tolls
of daily living. If your mattress is outdated or saggy, upgrade for better rest and better health. Explore a new look. A fresh makeup shade or a new hairstyle can give you confidence and put you on a path toward looking as great as you feel. Changes don’t have to be bold or dramatic to make a difference. Simply switching up your eye shadow or lipstick can transform your look for an extra boost inside and out. Redecorate a room in your home. Whether it’s a favorite space or a room you avoid because it needs some TLC, changing the appearance of your environment can create a place for you to feel at home, and that’s simply good for the mind and soul.
Create an oasis for relaxing or a more productive work space and you’ll not only see the results, you’ll feel good when you’re using the space, too. Make more time to socialize. Breaking up your regular schedule can give you the variety you need to unplug and enjoy the lighter side of life. Make plans with friends for no special reason; simply enjoy the company and unwind. Adding some pep to your step doesn’t have to mean major changes. Just a few adjustments can have you breaking out of an old pattern and stepping into a healthier lifestyle with ease. Table for 10 Raises $300,000 for the teen project and Vocational Visions Jeff Nixon and Diana De Bruhl with Julie Hefner and Brian Abraham Photos by Bob Hodson and Tony Lattimore Table for 10, benefiting two deserving nonprofits in the area, held its 11th annual culinary spectacular for a sold-out crowd of 350 guests at Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa in Dana Point. The evening was one of the most extravangant events that I’ve been to and seriously one of my favorites. The event is definitely for gourmet food and fine wine lovers – the perfect place to experience a culinary decadence second to none. Among those attending who were integral to its success were The Teen Project Founder Lauri Burns and Vocational Visions Executive Director Joan McKinney, as well as Title Sponsor Legacy Pharmaceuticals International, represented by Chairman/CEO Mike Danzi, and Ed Lee, co-founder of Mike Danzi, Here he is with his Chef Host Pascal Olhats and Wahoo Fish Taco. Danzi was presented the Angel Sponsor Award for his honorary Chef’s Jacket! Chef Salvatore Giuliano company’s outstanding support of the event. The Venue Host Chef was Salvatore Giuliano from Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa, with Adam Navidi from Oceans & Earth and Future Foods Farm serving as Event Executive Chef Chair. Event Chair Kristin Martin presented Navidi with an award for his 11 years supporting the event - the only chef to do so. An event highlight was the testimony by Vanessa Gray, who thanked Lauri Burns and The Teen Project for “saving my life,” as she put it. Growing up in an abusive home, she aged out of the foster care system at 18 and was on the streets for five years before she found a home, drug treatment and a scholarship for technology school through the nonprofit. Today, she is employed in marketing with a management company. “I now know my purpose in life,” she said. Vocational Visions’ programs, services and personalized support develops the talents of adults with disabilities by creating pathways to employment, life-long learning and social inclusion. The Teen Project provides teens aging out of the foster care system the resources and support of an intact family to allow them to successfully transition to adulthood. When you renovate an older home, the goal is not always to replace old with new. In fact, some renovations are all about preserving the past with a design that reflects and pays respect to the yesteryear features that make your home unique. Whether you’re planning a renovation for a 60-year-old home, or working to infuse some retro charm into a newer place, the ultimate goal is capturing the nostalgic feel of older homes: the classic lines, hardwood, moldings and woodwork, and features like fireplaces or stonework, bannisters or windows and doors. The kitchen can be a particularly challenging room to renovate because the blend of old charm with modern convenience and functionality can seem at complete odds. These ideas from the design experts at Elmira Stove Works can help you combine practical function with timeless features for a room filled with character and purpose. Keep cabinet facades true to the era. Updating the cabinets is practically a necessity for any vintage kitchen remodel. Although many older kitchens lacked the cabinet space modern homeowners desire, you can still achieve a retro look with ample storage by focusing more
on the shape and style than on the quantity. With this approach, you can add as much storage and as many functional amenities as your space allows while still capturing the right look for the era. Opt for sleek and understated styles, or for some extra flair incorporate exaggerated angles and curves common to mid-century design. Material and color options abound, so you’re free to go bold and glossy or more subdued. Design with a focal point in mind. In a retro kitchen, standout elements such as colorful appliances can enhance the space and act as a focal point in the room. Stainless steel has become almost “default” in kitchens from coast to coast. Whether your home is on the beach, in the mountains or in a suburban neighborhood, for those who find beauty in the past, choosing a retro refrigerator or a vintage stove might be a better choice. These appliances act as a major design element in the space, and fortunately there are plenty of options when it comes to retro appliances with exciting pops of color. One example is the Northstar line offered by Elmira Stove Works, which offers the ideal blend of form plus function: soft lines, rounded corners and refreshing
