Time Change for spring 2018 is this weekend By Mary Zeiher When does the time change for Spring 2018? That time change question seems to be something that a lot of people are asking themselves. For this year, 2018, the time change will occur on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 2 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. And remember for the time change 2018 this spring you will “spring forward”, or move your clocks ahead one hour. It is easy to remember which way to move your clocks if you follow the old adage of, in the spring you “Spring forward” and in the fall you “Fall back”. Remember that the way this whole time change thing is setup is as follows: At 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March each year, we set our clocks forward one hour ahead of Standard Time (“Spring forward”). Then at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November each year we “Fall back” and we set our clocks back one hour and this returns us to Standard Time. Daylight Saving Time was actually put in place during World War I in the United States as a way to save energy for the war production. By changing the time it made for longer days between April and October.
Then again during World War II the government required the states to perform the instituted time change. But then after the wars the states were free to choose whether or not they wanted to institute the Daylight Savings time or not. But by 1966, Congress got involved and passed the Uniform Time Act, which then dictated the length of Daylight Saving Time. These longer days do mean that we use less energy as a country in lighting our homes and businesses. In 2005, Congress came along again and passed the Energy Policy Act. That started that starting in 2007 that Daylight Saving Time would be four weeks longer. The thought process was that we would be able to save approximately 10,000 barrels of oil each day through reducing power requirements of businesses. But that is a very difficult metric to verify and to know if we are seeing the savings that was projected. So, when does the time change for spring 2018? Just remember that on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 2 a.m. Eastern Standard Time you will set your clocks back one hour. The Ladera Ranch News

Red Cross Says Test Smoke Alarms and Turn Clocks Ahead for Daylight Saving Time Working Smoke Alarms Cut the Risk of Dying from a Home Fire in Half Daylight Saving Time is this weekend and the American Red Cross reminds remind everyone to TEST the batteries in their smoke alarms as they TURN their clocks ahead an hour. “It’s important for everyone to make sure their household is ready,” said Linda E. Voss, CEO, American Red Cross Desert to the Sea Region. “A disaster like a home fire can happen anywhere, at any time. We urge people to take these steps now and know what they should do if an emergency occurs.” Check smoke alarm batteries. Test smoke alarms once a month. Change the batteries at least once a year – if your model requires it. Place smoke alarms on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Install smoke alarms. If someone doesn’t have smoke alarms, install them. At a minimum, put one on every level of the home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Check local building codes for additional requirements. Practice an escape plan. Make sure everyone in the family knows how to get out of every room and how to get out of the home in less than two minutes. Get a kit. Keep disaster supplies in an easy-to-carry bag to use at home or carry in case ordered to evacuate. Make a plan. Have all household members plan what steps they should take if an emergency occurs. Be informed. Learn what emergencies can occur in the area and how officials notify residents should a disaster occur. RED CROSS APPS People can download the all-inclusive Red Cross
Emergency app which combines more than 35 emergency alerts to help keep the user safe. And there is a special mobile app - Monster Guard - designed for kids, teaching them to prepare for emergencies at home by playing an engaging game. Users can find the apps in smartphone app stores by searching for the American Red Cross or going to redcross.org/ apps. HOME FIRE CAMPAIGN Seven times a day someone in this country dies in a fire. The Red Cross has been working to reduce that number through its Home Fire Campaign, a multi-year effort to reduce the number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent. Launched in October of 2014, the Red Cross and thousands of campaign partners have helped save many lives through the effort, as well as installing 1.1 million smoke alarms in homes all across the country. Here in the Desert to the Sea region, which encompasses Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, the Red Cross has installed more than 8,000 smoke alarms in fiscal year 2018. WHAT PEOPLE CAN DO People

Award-winning interior designer reveals 5 ways to a must-have media room It’s hard to believe that at one time, Americans watched television by huddling around a small box with poor picture quality and sound. Even nicer televisions were tucked in the corner of living rooms where noise from the kitchen, kids running around the house and other distractions constantly interfered. How we watch television and movies at home has greatly changed in the past decade. Today’s consumergrade audiovisual technology is a full-body, multi-sensory experience. The sound, visuals and comfortable seating achieved in home theaters rival, and sometimes exceed, that of movie theaters. Media rooms are no longer the luxury of the wealthy. They have become a standard in many middle class households throughout the country, and are on the top of the list for many people remodeling their homes. Today, the media room has become a multipurpose space where families can watch a movie together, kids can play their video games or friends can congregate to watch the big game. Whatever your interest, a newly renovated media room can provide the right space for your gathering. But to achieve the ultimate experience, there’s more than just the latest digital gadgets and comfy seating to consider. To design the proper media room, TV personality and award-
winning interior designer Anitra Mecadon offers the following tips. Start at the studs. You’ll probably spend the majority of your time deciding what kind of screen and speaker components to install, but no matter how cutting edge your audiovisual equipment is, you have to properly house it in order to realize its full potential. For this, your media room needs the right walls. Just like Ultra High Definition (UHD) technology represents how far televisions have come, PURPLE SoundBreak XP drywall made by National Gypsum represents how far drywall technology has advanced. This revolutionary drywall reduces the noise heard between rooms. This means you won’t be disturbed by the dishwasher or washing machine while watching your favorite movies. And likewise, people in other rooms won’t hear those powerful speakers! Hire an expert. Even if you’re savvy with electronics and have set up speakers and receivers in the past, play it safe and hire an expert to properly install all the components in your media room. You might need more powerful circuits installed, or an expert’s touch to perfectly balance and sync the sound between your television, speaker and receiver. Plus, they’ll know how to conceal wires and give your room that clean look. Protect your investment. Many media rooms are in a basement
where mold and moisture are a constant threat. The space needs to remain dry to provide a healthy environment. To keep your family and valuable electronics safe, it’s a wise idea to put up drywall that can actively guard against these dangers. PURPLE XP drywall made by National Gypsum is mold and moisture resistant, providing added protection for your investment. Buy a television. Because you want more of a movie theater feel, you may be tempted to buy a projector and a screen. But most people who do this end up replacing it with a television. Why? A high resolution smart TV ultimately provides more clarity, better picture and 3D.

Make sure you have the right lighting. From color-changing LED lightbulbs to dimmers on sound bars, there is no end to how creative you can get with the lighting in your media room. No matter what you do, be sure you can control the light in order to accommodate a variety of situations: dark for the dramatic scenes and just enough light for when the pizza arrives. To really achieve the full effect that a modern media room can offer, tear down the walls and start at the studs. The right drywall is as important as the right speaker. Stallions’ Girls Soccer First to Win League in San Juan Hills History San Juan Hills Stallions Crush Mission Viejo Diablos 2-1 to Win Championship
By: Keila Astono, Reporter After a particularly hard-fought season, Stallions’ girls varsity soccer finally brought home a title for San Juan Hills High. On February 7, Stallions crushed the Mission Viejo Diablos by 2-1 in enemy territory to claim the spot as Sea View League Champions for the first time in school history. The potential outcome of this game was a complete toss-up between two similarly strong teams: Stallions came into this last league match with a record of 4 wins and 3 ties, while the Diablos followed suit with 3 wins, 2 ties, and 2 losses. But wasn’t the first time the two have met head to head this year—just two and a half weeks before, they left the field with 0-0 in a conference game on January 22. In fact, San Juan’s first half of the season consisted of three repeated 0-0 ties, with the exception of only one win. While their record had the attributes of a firm defense, they still sat at second place by the end of the first round of league under Trabuco Hills High and needed a push to break through to the top. So what changed ever since the last the teams met? A shift of the 11 starters was implemented by the coaching staff, who knew an adjustment of strategy was due in order to strike effectively. “We still stuck with the same 11, but we moved Megan McClellan into the midfield and Erin Sulfaro to center forward,” Head Coach Farrel Moore shared. “Moving Megan into the midfield gave us more distribution and moving Erin up top gave us more pace, speed, and aggression.” Not to ignore defense, where a lot of credit is due to senior Erika Wiles and sophomore Elyse Hall who formed a center back partnership that held the spine of the team. Where offense struggled to find their flow during the first round, defense proved as a consistent asset throughout the whole of the season, giving up only 2 goals out of the 8 league games. But changes that affected how the team performed sourced beyond tactics and from a drive within the girls themselves. For many of them, this season was their last year ever playing competitive soccer. 12 out of the 23 girls are seniors, meaning this was their final chance to leave their legacy at San Juan. As they realized that winning league was not far from sight, the girls were determined to turn around their record and write their own fate. They labeled this year early on as “banner season,” hoping this year would be the one to seal their victory and kept reciting the phrase, a show of their eagerness for the title. They truly played with heart at the turn of the rounds, and were driven with insatiable hunger to attack with more vigor. Coach Moore admitted that the “number one reason for success was Page 10

What made us successful was not only the hard work we put on the field but the bond we made off the field. We all genuinely cared for each other in all aspects, not just in soccer,” said Rebecca, who led the team in playing time with 1,522 minutes. “8 Over 80” Are Honored at Heritage Pointe Gala
The Ladera Ranch News
Beth Slavin, Director of Philanthropy for Heritage Pointe, Mike Photos by Ann Chatillon Silverman, CEO of Heritage Pointe, ‘8 OVER 80’ Honorees Barbara and Heritage Pointe, Orange County’s premier independent, assisted-living and memory care Senior community, hosted its 28th Annual Fundraising Gala Dr. Joe Lebovitz “8 OVER 80” in grand style at the elegant Island Hotel in Newport Beach rasing $200,000 for the nonprofit. The festivities began with a sumptuous cocktail reception in the foyer of the Grand Ballroom, followed by a delectable four course dinner inside the elegant Grand Ballroom, with over 500 guests in attendance at this not-tobe-missed annual Gala. Barbara Shapiro, well-known Orange County philanthropist, Chaired this year’s gala, joined by her committee consisting of long-time Heritage Pointe Board member, Roberta Feuerstein, Ann Miller, and Elana Samson. All four of these women have lent their tremendous support to many organizations within the Orange County Jewish community, and Heritage Pointe was extremely fortunate to have them all serve for this auspicious and celebratory event. “It is an honor to have been asked to Chair this very significant event, recognizing eight outstanding individuals who are in their 80s, and who have continued to give back to their community in so many ways,” stated Event Chair Barbara Shapiro. “I try to be someone who would have made my Mother and Grandmother, of blessed memory, proud. Because I lost them at a young age, I appreciate the wisdom of my elders. You learn a lot spending time with older people. Hearing their stories of love, overcoming hardships, their successes, and family dynamics, can inspire you to avoid or embrace those aspects of life. They are truly an inspiration and are role models for our generation and our children’s generation to look up to and Ygal Sonenshine with Henry Walker aspire to,” Shapiro continued. This event honored “8 Over 80” exemplary Orange County philanthropists, who are role models for charitable giving and the spirit that makes such generosity possible. Heritage Pointe believes that this kind of life-long generous charitable giving not only benefits the Orange County community, but enriches and empowers the global community. The distinguished group of “8 Over 80” Honorees recognized at this year’s Gala included Leona Aronoff-Sadacca, Dr. Doris Chasin, Rose Lacher, Dr. Joe & Barbara Lebovitz, Marlene Mitnick, Dr. Herb Modelevsky, Blossom Siegel, and Polly Sloan. “8 OVER 80” lauds the creativity and significance of the over 80 generation, something our honorees demonstrate every day,” stated Beth Slavin, Director of Philanthropy for Heritage Pointe. “Each honoree vigorously supports worthy causes that continually enrich our community and inspire individuals. With 30 % of the U.S. population expected to reach 80 or older by 2030, “8 OVER 80” reflects the changing times in which we live. This event captures what Heritage Pointe is all about – celebrating the vitality of older adults, honoring their lives, and respecting their individuality. We asked the Orange County Jewish community to nominate these philanthropic individuals from our community, therefore, Heritage Pointe did not select these individuals. These honorees, who are in their ninth and tenth decades, continue to live lives of remarkable achievement, vitality, and civic engagement. During the Gala a very special and touching video was shown, produced by Josh Friedman, which gave all of the guests a snapshot into the lives of these extraordinary honorees. This event is certainly one that inspires us all to do the very best Honoree Dr. Herb Modelevsky Honoree Leona Aronoff-Sadacca we can do for our community,” Slavin continued. with wife Loretta Modelevsky. Scott Siegel, who was recognized last year along with his wife Leslie, as with husband Joe Sadacca. Heritage Pointe’s Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree, presented the “8 Over 80” distinguished Honorees with their special awards during the Gala. “This celebration represents all that the Orange County Jewish community should be proud of -- a rich heritage of giving, a heritage of caring for others – a heritage of repairing the world one mitzvah at a time,” stated Heritage Pointe CEO Mike Silverman. “These honorees have demonstrated decades of caring and commitment and we are all blessed to have them among us. Heritage Pointe is humbled, as well as, honored to have recognized these wonderful Honorees at our 28th Annual Gala,” Silverman continued. Brought back by popular demand, the evening’s entertainment was provided by the highly-acclaimed Bonnie Foster Productions, featuring its high-energy seven-piece band performing a variety of music for all guests to enjoy. Heritage Pointe is a nonprofit, residential community of 225 residents in Mission Viejo, California, providing independent, assisted-living, and memory care services for the elderly, while incorporating Jewish traditions and lifestyles. Heritage Pointe offers specialized social, cultural, religious, and educational activities for its residents. Contributions from this event will benefit the Heritage Fund, which provides assistance to residents who are in financial need. Heritage Pointe’s vision is simple, to foster an exceptional environment based on Jewish values where all community members, including seniors, their families, and volunteers can learn, grow, live well, and flourish. Michelangelo ’s Romantic Tuscan Villa!
Merriam Webster defines romance as “an emotional attraction or aura belonging to an especially heroic era, adventure or activity.” Though it was centuries later when Webster wrote it, the definition could easily have described this 11th-century farmhouse that Renaissance master Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni purchased in 1549. He was 72 when he bought it, just three years after completing the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. Having stayed in the Buonarroti family for over 300 years, it has been preserved and restored by its current owner and is for sale. The original deed held by Michelangelo, wherein he was described as a “dear sculptor and Florentine citizen,” will be passed on to the new owner. A true historic treasure, it is awash with details dating from the 11th century. Some of the most notable of Michelangelo’s works are the statues of David and Pieta and the ceiling frescoes in the Sistine Chapel in Rome, including the Last Judgment. The volume of material that has been preserved, marveled over, studied and argued about by art historians for the last six centuries has enabled future generations a glimpse into the life of of this genius, from whose skill so many artists have modeled their work. Though Michelangelo considered himself a Florentine, he lived most of his life in Rome and died there in 1564 at the age of 88. Il Divino, Michelangelo’s creativity ranged from sculpture to painting, poetry, engineering and architectural design, through the refinement of the High Renaissance and into the artistic age of Mannerism. He is considered by many to be the greatest artist of all time, a major influence for Western Art. Italy has always been associated with romance, from the dream of a passionate Italian lover, which Page 16
has been immortalized around the world, to the passion of the sellers in the weekly markets or the chef’s enthusiasm when he places the big plate of black squid pasta proudly in front of you at the table. Visitors catch the passion from the people and again visually throughout the countryside. The Tuscany region especially has enticed visitors to tour its Chianti vineyards, its Medieval fortressed hill towns with narrow winding streets and its lovely and romantic hot springs where one can immerse themselves in the warmth of the water at night with candles floating in the water. Rolling hills are ablaze with Cypresses, poppies, grass, sunflowers, and tiny village cafés beckon for a stolen afternoon tête-à-tête. Tuscany calls when the suited, straight-laced, nine to five work-a-day world has reached its max on one’s nerves and spirit and there’s no better place to recharge one’s life and rekindle one’s most important personal relationships… . .or start a new one. For those who feel the thrill of romance in their connection to history by simply touching a thousand-yearold wall, it’s almost inconceivable the connection from actually living and sleeping in the same rooms and walking the same grounds as this great man did over six centuries ago. The very thought of cooking in his kitchen next to the massive stone hearth where he cooked and warmed himself or to sleep in the same room where he lay visualizing the next step of a project before dozing off. Located on over six acres above the rolling hills, the 9,687 square feet of living space is contained in three multi-story buildings, including an ancient tower, believed to date back to the 11th century. The original architecture is accented throughout with large stone fireplaces, original

wood-beamed and barrel ceilings, one of which displays the original brick. Consisting of eight bedrooms and seven full baths with multiple fireplaces, all rooms pay homage to the period and modern conveniences blend into the background. The kitchen has all the rustic romance of the early centuries with high-end appliances that do not take away from the original architecture. Grounds are park-like with lawns and mature plantings with a lemon orchard, olive grove and Chianti vineyards, as well as the original olive oil mill which has been turned into a guest house.
The listing is held by Handsome Properties International. Live the romance of the 11th century in Renaissance master M i c h e l a n g e l o ’s o w n Tu s c a n farmhouse in the rolling hills and receive a copy of his original deed of ownership. Previously priced at $8.15 million in 2016, it has been reduced to $7.5 million, according to the broker’s website.
