How to Achieve that Wedding “WOW” Factor
By J.C. Meeker Entertainment that will knock the socks off your guests is one of the best ways to leave a lasting impression. A great band or DJ that keeps the guests dancing and enjoying themselves during the reception is key. Although the music is important it’s not the only entertainment that will keep your guests talking about how great your wedding was. Special events such as a funky dance performed by the bridal party, special acts brought in specifically to entertain your guests or a fireworks show can really bring the house down. Outstanding food and drinks is definitely a major way to give your wedding that WOW factor. The fact is people go to weddings not only to share in the beautiful union of two people in love but also to have a great time, good food and drinks. You do not have to have a 7-course meal in order to impress your guests. You can go small with just cocktails and hors d’oeuvres as long as you do it well. Fancy spreads like dessert bars and candy buffets are also a lot of fun. Signature drinks are very popular and you can never go wrong with an open bar. Midnight buffets are becoming increasingly popular and they don’t have to be an extravagant spread of food. Foods you would find on a midnight buffet are your typical bar type foods like chicken fingers,

Wedding Invitations: What’s the Difference Between Flat Printing, Thermography and Engraving? By Bellamy Vaught-Davis Wedding invitation costs for one hundred guests can vary widely-from just around one hundred dollars to several thousand. So, what’s the difference? Aren’t they all just paper and ink? Well, yes...and no. While the type of paper (or cotton, in some cases) can range in thickness, size and quality, there are only four options when it comes to how your invitations will be printed: letterpress, engraving, thermography and flat printing. Just as the quality of paper will affect your final invitation total, the way the invitations are actually printed can mean the difference between a three digit invite bill and a four digit one. Here are the differences in the main types of wedding invitation printing: Letterpress. This process is the oldest, most elegant and most expensive of the three--and for good reason. The wording for each set of invitations is arranged on a press, using the printer’s available fonts. This plate is then inked with the color(s) of ink you want, and the forced under high pressure against the blank invitation paper. The result is a beautiful invitation--you should be able to feel the indented wording after the process has been completed. You’ll need to order a very heavy paper to create this effect (read: more expensive); thinner papers may tear during the printing process. Engraving. The end result of this process creates an invitation with raised lettering, rather than indented
letter in letterpress. The creation process is similar, but even more individualized, as the invitation wording is carved on a metal plate rather than being composed with moveable type as in letterpress. You get to keep the plate at the end of the process, which makes for a neat, if unnecessary, wedding keepsake. The plate is heated behind the paper, forcing the lettering up. At the same time, ink is forced on top of the raised lettering, creating an elegant and distinctive look. This process also requires a heavy paper to withstand the heating and inking process. One benefit? There are far more options on fonts and spacing than with letterpress. T h e r m o g r a p h y. A r e y o u a champagne bride on a beer budget? Then, thermography may be the ticket for you. This process is highly computerized, which equates to a lower end cost. The wording of your invitation is placed into the
computerized printing system, and the press creates your wording on the paper with a type of very hot adhesive. The ink pigmentation is then forced down onto the adhesive and then quickly dried. The end result is a raised invitation that would fool all but the most seasoned of wedding invitation lovers. You can tell a thermography invite by the shininess of the ink and the lack of indentation on the back of the invite. Flat-printing. The most economical of the four, flat-printing creates an invitation that is completely smooth on the back and front. The process by which these invites are created are similar to that which occurs on your home computer: ink is laid down in lines or pixels by a printer and then dried. This process allows for the most customization of fonts, colors and spacing since the design is done exclusively on the computer. Happy invitation shopping!

From the pole to the checkered flag, reigning Monster Energy NASCAR Cup champion Martin Truex Jr. wins first Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway Photos by William Casper Staff Photographer Winning the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) last year naturally leads to Martin Truex Jr. (No. 78, Bass Pro Shops/5-Hour ENERGY Toyota) being held to a higher standard going forward. The NASCAR veteran lived up to those expectations Sunday as the polesitter led 125 of 200 laps and captured the checkered flag with little suspense at the 22nd-annual Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway. Auto Club Speedway hosted its 29th NASCAR Cup Series race – second all-time among active California racetracks – and crowned its 17th winning NASCAR Cup Series driver. Truex Jr. won his first Auto Club 400 in his 18th start at the twomile oval, and his 16th career MENCS race in 446 starts. Truex Jr., 37, became the first driver to win the pole position and all three stages in a MENCS race. Sunday’s Auto Club 400 accounted for Truex Jr.’s first MENCS victory and stage wins of the 2018 season. “Getting our first California win is unbelievable,” Truex Jr. said. “I feel like we’ve been close all year long. People kept asking me, ‘When are you going to win again, and when are you going to win any stages?’ Well, here you go. We had the offseason and you never know when you’re going to lose your mojo. It’s just kind of a reassurance that what we’re doing is working.” With the victory, Truex Jr. vaulted to the top of the MENCS points lead (216 points), nine points clear, and his team, Furniture Row Racing, also leads the MENCS owner standings by a nine-point margin. Putting an exclamation on Sunday’s performance, Truex Jr. led the final 31 laps and won the Auto Club 400 by a whopping 11.685 seconds. His first pole position at Auto Club Speedway was his 17th career pole. Despite never holding the lead, 2017 Auto Club 400 champion Kyle Larson (No. 42, DC Solar Chevrolet) improved his position late in the race and netted his second runner-up finish in the race (he was also second as a rookie in 2014). Though, the result snapped Larson’s four-race win streak on two-mile tracks. Larson started the race on the inside of Row 2. “I didn’t even see Martin,” Larson said. “All in all, it was a good day. It seemed like we could always get to third or fourth and we stalled out there. Having fun but we’d like to be one spot better.” Three-time Auto Club Speedway champ Kyle Busch (No. 18, Interstate Batteries Toyota) led for 62 laps before finishing third. Prior to Sunday, Truex recorded a personal-best finish of fourth on Fontana’s two-mile oval in the 2017 Auto Club 400. He was close to
winning last year as he was running second within the race’s last 10 laps and, after he chose not to pit during a late caution flag, he lost some position shortly after the restart. Truex’s first Auto Club Speedway win could be considered the completion of unfinished business. “I knew we had a really good race car,” Truex Jr. said. “We lost the lead a couple times on pit stops so that was something we had to fight through. I don’t think there was anybody better on the short or long runs, and that’s really hard to do here.” Added Truex Jr.’s crew chief, Cole Pearn: “We just had to get the back tightened up a little bit and once we Car #78 Martin Truex Jr. for the win did, the speed was there.” Striving to become the first driver to win four consecutive MENCS races since Jimmie Johnson in 2007, Bakersfield native Kevin Harvick (No. 4, Busch Beer Ford) was the subject of the primary pre-race plot surrounding the Auto Club 400. Starting in 10th position on the grid, Harvick’s bid to keep his win streak alive came to an early close. He was sent into the wall and skidded across the track after he got slightly loose coming out of Turn 2 on Lap 38 and side-drafted with Larson, prompting the race’s first caution flag. Larson and Harvick were running third and fourth, consecutively, for most of the race until that point. Larson re-started 20th out of the Kyle Busch making a quick pitstop caution. Meanwhile, Harvick needed fender repair and got back into the race in 36th position, two laps down and out of contention for the duration of the race. Harvick finished 35th and lost his MENCS points lead. “It’s my fault for coming down the race track and trying to side draft there,” Harvick said. Added Larson: “We were racing really hard. He had the better of me in Turns 1 and 2, and I had the better of him in Turns 3 and 4. I knew that I didn’t do anything wrong. I respect Kevin a lot and I think he respects me a lot, too. Just the little bit that I was around Kevin, I still feel that he had the best car, but who knows. He didn’t get to race a whole lot.” 2015 Auto Club 400 champion Truex reeling in the #1 spot for the win Brad Keselowski (No. 2, Wurth Ford) posted his fourth straight top-10 result at Auto Club Speedway with a fourthplace finish. Joey Logano (No. 22, Auto Club of Southern California Ford), who won Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series Roseanne 300 at Auto Club Speedway, placed fifth and led the race for nine laps. William Byron (No. 24, AXALTA Chevrolet) was the Auto Club 400’s highest-finishing MENCS rookie, placing 15th. The Auto Club 400 featured 16 lead changes among seven different leaders in the 37-car field, and five caution flags for a total of 21 laps. By Mike Klinger The Mission Viejo Saddleback Valley Elks brought back the 1950’s with their tribute to everyone’s favorite, Bob’s Big Boy. Big Boy was started as Bob’s Pantry in 1936 by Bob Wian in Glendale, California. The restaurants became known as “Bob’s, Home of the Big Boy Hamburger” and then Bob’s Big Boy. With 121 Bob’s Big Boy restaurants currently throughout the U.S. the Elks brought the flavor of Bob’s to the Lodge. Over 150 members and guests enjoyed Double-deck burgers, fries, salad with Boys Classic Blue Cheese dressing and of course chocolate or vanilla milkshakes. Guests dressedup in 1950’s garb and danced to the sounds of Jim “Hey Elvis” Mouth. Exalted Ruler, Mike Klinger, stated, “after five years of being absent, the Elks brought back a member favorite, the Big Boy, a fundraiser to support the lodge building account. Thank you to everyone that participated, dressed up in style and made our

Elks event a success”. The guests weren’t the only ones dressed up. All dining tables were adorned with Bob’s Big Boy figures sitting atop 33 record albums. In the Best Dressed Contest, Travis Eldred won for the men and Amy Keran, daughter of Lecturing Knight, Lane Keran, tied for the win with Garden Grove Elk Jane. Thank you to the Elks volunteers that helped with set-up and to our kitchen crew that made the 50’s return to the lodge. It is one of 10 lodges in the Orange Coast District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) whose headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. Traditional wedding rules have fallen by the wayside - food trucks are in, having a hashtag is a must, bridesmaids no longer wear the same dress and groomsmen are sometimes in sneakers. Couples are actively seeking ways to differentiate themselves and get creative. All that aside, there is one thing that remains constant - weddings must have wine.
Without wine, there is no glass to raise during the toast to the bride and groom and nothing to drink when the bar closes during dinner. Wine is the first thing guests are offered when they take a seat, and - you know that they say - it’s important to make a good first impression. Choosing the right varietals for your wedding does not have to be a
stressful endeavor. Whether you’re a novice wine drinker or a connoisseur, follow these four tips and you’ll please a crowd without spending a fortune: Say “cheers!” with a sparkling wine. People love a good toast, and nothing washes down a teary maid of honor speech like a glass of sparkling. Riondo Prosecco is an accessible
option that’s ideal to enjoy any day of the year, but perfectly suited for special occasions. You’ll get six pours out of a bottle, so plan accordingly! Good things come in threes. In addition to a sparkling, you’ll want a red and a white option that are familiar and food-friendly. You can’t go wrong with a Merlot - look for labels from the Napa region. Trying to find the perfect dress can feel like an uphill battle, but not when you go in with an open mind and a realistic budget to get the dress of your dreams. Here’s how to get the best wedding dress for your big day. The more people you take with you, the more opinions are going to be thrown your way when you’re trying on dresses. To get the dress YOU want, go into the bridal salon alone or with one very good friend who you know has your best interests in mind. Too often, a bride will find the perfect gown only to be swayed into disliking it because her mother, sister, fiance, or friend hated it. It’s your day. Get the dress you want and the more people you leave at home when shopping, the more likely you are to trust your own opinion and instincts. Don’t even bother trying on dresses that are out of your budget. Stick to dresses in your price range. If you don’t, your perfect dress can be one you can’t afford to buy, so every dress you try on thereafter won’t give you that wow factor. Only try on a dress if you know you can afford to buy it, no matter how much you are tempted to upgrade. Be open about styles. What looks terrible on a hanger may suit your body perfectly, and a style you are in love with

Indoors or outdoors? All these little details can help narrow down your choices and make gown selection easier. If you have just ONE gown in mind, start with that style. This way, you know straight off the bat if the mermaid design will work for you, and you can either go with it or venture elsewhere. Try off-white. If none of the classic white
gowns are working for you, it might be the color. Champagne and off-white gowns can make all the difference in style for many brides. You don’t have to go white on your wedding day just because it’s traditional. If you see a gown that you love but you think it won’t look good on you, if it’s in your budget, try it on. You don’t know what it will look like until you see it on your frame. Remember, even the right dress isn’t altered to you perfectly just yet. If a gown is just right but you’re afraid it won’t fit, keep in mind alterations will make it fit you like you were born in it. Don’t try on so many dresses that you
can’t remember a single one, or you become overwhelmed. If you are frustrated after trying on just one dress, stop. Being frustrated and shopping for “the dress” don’t go together. Try on as many as you are positive about, and if you get “the dress” on the first day, good for you. If not, there is always tomorrow. Lastly, remember it’s your day, so get the dress you want. It’s not your future husband’s dress, your best friend’s dress, your mom’s dress, or your sister’s dress. Don’t buy a dress because everyone else likes it. Get it because you love it. It’s your dress. Get the one that feels like it was made just for you.

Irvine Family Heir to Wed Former Ms. America In Historic Wedding! James M. Irvine and Susan R. Jeske have announced their engagement and will be married in the Spring of 2018 at the Irvine Ranch Historic Park. James Myford Irvine is the youngest grandson to the late James Irvine II who inherited about 115,000 acres in what is now Orange County, California and formed The Irvine Company and the James Irvine Foundation. He is the son of the late Myford and Gloria Irvine. Myford Irvine was the President of The Irvine Company for eleven years and the President of the James Irvine Foundation for 24 years beginning when it was established in 1937 until his death in 1959. In 2017 the James Irvine Foundation awarded over 90 million dollars to worthy charities in California. www.Irvine.org. Irvine spent 14 years (1978-1992) involved in Broadcast Network Television and was the Founder and President of Orange Coast Videos which was a successful network television movie facilities company for high end, high demand, live network television productions. His clients included, ABC, NBC, CBS Sports, Summer Olympics 1984, Boxing, Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Emmy Awards and the Rose Parade to name a few. He also was an active partner in a 41-acre winery in Napa Valley, California that produced over 30,000 cases of award winning wines. Because of his fascination with trains, he was an active partner in the Arizona and California Railroad. Currently, he is a business man and real estate investor. Jim has two children from a previous marriage. Susan R. Jeske is the daughter of the late Charles and Denise Jeske of Littleton, Colorado. She was crowned Ms. America 1997 at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas winning $75,000 in cash and prizes. In 1999, she purchased the Ms. America Pageant and became its CEO. Since then she has grown the pageant into an institution that attracts high-achieving women from all walks of life to vie for the title and put it to philanthropic use. The park is part of the OC Parks family of historic parks and is the original headquarters of the Irvine Ranch started by James Irvine II. The 16-acre property was donated by The Irvine Company to the County of Orange and made into a historic park for all to enjoy. In 2011 they met again and renewed their relationship as they were both single and still felt that spark between them. Then after dating for four years, James popped the question when he took Susan to the Balboa Bay Club to watch the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade. The evening was romantic as can be, with champagne, roses, candles, chocolate dipped strawberries and a beautiful sunset. As the parade got underway, fireworks lite up the sky, James got down on one knee to ask Susan to marry him. She broke out in tears of happiness and said yes! They are making their home in the beautiful “BellaTiara” in Orange County; socializing with their neighbors with several hosted parties. Decorating for the holidays is Susan’s specialty as she loves to make people happy when they see the lights and creations that adorn their home. After the wedding, they plan to take a combination vacation/honeymoon, destination unknown as they love to explore new places. Page 12

LARCS 2018 TEEN SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE EXTENDED TO FRIDAY, APRIL 27 The Ladera Ranch Community Services (LARCS) Board of Directors is proud to offer scholarship opportunities for teen residents of Ladera Ranch who will be attending a university or four year college in the fall of 2018. This scholarship is designed to recognize outstanding Ladera Ranch teens who have demonstrated a commitment to the Ladera Ranch community through volunteer participation as a LARCS Ranch Hand Volunteer and/or Teen Leadership Council (TLC) member, and who have been accepted into a four-year college or university. Scholarships will be offered to teens who meet the criteria below and are selected from the qualified applicant pool. 1. Current Ladera Ranch resident 2. Minimum of 15 volunteer hours over the previous year supporting LARCS and TLC projects and additional volunteer hours to support local organizations 3. Acceptance at a four-year college for the fall of 2018 4. 3.0+ GPA 5. Demonstrate good character via three letters of recommendation a. Academic b. Personal (non-family) c. Extracurricular (church, sports, music/band, scouts, etc.) 6. Agree to attend a LARCS board meeting and share how this scholarship will or has helped them personally.
Application Process: 1. Apply on LaderaLife.com starting January 22. The deadline to apply is 5:00 p.m. on April 27. 2. LARCS Scholarship Committee will review applications and select winners by May 25. 3. Candidates may be invited to meet with the Scholarship Committee as part of the selection process. 4. Scholarship recipients will be formally announced by July 1. Award Process
1. Student recipients will be contacted by June 1. Recipients must provide LARCS with the contact information for the bursar’s office of the school in which they will be attending no later than June 15. 2. LARCS will contact the bursar’s office to arrange for payment of the scholarship directly to the bursar for the student. 3. Shedding for the wedding: Your 3-month guide
The dress, the tux, the guests, the honeymoon - there are so many details that go into your wedding day. All eyes are on you from the moment you walk down the aisle until the last dance of the night. Understandably so, brides and grooms often feel a lot of pressure to look their best on this important day - there’s nothing like a wedding to motivate you to get serious about your health and fitness goals. But crash diets or extreme exercise programs are never the answer. “It’s usually best to start thinking about your specific goals three months before your wedding day to allow plenty of time to establish your routine and adjust to a healthier lifestyle,” says Steve Bronston, certified personal trainer with Life Time, a healthy way of life company that operates more than 115 health and wellness centers nationwide. “This creates a great opportunity for the bride and groom to support each other and get in shape together.” Bronston and Life Time offer a threemonth countdown plan to get you ready for the big day: Weeks 1-4 Focus on changing your unhealthy habits. Nutrition is key when trying to lose weight, decrease body fat and increase your overall health. Work with a professional to lay out a
detailed nutrition plan that consists of carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats at each meal. Then, begin with a fitness program that incorporates weight training and cardio intervals. Arm exercises like overhead press, tricep push-ups and bicep curls, and back exercises like rows and rear flys help brides looking to tone up for a strapless or low-back dress. Bronston suggests starting with two or three days of weight training, two or three days of cardio and one day of Pilates or yoga. Weeks 5-8 Now it’s time to switch up your
exercise routines. It’s a good idea to work with a personal trainer or join a group fitness class once or twice a week to shake up your routine and stay motivated. Your workouts should include one to two weight training exercises per body part throughout the week. If you can, try to shift the amount of weight you use and number of repetitions you do to help stimulate change within your body. Continue a cardio routine of two to three days per week and add in another day or Pilates or yoga. Weeks 9-12 It is important to keep up with your
developing healthy habits as the weeks progress, but as your wedding day approaches, you’re sure to feel the stress of planning. “A new focus on rest and relaxation during this time period is key,” Bronston says. You can eat well and exercise perfectly, but without sleep, stretching, rest and recovery, your body is at risk of not functioning properly. Planning a wedding can be stressful and tiresome, but if you commit to a healthy diet and fitness plan, you’ll walk down the aisle feeling confident and ready for your new life ahead. -(BPT)
