Migration of the Gray Whale, it is whale watching season Perhaps the most common whale seen in California is the California gray whale . This species is limited to the North Pacific and is unique in that almost the entire population follows a seasonal migration along the coastline of western North America. Most other whale species have separate populations in different oceans and/or hemispheres; each population has a separate migration with different months of the year and different routes. Almost all of the gray whales spend the summer months (June, July, and August) in the Bering Sea area between Alaska and Russia. A few even venture north into the Arctic Ocean. In the fall the majority of the population migrates south, along the west coast of Canada and the United States, ending up in the quiet lagoons of Baja California during the winter months (January, February, and March). In the spring the population returns to the Bering Sea area. This 12,000 mile roundtrip may be the longest migration of any mammal on Earth. Small ‘resident’ populations of gray whales are showing up in the northwestern United States. These whales generally make the

southward migration but drop off on the northward migration to spend the summer in shallow coastal areas. Filter feeding on bottom zooplankton during the summer months is the primary activity of the gray whale. Filter feeding whales use baleen to strain their prey from the water. The group of whales that filter feed (like the gray whale), using baleen, is called the mysticeti and they rely almost entirely on small fish and zooplankton as their food source. Other whales, like the killer whale, sperm whale, dolphins, and porpoises have teeth for catching larger animal prey. These toothed whales are called the odontoceti and lack baleen. The baleen of the Gray Whale is light in color, coarse and short. It lines the entire upper jaw. Their lower jaw is just gums. During feeding a large amount of water (with zooplankton) is taken into the mouth, the mouth closed a little so that the baleen is just touching the bottom gums, then the tongue is used to squeeze the water out through the baleen. The baleen plates (stacked closely together and frayed on the inside) act like a sieve, letting the water through but retaining the zooplankton. The zooplankton is then licked off the baleen by the

tongue and swallowed. At full size the gray whale is about 35 to 50 feet in length and weighs 20-40 tons. It needs 65 tons of food annually to be healthy and migrate. The small zooplanktonic crustaceans that make up the majority of the gray whale’s diet are called amphipods but the gray whale has been known to consume other crustaceans like shrimp, mysids, and krill. The months of summer feeding in the Arctic allow the gray whale to add to its thick blubber layers. The thick layer of blubber under the skin of a whale is not only an insulation from the cold water but also a storage

area for food needed during the long migrations. If a whale does not get enough to eat it begins to use up its blubber reserves and starving whales can be recognized by their back showing their vertebrae as well defined bumps. A healthy gray whale will naturally have only a slightly bumpy back (with their much reduced dorsal fin showing as a small bump). Sometimes a nursing mother gray whale will have a bumpy back (but this is understandable since she is expending a lot of calories producing milk for her nursing baby).

3 e x pert tips for starting a successful vegetable garden Warm weather begs green thumbs across the country to break out their gardening gloves and till the soil for the season’s plantings. Whether this is your first year tending a home garden or it’s something you’ve been doing for decades, gardening offers many rewards, including time spent outdoors, the ability to feel closer to Mother Nature, and of course, the fresh fare plucked just steps from your kitchen. Anyone can have a successful home garden no matter where they live by following a few steps from professional gardeners. Consider these three important tips for starting your garden right so you can enjoy fresh produce faster, thanks to the experts at Outdoor Essentials makers of garden beds, compost bins and other gardening necessities. Step 1: Research appropriate early plantings Springtime is ideal garden time thanks to milder weather, and a good place to start is by researching proper plants for your region’s early season. If you have questions, consult your local nursery or call your local extension office for specialized advice. In general, good early plantings include brassicas, a family of plants that includes kale, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and cabbages. Additional cool-season crops to consider include radishes, beets, peas, potatoes and carrots. These plants will thrive early in the season and produce yields quickly. In addition to quick-producing plants, the early season is the best time to plant other varieties that take a long time to mature. Onions, for example, require a lengthy growing season and should be planted early so that in late summer, gardeners can enjoy the maximum yield possible. Want produce quicker? Consider

purchasing starter plants, also called plant starts, rather than relying on packets of seeds. These are the small plants that have already germinated and have a basic root system. These are easy to transfer to your own garden and, with proper tending, will grow quickly and produce fruit faster. Step 2: Prepare garden spaces for accelerated growth After months of not being used, your garden’s soil is likely compact and will require some tilling to loosen the dirt and encourage plant growth. You can do this with a garden rake; for large gardens, some people prefer to rent a power tiller. People who live in smaller homes, a townhouse or condo might prefer to use raised garden beds. Stylish and functional, raised garden planters from Outdoor Essentials eliminate the need to bend over to tend garden, a benefit that has made them vastly popular. Raised garden beds can be used virtually anywhere outdoors, including on a deck or patio, and they can be moved, too, if necessary. Whether you create a garden plot in your yard or add a few raisedgarden planters to your patio, make sure the dirt is nutrient-rich and ready for your plants. Typically it’s wise to mix black dirt in with your soil to ensure that plants grow strong. If you’ve had trouble growing in the past, consider getting your soil tested to verify pH levels.

Step 3: Tend daily and enjoy the fruits of your labor For best results, tend your garden on a daily basis. Check for soil moisture and water as necessary. Make sure to pluck weeds and watch for pest infestations. If done daily, it should only take a few minutes to verify the health of your garden, plus it’s fun to watch plants grow and flower. As fruit and vegetables mature, it’s time to enjoy the season’s first harvest. The healthy fresh fare tastes even better knowing you grew it yourself, plus it cuts down on grocery bills. If you find you have too much of one type of produce at once, share with neighbors, coworkers and friends - everyone loves fresh garden delights. Keep in mind that as plants grow, you need to make sure they don’t overcrowd each other. This can limit growth and yield production. If your garden starts to look overgrown, you may need to pluck out a few plants to open up space and encourage proper growth and healthy root systems. Spring to it! The mild, moist weather and longer days of the early gardening season make the conditions ideal for plant growth. With a few simple steps and a watchful eye, you’ll be enjoying fresh produce at almost every meal.

THE MOVERS & SHAKERS OF LADERA RANCH: SPOTLIGHT ON LADERA RANCH CIVIC COUNCIL MEMBER JETT MCCORMICK Part of a continuing series by Ladera Ranch News on prominent members of the community of Ladera Ranch

LADERA RANCH CIVIC COUNCIL MEMBER JETT MCCORMICK By: Amy R. Spurgeon-Hoffman, Reporter Ladera Ranch News “We moved to Ladera for the promise of a close-knit community,” McCormick told the Ladera Ranch News. “Originally it was just an idea, but we realized to make it a reality we needed to get involved and work at it.” McCormick has done just that in Ladera Ranch since buying his family home on a dirt lot in 1999.McCormick brews his own beer, likes his coffee black, medium roast, says deciding on pizza from Z-pizza or Project Pie is mood dependent, and chooses FM, classic rock and country over AM talk radio. McCormick spent his teenage years in Virginia. As a child, he spent a lot of time in the outdoors and backpacked the 2,200-mile-long Appalachian Trail a number of times. But settled in California permanently following a stellar academic career studying civil engineering and architecture from USC. With notable ancestors including his grandfather [Admiral Lynde Dupuy McCormick] who was the first Supreme Allied Commander of all NATO in The Atlantic, and Cyrus McCormick who invented the farm reaper following McCormick’s graduation from USC, he began his career in engineering/ architecture for general contractors and real estate developers. FOUNDING LADERA FAMILY, FOUNDER OF LADERA’S CIVIC VOICE McCormick and his equally civic-minded wife Carol, have been married 31 years and have three great children, Lindsay, 28, Jett, 26 and Kevin, 20. Lindsay and Jett graduated from Tesoro High School and Kevin from San Juan Hills High School. The family dog Stella Carol McCormick has served as President of the LARCS Board, was a founding member of the Ladera Ranch Little League Board, and original PTA President for Chaparral Elementary School, a California Distinguished School. McCormick has been an instrumental leader in several founding civic entities in Ladera He is one of the founding members of the Ladera Ranch Civic Council in 2008. He’s served as Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary and currently serves as Chair of the Governance Committee. He’s been elected to the Ladera Ranch Civic Council every two years consecutively since 2008. “The Ladera Ranch Civic Council was formed to

give Ladera Ranch residents a voice in the direction of their community,” McCormick said. “Since we are not a city, we originally did not have a central voice to address civic issues. The Civic Council address issues of governance, public safety, transportation, land use, public works, and other areas that would be handled by a City council if Ladera Ranch were an actual City.” “The LRCC plays an important role in the community to address directly issues with County services, the school district, LAFCO, Sheriffs, and more. Over the years the LRCC has had a hand in the completion of the pool/track/football stadium at San Juan Hills High School, transportation issues including traffic mitigation around OSO Grande Elementary, governance studies with LAFCO, stops signs adjacent to the Goddard school, new crosswalks, speed limit issues, and more,” McCormick said. A COMMUNITY TAKES SHAPE In addition to his role with the Ladera Ranch Civic Council, McCormick helped shape Ladera Ranch Community Services (LARCS) role in Ladera by serving on its board. he’s currently in his fourth year, and working with others to bring about its key committees such as Teen Leadership Council, Ranch Hands Volunteer Committee and Event Planning Committees. LARCS also offers the Technology Advisory Committee. LARCS is an independent non-profit public benefit corporation lead by a five member Board of Directors. McCormick co-founded and volunteers with the Ladera Ranch Wine Club with his wife Carol, has served on the Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corporation Board (LARMAC), Ladera’s HOA; and has served as a neighborhood representative in Oak Knoll for nearly a decade. McCormick coaches for Little League baseball, soccer, and Pop Warner football, where his teams went to the National Championship game twice in Florida.McCormick founded Cub Scout Pack 689 and served as its Cubmaster for three years. COUNTY GOVERNMENT APPOINTMENT In June 2014, then Orange County 5th District Supervisor Pat Bates (now Senator Bates for California’s 36th Senate District), appointed McCormick to the Orange County Planning Commission and he currently serves as its Vice Chairman. The Orange County Board of Supervisors appoints five planning commissioners, each representing a district. THE FUTURE OF LADERA McCormick said his favorite project with Ladera Ranch Civic Council has been the recent governance study with the Orange County Local Agency Formation Commission, or OC LAFCO, concerning future governance options for Ladera Ranch and someday Cityhood, “which is a long term goal.” OC LAFCO is a government agency that makes decisions regarding boundaries for cities, unincorporated territory (land not located within a city) and special districts . Another favorite Ladera Ranch Civic Council project was the completion of the football stadium at San Juan Hills High School which is the last piece to completing all new construction at this comprehensive high school campus. The stadium will consist of an artificial turf football/ soccer field surrounded by a synthetic surface 400 meter running track. The track and field will have full lighting and a state-of-the-art audio system. Outside of the track, home bleachers will be provided to seat almost 2,000 spectators,

and visitor’s bleachers will accommodate over 600 spectators. 2,600 square feet of permanent buildings will house restrooms, ticketing and concessions. The total construction cost for the entire stadium is approximately $7 million, McCormick went on record about the topic of Lader’s future as a City. “Cityhood is a long time process that is a very complicated process. However, the basic issues comes down to finances,” McCormick said. “The current status of State laws and funding sources are not right to move forward with Cityhood at this time. Also, we need an economic base. Ladera Ranch, on its own, does not have the tax base to form a city without a tax increase to the residents. Sales tax becomes a significant funding source for any city.” “Ladera does not have an adequate commercial basis to support an incorporated City” McCormick told the Ladera Ranch News The future of governance in our area might include Ladera, Rancho Mission Viejo, Los Flores, Wagon Wheel and other areas. This year, the Council looks to publish a policy document to provide our idea of our future somewhat like a road map.” As for the topic of some cities like Rancho Santa Margarita “bailing out “of the Orange County Fire Authority to create their own Fire Departments, McCormick said “At some point in the future, when Ladera looks to incorporation, those discussions will occur to determine if these types of services will be contracted or formed within the incorporated City.” McCormick discussed the new issue of Sober Living Homes in Ladera Ranch. “I understand the many frustrations surrounding this issue. Unfortunately, there are no easy answers as we saw at the April 11 Town Hall Meeting,” McCormick told the Ladera Ranch News “We do need to keep in mind these are not felons or other major offenders,” McCormick said. “The issue of us not being a City does add challenges, but I know that Chairwoman Bartlett and Senator Bates with their staffs are committed to supporting us. What we can do is work together as a community to provide insight and our feedback to them.” “The Civic Council has taken action to form a Committee to find out the facts, determine our options and work with our government officials to determine the best way forward. The group is to be made up of representatives from the Civic Council, LARMAC, Neighborhood Watch, and other residents to work together on this issue,” McCormick said. “I do applaud Chris Vellandi and the LARMAC Board for taking quick steps to assess the issue putting together the Town Hall meeting “I look forward with working with other community members to determine the best course going forward,” McCormick said. With all that he has on his plate, McCormick does find time to add hobby time into his schedule. He’s getting back into backpacking after many years and is looking for fellow Ladera Ranch residents in the area who would like to get involved. McCormick, whose favorite Ladera pastime is the 4th of July, prefers not to be in the public eye, and enjoys working behind the scenes. “I have no agenda when it comes to community involvement -- except doing what is right for the community,” McCormick said. Greatest life lesson? “Be humble”. Favorite quote? “Do unto others as you would them do unto you”.

Lane Clarke and Balu U Bring Home the Blue in the $40,000 Spring Classic III Grand Prix, presented by The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel Susan Hutchison and SIG Firecracker Light Up the Interactive Mortgage Futurity Photos by McCool It looked like Karl Cook was going to make it two wins in two days until the final go of the ten horse jump-off. Speed demon Lane Clarke riding Georgy Maskrey-Segesman’s Balu U stole the top spot by two seconds for the win in the $40,000 Spring Classic III Grand Prix, presented by The RitzCarlton, Laguna Niguel. FEI Course Designer Peter Holmes of Canada set the 1.50m track for the twenty-eight competitors. Initially it was a ladies’ game as the first six to go clean were all female. Ultimately, seven women and three men jumped without fault, making it ten total for the jump-off. Kristin Hardin led the way on Nicole Teague’s Firestone, setting the tone with a clean round in 41.86, and taking an efficient route but leaving room to sneak in. A bit of tough luck plagued the next four females - Michelle Parker, Nathalie Cooper, Lindsey Archer, and Nicole Haunert - as they all raced to catch Hardin’s blazing time but fell short, coming home with rails. Canadian Brenda Ridell and Silverstar Farms, Ltd.’s Wilson took the conservative route, leaving the rails up but not catching the leader. Austria’s Peter Petschenig rode Uppercut Chavannaise (Pam Bilek, owner) double clean, coming in just behind Hardin in 42.79. After winning the previous class on SIG Firecracker, Susan Hutchison tried to make it two blues and flew around the shortened course on Ziedento (owned by St. Bride’s Farm). They had the time, 39.48, but had a heartbreaking late rail for four faults. With Hardin still in the lead, two male riders, both veterans of a fast track,

Lane Clarke with his team, owner Georgy Maskrey-Segesman and representatives from The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel, EquiFit, inc. and Blenheim EquiSports. galloped in to try to claim the top spot. Karl Cook and Signe Ostby’s Caillou 24 did just as they should, double clean in 41.79, beating Hardin by a hair. The crowd anxiously awaited as Lane Clarke entered the ring on his new ride, Balu U. Clarke started off slow, but had faith in the horse’s gigantic stride, leaving out strides in both lines to steal the blue from Cook with a time of 39.78. Of the 19-hand, German-bred gelding, Clarke said, “I know he has a huge stride. And that he is equally as good off a really big stride as he is off a medium stride. I knew there were

Susan Hutchison and SIG Firecraker

fast times, and a couple leave outs that I could do that others couldn’t because of the size of my horse. I took the chance, I got a little long to a few and trusted his scope and he did it no problem.” Clarke fits the tall and talented Balu U well. “I’ve only ridden him for three weeks now. He has a big heart and is as brave as a lion. He makes you believe you can take any risk and I took a few, and it all worked out.” Susan Hutchison and SIG Firecracker Light Up the Interactive Mortgage Futurity The first $7,500 Interactive Mortgage Horses 10 & Under Futurity of this season’s series kicked off this afternoon with a win for Susan Hutchison and SIG Firecracker. After the first three horse and rider pairs that galloped in had clean rounds, the rails and time faults began to add up for several entries. Ultimately, three more of the seventeen entries rode fault-free in the first round, for a total of six to return for the jump-off. Hutchinson qualified two mounts, and was first up on Veronica Tracy’s Daify. They set the bar with a quick clean time of 40.05. Everardo Hegewisch aboard his own entry Ircos had fence 3 down for a score of four faults. Similarly, Amy Hess and Topaze Blue (owned by Blue Tree Farms, LLC) scored four, but stopped the clock several seconds faster than Hegewisch. It was Julia

Nagler aboard her own Birhan who laid down a fault free and fast ride in 39.85 to take over the lead. Taylor Harris and Cassey 5 followed Nagler, and ended with eight faults. Last to go, Hutchison knew exactly what she and SIG Firecracker had to do to for the blue. Stopping the clock in at 37.01, they sealed the deal. Five more qualifiers remain before the $20,000 Interactive Mortgage Futurity Series Final at Showpark All Seasons, August 31 - September 4, 2016. The top 25 point earners will be invited to compete. The excitement of Blenheim Spring Classic III didn’t end at the jumper ring. More than twenty special High Score and Grand Champion awards were presented to hunters in ten divisions during WCHR Week. Congratulations to all! The highlights of the final week of the Blenheim Spring Series begin on Thursday, April 14th, with a Markel Insurance 1.40m Grand Prix Qualifier and an Interactive Mortgage U25 Series Qualifier running consecutively. On Friday morning, Blenheim will host a USHJA International Hunter Derby, featuring numerous special awards. On Saturday, April 16th, Davidson Communities presents the $50,000 Spring Classic IV Grand Prix. And the second Interactive Mortgage Horses 10 & Under Futurity class will be held on Sunday.

Laderas Dylan Farrell joins men’s developmental national team Orange County Water Polo Club Olympic Pipeline Continues to Grow

By Pete Farrell The USA water polo National tryouts were held over the weekend. For one Ladera Ranch resident this was his second attempt to make the coveted team. Dylan Farrell who attends Ladera Ranch Middle School is a 6 ft. 1 inch left hander who has been playing water polo for the last 6 years. He is currently working with two former Olympians, Coach Jeremy Laster (Orange County Water Polo Club) and Coach Chris Segesman (Regency Water Polo Club). For this Olympic hopeful this endeavor started over 2 years ago. It began by being one of the 28 local club players to be chosen to play in the National Championships held in Riverside California. This consisted of 225 of the best players from across the United States. The most promising 70 athletes were asked to attend the National Training Selection Camp and they will all be vying for the chance to be picked for the US Men’s Developmental National Team. The weekend is long, the water is cold, but by midday the scorching sun takes it’s toll. It starts Friday night and doesn’t end until Monday morning. He will swim 225 yards for speed and 2000 yards for endurance. He will stretch, pass, shoot, defend, and get into an occasional melee. As he swims, he remembers how hard he worked last year and he did not hear

his name at the end. This year will be different he tells himself. “I will swim faster, play harder, drive more, shoot better, and try as hard as I can to impress this Olympic coaching staff”. It’s Monday morning and he hasn’t seen his parents, dog or friends for 4 days. The training is sequestered to athletes only. He mumbles during the 2 ½ hours’ morning scrimmages, “I can barely feel my legs, but the coaches are still watching, push, push, and push. “ What’s so big about making this team, push, push push”. “I have to fight the exhaustion, push, push, push “. The coaches’ whistle blows and now it’s finally over, “man I really hope I make this team”, says the voice in his head. All 70 players are asked to sit in the bleachers for the selection announcement. Only 20 players are going to make it this year. It suddenly gets very quiet. The names are being called in no particular order; many of the names are familiar, and then it comes Dylan Farrell (Orange County Water Polo Club). The long hours and hard work paid off. It took 2 years, but he did it. He is now what they call ‘in the U.S.A Olympic pipeline’. This means if he continues to grow, work hard, gets bigger, stronger, smarter, and faster he has a chance to represent the US in a future Olympics. He suddenly realizes the real work has just begun!

CIVIC LEADERS PROPOSE CALM RESPONSE TO OPPONENTS OF SOBER LIVING HOUSING IN LADERA California 36th District Senator Pat Bates, Orange County 5th District Supervisor Lisa Bartlett & Other Community Leaders All Attended Ladera Ranch’s Emergency Town Hall Meeting Monday April 11

California 36th District Senator Pat Bates By: Amy R. Spurgeon-Hoffman, Staff Reporter Ladera Ranch News An overflow crowd of concerned Ladera Ranch and south county residents attended Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corporation’s emergency town hall meeting Monday April 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Ladera Ranch Middle School to listen as California Senator Pat Bates 36th District, Orange County 5th District Supervisor Lisa Bartlett, Collie F. James, IV, the HOA’s attorney, and others lead a three-hour plus discussion on the topic of Sober Living Homes operating in the community. The information packed meeting was in response to Ladera residents’ growing concern over the existence of a Sober Living Home in Covenant Hills, and a second one apparently slated to begin operations here soon. The bulk of the meeting was to inform residents of airtight federal, state and local legal protections afforded to recovering addicts living in Sober Living Homes in California, legal rights of Ladera citizens, the HOA and streamlined processes concerned residents are to take should they have a reportable concerns associated with a Sober Living Home, such as safety concerns. Sober Living Homes are not subject to permits and receive no state oversight because of federal

11. She was joined by other influential government representatives, including Supervisor Bartlett, and the OC Sheriff’s Department. Senator Bates addressed the audience and cited directly from a ‘Sober Living Homes March 2016 Update’ she coauthored in the California Legislature with Assemblyman William P. Brough District 73, who was unable to attend. “There are real concerns about the presence and proliferation of sober living homes in our communities that lack sufficient oversight and regulation,” the SLH March 2016 update reads. “Beginning last year, we have engaged in conversations, including a roundtable, with city attorneys, city managers, members of Congress, county supervisors, city council members and others, to consider the issues related to sober living homes. We recently participated in an event that was hosted by the League of California Cities in Irvine, in which current legal and regulatory issues concerning sober living homes were presented. That event was attended by over 130 people, including federal, state and local officials. We are under no illusions that there is an immediate fix. A key issue remains that people who are recovering from alcoholism or drug addiction are afforded legal privileges by being classified as “disabled” under federal law.” “We have both introduced bills that create accountability and oversight for sober living homes. We are also co-authoring bills that other members of the Legislature have introduced. The following are summaries of the bills that we and other members of Legislature have introduced.” Last year, Assemblyman Brough authored Assembly Bill 838, which would require a recovery house that is owned or operated by a community care facility and that functions as an integral component of that community Ladera Ranch residents and local government officials, attended a 3-hour-plus emergency town hall meeting April 11 in Ladera Ranch to care facility to be licensed and subject discuss issues surrounding the arrival of sober living homes in Ladera. to inspection and enforcement.” and California laws. Ladera Ranch Community Activist Generates Interest A Chang.org petition was reportedly generated by concerned Ladera Ranch resident Cesar Meyer, also in attendance, https://www.change. org/p/michael-castanon-do-youwant-a-drug-and-alcohol-treatmentfacility-in-ladera-ranch-take-actionnow, which has supposedly garnered 896 supporters and is shy of 104 signatures to reach its 1,000-person goal. Meyer’s petition is apparently directed at the owner and operator of the Covenant Hills Sober Living Home; LARMAC Executive Director Ken Gibson, 49th District Congressman Darrell Issa, 5th District OC Supervisor Bartlett and State Senator Bates. Ladera Ranch residents are some of Orange County’s most family oriented, civic minded, well- informed and educated citizens; so what to do about a million dollar plus mansion of recovering legally protected drug and alcohol addicts, without appearing… unwelcoming? Legislators Say No Immediate Fix for Regulation of Sober Living Homes California Senator Bates took a leave from Sacramento to attend the pivotal gathering of her constituents on April

“This year, Senator Bates has authored, with Assemblyman Brough as co-author, Senate Bill 1283. This bill authorizes a city or county to adopt health and safety standards for structured sober living homes. City and county ordinances could include, but would not be limited to, mandatory registration requirements, in-home supervision requirements for the residents, and an operation plan that addresses maintenance of the property and noise abatement.” “Some cities have adopted ordinances for sober living homes, but lengthy and expensive litigation has left uncertainty. The experiences of these cities may discourage other from adopting adequate and appropriate ordinances”. “The clarity that this measure provides is intended to facilitate the adoption of appropriate and adequate local health and safety standards for structured sober living homes. “Three other bills have been introduced this year to address sober living homes: Cities and Communities Must Proceed Cautiously Before Enacting New Regulations In July 2015, The City of Newport Beach announced it ended a sevenyear legal battle over sober-living homes with a settlement agreement. Newport Beach settled lawsuits with Pacific Shores Properties, Newport Coast Recovery and Yellowstone Women’s First Step House, for a total of $5.25 million, according to Newport Beach City Attorney Aaron Harp. The city reportedly spent at least $4 million litigating the cases. Ladera Ranch Residents Advised to Move Forward, Stay Informed While LARMAC has hired Attorney Collie F. James, IV, to help the HOA navigates a host of lingering questions, the reported Sober Living Homes operator Castanon did not return calls for comment by the Ladera Ranch News. Residents were urged to follow the policies and procedures of the HOA in reporting any nuisance issues arising from the SLH in Covenant Hills, or elsewhere. While the HOA says it is reviewing any new rules that can be implemented to address those residents’ unfavorable views of the Sober Living Homes here, residents are advised to go online to www. LaderaLife.com and learn how to file a written complaint about the Sober Living Homes if one arises, join the private Ladera Ranch Neighborhood Watch Group, and read continuing coverage in the Ladera Ranch News to stay informed on this developing story facing all of Ladera.

United Cerebral Palsy Gala Raises $486,000 and Honors David Horowitz and Dana Dowers Photos by: Jon Didier Photography United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County’s popular black tie gala held at the Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach where over 300 guests enjoyed the elegant fundraiser. The stylish event raised $486,000 in proceeds and honored David Horowitz of the Horowitz Group and Dana Dowers for their extensive support of the nonprofit’s programs and services serving nearly 4,000 children and families affected by cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy, Down syndrome and developmental delays. Guests were met along the red carpet by United Cerebral Palsy of OC’s child ambassadors and their families. A lively cocktail hour and expansive poolside silent auction followed, and once inside the elegant ballroom, attendees enjoyed live music, auction, gourmet dinner, family speakers, awards program and moving videos featuring United Cerebral Palsy of OC families and honorees. Board chair James Corbett and event chairs Kim Letch and Michele Maryott welcomed guests and acknowledged the evening’s major sponsors including The Allergan Foundation, Argyros Family Foundation, D.L.D. Insurance Brokers, Inc. and the Horowitz Group. Supporter Mike Tenerelli was honored for his extensive commitment to the organization including three separate board terms. Honorary committee members David Ball, Ray Chao, Bob Cluck, Chris Dubia, Douglas Ingram, Dennis Kuhl, Jon Muller and David Pyott were also recognized. Magician Johnny Ace Palmer entertained both child ambassadors and adults prior to dinner, immediately followed by live auction and paddle raise led by emcee and auctioneer Jim Nye. Generous donors helped raise $128,100 during the fund-a-need challenge and the top live auction item was dinner for eight with Rod Carew, Chuck Finley and Dennis Kuhl at the Irvine Cove residence of Dana Dowers which raised $7500. A “Shopaholic Dream” package at South Coast Plaza and Bloomingdales for six generated $4800 and a three bedroom villa at Pelican Hill Resort went for $4600. The awards ceremony was held just after dinner when Chris Dubia recognized the Horowitz Group with the Corporate Impact Award. Since 1994, Horowitz Group chairman David Horowitz has provided extensive financial support and leadership including the sponsorship and committee involvement of several United Cerebral Palsy of OC fundraisers. His Laguna Niguel-based company got its start in 1990 investing in ready-mix concrete but expanded to real estate and private business investments. Angel’s Baseball Chairman Dennis Kuhl introduced his longtime friend Dana Dowers as he was honored with the Legacy Award for his twenty-plus year support of United Cerebral Palsy of OC. Dowers is a member of the board of directors and one of the original founders of the organization’s annual Golf Classic. He is president and CEO of Irvine-based, D.L.D. Insurance Brokers, Inc., a privately owned firm specializing in technical insurance. The event concluded with dancing to the live music of The California Band. For more than 60 years, United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County (UCPOC) has helped children with a wide range of disabilities to lead a Life Without Limits and achieve their full potential and inclusion into society at all levels. UCP-OC provides vital services that support nearly 4000 children and families each year to improve individual well-being from birth through early adulthood. 5 better-for-you ways to host your next spring gathering

As the weather warms up and you’re beginning to think about sunny brunches and breezy dinners on the patio, it may be time to take a fresh approach to your spring entertaining. From Easter and Mother’s Day to a number of other spring holidays, who wouldn’t want to step up their hosting game? During a season of celebration, temptations can preoccupy you, but that doesn’t mean you have to give in. These tips will help you plan a spring gathering to impress your guests while treating them to better-for-you choices. 1. Choose dishes that can be prepared ahead of time. While you may be looking to wow your family and friends with your impressive entertaining abilities, you also want to catch up and spend time with them. After all, isn’t that the point of hosting a gathering? Find a main course that can be prepped before your gathering so you’ll have more time to laugh and talk with your guests. Make a plan so everything will be ready for your guests to enjoy at the same time. 2. Reach for home-style-tasting and simple ingredients. Take pride in each ingredient you use while preparing to entertain. Read labels and be conscious of what you are putting on your table. A brand such as Naturally Fresh(R) offers delicious, home-style-tasting salad

dressings and dips with no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. 3. Make better-for-you substitutions. Sticking with a better-for-you theme doesn’t mean you have to skip dessert. You can find plenty of dessert recipes that substitute ingredients to increase nutrition and lower fat and calorie content. For example, you can substitute applesauce for oil and butter, or coco nibs for chocolate chips. Get creative and your guests will marvel at your fresh approach to cooking and baking. 4. Opt for fresh foods when possible. Include various types of fresh fruits and vegetables in your appetizers, main course and side dishes. Fresh foods contain wonderful vitamins and minerals, so why not share some of the benefits with your friends? A veggie tray with Naturally Fresh(R) Classic Ranch Brand Dressing is a classically refreshing hors d’oeuvre to serve at any spring gathering while beautifully displayed watermelon makes a sweet and guilt-free dessert. 5. Create shared platters. To avoid loading your guests’ plates with huge portions, create platters that everyone can share. While you’re setting up, be mindful of the number of people you’re hosting compared to the amount of food you prepare. Serve the meal family style and encourage everyone to try a little bit of everything.

Bring a better-for-you mindset to your spring gatherings when you follow these tips.
