The secret to Mother’s Day gifting success: Give time, not stuff

She nursed you through countless cases of childhood sniffles, taught you to tie your shoes and make a mean omelet, and she’s still your go-to source for good advice and your favorite homebaked cookies. Are you really going to just give Mom a pair of socks and some flowers for Mother’s Day? You can do better than that. In the tradition of a current pop-culture meme, here’s a “give this, not that” list of Mother’s Day ideas: Give: Your time. Last year, 44 percent of mothers surveyed by online deal site PriceGrabber said they wanted quality time with their family for Mother’s Day. Whether your family includes adult children who live and work far from their childhood home (and Mom) or a busy family with young children, it can be hard to find time to spend with each other on a regular basis. On Mother’s Day, make a point of devoting the day to Mom. Whatever you choose to do together - dine out, visit a botanical garden or just hang out at home - you’ll be giving her the gift she wants most: time with you. Don’t give: Stuff. There’s a difference between a thoughtful gift that has meaning to the recipient, and something clearly bought out of desperation just so the giver has something to hand over on Mother’s Day. Moms know the difference. Things like cowboy boots, sunglasses and even designer purses were among the items mothers said they didn’t want in a survey by Ebates. Don’t wait until the last minute to buy something she may not want. Put some thought into the gift a week or two before the big day so you can be sure you’re giving her something she really wants, like a piece of unique jewelry, her favorite bath products, or an attractive scarf.

Give: A great meal out. It’s easy to understand why dining out was on the list of most-wanted gifts for mothers in every geographic area surveyed by Ebates. What could make Mom happier than enjoying a great meal with her family? Not having to cook it herself or clean up afterward! Taking Mom out for meal is a time-honored Mother’s Day tradition and restaurants can be busy on the first Sunday of May. In fact, Chris Ciavarra, senior vice president of marketing for Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, reports that Mother’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year for their restaurant locations across the country. Family-style restaurants like Cracker Barrel are a good choice for Mother’s Day because there’s something on the menu for everyone. Don’t give: Practical kitchen items. No matter how much Mom says she wants a new electric can opener or how much she needs a new set of pots and pans, don’t give these items on Mother’s Day. Moms are more than just the sum of the time they spend in the kitchen. If she really needs and wants those things, why not give them to her at some other time of year, for no other reason than she’s a great mother? Or, if you must give something kitchen-related for Mother’s Day, consider something that’s pretty and fun, too, like decorative serve ware. Buy from a store that offers free gift wrapping services - like Cracker Barrel and it’s even easier to give a good-looking gift. Give: Gift cards. A gift card to her favorite store was another popular selection of moms surveyed by Ebates. But don’t think giving her a gift card is all you have to do. Research to find just the right card for her, and then offer to accompany her on a shopping excursion to her favorite store. That way, you’ll be giving her two things she wants most - a gift card and time spent with you. Don’t give: Technology. Do you really want to give Mom a smartphone that will be obsolete by next Mother’s Day? Or a tablet so complicated she’ll never figure out how to use it on her own? If your mother’s digitally inclined, chances are she already has the tech she needs and wants. And if she doesn’t, trying to choose it for her can be like trying to pick a pet for someone else - never a good idea. Instead, keep gift items simple, personal and nostalgic. county recorders office special Saturday hours SATURDAY HOURS PLANNED FOR MAY 19 The Clerk-Recorder Department will once again open its doors to the public on May 19, 2018 for its once-a-month Saturday hours. The department’s branch offices in Fullerton and Laguna Hills as well as the Old County Courthouse in Santa Ana, will be open from 10 am to 3 pm. Customers will be able to obtain marriage licenses, have marriage ceremonies performed, sub-mit passport applications, purchase passport photos and obtain vital and official records. The Orange County Archives will also be open from 10 am to 3 pm. The Archives are located in the basement of the Old County Courthouse in Santa Ana. On April 14th, the Orange County Clerk-Recorder Department hosted its 2nd Annual Passport Day at the Old County Courthouse in Santa Ana. During this event, the department

accepted 179 passport applications and took 114 passport photos. This represents a 113% in-crease in the number of passport applications accepted and an 87% increase in the number of passport photos taken during the depart-ment’s 1st Annual Passport Day last year. The turnout was great and most notably lots of families with children took advantage of this year’s Passport Day. Families and individuals were lining up for the event an hour ahead of opening time. Holding the event on a Saturday makes the passport applications process easier for parents, as both parents must be present to obtain a passport for children younger than 16. “It gives me great pleasure to personally see all the families who turned out for this event,” ClerkRecorder Hugh Nguyen said. “We are here to make it easier for these families and individuals to obtain the services that they need and I really appreciate the turnout and our staff for coming on a Saturday and doing a great job.” The department held its 1st Annual Passport Day last year at the Old County Courthouse. Last year, the

department accepted 84 pass-port applications and took 61 passport photos. The department’s 2nd Annual Passport Day is a record setting day for number of passport applications accepted and photos taken during a Saturday opening. Clerk-Recorder Hugh Nguyen is excited to host next year’s Passport Day and looks forward to continue meeting the public’s demand for passport services. If you need to get a passport and can’t make it during normal operating hours, your next opportunities will be Saturday, May 19, 2018 and Saturday June 23, 2018. The department will

Heritage House open this Saturday

The public is invited to embrace our storied history this Saturday, May 12 during a special Heritage House event at Melinda Park. The Heritage House “Open House” is from 1-3 p.m. at 28951 Melinda Road. Last Sunday drew curious Coto crowds to the Coto de Caza Sports Park where a remarkable assemblage of elegant automobiles embraced the winding roads of the park’s enchanting architecture. The Coto de Caza News photographers captured the enjoyment of the Coto de Caza residents as they strolled through the collection. A substantial amount of those vehicles were brought by Coto de Caza residents themselves, although some outsiders brought in some additional vehicles. Polished to perfection, these delightful automobiles sparkled in the radiance of an exceptionally nice day in Coto de Caza as a gentle breeze flowed through the canyon to cool an otherwise very warm day. they were models. “Cool guys always come to car shows, “they giggled. “An amazing group of Porsches’”, said Wayne Edelstein, legendary hair stylist and himself a collector/restorer of Porsche automobiles and a Coto resident. “These are trophy worthy cars,” he said, pointing to one of the automobiles on display. The crowd, which seemed to increase towards lunchtime, was estimated by some as approaching 1,500 visitors showed no signs of slowing down when the Coto de Caza News crew left around 11:30.

The Wings of Freedom Tour Unique Display at the John Wayne Airport / Lyon Air Museum from May 9th to 13th

In honor of our WWII Veterans ~ The Collings Foundation’s Wings of Freedom Tour Brings Extremely Rare Bomber and Fighter Aircraft for Local Living History Display as Part of 110city Nationwide Tour Participating in the Collings Foundation’s WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR, the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress “Nine O Nine” WWII Heavy Bomber, Consolidated B-24 Liberator “Witchcraft” WWII Heavy Bomber and North American B-25 Mitchell and P-51 Mustang fighter, will fly to Lyon Air Museum for a visit from May 9th to 13th. This is a rare opportunity to visit, explore, and learn more about these unique and rare treasures of aviation history. The B-17 is one of only 8 in flying condition in the United States , the B-24J is the sole remaining examples of its type flying in the World. The B-25 is best known for being used in the daring Doolittle raid. The P-51 Mustang was awarded the prestigious Grand Champion for restoration at EAA’s Oshkosh AirVenture. Visitors are invited to explore the aircraft inside and out - $12 for adults, $9 for seniors and veterans, $6 for children ages 5 -17, and free for children

under 5 is requested for access to up-close viewing and tours through the inside of the aircraft and access to Lyon Air Museum. Visitors may also experience the once-in-alifetime opportunity to actually take a 30-minute flight aboard these rare aircraft. Flights on either the B-17 or B-24 are $450 per person. ground tour times above. The Nationwide WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR is celebrating its 29th year and visits an average of 110 cities in over 35 states annually. Despite the risks of anti-aircraft fire, attacking enemy fighters, and the harrowing environment of sub-zero temperatures, many B-17s and B-24s safely brought their crews home. The P-51 Mustang was affectionately known as the bombers “Little Friend” – saving countless crews from attacking axis fighters. After the war, many aircraft were scrapped for their raw aluminum to rebuild a nation in post-war prosperity and therefore very few were spared. The rarity of the B-17, B-25, B-24 & P-51 - and their importance to telling the story of WWII is why the Collings Foundation continues to fly and display the aircraft nationwide. Photos by: Katya Williams Olive Crest saluted the “Wearin’ of the Green” at its St. Paddy’s Day Celebration for a sold-out crowd of 435 guests on St. Patrick’s Day at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort in Huntington Beach. The festive affair featured lively music by the Irish band Cillian’s Bridge, Irish dancers, whiskey sampling, silent and live auctions, a sit-down dinner and a Golden Ticket opportunity which offered the winner a choice of a live auction item (buyers were the proud wearers of flashing green blinky rings). Former NFL Rams’ star quarterback and ardent community supporter Vince Ferragamo served as master of ceremonies, with Carrie Brock taking the reins as event chair, assisted by former chairs Lorraine Bader and Lori Feeney. Other committee members included Board of Trustees President Steve Bernardy, Vice President Randy Rider, Lori LaPorte, Shelli Zeller, Gabriella Ayerst, Chris Selzer, and honorary chair Diana Casey. Also Olive Crest board member Jim Woodside with mentor Jessica assisting were Olive Crest Founders Dr. Donald and Lois Verleur, CEO Woodside and CEO Donald Verleur Donald Verleur, Executive Director OC Region Kerri Dunkelberger, and Executive Development Director Tim Bauer. Most important was the testimony of a young lady named Helen Wright, who lauded Olive Crest for helping turn her life around. Olive Crest mentor Jessica Woodside, who committed to being a mentor at last year’s gala, spoke glowingly about how her mentee and foster teen Lillie has blessed her life. Olive Crest recognized Applied Medical with its “Champion for the Children Award.” The company has given $99,114 in donations since 2011 to support the children and families of the nonprofit. Applied Medical’s Director of Community Relations, Jenna Hilal, accepted the award. Olive Crest’s volunteer group, Town Gown & Apron, was honored for its more than 25 years of support, contributing nearly $2 million to support Olive Crest’s children. The award was presented to the group’s leader, Diana Casey, who is credited as the backbone and inspirational leader of the group. Mama’s Mama knows best

The millennial mom-to-be uses an app to track her fertility and pregnancy progress, pins nursery ideas on Pinterest and researches baby gear on YouTube. She reads online advice on everything from what to eat (or not), to when to talk to a doctor about prescription prenatal vitamins and what to do with the placenta after delivering. Never without a smartphone in hand, armed with an app for everything, always connected or “on,” millennials were born in an era of emerging technology between 1980 and 1995, and have grown up in an ever-increasing digitally-enhanced environment. Access to technology and social media has defined every aspect of her life, including the

expectant millennial’s approach to pregnancy. It’s a drastically different world than when her own mother was pregnant. But what does this over-abundance of connectivity and information mean for the digital-savvy millennial momto-be? Per a recent poll, for nearly 60 percent it means there is too much conflicting advice on tips for a healthy pregnancy. In the poll conducted by Exeltis, the company that produces the number one doctor recommended prescription prenatal vitamin, Vitafol, 500 millennials and 500 baby boomers were asked to reveal details on their approach to pregnancy. While sifting through all the information available today was overwhelming to expectant millennials, only 36.2 percent of baby

boomer moms, whose pregnancies were “pre-Google” and social media, felt this way. In addition, in our constantlyconnected world it’s common for people to feel license to dispense unsolicited advice to expectant moms. Twice as many millennial moms report they received advice while they were pregnant that they disregarded or didn’t agree with as compared to baby boomer moms. That’s why it’s no surprise that with so much (often conflicting) soughtout and unsolicited information and advice, 51.8 percent of millennials said they had a hard time deciding which pregnancy advice to believe. “We have so much more information than they did years ago,” said one millennial in the study. “I feel like millennial moms have a lot more pressure placed on them to do everything ‘right.’” Thus, despite the advances in technology that make their pregnancies different (or perhaps, more likely, because of it), millennial moms are turning to their own mothers for advice, even more than their mothers turned to the generation before them. Millennials are using the “Grandma Filter” to essentially qualify and validate information that they are receiving from other sources. In fact, when it comes to preparing for parenting, millennials turn to their mother/mother figure more than any

other resource on a variety of topics. The “Grandma Filter” is number one when it comes to emotional/family concerns, relationship advice and determining what supplies she will need to register for. And, millennial moms also turn to their mother nearly three times more often than baby boomer moms would have regarding financial concerns in preparing for a new baby. Even though she has so many more resources at her disposal, and she still goes to her doctor, spouse/ significant other and friends and other family members on many matters, the millennial’s increased reliance on her own mother has changed significantly over the years. Still, there are some elements of pregnancy that have remained unchanged. More than half of all millennial and baby boomer mothers polled prepared for pregnancy by taking a childbirth class. More than 97 percent of millennial moms and 92 percent of boomer moms took prenatal vitamins. In addition, 80 percent of both groups recognize prescription prenatal vitamins are the right choice for any pregnant mother. Which all indicates that regardless of when they are pregnant, moms ultimately want what is best for her baby, but deciding what that is might best be determined with a slight tweak to the adage. Mother’s Day Proclamation 1870 by Mary Langenback Every one of us has had or has a mother or step mother, at some point in our lives. Mothers day has been celebrated since the early 1900’s. Although my own mother has passed away and I have no children of my own, I still remember her wonderful influence on my life. In celebration of mother’s day I wanted to learn about the history of mother’s day and was surprised to find out that it was originally a woman’s reaction to war. Julia Ward Howe, herself influenced by a one Anna Jarvis who sought to improve sanitation through “Mother’s Work days” in the mid 1850’s. So originally Mother’s day was a day for Mothers to work to improve the lives of those around them. Julia Ward Howe, who lived through the Civil War, saw it as the only way to attempt to stop men from warring with each other. Call it what you will, but her idea was a day of peace. In 1870 she gave a proclamation (Read in full at: http://womenshistory.about.com/ od/howejwriting/a/mothers_day.htm) for women to take counsel together after mourning their dead and to make an attempt to influence those around them, especially their family members, to do all they can to stop war and live at peace with their Page 16

brothers and sisters around the globe. It was to be remembered that war has many other side effects than just the funerals during and afterward. There was an emotional effect upon women all over the world, crying for their dead, some who had depended upon those men for support, in societies that do not allow women to work. Some of these women with no men to depend on must get married to men they don’t like, or go into prostitution for survival. The effect also was (and is) economic, men in the 1800’s were the primary bread winners even here in America. Mothers day was first celebrated in a small church, the church in Virginia where Anna Jarvis’ daughter attended. Soon this holiday spread to most of the other 48 continental states. By 1920 it had been celebrated as a national holiday. Slowly, but surely we have stripped it of its original meaning, and have continued to war against ourselves (even our own family members and neighbors) and those of other countries. Even now we are at war in several places in the middle east. Our sons, and husbands, and fathers and lovers have gone off to war and this month we are going to sit at home with those who have stayed behind and celebrate the fact that we, or our relatives and friends,

are mothers. Some husbands and families will cry (inside at least), because now there are some mothers at war. We have come a long, long way and it is so very, very sad to say where we have ended up. We celebrate, adore, worship, and congratulate the mothers, the first time mothers, the oldest mother’s, the youngest mothers and the mothers with the most children. This is not how Mother’s day was supposed to be celebrated. As I said earlier, the original Mothers day was “celebrated” by mothers going out and caring about the health and sanitation of their communities. So, this Mother’s day when you

are buying her gifts and taking her out to dinner, take a long, long look at her. Think of what the world would be without our mothers, without our mother’s love and teaching. Think about what femininity meant to society in the past. It meant a caregiver in the family, a teacher, a spiritual leader, one who would (ideally) teach about peace and brotherhood. Then, talk together, after the younger kids have gone to bed, about how mothers, fathers and possibly what your family can do this next year to influence others to stop war. Lets get back to Julia Ward Howe’s original plea: Disarm! Disarm! or even the 1960’s motto: “Make love, not war”!
