Mother’s Day Proclamation 1870

by Mary Langenback Every one of us has had or has a mother or step mother, at some point in our lives. Mothers day has been celebrated since the early 1900’s. Although my own mother has passed away and I have no children of my own, I still remember her wonderful influence on my life. In celebration of mother’s day I wanted to learn about the history of mother’s day and was surprised to find out that it was originally a woman’s reaction to war. Julia Ward Howe, herself influenced by a one Anna Jarvis who sought to improve sanitation through “Mother’s Work days” in the mid 1850’s. So originally Mother’s day was a day for Mothers to work to improve the lives of those around them. Julia Ward Howe, who lived through the Civil War, saw it as the only way to attempt to stop men from warring with each other. Call it what you will, but her idea was a day of peace. In 1870 she gave a proclamation (Read in full at: http://womenshistory.about.com/ od/howejwriting/a/mothers_day.htm) for women to take counsel together after mourning their dead and to make an attempt to influence those around them, especially their family members, to do all they can to stop war and live at peace with their

brothers and sisters around the globe. It was to be remembered that war has many other side effects than just the funerals during and afterward. There was an emotional effect upon women all over the world, crying for their dead, some who had depended upon those men for support, in societies that do not allow women to work. Some of these women with no men to depend on must get married to men they don’t like, or go into prostitution for survival. The effect also was (and is) economic, men in the 1800’s were the primary bread winners even here in America. Mothers day was first celebrated in a small church, the church in Virginia where Anna Jarvis’ daughter attended. Soon this holiday spread to most of the other 48 continental states. By 1920 it had been celebrated as a national holiday. Slowly, but surely we have stripped it of its original meaning, and have continued to war against ourselves (even our own family members and neighbors) and those of other countries. Even now we are at war in several places in the middle east. Our sons, and husbands, and fathers and lovers have gone off to war and this month we are going to sit at home with those who have stayed behind and celebrate the fact that we, or our relatives and friends,

are mothers. Some husbands and families will cry (inside at least), because now there are some mothers at war. We have come a long, long way and it is so very, very sad to say where we have ended up. We celebrate, adore, worship, and congratulate the mothers, the first time mothers, the oldest mother’s, the youngest mothers and the mothers with the most children. This is not how Mother’s day was supposed to be celebrated. As I said earlier, the original Mothers day was “celebrated” by mothers going out and caring about the health and sanitation of their communities. So, this Mother’s day when you

are buying her gifts and taking her out to dinner, take a long, long look at her. Think of what the world would be without our mothers, without our mother’s love and teaching. Think about what femininity meant to society in the past. It meant a caregiver in the family, a teacher, a spiritual leader, one who would (ideally) teach about peace and brotherhood. Then, talk together, after the younger kids have gone to bed, about how mothers, fathers and possibly what your family can do this next year to influence others to stop war. Lets get back to Julia Ward Howe’s original plea: Disarm! Disarm! or even the 1960’s motto: “Make love, not war”! Buy tickets

Help nurture kids’ love of nature with easy, basic, backyard bird-feeding tips Parents and children enjoy spending quality time together, but it’s not always easy to find shared interests. The backyard, however, can provide the perfect place for generations to meet when parents help kids learn the delights of birdwatching and bird-feeding. Interacting with backyard birds benefits children on many levels, including teaching them the responsibility of caring for other living things to nurturing their appreciation of nature. Fall and winter are the perfect times to introduce kids to backyard bird care; as food sources dwindle in their natural habitat, birds will frequent a backyard where feeders serve up seed and suet daily. The wild bird experts at Cole’s Wild Bird Products offer some guidance for families launching bird feeding lessons: Feeder facts: Different bird species like different types of feeders, but some styles, such as tube feeders, will attract a large variety of birds. Basic bird feeder styles include: * Tube - Best for serving seed, tube feeders keep the contents clean and dry, providing birds with access to the food through feeding ports. They’re great all-purpose feeders and will attract the most variety of songbirds. It’s important to clean tube feeders regularly, so choose a model that’s easy to clean. Cole’s high-quality tubular feeders are made with state-of-the-art materials to prevent warping, discoloration, and they feature Quick Clean removable bases that make cleaning fast and simple. Feeder bottoms pop off with the push of a button. * Bowl feeders - If separating seeds into different feeders gets too complicated, bowl feeders can be an all-in, easy solution. Options like Cole’s Bountiful Bowl Feeder can

accommodate a variety of feed types, from seed and suet to mealworms, fruits and nuts. Bowl feeders are especially good starter feeders for children since they are easy to fill and clean. * Suet feeders - During cold winter months, suet is an essential source of energy for birds. Suet feeders can range from a simple mesh onion bag to a wire or plastic mesh box that affixes to a tree, or post. Woodpeckers, warblers, nuthatches, titmice, jays and chickadees love suet. Whatever styles of feeder you choose - and a mix is ideal - be sure to select feeders that are sturdy enough to withstand winter weather and unwanted visitors, like squirrels. They should be tight enough to keep seeds dry, and easy to disassemble for cleaning. Most importantly, keep them maintained and stocked - if you neglect to feed them, birds will go elsewhere. Food fun: In order to attract birds, it’s important to serve high-quality food. Seed blends with too much cheap seed, known as fill, won’t satisfy birds, and you’ll end up with a mound of discarded fill under feeders and few feathered friends in your backyard. Here are some basic foods birds look for in winter: * Suet - Long gone are the days when serving suet was a messy proposition. Kids can serve suet without messing up their little hands when you choose convenient suet cakes, kibbles, nuts and pearls. Many of these suet options are mixed with other treats birds love, such as nuts, grains and berries. You can even find options with habanero pepper infused in the fat to dissuade squirrels from dining on the suet. Nutberry Suet Blend, by Cole’s, mixes human-grade cherries, apples and blueberry-

flavored cranberries, preferred nuts, nutritious insect suet kibbles and whole kernel sunflower meats into an energy-packed, powerhouse feed. * Seed - Many songbirds favor seeds, and in winter it can be difficult for birds to find seeds in nature. From black oil sunflower seeds and Niger to seed mixes, it’s important to serve a variety of high-quality seeds. Choose mixes with large proportions of sunflower seeds and avoid ones with fillers like wheat, milo and corn; birds will pick out the appealing seeds and kick out the filler. You can learn more about seed mixes at www. coleswildbird.com. * Dried mealworms - Although the name might imply an “ick factor” that appeals to kids, serving dried mealworms is easy and messfree. High in protein, mealworms are favored by bluebirds, flickers, woodpeckers, siskins and nuthatches. Plus you don’t have to feed them or keep them in the fridge like with live mealworms! Introducing kids to backyard birdfeeding is an enjoyable - and easy - way to connect families with nature - and to each other. All you’ll need is a feeder, bird feed and some time. The birds will come, kids will surely enjoy the experience, and you’ll all have some good family fun.

THE MOVERS AND SHAKERS OF LADERA RANCH; SPOTLIGHT ON LADERA RANCH CIVIC COUNCIL MEMBER GARY KEPHART Part of a Continuing Series by Ladera Ranch News on Prominent Members of the Community of Ladera Ranch.

Gary Kephart By Amy R. Spurgeon-Hoffman, Reporter for Ladera Ranch News Gary Kephart is a Southern California native. He told the Ladera Ranch News “We lived in Huntington Beach through 2nd grade, moved to Colorado for a year, and then we moved back to Cerritos, California (Go Gahr Gladiators!). He told us that some of his favorite childhood memories were:” I remember going to Disneyland and using the E tickets. I also remember traveling in the back section of the family’s Ford Esquire station wagon on the long trip to Kansas to visit grandparents”. Early Years The Kephart family moved to Ladera Ranch in 2003. He says; “We had been living in a condo by the lake in Rancho Santa Margarita and finally decided to buy a house. My wife fell in love with the house and that’s why we ended up in Ladera. It turns out that the whole Ladera Ranch community is pretty darn good also.”

He graduated from UC Irvine in 1986 with a B.S. in Information and Computer Science. ” I’ve been a software engineer since 1986. I’ve worked in various industries including aerospace, multimedia, stocks, mortgage and currently medical manufacturing. I specialize in enterprise-level business systems. Always an active community member Gary Kephart says “I ran for the LARMAC Board a few years after I moved in and I’ve been a neighborhood representative for many years, so this just seemed like the next logical step to get more involved in the community. I was elected in September of 2013.” Gary Kephart and his wife, Laura, were married in 2001. Their two daughters are both now married with two children each, the eldest being nine and the youngest being three. Best buddy My wife and one of our daughters

were working together and had just arrived at work one day in 2003 when a small, dirty dog pretty much leapt into my daughter’s arms as if to say they were her last hope. I got home that night and she started barking at me almost non-stop for an hour. My first words to my wife that night were “Honey, how long is this dog staying with us?” Now we’re best buddies. Favorite projects at LRCC “I’m very interested in the future governance of Ladera Ranch. It’s been very interesting learning from LAFCO what it takes to be a city and where Ladera stands in that regard. I’ve also enjoyed being the liaison to Capistrano Unified School District, attending the board meetings, and learning what it takes to run a school district and how that affects Ladera Ranch Cityhood for Ladera Ranch? When asked if he envisions cityhood for Ladera Ranch, he replied” Not in the near term, but possibly in the long term. We don’t have the tax base to guarantee that we would thrive as a city, but if we join with Rancho Mission Viejo, their future commercial section might help out with that.” We asked if he thinks Ladera Ranch should have smaller ‘Mom and Pop” stores or does he see larger chains moving in? He replied:” I like having smaller “mom and pop” stores in Ladera. I think that having more variety would help. I also think that having the county become more involved with business development here in Ladera could help businesses start up and thrive. Ten Things we didn’t know about Gary Kephart When Ladera Ranch News asked Gary Kephart to name10 things people would be surprised/interested to read about you, he said: 1. I was a busboy at Disneyland through college. 2. I’m adopted. 3. I’ve done Renaissance and Wild West reenacting. 4. I go to the Gilroy Garlic Festival for my birthday. 5. I started running back in

September. 6. I can juggle. 7. I’ve wrote a reference website for the Wheel of Time series. It’s listed in the back covers of the last books in the series. I also had dinner with the author and have a pre-release copy of one of the books. 8. My favorite television shows are The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. 9. My favorite hobbies are movies. I love going to movies, especially sci-fi, action and comedy movies. 10. I don’t listen much to regular radio in my car anymore. Instead, I listen to Pandora. My favorite stations include Adult Alternative, AC/DC, Collective Soul, INXS, Ska, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Scott Joplin. biggest challenges facing Ladera residents? In response to our question about some of the biggest challenges facing Ladera residents? He replied: “We’re lucky that we don’t have a big crime problem in Ladera Ranch. Still, it would be nice to have some extra protection to take care of issues like vehicle break-ins. Having that extra protection would be easier to manage if we became a city and therefore had more local control. I am concerned with the possibility of more traffic along our major streets such as Antonio and Crown Valley, with the new housing being developed in Rancho Mission Viejo plus the impending completion of the La Pata Extension. Favorite Ladera Ranch events throughout the year? Kephart says “My favorite is the 4th of July event. I love fireworks. I think I’ll participate in the Freedom Run this year. ”His favorite Ladera restaurants to visit? “I’m a big fan of family diners, so Corky’s is my favorite, but I also frequent Casa Ranchero (I love the diablo-style dishes) and BLK Burgers (I’m hoping they’ll get Classical Carnage back to play there). “The penalty that good men pay for not being interested in politics is to be governed by lesser men.” -- Plato.

New baby checklist: Tips to start securing your child’s future

Your new bundle of joy has just arrived. In addition to midnight feedings and changing diapers, new parents need to take important steps to set up their children for success in the years to come. According to FindLaw.com, the nation’s leading website for free legal information, the first and most important step is obtaining an official birth certificate. This document is the gateway to obtaining other important documentation throughout life, such as a Social Security number, a stateissued photo I.D. or a passport. Here are additional tips from FindLaw.com that every new parent should consider: Get a Social Security number: Many hospitals allow you to apply for a Social Security number at the same time they are recording your child’s birth. You’ll need the number for a variety of reasons, from declaring your new child as a dependent on your federal and state income taxes to setting up education savings and retirement accounts. Child identity theft is a growing problem, so be sure to safeguard this information. Obtain custodial rights: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of four firstborn babies is born to an unmarried couple living together. In nearly every state, the mother has 100 percent custody rights until paternity (identity of the father) is established. It’s in the

child’s financial interest to confirm paternity to guarantee that the father helps support the child financially until he or she turns 18. On the other side, if the father wants to guarantee visitation rights or have a say in how the child is raised, it’s in his interest to initiate the paternity process. Sign up your child for health insurance: Immediately add your child as a dependent on your health insurance plan. If you don’t have coverage, research options online or through your state. Remember, it will be mandatory for everyone to have coverage in 2014 with the passage of the Affordable Health Care Act. Consider term life insurance: A customized term life insurance policy can help cover expenses in the event that you or your spouse unexpectedly dies before your child reaches adulthood. You also may consider purchase coverage to pay off your home or any debts. Select a legal guardian: The other issue to settle in the unexpected death of a parent is to choose a legal guardian in your will. This person would assume legal responsibility for your child until adulthood. Before you designate someone for this, talk to the person to see if he or she is willing to accept the responsibility. If you don’t have a will, new parents can find an attorney with experience in wills and estates in their local area by visiting FindLaw.com.

Fingerprint your child: While it is horrifying to imagine, in the event that your child should go missing, fingerprints and a recent photo of your child can assist authorities. There are many kits available online for you to gather and organize this information. Get your child immunized: Many state laws require that newborns be immunized for a number of childhoodrelated diseases before they can enter day care or school. Establish a relationship with a pediatrician and make sure that your child is immunized at the recommended stages of growth. Know your legal rights at work: Check with your employer about policies related to raising a child and how a new child may affect your

benefits. Review paid-time off, sick day and other attendance policies so you are prepared for your child’s own sick days, school conferences and other events. Start saving now: As soon as you receive your new child’s Social Security number, you should immediately consider opening up a 529 savings plan or Coverdell education savings account. Both can be used to cover future qualified educational expenses for your child. Based on the power of compounding returns, investing over a longer period is more effective than waiting until you have a large amount to invest so even if it’s a small amount, start investing right away. -(BPT)

Cook Up a Mother’s Day to Remember

Mother’s Day is a time for wining, dining and celebrating moms everywhere. Make this Mother’s Day one to remember by hosting a special brunch get-together for the special ladies in your life. Although quality time together is the true purpose of the day, you can add some special touches to help create a one-of-a-kind brunch to share old memories while you make new ones. Plan your tablescape. Colorful, fragrant flowers and luxurious linens make your everyday table shine. Use plates in complementing shades and sparkling glassware for an elegant touch. If you have room, add personal touches to the centerpiece, such as

R.S.I.

mementoes from shared trips or small picture frames with pictures of the two of you through the years. Prepare a sophisticated menu. Give a nod to the importance of the day with dishes that are a step above standard brunch fare. A richly flavored entree such as this Spring Vegetable and Chevre Tart looks elegant but is surprisingly easy to make. For a cohesive spread, remember to give the basics a boost, too, such as a homemade flavored whipped butter. Offer a gift with meaning. To truly elevate the occasion, serve (or gift) your mom with a deliciously meaningful wine, such as Cambria Benchbreak Chardonnay or Pinot Noir from the famed Santa Maria bench in Santa Barbara County. Cambria is a family-owned winery that believes in honoring women across the United States and globally. Each year, the winery gives $100,000 to women making a difference in their communities through their Seeds of Empowerment program. For more recipes and ideas to enhance your celebrations, visit cambriawines.com. Let syrup cool completely. Add syrup and rosemary to whipped butter and mix. Serve chilled. Homemade Whipped Butter 1/2 quart heavy cream 1/2 teaspoon salt (up to 3/4 teaspoon, to taste) In food processor, mix butter until cream turns to consistency of cottage cheese and starts to separate from buttermilk, about 3-5 minutes of constant mixing. Strain butter from buttermilk. Use wooden spoon to knead butter in water (just like dough) to remove all remaining buttermilk. Drain and repeat until water is clear. Remaining whipped butter is ready to serve or for adding flavoring ingredients.

National Charity League Juniors, Newport Beach Chapter Celebrates with a Fashion Fling! Photos by: Ann Chatillon The Newport Beach chapter of National Charity League, Juniors hosted

Co-Chair Wendy Blackband, Co-Chair Kristin Sheward, President Jennifer Middlemas, and Co-Chair Brooke Willems

its 30th annual mother-daughter luncheon and fashion show at the Balboa Bay Club and Resort. This year’s luncheon theme, “Fashion Fling,” proved once again that although fashions may change with the seasons, enthusiastic community support for outstanding organizations like National Charity League, Jrs. is never out of style. More than 430 guests stepped out for an afternoon of fun, food and fashion supporting NCL, Jrs. in raising nearly $80,000.00 this year in support of three local charities: High Hopes Head Injury Program, Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF) and the Harry and Grace Steele Children’s Center at Orange Coast College. The Balboa Bay Club’s entrance and ballroom was transformed in keeping with the theme “Fashion Fling” for the festive afternoon that honored the

out-going 6th-grade members and their mothers. The adults were served with a Cobb Salad with Bread and Cheesecake for dessert. The children enjoyed lemonade, cheeseburger sliders, French fries, fruit skewers and sundaes for dessert! During lunch, a wonderful silent auction was happening with plenty of items to choose from for both adults and the children. Two Adele tickets to her upcoming concert in October in the premier section with parking was up for grabs as well as four tickets to see Dave Matthews at the Irvine Verizon Wireless Theater. A vacation at the Four Seasons Punta Mita for 4 nights along with airfare, two lodge level tickets for the American Music Awards Show and round trip flight for 4 people from Orange County to Las Vegas on a Phenom 100 JetSuite were just some of the Adult items. The kids had their share to bid on with a Le Pain Quotidien Private Baking Class for up

to 12 kids for a fun birthday party, 4 Selena Gomez concert tickets at the Honda Center and more to them to choose from. Following lunch, models from Bloomingdale’s Fashion Island hit the runway. They modeled a variety of designers from Tory Burch, Alice and Olivia, DKNY, and Kate Spade. The lively show included plenty of highfives from the models passing by the lineup of attentive young girls in their traditional place along the runway. The Newport Beach Chapter of National Charity League, Juniors, is composed of women with daughters ranging from kindergarten through 6th grade. The purpose of NCL Jrs. is to initiate and promote charitable endeavors, and to foster mother-daughter relationships in philanthropic, cultural and social activities. Foot care advice for new moms and babies Few things in life are as darling as a newborn’s little feet, and most new moms take great joy in counting 10 tiny, perfect toes. But foot health can be a source of anxiety for both new and expectant mothers, who may wonder about the best ways to care for their baby’s feet, and how to cope with changes in their own feet. “Pregnancy creates many changes in the body, and can even affect the size of a woman’s feet,” says Dr. Matthew Garoufalis, a podiatrist and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). “And even though newborns aren’t walking yet, it’s understandable that mothers may have some concerns about how to best take care of their baby’s feet.” The discomforts of pregnancy are common and well-known, ranging from back pain and frequent bathroom trips to feet that are both sore and bigger. “It’s not at all unusual for a woman to gain a shoe size while pregnant,” Garoufalis says. “Increased weight puts more pressure on the foot, the arch flattens a bit and the foot elongates. Just a quarterinch increase in foot length is enough to prompt a change in shoe size.” While it’s probably impossible to completely avoid foot challenges during pregnancy, momsto-be can take steps to minimize them: * Control weight gain. Added weight is the most likely cause of foot expansion. Do your best to follow your obstetrician’s guidelines for how much weight you should gain throughout the pregnancy. * Avoid high heels. Sure you see celebrities accessorizing their baby bumps with stilettos, but a lower heel during pregnancy will relieve pressure on the foot. Also, lower heels will provide you with

greater stability during a time when newly gained weight might throw off your balance. It’s easy to find plenty of pretty, stylish lower heels - 1 to 2 inches in height - that will look and feel great while you’re pregnant. * Comfort and support should be key considerations any time you choose footwear, but they are even more important for pregnant women. With extra weight and pressure on your feet for nine months, you need a shoe that provides support and cushioning. Avoid thin-soled shoes (including flip-flops and ballet flats); look for shoes with thicker soles and plenty of cushioning inside the shoes. Whatever shoe you choose, it should bend only at the ball of the foot, and you should never be able to twist the sole or bend it anywhere else. While it’s common for women’s feet to enlarge during pregnancy - and remain that size even after delivery - generally that size increase occurs only with a first pregnancy. So you shouldn’t worry that your feet will continue to grow with subsequent pregnancies. Instead, many new moms will worry about their new baby’s feet. “The good news is, as long as the baby’s feet are healthy at birth most newborns won’t require special care for their feet,” Garoufalis says. “Caring for your baby’s feet is much like caring for the rest of her body.” Don’t worry if your baby’s feet look discolored or wrinkled or even have flaky, peeling skin when she is born. After nine months in protective fluid within the womb, they’re bound to look a bit different from yours. Your pediatrician will look for any obvious abnormalities of your baby’s feet and legs, and will let you know what to do if he or she finds some

concern. Use baby nail clippers to keep your child’s toenails trimmed, cutting straight across to prevent ingrown toenails. Be sure to thoroughly dry baby’s feet after a bath, and choose soft, anti-microbial socks that don’t wrinkle or bunch to keep her feet warm and protected. When she starts to walk, bare feet are best inside the house as she’s learning the finer points of getting around. Outside, put her in a lightweight, flexible shoe made of natural materials. If foot problems run in your family, consider having your child examined by a podiatrist when she begins to walk. He or she can examine your child’s feet to ensure they’re growing normally. You can find a podiatrist that specializes in pediatrics at www.apma.org. - (BPT)

FAMILY FEATURES

rom homemade childhood favorites that warm the heart to delectable desserts, no one works their magic in the kitchen quite like mom. When trying to decide what to get your favorite lady for Mother’s Day this year, look for gifts that allow her to channel her inner foodie, chef or baker. The best gifts are always those that keep on giving. Through Cook for the Cure, a 15-year partnership between KitchenAid and Susan G. Komen, more than $10.7 million has been raised for the fight against breast cancer. In 2016, KitchenAid will donate at least $450,000 to Komen through the program, regardless of sales. The Cook for the Cure product collection, ranging from pink stand mixers and polka dot bowls to pink food choppers, painted plates and hand mixers, is an easy way to give thanks to mom and raise awareness for a cause that benefits so many women. For other gift ideas that help support the cause, visit www.KitchenAid.com and http://CookfortheCure.KitchenAid.com.

This hand blender ($59.99) comes with a 3-cup BPA-free jar with lid, so mom can blend away, safely.

An Essential, Everyday Tool

If some of her best culinary creations include savory sauces, delightful dressings and delicious dips, Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to treat mom to an upgrade. This 3.5-cup Food Chopper in Pink is convenient for everyday use and takes up minimal space in the kitchen. With two one-touch speed settings for chop and puree, this chopper ($49.99) is ideal for creating a spicy salsa, creamy hummus or garden-fresh pesto.

Blending Style with Power

With its roomy, 60-ounce patented diamond pitcher design and stainless steel blades, the 5-Speed Diamond Blender in Cranberry creates a powerful vortex to thoroughly blend everything from soups to smoothies.
