The OC Fair open now until August 13 Here are some highlights: New OC Fair rides The OC Fair is adding three new rides this year and one new funhouse, making the carnival bigger and more exciting than ever before! The new La Grande Wheel XL is so big that it was transported on 22 semi-trailer trucks to get to the Fairgrounds. It is 130 feet tall, weighs 616,000 pounds and features a half-million LED lights. The 36 cabins are climate-controlled and hold six to eight people. It takes the Ferris wheel about three and a half minutes to make a full circle and can carry about 2,000 passengers an hour. La Grande Wheel XL cost $6 million to build and is one of the largest traveling observation wheels in the western hemisphere. This giant new Ferris wheel was manufactured in Europe and is known as the Mercedes Benz of carnival wheels. But two is better than one! For the first time ever, OC Fair will feature two giant Ferris wheels to whisk riders high into the sky for a panoramic view. La Grande Wheel XL will be joined by the Big Wheel. Standing more than 108 feet tall, the Big Wheel features the newest technology for a smooth ride. It’s equipped with LED lights and 24 open-air gondolas. Also making its debut at the OC
Fair is Endeavor – an open-air ride in which passengers are suspended in their seats and experience 3G acceleration. Riders will feel the sensation of flying 60 feet through the air at 25 miles per hour. A new funhouse, Rockin’ Rodeo, will be coming, too, with zany twists and turns around every corner. These are all from Ray Cammack Shows, and join returning favorites such as Big Top Swinger, Cliff Hanger, Cyclone, Insanity, Mach 1, Speed, Wild River and more. For a full list of carnival rides, visit http://ocfair.com/oc-fair/things-to-do/ carnival/ Fun for everyone OC Brew Hee Haw brings the best in craft beer to the Fair and fans can sample more than 80 brews. If you prefer wine, visit The Courtyard for wine tastings, vino by the glass and assorted nibbles. There is plenty for children, too. Check out the Kids Can Cook show at Centennial Farm and while you’re there, catch milking demonstrations, look for new baby animals and visit the honey-tasting bar. Returning favorites for the whole
family include the Peking Acrobats, Russell Brothers Family Circus, AllAlaskan Racing Pigs and kids’eating competitions every evening in the Explorium. Don’t miss Crafters Village, Carnival of Products and Parade of Products – tons of special shopping deals for Fairgoers. OC Fair deals Super Pass – Enjoy all 23 days of the Fair for the best price! LADERA RANCH CIVIC COUNCIL MEETINGS RESUME SEPTEMBER 18
From left: Councilmember Stephanie Ramsey, Councilmember Amir Arbabi, Vice Chairman Gary Kephart, Chairman Jett McCormick, and Councilmember Mike Ellzey The regular meeting of the Civic Council of Ladera Ranch has been cancelled for the summer. Current council members are; Chairman Jett McCormick, Vice Chairman Gary Kephart, and councilmember Mike Ellzey, Councilmember Amir Arbabi and Councilmember Stefanie Ramsey. Councilmember Mike Ellzey announced that he would propose to adjourn the entire council for the entire summer as he felt that the council was not being productive in the monthly meetings and would benefit by more organizational skills. This suggestion was met with a lengthy discourse by chairman Jett McCormick who stated that “it is the purpose of the civic council to be available for the residents of Ladera Ranch even during the summer months. Councilman Ellzey argued that very few members of the community attended the monthly council meetings and he said that he would continue with his plan to make the motion to adjourn the council during the summer months but did not make the motion at this Page 10
meeting. Councilmember Mike Ellzey contemplated making a motion to adjourn the civic council for the summer but no formal motion was made. Crossing Guards and Traffic Complaints In a previous council meeting Orange County Sheriff Lt. Mitch Wang added that there have been no crossing guard complaints during the school term but there have been some traffic flow complaints throughout the area of Ladera Ranch indicating that at a minimum the crossing guards are able to slow down traffic in school crossing zones. Residents say this is likely to be a concern when school resumes. Residential street lighting and paving concerns Councilmember Amir Arbabi gave a lengthy report concerning the micro- surfacing of streets particularly on Sienna in June. Of concern was the slurry on residential streets and the new test product slurry in Covenant Hills. Councilmember Arbabi suggested that there were also some developing issues with

Segerstrom Center Arts and Business Leaders raised $300,000 this year hotos by Doug Gifford P Segerstrom Center for the Arts honored Charles Zhang and Jesse Bagley during its annual Arts and Business Leadership Awards Dinner with an attendance of 300 supporters, business executives, and VIP’s. The Arts and Business Leadership Awards Dinner included a networking cocktail party, dinner and awards presentation in Samueli Theater, followed by a performance of The Bodyguard in Segerstrom Hall. The evening continued with a post-performance party at Water Grill, where guests and the show’s cast mingled, dined and danced to the music of Reflexx courtesy of Yamaha. The Distinguished Leader Award pays tribute to an established corporate leader and the Rising Leader Award to a young corporate star, both of whom have demonstrated exemplary business leadership and consistent, generous support to Orange County’s arts organizations. Zhang received the Center’s Distinguished Leader Award and Bagley the Rising Leader Award. The Arts and Business Leadership Awards Dinner also serves as a fundraiser to support Center community engagement and education programs and raised $300,000 this year. During his comments, Bagley said, “Segerstrom Center for the Arts plays an integral part in facilitating the dreams of many, especially the children right here in Orange County who are underserved and underprivileged. In giving back, we do make a huge difference. Very often, we may never even meet or know the children and families we have helped. Personally, I find there is something very profound and gratifying about that.” A highlight of the evening occurred when Charles Zhang concluded his remarks, relating the story of his arrival in the United States virtually penniless, and seeing and taking opportunities presented to him: “Tonight,” said Zhang, “I’d like to thank all friends and the new friends. Let’s run the race together!” During a standing ovation, he led everyone in the song made famous by Josh Groban, “You Raise Me Up”. Proceeds from the Arts and Business Leadership Awards Dinner help make many programs possible and accessible to children throughout Orange County. These include community engagement programs developed through the Center for Dance and Innovation (CDI) and Center Without Boundaries, which connect the Center with the many diverse communities in Orange County. The CDI supports flagship artistic programming and a wide range of projects that celebrate innovation, nurture creativity and engage audiences of the future. It is home to the ABT Gillespie School and the School of Dance and Music for Children with Disabilities. The Center Without Boundaries develops partnerships with non-cultural organizations to help them in their own efforts to respond to the ever-changing needs of the community. Pau Maui Vodka sponsored the pre-event reception. Kia Motors America and Zion Enterprises were Platinum Sponsors. Kia is the official automotive partner of the Center, and was on hand with the West Coast debut of its new Stinger as well as a photo booth for souvenirs and gifts for each guest. The evening also included a live auction for two Broadway show packages provided by the Center, each raising $7,000. Segerstrom Center is a leader among the nation’s performing arts centers for providing education programs designed to inspire young people through the arts. The Center’s programs reach hundreds of thousands of students each year in five Southern California counties. Community engagement programs developed through the Center for Dance and Innovation and Center Without Boundaries also connect the Center more comprehensively with Orange County’s many diverse communities.
