The U.S. National Racquetball Team concluded play in the 18 th International Racquetball Federation World Championships with Gold Medals in Men’s Singles, Women’s Doubles, and Men’s Team along with Silver Medals in Men’s Doubles, Overall Team and Women’s Team. Rocky Carson, 37, of Ladera Ranch, Calif., added to his legendary international record with his fifthstraight Singles World Championship title. Carson sealed his Gold Medal performance with a three-game victory over Daniel De La Rosa of Mexico 15-11, 5-15, 11-5. In completing what is now a decade of dominance in the bi-annual World Championships, along with his backto-back Pan Am Games Singles Gold Medals, Carson has cemented his legacy as the most decorated man in the history of IRF competition. Aimee Ruiz, 41, of Whitehouse Station, N.J. and Janel Tisinger, 33, of Simi Valley, Calif. teamed up to win the Women’s Doubles World Championship. In the final, the duo defeated two-time defending champions Paola Longoria and Samantha Salas of Mexico, 15-11, 9-15, 11-8. For Ruiz, this was her third Doubles World Championship title

with as many partners. This victory marked the first World Championship for Tisinger, an accomplishment made more special with her mother, USA Racquetball Hall of Fame member Debra Tisinger-Moore, serving as Assistant Coach. The United States also brought home a Silver Medal in Men’s Doubles where Jake Bredenbeck, 24, of Marine on St. Croix., MN and Jose Diaz, 23 of Stockton, Calif. lost in the finals to Mexicans Alvaro Beltran and Javier Moreno, 12-15, 9-15. In the Overall Team competition, Team USA finished second to Mexico as a result of the Gold Medal performances of Carson, Ruiz and Tisinger, as well as the Silver Medal performance in Men’s Doubles. The United States Men won the Men’s Team competition by the narrowest of margins over Mexico. In addition to Carson’s Singles Gold and the Silver Medal in Men’s Doubles, Chris Crowther, 37 of Carlsbad, Calif., added valuable points to the Men’s Team’s one-point victory by reaching the quarterfinals in Singles competition. On the Women’s side, the Doubles Championship for Ruiz and Tisinger secured a second-place finish.

Rhonda Rajsich, 37 of Fountain Hills, Ariz., and Michelle Key, 27 of Gilbert, Ariz., both contributed to the Women’s Team’s Silver Medal in Singles play. Jazz Prodigy Grace Kelly Performs at Festival of Arts Saturday august 6

The popular Concerts on the Green music series, presented by Cambria Estate Vineyard and Winery, continues at the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts on Saturday, August 6 from 1 – 2:30pm with saxophonist Grace Kelly from TV’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Grace Kelly is a saxophonist, singer, songwriter, composer and arranger from Brookline, Massachusetts. Having studied saxophone since the age of ten, she is rapidly making her way up in the jazz music world. The seven-time winner of the Downbeat critics poll recorded her first album, Dreaming when she was twelve. At fourteen, she received the first of her ASCAP Foundation awards for her composition “Every Road I Walked” and was invited to perform with the Boston Pops. Among Kelly’s critically acclaimed releases are collaborations with jazz legends Lee Konitz on GRACEfulLEE and Phil Woods on The Man With the Hat. A graduate from the Berklee College of Music in 2011 with a degree in professional music, Kelly has taught residency workshops there since 2012. In December 2015, she was invited by Jon Batiste as a regular on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s band, Stay Human, playing multiple reeds and singing. Kelly has recently completed her eighth studio album, Trying To Figure It Out, which Page 4

expands on her longstanding interest in genre bending while maintaining a jazz foundation. “Grace Kelly is one of today’s hottest young musicians,” said Susan Davis, director of special events for the Festival of Arts. “At only 24, she plays with the talent, sophistication and charisma of a seasoned performer.” Grace Kelly will perform on Saturday, August 6 from 1 – 2:30pm on stage at the Festival green. Concerts on the Green are free with Festival of Arts Admission. Limited seating available in reserved section for $25 per person per concert. Includes Festival admission. Call (800) 487-3378. the history of the Sawdust festival The Sawdust was originally called the Laguna Artists and Gallery Owners Association after breaking away from the Festival of Arts in 1965, in protest of that show’s jurying system. That first festival was located on a vacant lot at the bottom of Park Avenue (on the Peacock lot) with only a few dozen exhibitors. It was called the ‘Rejects Festival’ by the media. There was no show in 1966, but the show did reappear, with more exhibitors, in 1967 on an empty lot on North Coast Highway (The Kronquist lot). That show was a great success and led to the artists moving to its current location on Laguna Canyon Road, leasing the property from Walter and Dorothy Funk, and when the artists spread sawdust on the ground to combat the dust and mud, the media called it the ‘Sawdust Festival,’ and that name has identified the show for decades. Looking for room to expand, in 1968 the show moved to its present three-acre site at 935 Laguna Canyon Road, welcoming one and all with the promise to educate the public as well as provide a sales outlet for unrestricted art.Today, artists

Some of the first booths ~1968~ demonstrate their art in designated “demo” booths where the public is invited to participate, as well as working in their own booths. The lovely eucalyptus grove with its rippling waterfall provides an irresistible background. The Sawdust Art Festival is truly a local event. All artists exhibiting in the festival are residents of Laguna Beach. Unlike some other non-profit organizations dedicated to the arts, the Sawdust Art Festival’s administration is made up of exhibiting members. Each year, exhibiting artists are elected as members of the Board of Directors. In addition, booth locations are determined by an annual lottery, usually held in February. Because the show is non-juried, enthusiastic amateurs display their work along with accomplished veteran artists, providing the spice and variety that

make every show different from the last. In keeping with the spirit of its beginnings, the Sawdust Art Festival intends to be different from other art shows, visualizing itself as an artists’ “happening” rather than a stuffy exhibit. To that end, the artists themselves build a unique village of individual booths from the ground up each summer. The architectural designs are as varied and interesting as the work they showcase. Once the booths are finished, the sawdust goes down, the landscaping goes in, music fills the air and once again the Sawdust Art Festival magically returns for another summer. It is truly a unique experience in the arts that brings visitors back year after year. To g e t m o r e i n f o r m a t i o n on the Sawdust Festival visit: sawdustartfestival.org

Elks ladies July dance theme was Big Band

By: Vicky Long, Publicity Photos by: Mike Klinger Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks. Sentimental Journey, Summertime and the Bunny Hop, the era of the Big Band was the theme for this year’s Elks Ladies July dance. Members and friends danced to the music of the 40’s that was oh so familiar and wonderfully performed by the 18 piece “OC Swing Machine” and vocalist Sarah Baxter, under the direction of Dr. William Nicholls. The Lodge room was beautifully decorated with all things music and lovely centerpieces of feathers designed by Laura Lumley and installed by our volunteers, Pam Mackey, Jack and Sandy Jacobs, Mary Ann and

Camacho Alvarez, Barbara Martino, Patricia Ohman, Diana Wilson, Laura Lumley, Marge Kovash and Barbara King. What would a 40’s themed dance be without a dinner reminiscent of the Delmonico? Steak Diane and Chicken Piccata along with Asparagus with Hollandase was prepared to perfection by our chiefs, Ed Mackey, Dennis Boelts and Kevin Lindley. Our servers for the evening were Elks Ladies board members Laura Lumley, Diana Wilson, Pam Mackey, Barbara King and Vicky Long and our guests were greeted by Sandy Jacobs. The $2000 proceeds of the event benefited the many charities sponsored by the Elks Ladies.

Simple twists to make summer cooking even more sensational From juicy produce to savory grilled meats, summer is the best time for tantalizing taste buds with delicious foods. This year, why not enhance traditional favorites with a few unique twists? These simple updates to classic summer dishes will have everyone raving. Grown-up cheeseburgers If you love to grill, give your cheeseburgers an upgrade. Skip bland processed cheese slices and choose a more flavorful cheese like gorgonzola, which boasts a savory, earthy taste that complements grilled beef perfectly. Look for Salemville Amish Gorgonzola at your local grocer - an award-winning cheese made in small batches by a Wisconsin Amish community. Milk comes from local farmers whose herds are handmilked twice each day to create a rich cheese free of preservatives and other chemicals. Daring desserts When it comes to creating delicious desserts for summertime gatherings, there’s no shortage of options. If you truly want to wow your guests, though, it’s time to think outside the cake box. For example, instead of store-bought popsicles, make your own healthier versions from fresh fruit and juice. Enhance your famous cheesecake recipe with gorgonzola, or use blue cheese in flan for a surprisingly tasty twist. Take your favorite cookie one step further by making cookie pops

- simply insert lollipop sticks into cookies, dip them in melted chocolate and add festive sprinkles as desired. Sweet-savory grilled fruit The season’s bounty of fruit is made even better when it’s grilled for a few minutes to bring out the extra-sweet flavors. For example, cut pears or peaches in half and grill until they’re warm. Another great way to add grilled fruit to your meal is with fruit kabobs - try pineapple, bananas, oranges, plums, apricots and more, grilling them for several minutes on skewers. Serve with a small wedge of Salemville Reserve - an extra-aged Amish blue cheese - for a unique treat that perfectly blends sweet and savory flavors. Deluxe vegetable plates Whether you grow your own or frequent the local farmers market, fresh vegetables are prevalent throughout the country during the summer months. That’s why vegetable plates are ideal for picnics and barbecues - simply cut up your favorite vegetables for a colorful display. Upgrade this summer favorite by adding a dip no one can resist. Skip store-bought varieties and make your own by mixing cottage cheese and crumbled blue cheese. Vegetables are guaranteed to be devoured. Do you have your own favorite way to enhance summer dishes with blue cheese? Enter the How Do You

Blue recipe contest by visiting www. salemville.com, and use hashtag: #HowDoYouBlue. Here are a few recipes that will inspire at your next summer gathering: Cottage Blue Dip & Dressing Ingredients: 1-1/2 cups cream-style small curd cottage cheese 1/3 cup Salemville Amish Blue cheese, crumbled 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 2 teaspoon onion, finely chopped 3 tablespoon cream Paprika for coloring Directions: Beat cottage cheese with an electric mixer until smooth.

Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Serve chilled with vegetables or crackers. Note: For a thinner dip or salad dressing, add more cream. Fig Creme Brulee Ingredients: 1 large black mission fig 1 teaspoon blue cheese 1/2 teaspoon raw sugar Directions: Cut fig in half. Using melon ball scoop or round spoon, remove seeds. Fill with blue cheese. Sprinkle with sugar. Caramelize sugar with torch until it has turned golden brown. Cook’s note: If you do not have a torch, put in the oven under the broiler until golden brown.

GREAT SILENCE FROM LADERA RANCH CIVIC COUNCIL

Jeff Hamilton, Will not seek new term

By: Tamara Bryant, Staff Reporter Ladera Ranch News Civic Council Overview Ladera Ranch residents 18 and above who have lived in the community at least six months and have a desire to help our community grow at the local level are urged to throw their hats into the ring for the fall elections. The Civic Council Chairman says it is “100% volunteer run and passion driven.” Since Ladera Ranch is not an incorporated city, The Ladera Ranch Civic Council is an elected seven-member Board of volunteers that serves a two-year term by advocating on a number of issues that may affect the financial, safety, governance, land use and life quality of the residents in the unincorporated county area of Ladera Ranch. Council members focus on municipal topics within the unincorporated area of Ladera Ranch that are customarily associated with the urban government such as: Planning / Land Use; Public Safety; Public Works and other Municipal related services. The Ladera Ranch Civic Council provides input to organizations that have jurisdiction, The current board says it is encouraging interested members of the community to take part in the annual elections in which four seats are available. Candidate applications can be downloaded at http://lrciviccouncil.org and submitted

to communications@lrciviccounil.org. The current 2015-2016 Council includes Jeff Hamilton, Gary Kephart, Jett McCormick, Todd Stearns and Chairman Scott Weisgerber. Two members ended their terms early for unstated personal reasons; Andrew Bereczky, and Emilie Blum . Jeff Hamilton, who has served on the Civic Council for eight years and is up for reelection, has repeatedly declined requests for interviews by the Ladera Ranch News and has recently indicated that he has decided not to seek another two-year term. Ladera Ranch Residents have the Right to Know The residents of Ladera Ranch are entitled to know the identity, background, and qualifications of each and every member of Ladera Ranch Civic Council, a board which makes important decisions that seriously affect every resident. As the official legally adjudicated newspaper for Ladera Ranch it is the obligation of the Ladera Ranch News to provide that information to our residents. Following the July 18,2016 meeting, the newspaper was told by the council chairman that the minutes of the meeting would be furnished to the newspaper, as had been previously done by the council. However, after no minutes were received, the newspaper printed our own report of the meeting in the July 22nd edition of the Ladera Ranch News.

Page 10

The Ladera Ranch News

BOARD MEMBER RESIGNS TWICE IN TWO WEEKS REFUSING TO DISCLOSE BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICE Newly appointed Civic Council Board member Jennifer Powers abruptly resigned after being asked by the newspaper to provide her personal biography, background and qualifications for office. But reportedly when she heard the newspaper was not doing a background story on her later “withdrew her resignation and agreed to resume her seat on the board.” When she learned that she would again be asked to provide her personal biography, background and qualifications for office This councilmember resigned again, apparently for the same reason. Between the meeting and the July 22nd newspaper report, The Ladera Ranch News made a formal request that the Ladera Ranch Civic Council furnish the newspaper with: A copy of the minutes of the last meeting of the council. An update on whether Jennifer Powers has again reconsidered taking her seat on the board. If not, then The Ladera Ranch News would like to know if the civic council is naming someone else to replace her, and if so, the newspaper is requesting a copy of that person’s application for the appointment. The Ladera Ranch News is requesting a list of names of any and all persons who have applied to be considered for a seat on the board and a copy of their application.

Since this was the second time in two weeks that we have not received either the information requested or any reply explaining why the council is unable or unwilling to provide the information, the newspaper again requested that board chairman respond to indicate if the board is deliberately refusing to respond to our requests or if there is some other reason we have not received the requested information as this directly affects the story on which we are currently working. Ladera Ranch Residents Invited to the Grand Re-Opening of the Cox Sports Park Tomorrow from 10:00a.m. to Noon By Amy R. Spurgeon-Hoffman, Ladera Ranch News Reporter Ladera Ranch residents will celebrate the grand re-opening of the state of the art artificial turf field at Cox Sports Park Ladera Ranch Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon with food, fun and an exhibition soccer game to “Break In The Turf” featuring AYSO 1455’s premier girls under 12 ‘Extra’ competitive soccer team on the brand new ‘green’ field, located at 27623 Crown Valley Parkway, Ladera Ranch. “The new artificial turf field is something all of Ladera Ranch can be proud of – it really looks nice,” said Ladera Ranch’s AYSO Commissioner Mark Verrengia. Verrengia has loyally served as AYSO 1455 Regional Commissioner for five years. This season serves as his last in this position. The recreational and competitive sports program boasts1700 players already for fall play. AYSO 1455 soccer in the fall is a community pastime here in Ladera Ranch. The previous artificial turf field at Cox was just shy of hitting it’s nearly decade long run as the “workhorse” 365-day a year go-to lighted soccer field in Ladera Ranch for youth and adult soccer players alike who lace up year-round as part of the 13 million Americans who play the third most played team sport in the U.S. – just behind basketball and baseball. Local dignitaries will participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony that begins at 10 a.m. at the field. Food and business vendors will also be on hand to make it a memorable festive community event. The first official new-turf game kicks off at 11 a.m. MAKING THE CASE FOR A NEW FIELD TO LADERA RANCH’S HOA “A special recognition and thank you goes out to Ladera Ranch resident Gary Ulrich for being the brave soul who went before LARMAC and convinced them that the field needed to be replaced ahead of schedule,” said Verrengia. “Thank you Gary Ulrich for making it all happen,And thank you to our AYSO friend and esteemed LARMAC Board Member Jeff Hamilton for his work on the field replacement and sideline improvements,” Verrengia said. Verrengia said the old turf clearly needed repairs. seams were coming apart, the field was becoming ‘hard’ causing the ball to move faster and knee injuries more common for players. The new field uses the latest in technology that keeps the rubber

turf cooler than the last field, which could rise upwards of 30 degrees on hot days. The field closed from June to July in order for the new field to be put down. In addition to a new turf, bleachers with shade for the players, referees and spectators were also added to the field. Future enhancements at Cox artificial turf field includes restrooms that will be nearby the adjacent playground used year round by many Ladera Ranch residents. AYSO 1455: NEW UNIFORMS AND POSSIBLY THE FIRST EVER ‘LADERA CUP’ A m e r i c a n Yo u t h S o c c e r Org a n i z a t i o n (AYSO ) s t a n d s for: Everyone Plays®, Balanced Teams, Open Registration, Positive Coaching, Good Sportsmanship and Player Development, a c c o r d i n g t o w w w. a y s o . o r g . Verrengia has been a visionary leader for AYSO 1455 for the past five years and he hopes changes for the 2016-2017 soccer season will bring even more excitement for the sport by anyone in Ladera Ranch wishing to participate. Verrengia says Xara Soccer will be unveiling new uniforms this year for players based on national and international soccer teams – hoping to inspire young athletes to learn more about teams around the world they will be representing here at home on a local level. “Xara Soccer has created a whole new uniform line for AYSO – starting with our region,” Verrengia said. “We love soccer here. We want our players to have replica uniforms [from around the world] and be able to follow their teams on television.” “If a child for AYSO 1455 wears a Team USA jersey, and they see Team USA playing professionally, that provides them with a role model and a sense of pride,” said Verrengia. “The parents can get in on it. Everyone can learn about ‘their’ team together. From the jerseys, to the banners. It’s a source of pride.” LOOKING TO START THE FIRST EVER LADERA CUP SOCCER DAY Step one is introducing the region to the replica uniforms. Step two will be a hometown day of soccer called the “Ladera Cup” – where players, families and friends can participate in a welcoming ceremony parade with Country Flags, spend the day picnicking and watching our ‘world’ teams play soccer right here on the Ranch. “My vision is how do we make

This field is the “workhorse” soccer field in Ladera Ranch, operating almost 365-days a year to youth and adult soccer players. New to the field are shaded spectator, player and referee bleachers.

Ladera Ranch soccer even bigger. It will be our community version of the ‘World Cup’,” said Verrengia. “I think it would be fantastic to have all these kids lining up and carrying their ‘Country’ banner, sharing international foods and fellowship.”Verrengia said he hopes to make the ‘Ladera Cup’ a reality possibly this year. “Just a day to picnic in the park and play soccer,” said Verrengia. “Live out your dream of playing in the ‘World Cup’ right here in

Ladera Ranch.”AYSO 1455 offers recreational programs for fall, winter and spring; as well as competitive leagues and a VIP Soccer Program in the ‘Unlimited’ division specifically designed to provide a soccer program for players with special mental and physical challenges, according to http://www.laderasoccer.com/. The Wooden Floor’s Concert Raises $392,000 for Youth Development Programs Photos by Ann Chatillon It was an exciting evening as 200 guests arrived for the Opening Night Reception for The Wooden Floor, an arts-based youth development nonprofit, for the 33rd Annual Concert: You. Me. We. at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. The opening night performance - a staple of Orange County’s dance calendar - features a unique and invaluable collaboration between nearly 150 under-served youth and three of the nation’s top contemporary dance choreographers: Bessie Award-winner Karinne Keithley Syers, McKnight Fellow and Sage Award recipient, Chris Yon, and Artistic Director and Co-CEO of The Wooden Floor, Melanie Ríos Glaser. Underwriting for this year’s Annual Concert raised $392,000 for the organization and its successful year-round dance, college and career readiness, and family service programs for 375 economically disadvantaged youth. Opening Night Reception guests were welcomed by Chairman of the Board of Directors James A. Driscoll, who thanked attendees for their steadfast support of the organization. Executive Director and Co-CEO Dawn S. Reese outlined how the organization’s model will be used to impact more young people in low-income communities through the power of dance and access to higher education. Additionally, Artistic Director and Co-CEO Melanie Ríos Glaser expressed the character-building aspects of the concert performances, which lead to creative expression, self-confidence and personal discovery. She was followed by two touching stories of student success, shared by 11- year-old Victoria Ocampo (Class of 2022) and high school sophomore Adrian Delgado (Class of 2018), who won over the audience with their personal accounts of how The Wooden Floor and its supporters have made a difference in their lives The reception was followed by a performance unlike any collaboration of its kind. Three world premieres and a reworking of a previous piece were unveiled, showcasing progressive, contemporary dance works performed by almost 150 under-served youth working alongside a dream team of the nation’s top artists, designers, and choreographers. The beautiful and thought-provoking performances were lit by prolific lighting designer James F. Ingalls, of Metropolitan Opera and Lincoln Center acclaim, complimented with costumes by Jennifer Vaughan, known for her work in past Olympic Games. Nearly 2,300 tickets were sold for the Annual Concert’s four performances. The Wooden Floor, founded in 1983, is a Santa Ana arts-based organization that delivers hope and opportunity to 375 low-income youth annually. Dance education and performance are the core transformational elements through which youth change the way they think about themselves and aspire beyond the grip of the poverty cycle. In the dance studio, rigorous training, creativity, and self-knowledge lead to confidence, leadership, teamwork, well-being, and joy. Academic programs, college and career readiness, and college scholarships ensure that students succeed in school and are college-ready. Since 2005, 100 percent of graduates from The Wooden Floor have enrolled in college, which is more than double the national average for their socioeconomic peers. Family Services at The Wooden Floor, including counseling, crisis intervention, and social service referrals help families overcome hardships and navigate challenges. Community support enables these year-round programs to be offered free of charge. Bringing about generational change to break the cycle of poverty in our community is the long-term goal of The Wooden Floor. For more information visit www. thewoodenfloor.org. Page 12

Rising temperatures are a doubleedged sword for pet lovers. Warmer days create the perfect setting for a run through the park or a game of fetch. But these warm days also provide an ideal environment for pests that can have a serious impact on your pet’s health. Tiny but mighty Both fleas and ticks are small but dangerous. Fleas are ravenous and can consume 15 times their own body weight in your pet’s blood. A serious infestation can cause your pet to become anemic. It is common for pets to have sensitivity to flea saliva and just one bite can cause a severe allergic reaction, leading to painful and intense itching. Fleas also transmit a variety of diseases such as bartonella and typhus, as well as tapeworms. Female ticks can consume more than 100 times their body weight in your dog’s blood, which can lead to anemia. Their bites may trigger allergic reactions, but even more dangerous are the diseases they can transmit, such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which can also be transmitted to humans. Treat and prevent pests The best way to protect your pet and your family is to manage exposure to pests and take preventive measures to keep them at bay. Page 14

Protecting against infestations When you see fleas or ticks on your pet, there is a good chance that they are in your home as well. Simply treating your pet won’t rid the problem entirely, because you risk re-infestation until pests are fully eradicated. Household sprays, carpet powders and foggers kill fleas nesting in the home. Thoroughly vacuum and wash any carpeting, furniture or linens, including beds and pillows that your pet may have come into contact with. Although you won’t be able to control the outdoor environment as easily as the home, you should also treat your yard so that pests aren’t reintroduced every time your dog or cat ventures outside. Prevent fleas and ticks from jumping onto pets when outside by spraying the yard and treating around the home’s foundation to kill any potential flea populations. In addition to using a pet-safe insect repellant, cut down tall brush and grasses near the house or pet runs to reduce a pet’s exposure to fleas and ticks. Learn more about the health risks associated with fleas and ticks, and find additional prevention tips, at www.petarmor.com. How to Check for Fleas and Ticks Adult ticks are often visible to the naked eye, so you may be able to

The Ladera Ranch News

spot them on short-haired pets. But with longer haired pets, it’s best to do a thorough inspection with a finetoothed comb. Signs your pet may have fleas can include flea dirt (small dark flakes), excessive itching or scratching, redness and inflammation, hot spots and pale gums. You may also see adult fleas on your pet’s coat and skin. Follow this advice from the experts at PetArmor to find and eliminate fleas and ticks on your pet: First, use a fine-toothed metal flea comb. Run the comb along your pet’s back or underbelly, making sure the comb comes in contact with the skin. If you pull out any fleas or ticks, immediately drown them in a nearby bowl of soapy water. Have your pet stand on a white sheet or towel. Then brush or rub your pet’s coat. Small black specks on the white sheet or towel are more than likely fleas or flea dirt. Flea dirt can also look like sand. Apply a monthly topical preventive treatment such as PetArmor Plus to keep pests from coming back. Also be sure to treat your home and yard to prevent a recurrence. Choosing a preventive treatment No two pets are the same, so it’s a good idea to consult with your veterinarian before you begin a flea and tick preventive program. Some

questions to keep in mind as you’re determining the best treatment for your pet include: Is a topical or oral treatment most appropriate for my pet? How costly is the treatment? Can I get the treatment from a retailer over the counter, or is it available only through the veterinary office? Does it kill eggs and larvae to prevent the re-infestation cycle? How quickly does it begin working and how long will it last? Is it waterproof? Is it safe for breeding, pregnant and lactating animals? Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Scooter is as sweet as can be

Dogs don’t get much sweeter than Scooter, a 10-year old Manchester terrier. In fact, he’s as sweet as they come. Although he is considered a “senior” dog, Scooter certainly does not act like one. He is still active, peppy and full of life. He enjoys his walks but also loves to cuddle and be doted on. Since he is more mature, he won’t have as many training issues as a younger dog. He would make a wonderful companion for almost anyone but would be perfect for Page 16

a retired person or couple. He is also part of the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center’s Mature Pet Program, so his adoption fee is discounted by $50 to an approved applicant. Scooter still has a lot of life to live, so please consider sharing your life with this special dog. The Mission Viejo Animal Services Center is at 28095 Hillcrest. Families sought to foster adorable kittens

The Mission Viejo Animal Services Center is seeking families to foster kittens in loving homes until they are ready to be adopted into permeant homes. Kittens arrive at the center as young as a day or two old – requiring bottle feeding – up to 7 weeks old, when they need a place to play and be cuddled until big enough to return to the shelter for adoption. Foster caregivers must have an extra room in their home that is not in constant use. While tiny kittens require little space (generally a bathroom is big enough), larger kittens

need room to run, play and continue proper development, so they make great pets. The Mission Viejo Animal Services Center provides foster families with food, dishes, litter pans, beds, a carrier and toys. Children can help foster kittens, too. Depending on a child’s age, he or she can earn community service hours for pitching in. For more information, call 949-4703045 or drop by the center at 28095 Hillcrest to fill out a foster application. Information about the center is also available at http://www.cmvas.org.

Help men reclaim space of their own: Bathroom sharing tips Most couples acknowledge that women get the majority of space in the bathroom. In fact, men claim that just one-third of the bathroom is set aside for their things, according to the 2014 U.S. Dove Men+Care Hair Survey, and they often reach for items that belong to their partner, instead of products made for them. Dove Men+Care, which offers hair care products made specifically for men, has partnered with wellknown home improvement duo, Mark and Theresa Clement, to help men reclaim a bathroom space of their own. The Clements, who are spacemaximizing pros through their own personal experiences and frequent client requests, dole out some helpful tips for sharing a bathroom with your partner: * Mark suggests, “Even before you start organizing your space, talk about what you’re looking for! Do you like the top shelf-or do you prefer the bottom? Are you frustrated by open shampoo tops or soap left on the shower floor? Speak up! It can be helpful to organize your space together.” * Try to keep in mind that sharing space is all about compromise. Some need more cabinet space while others need more space in the shower. Theresa advises, “Try to be flexible with your partner’s requests! I love Page 18

having my products easily accessible, but I know Mark does, too. Do your best to divide space according to your needs and always respect your partner’s space.” * Play with boundaries. Creating structure will remind you which area is yours...and which belongs to your partner. The Clements love “his-andhers” shelves or shower caddies and also recommend customized drawers or cabinet space if you’re looking to invest in your home. * Stock products for both of you. About nine in 10 men have borrowed their partners’ products, according to the 2014 U.S. Dove Men+Care Hair Survey, but many women wish they didn’t. To stop the cycle, find a product he likes, such as Aqua Impact Shampoo from Dove Men+Care Hairand keep using your favorites! * While you may not have an eye for decor like Theresa, putting your own stamp on the area is important. “Don’t forget about decorations,” she says. “Moving in together means creating a space for his and her tastes. Explore the colors and themes each of you prefers and find a way to combine the two for a unique style.” Jumpstart your way to a happy bathroom, with the full range of Dove Men+Care products, and these great tips from Mark & Theresa. -(BPT)
