Laguna Dance Festival: contemporary cool from coast to coast The September 21-25 Laguna Dance Festival will bring to the intimate stage three world-renowned dance companies, New York-based Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion, Philadelphia’s BalletX and Los Angeles’ BODYTRAFFIC, audience talks with the directors, free public performances, and four master classes. Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion will perform on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at The Laguna Playhouse. Both performances will be followed by a post-performance conversation with Kyle Abraham, 2013 MacArthur “genius grant” winner. Abraham’s thought-provoking “Pavement,” called “a work of great subtlety and beauty” by The New Yorker, is a meditation on the 1991 film Boyz N The Hood as well as W.E.B. DuBois’ 1903 book The Souls of Black Folk. With his full-length, 55-minute piece, Abraham examines the history that led to the conflict represented in the movie, and finds relevance in the Du Bois essays, which were influential in AfricanAmericans’ struggle for equality in the twentieth century. The dance is set on a basketball court in the historically black Pittsburgh neighborhoods where Abraham grew up, and the eclectic soundtrack includes 23 names, from Baroque selections by Bach and Vivaldi to Sam Cooke vocals and rap. Washington Post reviewer Sarah Kaufman wrote, “Beautiful and severely honest..(but)
despite its name and subject matter, ‘Pavement’ is not all hard edges. It delivers a sharp sense of reality with extraordinary softness, in dancing that is lush and seductive.” With the company’s performances described as “solid from beginning to end” (New York Amsterdam News) and “effortless-seeming smoothness and grace” (Los Angeles Times), A.I.M.’s premiére performance in Orange County is certain to garner attention and initiate conversation. BalletX will return to the Laguna Beach stage to present its entertaining, diverse choreographic style in a shared bill with BODYTRAFFIC on Saturday, Sept. 24 and a full-length show on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 3 p.m. with a pre-show talk at 2 p.m. Committed to producing new works that cultivate in audiences a collective appetite for bold, new dance, BalletX was founded in 2005 by Christine Cox and Matthew Neenan. Now under the direction of Cox as artistic and executive director, BalletX challenges the boundaries of classical ballet by encouraging formal experimentation while preserving rigorous technique. BalletX’s dances “have suspense, vitality, comedy, freedom,” according to the New York Times. The company “…creates a coherent, poetic realm of the imagination.” Its performances are “a feast of music and dance,” noted the Philadelphia Inquirer, and “remarkably moving.” BODYTRAFFIC, a Laguna Dance Festival audience favorite, will head down the freeway from Los Angeles for
a Saturday, Sept. 24 performance at 7:30 p.m. in a combined program with BalletX. In addition, BODYTRAFFIC dancers will present a master class at Laguna Beach High School at 10 a.m. the same day. Founded in 2007 by Lillian Barbeito and Tina Finkelman Berkett, the company has surged to the forefront of the concert dance world and is helping to establish Los Angeles as a major center for contemporary dance. “BODYTRAFFIC suggests invention, attitude, and urban edge,” wrote Karen Campbell in the Boston Globe. In the Los Angeles Times, Laura Bleiberg called it “one of the most talked-about young companies, not just in L.A. but nationwide.” Festival founder and artistic director Jodie Gates commented, “The companies selected for this fall’s festival hail from three uniquely American cities – Kyle Abraham from New York by way of his
hometown of Pittsburgh, BalletX out of Philadelphia, and BODYTRAFFIC from Los Angeles. Presented over four days, these companies offer audiences a dazzling representation of the current freshness, depth, and breadth of contemporary American dance.” The four onstage performances by these three extraordinary companies will be presented at the 420-seat Laguna Playhouse, 606 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach. Ticket prices are: general admission $60, students with ID $35. The three master classes will be held at two locations. Master class costs are $25 per student; $15 observer; student package of a master class and performance: $50. Update Aug. 30: All master classes are sold out. Performance tickets are on sale now at the Laguna Playhouse box office and at www.lagunadancefestival.org.

Mission Viejo/Saddleback Valley Elks Party in the Park with Over 270 Residents of Orange County Rescue Mission Because of the $2500 ENF Promise Grant the Elks Lodge was able to provide a full day of fun, food, prizes, treats, and many basic items that the kids desperately need for the upcoming school year as The Mission Viejo/Saddleback Valley Elks 2444 held the third annual Party in the Park with the 270+ residents of the Orange County Rescue Mission Shelter. There are more than 100 kids that are also residents at the Mission who had a great time playing games, having their faces painted and burning calories in the bounce house/slide. The children all fell in love at the puppy petting zoo. Around 30 Elk members and friends joined together to make their day the best it could be – The Elks fed them cotton candy and snow cones and played games with them in the park assuring every child (and most of the adults) were loaded up with candy, toys and prizes, school and stationary supplies, and lots of donated clothing and gift bags thanks to Stephanie Bongartz
Elks Judy Klinger and Leading Knight Mike Long dish up the lunch and Bongo Ink. Bill Bongartz led the kitchen crew to feed a very hungry group hot dogs and hamburgers which is a real treat to the residents. every one of them showed the utmost
respect and appreciation to the Elks team as they went through the buffet style lines. The Lodge in conjunction with Elks National Foundation put this event together with the help of Lodge
members and friends.. Past Exalted Ruler Derek Randles and Past Elk of the Year Stephanie Bongartz started this program three years ago and it just keeps getting better.
La Paws Park sculpture memorializing the heroes of 9/11 The R. Hero sculpture at La Paws Park is now adorned with a special ribbon paying homage to the heroes of the terrorist attacks on 9/11. The ribbon is from the Hero In You Foundation, which has sent the customized ribbon decal to fire stations, museums and libraries that house R. Hero sculptures in honor of the 15th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. “We asked our locations to display the ribbon on the sculpture throughout the month of September to pay tribute to the fallen heroes and their families,” said Nathan Rillo of the foundation. The 6-foot high, 150-pound purple R. Hero Dalmatian aluminum sculpture has sat at the entrance to La Paws Park since 2014. The sculpture was a donation from Bunni and Rick Benaron as part of The Hero In You Foundation, which honors first responders and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices firefighters, police officers, paramedics and military service personnel make, while inspiring future generations to become heroes. The City of Mission Viejo is home to one of 20 unique R.Hero sculptures across the country. Page 4

Many parents prefer packing their kids’ school lunches for a number of reasons, from cost savings to the confidence of having better control over what their children eat. But packing the same-old, same-old every day can get tired fast - for both parent and child. By adding a dollop of creativity to packed lunches, parents can ensure they serve something kids will enjoy throughout the school year. “Packed lunches are a great option for families that want to emphasize positive eating habits while controlling costs,” says Lorraine Hale, category director of new Sara Lee Snack Cakes. “Any parent can tell you, however, that it can be a challenge to come up with five different menus every week throughout the school year. Kids are much more likely to
eat a lunch that offers a variety of fun and balanced options!” Here are some ideas for creating appealing, balanced lunches parents will feel good about and kids will want to eat: * Beverages - Replace sugar-filled regular soda and fruit juices with healthier beverages. Water is simply the best calorie-free, high-hydration beverage, so use it in place of sports drinks or even diet soda. Flavored waters can tickle the taste buds of the pickiest drinkers, without adding calories or sugar. And never pack so-called “energy drinks” in a child’s lunch; many are high in sugar and caffeine, and some school districts have banned them altogether. * Sandwich bread - There are so many great choices for sandwich making, and whole wheat bread can be part of a nutritious lunch. Get creative incorporating whole grain into your child’s lunch, including breads made from different types of whole grains like oats and barley. * Sides - Sure, you would love it if your kids munched on fresh cut veggies at lunchtime, but it’s the rare child that has such a refined palate. Most kids would prefer a bag of chips. Want to combine both competing desires? Veggie chips can be a fun, yummy occasional side that kids love. Veggie chips take the chip
concept to the next level with enticing colors and flavors, and the crunch that kids love. As a bonus, the chips can be a great way to introduce kids to new vegetables they might not otherwise try like yucca, parsnips and turnips. * There’s room for dessert - in moderation, like everything else - and a little something sweet can help kids get through the day, either as a sweet ending to lunch or an afternoon snack during the homework crunch. Individually wrapped options like new freshly baked Sara Lee Snack Cakes, from the iconic American brand, make it easy to give kids a perfectly portioned pat on the back for their hard work throughout the school day. Each box of Devil’s Food Crème Cakes, Golden Fudge Cakes and Crumb Cakes contains six or eight individually wrapped cakes, making them easy to include in packed lunches. Visit www.Facebook.com/SaraLeeSnacks to learn more. Finally, think beyond the brown bag; insulated bags are reusable and available in appealing patterns and trendy colors and can help keep lunches at safe temperatures all morning. Be sure to wash out these reusable bags every day, and clean ice packs thoroughly before refreezing them. - (BPT)

W i ll S i m p s o n a n d T h e D u d e a r e D y n a m i t e in the Markel Insurance 1.40m Grand Prix Mavis Spencer and Disco Lady Top the Interactive Mortgage U25 The $25,000 Markel Insurance 1.40m Grand Prix in Del Mar was truly tremendous sport. Some superb horse and rider pairs came to compete, 52 in total, with veteran pair Will Simpson and The Dude (Nicole Walker, owner) taking the win in a 14 horse jump-off. Californian native Mavis Spencer rode Disco Lady (owned by Neil Jones Equestrian) to the win in the Interactive Mortgage U25 qualifier. Having lived and worked in Europe for several years and on the East Coast for a few years as well, Spencer hasn’t competed in California since 2008. The popularity of this class as a way to move young grand prix horses up, a chance for U25 riders to compete with veteran show jumpers and a warm-up for many of those competing in the weekend grand prix, also makes it a challenge for the course designer. With a large group of entries varying in experience, the track needs to be both inviting and technical. FEI Course Designer Catsy Cruz (MEX) explained her strategy. “It offers a little bit of everything - I tried to use the material, to use the ring, and used specific questions to try to make it interesting and make it a challenging class.” Asking horses to stretch in longer lines and also shorten, plus using a skinny vertical early in the course, a liverpool, combinations, planks as well as a tight time allowed, Cruz created a track that demanded a plan. “It’s all related, you have to ride with rhythm and in coordination with your horse. The speed as posted for the class is a much more ‘going forward’ speed. So if you don’t keep
on the rhythm, then time is a factor, too. Hopefully we’ll have a good class with about ten or so clean.” The first of the 14 horse and rider combinations to jump-off set quite a precedent: Mavis Spencer and her horse Cornetiero flew through the shortened course in a fault-free time of 40.71 that was not able to be caught by the following 11 horses. Spencer’s effort held the lead through four double-clear trips, including Nicole Haunert riding NJK No Regret, Laura Hite on Solos Consept, Christian Heineking aboard AJE Cluny, and Tina Yates on Highpoint Farm, LLC’s Bowmore VDL. Thirteenth to jump off, Will Simpson strode into the ring on Nicole Walker’s The Dude. Simpson’s bold decisions, in conjunction with The Dude’s large stride and impressive scope, enabled him to perfect a hairpin turn back to fence 6B while still maintaining his prompt pace. “He laid down a real tight turn [to fence 6B] and then jumped across the plank [7], and he was already headed towards the next jump. We really took a risk there but he was still a foot and half over the jump. So he was just incredible. He’s ten years old and really coming into his own,” Simpson said of The Dude. Simpson’s eye was at work immediately after landing from fence 9 - he chose a big stride for a big distance into the combination. His confidence placed The Dude in a strong position for the oxer at the A element, but required some careful backing up at the B element. Like Simpson said, though, The Dude “came to play today in Del Mar.” The pair whizzed through the timers in unbeatable 38.92.

Will Simpson and The Dude, with Melissa Brandes of Blenheim EquiSports and Brandon Seger of Markel Insurance “He’s an unbelievable, capable Belgium, and together they decided to horse that can do just about anything,” open up a location in North America. Simpson beamed. “I brought six horses out here with The 2008 Team Gold Olympic me, and we figured, we don’t really Medalist continued. “This sport is so get the chance to jump on the grass rewarding - even on a day like today where we are for the rest of the - to have a horse that can go and lay year, so it’s nice to come here with a down a trip like that. I’m on cloud nine different environment, and different right now. I’ve been doing this a long footing. And obviously the horses time and it is still as exciting as when really like it!” I first started.” Regarding her second place ride Simpson is staying on the West on Cornetiero, Spencer said, “He is Coast this fall, planning to compete very good in speed phases - he has in the North American League World a lot of experience doing them. I feel Cup Qualifiers. He and The Dude really comfortable on him, so Neil will return to the grand prix field on said, ‘You’re going first, you have Saturday for the $50,000 Showpark nothing to lose, take a shot at it.’ All Seasons Grand Prix. Everything worked out, and with 14 in Mavis Spencer and Disco Lady Top the jump-off and then being second the Interactive Mortgage U25 to Will Simpson, it’s not a bad day at The Interactive Mortgage U25 the office.” Qualifier hosted eleven entries, with Both the Markel Insurance 1.40m two riders going clean. Segerstrom Center for the Arts Kicks off Season with Tour de Force III Yvette Pergola with Maxim Zyuzin and Dorcas Preston
Photos by Doug Gifford Segerstrom Center for the Arts kicked off its 30th anniversary celebrations with a spectacular evening a dance: Tour de Force III. Dance has been the Center’s artistic signature since opening night, September 29, 1986. The annual Dance Series has brought international recognition to the Center and Orange County with nearly every major dance and ballet company in the world coming to Orange County via the Center. Tour de Force III was a one-night-only extravaganza – just four pieces, but each one a West Coast premiere. Undoubtedly, and with all respects to the other dancers and choreographers, the big news was the West Coast debut of current leading of all leading male dancers, Sergei Polunin. Due to visa problems with another lead dancer, a work had to be replaced. Substituted was a peek at part of dramatic new work titled Silent Echoes, being created by Russell Maliphant for Natalia Osipova and Polunin and that will have its full world premiere in New York later this year. Was it a coup d’théâtre? It was for Segerstrom Center! Osipova is arguably the leading ballerina dancing today. She has appeared at the Elizabeth Segerstrom and Betty Kay Fukunaga and Marcelo Center many times for Orange County’s balletomanes, and she was glorious. Huang Gomes Polunin is undeniably a superstar, often said to be the new Rudolph Nureyev. Ballet is not followed as closely in the United States as in Europe. So in the ballet world and Europe, Polunin is a rock star. He did not disappoint, and it was, indeed, a spectacular, historic evening of glorious dance with which to celebrate Segerstrom Center’s dance. After the final curtain, the cast – including Osipova and Polunin, Viktoria Briyova of the Mariinsky Ballet, ABT’s great Marcelo Gomes, who, with Joaquin de Luz, Denis Matvienko and Friedemann Vogel, performed his own work, Tristesse, and Philipp Stepin and Soslan Kulaev – attended the postperformance party at Mastro’s. Choreographers Vladimir Varnava and Maxim Petrov, who choreographed the other two works, Clay and Le Divertissement du Roi respectively, were there. Other cast members gathered from around the world for Tour de Force III were dancers from London’s Royal Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet and National Ballet of Canada. South Coast Plaza hosted the party, the menu included roasted tomato bruschetta, ahi tartare on crispy wontons, mini crab cakes with spicy remoulade, shrimp ceviche, prime rib sliders with caramelized onions, Walter and Lana Parsadayan with Peter Spenuzza horseradish cream, French fries, Mastro’s signature butter cake and Chocolate Sin Cake. On hand were Center President Terry Dwyer and his wife Amy, Center Executive Vice President Judy Morr, the impresaria for the Center’s dance series, Elizabeth Segerstrom, and Sergei and Giane Danilian of Ardani Artists. The Center and Ardani co-produced Tour de Force III. S.L. Huang, wife of Center Board Member Betty Huang, was celebrating his birthday. Also on the guest list were Pacific Chorale Board Chairman Mary Lyon, Center Board Member Deborah Bridges and husband Larry, Marina and Michael Samen (whose daughter is a student in the ABT William J. Gillespie School at the Center) and Lana and Walter Parsadayan. Back to Polunin for a moment, he was in Los Angeles the following week for the opening of his new film biography, Dancer. Polunin’s Take Me To the Church YouTube video has had nearly 16 million viewings. Take a look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-tW0CkvdDI/. Hopefully he’ll be back to the Center soon! Santa Margarita Too Much for Westlake to Handle The Eagles avenged last year’s loss to Westlake in commanding fashion, defeating the Warriors by a score of 49-8
Junior Chad Magyar eludes Westlake tacklers and scores his first touchdown of the night By: Sean Zeitler Photos by: Steve Wylie The Eagles laid a lot of groundwork last Friday night when they beat Westlake High School, 49-8. Pun intended. Santa Margarita kept it on the ground as they would rush for 257 yards and scored all seven of their touchdowns via the run game. Rushing by committee, eight Eagles helped contribute to their 35 carries on the night including junior Chad Magyar who scored two first half touchdowns and finished his evening with five carries for 58 yards. Senior quarterback Richard Wagner rushed three times for 36 yards, two of which went for touchdowns as well. Wagner was economical in the passing game, completing 13 of 16 passes (81%) for 132 yards. The Eagles would outscore the Warriors 42-0 going into the half, 28 in the second quarter alone, which would necessitate a running clock for the second half of the game. Getting in on the scoring action was senior running back Trey Green, who rushed for 21 yards on four carries with a touchdown, Oklahoma-bound senior Grant Calcaterra carried the ball once for 23 yards for a touchdown, and sophomore Kyle Hastings saw his first varsity action and made the best of it, carrying the ball three times for 15 yards and a score. Sophomore quarterback Brenden Costello saw plenty of action in the second half and gave Westlake’s defense issues, as he would tack on 61 rushing yards on six carries. With the run game firing on all cylinders, the passing game wasn’t crucial, but Wagner did his part to distribute the rock. Calcaterra would
haul in five passes for 58 yards, Magyar had three catches for 24 yards, Mark Eaton caught two passes for 21 yards, Green had two catches for 18 yards, and Giulio Pozzuoli had a catch for 11 yards. The Warrior’s offense never found a rhythm due to a swarming Eagle defense. Westlake was held scoreless well into the fourth quarter before the Eagles gave up a touchdown and a two point conversion late in the game. Junior defensive tackle Alex Kilander made his presence felt all night, as he led all Eagles with six total tackles including a sack that was good for a 13 yard loss. Junior cornerback Jordan Tollner recorded his first career varsity interception, kicker Dylan Brady was seven for seven on PAT’s and recorded four touchbacks on eight kickoffs. Offensively, the Eagles are now averaging 199.8 rushing yards, 219.3 passing yards, and 419 total yards per game. Defensively, they are averaging 58 tackles and two sacks per game. Santa Margarita (3-1) have now rattled off three wins in a row as they head into their matchup with MLK High School. The Wolves (1-2) are averaging 12.7 points per game and Santa Margarita are averaging 38.8 points per game. In their three game winning streak, the Eagles have scored 134 points and have kept their opponents to just 50, 35 of which came from Alemany High School alone. This high powered offense is now turning heads, as Santa Margarita find themselves ranked #14 in this week’s High School Football America Southern California Top 25.

What Measure M means to Ladera Ladera Ranch News CAPISTRANO UNIFIED SCHOOL Residents is a triple tax regular DISTRICT MEMBER JIM REARDON property tax, Mello-Roos or Measure DENOUNCES MEASURE M AT A tax, Measure M tax. It is highly likely LADERA RANCH CIVIC COUNCIL that the newer schools of Ladera Ranch will receive none of this MEETING. The September 19th Ladera Ranch money. The older schools will receive Civic Council meeting consisted most of the money because the State mostly of a compelling argument given of California may or may not match by Jim Reardon of the Capistrano a percentage of money but the State Unified School District, Area 2, will only match money for the oldest opposing Measure M. Measure M is schools in the District. Measure M gives the CUSD an $889 million bond/tax proposed entirely too much spending power by the CUSD. TO M OR NOT TO M by Jim with virtually no oversight. The Board Reardon of the Capistrano Unified determines when the bonds are sold and could issue them anytime or wait School District “M” is Measure M, an $889 million twenty or more years to issue the last bond/tax proposed by the Capistrano bond - making this a forever tax. CUSD could vote to spend all the Unified School District (CUSD) in an effort to get something on the ballet bonds in two to three cities or just at the last minute. How much thought one city. scope, final size and location, timing, prioritization or other facets of project implementation will be made solely by the Board of Trustees. Measure M is a broad tax on secured and unsecured property including homes, commercial property, mobile homes, boats, airplanes, improvements on real estate, and business property fixtures like commercial ovens. Measure M is estimated to cost in excess of $1.8 billion. This is one of the largest bonds to ever be on the Orange County ballot. The South Orange County Economic Coalition (SOCEC) strongly opposes Measure M. “We’d be more supportive of a smaller, more realistic bond that allows the District to leverage State matching funds and address the most critical facilities improvements,” stated Brown of the SOCEC. “But $1.8 billion is not an appropriate ask of this community nor do we believe it’s all needed at this time. So we urge voters to reject this measure and have the District come back with a more appropriate proposal.” There’s no locality to Measure M. The older school areas who aren’t already paying a Mello-Roos tax will love it. The newer school areas who will be paying the highest overall taxes while not benefiting from Measure M will obviously hate it. “It’s a question of fairness,” stated Reardon. COUNCIL MEMBERS DEBATE COST OF MAILBOX There was extensive discussion over the Ladera Ranch Civic Council’s PO box. Apparently, some of the members who attended a private “working” meeting and decided it would be best to eliminate the PO box which costs the Board $180 per year. Jett McCormick opposed this decision but was out-voted 3-2 (Todd Stearns also opposed it). McCormick pointed out that it is against the bylaws of the Civic Council to make any such decisions in private “working” meetings. He proposed the Board let the new members make this
decision since two of the three members who voted for it are now off the Board. The three members who voted to eliminate the PO box pointed out that the new Board can easily reverse this decision at the next meeting. It is well to note that the State and County still primarily use “snail mail” in formal communications. STREET SLURRY COMPLETIONS The majority of the street work in Ladera Ranch has been completed. 37% of the streets in Ladera Ranch are private and will not be slurried, except the private streets in Covenant Hills. FIRE RESPONSE PLAN PROPOSED Finally, after the recent fire in the hills around Ladera, the need for a community-wide response plan was noted by Scott Weisgerber. The Council says it will be forming a committee (in which the departing member Scott Weisgerber is scheduled to participate) to work with the local pre-schools, schools and county agencies to ensure the safety of our community is our first priority. The Board said that details on this initiative will be forthcoming PROBABLE NEW BOARD MEMBERS Another item of discussion was the departure of members Scott Weisgerber and Jeff Hamilton. Jett McCormick was re-elected for his fifth two-year term. It was not disclosed whether the two presumptive new members, Amir Arbabi and Michael Ellzey, were elected or appointed by current board members, both of whom who were not present at this meeting, will be presumably be sworn in to the Board at the October 17th meeting. TWO APPLICANTS FOR OPEN SEATS AMIR ARBABI Arbabi resides in Ladera with his wife Deborah and his two young children. MICHAEL ELLZEY Ellzey has lived in Ladera Ranch since 2008.
