Newport News is an independent weekly newspaper published every Friday. We are not owned or operated by any of the big daily newspapers. The views and opinions expressed are those of the publisher and not any organization. No reproduction, in whole or in part is permitted without the express written permission of Newport News. Legal Advertising: The Newport News was adjudicated by the Orange County Superior Court as a newspaper of general circulation pursuant to Government Code 6000 case #A187752 on July 15, 1997 and as such is the appropriate newspaper to place legal and public notices for the South Orange County Judicial District including Balboa, Newport Coast, Corona del Mar and the City of Newport Beach, California.
The Orange County Great Park Corporation today announced it is moving forward with a 30-acre expansion of the Great Park. USS Cal Builders, Inc., headquartered in Stanton, Calif. was selected in a public bid process and awarded the $22.8 million contract for construction. The funds for the completion of the Western Sector Park Development Plan are part of the $200 million in developer fees the City of Irvine received under the original agreement with Lennar in 2005 (developer is now FivePoint Communities, Inc.) and appropriated in the FY 2012-2013 budget. Construction is expected to begin this summer and to be completed in mid-to-late 2013. “We are excited to move forward with the next phase of the Great Park and deliver 30 additional acres of exciting features including our first sports fields,” said Beth Krom, Chair, Orange County Great Park Corporation. “The new features will offer something for visitors of every age. Sports and fitness enthusiasts, history buffs and gardeners will all have something new to enjoy at the Great Park.” The expansion will include the following components: South Lawn: The South Lawn will expand the Great Park’s sports programs and include four tournamentquality soccer fields, two of which will be synthetic grass and lighted for evening use. Other features include four full-size basketball courts, a new restroom and operations facility building, jogging and exercise trail, as well as more than 400 tree plantings. New Visitors Center Pavilion: Replacing the existing temporary Visitors Center, the new 5,000-square-foot Visi-
tors Center Pavilion will be located near the Great Park Balloon. It will be the Great Park’s first new permanent building and feature a larger lobby, restroom facilities, concession area, exhibition areas and office space. Walkable Historical Timeline: The Walkable Historical Timeline, which currently takes visitors on a 750-foot historical walk through history, will be expanded to reach a total of 2,604 feet and include more than 100 additional historical details. It will also serve as a natural connection between the existing Great Park Balloon and the South Lawn. Water features: Six new ponds, the first water features at the Great Park, will be built as part of the project. The Walkable Historical Timeline will connect to one of the ponds and a viewing pier near the entrance to the Great Park. Storm Water Collection System: The South Lawn will feature a state-of-theart storm water management system designed to offset up to 40 percent of the South Lawn’s irrigation needs. The system will capture, filter and store storm water in the new ponds on the South Lawn, where the storm water will be mixed with reclaimed water from Irvine Ranch Water District. Community Garden: Adjacent to the existing Farm + Food Lab, the Community Garden will feature 99 plots, including six Americans with Disability Act-compliant plots. Additionally, an open turf area with a large shade tree and picnic tables will provide a com-
munity gathering area for gardeners to share their experiences. Infrastructure: The construction will also include installation of a variety of infrastructure improvements that will set the stage for future Great Park development, including underground utilities, electrical equipment and lighting, drainage improvements, irrigation systems, asphalt and concrete, fencing and landscaping, as well as the foundational backbone for the future electronic security system. In addition to expanding the Great Park’s current footprint by 15 percent, the construction of the South Lawn will generate more than 50 full-time equivalent construction jobs for the Orange County economy. “The Great Park is proud to move forward with latest phase of the Park, but also proud to contribute to the local economy,” said Mike Ellzey, Chief Executive Officer, Orange County Great Park Corporation. “The development will substantially increase our active space at the Great Park and create badly-needed construction jobs, which will have an important positive economic impact in Orange County.”

When Your Best Friend Needs To Cool Off... Visit The Del Mar Dog Beach By Monique Vargas When I drive up to the cliffs of Del Mar where the “dog beach” is located, my dog smells the sea air and can hardly contain himself. As I look around at the other cars pulling up, I notice a similar reaction with other dogs, wagging tails and and eyes focused on the beach entrance. People are driving up, rushing out of their cars, temporarily leashing their excited canine and literally hustling to the beach entrance where they release their dogs to romp in the sand and sea. This is a friendly place, a laid back beach town, where all local dog lovers enjoy meeting and talking about their day, while their dogs interact and play. I have always had great experiences here, and many pleasant conversations with dog owners while admiring the bevy of beautiful dog breeds. This is one gorgeous, picturesque dog beach in Northern San Diego/ Del Mar, with its enormous cliffs and boulders on the north side, and its large sandy flat area on the south. There are parking kiosks that accept credit cards. However, there is free parking if you are willing to walk a little, and arrive before 10:00AM, Page 6
because this is a very popular beach. Another thing to consider at this dog beach is the tide. The amount of beach available depends on the tide, and the overall size of the dog beach greatly changes. Local stores have tide charts that are worth getting, as it has a major effect on the dynamics of the large sandy beach area. There is an almost river-like section right down the middle that is not really an issue during low tide. When the tide is high, that little river becomes so big that it greatly confines the beach, and the dogs don’t have as much room to run. It’s a beautiful place for dog lovers and truly prime beach here! A great location and at the center of everything in the Del Mar area. If you own a dog or can borrow a four legged friend for the day, it’s a pleasant drive from Orange County. The Del Mar Dog Beach is a must!

Five Tips for Safe Summer Sun
By Kevin Ronneberg, M.D. Summer has arrived. As the weather heats up, it’s critical for beachgoers and outdoor fun-seekers to be sun-safe. This begins with choosing the right sunscreen to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Equally important are these five simple tips from the Skin Cancer Foundation, which also will help you mitigate sun damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer. First, seek the shade. Simply minimizing exposure to UVA and UVB rays can go a long way toward protecting your skin. Taking a break from direct sun is especially important between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when rays are strongest. And remember, clouds don’t block UV rays. Infants under 6 months should always be kept out of the sun -- protected with clothing, an umbrella or a stroller hood. Children and adults should wear protective clothing, including wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses. Second, use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Regardless of the season, this kind of sun protection should be used on a daily basis. Most people understand the importance of sun
safety during the summer months, but many underestimate the need for year-round protection. The temperature may drop, but UV rays remains strong. And the cooler temperatures may actually prevent people from realizing the extent of the damage the sun is doing to their skin. Next year, new regulations from the Food and Drug Administration will help consumers know they’re getting the right protection by prohibiting manufactures from labeling their sunscreens as “broad spectrum” or making claims about protecting against skin cancer and aging unless they’re SPF 15 or higher. And sunscreens with lower SPF values will have to sport a warning that the product may not offer protection against the harmful effects of exposure to the sun. Third, apply 1 ounce of sunscreen to the entire body 30 minutes before going outside. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, for full SPF protection, sunscreen must be applied half an hour before sun exposure. If you are average size, you’ll need a full ounce -- or about two tablespoons -- to adequately cover your skin. Studies show that most people apply less than half that amount, losing the full benefit of the SPF protection.
Reapplication is just as important as putting sunscreen on in the first place, as sunscreens tend to break down with exposure and can be rubbed off or washed off by sweat or water. So sunscreen should be applied every two hours, and immediately after swimming or a set of tennis. During a full day at the beach, one person should expect to use at least a quarter of an 8 oz. bottle of sunscreen. Fourth, do not let yourself burn. Sunburn is the most immediate and obvious sign of UV damage. When immune cells race to the injured skin site to start healing the damage, they produce the reddening and swelling. Tanning is the skin’s response to this damage and may permanently affect skin cells. While many believe a “base tan” will prevent damaging burns, that’s not the case. There is no such thing as a healthy or base tan. Finally, check your skin regularly and ask your doctor for a skin cancer exam annually. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer. Tans and burns can be the first step. Intermittent but intense UV exposure is more closely associated with melanoma, the most deadly variety of skin cancer,
June 22, 2012
than chronic sun exposure. One blistering sunburn in childhood or five in a lifetime doubles the risk of melanoma. To check yourself for signs of skin damage, inspect your skin from head to toe, looking for spots or sores that heal too slowly, new growths, and any moles or beauty marks that change in color, texture, or size. And once each year, be sure to ask your physician for a skin checkup. Sunscreens are an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. They keep skin looking young and reduce the risk of many skin cancers. They must be used properly, however. These five suggestions will help keep you and your skin safe. Dr. Kevin Ronneberg is the associate medical director at Target.
CHILI VAN SPONSORSHIP PROVIDES HOMELESS WITH MORE THAN JUST A HOT MEAL When a homeless individual in Orange County eats a warm bowl of chili from the Orange County Rescue Mission’s Mobile Chili Van, he or she may not realize that this is just the first step in the direction of a new life. According to Jim Palmer, President of the Rescue Mission, many Orange County residents in need have found that the Mobile Chili Van feeds not only their hunger, but also their soul, as they realize that the van is a connection to people who truly care and want to help. “We have watched people go from a life living on the streets to a self–sufficient life, all because of an initial bowl of chili,” explained Palmer. “The van provides the homeless with an outlet for information and a connection to our services. The individuals, couples and families we reach when providing these hot meals often become residents of our transitional living facilities, and may not have sought or found this assistance otherwise.” The Chili Van allows the Orange County Rescue Mission to enter the lives of the homeless in a unique way, by going to them instead of waiting for them to seek help.
“For example, we served chili to a local couple, Gene and Tasha, when they were homeless and struggling,” explained Palmer. “Today, they live with us at the Village of Hope and help feed others. Gene works in the kitchen and makes the chili we share with the hungry. That initial bowl of chili was the first step for Gene and Tasha to turn their lives around.” Many other local individuals and families’ lives have been changed because of the Mobile Chili Van. Recognizing this opportunity, the Rescue Mission has introduced a new way for the community to get involved and feed the hungry of Orange County - local residents and businesses can now sponsor the Mobile Chili Van for a one-time donation of $480. According to Palmer, the OCRM chili van feeds more than 400 hungry and homeless men, women, and children each week, but there are many areas in Orange County which are still in need of these services.
“Many of the homeless and impoverished throughout Orange County have no way of traveling to and from soup kitchens or shelters in order to receive a hot meal, and the support and information they need to turn their lives around,” explained Palmer. “By offering this Chili Van sponsorship to the public, we hope to be able to reach even more individuals who are in need this summer, and help them
change their lives.” At a sponsorship cost of $480, the Chili Van can feed up to 300 people at a time. For more information on the Chili Van or to sign up as a sponsor, please contact Ryan Burris at Ryan. Burris@RescueMission.org or (714) 247-4343, or visit www.RescueMission.org.

Puttin’ On the Ritz Last Call Raises Funds for OC Philharmonic Society
Barbara Taylor, Patricia Cranford, Darby Manclark and Barbara Joyce Dieda and Glroia Osbrink Steinberg
The Philharmonic Society of Orange County’s Big Canyon/Spyglass Hill Philharmonic Committee held its “Puttin’ On The Ritz” Last Call, benefit gala at The Ritz Restaurant in Newport Beach where around 110 attended the glamours affair. They renewed friendships, met new people and came together to raise funds for the Philharmonic Society of Orange County. Many were “Puttin on the Ritz” with their glitz and glamour attire - the black tie affair flourished with tuxedos and glitzy gowns; everyone dressed to impress. The evening began with cocktails in the Garden area of the Ritz Restaurant with passed appetizers where folks perused the many silent auction items. Warm sunny weather, green foliage and music by the Baker Boys greeted the arriving guests. Large Champagne glasses adorned the tables with beautiful white roses. Attendees enjoyed a delicious multi-course dinner consisting of The Ritz salad, poached Atlantic salmon, seared Tournedo of Filet Mignon and Framboise au Chambord. Highlight of the evening was of course the numerous amounts of fantastic luxury items that were up for grabs during the silent auction. Bidding wars began as folks fought after the auction items. They included a two night stay Ed Czisny, Paul Penrose, Dr. Ray Osbring and Al Clark at Palm Mountain Resort and Spa; a one night stay at Rudolf Valentino’s House in the Movie Colony (including breakfast, lunch and dinner); a seven night stay in a beautiful condo in Cabo San Lucas and lunch for six at lovely Shady Canyon Country Club and many more. The event was chaired by Darby Manclark with help from her committee Barbara Steinberg and Barbara Taylor. Manclark assured everyone that the party would live up to its name, “Puttin’ On The Ritz”, raising about $22,000 for the Philharmonic Society of Orange County. After dinner the Baker Boys accelerated the musical tempo and this brought many of the partygoers onto the dance floor. Seen kicking up their heels, Darby and Bill Manclark, Martha and Malcolm Green, Joyce and Al Dieda and Patricia and Otis Cranford to name a few. For more than 50 years the Philharmonic Society of Orange County has provided programs to increase the knowledge and appreciation of music and arts by providing a wide variety of music and educational experiences for children from kindergarten through high school. For the past 35 years the Big Canyon/Spyglass Hill chapter has supported these programs through thousands of volunteer hours and fundraising events. I’ve lived in California all my life. I grew up in Northern, CA. so I’m a big fan of the San Francisco Giants and 49er’s. We moved to Rancho Santa Margarita 14 years ago. It’s a great place to live! Awesome families and friends. My beautiful wife Mary and I have been blessed with four wonderful kids, Desmond 21, Sage 16, Eve 12, and Duke 6. I started coaching 20 years ago in all different sports. My first coaching experience was with my younger brother. I coached his 15 year old baseball team. Coaching at that level right out of the gate was by far my biggest challenge. Although it was tough my brother and I became closer from the experience. Since then I have coached several years in Little League Baseball and Pop Warner Football. It sounds like a cliché but I love coaching sports because of the players. Each season it’s like being part of a family. You grow together, learn together, laugh together, cry together, and love together. During the process you compete with yourselves and others to be better at the sport you enjoy. The greatest part of coaching is the help you receive from volunteers during the process. I have had wonderful assistant coaches, parent volunteers, and friends who have helped me not make a mess of things for many years. I thank them for their time, energy, and encouragement. Outside of coaching I spend time hanging out with my family, golfing , and having fun with friends. Also I volunteer as a board member for Tesoro High School Lacrosse and Santa Margarita Pop Warner Football. I want to thank Kevin and Maria Hickman at Athletes Choice for this honor and also for opening their business in Ranch Santa Margarita. Peace.

The tournament raised nearly $90,000 (net) to benefit the Designed for Healing enhancement project at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center (SMMC). Approximately 130 physicians, corporate partners and other supporters of Saddleback Memorial enjoyed a challenging day of golf on the 18-hole course fondly dubbed “Mission Impossible.” “It’s exciting to see how the number of players grows each year,” said Saddleback Memorial Foundation president Cecilia Belew. “We are grateful for the many people who support healthcare in our community.” “The Designed for Healing enhancement project is the first renovation of its kind since opening in 1974,” said Steve Geidt, chief executive officer of Saddleback Memorial Medical Center. “Private rooms are being added, and enhancements are being made to patient rooms of the Women’s Hospital, Main Hospital, lobbies, atrium and gift shop. Upon completion, patients and their families will have an improved healing experience in our new environment.” The fundraising event culminated in a cocktail reception and awards ceremony, along with a live auction led by Saddleback Memorial – San Clemente administrator Tony Struthers. Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll” who was responsible for launching the careers of each icon, brought the four legendary musicians together at the Sun Records storefront studio in Memphis for the first and only time. When the Broadway production opened in April 2010, critics and audiences leapt to their feet in unanimous praise. The New York Times called the show, “a buoyant new musical that whips the crowd into a frenzy,” New York Magazine said it is, “a dazzling raucous spectacle that sounds like a million bucks,” and NY1 called it, “90 minutes of platinum grade entertainment.” The musical continues its successful New York engagement at New World Stages through June 24th, 2012. The Chicago production of Million Dollar Quartet opened in 2008 and is still playing to packed houses at the Apollo Theatre. John French is Unstoppable as Champion and Reserve Champion in the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby It was an exceptional level of competition as the second week of the June Classic series wound down this afternoon. Course Designer Scott Starnes was the spearhead to all the excitement with both the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby and the $30,000 June Classic Grand Prix taking place on the International Grass Grand Prix Field. John French and Rusty Stewart were both able to master Starnes’ designs and go home as Champions. The weather couldn’t have been better in San Juan Capistrano as the thirty three rounds of High Performance Hunters geared up for the challenge Saturday afternoon. The Classic Round saw many Derby veterans, including French, opt out of the higher options and instead, “focus on building the horse’s confidence with hopes to score high enough to come back for the Handy Round.” French continued, “Small Affair was really looking at the jumps a lot and jumping really big so I decided I’d better study the jumps and not take too many risks to be safe.” The Grand Prix Grass Field made for a scenic course that included multiple brush obstacles, white board gates, hedge oxers and beautiful natural foliage. After a slight course adjustment, French was able to bring back three of the twelve combinations for the Handy Round: Small Affair, Sander and Over The Moon. “I can take more chances with Sander,” mentioned French of this Reserve Champion mount, “and can really ride the plan I make and know I won’t have too many issues. I was really happy with him.” Sander was the only recipient of all 16 handy points, moving up from 7th to 2nd overall. Undefeated Champion Small Affair was the one to beat after topping the leader board with a combined score of 388. “The judges just really love the way he jumps.” French smiled, “He is such a joy to ride and I couldn’t be happier. I thought the footing was great, the course was just right with the right amount of spookiness and options that made it a fun challenge. I love coming out to Blenheim because it’s such a great venue to show at.” Thoroughly pleased with the overall result of the day, Starnes added, “the Classic and Handy rounds had some options that some riders took advantage of and as a result really brought out the best of the group. John (French) truly is the Derby master” Stand out performances go to Junior rider Savannah Jenkins who
set the bar with the top scores in both the Classic and Handy rounds up until Small Affair reclaimed the lead. Jenkins and Sophie Griot’s Alicante made a gallant effort receiving 14 handy points to move up from fourth and take home third. Fellow up and coming Junior Rider Kilian McGrath also returned for the Handy Round aboard Springfield and finished eleventh respectively. The sunshine returned for the final day of competition and for the fifteen horse and rider combinations taking on the $30,000 June Classic Grand Prix, presented by Royal Champion. Coming out of the Derby, course designer Starnes kept things straightforward but asked multiple questions for the broad range of competitors to answer. “I want it to be technical,” Starnes nodded, “with some size and spreads. It’s not going to be a class of numbers but more about quality. It should be a fun ride.” Four rounds into the class, the time allowed was adjusted for the large track from 100 to 105 seconds. The large track and complex lines resulted in multiple refusals and unfortunate rails. Many of the four faulters found complications in the vertical-vertical combination, not to mention numerous looks and lines misjudged at the triple bar and vertical-oxer-vertical combination However, three riders were able to break away from the competition and make it back for the jump-off. Lane Clarke and Granville Equine’s Casseur De Prix were the first to return and set the bar. Clarke put together another clear round, galloping between fences and cutting corners, securing his lead with a time of 45.600. Last week’s $30,000 Blenheim Grand Prix winner, Tina Di Landri guided her champion mount Avargo to what looked to be a back to back victory, but with an unfortunate rail, the 20-year-old was able to gallop her way to a solid third place in 45.546. Rusty Stewart and Grey Fox Farm’s 10-year-old Bristol came in knowing he’d have to be careful but still fast to top the leader board. “What a great course Scotty made, “Stewart mentioned, “I was able to gallop through the lines to cut down time but stay cautious enough to keep all the rails up. It was a smart course.” Stewart charged towards the final oxer and stopped the clock in a clean 45.288, good enough for first place and a one month supply of Royal Champion’s Premium Plus Supplements. “It ended up being a wonderful

class.” Starnes smiled, “I’m sure Rusty (Stewart) had a slight advantage going last but he rode it so well so I couldn’t be happier. It was a great group in the jump-off and a nice way to wrap up the show”. The third week of the Blenheim June Series continues next week with highlights including the $30,000 June Classic III Grand Prix, present-
ed by EquiFit, inc., set for Sunday, June 24th and the Zone 10 West Coast Pony Hunter Challenge on Saturday and Sunday. Both events will be held on the grass. LAGUNA ART MUSEUM DONATES FOUR OUTERBRIDGE PHOTOS TO FESTIVAL OF ARTS On Wednesday, June 13, Laguna Art Museum presented a gift to the Festival of Arts of four photographs by Paul Outerbridge, all previously owned by Laguna Art Museum. Malcolm Warner, executive director of Laguna Art Museum, and Janet Blake, curator of collections, presented the gift to Festival of Arts board president Fred Sattler; Tom Lamb, vice president; and Pat Kollenda, secretary. “How wonderful on our 80th anniversary to receive this addition to our permanent art collection which furthers the documentation of the Festival’s history,” said Festival of Arts President Fred Sattler. The four photographs, all from 1950–51, have recently been identified as relating to the Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters. One photograph is a portrait of artist and Festival of Arts founder Roy Ropp in his studio. The three other photographs are of three posed pictures at the Pageant of the Masters. The subject of the three living pictures from the 1950 Pageant of the Masters were identified by Malcolm Warner as Diana the Huntress, a sculpture by Anna Hyatt Huntington from 1922; The Departure of Lot and His Family from Sodom by Peter Paul Rubens, c. 1613–15; and The Annunciation by Hans Memling, 1465–75. The Rubens is in the collection of the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, and the Memling is in the collection of the Metropolitan Page 16

Museum of Art. Since 1932 the Pageant of the Masters, which takes place on the grounds of the Festival of Arts, has produced an annual production of tableaux vivants, or “living pictures,” which are re-creations of works of art with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. The Board of Trustees of Laguna Art Museum unanimously approved the gift, noting that it was fitting that the four photographs be in the collection of the Festival of Arts. Director Malcolm Warner remarked that both Laguna Art Museum and the Festival of Arts can trace their heritage to the Laguna Beach Art Association, which was founded in 1918, and are in that sense related institutions. Paul Outerbridge (b. 1896 New York City, d. 1958 Laguna Beach, California) was a designer and illustrator in New York before turning to photography in the 1920s. Outerbridge’s work appeared in magazines such as Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, and McCall’s, as well as in exhibitions of fine photography at Royal Photographic Society in London, the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Getty. In 1943 he moved to Southern California where he continued photographing and writing about photography until his death in 1958. He was himself an exhibitor at the Festival of Arts in 1949, 1950, 1955, and 1957. Outerbridge

was celebrated for his ability to transform commonplace objects into semiabstractions through a keen sensitivity to pattern and light. “The Festival is appreciative of Malcolm Warner, Janet Blake and the Laguna Art Museum Board of Trustees for the collaborative spirit in which this gift was made. These photographs by Paul Outerbridge represent a connective union on many levels and reinforces the historic bond between our organizations,” stated Festival of Arts Vice President Tom Lamb.

Best Beaches in Orange County Where to Find the Best Beaches Along the Shores of Orange County, California
Laguna Beach
By Jim Shawt Being raised in Southern California, it was almost mandatory to become a surfer. I had an immediate attraction to the ocean because of the calming feeling I got from the salt air and the sound of the waves. In addition, I have been to almost every break from the Oregon coast to Ensenada Mexico, but I think that Orange County beaches are the best, hands down! In the 60s and 70s, the best beaches for surfing and sunbathing were in Los Angeles. But today the crowd has shifted south to Orange County, most likely due to water pollution. If you are visiting Southern California and looking for the right beach to visit, many of the locals will guide you to a crowded and not so attractive spot. This is because there are only a few spots that are not yet discovered…… well until now.
surfside. To reach surfside, drive south on Warner Ave, all the way to the beach, turn right immediately after you pass Jack-In-The-Box. Head all the way down and park when the street ends. There are many good surf spots and plenty of sand to find a good place to sunbathe. Heading south on PCH will take you to beautiful Huntington Beach. There are two good breaks in Huntington Beach. The first spot is called ‘the cliffs’, this beach can be reached by driving south on Goldenwest, then take a left on PCH (parking is available on the street). This beach is great to spend a sunny afternoon with family or friends. The other break in Huntington Beach that is worth visiting, is the Huntington Beach Pier. The pier is famous for professional surfing events and a hot spot for tourism.
Newport Beach
The first break when you head south from Los Angeles is in Seal Beach. Seal Beach is situated at the border of LA and Orange County. Most people go to the Seal Beach Pier but just south from there is a little known spot called
However, to beat the crowds, drive about 300 yards north of the pier. Park near the Taco Bell, hence the name ‘Taco Bell Reef’. However, if you’re looking for a beach with a party atmosphere, then head south to Newport Beach. You’ve
probably have heard of Newport Beach from the popular TV show ‘the OC’. The beach I always frequent is secretly located in an upscale neigh-
way down from the Laguna foothills and empties into the sea. A marine life refuge borders to the north and south, rocky outcroppings clearly mark the park boundary. These features plus the congenial Southern California climate make Aliso Beach Park an ideal place to visit. Capistrano Beach Park. Enjoy volleyball, basketball and other beach activities. During the summer months, a concession building offers fishing gear rental and sales, food and beverages, and beach supplies. Salt Creek Park Provides South County residents access to 18 acres of public beaches. The park consists of landscaped parking facility, sandy beaches, rocky promontories, and
San Clemente
borhood. In fact, celebrities such as Kobe Bryant and Dennis Rodman live there. Just head south on PCH till the road splits into two directions. Take a slight right onto Balboa Blvd. Now, take a quick right, and drive around. The best spots are from 45th St to 54th St. I love this place because there is something going on every day. Also, the city takes good care of the sand and the water is clean. The next stop on our tour is Laguna Beach. In its infancy years, the city was regarded as an artist colony. Today Laguna Beach is famous for its eclectic beachfront stores and great restaurants. The main strip will lead you to the pier, which is very crowded in the summer, but still it’s a great beach to visit. Aliso Beach Park features sandy beaches, rocky promontories, and scenic coastal foothills. These geological features combine to form one of the most recreationally appealing areas along the entire California coast. The park consists of two sections, the beach itself and an inland area surrounded by native coastal chaparral. Aliso Creek winds its
sheer cliffs. The original ravine canyon locally known as Salt Creek, makes the northerly boundary of the beach. Grading and landscaping have been completed in such a manner as to blend with the natural features, leaving the beach and cliff area basically undisturbed. Since 1937 San Clemente has been one of the most popular beaches in California. A dramatic setting and invigorating air satisfy its many visitors, whatever their interest, energy level or state of mind. The mile long beach stretches between the curling ocean surf and the foot of a steep bluff. Midway between Los Angeles and San Diego, the park attracts water sports enthusiasts and those seeking respite from the inland heat or an escape from nearby metropolitan areas. Orange County has a beach for everyone, from partygoers to the typical family man. Most the spots have free parking, which can be found in residential neighborhoods near the shore, i.e. avoid beaches where you have to drive through a pay booth. Well, bring a lot of sun tan lotion and have a great time!
