Men’s Contrast Collar Shirts Trend Article By: Ben Herbert With Jos giving us a total guide to the lounge suit this week, I thought now would be the perfect time to feature a trend that can easily crossover into your worker wear wardrobe this autumn/winter. That trend is the contrast collar shirt. For those that are too young to remember this trend the last time it was in fashion, the contrast collar shirt is just that; the main body of your shirt is one colour, whilst the collar (and often the cuffs) are of a different contrasting colour. Sounds hideous? Well, you would be surprised at how far men’s fashion has come – we have progressed so far as individuals that we can now integrate pretty much any item into our outfits, and really create a statement at the same time. If I was honest, this is a trend I never thought would come back so strong – as the last time I remember wearing one of these shirts was around 10 years ago! However, with the majority of men being much more clued up now with regard to fashion and style, all of us are looking for an edge or to stand out from the crowd. Designers have been continuously revamping and re-releasing items/trends with modern takes in order fill this growing need; this is just another one of those pieces that you will either love and integrate into your personal style, or something you will not feel comfortable wearing. For those ready to dismiss this trend immediately due to the fact it reminds you of unfashionable days gone by, I urge you to carry on reading in order to

see how versatile the piece is, and how easily it is to wear this season. It might just take your casual and work looks to the next level. The classic light blue shirt with white collar is an iconic style that is very easy to pair against your black, navy or grey suits. Don’t be afraid of patterns; stripes, gingham and checks are all very popular this year and look particularly great against the solid colour of the collar. So how should you wear this piece as a 21st century gentleman? Well, the easiest way is to utilise the contrast collar shirt with a suitable tie and your work suits. The fully suited looks in the look book above show just how well this type of shirt works when you are buttoned up with a tie.

Suddenly you have 3 colors (the shirt, collar and tie) working together in harmony in the top section of your outfit, all anchored by the neutral suit jacket. It definitely shows some flair and it would certainly make you stand out against all the other black suit, white shirt and dark tie members of your office. Something else to consider to really finish this work look off would be to pair a pocket square with one of the 3 main colours. My personal preference is to match it to the collar. Due to most of the contrasting collars being white, you could use a simple white cotton version to subtly coordinate with it – showing attention to detail most others wouldn’t even consider.

Entertain with a Rustic Roasted Meal

Feeding a lot of people doesn’t have to be daunting. A comforting one-dish meal is perfect for any occasion – whether you’re throwing a casual get-together, having a housewarming party or hosting a family gathering. A heaping platter of Roasted Vegetables with Rotini and ParsleyRosemary Pesto will satisfy even the heartiest appetite, plus it’s easy to make. Curly rotini pasta, tossed with a homemade pesto, lean chicken sausage and your choice of roasted vegetables is a crowd-pleaser – and makes an appetizing presentation. A couple of things set this recipe apart. For one, preparing it with Dreamfields pasta provides added nutritional benefits. Made from durum wheat semolina, Dreamfields has the Page 6

same taste and texture as traditional pasta, but with twice the fiber and fewer digestible carbohydrates (only five grams) per 1-cup cooked serving. The unique pesto, made with parsley, rosemary and walnuts rather than the traditional basil and pine nuts is another standout in this dish. Simply puree all the ingredients in a food processor, toss with roasted veggies, sausage and pasta, and dinner is served. For this and more amazing recipes, visit www.dreamfieldsfoods.com. Men’s Fashion Trend: Loosely Tailored Pants Finally! We are kicking skinny jeans to the curb! Over the past several decades we have watched the fashion trends for men’s pants evolve through extremes. The 1970’s brought us the bell-bottom style. While they were tight near the hips they compensated with flaring bottoms at the feet. The nineties brought us to the JNCO/Levi Pipes (yes they still exist) urban grunge baggy era. Somehow from there we entered the dark ages of the thigh-squishing skinny jeans. Pants so tight you can only wonder how they peeled those things on. It seemed as though we were doomed to live in this world forever. We can all breathe a sigh of relief because there is a new hero to save us from the dreaded skinny jeans: loosely tailored pants. The relaxed cut of yesterday is not to be confused with the relaxed tailoring on the rise. Baggy loose-cut pants are nothing new (you can find them at any department store you frequent) so do not err. The key to catching this rising fashion trend is to make sure they are tailored. Although loose fitting clothing can often be seen as informal, they are not so loose that they are seen as street wear. To be sure you are in with this years loose fit trends remember these tell tale signs: Think tailored (through the thighs and hips). Pants should hang from just below the belt. Loose, not baggy. Pants piled up around the ankle looks sloppy and if the excess material gets walked on for too long it becomes frayed and looks even worse. Loosely tailored pants provide for comfort and produce a low-key attitude. The Protégé Jean from AG Adriano is a good place to start if you want to be “dressed up or dressed down”. If you want to be even more casual but still look good J. Crew offers the Vintage slim-cut jean. For a night out, try Banana Republic’s Heritage slim straight-fit jeans with a tailored blazer.

Suit up: Menswear combines classic and casual for comfortable style Women have plenty to be jealous of when it comes to men’s fashion. A few staples to fill the closet and most men will look polished and put together, even as the trend leans toward the casual look. “Culturally we have moved toward being comfortable,” said Kris Moody, owner of Well Suited, a men’s wear shop on Public Square. It is hard not to see the prominence of business casual as the professional look of the new millennium. And many young men today often display the conflicting combination of the country club and night club. Just as with the ladies, a few basic pieces build the foundation to a fine wardrobe. Then you can add some trendy pieces to update your look. “We do mostly suits, and the trends for suits are still on the slim side,” Moody said. “We are seeing a lot of two-button jackets and double-breasted suits.” The same styling has been popular for sports jackets. Men’s fashion is cyclical, with trends tending to come around again, fade out and then come back. And this happens much slower than the rapid turnover of women’s fashion, which can vary season to season. “This is actually better because you can invest in a suit and know you can wear it for several seasons,” Moody said. When it comes to more casual looks, bright colors have been on-trend lately, as well as the

slimmer-fitting silhouette. For the majority of men, however, looking stylish is a priority more than being trendy. In this case, invest in a quality suit in a basic color such as navy, charcoal or black. Try a versatileweight fabric as well so you can wear it in warmer and cooler temperatures. Lighter shades of camel, khaki or tan will also work, but the darker shades are more flexible for various situations — from dinners out, to the office, to a wedding. “No matter what you choose, you want a suit to fit your body,” Moody said. The same can be said of all men’s fashion. Although slimmer fits have been the rage, more athletic builds or even rounder physiques are not at all flattered by the tapered styling. Guys should opt for a good fit over fashion trends as looking your best is always stylish. Apply this rule to buying casual For the most part, common sense is key. If it pants and denim as well. Select a style that suits your shape and doesn’t add a lot isn’t comfortable, then you won’t look your best, of extra fabric that will bunch or look baggy, nor confident self. should you squeeze into skinnier sizes. courts. Some played it safe – and disappointed us -- with traditional attire. Fortunately, there were others who played with color and patterns as they With the first round of play at the 2012 Australian Open already completed, put together outfits for the year’s first major. Below are our notes for which Tennis Now takes a step back and look at what all 128 men wore on the ATP players brought their summer best to Melbourne.

Adidas: The blue courts of Melbourne Park are the perfect complement to bright colors on player kits. Surprisingly, only adidas takes advantage of this backdrop with the vibrant reds and yellows of their adizero line; the company’s three-stripe logo (on the sleeves) and some graphic detail along the bottom of the shirt break up the solid colors. (Seen on: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Fernando Verdasco.)

Yonex: Yonex gave Lleyton Hewitt a little push in adding an orange geometric pattern to the back of his red crew. Albeit somewhat derivative – both Nike and adidas have shown great designs with embellished back panels in years past – this Yonex shirt is a refreshing change from the staid offerings of this Japanese brand.

Wilson: Since debuting a revamped apparel collection at the 2010 U.S. Open, Wilson has consistently produced well-designed clothes for both the men and women on its roster. Feliciano Lopez, Philipp Kohlschreiber, and Topper: Longtime Yonexer David Nalbandian has switched over to the South Jarkko Nieminen are all wearing a crew that combines color blocking in the American brand Topper. Need a Quick Room Makeover? Look to Lighting Solutions Ever wonder how designers make the rooms you see in magazines or on decorating shows look so good? It doesn’t always depend on paint colors or fabric choices. From fresh and airy, to intimate and cozy – and everything in between – lighting sets the tone of a room and should be an integral part of its design and layout. And you can make dramatic changes by doing something as easy as switching out a light bulb. So if you want to give a room a makeover, or just freshen it up a bit, use these tips from the lighting pros at SYLVANIA to brighten things up. Types of Lighting Not only does a good lighting plan make a room more inviting, it also makes it more functional. To create a good lighting plan, you’ll need different kinds of light: Ambient – Provides overall illumination and a comfortable level of brightness, allowing people to see and move around safely and easily. Task – Helps you perform a specific activity, such as reading or playing games, by concentrating light in a particular place. Accent – Sets the mood and highlights certain areas and objects, such as paintings, walls and collectibles. Decorative – Fixtures become an

element of the space themselves, such as chandeliers or pendants. The type of light bulbs you use matter as well. Due to the EISA Act of 2007, traditional incandescent light bulbs will eventually be phased out; however there are several energyefficient options, ranging from CFLs to halogen or LED light bulbs. No matter what room you’re looking to improve, there is an energy-efficient light option that will be a perfect fit. Dining Room Using dimmers and layering with light gives you flexibility for different occasions. For an elegant look, blend low levels of light sources throughout the room. When installing light over the dining room table, be careful not to create shadows on the faces of your guests. Placing additional light sources elsewhere in the room helps to balance the light. Use adjustable accent lamps with SYLVANIA halogen bulbs to highlight plants, artwork, or special furniture pieces. These bulbs are fully dimmable and use between 22 and 33 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs. Living Room For general lighting, use fixtures

with a dimmer. The light source is concealed, and with dimming capabilities you can change the lighting of the room for various activities from reading to movie watching. A good choice for these fixtures would be the SYLVANIA Ultra A-Line 12watt LED bulbs. They’re the brightest replacement for the typical 60-watt incandescent bulbs, while using 80 percent less energy. They also last 25 times longer. Wall sconces and floor lamps are good sources of task lighting for reading or playing games, while track fixtures can be used to highlight art work or unique wall treatments such as wall washing or glazing. Place light sources at various heights within the room to add visual interest. Use translucent shades on table lamps to contribute to the ambient light level. Bedrooms General lighting can be provided

by ceiling fixtures, chandeliers, fan lights, recessed downlights or wall sconces that use halogen or LED bulbs. Use a floor-mounted directional fixture to project light through plants from the floor to soften a room with interesting shadows. Place the light behind a large plant or indoor tree and aim it through the leaves towards the ceiling. Use a low wattage energy efficient bulb to brighten up the closet. These bulbs have a long life and offer energy-efficiency and quality color. Provide light for reading by choosing swing-arm or flexible bedside lamps.

NEGU Gala Benefits Dreams of 12 Year Old

Jessie and her family - Eric Dad, Stacey Mom, older sister Ahaya, little brother “JT” (photo by Rick Brotherton)

When writing about society events, most the time they are written about those that have already past. Words are written about the amazing food, fabulous people, the décor, glitzy gowns and of course, the money that is raised, all in the name of charity. These charities work very hard throughout the year to plan these events, so this column dedicated to that work, is heartwarming to say the least. This week’s column will concentrate on a charity that needs your help as it was started by a 12 year old girl who battled two inoperable brain tumors and lost that battle a few weeks ago; however, the event will and must go on. You might have heard about her as her and her foundation has been getting world-wide press since her passing. Her Facebook page had garnered over 70,000 “likes” in a 24 hour period and the day after her death, her website was visited so much it crashed the server. This 12 year old girl is Jessie Rees. Her and her parents started The NEGU Foundation™; NEGU, which stands for Never Ever Give Up. It’s the motto and message of Jessie. NEGU is a nonprofit organization to raise awareness of pediatric cancer, support sufferers and raise money for research. Jessie’s Jessie working on her “JoyJars” (photo courtesy of the Rees Family) wish was to deliver the NEGU message to every kid fighting cancer in the United States so they can stay strong and never ever give up. The NEGU Foundation™ is all about “encourage-care” for patients and their parents so no one stands alone. Her dream continues as the first annual NEGU Gala will be Saturday, January 21, 2012 at St. Regis Monarch Beach. This special evening of dining, drinks, dancing, and a special concert with John Tesh is all about raising awareness and support so The NEGU Foundation™ can carry on Jessie’s dream and continue to encourage and care for courageous kids fighting cancer. There are over 50,000 in active treatment and they need encouragement, hope, joy and love. Ten months ago, Jessie was a normal seventh grader living in Southern California. After her diagnosis, she became nationally recognized as she blogged her fight against the disease. After her death, she brought thousands to her Facebook page, all in support and prayers for her and her family. She wanted one “like” for each of the estimated 50,000 American children with cancer but instead received almost 120,000 from all over the world as of this date. While some of her posts discussed her struggles as she underwent radiation and chemotherapy treatments, others urged readers in dozens of countries to support pediatric cancer research and to pray for other children with the illness. She always signed her posts with the acronym “NEGU” (NEE’-goo). Jessie Joy Rees, founder of The NEGU Foundation™ (4/8/99 - 1/5/12) (photo by Jessie also thought about what she could do for kids who are hospitalized Rick Brotherton) or fighting serious medical conditions, so she came up with “JoyJars”. Jars filled with just about anything to brighten the day for those who receive them. The foundation sold and has provided thousands of “JoyJars” stuffed with candy and toys to sick children. More than 3,000 were sold and distributed in 27 states last year, according to the NEGU website. The event Saturday is part of many fundraisers for this nonprofit that will help carry on the dream of this little girl. If you are a John Tesh Fan or if you just want to go support this non-profit by attending, please do so. It will be something to remember for a long time. For more information about the NEGU Gala, please visit www.NEGU.org. Tickets and tables are still available.

Dress to kill - Fashion trends for men in 2012

by Sujata Assomull Sippy White or Bright Fashion loves contrasts. And while white has never been hotter, bright colours makes a bold comeback. Go white from head to toe, even when going formal, and yes white shoes are allowed. Jackets and shirts in band collar styles spell smart casual and are great for weekend wear. Just remember to keep the proportion of white balanced; Canali, D&G and Ermenegildo Zegna are the designers to look to for the right statement. Another great option for the weekend are the brights, and Ashish Soni’s collection epitomises the look with a punch of citrus hues. But remember to mix and match your brights with some sober neutrals. Opt for classics like an Herme¨s orange silk tie or Paul Smith’s stripped coloured socks. These add that zing and zaniness to your look. Fresh and fun. Double trouble Smoking jackets are en vogue, while next season you see another classic making a comeback-the doublebreasted jacket. Having made a mark at fashion weeks after a long hiatus, Gucci, Prada, and Roberto Cavalli all went strong on this trend. And every man must have one of these in their wardrobe for daytime dressing. As a rule, double breasted jackets look better on broader men. So if you are slim and still want to imbibe the retro feel that fashion has in 2012, try a three button jacket; it’s very Cary Grant.

Paul Smith striped socks

Hermes orange silk tie

tious mood, we foresee lots of plays on lengths in both men’s and women’s wear at the fashion weeks in 2012. For men, this means shorter jackets and cropped trousers will take centre stage. But this is a tricky trend. “Not all men can wear cropped trousers, but with longer kurtas and sherwanis, they look terrific and often elongate the leg,” suggests Tahiliani. Probably the most fashion forward trend of the year, it has a very cool, young feel, and is an interesting option for weekend dressing for men looking to be on the cutting edge of fashion. So feel free to break the norm and experiment.

Check play Of course it is not all about solids, and in summer, it’s always fun to wear something printed. For working men, plaids are a great option. These are specialised checks, and consist of crossed horizontal and vertical bands in two or more colours in woven cloth. This season, there are large plaids and small plaids-seen at Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton, and Jean Paul Gaultier. As a Scottish fabric, it has a feel of British eccentricity, yet is an acceptable pattern to wear in the workplace. Plaid shirts always Get Shorty Since fash- look professional, and plaid suits in muted tones enhance that ion seems to old-school look. Go with the classics, and you will never go wrong. be in a flirtaThe Newport News

Governor Brown Not Impressed by So-Called Experts Who Say: Don’t build $99 Billion California Bullet Train

Supporters of the voter-approved California Bullet Train were encouraged that Governor Jerry Brown is “not impressed” with a criticism warning of an “immense financial risk” to the state, by a supposedly renowned group of transportation and financial experts who advised lawmakers Tuesday to pull the emergency brake on funding California’s $99 billion high-speed train. The Legislature created the highspeed rail peer review group to weigh the project’s chances for success, and its sobering conclusions are the most striking -- and perhaps most influential -- analysis yet of the pivotal plan lawmakers will evaluate in coming months. Former Caltrans chief Will Kempton, the group’s chairman, said most troubling was the state’s plan to spend all available funding of $6 billion dollars on a small stretch of track in the Central Valley and hope for the rest of the money later. The report failed to mention that the federal government has already promised matching funds “There is simply just no identification of a long-term funding source or commitment, and we think that is a fundamental flaw,” Kempton said. “There is a huge risk they could be stuck with (only) that initial section of track. “Kempton did not cite any sources for that kind of outcome. The report’s release coincides with Wednesday’s start of the Legislative

session, which will end with a vote this June on whether to authorize $2.7 billion in state bond funds to match $3.3 billion in federal money. Though Gov. Jerry Brown continues to support the project, opposition among the public and the Legislature is mounting, particularly as the cost to build has tripled since voters approved the railroad in 2008. As state leaders face a federal deadline this fall to start construction, the report is likely to fuel criticism. State Sen. Mark DeSaulnier, an East Bay Democrat and head of the Senate transportation committee, agreed with the eight-page report, siding with Simitian, most Republican lawmakers and a growing number of Democrats who argue the current plan shouldn’t be funded. But in a 10-page response, the California High-Speed Rail Authority attacked the credibility of the peer review panel and called the analysis “by and large deeply flawed.” They accuse the group of holding the bullet train to an impossible funding standard, noting other megaprojects have been built segment-by-segment without having all the money in place at the onset. “As the report presents a narrow, inaccurate and superficial assessment of the high-speed rail program, it does

Governor Jerry Brown

a disservice to policymakers who must confront these decisions,” project Chairman Tom Umberg said. But Kempton noted that other huge projects, like the Interstate system, had dedicated sources of future funding, such as a gas tax, that the high-speed rail plan does not. The report is particularly surprising because panel members support highspeed rail in concept. The railroad is envisioned to zip passengers between San Francisco and Anaheim by 2034. “It was very hard for me,” said Kempton, currently the head of Orange County’s transportation agency. “I do

believe that we should have a bold vision for transportation but I think that vision has to be tempered with reality, as well.” Their assessment also calls into question doubt over project cost estimates, whether the rail authority is equipped to handle the project and if the train would actually turn a profit. The rail authority denied virtually all the accusations, saying the group’s assertions were “unsupported,” didn’t mention the potential benefits of the project such as the huge amount of jobs created by the project and delay would let massive matching federal funds slip away.

Crews to Close I-405 Nightly for 7th Street Bridge Reconstruction work

Crews install the false work over the San Diego Freeway (I-405) during a nighttime freeway closure as part of the 7th Street bridge reconstruction work for the West County Connectors project. Construction crews will close the San Diego Freeway (I-405) nightly beginning Wednesday to work on the 7th Street bridge reconstruction project as part of the West County Connectors project. Crews are installing temporary structures to support the bridge, or falsework, over the I-405 between Seal Beach Boulevard and the San Gabriel River Freeway (I-605) interchange. The nighttime closures will occur seven days a week between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Monday through Friday and between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The full freeway closures are necessary as part of the northbound I-405 / westbound Garden Grove Freeway (SR-22) / 7th Street connector reconstruction. The bridge is scheduled to reopen to more than 30,000 motorists in April 2012.
