The Sawdust Art Festival is pleased to announce its 2013 “Sustain Local Art and Cuisine” fundraising event scheduled for Sunday, March 10 from 3-7 pm at the Sawdust grounds, hosted under the umbrella of Laguna Beach Visitors & Conference Bureau’s Laguna A La Carte annual event. The Sawdust is excited to partner with local restaurant 370 Common owner Chef Ryan Adams to present a three-course meal with wine and beer pairings. Unique dining-ware, serving-ware and stemware will be made by a team of talented Sawdust artists specially for this event. Sawdust artists will “meet and greet” event guests and demonstrate their creative processes at the event. Guests will take home special art gifts and will have the opportunity to purchase art pieces at the event. A portion of the proceeds raised at the “Sustain Local Art and Cuisine” event will benefit the Sawdust Art Education Fund and will be directly utilized in the creation of a 15-minute educational artist video. Twelve Sawdust artists will be interviewed and captured on film, sharing and demonstrating their specific creative processes. The twelve artist demonstrations will be pieced together into a complete film and will be the fourth in a series of similar films. These films are an integral part in supporting Sawdust’s mission and will serve in educating the public as guests come through the festivals each year. Due to lack of funding, the Sawdust Art Festival has had to put the creation of these films on hold since 2009. In order to retain the knowledge of
unique art forms and how they are created, the production of these artist films is very important to the Sawdust Art Festival. “Sustain Local Art and Cuisine” tickets are $195 per person. Space is limited. Visit www.sawdustartfestival. org/fundraiser or call 949-494-3030 for tickets. Seafood Twice a Week Will Keep Heart and Health at Their Peak Tired of your doctor giving you that same old “be healthy, eat healthy” speech? Well, meeting that challenge is as simple as adding seafood to your diet twice a week. The new and improved Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that all Americans, including pregnant women, eat at least two servings (eight ounces) of seafood every week. The Guidelines are updated every four years by The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the United States Department for Health and Human Services (HHS). Wondering how you’ll manage fitting seafood into your diet twice a week? Look no further than the nutrient filled, protein packed, super shellfish – shrimp. “To incorporate more seafood into your diet, use familiar recipes and swap out the same old protein for seafood like shrimp,” said Jennifer McGuire, MS, RD, National Fisheries Institute. “For example, shrimp is the perfect addition in pasta dishes, salads and sandwiches. NEWPORTERS FIND HAND AND STONE DAY SPA THE MOST RELAXING PART OF THEIR DAY Local Newport Attorney David Beser, Owner of the popular Hand and Stone Massage Day Spa facility says that His personal Philosophy has made his business a success by “helping people relax and feel good about themselves, and eliminating tension in their lives.” After 5 years of practicing law in Orange County, focusing primarily on business and real estate litigation, Beser decided to invest in a new business, and after months of research and proposals, determined that a Hand & Stone day spa franchise was the best option for him. Beser states “we all work very hard at whatever we do, and that we live busy and sometimes relentless lives, which was why the idea of offering an affordable “retreat” from the daily grind really appealed to me. As a practicing attorney, I know that stress and confrontation are just part of the game, which is why I chose to branch out into an industry that focused more on helping people, which is exactly what Hand & Stone Costa Mesa is all about. With our exemplary selection of massage, facial, and skin treatments, customers drive from all over Southern California to take a break, and enjoy a couple hours of relaxation.” Beser seems analytical about his choice, “I was also extremely interested in the membership based business model that Hand & Stone is based on, as it offers business owners a predictable stream of revenue each month, in contrast to other businesses that suffer from the ebb and flow of the seasonal business current.”
“More than anything, however, I wanted to own a business that I believed in, and wanted to take an active part in bettering the everyday lives of Local Newport and Costa Mesa residents. So far, that is working very well for me,” says Beser.

CHOC Children Gala Raises $900,000 The Island Hotel in Newport Beach was the setting for the 5th annual CHOC Cherishes Children Gala that honored the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange and St. Joseph Hospital of Orange. Around 475 guests attended the black-tie affair that featured a cocktail reception, dinner, live auction and entertainment. This year’s gala, themed “A Future Built on Hope,” raised money for the “Change CHOC, Change the World” campaign. Publically launched in spring 2010 and running through June 30, 2013, the comprehensive $125 million fundraising campaign aims to make Orange County one of the safest and healthiest places for children in the nation. Specifically, the campaign will help CHOC realize its vision of achieving national recognition as a premier children’s hospital by building a state-of-the-art patient care tower, set to open this spring; establishing a substantial endowment to support recruiting more of the world’s top pediatric experts who can drive research and clinical breakthroughs; and building upon the academic and research affiliation with UC Irvine and its School of Medicine to advance innovative treatments and cures for children. The décor was breathtaking walking into the ballroom. Since the gala committee couldn’t bring the event to the new tower, the goal was to bring the beautiful new tower to guests. That was reflected in the decor with a dramatic video wall, spanning the entire length - floor to ceiling - of the ballroom. Taking the stage to honor the Lifetime Achievement Awards was CHOC President and CEO, Kimberly Cripe, who presented the awards to Sister Theresa LaMetterey, CSJ, and Steve Moreau, president and CEO, St. Joseph Hospital. During the presentation, Cripe expressed her deep gratitude for the role the honorees have played in CHOC’s history and in supporting the health and well-being of children and families in Orange County. Dinner was served and guests enjoyed for their first course Butter lettuce salad chevre, orange segments, and pomegranate with citrus vinaigrette. The main course consisted of a Petite filet of beef on potato au gratin with red wine sauce and chimichurri and Maine diver scallops on truffle risotto with Beurre Blanc with Ragout of mushrooms with carrots and Brussel sprouts. Decadent desserts were enjoyed; they were Chocolate salted caramel mousse and red velvet cheesecake. A plethora of items were offered for auction this year, which included a Martha’s Vineyard Hideaway; Angels Ultimate Baseball Fantasy; a trip to Casa Fiesta Zihuatanejo, Mexico, but the auction item yielding the highest bid of $26,000 was a luxury golf vacation on the big island of Hawaii. This year, CHOC raised $900,000 which is up from last year’s total of $600,000. Towards the end of the evening, Cripe announced a $27 million gift from Newport Beach resident and retired businessman Bill Holmes to name the new tower, which opens in the coming weeks. The public celebration will be held on February 2nd, from 1-4 p.m. and if you’d like to attend, visit www.choc.org/celebration for more information. The CHOC Cherishes Children gala was organized by a volunteer committee. Executive committee members include chair Heather Madden; Jill Bolton; Christine Bren, Psy.D.; Kristina Dodge; Kathryn Glassmyer Cenci; David Willis; Marsha Willis; and Monica Furman. Premier underwriters for the gala are Heather and Jim Madden, Harry Winston, and Disneyland Resort. Named one of the best children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report (20122013), CHOC Children’s is exclusively committed to the health and well-being of children through clinical expertise, advocacy, outreach and research that brings advanced treatment to pediatric patients. Affiliated with the University of California, Irvine, CHOC’s regional healthcare network includes two state-of-the-art hospitals in Orange and Mission Viejo, several primary and specialty care clinics, a pediatric residency program, and four centers of excellence - The CHOC Children’s Heart, Neuroscience, Orthopaedic and Hyundai Cancer Institutes. OCTA’s new board convenes its first meeting of 2013, addressing different transportation issues and programs.
New Chair and Vice Chair Begin New Leadership Role
In a unanimous decision, OCTA’s board of directors selected Director Greg Winterbottom as the new chairman and Director Shawn Nelson as the new vice chairman of the 17-member board Monday morning. Winterbottom, a public member on the board who has served as vice chairman since 2009, expressed his gratitude to fellow board members as well as his continuing desire to deliver on the promise of providing effective Page 16
infrastructure for the community. “I do thank you very much and will do my best to uphold the seat that has been held by many excellent leaders,” Winterbottom said. “I hope to help move our organization along and make sure to meet all the needs of Orange County residents.” Winterbottom brings more than 25 years of experience in transportation issues to the OCTA board, on which he has been a member since 1993, serving as chairman in 2004.
The Newport News
In addition to his work on the OCTA board, he currently is chairman of the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC). The MSRC works closely with OCTA and reviews funding proposals for projects that reduce air pollution from motor vehicles within the South Coast Air District. Replacing Winterbottom as vice chair is Fourth District Supervisor Shawn Nelson, who joined the board in 2011. In addition to serving on the
OCTA board of directors, Nelson served as the mayor of Fullerton from 2004 to 2007. Nelson is an active member of the community and has served for six years as the city’s representative to the board of directors of the Orange County Water District.
