Hands-On Architecture Toys to Make Learning Fun By Miss Fortune Whether you are a homeschooler or the parent of a mainstream educated child, you can use architecture themed building kits and toys to help with history, motor skills, building principals and geography. Lego is one of the leaders in large scale architecture building systems; one of the biggest perks to investing in them is that they can use incorporated with other Lego sets and bulk packs to create new or modified scenes. There are a lot of companies that make specialty building systems and kits, some of them are better than others in regards to price and replay value. Age recommendations are just that, a suggestion. If your child has building experience they might be able to tackle some of the more advanced systems.

with an architectural or historic slant to them are based off of real world structures. Some of the most popular 3-D puzzles include Big Ben, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Taj Mahal and Empire State Building. These types of puzzles help kids think in a different way when working on the piece; it can help with broadening their thinking skills as well as thinking in a 3-D format.
How can these types of toys and building systems benefit children? You can use them to teach history, geography, building concepts, architectural history and art appreciation. For the basic building sets like GeoMag you can work in science with hands
ArchiQuest Building System: Priced at about seventy dollars, this kits are made up of wood blocks that have printed images on them. There are endless ways to arrange them to make different types of structures in different sizes. The beauty of the system is that you can keep adding to it to make larger scenes and structures. This system was something that my boys loved and spend hours using. From it their love of Lego blossomed but the ArchiQuest system is not interlocking so it requires more planning when doing something with five or six levels. This is something that kids of all ages can use and it is something that can grow with them. In addition to the medieval theme there are also Egyptian and fantasy themed sets that you can get. While they are expensive they are something that will last a long time.
Nanoblock Building Systems: Nanoblock uses the same type of building system as Lego; pegged or studded pieces that interlock to form a shape or design. The prices on most of the specialty Nanoblock sets are about half the price of what you would pay for Lego but there is a noticeable difference in the type of plastic used as well as the overall feel of them. From an educational standpoint the structured sets are amazing; The Easter Island set was one of the first sets I purchased and it was something that the boys loved building. Ultimately they took the
3-D Puzzles: If you have an older child that loves a challenge then 3-D puzzles are worth looking in to. They can be a little hard to get used to since you are not building a traditional flat puzzle but rather something that has sides to it. We have had 3-D puzzles from a couple of different companies like Ravensburger and Puzzle Plex over the years. The ones Page 2

GeoMag: Imagine if you could expand basic building and structure concepts to incorporate symmetry, the use of magnets and the ability to build 3-D shapes. If that sounds interesting then the GeoMag system will make your jaw drop. One of the most amazing things that they boys built with the larger and supplement sets was a DNA double helix. While not on a grand scale of those you would see in college labs, it had over 1,800 pieces. GeoMag is made in Switzerand and is an imported item, the systems and sets are not expensive but they can be hard to find in retail stores. There are magnets in the set so they are not recommended for younger children or use on visual learning. Pacific Symphony YOUTH Wind Ensemble OPENS ITS SIXTH SEASON
Pacific Symphony Youth Wind Ensemble (PSYWE), led by Music Director Joshua Roach (under the direction of Pacific Symphony Music Director Carl St.Clair) presents a vibrant collection of American music performed by the amazing talent of PSYWE. The concert begins with a new piece by Maestro Roach, titled “Overture Dodeca,” which was commissioned by and dedicated to USC’s Larry Livingston in 2011. Next, PSYWE showcases John Mackey’s “Hymn to a Blue Hour,” which poetically captures the fleeting moment when sunset meets twilight. For the finale, PSYWE gives a rousing rendition of Gershwin’s classic “An American in Paris” for concert band. Tickets are $12 general admission. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org/PSYE. Sunday, Dec. 9, at 3 p.m. at San Juan Hills High School, 29211 Vista Montana, San Juan Capistrano, Calif. 92675 PSYWE has quickly gained recognition for being at the forefront of wind ensemble development in the country. Representing 22 schools in and beyond Orange County, PSYWE offers performance opportunities to instrumentalists in grades 9-12, providing members with a high quality and innovative artistic experience. The ensemble strives to encourage musical and personal growth through the art of performance. Students receive guidance from Pacific Symphony musicians and Maestro St.Clair.
PAINTING DESTINED FOR FESTIVAL OF ARTS This past June, Laguna Art Museum presented a gift of four original photographs by Paul Outerbridge to the Festival of Arts. Paul Outerbridge was an exhibitor at the Festival in the early 1950s and his work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution and the Getty Museum. The photographs, all from 1950-51, were identified as relating to the Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters. Three of the photographs depicted Pageant tableaux vivants, whereas the fourth was a portrait, in his studio, of Roy Ropp, artist and considered the Father of the Pageant of the Masters. But the story does not end here, due to a cosmic chance occurrence. Upon reading an article about this generous gift in the fall LAM Magazine, Michael Gosselin realized that he owned the painting depicted behind Roy Ropp in the donated Outerbridge photograph. Being a part of the Laguna community, knowledgeable of the significance of Roy Ropp to Laguna Beach and the Festival of Arts; he immediately contacted the Festival and asked if there was any interest to add this painting to the Festival’s Permanent Art Collection. “Without hesitation, we jumped at this amazing opportunity to accept this Roy Ropp’s painting entitled, ‘Newport Fish Harbor,’” remarked Festival Board Member Tom Lamb. The Ropp painting, recently conserved by Page 4

Susan Brown, and the framed Outerbridge photograph were on display at the Festival of Arts Annual Meeting on Wednesday, November 14th. At the meeting, Michael Gosselin was also recognized for his contribution to the Festival’s Permanent Art Collection. “This donation holds a unique historic sig-
nificance, as it links both the art show and the Pageant. It is must be fate that the painting was donated as we wrap up the Festival’s 80th anniversary and begin celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Pageant of the Masters,” Lamb said. “We can’t begin to thank Michael enough.”

Timeless melodies paired with a choir of heavenly voices celebrate the beauty and revelation of the season during Pacific Symphony’s performance of Handel’s “Messiah,” now a cherished Orange County tradition. Rejoice to thundering trumpets, triumphant timpani and the spine-tingling “Hallelujah” chorus as Pacific Chorale’s Artistic Director John Alexander leads the orchestra, Pacific Chorale and esteemed vocal soloists Kiera Duffy, soprano; Jane Shim, mezzo-soprano; Norman Shankle, tenor; and Stephen Morscheck, bass. Handel’s radiant masterpiece conjures a feeling of joy that reminds audiences of the peace in humanity—a message of inspiration to all. One of several holiday concerts offered by the Symphony, “Messiah” takes place Sunday, Dec. 9, at 3 p.m. in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa. Tickets are $25-$102; for more information or to purchase tickets call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org. Handel’s “Messiah” is highly visual. Each word the chorus sings is painted in the music, as the composer tells the epic story through his grand musical composition; words like “mountain” and “exalted” are replicated with high notes played by the orchestra. The fluttering of wings as the angels appear to the shepherds is conveyed by arpeggios in the strings. This popular holiday performance is both a musical spectacle and an emotional ride for those who share the experience. “Many regard ‘Messiah’ as one of the greatest compositions ever writ-
ten,” says Alexander. “In the realm of choral orchestral music, ‘Messiah’ has probably received more performances than any other composition ever written. I have conducted some 30 performances of ‘Messiah’ during my career, yet I have never grown tired of performing this great masterwork. Each time that I approach it as a conductor, I marvel at its beauty, structure and originality.” Born in Germany in 1685 during the Baroque period, Handel began his practice in music as a violinist with an opera orchestra in Hamburg. Then, at the age of 9, he began making his mark as a classical musician. The Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels heard young Handel play the organ, which led to the Duke’s persistent urging to his father that the boy continue his studies in music. Following his father’s approval, Handel moved to Italy, where he began to develop into a master of music. His travels served as his inspiration in composing oratorios and operas. ”Messiah” remains his most famous composition. Known today as a Christmas classic, it was originally intended to
plant the seed of Christian thought and faith centered on the Lent and Easter season. “As with most music of the Baroque era, Handel leaves many more decisions to be made by the performers than we find with composers of later times,” continues Alexander. With this type of freedom being granted to the conductor and performers, each rendition of ‘Messiah’ can be a new and refreshing experience. When dealing with a work like ‘Messiah,’ every performance has the freedom to be a new creative experience, with new decisions being made to create new musical results.” Alexander’s long and distinguished career has encompassed conducting hundreds of choral and orchestral performances nationally and in 27 countries around the globe. Most recently, in June 2008, Alexander received the “Michael Korn Founders Award for Development of the Professional Choral Art” from Chorus America, and celebrated his 40th season with Pacific Chorale in the 2011-12 season.

Five of the Hottest Technology Gifts for Christmas 2012 By L. Spain Once again retailers are gearing up for Black Friday holiday sales. In fact, they are so excited that some of them are even offering their Black Friday specials in the evening on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day! While many shoppers have become jaded to Black Friday enticements, 2012 may be a little different. This year the hottest technology gifts have finally hit low price points that should be attainable for many American families.

Almost 600 of Southern California’s most notable people attended the popular annual Night of Miracles, emceed by ESPN SportsCenter Anchor Neil Everett. Themed this year as “Miracles Le Cirque”, the gala celebrated the imaginary world of Le Cirque – bubbling with its key elements of art, dance, dexterity, daring and grace. Incredible performances by Il Circo, the critically acclaimed troupe of gravity defying acrobats, entertained guests in addition to a lively silent and live auction. Guests also enjoyed an exclusive taste of various specially prepared Nolet’s Silver Dry Gin cocktails, donated by Miracles for Kids event sponsor and longtime supporter Carl Nolet and Nolet Spirits USA. “Miracles Le Cirque has been another great success for Miracles for Kids, which has been a critically needed support system for more than 600 families over the past eight years,” said Miracles for Kids board chairman, Kenneth Gerdau. “It’s truly overwhelming to see such an outpouring of generosity from the community for so many families in crisis who have children with lifethreatening illnesses.” The most impactful moment of the evening came when the room stood in ovation following a profile video on 4-year-old cancer patient and Miracles for Kids’ grant recipient, Anaya, and her mother, Amanda, who were in the room. The Fund-a-Family fundraiser directly followed, led by auctioneer Jim Nye and assisted by Miracles for Kids children and families, where more than $270,000 was raised from 176 bidders. One hundred percent of the funds were donated to the organization’s Grant Program, which funds basic living expenses for families in need. Always an enthusiastic auctioneer, Jim Nye led a live auction that showcased luxury getaway offerings, unforgettable experience packages and stunning couture fashions, such as a six-night stay for two at the Four Seasons Resort Maldives, a VIP French Open experience, a day with boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard, a custom clothing package with diamond cufflinks, and a pure bred, Yellow Labrador Retriever puppy with lifetime obedience classes. This year, Miracles for Kids offered electronic bidding technology through Bid Pal for the silent auction making the event almost entirely electronic. Guests bid on items ranging from luxury hotel packages to unique cases of wine. There was also an Opportunity Drawing for the “Circles” Bracelet donated by famed jewelry designer Martin Katz valued at $27,500. Miracles for Kids supporter Sugar Ray Leonard attended and took the stage during the Live Auction, auctioning a full day at his private home, raising the charity $14,000. During the Fund-a-Family portion earlier in the evening, his wife Bernadette gave an impromptu speech celebrating the charity’s cause and its impact on her personally, and donated an additional $10,000 to Fund-a-Family. Another memorable moment of the evening was when Javier Sosa Jr., the son of Javier Sosa, Sr. and founder of Javier’s Cantina & Grill, accepted the Miracle Maker award for his family’s decade long personal and professional support of the organization and the families it serves. “We can’t thank our generous sponsors enough for making this event such a remarkable success,” said Miracles for Kids president and event chair, Autumn Strier. “With more than 50 event sponsors donating over $250,000, it shows how much and how many individuals and businesses in Southern Page 10

California really care and want to make a difference in the lives of families devastated by their child’s critical illness.” Special thanks to the lead sponsors of the evening which included: Exclusive wine sponsor Hundred Acre, who donated wine for the evening; the exclusive spirit sponsor of Board Member Tom Swanecamp with the evening, Nolet Spirits U.S.A.; and CHOC patients Sophia Colby and exclusive jewelry sponsor, Martin Katz, Bailey Spoonhower who donated the $27,500 “Circles” bracelet and $5,000 cuff links to the David August Wardrobe live auction item. Founded in 2002, Tustin-based Miracles for Kids’ mission is to improve the lives of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. The organization accomplishes this mission by providing families with ongoing financial and other support necessary to survive financially during their child’s illness, by funding research focused on eradicating life-threatening childhood diseases and by serving as an advocate for children and families who are fighting life-threatening illnesses. ATHLETE of the month Athlete’s Choice is pleased to announce our Athlete of the Month, Matt Costanzo Matt Costanzo is a dynamic young Varsity Lacrosse player for the Tesoro Titans. This energetic and highly enthusiastic Tesoro high school student is also a dedicated member of Athletes Choice in Rancho Santa Margarita. In addition to his academic and scholastic routine, Matt takes time for the intense strength and technique workouts with coach Nick Tintle of Athlete’s Choice. “I would have to say that Athletes Choice is a perfect name for this organization since the players themselves choose to train here, “says Costanzo. “I particularly enjoy training here because of its fun environment and because coach Tintle has really helped me improve my Lacrosse skills, and increase my fitness and strength levels immensely and all of that contributes to improving my game. Nick’s special knowledge and skills were apparent right away when he suggested special Lacrosse workouts to increase my strength, speed, and agility. I have only been working on these drills for the past few months but I can already feel the improvement. I’m excited to work even harder this upcoming spring season as I hope to play with Lacrosse in college and Athletes Choice has been the perfect counterpart to my training.” Athletes Choice is proud to honor Matt Costanzo as our Athlete of the Month .

Christmas 2012 Shopping GuideBaby Dolls and Accessories By Beth Callahan On the lookout for what is going to be hot in the world of Baby Dolls and accessories this Christmas 2012? If you are, than you have come to the right place! The dolls in this Baby Dolls holiday shopping guide vary from the amazing electronic versions to the basic baby doll and everything in-between. There are also a couple of baby doll accessories included as well. If you have anything baby related on your Christmas shopping list in 2012, make sure you get these hot baby doll items before they become scarce.
Baby Alive Baby All Gone by Hasbro- $25.00 3 years & up I have one daughter who is not really a fan of electronic baby dolls and one that loves them. The Baby Alive Baby All Gone doll has a few electronic actions that satisfies both my kids and I like it as well. My biggest complaint about the Baby Alive brand of dolls was that so many of them had to have food mix, drink mix, or diapers. The Baby Alive Baby All Gone allows kids to have the fun of “feeding” their baby and giving them something to drink without parents having to constantly purchase the mixes and diapers. When you push the spoon in the bowl, it activates a lever that slides a “spoonful” of bananas into view. Touching it to the lip of the baby doll makes it slide back into the spoon as if she took the bite. I do wish this action was a little quieter and smoother so it was not quite as noticeable. It also comes with a disappearing liquid sippy cup that refills when turned right side up. You can push her bracelet to have her say phrases that ask for food or drink and when something touches her tongue she makes eating or drinking sounds. Overall, this is a wonderfully priced
doll and something my daughters made or flimsy. The Nenuco Sleep love. I highly recommend this for you with Me Doll comes with a baby doll Christmas shopping list this year. that is dressed in pajamas, a pacifier, and a crib. The crib is well made and Mattel Doctor Mommy Doll- around even comes with a nightlight that $ 45.00 5 years & up plays music and changes color. My The Doctor Mommy Dolls from favorite thing about the crib is that it Mattel is a great Christmas gift for actually attaches easily to the side of the little girl who wants to grow up a toddler or twin bed like a co-sleeper and be a doctor. The Doctor Mommy cot would for real babies. The crib Doll comes with 8 accessories to go can also be used independently and with the doctor theme of play. The stands on its own as well. The crib stethoscope lights up and plays a soft itself is built well and can withstand heartbeat when the button is pushed. the rough play of younger kids. temperature or no temperature. The actual doll forehead lights up with a red light to further show a temperature. There is also a shot that allows you to give her medicine to make her feel better. These 3 accessories are pretty much the only ones that my daughters really cared about. The doll also includes a medicine dropper, bandaid, reflex hammer, tongue depressor, and name tag for mom. My kids favorite aspect of this doll is that when you tap her knee with the reflex hammer, it will kick. Overall, the doll has a limited scope of play when it comes to playing and I think it would appeal to the younger children. This doll is a great way to help your child feel more comfortable about going to the doctor or nurturing her interest in being a doctor. Famosa Nenuco Sleep with Me Doll $30.00 3 years & up The Nenuco Sleep with Me Doll from Nenuco is one of the best values in regards to dolls that I have seen in a long time. It seems when I am shopping for dolls that you have to pay a lot for any dolls that come with accessories outside of a baby bottle or small toy. If they do come with any accessories, they seem to be poorly
Hasbro Baby Alive Wanna Walk $ 55.00 3 years & up The Baby Alive Wanna Walk is a perfect Christmas gift for those kids that love electronic dolls. The Wanna Walk doll is ready to learn to walk and the child on your list has to help her learn. The doll says over 30 phrases that vary from asking for help up, telling you she wants to walk, or just laughing. The child can hold onto both hands and the doll will start to sway back and forth and actually walk forward. The doll can tell the difference between when your child is helping and when she is walking on her own. The doll will occasionally fall down and then ask for you to help her up. The only negative that I could say about this doll is that her design does limit the play to walking. She can not bend her legs to sit down very well and the phrases she says also limit game play. Again, that is something that could be a negative or a positive depending on the child.
hand and it makes the water bubble out of the nose. Kids can use of the included tissues out of the box to wipe their nose. You do have to press very gently or the water will shoot out of the nose instead of trickle. The doll is dressed in a cute winter outfit so it is perfect for a Christmas gift under the tree. My kids like the fact that you can add the sick baby aspect to their play or leave it out. That versatility is nice and keeps the dolls from becoming boring quickly. The Runny Nose doll is decently priced and a unique from most dolls that I have seen on shelves thus far. Baby Alive Princess Sips N’ Tinkles Doll $25.00 3 years & up This Baby Alive doll is the perfect gift for you little princess this Christmas. The doll comes with a sippy cup, one diaper, a little book, a tiara, and two outfits. This doll does wet in her diaper from the water that you give her through the sippy cup. The book is princess themed, the dresses are princess-type dresses, and the tiara finishes off the princess theme for the doll. The Baby Alive doll does require diapers to play and you will most likely have to purchase the additional pack of diapers sold separately. I recommend letting the diapers air dry so you can re-use them to cut down on the cost of the diapers. You can get quite a few uses out of them before the tape does not work anymore. I like the fact that the doll has the princess items that will appeal even more to those that love princesses. This doll can be a great addition to those girls that are playing queen and they can have their princess baby girl.
These are the baby doll’s that caught my eye from the Baby Doll Nenuco Runny Nose Doll $22.00 aisle for Christmas 2012. I think that 4 years & up any girl would be ecstatic to receive This baby doll is one that uses any of these dolls under their Christwater to spice up the game play. mas tree. Instead of having to deal with wet diapers like most water play baby dolls, this doll has water that lightly runs out of the nose to imitate a runny nose. The doll comes with a sippy cup and kids give the baby a drink. Then you lightly press on their The Newport News

Christmas Gift Ideas for a Grandmother that Has Everything By Crystal Ray Older people usually have just about everything that they could possibly want. If they need or want something in particular, they simply go out and buy it. A grandmother typically collects dozens of knickknacks and decorative presents over the years. Instead of adding to a massive collection, consider Christmas gift options that she can actually use. When a grandmother does not really need anything in particular, give her a Christmas present that will not sit around collecting dust. My grandmother had everything that she could possibly want, and I came up with options that I knew she would use.
Create a Pretty Basket of Edibles A grandmother that has everything would probably love a Christmas gift basket filled with her favorite fresh, canned and home baked foods. Unlike cologne that she might not like or unnecessary trinkets or candles, food is a necessity that will be enjoyed. Buy a pretty basket to hold the gift items, and after it is empty it can be used to stylishly store magazines, craft supplies or anything else that needs a home. bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-280-2832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site www.auction. com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 20120159902568. Available from vat19.com, the Inkless Metal Beta Pen features a special metal alloy tip. As you write, tiny amounts of this metal are deposited onto the page. If you have someone on your list that likes to play in the kitchen, this is their Christmas toy! It turn your kitchen into a food laboratory with this how-to kit that teaches you how to transform liquids, like honey, into jelly-like cubes, spherify chopped produce into flavor-packed beads, or even morph melted chocolate into a delicate powder or spaghetti-like strands. You’re only limited by your imagination! It’s the Molecular Gastronomy Kit available from modernistpantry.com. Very Cool!!!!
A beautiful little zen gift. The teacup has an unusual angled bottom that allows it to rest in two different positions. On one side is a screened compartment in which you place your favorite loose tea leaves. Pour hot water through the screen and allow it to steep. Once it’s done, simply tip the cup in the other direction, lifting the leaves up out of the water. The cup’s large size is perfect for cradling between your hands as you enjoy the warmth of your drink. This is just a wonderful, thoughtful gift. Available at uncommongoods.com
Oh, I’ve got one last thing from my overloaded geek brain. It may not be available before Christmas but, it’s worth watching for it’s release. It is a one of a kind camera/printer that you hold in your hand. Yes, it’s that small. You take a picture and then print it in full color by brushing this thing over any surface! Check out their site at printdreams.com. I’m checking on availability constantly cause I’ve got to have one of these. Should be available any time now at under $200.
