Lights, camera , holiday party With the holiday party season right around the corner, a growing camp of entertaining experts suggests approaching things a little less like Martha Stewart, and a little more like Steven Spielberg. Whether it’s a Halloween party for the kids, a Thanksgiving potluck, or an elegant Christmas dinner, entertaining pros know that “setting the scene” for a memorable event can make a significantly greater impact than debuting the next ambitious dessert recipe. “Inviting family and friends into your home is an intimate gesture,” says Ginny Bean, founder/publisher of Ginny’s catalog and Ginnys.com.”From the way the lighting is set, to the scented candles you choose and the music that’s playing, the best gift you can give your guests is to create a scene that makes them feel comfortable and welcome.” Bean offers the following checklist for transforming your home into a seamless scene for holiday entertaining, and creating a warm and inviting place for guests to interact. * Choose your space. Identify and arrange the area of your home where your scene will be set. When choosing a location, think about the season and theme of your event. If it’s a Halloween party and you’ve transformed your yard into a ghoulish garden of spooky spectacles, convene in a front room and open the curtains. On Thanksgiving, gather near the fireplace. If your home doesn’t have a fireplace, electric fireplaces provide surprisingly affordable ambiance and season-long enjoyment for your family. * Set up the room the day before the party, so you have plenty of time to make last-minute changes. Arrange furniture so guests can move around easily, clearing out extra furniture if necessarily. A general rule of thumb for mixers and cocktail parties is to have seating for 10 to 15 percent of your guests. If the space you choose is going to be crowded, use a single, preferably round, center table for hors d’oeuvres. If
your space is too big for the number of guests, use multiple small tables to create mini food stations, which will encourage guests to move throughout the room. * Dim the lights. Avoid unflattering overhead lights, and instead rely on table and floor lamps, and mood-enhancing candlelight. To get more light from candles, place them in clusters, and decorate with metallic accents that bounce light around and provide a festive holiday feel. Candles, of course, bring more to the party than a flattering light source. Seasonal scents like spiced pumpkin, cranberry clove and gingerbread maple play a dramatic sensory role in setting the scene. * Simplify the table decor. When creating centerpieces and decorative accents for your table and serving areas, less is often more. Seasonal fruit presented with nuts and berries, or evergreen branches and pinecones from your backyard, can make a lovely and elegant statement, at a fraction of the cost of fresh flowers. If you want to decorate with flowers, remember that one large arrangement makes a stronger impression than several small ones. For maximum impact, place flowers on the main food station or at the bar, where guests are guaranteed to see them. * Add thoughtful touches. Place cards casually incorporated into a nicely folded napkin, or placed between the tines of a fork, show how you have thought about each guest and who they might enjoy meeting. * Turn on the music. Music helps your guests relax and gets them in the proper party mood. Many stereo systems now have an mp3 player dock, so you can create a playlist for the entire evening and avoid the hassle of scrambling to change CDs. Choose tunes that match the occasion, but Bean suggests mixing traditional holiday songs with favorite party tunes in a ratio of one to three.
* Ready, set, relax. Newports 12 year old Sydney fernandez wins essay contest Sydney Fernandez, a 12 yr old from Newport Beach just won a “What are you Thankful for?” essay contest hosted by Newport Beach company, The Seegmiller Lawfirm, with a grand prize of a $1000 savings bond! On Friday, Dec 6 she was awarded a $1000 savings bond by West Seegmiller of the Seegmiller Law firm and honored by her principal, Eileen Ryan of Our Lady Queen of Angels, at a school assembly. There are number of wonderful things that I am grateful for, like the gift of life, being an American citizen, my family, my friends, access to a good education and much more. But, there is one thing I am the most grateful for. Dogs! Dogs of all types. I know you might be wondering why I am grateful for dogs, so here is the reason. Ever since I could remember, we’ve had a number of pets. But when I turned 10 months old we got a dog named Max. When I would have a bad day at school, he would always be there to comfort me. When I was 7 years old my brother Matthew passed away. I would not stop crying for weeks. I sat down on the couch and Max jumped on my lap. Every day when I came home Max Page 4

would always be there to comfort me. He followed me around until I felt better. I used to be a shy kid, and now my shell has been opened up because of my dog Max. He was always there for me no matter what. Through thick and thin, he has always been by my side until the end. He was a true best friend. Not only to me, but to every dog he met. So, when Max passed away this year, in honor of my little buddy, I was motivated to help the
dogs at the high kill shelters. I opened a charity called Puppy Love Charity so the dogs at the animal shelters can have homes just like Max did, and others could have a friend like Max was to me. 9.2 million Dogs a year die from not getting adopted. If he were still here today, he would befriend you. Why not give a dog a chance? Why not let the dog open up your world for you, as Max did for me? That is why I am grateful for dogs.

Finding the perfect gift for mom and dad or grandma and grandpa often seems impossible. If they’re like a lot of seniors, they’re fairly well settled and don’t have long wish lists. Plus, it seems that many of the hottest gift ideas are tech devices, certainly not something that would be of interest, right? Think again. Seniors aren’t as wary of technology as some might think. In April 2012, the Pew Internet and American Life Project reported that more than half of the 65 and over population were online and using email. The number is growing as seniors see the advantages of technology, from convenience to safety benefits. And that’s good news for kids and grandkids in desperate need of great gift ideas. Help the seniors in your life manage more from the comfort of their home. A new laptop or tablet can be a valuable tool for communicating with loved ones, managing finances and even taking care of some shopping. More than the gift itself, they’ll appreciate the time you take to show them the ropes with a video chat program or online bill pay services, not to mention getting them connected with family and friends on social media. If you’re in the market for a portable computer, there are numerous options. An all-purpose laptop typically offers a larger screen, which can be helpful if eyesight is an issue. At 4.5 to 8 pounds, they are ideal for the home, but can be carried to the corner coffee shop without much hassle. The Acer Aspire offers a 15.6-inch screen, great for viewing videos and images,
and weighs less than 6 pounds. Netbooks are smaller and more lightweight, good for some simple Web browsing and email, but often not robust enough to handle streaming video or multiple applications running simultaneously. Asus offers some high quality options, which are generally more budget-friendly than a laptop. Tablets have taken the market by storm, and new devices are being designed with seniors in mind. The Claris Companion blends in with a home’s decor, featuring a bamboo bezel, a stand and speakers built into the front. The 10-inch screen has big buttons, large text and a simple user interface, and it accommodates alerts set up by the senior or family to keep abreast of medication or other critical tasks. Provide seniors - and yourself - with the gift of a cellphone and peace of mind. Even if they don’t text or surf the Internet, your loved ones can benefit from having a convenient way to call for help in an emergency. Consumer Cellular carries senior-friendly phones, like the Doro PhoneEasy 618, with large and backlit buttons and hearing aid compatibility. No contract phone service with flexible plans means paying only as much as they use the phone. Of course, some seniors may be ready for smartphone features at their fingertips, including powerful cameras for capturing memories of the grandchildren. As with other products, consider a device with a larger screen size to avoid eye strain. Also, keep the
interface simple. Apple products tend to be fairly intuitive, so an iPhone may be a contender. The LG Escape from Consumer Cellular is another option, particularly if you want to give a phone loaded with advanced features. If shopping for avid readers, consider giving an e-reader and load some classics to get them started. The Amazon Kindle starts with a 6-inch screen, but larger sizes (up to 9.7 inches) are featured on certain models. Seniors can increase fonts to a comfortable size for reading, and they don’t need to spend a bundle on books as many libraries now lend e-books. Keeping connected with parents and grandparents may be the biggest gift of all this holiday season, so don’t shy away from the gifts that can make that happen. Seniors may surprise you with their tech savvy.

Free Fair Housing 101 Presentation Offered at Mariners Library
The Fair Housing Foundation will be holding a Fair Housing Presentation at Mariners Library, 1300 Irvine Ave. Newport Beach, from 3:00pm to 4:00pm on Sunday December 15th. This presentation is free and open to the public. Attendees will learn about the free services provided by the Fair Housing Foundation and about
the basic rights that tenants and landlords have. Anyone who is a new renter, looking to rent, or those with questions about rental housing, tenant/landlord issues, discrimination, repairs, rent increases, security deposits should attend. There will be a question/answer session at the end of the presentation. For additional

Handy Holiday Reminders Santa makes a list and checks it twice so he doesn’t forget anything. Do you? There are a few things that a lot of people forget during the holidays, according to a survey by RadioShack. So you might want to double check your own to-do list, just to be sure that everyone’s holiday can be jolly. Thank you notes – 44 percent of those surveyed forget to write a note of thanks for a gift. Stock up on thank you cards early – then put a “Thank You Day” on the family calendar between Christmas and New Year’s so that everyone can take care of this important task before too much time goes by. Batteries – 36 percent forget batteries for the gifts they buy. There’s nothing more frustrating than getting excited about a new present, then not being able to use it right away because there are no batteries. When you buy an electronic gift, make sure you put the right size batteries in the cart before you check out. Stock up on some of the more common sizes in case someone else forgets the batteries for your gift, too. Accessories for gifts – 31 percent tend to forget gift accessories, such as carrying cases, battery chargers, headphones or cleaning kits. If you’re not sure what kind of accessories your gift should have, you can always include a gift card so that the recipient can buy just what they need later on. Hostess gifts – The holidays are filled with parties and special occasions, yet 29 percent don’t remember to bring a host or hostess gift with them. Keep a little stash of ready-to-go gifts such as gourmet cocoas or coffees, boxed chocolates or scented candles so you have something handy for even the most last-minute events. Receipts and return options – Sometimes, despite your best efforts, a gift just doesn’t work out, so you need to make it easy for the recipient to return it. If you’re one of the 70 percent who said they plan to do the majority of their holiday shopping in stores this year, be sure to ask for a gift receipt along with your regular receipt. If you’re one of the 26 percent who plans to do 50 percent or more of shopping online, find out what the site’s return policies are. Print up any documentation for the gift and make it available to the recipient should they need it. Taking care of these little things now will help make the holidays go more smoothly, and let you enjoy them even more.
Allergies are one gift you don’t want to share during the holidays The holidays are a time when the decorations come out of storage, a live tree is brought inside adorned with lights and tinsel, and holiday scents fill the air. While this sounds like a warm and homey-style holiday, it can also cause watery eyes, runny noses and sneezes. Read on to learn how you can bypass these problems and enjoy a festive holiday season. The outdoor allergy season may have ended with the frosty cold weather of fall, but it’s the kickoff to the indoor allergy season that affects millions of allergy sufferers and those with asthma. “The holidays can present a variety of challenges for asthma and allergy patients,” says Dr. Cliff Bassett, an ambassador for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). “Our environment changes in many ways during the holidays, from having new people in our homes to bringing in potential irritants like pine trees and dusty old holiday decorations.” AAFA offers some advice for helping minimize allergy and asthma triggers in your home this holiday season: * If you know the guests you’re inviting into your home have allergies or asthma, adjust your cleaning
program to help minimize irritants. Use products that reduce allergens on hard surfaces, but don’t contain harsh or potentially irritating chemicals. A vacuum with a HEPA filter can also reduce the chance of distributing dust into the air. And don’t forget to change your furnace filters as well. Use a high efficiency filter that can last up to 90 days. * Most people store holiday decorations in attics, basements or garages and they can pick up dust, mold and other irritants while in storage. Thoroughly clean stored decorations before using them in your home. If one or more of these irritants is a trigger for you, wear a mask while cleaning. When you’re done with the decorations this year, clean them again before you seal them in plastic bags and store them in airtight containers. * If you or a loved one suffers from a tree or pollen allergy, artificial trees can be a less irritating substitute, provided you opt for one that’s not coated with sprayed-on “snow.” If you will be using a live tree, you can reduce mold problems by thoroughly wiping the trunk with a solution of lukewarm water and diluted bleach (one part bleach to 20 parts water).
Before you bring the tree inside, use a leaf blower to remove pollen grains. * Everyone loves the smell of the holiday, but scented home accessories can be irritants. Limit the use of air fresheners like candles, oils and potpourri. If you really want to fill your home with a holiday aroma during a special occasion, try baking using naturally fragrant ingredients like vanilla, cinnamon or citrus. * A crackling fire can create a warm, festive mood for holiday gatherings. To minimize potential irritation, don’t use wood-burning stoves or fireplaces at all. If you use a gas fireplace, check vents and use secured doors, rather than screens, to reduce smoke entering the room.
* When giving a gift to someone with allergies or asthma, keep their potential triggers in mind. For example, some children with asthma may be irritated by the materials commonly used in stuffed animals. Look for products that do not have sensitizing or allergenic chemicals such as formaldehyde. You can also find a list of allergy and asthma-friendly products on the AAFA website, www. aafa.org/certified. The holidays are meant to be a time of joy and celebration. Take steps to minimize irritants in your home environment so everyone in your family and your guests can enjoy the season.

7 Time Grammy Winner Al Jarreau Performs Live on Breakfast with Gary and Kelly At Saddleback College’s McKinney Theater In Mission Viejo

Photo by Smooth Jazz Family On Saturday, November 23, 2013, Saddleback College’s radio station KSBR 88.5FM and the City of Mission Viejo presented seven-time Grammy Award winner Al Jarreau at the McKinney Theatre located on the campus of Saddleback College. Jarreau appeared on KSBR Radio’s “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly” radio on TV taping to a crowd of around 350 attendees. The three-hour broadcast was live on the radio. The television broadcast will air on the City of Mission Viejo’s MVTV Channel 30 Tuesday through Sunday evenings at 8:30 p.m. and also on Saddleback College’s SCTV Channel 39 Friday and Sunday mornings at 11:00 a.m. throughout the Cox Communication cable system in South Orange County. During the one-hour interview, Jarreau told stories of his career, how he started in San Francisco teaming up with Jazz great George Duke, making his first album, and his love of music. He especially talked to the students in the crowd encouraging them to learn all they can and experience other forms
of music and inspiring them to live their dreams. Jarreau also wowed the crowd singing five songs and giving the audience a peek into his music-making “scat” abilities with Larry Williams accompanying him on piano. Williams has been with Jarreau for more than 30 years, and has played with George Benson, Herbie Hancock, Patti Austin, Paul McCartney, Michael Buble, Michael Jackson and Sheila E. After the show, Jarreau stayed 90 minutes signing autographs and posing for photos with guests who waited in line; talking to each person and making that connection with those who love his music. There was also KSBR merchandise for sale outside the McKinney Theatre along with a big screen TV for the live broadcast as well as coffee and muffins provided by “It’s a Grind” in Mission Viejo. Around 40 volunteers and staff made the event possible. Other guests appearing on Breakfast with Gary and Kelly that morning were Bart McHenry, Dean of Fine Arts and Media Technology for Saddleback College and Mission
Viejo Mayor Rhonda Reardon. McHenry talked about the different programs available for students of the Fine Arts Division from music to theatre while Reardon shared with the audience her charitable program that helps keeps children and teens away from prescription drugs. Breakfast with Gary and Kelly will welcome next month saxophonist Eric Marienthal who is one of the most respected and versatile musical talents on the scene today. Beckstrands 10th Anniversary Gala Raises $1.81 Million Celebrity Lisa Rinna with longtime supporters Holly and Dave Wilson Photos by Carla Rhea and Tony Lattimore Celebrating their 10th anniversary, Beckstrand Cancer Associations legendary Diamond and Pearl Ball, held at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel for an intimate crowd of 300 had only the nonprofits most cherished supporters in attendance. The gala realized an amazing $1.81 million in net proceeds, which will enable the Beckstrand Cancer Association to continue to help cancer patients and their families through trying circumstances during their cancer journeys. Co-hosting the elegant black-tie affair once again was Eva La Rue, the Associations National Spokesperson and well known television actress, with Beckstrands President/CEO Lil Spitzer. Beckstrand program recipient and recent cancer survivor Bryan Fazio touched hearts with his story of facing numerous recurrences of Hodgkins Lymphoma in his early 20s and, in the face of a daunting prognosis time and time again, stayed on active duty in the Navy for two years and earned his MBA degree. When he told guests that following his three-year cancer battle, he was cancer-free, the entire room rose to their feet in applause. Lauding Beckstrand, who paid his familys mortgage for seven months when they were about to lose their home, Fazio Dave Olsen and Daniela Ruah with Eva La Rue and Joe Cappuccio said, “During my fight, Beckstrand was there and when I graduated, they celebrated my victory with me”. Celebrated longtime Beckstrand supporters Mike and Jan Salta who are known for their generous and caring hearts, have supported the mission and programs of Beckstrand for the past decade, playing a pivotal role in the development and long-term execution of patient-focused assistance throughout the local cancer community. The Saltas $500,000 gala gift, announced later in the evening, showed their generous spirit. Newport Beach-based Lugano Diamonds, Presenting Sponsor three years running, provided the piece de resistance in the live auction a stunning 10.02-carat Ceylon sapphire. The rare, unmounted gem offered the winner the opportunity to design the setting with $5,000 towards that end, thanks to Lugano President and Design Director Moti Ferder, a Beckstrand board member. Ferder sweetened the pot by adding two oval matching five-carat sapphires, and it sold to longtime supporters Holly and Dave Wilson for $125,000. In a remarkable gesture, an anonymous donor offered to match the final bid, bringing the total amount raised by Lugano Diamonds Ceylon Sapphire to $250,000. Spitzer recognized several individuals who have been involved with the ball for the entire 10 years the first honoree, Dr. Simon Tchekmedyian; the original gala chair, Kirsten Prosser; the auctioneer, Mark Schenfeld, and gala Bold and the Beautiful’s Don Presenting Sponsor Lugano committee member Stuart Winston, who introduced Beckstrand to its first presenting sponsor, Bulgari, and later to Lugano Diamonds. Diamont and Cindy Ambuehl Diamond’s Moti and Idit Ferder Five couples were recognized for their amazing support, without whom we would not be where we are today, Spitzer said. They included Dave & Holly Wilson, AJ and Joni D’Amato, John & Patty Collins (Patty is Beckstrands board chairman), Keith and Mara Murray, and Blaine and Renetta Caya. Each lady was given a custom-designed gift from Lugano Diamonds a white gold initial necklace with a .30cts diamond encrusted butterfly, Beckstrands logo. Luganos Ferder then presented a custom-designed 18k gold necklace with a 2.5-inch high initial J encrusted with 1.50 cts. of diamonds called the Legacy Piece to Jan Salta. Celebrities attending the anniversary gala included Lisa Rinna, the Bold and the Beautifuls Don Diamont and his wife Cindy, and NCIS: Los Angeles Daniela Ruah. Morisettes private performance featured songs from her critically acclaimed Jagged Little Pill album, as well as other hits such as Uninvited and Thank U. She toasted all the caregivers in the crowd, saying, I’ve done it too, so here’s to all of us. The Diamond & Pearl Ball represents a celebration of cancer survivorship, with proceeds from the ball used by Beckstrand Cancer Association to provide cancer patients with advocacy and direct financial assistance for critical survival needs, such as rent/mortgage, utilities, food, gas, transportation, Beckstrand’s President/CEO Lil Spitzer and 10th Anniversary Gala medical insurance, copayments, and prescriptions. Or images of teeming crowds in a shopping mall, every arm holding countless packages? Well ... it’s that time of year again! November and December are arguably the busiest months of the year for traveling and shopping. Millions of people descend on the nation’s airports and shopping centers looking to create that perfect holiday memory. With all the excitement surrounding this time of year, the last thing Americans should worry about is escalator and elevator safety while navigating through the crowds. But while you may be more focused on your holiday to-do’s, you need to remember some important safety tips about the elevators and escalators you are using. Safety innovations have come a long way in the last few decades and today’s elevators and escalators are safer than ever before. The National Elevator Industry, Inc. (NEII) is the expert in building transportation safety. NEII works to develop and promote updated
safety codes, encourage the adaptation of the latest safety technologies, and ensure passengers are informed on the safest riding procedures for elevators and escalators. However, even with all the advancements in safety technology, it’s worth keeping in mind that most accidents can be easily prevented by following simple elevator and escalator safety tips. Below are key guidelines proven to keep riders safe during the holiday season and any time throughout the year: When boarding and riding elevators: * Allow passengers exiting the elevator to clear before boarding * Watch your step - the elevator car may not be perfectly level with the floor * Stand clear of the doors - keep clothes and carry-ons away from the opening * Hold children and pets firmly * Leashed pets should be on the same side of the door as the passenger to prevent the door from closing on the leash * Passengers nearest to the doors should enter first when the car arrives * Push and hold the “door open” button if doors need to be held open, or ask someone to push the button for you * Never try to stop a closing door, wait for the next car * Once on board, quickly press the button for your floor and move to the back of the car to make room for other passengers * Hold the rail or stand against the wall, if available * Pay attention to the floor indications and announcements when provided * If the doors do not open when the elevator stops, push the “door open” button
If there is ever an emergency, remember that all elevators have several safety devices, one of which is brakes that will stop the car if it is not operating properly. If the elevator should ever stop between floors, do not panic. Follow these guidelines: * If the elevator should ever stop between floors, do not panic, there is plenty of air in the elevator * Never climb out of a stalled elevator * Use the “alarm” or “help” button, the telephone or the intercom to call for assistance * Above all, wait for qualified help to arrive and never try to leave an elevator that has not stopped normally * Emergency lighting will come on in the event of a power failure When entering escalators: * Watch the direction of the moving step and step on and off with extra care * Hold children firmly with one arm or hold child’s free hand * Hold small packages firmly in one hand, but always leave one hand available to hold the handrail * Grasp the handle as you step onto the moving step * Do not step onto an escalator going in the opposite direction * Do not take wheelchairs, electric scooters, strollers, hand carts, luggage carts or similar items on the escalator When riding and exiting escalators: * Keep loose clothing clear of steps and sides
* Wear closed-toed and hard-soled shoes, and avoid wearing footwear made of soft-resin or other rubbery materials * Stand clear and keep feet clear of the sides of the escalator * Face forward and keep firm grip on the handrail * Reposition your hand slowly if the handrail moves ahead or behind the steps * Don’t climb onto or ride the handrail * Do not let children sit on steps or stand too close to sides * Don’t hesitate and step off promptly * Make sure to step over the comb fingers; don’t let your feet slide off the end of the escalator * Immediately move clear of the escalator exit area; don’t stop to talk or look around since other passengers may be behind you Always remember, if there is an emergency, simply push one of the “stop” buttons located at the top or bottom landings of the escalator near the handrail or floor level.
