Things retailers do to make you love their stores - and spend more Holiday shopping can make you feel frantic, while you sprint from store to store, trying to find the right gift for everyone on your list. If you think you’re under pressure to achieve during the holidays, however, just image how the retailers feel; holiday season is often make-or-break for many of them. And they’ll go to great lengths to keep shoppers in stores, happily spending. From sweet-on-the-feet commercial flooring to interactive product displays that incorporate sound and video, stores use a variety of marketing tools to make you feel welcome, wanted, and generous during the holidays. As you’re scouting for deals this holiday season, keep your eyes open for these five “come-hither” tactics employed by retailers: * Fatigue-fighting flooring - As you scurry from store to store, you probably haven’t considered the toll that average store flooring takes on your feet. Concrete floors, covered by carpet, tile, or vinyl, are common in retail settings, and they can contribute to foot fatigue. Savvy retailers realize that if your feet hurt, you’re not likely to linger in one spot. From big department stores to mom-andpop gift shops, retailers have rediscovered the value of providing this service to customers. Free gift wrapping is a relatively low-cost service, but it’s hugely valuable - both to time-pressed customers who appreciate the convenience, and for retailers who are able to keep shoppers in-store a bit longer while wrapping takes place. * The way to a shopper’s heart - Another triedand-true holiday enticement is food and beverage. You might expect to find samples in a grocery store or wine shop, but enterprising retailers know refreshments are welcome, regardless of what product they’re selling. During the holidays, clothing stores to hardware shops find their way into consumers’ hearts via their stomachs, serving a variety of treats that range from specialty candies available for sale in the store to holiday cookies, cider, or hot chocolate. * Y’all come back now - No matter how delightful your shopping experience, eventually you’re going
to leave the store. Smart retailers use a variety of tactics to encourage you to return another day from handing out coupons for future discounts at the cash register when you check out, to “greeters” who also bid you a fond farewell on your way out the door. Marketers know that if they can leave you with a positive feeling and a reason to return, you’re much more likely to shop in their store again. Of course, retailers have many ways to draw consumers into their stores. And as the holidays arrive, they’ll be adding incentives like these to ensure shoppers enjoy their time in stores more and hopefully spend more because of it.

Makes 36 servings 2 pounds white baking chocolate, coarsely chopped 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/4 teaspoon McCormick® Pure Peppermint Extract 4 drops McCormick® Red Food Color 18 large marshmallows, halved crosswise
36 lollipop sticks 1. Line 9-inch square baking pan with foil. Spray foil with no stick cooking spray. Place chopped chocolate in large bowl. Set aside. 2. Bring sweetened condensed milk and cream to simmer in medium saucepan on medium heat, stirring frequently with wire whisk. Pour over chopped chocolate. Let stand 1 minute. Whisk until chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth. Stir in peppermint extract. Remove 3/4 cup chocolate mixture. Tint chocolate mixture pink with red food color. 3. Pour remaining (plain) chocolate mixture to prepared pan. Drop tinted chocolate mixture by tablespoons
over chocolate mixture in pan. Swirl with knife for marble effect. 4. Refrigerate 4 hours or overnight until firm. Cut into 36 squares. (May be made ahead. Store chocolate mixture, tightly covered, in pan in refrigerator up to 2 weeks. Bring to room temperature before cutting into squares.) 5. To assemble chocolate on a stick, thread a marshmallow half and a chocolate square onto each lollipop stick. Wrap each hot chocolate on a stick in plastic wrap or small cellophane bag. (May be assembled up to 2 days ahead.) 6. To serve, stir hot chocolate on a stick into 8 ounces hot milk.

Buying new electronics this season? Don’t trash the old ones! By Steve Skurnac Electronics are once again dominating holiday shopping lists this season. In fact, analysts with the Consumer Electronics Association predict shoppers will spend six percent more on electronics this year compared to last – or about $250 per consumer. And for every new laptop, tablet, phone, TV, gaming system and scores of other gadgets, an outdated device likely will be replaced. For those old electronics, the question is, “Now what?” First off, do not throw replaced electronics in the trash. Electronic devices are comprised of a range of toxic components that can be harmful to human health and the environment if discarded in the same waste stream as the rest of your household garbage. Trashed electronics, or “e-waste,” contain heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium, which can leach out of landfills and into groundwater or nearby waterways. The good news is that there are several alternatives for disposing of your e-waste, including reuse and recycling. One ideal method that is in keeping with the holiday spirit is to find a local community electronics recycling fundraiser to properly dispose of your outdated electronics while helping to raise funds for a local organization.
With the current economic climate most nonprofits, schools and other organizations are experiencing harder times. Not only will recycling benefit an organization in need, but the environment as well by diverting the e-waste from the landfill. Visit us.simsrecycling.com/events or contact your favorite nonprofit or other charitable organization to find an event near you. Another option is to look into electronics take-back programs. Many electronics retailers, like Best Buy or Staples, will accept your e-waste for free or a small handling fee, regardless of brand or condition. Several manufacturers, too, will take back retired products, although these take-back programs vary in terms of fees and conditions. A quick internet search of your local electronics retailer or manufacturers’ recycling policy will provide instructions for their take-back process. Many cities’ waste management divisions also have electronics recycling programs, though opportunities differ in size and scope. Some municipalities have designated e-waste collection sites, while others might host periodic events to collect e-waste. Typically municipalities contract with third-party e-waste recyclers that process the collected material on behalf of the city.
Check your city’s website to learn about opportunities to drop off your e-waste or have it collected. Finally, consumers should look to see if e-waste recycling companies, such as those that contract with cities, have a facility nearby. These companies usually contract with organizations and businesses to handle large volumes of e-waste, but many welcome materials directly from individuals. Depending on the company, some accept electronics at their local facility at any time, some have designated days for public dropoff and others host periodic collection events with local partners. Unfortunately, however, there are some bad seeds in the e-waste recycling industry. Individuals, municipalities and businesses should take several important steps before selecting a recycler, thereby ensuring their e-waste is properly managed. For example, make sure the recycler is either Responsible Recycler (R2) or e-Stewards certified, which is one indicator that the recycler is adhering to environmental best practices. Also, even if you think your electronic device has been cleared of personal data, be sure the recycler offers data destruction compliant with the National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NIST) to make certain all data is wiped clean. Lastly, ask with whom a recycler does business. Some recyclers don’t actually handle the recycling of equipment and only collect the material for recycling. Not knowing exactly where your electronics are being recycled could put you—and the environment—at risk. The best recyclers are those that “own the lifecycle,” offering a complete range of remarketing and recycling services internally, thereby eliminating reliance on subcontractors, and thus improving accountability and security. This holiday season when you are making room for your new electronic devices, remember there are plenty of homes for your old ones, but the garbage is not one of them.

Ghirardelli Dessert Cups Ingredients: 4 cups Ghirardelli Dark Melting Wafers 8 small water balloons For mousse: 8 ounces Ghirardelli Classic White Baking Chips 4 tablespoons orange liqueur
2 tablespoons water 1 1/4 cups heavy cream 2 egg whites Directions: In a double boiler over hot water, melt 2 cups of wafers. Cool about 5 minutes. Inflate balloons to 4 inches in diameter and tie ends in a knot. Holding balloons by the knot, dip into melted wafers, tipping to cover balloon halfway up. Place balloon, knotted side up, on wax paper-lined baking sheet, holding balloon in place until it starts to set. Repeat with remaining balloons to make 8 cups. Place in freezer for 5 minutes. Use the same day. Fill cups with ice cream, sorbet, mousse or fresh fruit such as raspberries or strawberries. For mousse: In double boiler over hot water, melt white chips with liqueur and water; stir gently to blend. Cool until melted
white chips mixture no longer feels warm to the touch. In large bowl with electric mixer, beat cream until soft peaks form. Fold cream into melted white chip mixture. In large bowl with clean mixer, whisk egg whites until soft peaks form. With rubber spatula, fold egg whites into white chips mixture. Divide mousse among 6 dessert bowls or glasses. Chill at least 1 hour. Makes 8 servings.

CAN YOU STAND STILL? PAGEANT OF THE MASTERS CASTING CALL 2014 Ever wonder what it would be like to step into a famous piece of art? If you can stand still for 90 seconds, you could experience just that by volunteering for the renowned Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach - “where art comes to life!” In preparation of the 2014 show, The Art Detective, the Pageant is looking for men, women and children to volunteer. People of all sizes and ages are needed to be cast members in the world’s most famous presentation of tableaux vivants. Casting call will be held at the Irvine Bowl Park (650 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach, CA) during the following times:
Saturday, January 4 from 7pm– 9pm Sunday, January 5 from 2pm-5pm Thursday, January 9 from 7pm– 9pm Next summer’s performances of the Pageant of the Masters will run nightly at 8:30pm from July 9 to August 30, 2014. Additionally, by volunteering for the Pageant, students can earn credit towards community service requirements.

Easy to Make Decadent Christmas Desserts: Grand Marnier Souffle And Fudge Pie Easy to make decadent Christmas desserts just may make your traditional Christmas feast new and exciting this year. Trying not to make the same holiday desserts every holiday can be a challenge. This year try a few new recipes, and make some of the easy to make decadent Christmas desserts ever. Decadent does not necessarily have to mean calories; however there are times when you should be able to moderately enjoy the things you love including several favorite easy to make decadent Christmas desserts. One of the favorite seasonal favorite decadent Christmas desserts served during the holidays is the Grand Marnier Soufflé. There are several variations to the recipe, as people choose to add other ingredients based on individual taste. The original recipe for this Grand Marnier Soufflé

is one made years ago from a recipe from one of the many cookbooks from the Food and Wine Collections (1988). Of the many favorite decadent Christmas desserts made annually, the Grand Marnier Soufflé has always been a big hit among the easy to make decadent Christmas desserts. To make the Grand Marnier Soufflé, which is a favorite easy to make decadent Christmas dessert you will need ¼ cup of sugar, 3 egg yolks, 3 tablespoons of all purpose flour, 1 cup of hot milk, the grated zest from one orange, ¼ cup Grand Marnier (or to taste), ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract, and 4 egg whites. Preheat the oven to 475 and butter and soufflé dish that is at least 2 ½ inches deep. You will then sprinkle sugar over the butter and shake out the excess. Refrigerate your soufflé dish for the time being. Combine the sugar and egg yolks and whisk until smooth, then whisk in the hot milk. Cook over moderate heat bringing to a boil until thick. Reduce the heat but continue to stir until the mixture thins at which point you will remove from heat, add the orange zest, vanilla, and Grand Marnier. In a small bowl, you will beat the

egg whites for 2 minutes. Take the Grand Marnier pastry mixture and fold in approximately 1/3 of the egg whites and whisk until smooth. The remaining egg whites will be folded in with a rubber spatula. You are now ready to pour the completed mixture into the refrigerated soufflé dish and place in the oven. The heat should be reduced to 425 before placing in the oven. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes or until golden brown. Serve immediately. Whip cream topping is optional. This easy to make decadent Christmas dessert will go over well with your guests. The Fudge Pie is also an easy to make decadent Christmas dessert that all chocolate lovers enjoy. Ingredients include 4 ounces of butter, 2 ounces of unsweetened chocolate, 2ggs, 1 cup of sugar, 2 teaspoons of real vanilla (you may substitute vanilla extract), ¼ teaspoon of salt, 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour, and an easy to use prebaked pie crust. Preheat the over to 350 degrees. Combine chocolate and butter in a small pan and cook over low heat stirring constantly until smooth. Set aside and allow to cool. In a separate bowl whisk the sugar, flour, salt, eggs, and vanilla and beat
until smooth, after which you will mix in the melted chocolate mixture stirring until smooth. Pour the mixture into the pie shell and bake for 35 minutes or until the center is solid. The Fudge Pie is great served with a dollop of whipped cream. Add your own personal touch to taste with this decadent dessert such as adding pecans to the mixture. The original recipe for this easy to make decadent Christmas dessert is also part of the many excellent desserts from the Food and Wine Collection

With family ties to the organizations graduate speaker, Dr. Drews presentation was both emotional and educational covering all aspects of human trauma including numerous stats and statistics tied to domestic violence. Estimated net proceeds of over $250,000 will support Human Options mission to provide a safe haven and life-changing programs to help abused women, their children and families rebuild their lives and work with the community to break the cycle of domestic violence. Attendees were welcomed by husband and wife co-chairs Moujan and Todd Walkow followed by comments from Human Options CEO and co-founder Vivian Clecak. The Human Options graduate speaker shared the podium with her 16 year-old daughter who she claims was the major factor in leaving an abusive husband/father several years ago. An added connection was that Dr. Drew Incoming Board Chair Nancy Dahan with Human Options Chief Development and the speaker grew up in the same Southern California community and Officer Darla Olson and current Board Chair Artyn Gardner remain friends to this day. Radio and television personality, Drew Pinsky, M.D., is board-certified physician in internal and addiction medicine and assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the Keck USC School of Medicine. His thought provoking presentation was followed by a question and answer period which furthered topical ideas and discussion. The fall-themed luncheon included opportunity drawings for a $500 shopping spree to South Coast Plaza with one-year valet parking as well as a one-night stay at Westin South Coast Plaza with vouchers to theatre performances at South Coast Repertory. Major event underwriters included the Jaffe Family Foundation and Karen & Scott Green. The mission of Human Options is to provide safe haven and life changing programs to help abused women, their children and families rebuild their lives, while working with the community to break the cycle of domestic violence. Now in its 32nd year, Human Options provides a full continuum of services to stop the violence from prevention and early intervention programs to emergency shelter and long-term transitional housing.
