FESTIVAL OF ART FOUNDATION FUNDING GRANTS AVAILABLE The FOA Foundation is pleased to announce that applications are now available for 2019 Art Grants. Nonprofit organizations that have programs that promote fine arts in and about the City of Laguna Beach may apply. Grant applications are available online at www.LagunaFestivalofArts. org. Submission deadline is February 15, 2019. “The Foundation board looks forward to reviewing your organization’s grant application this year,” said FOA Foundation President Scott Moore. “We’re proud to be able to help fund the many art-related non-profits in the Laguna Beach community, emphasizing the enrichment of our children and young adults in all disciplines of art.” For more information on the grant application process, please contact Scott Moore at (949) 494-9680 or email foundation@foapom.com. A B O U T T H E F O U N D AT I O N In 1989, the Festival of Arts with a $1.5 million donation established the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts Foundation, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation, to guarantee annual financial support for the arts in Laguna Beach.
The FOA Foundation, co-founded by John Rayment and David Young, was designed to hold these funds in a permanent endowment. The earnings and income from this endowment would be distributed annually in the form of scholarships to graduates of Laguna Beach High School and as grants to nonprofit art organizations
and educational institutions in and about the city of Laguna Beach. The FOA Foundation operates independently from the Festival of Arts. In 2007, the Festival of Arts assumed the financial responsibility of the art scholarships, enabling The FOA Foundation to focus on its grant program for
local non-profit art organizations. The FOA Foundation is comprised of a five-member board of trustees who oversees and administers the program including Scott Moore (president), John Campbell (vice president) Bob Earl (treasurer), Jacquie Moffett (secretary), and Kathy Jones (board member).
FINE HAND CRAFTED GAME TABLES & FURNITURE “The first time I saw Sean Woolsey’s ping pong table it was in his studio and I was struck by the craftsmanship and artistry. I feel the same way two years later. It is absolutely beautiful. The photos on his website don’t do it justice.” Fred Crim, Huntington Beach, CA At Sean Woolsey Studio we know that the only way to build really fine furniture is to use time-proven wood crafting techniques. Yet we use design technology and lasting coatings, glues, and other products of the 21st century. The creative process melds two eras yielding exquisite, select furnishings for home or office. Our standard is to not take short cuts used in mass production. We craft individual furniture pieces and game tables in the detail focused way of the past masters who have left a legacy. While a picture may be worth a thousand words there is nothing like seeing our pieces in person. Once you do, we believe it will be apparent there is a marked difference in quality and craftsmanship in a piece from Sean Woolsey Studio. So if you are considering acquiring something new and special to add to your home or office we welcome you to come see for yourself. You will walk away with a new appreciation of true craftsmanship.

RED SOX OWNER LISTS HOUSE FOR $25 MILLION
John W. Henry, owner of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Globe and Liverpool Football Club, has just listed his waterfront mansion for $25 million. A self-made billionaire, John went from a college-dropout, farmer’s son to meteoric rise to billionaire by mathematically figuring out how commodities rose and fell by working with soybean sales on his father’s Arkansas farm. The basis of his success formula was relying strictly on mathematics, completely void of the human element. In 1981, he started his own commodities trading firm, J.W. Henry & Co., which made his fortune. Always a sports fan, John bought the minor league baseball team Tucson Toros in 1989, partial interest in the New York Yankees in 1991 and sole owner of the Florida Marlins in 1999. He hit the big time in 2002 when he purchased the Boston Red Sox for $380 million soon helping guide them out of an 86-year drought to win the 2004, 2007, 2013 and 2018 World Series titles. During these years, he also bought and restored Fenway Park, became majority owner of England’s Liverpool Football Club, secured a 50% share in a NASCAR racing team, bought The Boston Globe and helped launch a race-car, driving-simulator program iRacing.

com. With a lifetime of success on almost everything John Henry touches including a current value of about $3 billion for the Red Sox, it’s not surprising that he created one of the most stunning homes in Florida. As a new resident of Florida with his second commodities office in Boca Raton, John purchased a 6.3 acre parcel of land in the exclusive 200-acre gated community of Le Lac - only five miles from the center of downtown. A fan of Japanese design, he incorporated it into the plans for his new home which the family named “The House of Peace.” The home was completed in 1995 with large open spaces, 40-foot ceilings, skylights and walls of glass on the main floor overlooking the calm waters of the lake front. Crisp architectural lines, white walls and large windows throughout create a sunny, calming, cheerful atmosphere. All furnishings were designed specifically for the Henry family. The house measures 41,000 square feet with 27,832 square feet of climate-controlled indoor living space containing seven bedrooms and 19 baths. Features include a cherry-paneled library, an indoor-outdoor pizza room with dining area and wood-burning pizza oven, a theater with concession stand, a

state-of-the-art recording studio, and an underground 1,000-bottle wine cellar with its own generator to keep the wine at 53 degrees should there be a temporary power outage. One of the most notable features is the memorabilia and sports-bar room built for Henry’s collection of sports trophies. The guest wing contains a kitchenette, playroom and a living room with ping-pong table. Outside under swaying palms, recreation includes a swimming pool, cabana, outdoor kitchen, and clay tennis court.
The custom-designed mansion of sports magnate John W. Henry is now for sale in Boca Raton, Florida priced at $25 million. Boca is one of the East Coast’s most upscale towns on the Atlantic Ocean with expensive shopping, restaurants, Florida luxury condominiums and homes. ENVIRONMENTAL NATURE CENTER PRESENTS NEW AND IMPROVED RAPTOROLOGY ASSEMBLY PROGRAM The Environmental Nature Center’s education team refurbished an old program about birds of prey and will start booking this new and improved assembly-style program immediately. This program, called ‘Raptorology’, introduces students and community members to live birds of prey, which have been rehabilitated and trained to be used as animal ambassadors. “We are so pleased to be working in collaboration with the OC Bird of Prey Center, who has made their rehabilitated birds accessible to us for these educational experiences,” said Community Outreach Coordinator Mindy Schwartz. “We have hired one of OCBPC’s specially trained raptor handlers, Harmonie Wooley, and she is a wonderful addition to our education team.” In this hour-long program, students will meet 3-4 live birds of prey that are native to Southern California. Harmonie will share information about what makes these birds so special – including their adaptations for hunting, flying, and digesting prey. Additionally, students will have a unique opportunity to touch skulls, talons, and feathers from birds of prey. Harmonie will scaffold the information presented to be appropriate for different grade levels, and all students will leave with an understanding of why these birds of prey are such a vital component of our ecosystem. “We are confident that our Raptorology program will flow seamlessly with the rest of our NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards)-aligned curriculum, and provide students the opportunity to ask informed questions,” said Harmonie Wooley. “Meeting raptors up close can be a truly captivating and transformative experience for people – especially for those kids that live in more urban areas, where they might not normally get this
experience.” This program will be an addition to the ENC’s long-standing Traveling Naturalist program, which facilitates in-school field trips at schools all over Orange County. While approximately 80% of these programs do take place in schools, the remaining 20% take place at community organizations such as libraries, churches, senior centers, and festivals. ALEX PADILLA TAKES OATH OF OFFICE FOR SECOND TERM AS CALIFORNIA SECRETARY OF STATE Alex Padilla took the oath of office today for his second term as California Secretary of State at the Secretary of State Office in Sacramento. Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court Tani CantilSakauye administered the oath. Padilla was re-elected in November with 64.5% of the vote. He received 7,909,521 votes—the most votes any Latino has received in a statewide election in US History. The following are Secretary Padilla’s remarks, as prepared, following his oath of office: My fellow Californians, thank you for your support and for the honor of being able to serve as your Secretary of State for another term. Four years ago, when I was first sworn in as Secretary of State, I stood on this very stage and pledged to work tirelessly to bring more Californians into the democratic process. We’ve made it easier to do business in California. We simplified filings for hundreds of thousands of businesses thanks to our new bizfile California portal. Less paper, less delays. We’re modernizing the State Archives through digitization initiatives that are making our state’s history more accessible to all Californians. I’m particularly proud of our awardwinning partnership with the Google Cultural Institute which has brought curated exhibits online to showcase California history in a way that is easier to access and enjoy.
And we are on track to replace CalACCESS by the end of 2019, to make it easier for the public and the press to better track the flow of money in state politics. But as we look to the future, we still have a lot of work to do. For starters, our next statewide Election Day is only 14 months away. We have taken the bold, but important step of moving up our Presidential Primary Election to the first Tuesday of March. California is the most populous state and the most diverse state in the nation. And we represent the largest economy of any state in the nation. Californians deserve a real say in determining the nominees for President of the United States, and an earlier primary provides that opportunity. And you better believe that as we approach the 2020 elections, we will work to further increase voter registration, and further increase access to the ballot. And speaking of 2020, I will also work to ensure that every Californian is counted in the 2020 Census. Our fight is well underway against the Trump administration and their efforts to undermine our decennial national population count. The census has been understaffed and underfunded. While the 2020 Census will be the first digital census in history, a digital divide still persists in California and throughout the United States.
The Trump administration plans to question the citizenship of every person in America in a thinly veiled attempt to discourage diverse communities — like the many in California — from participating in the census. And in case your news source of choice hasn’t mentioned it, the Census Bureau is part of the government shutdown that has gone on for 17 days now with no end in sight. The Census serves many important purposes. It determines federal funding formulas for the next decade. At stake are billions of dollars for healthcare, education, and transportation. The decennial census data also drives reapportionment and redistricting. An under count in California jeopardizes our representation in Congress and our voting rights. I’m proud to support Attorney General Becerra’s lawsuit to have the citizenship question removed. And my office will leverage our statewide outreach and communication resources to educate all Californians about the importance of being counted. It is clear, we have much more work to do. And the challenges that lie ahead are great. We accept the ongoing challenge to ensure the security, accessibility, and inclusivity of our elections. We will continue to modernize our Business Programs Division and make it even easier to do business
Alex Padilla in California. We will shine a brighter light on money in state politics. We will increase public access to California’s complete history contained in the Archives. And we will step up to the monumental task of ensuring that every Californian counts in the 2020 Census. Our challenges may be great, but our resolve is even greater. I look forward to working with the great women and men at the Office of the Secretary of State and with all of you to meet our challenges head on and deliver for all Californians. I thank you all again for your support. May God Bless you. And may God Bless the great State of California.
COLD BREW COFFEE: HOW TO ENJOY THIS TOP 2019 FOOD TREND AT HOME
Cold brew coffee is popping up everywhere, poised to be a top food trend in the new year. You may have seen it on the menu of your favorite coffeehouse or in the refrigerated section of your local grocery store, but what exactly is cold brew coffee, and why are people raving about it? Cold brew 101 Cold brew coffee is commonly confused with iced coffee, but the name comes from how it’s brewed rather than how it’s served. Cold brew coffee is slowly steeped in cold water using coarsely ground coffee beans. While you can brew a pot of traditional hot coffee in a few minutes, cold brew takes hours - 12 or more - to achieve the signature result. When you taste a high-quality cup of cold brew coffee, the difference is apparent. Coffee made using the cold brew method has a smoother, naturally sweeter result that tastes less acidic than traditional hot-brewed
coffee. The reason for this is the solubility of the organic acids inherent in coffee are extracted at higher brewing temperatures. The organic acids (like citric, malic, formic, quinic and acetic) are a signature aspect of hot-brewed coffee’s flavor and aroma yet only dissolve in hot water. The cold brew method doesn’t extract the bright flavors associated with these acids but extracts the rich chocolate and caramel notes that result in the rich and smooth beverage with a difference that you can taste. Cold brew at home Cold brewing from scratch at home can be quite the task, but that doesn’t mean you must choose between expensive coffeehouse cold brew and the messy, time-consuming process of cold brewing at home. The solution: Java House(R) Authentic Cold Brew Coffee Dual-Use Liquid Pods can be enjoyed hot or cold at home. To enjoy hot, place a pod into a singleserve brewer with the tab facing up for a rich yet smooth cup of coffee. To enjoy cold, slowly peel open the pod, pour over ice and add water. For best results, use 8 oz. of water, whether enjoying hot or cold. The smooth, rich taste of cold brew can be savored by itself all year long. The caramel and chocolate notes extracted are characteristic features
of cold brew and not something you’ll naturally find using other coffee brewing methods. Become a home barista Feeling creative? You don’t need professional barista experience to craft a satisfying coffee creation. While delicious without anything added, Java House(R) Cold Brew is also a great base for many coffee recipes, whether you want to create something rich, sweet or a little bit spicy. For example, this recipe for Hot Salted Caramel Coffee will warm you up, no matter how low the temperatures dip outside. Hot Salted Caramel Coffee Servings: 1 Ingredients: 4 fluid ounces water 2 Java House(R) Cold Brew Liquid Pods 4 tablespoons whole milk 1 and 1/2 tablespoons salted caramel syrup 1 tablespoon vanilla syrup Whipped topping Caramel sauce to drizzle Coarse sea salt to sprinkle Directions: In a large mug, combine water, cold brew liquid pods, milk and both syrups. Stir well and microwave for 30 to 40 seconds. (Or combine in a saucepan over medium low heat for
4 to 8 minutes and pour into a large mug.) Top with whipped topping. Drizzle with caramel sauce. Sprinkle with sea salt. You can substitute almond milk or low-fat evaporated milk and low-fat whipped topping for the whole milk and whipped topping for a healthier alternative. To serve cold: In a tall glass, combine water, cold brew liquid pods, milk and both syrups. Stir well. Top with ice. Top with whipped topping. Drizzle with caramel sauce. Sprinkle with sea salt. Keep in mind, Java House(R) does not use any preservatives, coffee additives, coffee derivatives or reconstituted coffee. It’s just a great-tasting cold brew coffee that lets you become a home barista using four varieties: Colombian, Ethiopian, Sumatran and Decaf. Visit javahouse. com to learn more. -(BPT)

Newport Properties Australian Auction Process Hits US Real Estate Market Have you noticed the number of Auctions going on in Southern California lately? If you didn’t know any better, you might think we are back in 2008. But if you look closer, you’ll realize it’s different; the properties going to Auction are non-distressed. In the last 24 months, Harcourts has managed to create curiosity and excitement about a unique selling process that is empowering both buyer and seller alike. Harcourts, one of the largest real estate franchises in the world with offices in 10 different countries, has been refining residential real estate auctions for nearly 130 years.
“Our process doesn’t replace traditional sales, it simply enhances them by providing owners another option for selling their property,” says Director of Harcourts Auctions Ben Brady. For decades in the USA, the auction process has been associated with foreclosures and distressed properties. During that same period most realtors could only provide one option for helping their clients sell their homes. Our Aussie friends saw this as an opportunity when they brought Harcourts as well as the Harcourts Auction Platform to the USA.
How is it different than other auction platforms in the USA? 1. No buyer premium. 2. Don't have to wait for the auction date to offer on the home. More than 57%, sell prior to the live auction date. 3. Fully disclosed process: all reports, disclosures, inspections, termite report, request for repairs, etc. are done upfront increasing the success of closing to 90% vs. 70% as seen in traditional sales. 4. Fully financeable just like a traditional sale. 5. Attractive process for all buyers, especially owner occupiers. IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS TOTAL PROPERTIES LISTED PROPERTIES SOLD AVERAGE DAYS ON MARKET

IN FIRST ACT AS GOVERNOR, GAVIN NEWSOM TAKES ON COST OF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS & FIGHTS FOR HEALTH CARE FOR ALL In his first act as California’s 40th Governor, Governor Gavin Newsom announced a series of major, firstin-the-nation executive actions and budget proposals to lower prescription drug and health care costs for all California families and move California closer to the goal of health care for all. Governor Newsom’s health care proposals are a central pillar of his broader “California for All” agenda. As he laid out in his inaugural speech, the Governor believes that the California Dream should be accessible to everyone -- not just a privileged few. Over his first year in office, he will work with the Legislature and all levels of government to find bold and innovative solutions to confront the cost and affordability crisis that California families are facing. The rising costs of health care and prescription drugs are chief among those concerns, as California families continue to struggle with rising health care costs. Those buying on the individual market will see an average 9 percent rise in health care costs this year, according to Covered California. American families have seen their prescription drug costs nearly double since the year 2000, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, and prescription drug pricing is one of the largest drivers of rising health care costs. Just last week, a Reuters report found thirty drug makers that did business with the State of California planned to raise their prices in January. Governor Newsom’s health care proposal takes those costs head on. Today, Governor Newsom signed first-in-the-nation executive order that creates the nation’s biggest singlepurchaser system for drugs and will allow all Californians – including private employers -- to sit together at the bargaining table across from big drug companies when negotiating prescription drug prices. In his first budget, he will propose expanding financial help that makes it cheaper for families and individuals to buy health coverage and reinforce the Affordable Care Act after recent federal attacks. Governor Newsom’s proposal would also bring the state closer toward the goal of health care for all by making it the first state in history to expand Medi-Cal coverage to all eligible undocumented young adults. He also signed an executive order to establish a California Surgeon General who will be tasked with addressing the root causes of California health challenges and inequities. “No state has more at stake on the issue of health care. California must lead,” said Governor Newsom. “We will use our market power and our moral power to demand fairer prices for prescription drugs. And we will continue to move closer to ensuring health care for every Californian.” Governor Newsom signed the executive orders and letter and laid out his health care actions today on Facebook Live. As part of his California for All health care plan, the Governor proposes: Creating the largest-scale singlepurchaser system for prescription
drugs: Governor Newsom signed an executive order to fight the rising prices of prescription drugs by strengthening the state’s bargaining power when negotiating drug prices. Today, public and private purchasers of prescription drugs for Medi-Cal, California’s largest purchaser of pharmaceutical services, are fragmented, left to negotiate against drug companies alone. The negotiation for pricing and purchasing of prescription drugs under Medi-Cal will now be conducted by the Department of Health Care Services on behalf of all 13 million Medi-Cal beneficiaries, as opposed to only 2 million currently. Further, the executive order directs state agencies to purchase prescription drugs together, as opposed to negotiating with drug companies one by one; and charts the path to enable all Californians, including private purchasers, to join forces with public purchasers. These reforms will mean that instead of facing big drug companies alone, Californians -- including budgetconstrained government agencies and struggling small businesses -- can sit together at the bargaining table across from drug companies when negotiating for life-saving and life-preserving prescription drugs. By working together, we can effectively contain costs and make prescription drugs more affordable for all. Making California the first state to cover undocumented young adults through Medi-Cal: Two years ago, California took an important step toward health care for all by covering undocumented youth under the state’s Medi-Cal program. In his budget, Governor Newsom will propose California take another major step toward universal coverage, by extending Medi-Cal eligibility to undocumented young adults who otherwise meet the program’s eligibility requirements. It will make California the first state in the nation to cover young undocumented adults through a state Medicaid program. The Affordable Care Act allows most young adults to stay on their parents’ health plan until age 26. Undocumented young adults should not have to worry about losing their health coverage when they turn 19. Expanding Obamacare financial help for families & reinforcing the Affordable Care Act after federal attacks: After a series of federal government attacks on the Affordable Care Act, Governor Newsom announced that his first budget will reinforce the law and expand Obamacare subsidies that help individuals and families afford health care coverage. His budget proposes increasing the size of the subsidies for families who already receive it, and it would make California the first state to make subsidies available to middle income families. Right now, individuals earning more than $48,000 a year or a family of four earning more than $98,000 don’t qualify for financial help to afford their premiums. The Governor’s budget will provide financial assistance to individuals earning up to $72,840 and families of 4 earning up to $150,600. California
Gavin Newsom will be the first state in the nation to offer subsidies to individuals and families with income between 400 and 600 percent of the federal poverty level. To pay for increased financial help for families, the budget proposes fighting back against the federal government’s attempts to destroy the Affordable Care Act by reinstating the individual mandate at the state level. A UCLA study recently predicted that the rate of uninsured Californians would increase without state action to counteract the federal government’s move, a development that would increase health care premiums across the state even further -- even for families on private insurance. Calls on the federal government to empower California to truly innovate: Governor Newsom has long said California should be the national leader in health care innovation. However, instead of cultivating and rewarding good ideas, current federal law hinders truly transformative innovation, such as a single-payer health care system. Governor Newsom sent a letter today to President Trump and Congressional leaders calling on the federal government to lift these limitations and, instead, empower states like California to enact transformative change that would allow California to develop a single-payer health system to achieve universal coverage, contain costs, and promote quality and affordability. Establishing the California Surgeon General to focus on root causes: Governor Newsom signed an executive order to establish a California Surgeon General,
who will lead all Californians in addressing the root causes of serious health conditions, such as adverse childhood experiences and the social determinants of health. The overwhelming scientific consensus is that there are early signals and causes of many serious health conditions. The Surgeon General will marshal the insights and energy of medical professionals, public health experts, public servants, and everyday Californians to address health inequity as early as possible in all Californians’ lives. Governor Newsom signs firstin-the-nation executive order to create the largest single purchaser for prescription drugs and allow private employers to join the state in negotiating drug prices Governor Newsom’s first budget proposes that California move closer to health care for all by becoming the only state in the country to provide coverage to young undocumented adults through Medi-Cal Under Governor Newsom’s proposal, California would be the first state to expand the Affordable Care Act’s financial assistance to middle-income families, helping them afford health care premiums In letter to Congress and White House, Governor Newsom calls for federal legislative changes to allow states to innovate within their health care system including creating paths to single-payer Governor Newsom also signs an executive order to create a California Surgeon General

HERITAGE POINTE HOSTS “ONE NIGHT TO REMEMBER” Photos by Ann Chatillon Heritage Pointe, well-known for its unparalleled residential community providing Independent, Assisted Living, and Memory Care Services for seniors, hosted its Inaugural Community Concert “One Night To Remember” at City National Grove in Anaheim to rave reviews! Close to 250 guests were in attendance at this Concert, which was both musically inspiring and spiritually uplifting, hallmarks of both headlining performers, the well-known A Capella Group The Maccabeats, and singer-songwriter of acoustic pop music Todd Herzog. “Every year for our major fundraiser we endeavor to engage the entire Orange County community in the venue we select, hoping it will appeal to a broad spectrum of the community,” stated Mike Silverman, CEO of Heritage Pointe. The evening commenced with an elegant VIP Reception at 4:00 p.m., followed by the Community Concert and Dinner from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Students from Irvine Hebrew Day School were on hand to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and to sing Ha Tikvah, the National Anthem of Israel. By combining powerful songwriting with clear vocals that express the true measure of his lyrics, Todd Herzog is reminiscent of Jason Mraz, Michael Buble, Five for Fighting, and Bono. He has an uncanny ability to tell a story that is both profound and intensely personal to his listeners, while remaining approachable and easy listening. Todd writes acoustical pop music that feels intimate and immediate, leaving the listener with a sense that a certain song had been written just for them. As a surprise to guests, Herzog performed a special song he had written for the occasion entitled “L’dor Vador – Heritage Pointe,” with violin accompaniment performed by Heritage Pointe’s own Beth Slavin! The Maccabeats have also earned wide renowned for their exceptional storytelling. Originally a student vocal group at New York’s Yeshiva University, they now have performed all over the world. With a stage appearance that resembles a college yearbook from decades ago, their clean-cut presentation is as inviting as their infectious sense of humor, evident in their songwriting and parodies of many popular contemporary hits. Voted Best Retirement Facility/Independent Living in Orange County, and One of the Top Three Independent, Assisted Living and Memory Care Facilities in Orange County Best of Orange County 2018, Heritage Pointe is a nonprofit residential community for seniors in Mission Viejo, California. FAITH AND A DOUBLE EAGLE MAKE DEL FRISCO’S A WINNER
Del Frisco’s famed Double Eagle 45 day dry aged double boned Prime Ribeye steak is the signature selection on its menu. The 32 ounce is meant to be a shared plate at $140.
Del Frisco Double Eagle Steakhousehad a recent opening in San Diego and brought their top award winning wine director Faith Fulginiti to manage the acclaimed wine program. A dramatic dining delight has come to San Diego. It’s the first west coast location for Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, the nationally acclaimed restaurant with a tasty looking waterfront panoramic view in the Embarcadero District. Del Frisco’s brings sophisticated class, always welcome in “America’s Finest City.” It spotlights a big, bold menu spearheaded by prime beef, with flavors that expand the tasting experience. We’ll get to our menu selections further into the column. What attracted me was the nationally acclaimed wine selections, created by Wine Director Faith Fulginiti. You get instant evidence that this is not your father’s wine cellar, when you ascend a staircase of Italian marble steps with glass walls on either side, housing more than 7,000 bottles of temperature-controlled wine, to enter the dining room. This creates a wine display visible from almost every seat. I had experienced Del Frisco’s palate popping wine list when I was a frequent visitor to the Dallas downtown district where Del Frisco’s is the go-to dining spot for big cut steaks. At a family dinner, I was offered a bottle of Screaming Eagle Cabernet from the winery’s founding vintage, 2007, for $10,000. This wine is considered to be a leading edge brand for the “cult” status of Napa Valley Cabernets, and points to the depth of the wine program for Del Frisco’s. The San Diego location under
the management of Faith Fulginiti, has amassed 10,000 bottles with over 1,400 varietals. Fulginiti has two decades of hospitality experience. For the past 9 years, she was head bartender and sommelier at Del Frisco’s flagship restaurant in New York City and was instrumental in gaining a Wine Spectator Grand Award, the highest level distinction for a restaurant with a superior wine collection. We sat down with her recently and she expressed satisfaction with getting out of New York City. “We were serving about 1,200 diners a night, a tremendous accomplishment. San Diego is more a relaxed format and I’ve put a lot of love into the wine list. It’s my baby.” I asked her how the restaurant can manage such a large amount of choices. “We always have 2 sommeliers on staff to educate and guide our guests through the list. Do you like fruit forward, earthy, high acid, aged, full bodied? We carefully show them what they are can try. It’s meant to be a fun adventure and a journey. In the front of the book are featured selections that pair well with menu items. If a glass of wine will do, we have over 30 selections and we just added a 2006 Dom Perignon Champagne. Our bythe-glass program allows diners to try a brand before they buy a bottle. We have many of the great names in California wine, as well as Italy, France and Spain.
I’ve also chosen some Guadalupe Valley Baja names. Our goal is to cover all the wine countries in the world. We recently added wines from Lebanon and Greece. We have house wine with the Del Frisco’s brand. It’s a Cabernet Sauvignon made by the great Paul Hobbs of Sonoma and Napa Valley.” I asked Fulginiti what she enjoys when the work day is done. “When I relax after hours, it depends on my mood. It may be a fine glass of French champagne, but I have a love affair with Italian Amarone Valpolicella (a red blended wine from the Veneto region). It stirs my soul, a true gem” she exclaimed. Food menus have their own story. I usually stay with what I know so that brought me to Del’s Jumbo Crab Cake for the 1st course. It had a delicious Cajun Lobster cream sauce placed like frosting on a cake. Paired with it was a familiar wine, the 2017 Dr Loosen
German Riesling Blue Slate. A Burgundy Chablis graced the crispy bright Blue Cheese Lettuce Wedge The Iceberg Lettuce was chilled to perfection and crackled as it was bitten into. The same with the cherry tomatoes, bacon and Danish Blue Cheese dressing. Our shared main course, a Double Eagle 45 day dryaged double bone 32 ounce Prime Ribeye is an over-the-top culinary experience that is carved at the table to the diner’s exact proportions. This menu selection is $140. plus a wide choice of seasonal sides. The wine that is a perfect companion is the Del Frisco “house” 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon made by the legendary winemaker Paul Hobbs from Napa Valley and Sonoma. There are 17 Del Frisco locations nationwide open for lunch and dinner. Reservations on line at delfriscos.com or by calling 619-272-5060.

HISTORY OF THE GOLDEN GLOBES
The first awards presentation for distinguished achievements in the film industry granted by Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association - the precursor of today’s Hollywood Foreign Press Association - took place in early 1944 with an informal ceremony at 20th Century Fox. There, Jennifer Jones was awarded Best Actress honors for The Song of Bernadette, which also won for Best Film, while Paul Lukas took home Best Actor laurels for Watch on the Rhine. Awards were presented in the form of scrolls. The following year, the members of the association held a contest to find a design for a statuette that would best represent the overall aims of the organization. Marina Cisternas, president of the group in 1945-46, presented the idea of a shiny globe on a cylindrical pedestal, to represent the world. In conjunction with the Golden Globes presentation, the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association held its first gala social event in 1945 with a formal banquet at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Going My Way won for Best Picture, while Ingrid Bergman and Alexander Knox were named Best Actress and Best Actor for their performances in The Bells of St. Mary and President Wilson, respectively. There have been other important landmarks in the history of the Golden Globes. In 1951 the association decided to divide the best film, actor
and actress nominees into two categories -- drama, and musical or comedy -- so that no genre would be slighted. In 1952, the HFPA created the Cecil B. DeMille Award to recognize “outstanding contribution to the entertainment field.” The award’s first recipient was DeMille himself. Other unique awards that have been discontinued over the years were the World Film Favorite, from 1951 to 1980 and the Newcomer Award, which had several different names during its lifespan from 1948 to 1983. Timothy Hutton, Bette Midler and Diana Ross were among the distinguished Newcomers, and Steve McQueen, Doris Day and Barbra Streisand were some of the World Film Favorites. In 1956 the Golden Globes included some unique categories: The Trailblazer Award to Walt Disney (American story-telling), Dinah Shore (American song), Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz (American comedy). The latter paved the way for the inclusion of television categories alongside motion pictures, a tradition that remains to this day. In 1957 five TV shows received Golden Globes: Cheyenne (best American western); Mickey Mouse Club (best American children’s show); Matinee Theatre (best American daytime theatre); Playhouse 90 ( best nighttime theatre); This Is Your Life (best audience participation show). The current Foreign Language
Jennifer Jones category has its roots in the Samuel Goldwyn International award which distinguished non-US pictures from 1959 to 1964 - Greece’s Never on Sunday, Germany’s The Mark and Italy’s Divorce, Italian Style were some of the recipients of the Samuel Goldwyn Award. Some categories, however, did not make it to present day’s Globes. From 1948 to 1963 the Globes recognized achievements in cinematography. From 1951 on separate cinematography Globes were awarded to black and white and color pictures. The Longest Day, High Noon and On The Waterfront received the former, while Quo Vadis, Lawrence of Arabia and Brigadoon
were among the winner in the color category. Another category that was briefly active was the Golden Globe for Best Documentary, presented from 1973 to 1977 - Elvis on Tour and Walls of Fire were the two winners in 1973. In 2007 a new category was introduced: Best Animated Feature Film. The first year’s nominees were Cars, Happy Feet and Monster House, with Pixar’s Cars taking the Globe. Today, the Golden Globes recognize achievements in 25 categories; 14 in motion pictures and 11 in television. January 10, 2016 will mark the 73rd presentation of the Golden Globe Awards. www.HFPA.org
4 WAYS TO RECREATE YOUR ENTERTAINING SPACE
The holidays, the big game, New Year’s and everything in between: At this time of year there are plenty of reasons to invite family and friends to your home to entertain. In addition, there are also plenty of times - particularly on cold winter nights - when you just want to have a place you can go to get cozy, play a video game or watch a movie in peace. Either can be an appealing option, but do you have an entertaining space that fits the bill? One where you want to spend your free time? If the thought of your entertaining space has you sadly shaking your head no, the good news is there’s no reason you have to settle for a lessthan-ideal solution. Like the events you use it for, your space can change as needed. To help you make the most of your space for all of the group and individual events you have planned, follow these tips. * Control light. A common design tip for most spaces is to allow for lots of light. You may want that when everyone comes together to watch a game, but for those times when you want to watch a film or play a video game, a darker environment may be more immersive. To keep total control of the light in your entertaining area, invest in roomdarkening blinds or dark curtains that can block out the sun when you crave darkness and let in the light when you don’t. * Redefine your viewing experience. When people come to your home, they will often be there to watch something on the screen. That makes the right technology essential. The 4K UHD Laser Smart Home Theater CineBeam Projector is perfect for binge-watching the hottest shows, enjoying an immersive gaming experience or cheering on your favorite team. The projector itself can be ceiling mounted or set up to reflect onto any screen you want, and because it is empowered with Smart TV, Page 16

you’ll have access to wireless streaming, Netflix and YouTube. What’s more, HDMI and HDCP input make your projector ready for Blu-ray and gaming consoles right out of the box. Whatever you want to do or watch, this project enhances your experience. * Install a seating strategy. Every entertaining area has viewing seats that are less than ideal, and while a new projector can expand your viewing options, there’s still no reason to settle for secondclass seating. If you’re planning to have a large group over on game day, a simple platform can provide your room with stadium seating and give everyone that at-the-game feel. If stadium seating isn’t for you, strive for an open arrangement and place display tables and other storage solutions behind seating when guests come over. Those items don’t need a good viewing angle anyway. * Add a few extra comforts. It’s time to take customizing your entertaining space up a notch by adding a few elements that are uniquely you. From
full bars to mini fridges, humidors and portable air conditioners or dehumidifiers, there are several tiny additions you can make to any entertaining area to make the space more enjoyable. If you’ve ever wished you had something nearby, now’s your time to add it. Think it over and you’ll see that the right additions can have a big impact on how you use the space and how much you enjoy it. Reshape your entertaining space today. With so many big events coming up, every moment you waste in reshaping your entertaining space is another opportunity missed, so don’t delay. Start visualizing your space for what it could be instead of what it is and you’ll be on your way to creating the entertaining space you’ve always wanted. OPEN HOUSE SUNDAY 1-4
For almost 30 years, Heritage Pointe has offered a safe and secure living environment, where Residents can live life to its fullest, surrounded by well-trained and compassionate caregivers. Its highly-acclaimed ZEST FOR LEARNING Program, which believes you are never too old to learn because learning is a lifelong adventure, offers Residents, family members, and interested community supporters an exceptional wealth of educational activities and experiences.
