Summertime isn’t just for vacations or weekends at the cabin. Create wood accents Use flooring to make headboards and accent walls. Install butcher block countertops Butcher block is a warm and rustic countertop style that’s affordable and increasingly popular. Building a garden trellis is a great way to draw more attention to what your green thumb has created. Dedicate Friday to sizing the trellis and cutting and framing the pieces, Saturday to building the panels and assembling and Sunday for digging the holes and setting the trellis into place. Tailor to what’s best for your backyard by building out of wood, bamboo or PVC pipe. Repurposed planters When gardening outside isn’t an option, bring the garden inside by making unique planter boxes. A DIY planter box is typically more affordable than store-bought, and the design possibilities are endless. Reuse vessels like shipping crates, Mason jars and tin boxes. Personalize them with colors and patterns to match your interior and inject personality and life into your space. Add crown molding Crown molding adds distinguished curves and angles to a ceiling, instantly elevating a room to a
polished and sophisticated look. DIY crown molding does require attention to detail when measuring and marking the wall and cutting pieces, so measure twice to cut once. These are just a few of the weekend-ready projects homeowners can knock out this summer to bring new life to spaces indoors and out. A weekend DIY project is a minimal time investment that not only creates a sense of accomplishment, but adds value to your home.

By Andy Costello Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks welcomed eighteen (18) new members in November. Mission Viejo residents Brian Babcock, Dan O’connor, Deborah Oestmann, Gregg Hammork, Lauren Perry, and Mary Darr were initiated into the Order. Laguna Niguel new Elks are Clayton Campbell, John Reed, and Robert Fox. Dana Point residents are David and Kathy Archard, Paul and Jennifer Pointer, and Jennifer Kneeland. Cornelius Ashton of Irvine, John VanSky of Trabuco Canyon, and Joseph Torres of Rancho Santa Margarita also were initiated. Exalted Ruler Mike Klinger and his corps of officers conducted the time honored ritual of initiation. New Elks all pledged to support the charitable programs of the Elks. Many stating that they had researched a number of local service organizations and decided that the Elks was the best choice for accomplishing their goals of giving back to the community. Local Elks Lodges from every state, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Panama Canal Zone will be busy helping our communities this holiday season. Thousands of needy families will receive food baskets and presents. The Elks National President, Michael T. Luhr motto is “Working Together to Make A Difference”. Elk volunteers will visit thousands of hospitalized Veterans that have protected our freedoms. The Elks vow “So long as there are Veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them.” The Elks support both active military forces and retired veterans. Elks furnish food, comfort care items, therapeutic items and gifts, host holiday celebrations and recreational activities at bases and hospitals, and stand ready to fulfill any need when called upon. Last year alone, the total value of Elks’ contributions to our nation’s Veterans was $47 million, and our members served more than 677,000 Veterans. The Elks have entered into a partnership with VHA to support efforts for the homeless Veterans in their communities. To this end, the Elks have pledged $4 million dollars to help end Veteran Homelessness.

The Elks will receive thousands of scholarship applications in December from high school seniors across the nation. Annually, the Elks award college scholarships across the nation totaling more than $4 million. The Elks Community Investment Program will award $12.4 million towards enriching our communities. The Elks total donations exceeded 675 million last year. There are more than 1,700 Elks Lodges across the country with a total membership nearing 800,000. Elks’ members must be American citizens who are at least 21 years of age and must believe in God. The Mission Viejo/Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge #2444 is celebrating 48 years of service to Saddleback Valley Communities. It is one of 8 lodges in the Orange Coast District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) whose headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. At that point, with nothing to do, she built an office over the store and tried her hand at writing a cookbook. The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook came out in 1999 and turned out to be the most exciting thing she’d ever done professionally. Happily, that first cookbook was a surprise best-seller. By 2002, Garten had published two more cookbooks and started filming a show for Food Network, also called Barefoot Contessa. By 2015, she had published nine cookbooks and filmed 14 years of television shows for Food Network. At the same time, she’d written monthly columns for Martha Stewart Living, Oprah magazine, and House Beautiful. She continues to write a monthly column for Food Network Magazine. hen you’re entertaining a small group, it’s fairly easy to ensure everyone enjoys the party. However, a larger group or an eclectic crowd with varied interests can make it harder to be an effective hostess. Planning party zones that cater to specific interests is one savvy solution to this dilemma. Designating areas of your home for various interests will let guests choose their own party pleasure and take some of the pressure off of making sure everyone has a good time. Your party theme and the occasion may help determine the zones most appropriate for your event, or you can get started with your party zone planning using some of these popular ideas. Game zone. There’s nothing like a little friendly competition to get guests mingling and letting loose. Offer a selection of team-oriented board games for groups of four or more, keeping the focus on lively, interactive games that get guests moving and talking as they act out, draw or brainstorm aloud. Let guests square off as they compete for bragging rights, or spice things up a little and up the ante by offering prizes for the winning teams. Conversation zone. Catching up with loved ones is among the best parts of a party, so be sure to create cozy and engaging seating areas where small groups can gather to chat. Try to limit background noise in this zone so participants aren’t fighting to hear the conversation. If space allows, scatter a few of these zones throughout the party so groups can gather where they feel most comfortable. Snack and sips zone. Make it easy for guests to indulge in the food and drinks you’ve prepared, and manage post-party cleanup, by creating designated areas for noshing. 4 Steps for Easy Entertaining

osting a large group of family and friends can be overwhelming, especially if entertaining isn’t something you do often. No matter the occasion, these tips can help you avoid common party pitfalls so you can keep the focus on having fun.
Stock the cart with an ice bucket and tongs; garnish such as lemons, limes, olives and cherries; and an assortment of glasses. Offer a couple of bottled beers on ice, at least one white and one red wine, and a couple of liquors that work with a wide array of mixers, such as vodka and rum.
Offer an assortment. Rather than attempting to plan the menu around a wide range of likes, dislikes, allergies and other considerations, create a menu that satisfies everyone’s cravings with a mix of hot and cold dishes in a variety of tastes and textures.
Never compromise on wine. Lots of times, guests have wildly different tastes in wine and it can seem impossible to select a couple bottles that everyone will like. (Santa Ana) – The Environmental Health Division of the Health Care Agency advises swimmers that levels of bacteria can rise significantly in ocean and bay waters, close to storm drains, and the outlets of creeks and rivers during and after rainstorms. The elevated bacterial levels in the coastal ocean waters may continue for a period of at least
animal wastes, and litter. During and after rain events, discharges may contain large amounts of bacteria from a variety of sources such as animal wastes and decomposing vegetation. Sewage is not normally present in the storm runoff since the sewer Storm drains, creeks, and rivers system is separate from the storm carry floodwaters and urban drain system. blend. It began commercially in 1968 and now can be placed in the same row as a first-growth Bordeaux, grand cru Burgundy or a Napa Valley cult wine. Why was 2015 a #1 year for Sassacaia? It’s in the vintage. Wine Spectator called 2015 “ripe and opulent fruit with purity and elegance.” Europe is anything but consistent with their weather patterns. The year before was a near-disaster due to chill and too much rain that slowed down ripening. The 2015 has 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc and enjoyed milder temperatures and a lot more sunny weather that came early and stayed. Occasional heavy rains came at the right time, late spring, to help flowering followed
by budding. Manual harvest ended in late September. Grapes were crisp and healthy. 17,200 cases were produced. Piero Antinori is credited with developing Sassacaia into a world class wine, adding to his legacy of making some of the finest wines to come from Italy. SAN JUAN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL CELEBRATES KINDNESS WEEK During the week of November 12-16, San Juan Hills High School celebrated “Kindness Week,” the brainchild of the SJHHS Compassion Crew. The Compassion Crew, a group of volunteer teachers and staff members dedicated to spreading positivity and kindness around campus, was formed last year following the tragic events of the Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting in Florida. The committee of teachers and staff was inspired by the power of kindness and a positive school culture to help prevent these horrible tragedies from occurring and, while they support kindness and compassion year-round, Kindness Week was a weeklong set of events to help celebrate that! This year, during each day of SJHHS Teachers Celebrate Kindness Week Kindness Week, different activities were planned for students and staff, planned by the Compassion Crew and supported by school administration and ASB. These activities included: • Tuesday: Students and staff received yellow “Be Kind” bracelets to wear all week and made a pledge to spread compassion and kindness around campus. Students were also asked to send kind text messages to friends and family members and commit to positive interactions on social media. Staff also hung large yellow sunflowers on their doors and windows with inspirational quotes about kindness. • Wednesday: A “Kindness Wall” was hung up in the upper quad on campus filled with Post-Its full of positive messages that students could hand out to friends around campus. ASB also passed our random “Kindness Grams” (a kind message with candy) to students Kindness Wall during lunch. • Thursday: Students received yellow “Keep Calm and Be Kind” t-shirts to wear around campus on Friday. • Friday: All students and staff were asked to wear yellow and attend a school-wide Kindness Celebration with music in the upper quad at lunch. Students could also fill out a paper link to the Kindness Chain and turn it in for a free churro at lunch. As the week drew to a close and students headed off on Thanksgiving Break, consensus among staff and students was that Kindness Week was a huge success! As Compassion Crew member and teacher Kristen Osborn said, “We want to be a school that believes in empathy and compassion and respect for one another. The 12th Annual Hops & Vines Charity Classic hosted by Center Club Orange County was held when an attendance of 300+ people. Breaking last year’s records, the event brought in $41,220. Proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorships benefit Center Club Cares fund, which has selected Orange County School of the Arts to be the 2018 featured beneficiary. “Since the inception of the Charity Classic in 2007, we’ve raised over $20 million for nonprofits nationwide. Last year’s event was not only amazing but record-setting! This year, we added some wonderful new wine and beer brands, and the show-stopping entertainment by Orange County School of the Arts was just perfect.” said Richard Ward, Chairman of the Board of Governors, Center Club Orange County.

In addition to Orange County School of the Arts, other benefactors from the event included Augie’s Quest to Cure ALS and the ALS Therapy Development Institute and the ClubCorp’s Employee Partners Care Foundation. After a walk on the red carpet, folks were privy to more than 30 award-winning wineries and world-class craft beers, as well as mouthwatering hors d’oeuvres from Executive Chef Lewis Butler. The Raw Bar featuring Alaskan king crab was the hit of the evening as well the “taco” type truck that was constructed with Spanish Tapas. The desserts had many to choose from, but it was the handmade Bacon-Maple, Black Chocolate, and Honey-Saffron “dip n’ dots” that were created in front of you, using liquid nitrogen and a lot of flair; it was truly fitting for the occasion.

The extremely talented Orange County School of the Arts students performed around the Club during the event, entertaining guests with some smooth saxophone music at the entry, a jazz quartet and full band for those dancers on the dance floor. Bjorn Ikast and Classini are Iconic in the $25,000 1.45m Markel Insurance Jumper Classic Photos by Captured Moment Photography July 19, 2018 - Del Mar, CA - The $25,000 Markel Insurance 1.45m Jumper Classic kept spectators on the edge of their seats as they watched Bjorn Ikast ride to the win on Classini (owned by BBB Show Jumpers, LLC). The course, designed by Anthony D’Ambrosio, included a tight time allowed which narrowed down the field from 32 in the first round to only five riders in the jump-off. In the Blenheim U25 Jumper Classic, which ran concurrently with the grand prix, Hannah Loly took home first place aboard Asombro. With Jaime Azcarraga and For Fashion double clean and fast in the jump-off, Ikast originally planned to just focus on having a clean round. But with his wife’s encouragement, he decided to go for the win which resulted in a time of 40.22 seconds, almost a full second faster than Azcarraga’s 41.19s. “We walked the course and I thought it was a really good jump-off for my horse, I just didn’t think I could beat Jaime [Azcarraga] because he was fast,” Ikast admitted. “And my wife shouted to me, ‘No way, you have to go for it, because you can be faster...’” 2018 has been a great year for the up and coming Classini, a nineyear-old Holsteiner, as this Markel Insurance Jumper Classic is his third big win. Ikast is thrilled about the horse. “I’ve had him for three years and started off in small divisions and now in the grand prix. He jumped absolutely spectacular so I’m really, really happy,” Ikast said. “I’m happy and the owners must be very happy also!” If on the list of top 25 riders that qualify for the Markel Insurance 1.45m Series Final at The Las Vegas National

The two make a great team and have been competing together for the last three years. Loly said, “He took me from 1.20m to 1.45m, so he’s done a lot for me and I know him very well.” She also expressed her fondness for the U25 program when it runs with the Markel Insurance Jumper Classic, stating, “It’s nice because, we get to compete against all the top professional riders, and we can also compete against people our age.” With the $30,000 Showpark Summer Festival 1.50m Grand Prix on Saturday, the USEF Junior Hunter National Championship and the USHJA Hunterdon Cup Equitation Classic that runs July 23-24, and the FEI CSI 2* classes coming up next week at the Showpark Racing Festival, there’s a lot to look forward to at the Del Mar Horse Park. STAR TREK NEXT GENERATION HOUSE FOR SALE
When Gene Roddenberry wrote the line “Live long and prosper,” in his 1966 television series Star Trek, little did he know that it would be a self-fulfilling prophecy that the series would thrive and continue to be recreated in many forms well into the next century. Its popularity has had generations of Trekkies all over the world scrambling to grab collectibles from the series and one of the best collectibles of them all is the house where the Season 3 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation that aired in 1989 was filmed. It has just hit the market for $5.695 million. Almost a century - in space time - after Spock and Captain Kirk set out on the original Enterprise to explore space, Star Trek: The Next Generation was the second liveaction television series and had an average of 20 million viewers while it ran from 1989 to 1990. Also created by Gene Roddenberry, it was set in the 24th century and was produced at Paramount Pictures syndicated in the U.S. by Viacom. It was so successful with its faithful Trekkies that it led to two spin-offs: Star Trek: Deep Space and Star Trek: Voyager. Trekkies will also be thrilled to know that it was just announced that there will soon be a two-season Star Trek: Lower Decks, a half-hour animated comedy about the support staff serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships.

Lower Decks is the second animated series of the Star Trek franchise, which was preceded by Star Trek: The Animated Series, which aired from 1973 to 1974. The entire Star Trek series has won multiples in every conceivable award and includes a Peabody Award in 1988. One of the main stars in Season 3 of The Next Generation was this playfully eclectic, European contemporary-style house which was the main location in which Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his Starship Enterprise crew, including Lt. Worf, land on a seemingly deserted planet. They find two people who appear to have miraculously survived a disaster that claimed the lives of the rest of the population. In the film, the house and grounds appear exactly as they do today, but with the magic of film showed a vast wasteland surrounding the property. Their entire neighborhood for as far as the eye could see, was stolen by a massive spaceship which they were unable to identify. Designed by futuristic architect/ artist and furniture designer Ellis Gelman, the eye popping wedgeshaped house features both circular and triangular windows, as well as dramatic angles.
