Coasting while hosting: 5 ways to keep your holiday spirit at your next party Many of us are already looking forward to hosting holiday gatherings this year - decorating our homes, whipping up festive foods, planning fun activities and surrounding ourselves with the warmth of family and friends. In fact, one recent survey found 67 percent of U.S. consumers host and prepare food for holiday events, while another predicts we’ll be spending an average $172 on such entertaining this season. As enjoyable as hosting is, however, the preparations can be time consuming. In a survey by Wakefield Research for BJ’s Wholesale Club this year, 26 percent of U.S. respondents reported needing at least 24 hours to prepare for a holiday party. And trying to pull everything together can add pressure when we have copious other demands on our time. “Our routines are interrupted by travel, guests, parties and the holidays themselves,” notes physician Dr. Spencer Blackman in Entrepreneur. “If you’re entertaining friends and family or organizing a work party, it takes upstream work to ensure a smooth event. Engage your support system and make a plan before things get crazy.” Consider these host-with-the-most suggestions for keeping the joy of the season no matter how large your

impending event - and for making sure it’s more fun than frantic. * Santa knows who’s on the nice list. You may be head elf, but there’s no reason to take on every bit of the cooking, cleaning and entertaining yourself. Recruit a secondary elf squad ahead of time, assigning specific tasks so the work is parceled out evenly. Note: Youngsters needing gift-buying money may be motivated to take on the more grueling chores. * Visions of sugarplums. Plan your menu ahead. When you know way ahead of time what you’ll be serving, most food items and utensils can be purchased in advance - and in volume - so you’ll have plenty to offer even if your guest list spikes unexpectedly. The last thing you want is to run out; of the 65 percent of Americans who told Wakefield they’ve been at parties that went awry, 28 percent pointed to a shortage of eating utensils and 27 percent were disappointed the food ran out early. BJ’s Wholesale Club has everything you need to stock up for your party - at incredible value. * Reindeer games? Check. Do the parents (and everyone else) at your gathering a favor by anticipating how your youngest party attendees will spend their time. Can you put together a kid-friendly craft, Lego, board game or cookie decorating table? Build a blanket fort? Set up

age-appropriate video games? Rent movies? Stage a snowman-building contest? Put up port-a-cribs and baby swings for the nappers? * Haul out the holly. Fifty-six percent of Americans see decor as more impactful on holiday spirit than food, according to Wakefield. You can always go all out on decorations if that’s your thing, but the most striking ones are often the simplest. Hang multiple strands of sparkling lights, add a fire to the fireplace, light sweetsmelling candles and generously place fresh red-ribboned pine boughs on mantles, around doorways and banisters and in containers. Nearly instant magic. * Mix and a-mingle. All too often, we’re so busy making everything perfect for our guests we don’t have

time to join in the fun ourselves. The more you plan ahead to have your food, drinks and entertainment all planned out before guests arrive, the greater your chances of being able to relax and enjoy your own festivities. The key to being a great host is to prepare enough so you’re not hopelessly frazzled by the time guests arrive. Plan ahead this year so you can appreciate the joy of entertaining and create stellar holiday memories for all who attend. It may be the perfect ending of a perfect day. Let BJ’s Wholesale Club partner with you in providing all the fresh and frozen grocery items you need for your holiday soiree, in addition to decor, kitchen supplies and a cornucopia of gift ideas. - (BPT)

GRACE CROSS OF HUNTINGTON BEACH, WAS HONORED AT NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY DAY IN ORANGE COUNTY

Olive Crest, a recognized leader in the prevention and treatment of child abuse, has announced that their nominee, Grace Cross, was selected to be honored at the 23rd Annual National Philanthropy Day in Orange County in the “OUTSTANDING YOUTH” category. This annual Awards Luncheon, produced by the Orange County Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, takes place annually in November each year, and was held recently at the City National Grove of Anaheim. National Philanthropy Day® is the inspiring occasion when thousands of people around the world come together annually to celebrate giving, volunteering, and charitable engagement, thus raising awareness of the role of philanthropy in our daily lives. It is a day that honors and recognizes exemplary local philanthropists, organizations, and businesses who give so generously of their time, talents, and financial support, making our community a better place. It is the organization’s belief that philanthropy benefits not only our own communities, but it enriches and empowers the global community. National Philanthropy Day offers an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of charitable giving and the spirit that makes such generosity possible.

National Philanthropy Day Orange County has become the most prominent philanthropic recognition event in Orange County, with more than 1,000 honorees since its inception in 1986. “Grace and I met several years ago, when she came to my office at Olive Crest dressed in her full Brownie uniform with a cart full of Girl Scout cookies,” stated Tim Bauer, Executive Director of Development at Olive Crest in Orange County. “I soon realized that these cookies weren’t for me or my staff – they were for our Olive Crest kids! Grace has gone way beyond earning her Philanthropy ‘Learning To Give Back’ Badge from the Girl Scouts, which she received several years ago. Grace has a true heart for our Olive Crest kids, and we are very blessed to have her support. She is an amazing role model for giving back at such a young age to her community. She thinks of others first, knowing that it will benefit the people served by the organization. Grace Cross is certainly one-of-akind!” Bauer continued. Grace Cross was born 3 ½ months early at 26 weeks, weighing in at just 2 pounds. The doctors said she would have a 10% chance of living, much less having any kind of normal life. When Grace was 11 months old, she was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Grace is now 12 years old

Tim Bauer, Grace Cross, and Kerri Dunkelberger and works hard to not let her disability brother had volunteered. Inspired define her. Her philanthropic efforts by a local business woman and her started at a very young age. In own personal desire to help kids kindergarten, Grace joined the Girl and families, Grace researched Scouts of Orange County, where other charities she could donate she first learned about the concept to. It’s that time of year when employees are seeking meaningful and appropriate holiday gifts for their coworkers and clients. While the process should be fun, because such gifts can inadvertently send unspoken messages to their recipients, making the right choice at the right time can be surprisingly tricky. No one wants to come across as impersonal or lacking in good taste, but it’s all too easy to pick something that’s too expensive or too impractical to make the statement you’re intending to make. With that thought in mind, consider these guidelines for buying or making gifts for your coworker that are memorable and appropriate. *Consider practicality. If the present is unlikely to be used or consumed, it’s a mismatch and a waste of money. For example, even the rarest or priciest bottle of wine will be

unimpressive to a client who doesn’t drink. Before buying, attempt to learn something about the recipient’s preferences, then picture what he or she will do with the gift once he or she receives it. *Incorporate name(s). Whenever possible, personalize your selection by adding your boss’, colleague’s or direct report’s name to the gift. Research shows people across many demographics get excited when hearing or seeing their own monikers. Fortunately, Staples offers a wide variety of ideas for quality presents that can be easily personalized for each recipient. *Don’t scrimp on presentation. Nothing ruins a gift faster than uninspired or slipshod packaging that seems like an afterthought. Make sure all of your gifts are presented in attractive, sturdy boxes, baskets and/ or bags that add to their overall effect.

Myka Meier, Founder of Beaumont Etiquette and expert authority on business etiquette says of holiday gift-giving in the workplace, “It is important to gift both colleagues and clients during the holiday season, as it is a great relationship building opportunity to establish rapport while showing respect and gratitude.” Myka adds, “For colleagues or junior team members, it’s typical to spend around $25. For clients or senior team members, such as a boss, often the entire team will chip in for one larger gift so it shows unity and appreciation from the entire team” Taking care of your employees during the season of giving doesn’t need to be difficult or stressful. Check out how Staples can help you find and personalize the perfect gifts and greeting cards. - (BPT)

5 hacks to save time and money during the holidays

The holidays are a wonderful time of year to spend with family and friends, and to reconnect with those you may not often see. However, the festive season can also be a busy and expensive time. By January, many are left feeling exhausted physically, emotionally and financially. But don’t let the stress of the season stand in the way of the magic - follow these easy tips and tricks to enjoy a more relaxing and joyful holiday season. * Make a list: And check it twice! Getting organized this holiday season can save you time and money. When shopping for holiday gifts, having a complete list before you enter the store can prevent you from browsing the aisles for items you do not need. You will also have an estimated total cost before shopping, so you can stick to your budget. * Send e-cards: It is always exciting to receive holiday mail from loved ones, but between the postage and printing fees, sending your own cards can quickly add up. Sending e-cards, however, is a more cost-effective

approach and you can send as many as you’d like! You can also apply the money you save to your gifting budget. * Switch to Straight Talk: From searching seasonal recipes to online shopping, there is no better helper than a smartphone during the holiday season. Straight Talk Wireless recently launched its new Ultimate Unlimited Plan for just $55 per month - helping you tackle the holidays and stream your favorite videos at DVD quality, without worrying about running out of high speed data. Never get throttled again. So treat yourself to the gift of unlimited data by switching to Straight Talk Wireless, the leading no-contract wireless provider that offers customers the best phones on the best networks for less. With no contracts, no credit checks and no mystery fees, your phone bill will be one less cost to worry about this season. * Wrap like a pro: Gift wrapping can be one of the most time consuming activities of the holidays. However,

there are multiple hacks to expedite the wrapping process. For oddly shaped gifts - use Kraft paper bags and decorate with a silver paint marker. You can also spruce up plain wrapping paper using twine, ribbons and stencils. Be creative if you run out of supplies, in the end it is the thought that matters, not the presentation! * Monitor for deals: Online holiday shopping has made it easy to avoid the craze of the mall. But another added benefit of shopping from home

is finding ways to avoid paying full price. Once you reach the checkout page, do a quick online search for discount codes for that particular site. You will be shocked to find how simple it is to save a few extra bucks or even snag free shipping! Make it a priority this year to not lose the spirit of the season within the hustle and bustle. While they may seem simple, these few steps will help you put an end to the post-holiday slump before it hits. - (BPT)

Fun or fantasy? How to know if a video game is right for your child If you are like most Americans, you have computer and video game fans in your home. However, as a parent, it is not always easy to decide if a popular video game is right for your child. That is where ratings and parental controls can help. Understanding what a particular video game entails is especially important as the holiday gift-giving season approaches. A friend or relative might buy your child the “it” game with good intentions while not realizing it is meant for older, more mature gamers. In the end, it is the parent’s responsibility to determine if a game is appropriate or should be exchanged for another option. Clear ratings and parental controls on devices make it easy for parents to select the right games for their kids. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) is a nonprofit organization that empowers consumers to make informed choices about appropriate video games through its rating system and other tools. ESRB ratings are printed on video game packages to clearly tell parents what games are appropriate for what age group, so parents can make the decision that is best for them. To increase awareness, a new public service announcement educates parents about the ESRB ratings and parental controls. With the video game industry’s unique partners, networks and technologies,

the PSA can be seen on TV, video game consoles and websites, mobile devices and in stores through retailers. When selecting a game for your children, or researching one received as a gift, follow these tips to determine if the game is right for them: 1. Check the rating printed on the package. While an “E for Everyone” rating means the game is suitable for all ages, a game rated “T for Teen” has content that is more appropriate for older children and “M for Mature” is generally meant for players ages 17 or older. 2. Read Content Descriptors and Interactive Elements. ESRB ratings also include more detailed information about game content that may have triggered a particular rating, such as Crude Humor or Strong Language. Interactive Elements notices, which are listed at ESRB.org and on the free ESRB rating search mobile app, indicate the user’s ability to broadcast their location with other players, share their personal information with third parties, or interact with other gamers online. 3. Set parental controls. Whether your child owns a console, handheld device or plays on the computer, most video game systems have parental control options. These controls can be set to block games by ESRB rating category, regulate

play time and restrict access to the Internet. Learn more about setting controls for individual systems at www.esrb.org/parents. 4. Check online reviews. The Internet era has provided more information than ever about different video games. Online reviews are useful and may feature screenshots, video and written opinion to help parents get insight about a game before ordering or opening the package. 5. Be involved. Parents should be proactive and aware of what games their children are playing, including with whom they are playing online. Parental involvement is the best way to ensure

your kids enjoy games and stay safe online. Talk with your children about what they like or dislike about a game, ask whom they are playing with and when, and consider having all game play occur in a public area of the house so adults can easily monitor it. While the content of video games today may be more varied than ever before, parents also have many more options for learning about video games and controlling what their kids will experience. Make sure you and your loved ones understand the ESRB rating system and other controls and keep holiday gift giving an enjoyable experience for all. - (BPT)

Laura’s House Raises $530,000 for Domestic Violence Victims Wearing disco fashions and boogieying to the groovy sounds of the ‘70s, more than 300 domestic violence advocates gathered at the Island Hotel Newport Beach to celebrate Laura’s House 23rd annual gala themed “Saturday Night Fever at Club Laura’s House.” Emceed by NBC 4 Emmy-winning reporter Hetty Chang, the successful soirée raised more than $530,000 for services benefiting domestic violence victims, including the Laura’s House emergency shelter, community programs, legal advocacy services, prevention and education outreach programs and more. The evening began with a cocktail reception that included a silent auction filled with unique experiences and luxury items such as a three-night stay at the Grand Wailea in Maui, Anaheim Ducks tickets, Kendra Scott jewelry, an Urban Decay beauty basket, Caribbean adventures and more. Setting the tone for the evening, guests were welcomed with a fun photo opportunity, followed by nostalgic performances of pop hits such as “Boogie Fever” and “Staying Alive.” Guests were then ushered to the ballroom for a scrumptious dinner, starting with a mixed green salad with Marcona almonds, dried tart cherries, baby heirloom tomatoes and shaved Manchego cheese, followed by a red wine braised short ribs on truffle risotto. For dessert, sweets lovers had the option between a delicious smore’s pudding cake with house made salted caramel ice cream or an exquisite crisp raspberry brulee tart with seasonal berries. Laura’s House awarded its 2017 Crystal Heart Award to Erik Cadle and Adrian Vasquez from Irvine-based Western National Group, for their dedication and help in remodeling Laura’s House newest site, the 2,200-square foot Domestic Violence Advocacy Center (DVAC) accommodating the Laura’s House fast-growing legal team, and offering therapeutic services, workshops and groups. Cadle and Vasquez mobilized their network and donated countless hours and weekend time to transform the office into a beautiful, safe and peaceful haven for Laura’s House clients to address their issues with therapists and legal advocates. Looking radiant as always, Laura’s House board member Cheryl Osborn from Casco Contractors, was honored with the 2017 Corporate Crystal Heart Award for unwavering and generous support of the nonprofit. Throughout the years, under Osborn’s leadership, Casco Contractors conducted major improvement projects at Laura’s House’s emergency shelter, transitional living facility and at its San Juan Capistrano and Lake Forest resale stores. During the program, three emotional recordings of survivors calling 911 for assistance, one from a woman and two from children, were played for the audience, a reminder that domestic violence remains a prevalent issue for the entire family within our community. Attendees also heard a first-hand testimony from a survivor who shared her personal story of survival and experience working with the Laura’s House legal team. Bayston, Adam Dodge, legal director, and Jennifer Ponce, prevention education manager, also highlighted the areas of rapid expansion and the need for additional support in these areas, as Laura’s House continues to meet the needs of our community. The program also included a live auction with fabulous prizes such as box seats to Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull and Janet Jackson concerts at the Honda Center, luxurious Maui getaways, and a special appeal ‘Rebuild a Life,’ directly funding programs and services provided by Laura’s House. The opportunity drawing winner captured a weekend getaway in a Tesla. Following the program, the fabulous disco Sensation Showband started the dance party with guests onstage for a fun rendition of the “YMCA.” The mission of Laura’s House is to change the social beliefs, attitudes and the behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence while creating a safe space to empower individuals and families affected by abuse. PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated

(approved) The Newport News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people

of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising.

QUARTER PAGE COLOR This month I have terrific low prices on quarter page full color ad packages. Plus you can choose to either pay as you go. But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona Del Mar and Newport Coast? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like these reasonably priced local newspapers which are received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners. This advertising costs you far less money. These five local newspapers are attractive, effective and affordable. Let’s talk today!

Richard Spooner Scores a Trifecta at The 2017 Las Vegas National Photos by McCool It was a spectacular Saturday night at the one and only South Point Equestrian Arena, as thirty competitors representing seven countries were vying for valuable North American League points in the $100,000 Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Las Vegas, presented by Interactive Mortgage. Three riders posted clear rounds and returned for a remarkable jump-off that required the precision of Longines timing to clarify. Second to last to go, Richard Spooner (USA) aboard the 10-yearold Hanovarian gelding Chatinus, beat the leading time held by USA’s Alison Robitaille to take the win. This was the third victory for Spooner this week at The Las Vegas National CSI4*-W, on three different mounts. Opening Ceremonies began with the Parade of Nations, a tradition at The Las Vegas National, with each rider introduced to a cheering audience, setting the scene for some show jumping splendor. Following the exit of the FEI riders, the US Equestrian Chef D’Equipe Robert Ridland and Young RIder Chef D’Equipe DiAnn Langer honored eight Zone 10 equestrians for their impressive accolades in championship events this year. Entertainment ensued as the lights went down and Ki-Juan Minors sang several of his own songs, and then the National Anthem. The entertainment didn’t end there, as the thrills and spills of international show jumping followed. Noting that the conditions, materials, and field of riders were all top notch, International Course Designer Oscar Soberon set his course to a high-performance standard. “There are a few jumps at 1.60m which are verticals. The oxers are 1.50m, with spreads of 1.50m to 1.70m, so it’s a very challenging and demanding course. The main objective is to prepare the North American riders for a great result in the Final.” World Cup™ Champions, Olympic Medalists, and CSI5* athletes, mixed with up-and-coming horses and riders, all faced the jump challenges that included an arched wall at fence one, three scopey combinations, a triple bar in the middle of the course, and an option line to a large oxer at the end of the course. Soberon believes it’s important for the horses to see variety in the jumps: “The horses need to see more than just two or three rails in an oxer or Page 16

Spooner said he was surprised that his time was so much faster. “I was fortunate enough to watch Alison’s jump-off round, and I felt optimistic that I could beat her time if I carried a bit more of a gallop from the second fence to the third fence.
