ENVIRONMENTAL NATURE CENTER NATURE PRESCHOOL PROJECT WILL BREAK GROUND ON FEBRUARY 15
The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) will celebrate the official groundbreaking of its highly anticipated state-of-the-art Nature Preschool on February 15, 2018. The ENC Nature Preschool will be the community’s first nature preschool and nature play area. The preschool will be located on 1.3 acres bordering the Nature Center’s Redwood Forest, at 745 Dover Drive. Nature Preschools are popular in countries such as Germany and Finland, and are gaining popularity in the US. These innovative schools teach the building blocks of a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) education by providing young children with the opportunity to become familiar with the natural world by playing and learning while surrounded by nature. Qualified early childhood educators and environmental educators will teach the basics of a typical preschool

and more. Indoor spaces will be warm, welcoming and conducive to learning, but the majority of the day will be spent learning outside. “It is becoming increasingly evident that nature-based preschools are more effective in terms of learning and health benefits,” said ENC Executive Director Bo Glover. “Our Nature Preschool will provide quality education and nature exploration opportunities for preschool children, a n d h el p t h e m d e v e l o p i n t o environmentally literate adults, which is needed today more than ever.” The ENC is aiming to achieve a Platinum Level LEED Rating on the new facility. The US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. It is also the ENC’s goal

to achieve certification through the Living Building Challenge. The preschool was already awarded a citation from the American Institute of Architects Orange County Chapter (AIAOCC) in 2015. The ENC’s Nature Preschool was one of eight projects selected to receive an award out of the 56 projects that were entered into the design competition. It was the only project to receive an award that was not a completed project; meaning the jury saw great potential in the building. It was noted during the award ceremony “that the site design and building worked seamlessly and a great deal of thought was given to the creation of a learning environment where nature was the focus.” “The ENC’s Nature Pre-school will have play areas but no playgrounds,” said ENC Nature Preschool Director Sue Bierlich. “Students will spend the majority of the day outdoors, where they will have ample time for

Pancakes Recipe courtesy of Nestlé Servings: 10 pancakes 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup granulated sugar 3 tablespoons Nestlé Toll House Baking Cocoa 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 large egg 1 cup reduced-fat buttermilk or low-fat milk 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon red food coloring heart-shaped pancake cutters or cookie cutters (optional) butter, for garnish (optional) powdered sugar, for garnish (optional) maple syrup, for garnish (optional) fresh berries, for garnish (optional) In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt; stir well. MUSIC COMES TO LIFE AT SEGERSTROM CENTER IN ANATOMY OF THE PIANO FOR BEGINNERS

As he tries to work out how he might use it to reach the moon, Will is drawn into a fantastic pianistic adventure that takes him to a cave where he meets Johann Sebastian Bach, is introduced to an ill-tempered Ludwig von Beethoven and jams with ‘Fats’ Waller. With music, humor and fascinating stories about the piano and legendary composers and musicians who used it to create glorious music, Will discovers that, through music, you can go anywhere you want. Anatomy of the Piano (for
beginners) and Will’s amazing journey come to Segerstrom Center for the Arts on February 17 and 18, 2018 in Samueli Theater. Performances are at 1 p.m. The Sunday performance will be ASL interpreted. An improvising pianist by make-up, he practices Bach Fugues, Beethoven sonatas and Brahms intermezzi, not with the intention of performing these great works, but rather to feed a neverending quest for musical vocabulary and depth in his own inventions. He cannot recall not being able to play the piano and cannot imagine what it must be like not to be able to play the piano. His shows have toured to the UK, Australia, Malaysia and China. Segerstrom Center’s 2017 – 2018 Family Series continues with The Gruffalo (March 24-25, 2018), Shh! We Have a Plan (April 14-15, 2018) and Mr. Popper’s Penguins (April 22, 2018). George and Julia Argyros with Michael Bolton Photos by Doug Gifford The event of 2017 that I always look forward to is the Segerstrom Center for the Arts Candlelight Concert – held at the Segerstrom Center. Every year, they dazzle us with outstanding musical guests, fine dining and an after party that’s just top notch. This year, starlight and the Chicago skyline surrounded guests during this year’s spectacular 44th annual Candlelight Concert. One of the Center’s oldest traditions, Candlelight Concert exceeded previous Candlelight Concert records, raising more than $1.6 million and attended by 460 people. Segerstrom Center’s new Board Chairman, Mark Perry and his wife Carol chaired the event, which featured multi-Grammy® Awardwinner Michael Bolton and Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame band Chicago. Bolton opened his set with the song “Stand by Me” which was dedicated to Julia and George Argyros. Chicago played their hits which kept everyone on the dance floor dancing and singing along. Julia and George Argyros were honored guests who were celebrated and cheered for their generous gift to build the Center’s beautiful new Julianne and George Argyros Plaza and the Center for Dance and Innovation. Ronnie Allumbaugh, Sandi Jackson and Sandi Simon were honorary co-chairs. Décor was inspired by the band of course and, coincidentally, became a nod to Chairwoman Perry who hails from the Windy City. The Plaza Vista Middle School Choir serenaded guests as they arrived, standing in front Segerstrom Center’s new Board Chairman Mark Perry with Marta of custom marquee suggestive of Chicago’s famous theater marquees. Guests dined on the Segerstrom Hall stage and enjoyed a chilled Pee Wee Bhathal, Lisa and Jim Merage Potato and Smoked Salmon Salad with cucumber, creme fraiche dill and salmon caviar for starters. The main dish was a double header of porcini-rubbed filet mignon with roasted root vegetable ragout, and horseradish cauliflower crème, red wine jus and roosted fig AND a white wine-poached sole Veronique with green grapes, lemon braised fennel with champagne foam and sauce vin blanc. Oh, and the dessert was Patina’s take on the Chicago classic with golden sponge cake, white chocolate Chantilly, banana cream and passion gel. After dinner, we danced shoulder-to-shoulder to Chicago’s mega-hits. This year, women were given flat comfy shoes to wear so after an evening of wearing high heels – it was a relief to have a cozy pair of shoes to dance in! Once the music stopped, guests made their way to the Kia Valet Lounge via the new circular staircase from the hall’s Orchestra Terrace to the Argyros Plaza below. Sweet treats, hot chocolate and authentic Chicago hotdogs made for tasty midnight snacks. This year’s coup de Candlelight theatre? A gentle snowfall as people left Segerstrom Hall and entered the Argyros Plaza. Mark Perry noted, “We’re honored to recognize Julia and George Argyros at this year’s Candlelight Concert. Their visionary support is helping us to serve all of the dynamic and diverse communities of Orange County. The Julianne and George Argyros Plaza and Center for Dance and Innovation enables us to offer new and innovative community engagement and education programs that complement the expanding array of world-class performances that the Center presents. The funds raised by Candlelight Concert will support all of Jim and Angela Hsu with Betty and S.L. Huang these important programs as the Center begins an exciting and bold next act.” Proceeds from Candlelight Concert support the Center’s artistic programming, which brings the largest array of the finest artists and performances to Orange County, and community engagement and education programs that serve more than 300,000 young people and students each year. In fact, since opening in 1986, more than 17 million people have attended performances and more than 6 million children and families have participated in various community and education programs. The inaugural Candlelight Concert, which raised money to build a major performing arts center in Orange County, was held in a vacant Kresge five-anddime. It was transformed into an elegant ballroom with the use of candles. Since then, the annual gala has been called Candlelight Concert, with entertainment by celebrated artists. These have included Diana Krall, Diana Ross, Frankie Valli, Jay Leno, Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett, Kenny Loggins, Harry Belafonte, Johnny Mathis, Donna Summer, Smokey Robinson, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Broadway stars Kristen Chenoweth, Sutton Foster as well as many others.
