Governor Brown Appoints Orange County Superior Court Judges
Cynthia M. Herrera Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced the appointment of California superior court judges. Cynthia M. Herrera, 46, of Santa Ana, has been appointed to a judgeship in the Orange County Superior Court. Herrera has served as a senior deputy district attorney in the Orange County District Attorney’s Office since 2011, where she has been a deputy district attorney since 1997. She earned a Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Irvine. She fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge W. Michael Hayes. Herrera is a Democrat.
Kimberly A. Knill Kimberly A. Knill, 54, of Aliso Viejo, has been appointed to a judgeship in the Orange County Superior Court. Knill has served as a senior appellate attorney at the Fourth District Court of Appeal since 2016. She was a research attorney at the Orange County Superior Court from 2014 to 2016, a writing instructor at Whittier Law School from 1997 to 1998 and a sole practitioner from 1994 to 2014. Knill was an associate at McDermott, Will and Emery from 1988 to 1994. She earned a Juris Doctor degree from the Pepperdine University School of Law and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arizona. She fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Mary F. Schulte. Knill is a Republican.
Thomas S. McConville Thomas S. McConville, 53, of Irvine, has been appointed to a judgeship in the Orange County Superior Court. McConville has been a partner at Orrick, Herrington and Sutcliffe since 2009, where he was of counsel from 2007 to 2009. He served as deputy chief of the Santa Ana Office in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California from 2004 to 2006, where he served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney from 2000 to 2006. McConville served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Ohio from 1996 to 2000 and was an associate at McKenna and Cuneo from 1991 to 1996. He earned a Juris Doctor degree from the Georgetown University Law Center and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University. He fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Thomas J. Borris. McConville is a Democrat.
Red Cross Says Test Smoke Alarms and Turn Clocks Ahead for Daylight Saving Time Working Smoke Alarms Cut the Risk of Dying from a Home Fire in Half Daylight Saving Time is this weekend and the American Red Cross reminds remind everyone to TEST the batteries in their smoke alarms as they TURN their clocks ahead an hour. “It’s important for everyone to make sure their household is ready,” said Linda E. Voss, CEO, American Red Cross Desert to the Sea Region. “A disaster like a home fire can happen anywhere, at any time. We urge people to take these steps now and know what they should do if an emergency occurs.” Check smoke alarm batteries. Test smoke alarms once a month. Change the batteries at least once a year – if your model requires it. Place smoke alarms on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Install smoke alarms. If someone doesn’t have smoke alarms, install them. At a minimum, put one on every level of the home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Check local building codes for additional requirements. Practice an escape plan. Make sure everyone in the family knows how to get out of every room and how to get out of the home in less than two minutes. Get a kit. Keep disaster supplies in Page 4
an easy-to-carry bag to use at home or carry in case ordered to evacuate. Make a plan. Have all household members plan what steps they should take if an emergency occurs. Be informed. Learn what emergencies can occur in the area and how officials notify residents should a disaster occur. RED CROSS APPS People can download the all-inclusive Red Cross Emergency app which combines more than 35 emergency alerts to help keep the user safe. And there is a special mobile app - Monster Guard - designed for kids, teaching them to prepare for emergencies at home by playing an engaging game. Users can find the apps in smartphone app stores by searching for the American Red Cross or going to redcross.org/ apps. HOME FIRE CAMPAIGN Seven times a day someone in this country dies in a fire. The Red Cross has been working to reduce that number through its Home Fire Campaign, a multi-year effort to reduce the number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent. Launched in October of 2014, the Red Cross and thousands of campaign partners have helped save many lives through the effort, as well as installing 1.1 million smoke alarms in homes all across the country. encompasses Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, the Red Cross has installed more than 8,000 smoke alarms in fiscal year 2018. Donations to Disaster Relief will be used to prepare for,
respond to and help people recover from disasters big and small. Kobe Bryant The former Los Angeles Lakers star won an Oscar in the animated short category for “Dear Basketball,” a poem he wrote after ending his 20-year career on the court in 2016. He’ll add it to an already jammed trophy collection that includes five NBA championships with the Lakers, two Olympic gold medals, NBA Finals most valuable player awards, a league MVP award and four All-Star game MVP awards. Backstage, Bryant looked lovingly at the statue cradled in his hands and mouthed, “My God.” “I feel better than winning championships,” he said, a smile never leaving his face. “This is crazy, man, it’s crazy.” As executive producer of the sixminute film, Bryant accepted his golden Oscar statue from “Star Wars”
star Mark Hamill on Sunday night. He shared the award with Disney animator Glen Keane. “You don’t have to sit in a tub of ice,” Keane told Bryant backstage. Among those offering their congratulations via Twitter were Hall of Famers Magic Johnson, Bill Russell and Shaquille O’Neal, Bryant’s former Lakers teammate who admitted, “I’m jealous lol.” Since hanging up his basketball shoes, Bryant has delved into business (a new Nike shoe) and various forms of storytelling. The 39-year-old sports superstar believed the nomination validated that he could succeed off the court. “I mean, as basketball players we’re really supposed to shut up and dribble but I’m glad we do a little bit more than that,” Bryant said on stage.
Bryant said he heard dismissive comments like “That’s cute” when he told people he wanted to become a storyteller in retirement. “The hardest thing when you start over, you have to quiet the ego and begin again. You have to learn the basics of things,” he said. From the stage, Bryant thanked his wife, Vanessa, and three daughters, naming each of them. He spoke a few words of Italian — a language he learned as a child growing up in Italy — and closed by telling them, “You are my inspiration.” Backstage, Bryant credited Oprah Winfrey and writer-producer Shonda Rhimes for sharing their knowledge of the entertainment business. “When you have mentors like that in your life, everything tends to work itself out,” he said. -AP

Time Change for spring 2018 is this weekend By Mary Zeiher When does the time change for Spring 2018? That time change question seems to be something that a lot of people are asking themselves. For this year, 2018, the time change will occur on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 2 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. And remember for the time change 2018 this spring you will “spring forward”, or move your clocks ahead one hour. It is easy to remember which way to move your clocks if you follow the old adage of, in the spring you “Spring forward” and in the fall you “Fall back”. Remember that the way this whole time change thing is setup is as follows: At 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March each year, we set our clocks forward one hour ahead of Standard Time (“Spring forward”). Then at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November each year we “Fall back” and we set our clocks back one hour and this returns us to Standard Time. Daylight Saving Time was actually put in place during World War I in the United States as a way to save energy for the war production. By changing the time it made for longer days between April and October.
Then again during World War II the government required the states to perform the instituted time change. But then after the wars the states were free to choose whether or not they wanted to institute the Daylight Savings time or not. But by 1966, Congress got involved and passed the Uniform Time Act, which then dictated the length of Daylight Saving Time. These longer days do mean that we use less energy as a country in lighting our homes and businesses. In 2005, Congress came along again and passed the Energy Policy Act. That started that starting in 2007 that Daylight Saving Time would be four weeks longer. The thought process was that we would be able to save approximately 10,000 barrels of oil each day through reducing power requirements of businesses. But that is a very difficult metric to verify and to know if we are seeing the savings that was projected. So, when does the time change for spring 2018? Just remember that on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 2 a.m. Eastern Standard Time you will set your clocks back one hour.

“8 Over 80” Are Honored at Heritage Pointe Gala

The festivities began with a sumptuous cocktail reception in the foyer of the Grand Ballroom, followed by a delectable four course dinner inside the elegant Grand Ballroom, with over 500 guests in attendance at this not-tobe-missed annual Gala. Barbara Shapiro, well-known Orange County philanthropist, Chaired this year’s gala, joined by her committee consisting of long-time Heritage Pointe Board member, Roberta Feuerstein, Ann Miller, and Elana Samson. All four of these women have lent their tremendous support to many organizations within the Orange County Jewish community, and Heritage Pointe was extremely fortunate to have them all serve for this auspicious and celebratory event. “It is an honor to have been asked to Chair this very significant event, recognizing eight outstanding individuals who are in their 80s, and who have continued to give back to their community in so many ways,” stated Event Chair Barbara Shapiro. “I try to be someone who would have made my Mother and Grandmother, of blessed memory, proud. Because I lost them at a young age, I appreciate the wisdom of my elders. You learn a lot spending time with older people. Hearing their stories of love, overcoming hardships, their successes, and family dynamics, can inspire you to avoid or embrace those aspects of life. The distinguished group of “8 Over 80” Honorees recognized at this year’s Gala included Leona Aronoff-Sadacca, Dr. Doris Chasin, Rose Lacher, Dr. Joe & Barbara Lebovitz, Marlene Mitnick, Dr. Herb Modelevsky, Blossom Siegel, and Polly Sloan. “8 OVER 80” lauds the creativity and significance of the over 80 generation, something our honorees demonstrate every day,” stated Beth Slavin, Director of Philanthropy for Heritage Pointe. “Each honoree vigorously supports worthy causes that continually enrich our community and inspire individuals. With 30 % of the U.S. population expected to reach 80 or older by 2030, “8 OVER 80” reflects the changing times in which we live.
