Red Cross Says Test Smoke Alarms and Turn Clocks Ahead for Daylight Saving Time Working Smoke Alarms Cut the Risk of Dying from a Home Fire in Half Daylight Saving Time is this weekend and the American Red Cross reminds remind everyone to TEST the batteries in their smoke alarms as they TURN their clocks ahead an hour. “It’s important for everyone to make sure their household is ready,” said Linda E. Voss, CEO, American Red Cross Desert to the Sea Region. “A disaster like a home fire can happen anywhere, at any time. We urge people to take these steps now and know what they should do if an emergency occurs.” Check smoke alarm batteries. Test smoke alarms once a month. Change the batteries at least once a year – if your model requires it. Place smoke alarms on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Install smoke alarms. If someone doesn’t have smoke alarms, install them. At a minimum, put one on every level of the home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Check local building codes for additional requirements. Practice an escape plan. Make sure everyone in the family knows how to get out of every room and how to get out of the home in less than two minutes. Get a kit. Keep disaster supplies in Page 4

an easy-to-carry bag to use at home or carry in case ordered to evacuate. Make a plan. Have all household members plan what steps they should take if an emergency occurs. Be informed. Learn what emergencies can occur in the area and how officials notify residents should a disaster occur. RED CROSS APPS People can download the all-inclusive Red Cross Emergency app which combines more than 35 emergency alerts to help keep the user safe. And there is a special mobile app - Monster Guard - designed for kids, teaching them to prepare for emergencies at home by playing an engaging game. Users can find the apps in smartphone app stores by searching for the American Red Cross or going to redcross.org/ apps. HOME FIRE CAMPAIGN Seven times a day someone in this country dies in a fire. The Red Cross has been working to reduce that number through its Home Fire Campaign, a multi-year effort to reduce the number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent. Launched in October of 2014, the Red Cross and thousands of campaign partners have helped save many lives through the effort, as well as installing 1.1 million smoke alarms in homes all across the country. Here in the Desert to the Sea region, which

Kobe Bryant The former Los Angeles Lakers star won an Oscar in the animated short category for “Dear Basketball,” a poem he wrote after ending his 20-year career on the court in 2016. He’ll add it to an already jammed trophy collection that includes five NBA championships with the Lakers, two Olympic gold medals, NBA Finals most valuable player awards, a league MVP award and four All-Star game MVP awards. Backstage, Bryant looked lovingly at the statue cradled in his hands and mouthed, “My God.” “I feel better than winning championships,” he said, a smile never leaving his face. “This is crazy, man, it’s crazy.” As executive producer of the sixminute film, Bryant accepted his golden Oscar statue from “Star Wars”

star Mark Hamill on Sunday night. He shared the award with Disney animator Glen Keane. “You don’t have to sit in a tub of ice,” Keane told Bryant backstage. Among those offering their congratulations via Twitter were Hall of Famers Magic Johnson, Bill Russell and Shaquille O’Neal, Bryant’s former Lakers teammate who admitted, “I’m jealous lol.” Since hanging up his basketball shoes, Bryant has delved into business (a new Nike shoe) and various forms of storytelling. The 39-year-old sports superstar believed the nomination validated that he could succeed off the court. “I mean, as basketball players we’re really supposed to shut up and dribble but I’m glad we do a little bit more than that,” Bryant said on stage.

Bryant said he heard dismissive comments like “That’s cute” when he told people he wanted to become a storyteller in retirement. “The hardest thing when you start over, you have to quiet the ego and begin again. You have to learn the basics of things,” he said. From the stage, Bryant thanked his wife, Vanessa, and three daughters, naming each of them. He spoke a few words of Italian — a language he learned as a child growing up in Italy — and closed by telling them, “You are my inspiration.” Backstage, Bryant credited Oprah Winfrey and writer-producer Shonda Rhimes for sharing their knowledge of the entertainment business. “When you have mentors like that in your life, everything tends to work itself out,” he said. -AP

Time Change for spring 2018 is this weekend By Mary Zeiher When does the time change for Spring 2018? That time change question seems to be something that a lot of people are asking themselves. For this year, 2018, the time change will occur on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 2 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. And remember for the time change 2018 this spring you will “spring forward”, or move your clocks ahead one hour. It is easy to remember which way to move your clocks if you follow the old adage of, in the spring you “Spring forward” and in the fall you “Fall back”. Remember that the way this whole time change thing is setup is as follows: At 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March each year, we set our clocks forward one hour ahead of Standard Time (“Spring forward”). Then at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November each year we “Fall back” and we set our clocks back one hour and this returns us to Standard Time. Daylight Saving Time was actually put in place during World War I in the United States as a way to save energy for the war production. By changing the time it made for longer days between April and October.

Then again during World War II the government required the states to perform the instituted time change. But then after the wars the states were free to choose whether or not they wanted to institute the Daylight Savings time or not. But by 1966, Congress got involved and passed the Uniform Time Act, which then dictated the length of Daylight Saving Time. These longer days do mean that we use less energy as a country in lighting our homes and businesses. In 2005, Congress came along again and passed the Energy Policy Act. That started that starting in 2007 that Daylight Saving Time would be four weeks longer. The thought process was that we would be able to save approximately 10,000 barrels of oil each day through reducing power requirements of businesses. But that is a very difficult metric to verify and to know if we are seeing the savings that was projected. So, when does the time change for spring 2018? Just remember that on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 2 a.m. Eastern Standard Time you will set your clocks back one hour.

“8 Over 80” Are Honored at Heritage Pointe Gala

The Newport News

Beth Slavin, Director of Philanthropy for Heritage Pointe, Mike Photos by Ann Chatillon Silverman, CEO of Heritage Pointe, ‘8 OVER 80’ Honorees Barbara and Heritage Pointe, Orange County’s premier independent, assisted-living and memory care Senior community, hosted its 28th Annual Fundraising Gala Dr. Joe Lebovitz “8 OVER 80” in grand style at the elegant Island Hotel in Newport Beach rasing $200,000 for the nonprofit. The festivities began with a sumptuous cocktail reception in the foyer of the Grand Ballroom, followed by a delectable four course dinner inside the elegant Grand Ballroom, with over 500 guests in attendance at this not-tobe-missed annual Gala. Barbara Shapiro, well-known Orange County philanthropist, Chaired this year’s gala, joined by her committee consisting of long-time Heritage Pointe Board member, Roberta Feuerstein, Ann Miller, and Elana Samson. All four of these women have lent their tremendous support to many organizations within the Orange County Jewish community, and Heritage Pointe was extremely fortunate to have them all serve for this auspicious and celebratory event. “It is an honor to have been asked to Chair this very significant event, recognizing eight outstanding individuals who are in their 80s, and who have continued to give back to their community in so many ways,” stated Event Chair Barbara Shapiro. “I try to be someone who would have made my Mother and Grandmother, of blessed memory, proud. Because I lost them at a young age, I appreciate the wisdom of my elders. You learn a lot spending time with older people. Hearing their stories of love, overcoming hardships, their successes, and family dynamics, can inspire you to avoid or embrace those aspects of life. They are truly an inspiration and are role models for our generation and our children’s generation to look up to and Ygal Sonenshine with Henry Walker aspire to,” Shapiro continued. This event honored “8 Over 80” exemplary Orange County philanthropists, who are role models for charitable giving and the spirit that makes such generosity possible. Heritage Pointe believes that this kind of life-long generous charitable giving not only benefits the Orange County community, but enriches and empowers the global community. The distinguished group of “8 Over 80” Honorees recognized at this year’s Gala included Leona Aronoff-Sadacca, Dr. Doris Chasin, Rose Lacher, Dr. Joe & Barbara Lebovitz, Marlene Mitnick, Dr. Herb Modelevsky, Blossom Siegel, and Polly Sloan. “8 OVER 80” lauds the creativity and significance of the over 80 generation, something our honorees demonstrate every day,” stated Beth Slavin, Director of Philanthropy for Heritage Pointe. “Each honoree vigorously supports worthy causes that continually enrich our community and inspire individuals. With 30 % of the U.S. population expected to reach 80 or older by 2030, “8 OVER 80” reflects the changing times in which we live. This event captures what Heritage Pointe is all about – celebrating the vitality of older adults, honoring their lives, and respecting their individuality. We asked the Orange County Jewish community to nominate these philanthropic individuals from our community, therefore, Heritage Pointe did not select these individuals. These honorees, who are in their ninth and tenth decades, continue to live lives of remarkable achievement, vitality, and civic engagement. During the Gala a very special and touching video was shown, produced by Josh Friedman, which gave all of the guests a snapshot into the lives of these extraordinary honorees. This event is certainly one that inspires us all to do the very best Honoree Dr. Herb Modelevsky Honoree Leona Aronoff-Sadacca we can do for our community,” Slavin continued. with wife Loretta Modelevsky. Scott Siegel, who was recognized last year along with his wife Leslie, as with husband Joe Sadacca. Heritage Pointe’s Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree, presented the “8 Over 80” distinguished Honorees with their special awards during the Gala. “This celebration represents all that the Orange County Jewish community should be proud of -- a rich heritage of giving, a heritage of caring for others – a heritage of repairing the world one mitzvah at a time,” stated Heritage Pointe CEO Mike Silverman. “These honorees have demonstrated decades of caring and commitment and we are all blessed to have them among us. Heritage Pointe is humbled, as well as, honored to have recognized these wonderful Honorees at our 28th Annual Gala,” Silverman continued. Brought back by popular demand, the evening’s entertainment was provided by the highly-acclaimed Bonnie Foster Productions, featuring its high-energy seven-piece band performing a variety of music for all guests to enjoy. Heritage Pointe is a nonprofit, residential community of 225 residents in Mission Viejo, California, providing independent, assisted-living, and memory care services for the elderly, while incorporating Jewish traditions and lifestyles. Heritage Pointe offers specialized social, cultural, religious, and educational activities for its residents. Contributions from this event will benefit the Heritage Fund, which provides assistance to residents who are in financial need. Heritage Pointe’s vision is simple, to foster an exceptional environment based on Jewish values where all community members, including seniors, their families, and volunteers can learn, grow, live well, and flourish. PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated

(approved) The Newport News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people

of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising.

QUARTER PAGE COLOR This month I have terrific low prices on quarter page full color ad packages. Plus you can choose to either pay as you go. But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona Del Mar and Newport Coast? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like these reasonably priced local newspapers which are received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners. This advertising costs you far less money. These five local newspapers are attractive, effective and affordable. Let’s talk today!

ELIEFF, HUSBAND AND WIFE, as Trustor(s), in favor of WASHINGTON MUTUAL BANK, FA, A FEDERAL ASSOCIATION as Beneficiary, WILL SELL AT PUBLIC AUCTION TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER, in lawful money of the United States, all payable at the time of sale, that certain property situated in said County, California describing the land therein as: AS MORE FULLY DESCRIBED IN SAID DEED OF TRUST The property heretofore described is being sold “as is”. The street address and other common designation, if any, of the real property described above is purported to be: 4507 PERHAM ROAD, NEWPORT BEACH, CA 92625 The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address and other common designation, if any, shown herein. Said sale will be made without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the Note(s) secured by said Deed of Trust, with interest thereon, as provided in said Note(s), advances if any, under the terms of the Deed of Trust, estimated fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligations secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of this Notice of Trustee’s Sale is estimated to be $877,109.83 (Estimated). The property offered for sale excludes all funds held on account by the property receiver, if applicable. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
