Nick Haness Pilots Skyhawk and Cosmeo to the Top Two Prizes in the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby
Nick Haness with Skyhawk and Cosmeo with Laura Wasserman, Melissa Brandes and Archie Cox Photos by Captured Moment Friday morning, the Showpark Ranch & Coast Classic kicked off with 25 high performance hunters galloping on the grass in the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby. The class culminated with a double win for owner Laura Wasserman and rider Nick Haness, with champion honors going to Skyhawk and second place to Cosmeo. After picking up both first and second in the classic round, aboard Skyhawk and Cosmeo respectively, Haness maintained his lead with solid second round scores for the one-two victory. Two panels judged the class, the first Jimmy Lee and Jimmy Clapperton and the second Don Stewart Jr. (on his birthday nonetheless!) and Katherine Griffiths. The course, designed by Thomas Hern of Plymouth, Massachusetts, included two high options, a single oxer on a hill, and a delicate two-stride combination. For those who advanced to the handy round, another two high options and a hand gallop played a role in the scoring. Taking both higher options and tight inside turns, Haness used the track to his advantage, earning handy scores of 9 from each judging Page 4
panel, which secured his lead. With Skyhawk’s Derby rider, John French, on the injury list, Haness just stepped into the role this week. He has watched and competed against the talented gelding in numerous derbies. “I’m sorry John is hurt and wish him a speedy recovery,” said Haness. “Skyhawk is lovely to ride. He’s very brave and today I could feel that he was in it to win it.” Along with ribbons and a USHJA cooler and halter, the pair was awarded a pair of Roeckl Sports riding gloves and an EquiFit hunter girth. Sponsored awards also went out to many of the riders and contributors to recognize their outstanding performances. Laura Wasserman received the Balmoral Winning Owner Award, and trainer Archie Cox was the Blue Ribbon Blankets Winning Trainer. Rider Augusta Iwasaki earned the The Plaid Horse Highest Scoring Junior Rider Award, with two rides in the top twelve and a fourth place finish aboard Vanderpump. Megan Kerpsack took home the One K Helmets Highest Scoring Amateur Rider Award on her mount Calandra. Sergio Macias Valdez was

Where in Newport Beach can you enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres with a fine cocktail next to the sound of a rippling stream? That would be at the Environmental Nature Center, of course! On Saturday, June 9 at 5:30 p.m. the ENC will be hosting its annual Summer Soiree. Guests will be supporting environmental education in their community while enjoying a meal catered by the award-winning Anaheim White House restaurant. Established in 1972, the ENC works to connect people with nature and to provide opportunities which create connections with the world outdoors for people of all ages. “Summer Soiree guests return year after year to support a cause they care for deeply,” said Lori Whalen, ENC Assistant Director. “Without our generous supporters, we would not be able to provide quality education through hands-on experience with nature.” During the evening, acoustic music by Tracy and the Blues Makers will
play under a canopy of alder and cypress trees. Guests can even roast marshmallows and make s’mores next to a campfire under the stars. Special items will be up for auction. Last year, one of the items auctioned was the chance to release a rehabilitated barn owl. This year, the ENC has begun construction on its new Nature Preschool. Whalen said, “We believe that developing a love and connection to the natural world is intrinsically connected to protecting and conserving it. [There is] an element of excitement and anticipation to see the fruition of something we’ve all been waiting for so long. Our supporters are excited to see [the school] open, even if they don’t have young children of their own.” Proceeds from the soiree support the ENC’s environmental education programs and will help to provide funds to build Newport Beach’s first nature-based preschool. Casual attire and trail-friendly
shoes are recommended. Doors open at 5:30 pm for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Dinner will be served at 7:00 pm. The cost is $150 per person and $1500 per table. RSVP by June 5 at encenter.org or contact Lori at (949) 645-8489, ext. 103. About the ENC Founded in 1972, the ENC is a fascinating combination of 15 California native plant communities, wildlife habitat, walking trails, and sustainably designed, LEED Platinum certified learning center. For over 40 years, the ENC has been shaped and caressed into a 5-acre landscape for learning, a sanctuary from life’s pressures and a place of preservation and instruction. Serving over 24,000 students and thousands of visitors annually, the ENC is recognized as a leader in science and social science education providing opportunities for increasing our community’s knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the natural world. The ENC recently purchased property to develop a nature play area, and construct our community’s first nature based preschool. With a mission of providing quality education through hands-on experience with nature, the ENC inspires all generations to protect the natural world by serving as our community’s foremost authority on ecological responsibility, sustainable practices and environmental education. The ENC is a non-profit 501(c)-3 public benefit corporation. For more information call 949-645-8489, or visit www.ENCenter.org. The ENC is located at 1601 16th St. in Newport Beach.

Lyndon B. Johnson’s Texas Getaway Ranch!
American presidents seem to have more than one thing in common: they need to get away and escape from the pressure. The ones from Texas have a penchant for ranches, the more cosmopolitan ones like to travel and the ones who come into the presidency with wealth of their own tend to seek out more elegant retreats - and it helps if you happen to own the best of them. Playing golf has always been a popular presidential stress reliever, for after all, isn’t it more socially acceptable to knock the bejeezus out of a ball than the most obnoxious member of the opposing political party? Taking the time to look back in history can produce interesting facts that bring balance to today’s political chaos. Many past presidential terms were steeped in controversy, and Lyndon B. Johnson, who rose from rural Texas high school teacher to 36th President of the United States after the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, was no exception. While Johnson’s Great Society initiatives included major civil rights accomplishments, anti-poverty programs and Medicare, his particular onus was the Vietnam War. Johnson was hounded by the press who he felt had started to question him not
as reporters but as prosecutorial lawyers; students were rioting in the streets and he caught flack from every quadrant on almost every move. Johnson surprised almost everyone when he refused to run for reelection in 1968 paving a path for the presidency of Richard Nixon. One week after the assassination of JFK, Johnson purchased 800 acres outside of Johnson City, Texas with spectacular views. Even though his main home was a 330-acre ranch on the Pedernales River in central Texas, which he purchased from his aunt in 1951 while still a senator, his new ranch was intended as a getaway that would insulate him from the press and the pressures of Washington, D.C. His first ranch was where he met with political leaders and world dignitaries, but he laid down the law that there would be no work and no visitors invited to his newly acquired ranch. Now for sale by the artist and his family who currently own the farm, now downsized to 142 acres, the main three-bedroom home is on a hilltop with 360-degree views from its 1,800-foot elevation. The 2,840-square-foot house is finished in stone and cedar and has been
updated to today’s expectations, enjoys the atmosphere provided by multiple fireplaces and has numerous terraces and porches for outdoor living and taking in the views. One porch has an outdoor shower. Other structures on the ranch include the former presidential airplane hangar which has been turned into a gallery and event venue and the original 1,140-square-foot ranch house from the LBJ years. The listing agent is Dave Murray of DMTX Realty in
association with Coldwell Banker United, Austin, Texas. Own a piece of presidential history where LBJ escaped the pressures of the presidency and the press he so rigorously scorned while in office. His former Johnson City, Texas ranch is now for sale asking $2.8 million. For More Information TopTenRealEstateDeals.com. Source: dmtx.com

Volunteers to Count Native Oysters in Upper Newport Bay’s Manmade Habitats
Graduate students to measure one year of progress protecting marine habitats. Local volunteers will get their feet wet to see how manmade oyster beds are bringing Upper Newport Bay back to life. University students will investigate the shoreline to count native Olympia oysters, collect shell samples and evaluate the state of the oyster beds one year after construction. Since the 1990s, more than 85 percent of the world’s oyster reefs have disappeared according to The Nature Conservancy. In 2017, Coastkeeper used natural materials to build habitat for the nearly extinct native Olympia oysters for the first time. One year into the project, researchers and volunteers will evaluate the benefits of restoring eelgrass and oysters simultaneously to protect the shoreline from erosion and rising sea levels, improve water quality and provide habitat to attract marine life. Shellmaker Rd, Newport Beach, CA 92660: Katie Nichols, Orange County Coastkeeper marine restoration director. 10-12 volunteers will be surveying the shoreline. WHW Celebrates 25th Anniversary; Raises Over $225,000 At Annual Luncheon And Fashion Show Photos by Kait McKay Nonprofit WHW, hosted 370 supporters, volunteers and community members to celebrate 25 iconic years of “empowering employment success” and raised more than $225,000 during its Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show at the Pasea Hotel & Spa in Huntington Beach.. With the theme of “old Hollywood” style and elegance, the event featured silent and live auctions, a gourmet luncheon, an inspiring presentation from a WHW job seeker and a movie-inspired, “black and white” fashion show with fashions from WHW’s retail store, Deja New, which supports WHW with all income directly helping to provide services for WHW job seekers. Guests enjoyed an outdoor, ocean-view reception with martini drinks sponsored by Spa Girls Cocktails. Specialty cocktails included The Marilyn Monroe (Spa Girl Pear Vodka Martini Straight Up), The Cary Grant (Spa Girl Cucumber Vodka Martini Straight Up) and The Hollywood (Spa Girl Cucumber Vodka Martini with Lime Juice and Simple Syrup). Within the ballroom, a three-course lunch was served including a grilled iceberg wedge salad (cherry tomatoes, chives, bacon, gorgonzola and toasted walnut cream); broiled spring chicken and potato au gratin or vegan wild mushroom risotto with asparagus ragout for vegetarians; and panna cotta (shortbread cookie, vanilla panna cotta, mango-pineapple compote) for dessert. Live auction items included an Angels Baseball package of four field MVP tickets and VIP parking to a 2018 home game with four passes to view batting practice prior to the game; two suite tickets to the Shakira concert at the Honda Center on August 31, 2018 and two tickets to the Hall & Oates concert on May 6, 2018 with all-inclusive food and beverages for both events; a stay at a six-bedroom, six-bathroom private villa in Los Cabos in a private, gated community with a pool and spa for seven nights; and a Maserati weekend including three days and two nights use of a Maserati donated by Maserati of Newport Beach. And that’s the best part of the whole day.” At WHW, 91 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to programs and services, more than 80% of job seekers obtain a job within three months and 90% of those keep that job, which increases their household income by over 300%. Want to lose weight? Research proves a big breakfast is the first step If you want to lose weight, you’re not alone. More than half of Americans desire to shed pounds, according to Gallup. This goal inspires people to take action in many ways, from increasing exercise to modifying meals. One thing many people do is skip breakfast in order to lower calorie intake. While this may seem like a good idea to lose weight, research proves otherwise. In fact, eating a big breakfast followed by smaller meals throughout the day is the best method for weight loss. A new study in The Journal of Nutrition investigated the relation between meal frequency and timing and changes in body mass index (BMI). The study found that “eating less frequently, no snacking, consuming breakfast and eating the largest meal in the morning may be effective methods for preventing longterm weight gain.” “When you eat your meal matters,” says Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner. “The best way to eat for energy and weight is to eat a big breakfast, smaller lunch and light dinner because it mimics our days’ activities.” Blatner explains that people are typically most active in the beginning of the day and so need the most fuel then. They slow down as the day progresses, and by dinnertime they need less fuel. “But it’s not just about eating
anything in the morning,” she cautions. “It’s important to pick nutrient-dense foods to fuel your day right.” Blatner provides three tips for creating a wholesome breakfast that will give you energy and support your weight-loss goals: 1. Fruits and veggies Wake up your taste buds and give your body important vitamins by eating a rainbow of colorful fruits and veggies. Try shopping the farmers market for locally sourced in-season produce. A quick frittata with egg and chopped veggies or a smoothie bowl topped with fresh fruit will satisfy. If fresh produce isn’t available, frozen has optimum nutrients so it is a smart alternative. 2. Whole grains Make whole grains part of your breakfast and you’ll feel fuller for longer. Oatmeal is a classic wholegrain breakfast option. Use wholegrain pancake mix to whip up some flapjacks. Bake muffins with wholegrain flour. Make cornbread with whole cornmeal. When shopping for cereal or other breakfast products, look at the label to ensure it’s made with whole grains. 3. Proteins Eggs are a great source of protein and nutrients for breakfast, but not all eggs are created equal. Swap out ordinary eggs for Eggland’s Best eggs, and you’ll get great taste and superior nutritional benefits with 10 times more vitamin E, six times more
vitamin D, more than double the omega-3s, more than double vitamin B12 and 25 percent less saturated fat. Short on time in the morning? Try Make Ahead Breakfast Bowls that can be frozen and microwaved in minutes for a satisfying start to your day. Make Ahead Breakfast Bowls Ingredients: 12 Eggland’s Best eggs (large) 2 pounds Yukon gold potatoes, chopped into 1-inch cubes 1 green pepper, seeded then chopped into 1-inch chunks 1 onion, chopped 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon seasoned salt salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 3 green onions, chopped toppings: tortilla chips, salsa, avocado 6 individual-sized containers with lids Preparation: Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. On a large baking sheet, place potatoes, peppers and onions in a single layer. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with seasoned salt and ground black pepper. Toss until evenly coated. Roast for about 30-40 minutes or until potatoes are golden brown and tender, stirring and rotating pan halfway through cooking. Meanwhile, crack Eggland’s Best
eggs into a large bowl, then season with salt and pepper and whisk until smooth. Heat a large skillet over medium heat then spray with nonstick spray and add eggs. Scramble until the eggs are just barely cooked through and still slightly glossy, then scoop onto a plate and set aside. Divide the potatoes and scrambled eggs evenly between the containers then set aside to cool. Once cool, sprinkle with cheese and green onions, then cover and refrigerate. Freeze any portions that aren’t eaten within three days. To reheat from frozen: microwave for 1 1/2 minutes then stir and continue microwaving until food is reheated, stirring between intervals. Top with optional toppings, then serve. Tip: Store in individualized microwave-safe containers with lids to make these bowls ready to reheat and go. - (BPT)

PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated
(approved) The Newport News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people
of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising.

May is Declared Ultraviolet (UV) Awareness Month
Prevent Blindness, the nation’s oldest eye health and safety organization, has declared May as Ultraviolet (UV) Awareness Month to help educate the public on the dangers that UV exposure may have on vision. UV damage may cause immediate effects, such as a corneal sunburn (photokeratitis). Long hours on the water, for example, without proper eye protection can cause this problem. UV damage has been linked to the development of macular degeneration, cataract, pterygium (a growth on the white part of the eye) and cancer. According to the World Health Organization, different forms of eye cancer may be associated with life-long exposure to the sun. Melanoma is the most frequent malignant cancer of the eyeball, and a common location for basal cell carcinoma is on the eyelids. Adults and children are at risk from UV damage. However, the risk of sun related eyeproblems is higher for people who: • spend long hours in the sun • have certain retina disorders • had cataract surgery (although some artificial lenses do absorb some UV rays) • are on certain medicines, such as tetracycline, sulfa drugs, birth control pills, diuretics and tranquilizers that increase the eye’s sensitivity to light. When purchasing sunglasses, Prevent Blindness recommends consumers always read labels carefully and only buy sunglasses that clearly state that they block 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays. Sunglasses should be worn in conjunction with a brimmed hat. Wrap-around sunglasses are best. For those participating in outdoor sports activities, Prevent Blindness recommends consulting with an eye care professional on eye protection that both blocks UV as well as protects eyes from injury.
“Consistently wearing effective UV eye protection is a habit that we should practice year-round, not just in the warm-weather months. By wearing UV-blocking sunglasses and a visor, we can help protect our vision today and for years to come,” said Jeff Todd, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness. For more information on the dangers of UV exposure and how to choose the best UV protection, please visit the Prevent Blindness dedicated Web page at http://www.preventblindness.org/protectyour-eyes-sun or call (800) 331-2020. Fatigued? Low energy? Chronic pain? Migraine? Cold hands and feet due to poor blood circulation? Rejoice. Crystal Heat Therapy is now available in Newport Beach! Infrared Crystal Heat Therapy is a soothing, safe and gentle process that starts with one of nature’s most proven cornerstones for protection and health remedies - crystalized quartz. Once these crystals are stimulated by infrared heat, healing wavelengths penetrate deeply into the bloodstream. A growing body of clinical evidence supports the use of far infrared as a non-invasive health-promoting therapy. More recent studies in China explored far infrared therapy as a method to improve inadequate blood circulation in patients with vascular access malfunction, a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in hemodialysis patients. Study subjects treated with far infrared showed measurable blood flow improvement after a single session. Test results were consistent after one year of therapy.* *US National Library of Medicine.
