The 37th Baroque Music Festival takes a novel approach, June 18-25

With “A Festival of Novelties,” the 37th annual Baroque Music Festival, Corona del Mar, promises a fresh approach, unique elements and unusual repertoire in a program sure to delight its fortunate audiences. Over an eight day period, June 18–25, 2017, an extraordinary group of Baroque musicians will perform at venues in Corona del Mar and Newport Beach in five individual concerts. This year’s inspired program is the creation of world renowned Baroque violinist Elizabeth Blumenstock, the Festival’s artistic director. Blumenstock has performed throughout the U.S. and abroad playing a 17th-century Guarneri violin. She serves as concertmaster with California’s finest period ensembles and teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music as well as the Juilliard School of Music. Below is a sneak preview of this year’s exciting program: Sunday, June 18 ∙ Newport Harbor Lutheran Church, 4 p.m. All a Bout: Dialog in Music & Fencing Highlighting an all-string afternoon of Baroque concertos from Bach, Biber and Schmelzer is a short fencing demonstration set to music. The Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 by J.S. Bach provides a familiar accent to this concert. Monday, June 19 ∙ Saint Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church, 8 p.m. Page 2

Four Viols at Play A delightful consort of violas da gamba features in a program of works from 16th- and 17th-century English and Northern German composers, including Purcell, Byrd and Jenkins. Wednesday, June 21 ∙ Sherman Library & Gardens, 8 p.m. Music from Monticello Thomas Jefferson’s vast music library provides an authentic source for a program of chamber and vocal music, featuring soprano Jennifer Ellis Kampani, as well as relevant readings from the period. Friday, June 23 ∙ Sherman Library & Gardens, 8 p.m. Beyond Baroque Elizabeth Blumenstock (violin), David Shostac (flute), Timothy Landauer (cello), Andrew McIntosh (violin, viola) and Lara Wickes (oboe) perform a program of Classical chamber works by J.C. Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Cambini and Albrechtsberger. Sunday, June 25 ∙ St. Mark Presbyterian Church, 4 p.m. Festival Finale: A Quire of Choirs In this program, subtitled “Polyphonic Music from the Edge of the Baroque,” instrumentalists playing cornettos, sackbuts and strings join with vocalists to present majestic works of Gabrieli and Monteverdi, in collaboration with Tesserae, a Los Angeles based Baroque ensemble. A special preconcert performance of Italian folk music begins at 3:15 p.m. Audience Perks

The Newport News

In addition to the concert programs, audiences are invited to enjoy Baroque music performed al fresco, beginning 45 minutes before curtain time, by the South Coast Brass — except on June 25, when a special event is planned instead. Following each concert performance, audience members and musicians enjoy mingling for conversation and refreshment at a wine and waters reception. Information and Tickets The Baroque Music Festival offers a subscription for all five concerts at $280 that provides premium seating at each event and a private post concert dinner following the Festival Finale on Sunday, June 25. Additional information about the 2017 Baroque Music Festival, as well as ticket sales for this year’s series or single concerts (ranging from $30 to $50),

may be found at the Festival website www.bmf-cdm.org or by calling (949) 760-7887. About the Festival Since 1981, the Baroque Music Festival, Corona del Mar, has evolved as both an esteemed and popular cultural institution in Orange County, California. Acclaimed instrumentalists and vocal soloists assemble for the annual Festival in June, performing primarily on period instruments in intimate settings. Concert goers have described the performances as “rapturous” and “riveting”; music reviewers from the Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register and other local publications consistently offer glowing reviews. The Festival’s all volunteer Board of Directors is committed to presenting high quality Baroque music every summer.

ENVIRONMENTAL NATURE CENTER PRESENTS SUMMER PROGRAM FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS

Children have fun and make friends while gaining leadership skills in an outdoor, hands-on setting The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) will present a summer program for middle school students, called “Order of the Raven.” Beginning June 26, 2017, the eight day long experience is an opportunity for students entering 6th, 7th and 8th grade to learn life skills, get in touch with their innate capacity for contribution, and prepare for the transitions ahead. Ravens will practice useful life skills such as tracking, fire making -- even writing thank-you notes -- in a safe, cooperative environment. Order of the Raven is separate from the ENC’s regular Nature Camp (where campers range from kindergarten to 6th grade), Ravens will spend a little time almost every day teaching younger campers a skill. They will learn a new skill one day, and have the opportunity to teach that skill the next day. “The Order of the Raven teaches valuable leadership and practical skills,” said ENC Education Coordinator Corina Silva. “We are excited to encourage our Ravens to

challenge themselves, explore new ideas, and learn new skills.” Ravens have the opportunity to do activities they couldn’t when they were younger, like perform a fish necropsy, or venture out into the

community. Focused on establishing independence in the suburban jungle, Ravens will go on walking field trips to local businesses within a mile of the ENC for “behind the scenes” tours. On their last day of camp Ravens

will be the Leaders in Training, assisting Camp Teachers with younger campers. Afterwards they will walk to the Newport Aquatic Center and go kayaking to celebrate.

The Steps on How to Barbeque Successfully Trying to barbecue can be a difficult task; however, you are definitely going to enjoy the nice food that will be available to you when you cook it all completely the right way that you should have. You not only need to have the right type of steak, but you also need the right kinds of equipment and knowledge. If you are one of many people that has absolutely no idea on how to barbecue, then there are a few things you should know. Grilling barbecue tends to be pretty tough for a couple of people, but in reality, it happens to be very easy. As long as you have the right tools to grilling, you can then easily make perfect barbecue. Simple Tips On How To Barbecue - Properly Marinate The Steak Marinating the steak could take anywhere, from 12 hours or more just for it to have the sauce and ingredients really cooked into the steak. You can marinate it with anything that you choose, and usually a friend or somebody you may know may recommend a certain type of sauces to marinate it with. However, you really need to consider using garlic, coarsely, basil leaves, lemon, vegetable oil, red wine vinegar, and then adding all of that together with your steak. Let it rest under a foil for the night, and then cook it the following day. Page 4

- Right Quantity Make sure that you use just the ingredients for the sauce. Don’t forget to have a nice set of steaks, and have enough for everybody at the party. Just keeping in mind the right quantity can help you out a lot. What Do You Need To Make The Perfect Barbecue? - Barbecue Side Dishes Some of the best barbecue side dishes are Cajun Deveiled Eggs, Baked Sweet Potatoe Fries, and grilled Vegetable Kabobs. You can use whatever you want as a side dish. Your overall goal should be to use something that everybody is going to like, not to mention be made in a good way. If you use the most popular side dish but you make it the wrong way, then you need to use something else. - Clean Utensils Make sure that you use the right utensils that are also very clean. Whether a clean spatula or a clean grill, make sure that you clean it all up completely. If it is not all that clean, then you may make the mistake of dirty or soapy types of steak. Aside from just clean utensils, you really need a good type of grill that is still up to date. Keep all of your ingredients near you and get ready to start cooking. Helpful Grilling Tips

The Newport News

- Choose The Right Cut Of Meat Did you know that some cuts of meat are better for grilling than others? Many people like to grill strip steaks, but it is all a matter of opinion. It actually depends on you, as there are many types of meat, so you should try to experiment. Don’t just try one type of steak like Filet Mignon without trying the others. See what tastes the best, is the easiest to cook, and also the most affordable. - Don’t Touch It Avoid touching your steak while it is cooking. Try to use your spatula only a few times, and then flip it when you notice that it is starting to burn. Don’t touch it too much while it is still cooking. - Use Charcoal Using the ordinary gas from the grill could add that gassy type of taste to your steak. Try using a nice hardwood charcoal, similar to what is used in the chimneys at home. These can give that natural smell and taste without that aura of gas being inside of the steak.

- Room Temperature If you would like for your food to smell and taste great, keep them at room temperature before you plan on cooking them. The fridge may be a good place to keep them during the marinating proccess, but once the morning rises, keeping it out in a safe place where no bugs can get inside is a great way to keep them cool right before they get cooked. These tips are definitely going to help you on becoming the next barbecue master. While it does take time to churn out steak repeatedly with no troubles, it is definitely going to be difficult to be good at it after only one day. This is why you really need to consider just learning and having fun. Keep all of the tips above for getting the perfect steak that everybody is going to enjoy eating.

Simple Tips to Replenish Your Body The environment’s natural elements can take a toll on the body. However, taking time to refill what has been depleted from your body, such as moisturizing skin and hair, can make you feel healthier and more beautiful. A similar approach can also help make your teeth stronger and make your smile healthier. Though busy days may make extensive health and beauty routines feel unrealistic, there are simple ways to make them more manageable. * Think of the time you dedicate to taking care of yourself as an opportunity to unwind and relax, rather than a chore or another item to check off that never-ending to-do list. * Look for activities that deliver in multiple ways, such as yoga, which helps tone your body while giving your mind a chance to slow down and rejuvenate. * Instead of trying to cram a full body wellness session into a single day, schedule activities that don’t need to be performed daily over the course of a week. Not only does that spread your “you-time” farther, it makes fitting it all in more doable. While a hectic lifestyle can affect the specifics of your health and beauty routine, the tips below are a great way for nearly everyone to get started: Exfoliate. Scrubbing away spent skin cells and the dust and grime of daily life from your face and body allows fresh, healthy cells to grow in their place. After exfoliating, make sure to follow up with a quality moisturizer to smooth and replenish the moisture in your skin. Rejuvenate. Using a hair mask gives your hair a smooth and glossy appearance, making it feel strong.

Similarly, regularly applying facial masks also gives the skin a healthy glow and smoother complexion. Protect. In between visits to the dental hygienist, you can continue to polish and strengthen your enamel at home. One option is Colgate Enamel Health Toothpaste, which helps replenish the natural calcium in your teeth and gently polishes for stronger, healthy enamel. “By polishing our teeth, hygienists go beyond ‘cleaning’ to remove stains and help smooth out enamel, which prevents bacteria from sticking,” said Kristy Menage Bernie, dental hygienist and Colgate Enamel Health Spokesperson. “By adding a toothpaste like Colgate Enamel

Health to your morning routine, you can proactively care for your enamel and help maintain the work your hygienist does between visits to help get a beautiful healthy smile.” To learn more about how to help maintain the work your hygienist does in between visits, visit www. colgateenamelhealth.com. Make time for meditation. Take time out of your busy day to sit quietly and mediate. Centering the mind can help relieve stress, improving your overall mental well-being. Ultimately, setting aside a little time each day to focus on yourself can result in a happier, healthier and more beautiful you.

Barbecue may not be the road to world peace, but it’s a great start. ~Anthony Bourdain

FIVE FAMOUS CHARACTERS WILL CHARM THE CHILDREN AT THE 59th ANNUAL GARDEN GROVE STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL Strawberry Festival Will Be Honoring Jack Wallin A local Volunteer Five famous characters will be on hand to charm the children at the 59th annual Garden Grove Strawberry Festival on May 28th, 2017. Knott’s Berry Farms’ Snoopy will return for his eighth year to thrill the special needs families on Special Kids Day and will return to ride in the Saturday, May 28th parade. This will be the second year the festival parade will have two Minions from Despicable Me and Wiley the Wolf from Great Wolf Lodge. The new addition is the popular Poop Daddy from the new soon-to-be-released Emoji movie.

Instead of riding in the parade, this year the two Minions will be on festival grounds from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. near the Courtyard Center ready to have their photos taken with kids of all ages. The festival will be held Memorial Day Weekend Friday, May 26th through Monday, May 29th, 2017. Friday hours are 1:00 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free. The four-day event, which is the second largest city festival in the Western United States, will be held at the Village Green between Main Street and Euclid Avenue in downtown Garden Grove. Last year’s attendance was over 300,000. In his late 80s, Jack Wallin has served continuously on the festival board for 59 years. He says he has remained on the board because he likes the people and because it is for a good cause: helping local charities. As the board member in charge of grounds and rides, Jack spends two solid weeks every year setting up the festival. He coordinates layout

and ride setup with the carnival company, and works the grounds all four days of the huge Memorial Day weekend event. Jack says he plans to resign when he physically can no longer do his job. Donations to date have topped $6.5 million. “I’m honored to have been part of an organization that has done so much good for the community,” he says, “last year raising over $150,000 for local charities, student scholarships and youth projects.” The festival also treats over 2,000 special needs kids to a day of free rides and food. In addition, he works at Kiwanisland tending the grounds and handling reservations. He has served the Boys and Girls Club of Garden Grove, the Soroptimist Club and others, and has been honored often for his outstanding community service, including Cypress College Americana Citizen of the Year from Garden Grove, Garden Grove Man of the Year, Garden Grove Kiwanian of the Year, and Garden Grove Elks Lodge Citizen of the Year. Barbecue Sauce, an American Flavor Tradition By Mike Thayer It’s grilling season, BBQ season, it’s time to fire up the smoker, the gas grill, the portable Weber, rub two sticks together, it doesn’t matter - put some meat on the fire! And what is the most popular accompaniment for a plethora of meats cooked in the great outdoors? No silly, not ketchup, its barbecue sauce! The person who invented BBQ sauce is unknown, but whoever he was, he was a genius! References to the sauce started appearing in 17th century English and French literature about the formation of the American colonies. The rest is history and boy has BBQ sauce been kicked up a notch with all kinds of flavors and varieties created over the last 400+ years! A traditional flavoring for pork, beef and chicken, sauce can range from watery to thick, from being heavy on the vinegar to being loaded with spice. Heck, there’s even mustard and mayonnaise based BBQ sauces. It’s a regional thing, there’s Carolina BBQ, Tennessee whiskey BBQ, Texas BBQ and the favorite of yours truly, Kansas City BBQ. What is your favorite sauce? Kansas City BBQ style: This is

a thick, rich tomato based sauce that’s got some spice but is heavier on the sweet. Tomato, brown sugar and vinegar are the base ingredients. It doesn’t really penetrate the meat and is more like a frosting than a marinade. It glazes REAL nice though when put on the meat about 10 minutes before pulling off the grill, a beautiful finish. This is the most popular style of sauce in the U.S. and what you see the most of in the bottled varieties on the grocery store shelf. Be careful with the store bought stuff though! The high sugar content of the “ready” varieties tend to burn real quick so keep an eye on your dinner. Texas BBQ style: This has more kick than Kansas City style. It has less tomato, less sugar and a lot more spice such as cumin, black pepper, chili pepper, and even chili powder. Meat drippings and hot sauce - Tabasco - are always a part of this style and fresh veggies like green bell pepper and onion are often added. East Carolina mop: This simple but tasty sauce was pioneered by the African slaves of Scottish settlers in the region. It’s a straight forward combination of hot pepper flakes, ground black pepper and vinegar. The

reason it’s called a mop is because this thin concoction is literally mopped - basted - on the meat throughout the cooking process, the flavor really penetrates! With little if any sugar and no tomato in this style, East Carolina mop is a sharp contrast to other sauces. Western Carolina dip: From the hilly areas of North Carolina, most American sauces can trace their roots to this one. The recipe usually consists of a base of black pepper blended with tomato paste or tomato sauce, or ketchup, with vinegar added to balance it out. Like the East Carolina mop, this is a thin sauce that is mopped on the meat throughout the cooking process. South Carolina mustard style: This is a whole new BBQ sauce experience. Early German settlers developed this one and while good on chicken, its tailor made for pork. A little thicker than its Carolina cousin sauces, a simple recipe consists of mustard, vinegar, spices and a little sugar. Fantastic on a pulled pork sandwich topped with coleslaw. Tennessee Whiskey style: Made

famous by the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Barbecue Invitational, this style has become so popular it now deserves its own category. This combination of vinegar, whiskey, molasses, spices, and Worcestershire sauce gives BBQ a whole new flavor profile. And BBQ sauce isn’t just for pork, beef or chicken anymore! Try the Western Carolina dip on grilled shrimp or fish. Put your favorite style on a pizza instead of traditional tomato sauce. If lamb isn’t your favorite, try it again with some Tennessee Whiskey sauce! And here’s a personal side dish favorite, toss some grilled cauliflower florets, baby carrots, baby portabella mushrooms and bacon bits together with some Kansas City style sauce. Delicious! Get your tongs out!

The Laguna Playhouse Gala Raises Record $600,000 Photos by: Patrick and Peggy O’Donnell The Laguna Playhouse annual fundraising gala was held at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach with the theme Theatre Changes Lives. Around 381 supporters, guests and VIP’s raised a record $600,000 in support of the Playhouse’s mission to enrich lives through the magic of live theatre, to provide educational opportunities for children and adults, and to create experiences that stimulate cultural and social interaction and inspire our community. Proceeds from the event help cover the operating costs of the 96-year old icon, one of the oldest continuing operating theaters west of the Mississippi. Within the funds raised that evening, $90,000 was raised for the Suzanne and James Mellor Laguna Playhouse Tribute Fund, which will provide theatre experiences for youth by providing tickets to performances and to cover the cost of transporting youth groups to the theatre. Arriving guests were greeted to live piano music. Highlights from the evening included: a VIP Reception sponsored by First American Trust featuring hors d’ouevres and live music, the critically acclaimed Laguna Playhouse Youth Theatre welcoming guests with a special musical presentation of “Consider Yourself” from the play “Oliver”. The celebratory event was co-chaired by Kathryn Burton Gray and Laguna Playhouse Trustee Glenn E. Gray who led this great success with the most amount of money raised at a Playhouse gala in history. The event was sold out three weeks before the event date with special accommodations being made to add in an extra sixty attendees. Gray welcomed celebrated Orange County community and business leaders with a champagne toast to 96 successful theatrical years, and honoring Suzanne and James Mellor for their decades of philanthropy and leadership for arts in Laguna Beach. Suzanne’s touching remarks recalled how, growing up in Detroit at age 10, her sanctuary was hearing the Detroit Symphony perform. Jim noted, “We give and we also get, with a big multiplier. We feel privileged to serve and be part of the Playhouse. It’s especially rewarding to be honored for something you love to do.” The event featured a Nolet’s Bar where guests enjoyed signature Nolet cocktails. An amazing array of silent and live auction items ranging from Art & Jewelry, Wine and Spirits, Chef’s Tables and luxurious travel were available for bid throughout the night. The opportunity drawing sponsor, Winston’s Crown Jewelers, contributed three stunning pieces of jewelry and 150 boxes filled with a piece of jewelry or a Winston’s Crown Jewelers gift certificate. Unique live auction items included: Surfing with a Star Gregory Harrison (winner Lou Rohl); naming the Playhouse’s bar and signature cocktail for the new season (the Irvine Company president Ray Wirta winner), one-time walk-on roles of Hairspray and the holiday Panto Aladdin. Auctioneer Zack Krone led guests in an entertaining fundraising segment, “Fund A Need,” where the audience learned how their donations materialized into full blown production elements. The evening wrapped up with guests dancing to music performed by DC Babylon and the Hanging Garden, a full Chicago style band complete with a horn ensemble. Founded in 1920, the historic Laguna Playhouse is one of the oldest continuously-operating not-for-profit theatres on the West Coast and is proud to be an active participant in the celebrated Laguna Beach arts community. From classic plays and musical comedies to the current off-Broadway smash, cutting edge and traditional music exhibitions, dance festivals and stand-up comedy performances, Laguna Playhouse brings the magical experience of the performing arts direct to over 80,000 patrons each season. The Playhouse has featured many talented performers on stage, including Ed Asner, Leslie Caron, Hershey Felder, Harrison Ford, Val Kilmer, Dan Lauria, Wendie Malick, Rita Rudner, Charles Shaughnessy, Loretta Swit, and Bette Davis. Check off your backyard bucket list: seed, weed and feed

Burning, Tingling, Numbness or Pain? Don’t Suffer Any Longer!

Proven Medical Neuropathy Treatment with an 87% Success Rate Available in Newport Beach Do you suffer from:

From Sunday picnics and impromptu barbecues to games of catch, make your lawn center stage this spring. Everyone longs for a lush, green lawn, but many homeowners aren’t sure how to achieve it. In fact, although 81 percent of Americans do their own lawn care, 69 percent say their lawns could be better, and nearly a third aren’t sure how to grow a healthy lawn, according to a survey by the National Association of Landscape Professionals. A strong, green lawn can give back to you in so many ways and getting there is easier than you think. The lawn health experts at Scotts(R) say the keys to a great lawn are seed, weed and feed. Seed Did winter do a number on your lawn? Heavy foot traffic, plows, snow shovels and salt can damage your turf, and after the first melt visible dirt spots and dead zones may appear. When spring temperatures reach 60 degrees or higher, seeds will germinate best and it’s time to repair winter damage. Patch and repair your lawn to fill in bare spots, help crowd out weeds and strengthen your grass to help withstand heat and drought. Start by removing debris and dead grass in the surrounding area, and loosen hard soil, this will help grass seedlings take root. Evenly apply a quality seed, like Scotts(R) EZ Seed(R), so the bare area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible. Be sure to only apply the recommended amount so that seedlings have enough space to access water and nutrients. Scotts(R) EZ Seed(R) is a combination of fertilizer, grass seed and super absorbent mulch that is guaranteed to grow grass anywhere with proper care, whether on a hill or slope, or in a densely-shaded area.

Weed Preserve your healthy and beautiful lawn by keeping it free of weeds. Common weeds like dandelions and clover can choke out healthy grass. Therefore, it’s important to address weeds in spring so they won’t have a chance to thrive in summer. Removing weeds can be a challenge, especially if any roots are left behind as they can quickly grow into a new plant. Get rid of weeds by using a weed-control product like the improved Scotts(R) Turf Builder(R) Weed & Feed. It is formulated with up to two times more powerful control of dandelions and clover compared to the previous formula, so it kills weeds and feeds grass to make it green and thick. Feed Continuing to feed your established lawn is critical to its nutrition and overall success. Your lawn requires feeding about every six weeks, and its nutritional needs will vary throughout the season. Choosing the right food at the right time can help ensure your lawn stays thick and green all spring and summer. For example, if your yard needs a boost towards the end of spring use Scotts(R) Green Max(RM) Lawn Food, it provides your lawn with essential nutrients, like iron, that give grass its rich green color in just three days. No two lawns are alike. A number of factors including where you live or whether you have a sunny or shady backyard affect how to treat your grass. Not sure which products are right? Download the MyLawn app from Scotts(R) for a personalized care plan that will help you achieve your desired results. To make the most out of your green space, visit www.scotts.com for inspiration and information on lawn care products. - (BPT)
