Carly Anthony and Chacco Claim the Prize in the $60,000 Grand Prix of California, presented by Equ Lifestyle Boutique

Carly Anthony and Chacco with Monica Ward, Simone Gauci and Lauren Davis from Equ Lifestyle Boutique, Melissa Brandes and Robert Ridland Photos by Captured Moment The $60,000 Grand Prix of California, presented by Equ Lifestyle Boutique, was one of those rare classes where the best score in the first round could not be matched, so the ribbons were awarded without a jump-off. Carly Anthony and her mount Chacco, owned by Neil Jones Equestrian Inc, finished with one time fault for the win. Richard Spooner and Rancho Corazon LLC’s Quirado RC were the only other pair to keep all rails in the cups, and finished in second place with three on the clock. Formulated by the internationallyacclaimed Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela, the course took advantage of the Showpark Grand Prix Field’s size while keeping a tight time allowed of 83 seconds. Riders faced two tricky lines up the diagonals, the first a two-stride combination to a delicate vertical and the second a wide oxer leading into two consecutive onestrides, which when ridden carefully would cost time on the clock. “The time was tight,” said runnerup and grand prix veteran Richard Spooner. “It’s probably been ten years since I’ve been in a class that didn’t go to a jump-off round. That doesn’t Page 2

happen very often.” Nonetheless, Anthony was proud to have ridden Chacco to an almost fault-free round, leaving all the jumps in the cups and stopping the clock just .23 seconds over the time allowed. The young professional was grateful for the opportunity to challenge herself as a rider. “This entire week, Leopoldo has been setting courses that were short on time and a bit technical, and that’s how we had to ride it today,” she noted. Anthony and Chacco have been partners since the beginning of the year, and she speaks highly of the gelding. “Chacco is a sweet and kindhearted horse, he really wants to do a good job every day. No matter the distance, he will try his best to have a clean round.” During the ribbon ceremony, Blenheim EquiSports also celebrated longtime employee and friend, Nani Luebke, as she retires as Awards Coordinator after eighteen years. Her tireless attention to detail and hard work has played a significant role in the success of the shows over the years. the Grand Prix, with Jason McArdle and Fairbanks Valley Farm’s Elicole claiming a victory in the $5,000 Interactive Mortgage Horses 10 & Under Futurity Classic. Of the ten clear horse and rider combinations from round one, Jason and Elicole were fastest in the jump-off with a time of 38.25. McArdle was determined, taking quick inside turns and galloping between jumps to shave seconds off the clock. Keri Potter and Jiminy Cricket were the closest to catching him in 40.40s for second place.

Blenheim EquiSports, an equestrian event management company based in San Juan Capistrano, CA, produces events in three locations: San Juan Capistrano, Del Mar and Las Vegas, NV. The events include USEF “Premier” rated hunter-jumper shows featuring multiple grand prix events, a Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ North American League event, USHJA International Hunter Derbies, Pony Finals, Medal Finals and more. Why Do We Celebrate Memorial Day? The History of Memorial Day

by Amanda Austin Memorial Day is more than just a weekend off from work, an excuse to throw a picnic, or a reason to take a weekend trip, it is a national holiday. The history behind Memorial Day seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle throughout the years. With May 27th growing closer, take time to familiarize yourself with the history of Memorial Day, and why we celebrate this holiday. Memorial Day, originally known as “Decoration Day,” was established on May 5 1868 by General John Logan, the national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. The first observation of Memorial Day took place on May 30th 1868, by decorating the graves of fallen Union and Confederate soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery. Here is an excerpt from General Logan’s “General Orders No. 11,” officially declaring “Decoration Day.” “The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of re-

spect as circumstances may permit.” New York was the first state to officially recognize Memorial Day as a Holiday in 1873, and all of the Northern states had followed suit by 1890. The Southern states didn’t recognize Memorial Day until after World War 1 when it was changed from recognizing soldiers who lost their lives fighting in the Civil War, to soldiers who lost their lives fighting in any war America participated in. The reason that students and employees are given the day off on

Memorial Day, is so they can properly observe the holiday. When the holiday was originally established nationally it was intended to give patrons the opportunity to visit the graves of our fallen soldiers, attend memorials, fly the American flag at half staff until noon, and acknowledge the “National Moment of Remembrance” at 3:00 PM. The “National Moment of Remembrance” is when everyone has a moment of silence and if you are in a public place “Taps” is played. So, this year on Memorial weekend

take a moment to remember why you don’t have to go to work or school. If you are taking a trip with your family, make your rest stop at a memorial or Veteran’s cemetery and observe the men who have fought for our country. If you are having a get together at your home, or attend one at someone else’s home, give a little speech at 3:00 and call for a moment of silence to remind your friends and family why you are all able to get together that weekend.

Some Safety Tips from BoatUS After the brutal winter there’s a mad rush for boaters to get back on the water for the summer boating season’s annual kick-off, Memorial Day weekend. But the nation’s largest recreational boaters group, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) says “not so fast,” and urges boaters to be prepared by following these five tips: Ensure all safety gear – life jackets, radio, flares and other items – are ready to go. If you have the newer, more comfortable inflatable life jackets, be sure to open them up, inspect and test by filling with air and let them sit overnight to ensure they will keep you buoyant. A free Vessel Safety Check is offered by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and US Power Squadrons can also be requested by

going to www.safetyseal.net. Avoid a springtime sinking by ensuring any drive gear such as outdrive bellows (inboard/outboard), shaft packings (inboards), livewell and engine cooling plumbing, or through-hull fittings are not cracked, rotted or severely corroded. Boaters, in their rush to get back on the water, sometimes take short cuts on these critical safety and spring commissioning items that end up biting them on their undersides. Follow the step-by-step free spring commissioning checklist at www. BoatUS.com/springchecklist. For freshwater boaters: If you keep your boat in a marina or dock that has electricity service, test and inspect to ensure no stray current is leaking into the water where it could potentially lead to

Electric Shock Drowning, an often misunderstood and overlooked safety item. See http://www.BoatUS. com/esdexplained for more. Have a back up plan to get home in case your boat won’t get you back to the ramp or dock. On water or on the road assistance for a disabled boat trailer can be summoned with the free BoatUS Towing App, available at www.BoatUS.com/app. Have fun and make everyone an important part of your crew. In some areas, boating traffic could be significantly up so use the extra sets of eyes as lookouts, share the sunblock and have plenty of water aboard to stay hydrated. If alcohol is in your plans, celebrate the opening of the season back at the dock or home where you’ll be in a much safer spot.

Start the Summer off Right - Memorial Day Safety Tips!

Next weekend is Memorial Day Weekend. “Let’s all take part by being responsible for our self and others says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna.” Here are a few safety tips: Travel Safety • Buckle up, slow down, don’t drive impaired. • Be well rested, alert and patient; give your full attention to the road. Do not text and drive! • Let someone know your destination, your route, and when you

expect to arrive. Water Safety Paddle Board? Jet Ski? It’s all harmless fun, right? Fun, certainly. But think before you play. Whatever the activity, observe these three cardinal rules: • Wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. • Know local weather conditions. Make sure the water and weather conditions are safe. Let others know when you hit the water and when you plan to return!

• Learn to swim. Do not swim alone or leave children unattended! Let someone know where and what time your leaving and intend on returning! Grill Safety This fun seasonal ritual has a flip side, though—namely, an onset of injuries and home fires due to careless cooking practices. Here are some tips you can follow to stay safe while enjoying those tasty treats at your cookout. • Never grill indoors or unattended

– not in your house, camper, tent or any enclosed area. • Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, the deck, tree branches, or anything that could catch fire. Hot grease or ashes could spill from the grill onto the wooden deck or into dry leaves or grass. For additional safety tips go to: http://www.mass.gov/ocabr/docs/ advisories/safe-memorial-day-weekend.pdf Happy Memorial Day and Be Safe!

Elvis Presley’s Honeymoon House of Tomorrow!

By the time he married Priscilla Presley, Elvis could afford to lease or buy just about any house he wanted in any location that appealed to him. After his courtship and marriage to Priscilla, together they chose balmy Palm Springs, California and leased the much talked about House of Tomorrow for their honeymoon. It was the ideal 1960’s home to begin their new life together and if walls could talk, the kitchen might still have a lot to say about peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Presley met Priscilla in Bad Nauheim, Germany in 1959 during his service in the Army when she was only 14-years-old, the daughter of an Army officer and his wife who had taken Priscilla with them to a party at Elvis’s home. Since his fame had already been well established by that time, the military’s social standards of officers not fraternizing with enlisted men was likely suspended for the event. Although she was only 14, Elvis couldn’t get her out of his mind

and their budding relationship turned into a marriage proposal just before Christmas in 1966 - seven years later. They were married at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas in May, 1967. Elvis leased The House of Tomorrow as their honeymoon house on a oneyear lease and their child, Lisa Marie, was born exactly nine months later. Futuristic even for today, the mid-century modern house-in-theround is on the market with walls of glass overlooking a secluded pool terrace and views of the Santa Rosa Mountains and the Coachella Valley. The 5,000-square-foot house has five bedrooms and five baths and comes with 1.16 acres of land with private garden, tennis court and orchard in addition to the swimming pool. The home was designed by modernist architect William Krisel and featured in a 1962 Look magazine article as “The House of Tomorrow,” an example of the coming of age of modern architecture. The design is created out of four circular living

areas on three levels with a curved wall of peanut-brittle stonework, a round kitchen island and a round freestanding fireplace in the middle of the circular living room. In addition to the five bedrooms and five baths, the open-concept living and dining rooms and bar are sized for entertaining and the kitchen includes a breakfast bar. Now on the market at $5.9 million,

the House of the Future is also wellknown as the honeymoon hideaway of the King of Rock ‘n Roll which he leased in 1966-1967 for $21,000 for the year. The listing agent is Mary Kay Nibley of Rodeo Realty in Beverly Hills. For More Information TopTenRealEstateDeals.com. Source: rodeore.com

Environmental Nature Center to host Summer Soiree

Where in Newport Beach can you enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres with a fine cocktail next to the sound of a rippling stream? That would be at the Environmental Nature Center, of course! On Saturday, June 9 at 5:30 p.m. the ENC will be hosting its annual Summer Soiree. Guests will be supporting environmental education in their community while enjoying a meal catered by the award-winning Anaheim White House restaurant. Established in 1972, the ENC works to connect people with nature and to provide opportunities which

create connections with the world outdoors for people of all ages. “Summer Soiree guests return year after year to support a cause they care for deeply,” said Lori Whalen, ENC Assistant Director. “Without our generous supporters, we would not be able to provide quality education through hands-on experience with nature.” During the evening, acoustic music by Tracy and the Blues Makers will play under a canopy of alder and cypress trees. Guests can even roast marshmallows and make s’mores next to a campfire under the stars.

Special items will be up for auction. Last year, one of the items auctioned was the chance to release a rehabilitated barn owl. This year, the ENC has begun construction on its new Nature Preschool. Whalen said, “We believe that developing a love and connection to the natural world is intrinsically connected to protecting and conserving it. [There is] an element of excitement and anticipation to see the fruition of something we’ve all been waiting for so long. Our supporters are excited to see [the school] open, even if they don’t have young children of their own.” Proceeds from the soiree support the ENC’s environmental education programs and will help to provide funds to build Newport Beach’s first nature-based preschool. Casual attire and trail-friendly shoes are recommended. Doors open at 5:30 pm for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Dinner will be served at 7:00 pm. The cost is $150 per person and $1500 per table. RSVP by June 5 at encenter.org or contact Lori at (949) 645-8489, ext. 103. About the ENC Founded in 1972, the ENC is a fascinating combination of 15

California native plant communities, wildlife habitat, walking trails, and sustainably designed, LEED Platinum certified learning center. For over 40 years, the ENC has been shaped and caressed into a 5-acre landscape for learning, a sanctuary from life’s pressures and a place of preservation and instruction. Serving over 24,000 students and thousands of visitors annually, the ENC is recognized as a leader in science and social science education providing opportunities for increasing our community’s knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the natural world. The ENC recently purchased property to develop a nature play area, and construct our community’s first nature based preschool. With a mission of providing quality education through hands-on experience with nature, the ENC inspires all generations to protect the natural world by serving as our community’s foremost authority on ecological responsibility, sustainable practices and environmental education. The ENC is a non-profit 501(c)-3 public benefit corporation. For more information call 949-645-8489, or visit www.ENCenter.org. The ENC is located at 1601 16th St. in Newport Beach.

Heritage Pointe Luncheon, Fashion Show raises $1.5 million for those in need

A sold-out crowd of over 400 guests attended Heritage Pointe’s 28th Annual Spring Luncheon, Fashion Show, and Shopping Boutique at the Irvine Marriott Hotel. Co-chaired by Donna Markovitz and Gail Taleisnik, event featured a high-energy Fashion Show produced by SusanStein Style. Susan Stein is well-known in the fashion industry and is the Creative Producer and Director of the acclaimed El Paseo Fashion Week in Palm Desert, California, which just celebrated its 12th year. She currently serves as Fashion and Scene Editor for Palm Springs Life Magazine. “We both enjoyed Co-chairing Heritage Pointe’s terrific Spring Luncheon,” stated Gail Taleisnik and Donna Markovitz. “This has become an annual tradition, and we are delighted it was sold out again this year, resulting in tremendous community support,” they continued. The Shopping Boutique showcased over 30 vendors displaying clothing, handbags, jewelry, giftwares, home accessories, and much more. Some of the vendors participating at this year’s luncheon included Sassy Chic, Classy Bag Lady, Designer Details, Art Couture, Sheet Guys, Kiki Bean PJ’s, Gourmet Blends, The Treasured Accessory, Hana’s Fashions, Jacqueline B, Pegboard Highway, Ronelle Design Jewelry, Shakeels Concepts, Shelley’s Fashions, Susie O’s and Borrowed Bling. A percentage of Boutique sales were donated to the Heritage Fund (formerly named the Resident Assistance Fund) which helps seniors in financial need to live at Heritage Pointe surrounded by comfort, security, and love. Featuring an elegant black and gold color scheme, luncheon tables were adorned with crisp white orchid plants donated by My Mother Loved Flowers. Guests feasted on a scrumptious luncheon menu of Orange Fennel Roasted Cod with almonds, raisins, and mint relish accompanied with jasmine rice and seasonal vegetables, or a delicious Butternut Squash with roasted red peppers, spinach, asparagus and carrots with a Balsamic glaze. The piece de resistance was the dessert consisting of a combination of lemon tarts and chocolate Marquise. “The significance of this event is our community coming together to support our seniors at Heritage Pointe, which enables us to provide the highest quality of care facilities, amenities, and the best quality of life,” stated Mike Silverman, CEO of Heritage Pointe. The Runway Fashion Show featured collections from Grayse of Fashion Island and formal custom-made attire from Bohimi Couture of Palm Desert, whose wedding gown finale stole the show! Owners of Grayse, Marie and Kelly Gray, were on hand to present their Collection and give all attendees a $ 100 gift certificate to be used at their “pop up store” at the event or at any of their stores following the event. Grayse is a lifestyle brand designed by Kelly and Marie Gay. This is the Gray’s first time collaborating since their departure from St. John Knits over a decade ago. The mother-daughter duo started Grayse in 2013 as a fun project which grew into a full collection within a year. By 2014, the Grays opened their first retail boutique in Palm Desert, followed by two more retail locations. The mood that defines the Grayse Collecton is “sexy, glamorous, and sophisticated.” The Collection is composed of exquisite hand-crafted leather and tulle jackets, striking position prints, and extraordinary sequin pieces. “Heritage Pointe is appreciative of having the community join together in celebration of this fabulous annual event,” stated Beth Slavin, Director of Philanthropy at Heritage Pointe. “The uniqueness of combining a major Fashion Show with the iconic Marie and Kelly Gray, along with our extensive shopping boutique and elegant luncheon, has awarded Heritage Pointe a place on Orange County’s social calendar that draws men and women throughout the county,” Slavin continued. Voted “Best in Orange County for Senior Living Communities” by the OC Register, Heritage Pointe is a nonprofit 501 (c) 3, 225 resident community in Mission Viejo, California, providing independent, assisted, and memory care services for the elderly, while incorporating Jewish traditions and lifestyles. Offering specialized social, cultural, religious, and educational activities for its residents. Contributions from donors and fundraising activities assist Heritage Pointe in providing nearly $1.5 million annually in assistance to residents who are in financial need. Heritage Pointe’s vision is simple, to foster an exceptional environment based in Jewish values where all community members - including seniors, their families, and volunteers can learn, grow, live well, and flourish. PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated

(approved) The Newport News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people

of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising.

Wear a poppy this National Poppy Day Millions of people worldwide wear the red poppy

For many Americans, it starts with wearing the poppy on National Poppy Day, an annual tribute to the price of freedom. This year, National Poppy Day is May 25. For Ann Fournier, it starts with a train ride. She has taken the same train at 5 a.m. and 4:50 p.m. daily for 30 years. She spends her hour-long commutes piecing together tiny petals of red crepe paper to assemble poppies to support veterans. Fournier’s work has made her a symbol on the train. Known as the “Poppy Lady,” she has created 100,000 poppies each year over several decades. Her commitment began as a tribute to her brothers, who served during Vietnam, but has continued as a way to honor each veteran and civilian she has met on her ride to the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) state headquarters in Boston. “The conductor saves a seat with a table for me every day,” says Fournier, who serves as ALA Department of Massachusetts secretary/executive director. “He’s a veteran as well. Sometimes he sits with me to help. Sometimes strangers ask me what I’m doing. But the best moments happen when a veteran sits down or thanks me. I don’t do it for the thanks; I do it because I can, and these little red flowers are a way to help those in need. Our veterans don’t get enough of anything.” The red poppy holds great meaning for veterans all over the world. After the battles of World War I, the blood-red poppy flourished in France and Belgium when battlefields became burial grounds. The red flowers suddenly bloomed among the newly dug gravesites of fallen service members, turning the new graveyards into fields of red. Today, the poppy is a symbol of sacrifices made from WWI to today’s war on terror.

as a call to honor living veterans and those who lost their lives. The tradition can be traced back to 1918 when Moina Michael popularized the idea of wearing a poppy flower in memory of the military lives lost in WWI. She drew inspiration from the poem In Flanders Fields, written by WWI Col. John McCrae as he gazed at the rows and rows of graves where his comrades had been recently buried. In the decades that followed, poppies have been worn, displayed and distributed for fundraising efforts for veterans service organizations around the world. The American Legion Family is the driving force behind the now trademarked National Poppy Day because of its support for veterans and longstanding connection to the poppy flower. In the early 1920s, the Legion Family adopted the poppy as its official memorial flower to pay homage to the battlefields of WWI. Now, it is the Family’s mission to support the military community by promoting the significance of the flower and the meaning behind it. Members and volunteers connected to the ALA, one of the nation’s most prominent supporters of veterans’ rights, leverage the poppy in service to the veteran community through Poppy Day distributions and outreach. ALA volunteers hand out red paper or fabric poppies in exchange for donations that go directly to support veterans. Many of those poppies are made by hospitalized and disabled veterans as a form of rehabilitation and a source of income through this ALA program. In 2017, ALA members throughout the U.S. distributed nearly 6 million poppies or poppy items and raised $3.9 million in donations that went

Ann Fournier, the “Poppy Lady” directly to help veterans, military and their families. “This flower is personal to me,” says Fournier. “Because of it, I’ve been able to share stories about our veterans and the ALA’s work. I’ve also been able to explain that helping a veteran can be as simple as donating money in exchange for a poppy or as committed as making 100,000 poppies each year. It’s about what you can do to help.” Donning a poppy this National Poppy Day and every day is one simple way to show gratitude for a community that has given its lives to protect ours. Memorial Day Table Setting Ideas

Memorial Day is great time to celebrate and have fun! We often gather for and plan parties, lunches, events or dinners on this wonderful occasion. It is nice to present our food and drinks on a wonderfully decorated table. If you are hosting such an event, here are some great tips for decorating your table on Memorial Day! My first and favorite choice is the red, white and blue table setting. This is a pretty and colorful way to show your Memorial Day spirit! This table setting idea has many variations that you can choose from! You can use a red table cloth, blue table cloth or white table cloth for this table setting. My favorite is the red table cloth. It does not show spills and stands out. I like to use white plates. If it is an informal gathering or party, white paper plates can be used, though I recommend the plastic plates or sturdiest plates you can find. This will make your guests more comfortable and they will be less likely to spill their plate. Use white napkins. This can be paper napkins or cloth ones. Serve the beverages in blue cups. They can be blue plastic cups or blue glasses. The effect of the white plates, white napkins and blue cups look very nice on a red tablecloth. Add a beautiful basket or vase of red, white and blue carnations in the center of the table. I like to use silk flowers. If you like, you can use real red and white carnations. For an added touch, place small flags in the vase or basket, among the flowers! If you decide to use a blue table cloth, use red or white plates, white napkins and blue or red plastic cups or clear cups or clear glasses. If you use a white table cloth, red Page 16

The Newport News

plates, white napkins and blue cups or glasses look wonderful. For silverware, any type can go with this idea, even white plastic. This Memorial Day table setting is easy to set up and very affordable. It looks great! For a Spring like look that is festive and very pretty, use a flowered table cloth. For plates, the color choice is white, napkins can be white and the beverages can be served in clear plastic cups or clear glasses. Use silverware or white plastic ware. A large vase of all different types and colors of flowers look great in the center of this table setting. You can also just use white carnations in a basket. This table setting is colorful, attractive and very easy to do. It is very nice and makes a great Memorial Day table setting, if you do not wish to use the red, white and blue color theme. For an outdoor gathering, a red and white checkered table cloth looks very festive with white plates, white napkins, white plastic ware and red or blue cups or glasses. My preference is using red cups or glasses. I like keeping to the red and white theme on this idea. It looks fancy, yet simple. I add a basket or vase of red and white carnations to the center of the table and it gives the table setting a fun and fancy look. This Memorial Day table setting is sure to please! Depending on how much money you want to spend, you can find many Memorial Day themed table cloths to buy. Some are flag themed and some are red, white and blue checkers, stripes or a mix. If you use these, use white napkins, white

plates, white plastic ware or silverware, and blue cups or blue glasses. Place a basket or vase of white carnations in the center of the table. You can also place small flags in the flower arrangement. This table setting idea is creative and looks great! These Memorial Day table setting ideas are sure to make your holiday table look special. They are very easy to do and cost very little. Your table will look beautiful, festive and fun!
