failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. National forest ‘fee free’ days in 2018

Visitors to San Bernardino National Forest will be able to enjoy picnic areas, trailheads and recreational day-use sites without having to purchase an Adventure Pass on six days this year. These “fee free” days are offered across the country by the U.S. Forest Service: • June 9: National Get Outdoors Day • Sept. 22: National Public Lands Day • Nov. 11 - 12: Veterans Day Weekend “From Wrightwood to Idyllwild, the San Bernardino National Forest offers a variety of rich experiences for visitors,” said Forest Supervisor Jody Noiron. “You can play in snow, hike the tallest peaks in Southern California, explore hundreds of miles of dirt roads and immerse yourself in nature.” For non-fee free days, the Adventure Pass costs $5 for a day pass and $30 for an annual one. Funds raised go back in to recreation sites for maintenance of parking lots, bathrooms, trash cans, signage, trailheads and other recreation facilities. Visitors who inadvertently commit a daily Adventure Pass on “fee free”

days can have it replaced free-ofcharge. Forest visitors are reminded that even though the Adventure Pass fee will be waived, other fees such as

campground, reservation and group website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/ site fees will still be applicable. adventurepass. For more information on the National Forest Adventure Pass, visit our

By Ricky Burke Photo by Tim Miller A 2010 Colton High School graduate and Anaheim, California, native is serving as part of the PreCommissioning Unit for the future Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116). Fireman David Bernal is assigned to DDG 116 in Bath, Maine. As a fireman Bernal is responsible for maintenance of the ship’s electrical distribution systems. “I enjoy the camaraderie with the sailors in the division that I work in,” said Bernal. DDG 116 is currently undergoing tests and trials in preparation for delivery to the U.S. Navy from shipbuilder Bath Iron Works. Arleigh Burke class destroyers measure approximately 500 feet long and are powered by four gas turbines that allow the ship to achieve over 30 mph in open seas. Destroyers are tactical multi-mission surface combatants capable of conducting anti-air warfare, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and ballistic missile defense, as well as humanitarian assistance. Fast, maneuverable, and technically advanced, destroyers provide the required warfighting expertise and Page 4

operational flexibility to execute a variety of missions. “Thomas J. Hudner Jr., a naval aviator who retired as a captain, received the Medal of Honor from President Harry S. Truman for displaying uncommon valor during an attack on his element leader, the first African American naval aviator to fly in combat, Ensign Jesse L. Brown,” said Cmdr. Nathan W. Scherry, commanding officer, PCU Thomas Hudner. “On 07 May 2012, Secretary Mabus announced that DDG 116 will be named in Captain Hudner’s honor. Today, as the Navy’s finest 300 Sailors crew the 66th Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer, they do so with a tremendous amount of honor, pride, and sense of duty. We are extremely honored to be able to carry Captain Hudner’s values and legacy forward so that they are never forgotten. We are proud to be able to carry out our missions in defense of our country’s freedom and values, and humbled to be part of the Hudner family.” Bernal has carried lessons learned from his hometown into his military service. “Growing up, I learned the values of hard work and taking with you as much as you can from your job so

The Newport News

you can move on to the next chapter in your life,” said Bernal. With a crew of over 300 sailors, each crew member’s job is important to the smooth operation of the ship. The jobs range from weapon handling to navigation. Bernal has military ties with family members who have previously served and is honored to carry on the family tradition. “My older brother served in the Marines for five years and did a tour in Afghanistan,” said Bernal. “I’m proud to carry on his name doing my part serving in the military.” Bernal’s proudest accomplishment was graduating boot camp. “We had several dropouts in my division throughout the eight-week course. Completing boot camp gave me the confidence needed to know I can complete anything in life I set my mind to,” added Bernal. Close living conditions build strong fellowship among the crew, Navy officials explained. The crew is highly motivated, and quickly adapt to changing conditions. It is a busy life of specialized work, watches, and drills. As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s newest ships, Bernal and other sailors know they are part of

Fireman David Bernal a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes providing the Navy the nation needs. “Serving in the Navy means being a part of something bigger than myself,” said Bernal. “I have a great sense of pride and honor serving my country, and it makes my family proud.” The construction of the ship is over 98% complete. The ship is scheduled for commissioning in late 2018 in Boston, Mass. For more information about the commissioning, visit http:// www.usshudnerddg116.org.

Environmental Nature Center to host Summer Soiree

Where in Newport Beach can you enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres with a fine cocktail next to the sound of a rippling stream? That would be at the Environmental Nature Center, of course! On Saturday, June 9 at 5:30 p.m. the ENC will be hosting its annual Summer Soiree. Guests will be supporting environmental education in their community while enjoying a meal catered by the award-winning Anaheim White House restaurant. Established in 1972, the ENC works to connect people with nature and to provide opportunities which

create connections with the world outdoors for people of all ages. “Summer Soiree guests return year after year to support a cause they care for deeply,” said Lori Whalen, ENC Assistant Director. “Without our generous supporters, we would not be able to provide quality education through hands-on experience with nature.” During the evening, acoustic music by Tracy and the Blues Makers will play under a canopy of alder and cypress trees. Guests can even roast marshmallows and make s’mores next to a campfire under the stars.

Special items will be up for auction. Last year, one of the items auctioned was the chance to release a rehabilitated barn owl. This year, the ENC has begun construction on its new Nature Preschool. Whalen said, “We believe that developing a love and connection to the natural world is intrinsically connected to protecting and conserving it. [There is] an element of excitement and anticipation to see the fruition of something we’ve all been waiting for so long. Our supporters are excited to see [the school] open, even if they don’t have young children of their own.” Proceeds from the soiree support the ENC’s environmental education programs and will help to provide funds to build Newport Beach’s first nature-based preschool. Casual attire and trail-friendly shoes are recommended. Doors open at 5:30 pm for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Dinner will be served at 7:00 pm. The cost is $150 per person and $1500 per table. RSVP by June 5 at encenter.org or contact Lori at (949) 645-8489, ext. 103. About the ENC Founded in 1972, the ENC is a fascinating combination of 15

California native plant communities, wildlife habitat, walking trails, and sustainably designed, LEED Platinum certified learning center. For over 40 years, the ENC has been shaped and caressed into a 5-acre landscape for learning, a sanctuary from life’s pressures and a place of preservation and instruction. Serving over 24,000 students and thousands of visitors annually, the ENC is recognized as a leader in science and social science education providing opportunities for increasing our community’s knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the natural world. The ENC recently purchased property to develop a nature play area, and construct our community’s first nature based preschool. With a mission of providing quality education through hands-on experience with nature, the ENC inspires all generations to protect the natural world by serving as our community’s foremost authority on ecological responsibility, sustainable practices and environmental education. The ENC is a non-profit 501(c)-3 public benefit corporation. For more information call 949-645-8489, or visit www.ENCenter.org. The ENC is located at 1601 16th St. in Newport Beach.

Christie Brinkley’s Hamptons Tower Home for sale!

America’s most popular supermodel, Christie Brinkley, has put her longtime Hamptons estate on the market asking $29.5 million. The 20acre estate in Bridgehampton, called Tower Hill, is now far too large for empty nester Brinkley and though it was perfect for raising her daughters, it is no longer practical for a single woman with three children who are now young adults. Like many celebrities who require safe places to park their wealth, Brinkley has invested in real estate, concentrating in the Hamptons at the tip of Long Island. She has been a resident there for years and though originally a California “surfer girl” as a youth, the 64-year-old “Uptown Girl” now calls the Hamptons home. Named for the century-old observation tower that was built as part of the main house in 1891, Tower Hill is sited on more than 20 private open and wooded acres, the threestory traditional main house has six bedrooms and five and a half baths, while the guest house and artist’s studio add another two bedrooms and

two baths totalling over 11,000 square feet of living space. Charmingly eclectic, the home is pure Christie - subtly sophisticated and at the same time whimsical. Included are a large country kitchen and family room, gym, office, four fireplaces, multiple stone terraces and a fourcar heated garage. Grounds with rolling lawns, flower and organic vegetable gardens and walking trails also include a tennis court, pond and heated swimming pool. The property was totally restored in 1998 by Christie and her then husband - architect Peter Cook. Since the acreage is 200 feet above sea level, from the observation tower, one can see the Atlantic Ocean, the south shore of Connecticut, Gardiner’s Island, and the North Fork Peninsula. Raised in Southern California, Christie Brinkley has lived what many would call a fairytale life beginning with her move to France after high school to study art. In 1973, celebrity photographer Errol Sawyer saw her in a Paris post office and connected her to the world of fashion modeling.

She came to fame as a three-time Sports Illustrated cover girl and now with over 30 years as one of America’s favorite models, a record stint as the Cover Girl pitch woman and lucrative endorsement deals for beauty products, wine and fitness equipment, Christie can afford to live wherever she wants. She continues to model and is now producing her

own wine, Bellissimo Prosecco, and a new line of Christie Brinkley skincare products and hairpieces. Christie Brinkley is selling Tower Hill, her Bridgehampton family home of 15 years. The estate is listed by Enzo Morabito of Douglas Elliman. Priced at $29.5 million. TopTenRealEstateDeals.com Source: elliman.com

Moms Orange County Honors Women’s Health Leader And “Mother Of The Year”

MOMS Orange County held its annual “Healthy Beginnings, Bright Futures” fundraising luncheon at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel in Anaheim, bringing together nearly 200 supporters and community members and raising more than $60,000. The luncheon also recognized honorees for MOMS Orange County’s “Mother of the Year” Award, and the Dottie Andrews Leadership in Maternal Health Award. Starting the program, Richard Cohen, PhD, a child development expert and former director of Project ABC at the Children’s Institute, Inc., as well as Heather Huszti, PhD, chief psychologist at CHOC Children’s Hospital—both spoke on the topic of infant and adolescent mental health. Daniel Patterson, Founder and President of Patterson Perspective in Newport Beach, and parenting coach, teen life coach, consultant and writer, was Master of Ceremonies. Community partners for the event included St. Joseph Hospital, Hoag Hospital, Athena Group Consulting, LLC., CHOC Children’s, Union Bank, Kaiser Permanente, Disneyland Resort and PIMCO Foundation. The transformative work of MOMS Orange County was apparent when the “Mother of the Year” Award recipient, Melanie Soto, took the stage. Soto accepted the award and shared her story of working through challenges to become the kind of parent she always wanted to be. Soto and her husband gained confidence and support in their parenting journey through MOMS Orange County’s programs including Mommy and Me Classes, home visitation, Taller Para Papas and more. The Dottie Andrews Leadership in Maternal Child Health Award was presented to Julianne Toohey, M.D., in recognition of her lifetime of service and impact on the health and well-being of mothers, children, and families in Orange County. Dr. Toohey is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the UC Irvine School of Medicine, where she is Health Sciences Clinical Professor and Clerkship Director of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine in the Dept. of Ob/Gyn. She also serves as Co-Director of UCI’s Initiative to End Family Violence. Dr. Toohey established her practice in 1994, serving predominantly low-income pregnant women in Orange County—her patients often uninsured and vulnerable to chronic health conditions like diabetes and heart disease. An educator and practitioner, Dr. Toohey serves as Perinatal Director and Vice Chair of the Women’s and Children’s Department at St. Jude Medical Center, the Perinatal Director of St. Joseph Hospital, and is the attending perinatologist at nearly every birthing hospital in Orange County. She served as board member for MOMS Orange County for 13 years, with a passion for reaching out to at-risk women to improve their birth and maternal health outcomes. “We are deeply grateful for the community’s support in making this event another great success,” said MOMS Orange County CEO Pamela Pimentel, RN. “To have these health leaders and supporters of mothers in one room is a powerful experience every year. The programs, resources and people at MOMS Orange County are truly giving families the tools they need to navigate parenthood and have a bright future. Folks were also privy to a silent auction which for grabs were a Disneyland Resort Superhero Package (4 park-hopper passes), 1 night stay at a Disneyland Resort hotel and a Marvel superhero gift basket; tickets to Taylor Swift at the Rose Bowl; Anaheim Ducks Package – 2 Plaza Level tickets and a Corey Perry autographed jersey; and a 2 Night stay at the Anaheim Marriott. Event funds will enable MOMS Orange County to continue to expand its critical work in supporting women and their families at one of the most crucial times in their lives — when they first take on the enormous responsibilities and challenges of motherhood. For over 25 years, MOMS Orange County has been helping at-risk mothers and their families have healthy babies by providing access to prenatal care, health screenings, infant development screenings, health education and referral services through monthly home visits and group classes. Mothers receive one-on-one education and support during pregnancy to help increase their chance of delivering a healthy baby. After babies are born, the focus turns to promoting their healthy growth and development, so they grow up happy, healthy and ready to learn. PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated

(approved) The Newport News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people

of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising.

But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona Del Mar and Newport Coast?
