ENVIRONMENTAL NATURE CENTER PRESENTS READING IN THE REDWOODS
The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) will present Reading in the Redwoods on June 24, from 9:3011AM. Participants will take a “Tree Hug Hike” out to the Redwood Forest with ENC Executive Director Bo Glover and Naturalist Valerie Bain. Bain will read “On A Magical Do Nothing Day” and Glover will perform a few Nature Magic Tricks. All ages are welcome. The fee is $5 per child for pre-registered ENC members, $7 for pre-registered non-members, and $10 for walk-ins. The ENC is located at 1601 E. 16th Street in Newport Beach. Pre-registration is required at encenter.org Research by the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that reading daily to young children, starting in infancy, stimulates early brain development and helps build key language, literacy and social skills. Early learning experiences such as reading provide a love of learning and strongly affect success in school, work and in life. “Reading together and talking with your child about literature is a chance to bond as a family, and it encourages a child’s love of reading” said ENC Executive Director Bo Glover. “Imagination, growth, and improved reading, writing, and verbal skills soar when a child picks up a book.”
Event participants will also participate in hands-on activities along the trail, create nature art and meet our bugs. The ENC staff offers Reading in the Redwoods monthly, with each event featuring a different book and themed activities to accompany it. “Kids are spending more time with screen media and at younger ages than ever before,” said ENC Naturalist Valerie Bain. “Research suggests that screen time can have lots of negative effects on kids, ranging from obesity and irregular sleep patterns to social and behavioral issues. Put down the electronic devices and pick up a book. Let’s read people!” About the ENC Founded in 1972, the ENC is a fascinating combination of 15 California native plant communities, wildlife habitat, walking trails, and sustainably designed, LEED Platinum certified learning center. For over 45 years, the ENC has been shaped and caressed into a 5-acre landscape for learning, a sanctuary from life’s pressures and a place of preservation and instruction. Serving over 27,000 students and thousands of visitors annually, the ENC is recognized as a leader in science and social science education providing opportunities for increasing our community’s knowledge, understanding and
appreciation of the natural world. With a mission of providing quality education through hands-on experience with nature, the ENC inspires all generations to protect the natural world by serving as our community’s foremost authority o n e c o l o g i c a l r e s p o n s i b i l i t y,
sustainable practices and environmental education. The ENC is a non-profit 501(c)-3 public benefit corporation. For more information call 949-645-8489, or visit www. ENCenter.org. The ENC is located at 1601 16th St. in Newport Beach.

The 38th Baroque Music Festival takes a French twist, June 17–24 This year’s annual Baroque Music Festival, Corona del Mar, features a charming French repertoire in a program cast as “French Fare with a Dash of Handel” that is sure to delight. Set in a delicious menu of five individual concerts within an 8-day period – June 17–24, 2018 – an extraordinary mix of Baroque musicians will perform at three select venues in Corona del Mar and Newport Beach. In her eighth year as the Festival’s artistic director and concertmaster, Elizabeth Blumenstock has created yet another inspired program. An internationally renowned Baroque violinist, Blumenstock has performed throughout the world, playing a 17th‐ century Guarneri violin. In addition to her musical leadership of the Baroque Music Festival, she serves as concertmaster of both Philharmonia Baroque and the American Bach Soloists, and teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Juilliard School of Music. The program for the 38th annual Baroque Music Festival includes Sunday performances that feature the Festival Orchestra. The three concerts positioned between these “bookends” showcase solo recitals and small chamber ensembles. The Festival Finale – that “dash of Handel” – also includes a pair of stunning sopranos. In addition, audiences are invited to enjoy Baroque music performed al fresco by the South Coast Brass beginning 45 minutes before each concert. Following all performances, audience members and musicians enjoy mingling for conversation and refreshment at a wine and waters reception. Sunday, June 17 · St. Mark Presbyterian Church, 4 p.m. Parisian Divertissements Elizabeth Blumenstock leads the Festival Orchestra in a mélange of French concertos by Rebel and Leclair, plus Corelli’s Christmas Concerto and Rameau’s ballet suites. Monday, June 18 · St. Michael &
All Angels Episcopal Church, 8 p.m. Bach and the French Style A recital by extraordinary organist Jonathan Dimmock, cofounder of the American Bach Soloists, and the first American to hold the prestigious position of Organ Scholar of Westminster Abbey. Wednesday, June 20 · Sherman Library & Gardens, 8 p.m. Stylus Phantasticus Harmonically adventurous and texturally rich chamber music from Becker, Biber, Scheidt, Schein and Schmelzer. Friday, June 22 · Sherman Library & Gardens, 8 p.m. Les Petits Concerts Elizabeth Blumenstock (violin), David Shostac (flute), Andrew McIntosh (violin, viola), Michael Kaufman (cello) and Lara Wickes (oboe) perform chamber works by Boismortier, Guilleman and Telemann. Sunday, June 24 · St. Mark Presbyterian Church, 4 p.m. Festival Finale: Handel’s ‘Orlando’ A spirited concert version of this charming opera with the Festival Orchestra, sopranos Amanda Keenan and Josefien Stoppelenburg, alto Robin Bier, countertenor Clifton Massey and bass Graham Bier, accompanied by an entertaining narrative.
Information and Tickets The Baroque Music Festival offers a subscription for all five concerts at $280 that includes priority seating at each event and a private post-concert dinner following the Festival Finale on Sunday, June 24th. Additional information about the 2018 Baroque Music Festival, as well as ticket sales for this year’s series or single concerts (ranging from $30 to $50), may be found at the Festival website www.bmf-cdm. org or by calling (949) 760-7887. Since 1981, the Baroque Music Festival, Corona del Mar, has evolved as both an esteemed and popular cultural institution in Orange County, California. Acclaimed instrumentalists and vocal soloists assemble for the annual Festival in June, performing primarily on period instruments in intimate settings. Concert goers have described the performances as “rapturous” and “riveting”; music reviewers from the Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register and other local publications consistently offer glowing reviews. The Festival’s all volunteer Board of Directors is committed to bringing high quality Baroque music to Corona del Mar every summer.

5 steps to the perfect fishing trip with dad When you were a kid and needed to learn something new, you went to Dad, right? He’s the one who taught you how to ride a bike and drive a car. He’s also the one who taught you how to bait your hook for the first time. You’ve never forgotten these skills and now is a great time to say thank you to the man who helped you learn and grow by taking him out for a day of fishing. You might even teach him a thing or two. Whether it’s for Father’s Day or his birthday, this is a great time of year to surprise him with can’t-miss gifts he’ll enjoy while sharing his favorite pastime with you. So don’t delay. The weather’s great and the boat is ready. Make the most of it with this list of tips guaranteed to show Dad a fishing trip he won’t forget. * Surprise him with the perfect invitation. If your dad can’t say no to helping with a project, surprising him with a fishing trip will be easy. Ask for his help on something you can’t do yourself. You can even poke at him about how hard the project will be, just don’t go too far or he won’t show up. And then, when he arrives,
show him the car packed and ready to hit his favorite honey hole. He’ll be so happy he may just forgive you for the trick. * Plan to the last detail. On a good fishing trip, the drive is half the fun, so don’t race through it. Take Dad to his favorite restaurant for breakfast, play his favorite tunes in the car and have a steaming cup of his favorite coffee waiting for him when you hit the open road. * Surprise him with the right gear. Help dear old Dad up his angling acumen by giving a few thoughtful gifts throughout the day. Start the surprise by setting up his favorite rod and reel, before picking him up, with Sufix 832 Advanced Superline. A go-to fishing line for the world’s best anglers, this braided line has the strength and durability to ward against line breaks and will ensure Dad’s next big catch makes it all the way to the boat. And at the end of this line you can tie on the dynamic Rapala Ripstop. An innovative new lure, the bait features a unique hard-plastic-boot tail that creates a hard-rolling, slashing action to mimic
live-minnow movement, perfect for drawing plenty of attention. Then after a morning of catching fish on the water, hand Dad the Rapala Lithium Ion Cordless Fillet to make quick work of even the most intimidating filleting chore. Its lithium-ion battery provides continuous, full-power operation for 80 minutes, and will have the two of you enjoying a delicious shore lunch in no time. * Cap the day off right. When the sun starts to set and the day of fishing is finally done, cap the day off with a drink at his favorite spot or sit around
the fire telling stories. Just don’t be surprised if the size of Dad’s catch has grown considerably by then - it is a fish story after all. * Sit back and enjoy the ride. All of your planning has come to make this day as special for you as it is for your father, so don’t miss a moment of it. Put the phone away and unplug while engaging in conversation. You may just learn a thing or two about your dad that you never knew before and the memories you’ll get from your trip together will last a lifetime. - (BPT)

Think Together Raises $375,000 A nd C elebrates 2 1 Years
Matt and Jackie Brunwin
The Newport News
More than 300 community and business leaders came together to celebrate Think Together’s annual “Raise a Hand” event at [AV] Irvine. They raised $375,000 to benefit the organization’s programs that change the odds for children and youth from low-income families. The celebration featured a “Face of the Future” college scholarship award given to two students who have worked hard to beat the odds, and a “Champion of Change” award, honoring an individual who is changing the odds for kids. Guests also had the opportunity to interact with students in “a day in the life” program showcases. Folks settled in for a wonderful dinner prior to the program starting – consisting of Watermelon and Feta Salad with Balsamic Glaze for starters. Next came a plate of Filet Mignon and Chilean Sea Bass Duo, a choice filet mignon with cremini mushroom and bourbon demi-glaze pan-seared Chilean sea bass with Meyer lemon and roasted shallot butter truffle with smashed Yukon gold potatoes accompanied with fresh spring asparagus. For dessert, a Chocolate Reflection Cake had everyone excited as this dark chocolate cake had a rich chocolate mousse filling with dark chocolate glaze and raspberry coulis – decadent! There was a quick live auction where attendees were privy to some great items. First up for grabs - a three night/three-bedroom villa golf & spa escape at the Resort at Pelican Hill; then there was a Tequila tasting and prix fix dinner for 10 in the private cellar at Gabbi’s Mexican kitchen; someone Caleb Remington and Tiffany Au walked away with a private tour and tasting for 6 at Joseph Phelps vineyards; and lastly, a bidder’s choice - ticket exchange: one lucky winning bidder has choice of two tickets to a major sporting event in 2018. Opportunities typically include: Golf US Masters Tournament, NCAA Final Four Basketball Tournament, NFL Super Bowl, or US Open Tennis. Package included a $2,000 American Express gift card which can be used toward travel and lodging. When the program began, awards were given out with the “Face of the Future” college scholarship award presented to Ana Lua Martel and Daniella Manzanares. Martel, a Think Together student, Class of 2018 is a La Puente resident and a senior at Bassett High School. She has participated in Think Together’s programs for 8 years and was accepted to six California universities. She plans to obtain her bachelor’s degree in Political Science and continue to law school after college. Martel’s goal is to become an immigration lawyer to better serve the Latino community and help families stay together. Manzanares, also a Think Together student, Class of 2018 is a Costa Mesa resident and a senior at Pacifica Christian High School in Newport Beach. She has participated in Think Together’s programs since kindergarten at the Shalimar Learning Center. In the fall, she will be attending one of the nine universities she applied to, where she plans to major in Business and Leo Vanwarnerdam with Sterling minor in Spanish. Manzanares plans to pay it forward during college and Joyce Lee with Eunice Sun Cates after by inspiring others, just as she was inspired by the Think Together staff at Shalimar. The “Champion of Change” award was presented to Gudiel Crosthwaite, EdD, Superintendent, Lynwood School District, and Paul Gothold, EdD, Retired Superintendent, Lynwood School District. They both helped champion the revitalization of Lynwood Unified School District (LUSD) and the lives of families in the community through Principal’s Exchange, in partnership with Think Together. “We are beyond grateful to our dedicated donors and supporters who believe in our goal of educational equity and excellence for all kids,” said Randy Barth, CEO and Founder of Think Together. “Through their support, Think Together has been able to transform schools and children throughout the state and we look forward to partnering with even more schools to take kids from just beating the odds, to fundamentally changing the odds for years to come.” Think Together was formally founded as a nonprofit in 1997 to expand its support model to schools serving low income students. Today, the organization is a trusted partner of 43 California school districts and impacts over 150,000 kids in 422 program sites every year. Its programs and services continue to evolve to support learning in and out of school, so kids can succeed in their journey from pre-school to college or career readiness. Governor Brown, Legislative Leaders Reach Budget Agreement Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr., Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon today announced that they have reached an agreement on the 2018-19 state budget. The budget agreement makes record investments in schools and universities, creates the state’s first online community college, fully fills the Rainy Day Fund, boosts child care and combats homelessness and poverty. “After detailed discussions, California is on the verge of having another on-time, balanced budget,” said Governor Brown. “From a $27 billion deficit in 2011, the state now enjoys a healthy surplus and a solid Rainy Day Fund.” “From day one, we knew we needed to prepare for the inevitable economic downturn. That is why this budget balances fiscal responsibility with social responsibility by significantly expanding the Rainy Day Fund and also making record levels of investment in education funding – both K-12 and higher education – child care access, and
funding to fight homelessness and to protect children from living in deep poverty. I commend Governor Brown for his steady leadership throughout his years as Governor of this great state, and to Speaker Rendon for his partnership in the Legislature. We have crafted the strongest budget possible for the people of California,” said Senate President pro Tempore Atkins. “This budget agreement brings together shared priorities of the Assembly, the Senate, and the Governor — easing the homelessness crisis, providing a pathway toward healthcare for all, lifting families out of poverty, keeping college affordable for California students, and building responsible reserves as protection against tough times. No single budget can capture all the opportunities California has, or meet all the challenges we face — but the smart and sensible choices in this budget absolutely move California closer to where we want and need to be,” said Assembly Speaker Rendon.

PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated
(approved) The Newport News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people
of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising.

The history of father ’s day and any traditional present to fathers.
Father’s Day was founded in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd. Its first celebration was in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who reared his six children in Spokane, Washington. After hearing a sermon about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a
similar holiday honoring them. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father’s birthday, the pastors hadn’t enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. It didn’t have much success initially. In the 1920s, Dodd stopped promoting the celebration because she was studying in the Art Institute
of Chicago, and it faded into relative obscurity, even in Spokane. In the 1930s Dodd returned to Spokane and started promoting the celebration again, raising awareness at a national level. She had the help of those trade groups that would benefit most from the holiday, for example the manufacturers of ties, tobacco pipes,
Since 1938 she had the help of the Father’s Day Council, founded by the New York Associated Men’s Wear Retailers to consolidate and systematize the commercial promotion A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father’s Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized. US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation. Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress. In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus “[singling] out just one of our two parents”. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.
