The history of father ’s day and any traditional present to fathers.
Father’s Day was founded in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd. Its first celebration was in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who reared his six children in Spokane, Washington. After hearing a sermon about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a
similar holiday honoring them. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father’s birthday, the pastors hadn’t enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. It didn’t have much success initially. In the 1920s, Dodd stopped promoting the celebration because she was studying in the Art Institute
of Chicago, and it faded into relative obscurity, even in Spokane. In the 1930s Dodd returned to Spokane and started promoting the celebration again, raising awareness at a national level. She had the help of those trade groups that would benefit most from the holiday, for example the manufacturers of ties, tobacco pipes,
Since 1938 she had the help of the Father’s Day Council, founded by the New York Associated Men’s Wear Retailers to consolidate and systematize the commercial promotion A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father’s Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized. US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation. Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress. In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus “[singling] out just one of our two parents”. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

Being a father Is quite a bother . . . You improve them mentally And straighten them dentally They’re no longer corralable Once they find that you’re fallible But after you’ve raised them and educated them and gowned them, They just take their little fingers and wrap you around them. Being a father Is quite a bother, But I like it, rather. ~Ogden Nash

Celebrate Dad with Grilling and Golf This year for Father’s Day, skip the tacky tie and 6 tablespoons diced red onion give dad something he truly wants – quality time 3 garlic cloves, minced with the kids who gave him such an honorable 3 tablespoons lemon juice title. Plan an intimate family gathering with all his 1 tablespoon olive oil favorite foods and a few special touches that reflect 1/4 teaspoon ground thyme his other passions in life, such as golf. Pepper to taste Let dad savor some grilled goodness (and a 1 pound boned, lean pork chop, cut into healthy dose of antioxidants) with colorful fruit and 1-inch cubes (approximately 38-40 pieces) veggie kabobs. Healthy, hydrating watermelon is 32 cubes watermelon (1 inch each), plus extra the star ingredient of these colorful skewers, which for garnish if desired also include marinated chunks of pork. 16-24 zucchini rounds (1/2 inch) Add a low-calorie, fat-free side by serving 16 pineapple chunks, fresh or watermelon balls in a fun golf ball-shaped vessel canned (1 inch each) carved from a watermelon rind. 24 yellow or orange peppers For more recipes and carving ideas using chunks (1 inch each, approximately versatile watermelon, visit www.watermelon.org. 3-4 peppers total) Pork and Watermelon Kabobs Cooking spray Servings: 8 Sesame seeds for garnish 6 tablespoons brown sugar Combine sugar, soy sauce, onion, garlic, lemon 6 tablespoons soy sauce juice, olive oil, thyme and pepper in mixing bowl. Pour into resealable bag and add pork pieces. Seal bag, mix thoroughly and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, turning bag periodically. Remove pork from bag and reserve marinade. Thread 5 pork pieces, 4 watermelon cubes, 2-3 zucchini rounds, 2 pineapple chunks and 3 peppers on each of 8 skewers, alternating the order. Spray cooking surface on heated grill and place kebobs on grill. Grill for 12-15 minutes, or until done, turning and basting frequently with reserved marinade. Garnish with sesame seeds and chunks of watermelon. Golf Ball Serving Bowl Wash watermelon under cool running water and pat dry. On cutting board, place watermelon on side and cut off 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch from stem end, being careful not to cut too deep into white part of rind.
This will provide sturdy base. Using paring knife, cut a 3- to 4-inch round circle in top of watermelon. Use melon baller to make shallow round divots into rind of watermelon to mimic dimples in golf ball. Next, use kitchen knife to peel thin layers of rind off to expose white underneath, being careful not to cut too deep or red flesh will be exposed. Try to get as much of green rind off so it will resemble a white golf ball. Hollow out watermelon with spoon or scoop. Place on tray and add watermelon balls to serve.

$1.5 Million Raised at Roaring ‘20’s Themed Gala for Pacific Symphony PHOTO CREDIT: Ann Chatillon Glitz, glamour and decadence—it was the cat’s pajamas and the bee’s knees all rolled into one! More than 430 guests roared their way back to The Jazz Age for a night of flappers and speakeasies to celebrate Pacific Symphony’s 2017 Gala! Tassels flew and knees knocked as the Charleston became the rage again and Gala attendees learned first hand why the 1920s were called “roaring”! The exuberant, freewheeling popular culture of the decade came alive with a thematic evening that included a stylish reception, a ritzy gourmet dinner and sensational entertainment by a daring aerialist, Symphony musicians and the Jazz Age sounds of JT & Friends. Tunes such as “Sunny Side of the Street,” “Blue Skies” and “Bill Baily” set the tone, as the evening proved to be a rip-roaring success—netting more than $1.5 million for the Symphony’s artistic and education programs! Chaired by last year’s gala co-chair, Symphony Board Member Ginny Davies, this swanky event took place at the Hotel Irvine. Along with the gala committee, Davies created a lavish evening that sparkled with festive, good-natured fun—recalling a time at the end of World War I when a new sense of prosperity and freedom emerged and life picked up momentum. “We are thrilled that the evening was a success, bringing in much needed funds to support Pacific Symphony’s activities in the community. The roaring ’20s were the inspiration for the ambience and all the energy. Guests enjoyed having time to relax and just be,” says Davies. The evening’s guests arrived at 5 p.m.—gussied up and looking like they’d stepped out of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel—passing by a row of stunning vintage cars before finding themselves in the midst of a hotsy totsy speakeasy (an illicit establishment that sold “hooch” during the 1920s when Prohibition was in full swing). They were a mere Lindy hop away from a night they would never forget! Inside, the speakeasy dazzled with bouquets of red roses and gold leaf, and six stunning models in gold floor-length art-deco gowns added to the ambience. Guests enjoyed a little “giggle water”—either from the gold, towering eight-level champagne fountain that bubbled and fizzed (adorned at the top with a beautiful live flapper), perfect for picture taking; or from the 1920s-era selection of cocktails, such as the Side Car and Mary Pickford. Don’t forget the “swizzle stick”! Guests also kicked back in the lounge area, where they were entertained by a spiffy band, with a singer and dancers, while others tried their luck in the casino, where gaming table were hopping with roulette, blackjack and craps. A giant paper moon provided another key photo op! As the reception drew to a close, guests were ushered into the grand ballroom, decked out in opulent art-deco décor glistening in shades of white and gold. Guests half expected Jay Gatsby to greet them! Dinner, created by the hotel’s Executive Chef, Michael Beck, featured cuisine reminiscent of the 1920s—with velvety cauliflower soup, cabernet poached-pear salad, sumptuous filet mignon (and lobster tail for VIPs!), plus basil-whipped potatoes with asparagus, tomatoes and peppercorn brandy sauce, among the mouth-watering delights. Following a greeting from Symphony President John Forsyte and Music Director Carl St.Clair, four Symphony musicians—Joseph Morris (clarinet), Paul Manaster (violin), Meredith Crawford (viola) and Timothy Landauer (cello)—performed Haydn’s Clarinet Quartet and a Gambaro Clarinet Quartet. Then, Symphony cellist Laszlo Mezo and four Pacific Symphony Youth Ensembles members (all cellists) delighted the rapt audiences with Mancini’s “Pink Panther” and a little Schubert! As if that wasn’t enough, anyone wearing socks had them knocked off when the band played “St. Louis Blues,” as a sultry, jaw-dropping aerial act took place high overhead, before guests were treated to more jazzy tunes by JT & Friends, courtesy of Symphony supporter and good friend, John Tu of Kingston Technology. Cannon bursts of confetti kept the festivities lively, even as the spectacular evening wrapped up. Before departing, guests made sure to visit the 20s-era candy bar and were sent home with Hershey Bars that read: “Save the Date for Gala March 3, 2018”!! Page 10

1 5 0 V o l u n t e e r s C o mp l e t e F i r s t - Ev e r Oy s t e r R e s t o r a t i o n i n Upp e r N e wp o r t B a y For the first time, more than 150 volunteers hauled 20 tons of Pacific oyster shell in hand-sewn coconut fiber bags to restore Upper Newport Bay as part of the groundbreaking Living Shorelines project. Orange County Coastkeeper’s effort is unique to the west coast, combining oyster shell and eelgrass restoration to protect the shoreline from erosion and rising sea levels. Coastkeeper anticipates that this will improve water quality and result in a flourishing habitat for fish, invertebrates and other marine life. Unlike most restoration projects that rely on plastic mesh bags, this endeavor with oyster shells used entirely biodegradable materials. In April, students and volunteers hand-sewed more than 500 bags using coconut coir, the fiber found on coconut husks, and filled the bags with 40,000 pounds of Pacific oyster shells. Then, for a full week, they woke up before dawn to transport the shell into four different sites in Upper Newport Bay during low tide. “It’s not every day you see students from four universities and volunteers wake up at 2 a.m. to protect and
enhance our shoreline,” said Orange County Coastkeeper Marine Restoration Director Katie Nichols. “Their hard work and dedication to the project was inspiring and we hope to see it pay off in the form of improved water quality and an enhanced native Olympia oyster population.” Over the last five years, Coastkeeper and hundreds of volunteers planted more than 2,500 square meters of eelgrass as part of the Living Shorelines project and have already noted improved water quality and an increase in marine life. Now with oyster shell added to the site, Coastkeeper will use the restored area as a case study to evaluate the potential benefits of restoring eelgrass and oysters simultaneously. As it continues to monitor the area, Coastkeeper anticipates seeing more signs of habitat improvement, including increased endangered Olympia oysters and other native species. Many east coast groups have seen positive results from laying oyster shells to naturally buffer shorelines from sea level rise, but few projects examine the combined benefits
of oyster and eelgrass restoration simultaneously. Since the 1990s, more than 85 percent of the world’s oyster reefs have disappeared according to The Nature Conservancy. Coastkeeper says in order to keep pace with future sea level rise and other climaterelated stresses, conservation and restoration of these key habitatforming species must happen now. For more information about Living Shorelines, visit Coastkeeper’s website or view photos here. For additional photos or to check out the site in person, please contact Lauren Zerweck (lauren@gomixte.com). ORANGE COUNTY COASTKEEPER: Founded in 1999,
the mission of Coastkeeper is to protect and promote sustainable water resources that are swimmable, drinkable, and fishable. The 37th Baroque Music Festival takes a novel approach, June 18-25
With “A Festival of Novelties,” the 37th annual Baroque Music Festival, Corona del Mar, promises a fresh approach, unique elements and unusual repertoire in a program sure to delight its fortunate audiences. Over an eight day period, June 18–25, 2017, an extraordinary group of Baroque musicians will perform at venues in Corona del Mar and Newport Beach in five individual concerts. This year’s inspired program is the creation of world renowned Baroque violinist Elizabeth Blumenstock, the Festival’s artistic director. Blumenstock has performed throughout the U.S. and abroad playing a 17th-century Guarneri violin. She serves as concertmaster with California’s finest period ensembles and teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music as well as the

The Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 by J.S. Bach provides a familiar accent to this concert. and Jenkins. Wednesday, June 21 ∙ Sherman Library & Gardens, 8 p.m. Music from Monticello Thomas Jefferson’s vast music library provides an authentic source for a program of chamber and vocal music, featuring soprano Jennifer Ellis Kampani, as well as relevant readings from the period. Friday, June 23 ∙ Sherman Library & Gardens, 8 p.m. Beyond Baroque Elizabeth Blumenstock (violin), David Shostac (flute), Timothy Landauer (cello), Andrew McIntosh (violin, viola) and Lara Wickes (oboe) perform a program of Classical chamber works by J.C. Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Cambini and Albrechtsberger. Sunday, June 25 ∙ St. Mark Presbyterian Church, 4 p.m. Festival Finale: A Quire of Choirs In this program, subtitled “Polyphonic Music from the Edge of the Baroque,” instrumentalists playing cornettos, sackbuts and strings join with vocalists to present majestic works of Gabrieli and Monteverdi, in collaboration with Tesserae, a Los Angeles based Baroque ensemble. A special preconcert performance of Italian folk music begins at 3:15 p.m. Audience Perks In addition to the concert programs, audiences are invited to enjoy Baroque music performed al fresco, beginning 45 minutes before curtain time, by the South Coast Brass — except on June 25,
when a special event is planned instead. Following each concert performance, audience members and musicians enjoy mingling for conversation and refreshment at a wine and waters reception. Information and Tickets The Baroque Music Festival offers a subscription for all five concerts at $280 that provides premium seating at each event and a private post concert dinner following the Festival Finale on Sunday, June 25. Additional information about the 2017 Baroque Music Festival, as well as ticket sales for this year’s series or single concerts (ranging from $30 to $50), may be found at the Festival website www.bmf-cdm.org or by calling (949) 760-7887. About the Festival Since 1981, the Baroque Music Festival, Corona del Mar, has evolved as both an esteemed and popular cultural institution in Orange County, California. Acclaimed instrumentalists and vocal soloists assemble for the annual Festival in June, performing primarily on period instruments in intimate settings. Concert goers have described the performances as “rapturous” and “riveting”; music reviewers from the Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register and other local publications consistently offer glowing reviews. The Festival’s all volunteer Board of Directors is committed to presenting high quality Baroque music every summer.

PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated
(approved) The Newport News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people
of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising.

Do ’s and don’ts of shopping for dads and grads Father’s Day and graduations are coming up, and that means you’ll have to think of appropriate gifts for these heralded champions. You don’t need to spend a fortune to make gift recipients happy, all you do need to do is put some thought into their presents. A few tips and tricks will help you pick out a gift the recipient is sure to love. Here are some do’s and don’ts for shopping for dads and grads: Do: * Know what Dad enjoys. Does he like to cook? To read? Enjoy a specific sports team? It’s easier to buy a gift he’ll enjoy when you tailor it to his tastes. * Consider giving your grad cash. Whether he or she is graduating from high school or college, there will be late-night pizza needs that pop up, and that money is sure to come in handy. * Check your area for unique experiences. Being a tourist in your hometown can be easier than you think - whether it’s a trip to a local street fair, a specialty beer tasting at nearby watering hole, or even an afternoon at the ball game, sometimes sharing the experience can be the best gift.
* Spread your gift out through the whole year with a subscription to Netflix for Dad’s movie obsession, Hulu Plus for TV-lovers or Pandora for your grad with a music library that rivals Billboard’s Hot 100.- Almost all online streaming devices from TVs to Blu-ray players and even a sound bar from LG can give him access to his subscription. *Grads would love a place to plug in their music, and a docking station is perfect for everything from visiting a friend’s dorm room to just lounging around the apartment. With the ability to wirelessly stream from both iPhones and Androids, LG’s dual docking station can play from any phone in the area and keep them charged in the meantime. Don’t: * Buy Dad a tie. Beyond being cliche, with today’s casual workplace, he probably has more than enough already. Nothing says “forced smile” like a tie. * Buy your grads gift card for specific stores. By now, they’ve got their own flair and style, and you’ll run the risk of missing the mark. Best to throw a cash card or two in the mix, and call it the “gift of shopping.” * Give your grad the customary
graduation pen - it will be “lost” or act as the resident paper weight until he/ she moves out. * Buy exercise equipment unless you know it will be used. Just because you think Dad should start exercising, doesn’t mean he shares your enthusiasm - and you’re implying he needs to lose weight (not what he wants to hear).
* Skimp on technology. It changes quickly - that’s why stores have those clearance tables. No need to break the bank, but don’t buy something that’s outdated the moment you walk out of the store. Regardless of what you give a grad or Dad, she or he will appreciate it the most when your gift comes from your heart. -(BPT) T:5.7”
accepted, the Trustee may withhold the issuance of the Trustee’s Deed Upon Sale until funds become available to the payee or endorsee as a matter of right. The property offered for sale excludes all funds held on account by the property receiver, if applicable. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
