tips to con q uer your packing challenges while traveling Whether it’s business travel, family road tripping or a romantic getaway, exploring new places is exciting. You may be counting down the days until you leave, but if there’s one thing you dread, it’s packing. Deciding what earns a spot in your suitcase is hard enough, let alone figuring out how you can fit it all in. Do you look with envy at savvy jetsetters who seem to navigate airports with ease while only toting a small carry-on? It’s because years of travel experience has taught them some packing tricks that make the process simple. Now you can use these same strategies to pack with ease no matter how near or far you plan to travel. Select double-duty clothing items. Check the weather for your destination so you pack only items appropriate for the forecast. You won’t need that big sunhat if rain is coming. Want to take it one step further? Choose items that multitask. For example, a large scarf can be a stylish accessory and also be used as a blanket on the plane or at the beach. Pack toiletries strategically. If possible, only bring samples and travel sizes of items to save space. Then leave them behind at the end of the trip to open up luggage space to bring home mementos. To avoid luggage spills and explosions, place toiletries in plastic bags or add plastic wrap to the tops before screwing on the cap. Choose time-saving tools. Air drying hair takes forever and hotel hair dyers are often slow and unreliable, so pack a lightweight, folding dryer like the Panasonic EH-
NA27-K Nanoe Compact Hair Dryer to streamline your beauty routine. The nanoe technology draws moisture from the air to create moisture-rich ions that penetrate each hair shaft and enhance hair’s smoothness and shine. Need more incentive? The unique Quick-Dry Nozzle is designed to dry hair faster, so you can spend less time getting ready and more time enjoying your vacation. Fold to prevent wrinkling. To prevent wrinkles on delicate items, try wrapping them around soft, bulky items. For example, wrap a silk blouse or cotton trousers around a sweater. Avoid folding clothing any more than necessary. In fact, many people use a rolling method for packing clothes to save space and prevent wrinkles. Utilize odd-shaped items. Shoes take up a ton of luggage space, so strive to select no more than three pairs, and wear the heaviest or
bulkiest pair while traveling. Place shoes along the sides or bottom to strengthen the bag and then stash items inside to maximize space (like socks, nylons and deodorant). Eliminate makeup mayhem. Only bring makeup essentials on a vacation and pack multi-use items such as a lipstick that can also be used as a blush. To prevent shadows and pressed powders from cracking, place a pressed cotton pad between the powder and the lid. Grab a few plastic bags. One of the most versatile things you can bring on a trip is also one many people forget: resealable plastic bags. Whether you need a bag for bringing toys down to the pool, a place to put dirty clothes throughout your trip, or something to place that soggy swimsuit in before you check out of the hotel, plastic bags are your secret weapon. - (BPT)

Tips to avoid distracted driving The pace of business never seems to stop, and thanks to the convenience of cell phones, many people work on the go, even while they’re driving. Yet cell phone use is one of the most common type of distracted driving, and it claims thousands of lives and causes thousands more injuries every year. More than a quarter of all car crashes involve cell phone use, both hand sets and hands-free, the National Safety Council (NSC) reports. In 13 percent of fatal crashes, the drivers were using cellphones, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says. The actual number of cell phone-related accidents is likely much higher, since many states don’t yet compile and report data on cell phone use following a crash. Employers take up the issue Recognizing the ethical and liability issues that arise when employees drive while distracted, employers across the country have begun implementing distracted driving policies. Typically, these policies prohibit employees from using cellphones while driving on company time. In January 2017, the NSC reported
that Cargill was the largest privately held company to prohibit the use of mobile devices, including hands-free technology, while an employee is driving on behalf of the company. The ban also covers work related calls while commuting to and from work, even if employees are driving their own vehicles. “There is a time and place for doing business, and it’s not while you’re driving,” says Melanie Burke, director of health and safety at Cargill, a Minnesota-based privately held company with 150,000 employees around the world. Even Cargill’s Chairman and CEO David MacLennan is subject to the ban. In announcing the policy to employees in late 2016, MacLennan noted he was 138 days into cellphone free motoring. “It’s been liberating,” he told employees. NSC data shows about 20 percent of Fortune 500 companies have instituted cell phone bans, and of those, just 1 percent believe the ban affected productivity. Replace risk, keep productivity Taking care of business doesn’t mean you have to risk a crash. Here are six ways to keep up with the pace of business without using your cell
phone in the car: * Use an automated response app to let callers know you’re driving and can’t take their call at the moment. These free apps allow you to personalize the response and set your phone to automatically reply with a text message to incoming calls or texts. * If you’re driving a vehicle outfitted with communication technology, use its “do not disturb” feature to unplug from calls and texts while behind the wheel. * Use shared calendars to block off times when you’ll be on the road and unable to answer a call. The calendar item will help alert coworkers and anyone else connected to your calendar when you’ll be out of touch and when they might be able to reach you again. * Remove temptation. A study by AT&T found 62 percent of drivers keep their phones within reach in the car. Put yours away where you can’t see or reach it. You can place it in your purse, briefcase or messenger bag, and place the bag in the back seat. Further reduce distraction and temptation by turning your device off before stowing it. * If you absolutely must take a call
while on the road, pull over in a safe location. If a call comes in while you’re driving, allow it to go to voicemail until you’re safely pulled over, then return the call. * Be aware of other dangerously distracting behaviors, such as putting on makeup, tying a necktie or eating while driving. Do all your dressing and personal grooming before you leave home, and if you must snack while driving, choose food that is easy to manage, like a granola bar (unwrap it when you’re stopped), rather than something messy like a burger with all the fixings. “Before we had cellphones, if you had to take a business call while on the road, you would pull over and find a pay phone,” says Burke. “Productivity was fine and business got done. When it comes to time behind the wheel, safety is everyone’s most important job.” - (BPT)

Center Court and John French Ace the $10,000 United States Hunter Jumper AssociationInternational Hunter Derby Winners Abound with Special Awards
John French celebrates the win aboard Center Court with EquiFit Groom’s Award winner Daniel Soto and Blenheim EquiSports’ Melissa Brandes Photos by: Captured Moments Twenty-five derby horses took to the grand prix field on Friday afternoon for the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby at the Showpark Ranch & Coast Classic. It was John French aboard Center Court who emerged victorious, leading both rounds and finishing with a two-round total of 383. Truly a magical victory, the handsome bay turned eight years old this week and this spectacular win marked his eighth derby victory. Topping the pros,
junior rider Augusta Iwasaki and Small Adventure took home the overall red ribbon with an outstanding two-round total of 359. The judging panels drew from all over the country, with Chris Wynne (VA) and John Roper (TN) comprising one panel joined by Bill Ellis (FL) and Kathryn Griffiths (CA) who made up the second panel. Thomas Hern designed a flowing yet challenging track for the classic round. Riders who returned for the handy round were
Augusta Iwasaki and Melissa Brandes
then tested through both tight turns and options for long gallops. With a score of 88 + 7 bonus points from Panel One added to 89 + 9 bonus points from Panel Two, and 3 high option points, French and Center Court earned an impressive 199 in the second round, acing the competition. “In the Handy, you needed to turn pretty tight on the back side of the jumps. I wanted to make sure that [Center Court] was following me and landing on the leads so it would be really smooth,” French described. “He couldn’t have been better in the Handy.” French noted that Susie Hutchison has been working with the horse since the Blenheim Spring Series and came to help them prepare for the derby. “It meant a lot to me that he won because I know she put a lot of time into him,” he said. This derby title wrapped up a successful show for French and Center Court, who were Champions in the High Performance Hunter division earlier in the week. Going forward, he has plans for Center Court to make his USHJA Derby Championship debut this August in Lexington, Kentucky. Along with the tri-colored ribbon, French won the Roeckl Sports Winning Rider Award, taking home a pair of Roeckl Sports gloves, and the Blue Ribbon Blankets Winning
Trainer Award. It was Center Court’s owner, Kristen Hiller of Hiller Farms LLC, who won the Balmoral Winning Owner Award. Center Court performed beautifully over the jumps but also looked impeccable, earning his groom Daniel Soto the EquiFit Groom’s Award for Best Turned Out Horse. As she did in the Spring, Augusta Iwasaki won The Plaid Horse Highest Placing Junior Rider Award. The action in the grand prix field continues this weekend. Saturday afternoon highlights include young show jumpers competing in the $7,500 Interactive Mortgage Horses 10&U Futurity, followed by a solid group of competitors, including Will Simpson, Rich Fellers, Richard Spooner, Nayel Nassar and more, in the $60,000 Grand Prix of California, presented by EQU Lifestyle Boutique. Blenheim EquiSports, an equestrian event management company based in San Juan Capistrano, CA, produces events in three locations: San Juan Capistrano, Del Mar and Las Vegas, NV. The events include USEF “Premier” rated hunter-jumper shows featuring multiple grand prix events, a Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League event, USHJA International Hunter Derbies, Pony Finals, Medal Finals and more. T he benefits of probiotics for babies With the increasing number of products in the marketplace containing probiotics, many new parents might be wondering if their babies could benefit from probiotics. To answer that question, it is important to understand the role of the body’s microbiota, the living organisms that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract. Humans have trillions of bacteria good, bad, and neutral - living in their gastrointestinal systems. Research shows that in the same way harmful bacteria in the gastrointestinal system can attack the body, good bacteria, also known as probiotics, can help support it. This relationship leads to a balanced and well-functioning gastrointestinal system. For babies, ingesting probiotics may help support the developing digestive tract and immune system. Breastfed babies naturally get probiotics, as research has demonstrated that breastmilk contains probiotics. Mothers unable to breastfeed, or those who choose to offer formula, still have options to ensure their baby is building up adequate amounts of this good bacteria by feeding their baby an infant formula with probiotics. Gerber(R) Good Start(R) infant formula is the only formula line with probiotics available in all milk-based powders. While there are thousands of different probiotic strains, Gerber
Page 8
selected probiotics based on the available research and benefit for specific infant needs. For example, Gerber(R) Good Start(R) Gentle formula is a routine formula for healthy-term infants that uses Bifidobacterium lactis (B. lactis) because this probiotic has been shown to help support a healthy immune system and is similar to probiotics naturally found

in breastmilk. Gerber(R) Good Start(R) Soothe formula is for babies experiencing colic, excessive crying and fussiness, so it features the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri). Studies using this probiotic have shown that it reduces the amount of time colicky infants may cry. Both L. reuteri and B. lactis are recognized as safe for use in infant
formula by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Keep in mind, all infant formulas are carefully regulated by the FDA. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life offers the ideal nutrition for babies, but whatever leads parents to use infant formula, they now have an option that contains important good bacteria similar to those found in breastmilk. - (BPT)

Encore for Education Charity Concert Raises Over $160,000 for OC Public School Music Programs
Cheap Trick play at the House of Blues Anaheim (Rick Nielsen, guitarist; Robin What better way to celebrate a music program for kids than to have a Zander, lead singer and guitar; Daxx Nielsen, drums; Tom Petersson, bass). rockin’ concert with a live performance by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band, Cheap Trick? Encore for Education did just that – a commercial real estate industry charity raised $161,345 to benefit Music Matters, a program created by Buchannan Children’s Charities and the Orange County Community Foundation – ALL to restart Orange County public school’s music programs. This was the fifth Encore for Education concert since Buchanan Children’s Charities was founded in 2007 and was attended by more than 1,300 people, the highest attendance in history. The concert was held at the new House of Blues in Anaheim and featured for the VIP’s tray passed goodies of Pulled Pork Sliders, Grilled Veggie Flatbread, Vegetarian Spring Rolls, Petite quesadillas with chicken – a taco station with all the fixings along with a pita/hummus and a yummy soft pretzel station with a ton of sauces to pick from (cheese, marinara, peanut butter and mustard!). General admission ticket holders were not left out as they noshed on Tater Tot stations that had a choice of cheese sauces, Carnitas and delicious BBQ Pulled pork and veggies. The LIVE performance from Cheap Trick did not disappoint as they were on fire as always. Playing a few of their hits such as “I Want You to Want Me”, Katie Schulte, Nicole Inal and Sheila Fein honor Steve Fein (far left) “Surrender” and “Dream Police” got everyone dancing on the floor, even me! “This year’s Encore for Education was our greatest success yet,” for his decade of donations. said Robert Brunswick, president of Buchanan Children’s Charities and CEO of Buchanan Street Partners. “With the money raised this year for Music Matters, we are able to restart three public school district’s music programs, allowing thousands of students to benefit from music education.” Funds raised at Encore for Education 2017 will go towards purchasing instruments impacting more than 1,000 students annually at the Ocean View, Cypress and Centralia School Districts. The grant also allows the districts to hire music teachers and purchase supplies to launch elementary music education programs. During the check presentation, Brunswick honored long time supporter Steve Fein for his decade of giving which is in excess of $75,000. “This grant touches more than the students from this year,” said Steve Venz, Coordinator of Visual and Performing Arts at the Orange County Department of Education. “Future students who will participle in music education programs will be impacted for many years to come.” Buchanan Children’s Charities, a 501(c) (3) organization, was founded to measurably improve the lives and educational opportunities for children in Dave MacLeod with Anita Mellon, Cynthia Murnane and Rachel Orange County. Since its inception in 2007, Encore for Education has raised Svoboda. $805,450 for the Music Matters initiative. A portion of the proceeds also supported Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Orange County to provide support and resources to advocate for children in need. “Encore for Education is our charity’s signature event and is built around the commercial real estate industry,” said Brunswick. “We will continue to produce this event for many years to come and we look forward to growing our partnership with CASA OC to impact even more children in Orange County.” Buchanan Children’s Charities is a 501(c) (3) that was founded in 2007 by Buchanan Street Partners, a real estate investment management firm, to measurably improve the quality of life and educational opportunities for children. Buchanan Children’s Charities is a corporate catalyst for communicating to other companies about the value of corporate philanthropy and the opportunities available to make a tangible impact in our communities. When it comes to pairing wine with food, even experts agree that desserts can pose a challenge. A wide variety of flavor combinations can make it hard to find the perfect selection to serve with your sweet treat. While there’s no exact science to wine pairing, these simple tips can help you make your selection. Sweet Cheesecake A good rule: the lighter the dessert, the lighter the wine. Avoid heavy reds for a sweeter dessert and instead pair with a crisp white like Chardonnay, such as Joseph Carr from Sonoma, California. Citrusy Lemon Meringue Pie Lemon flavors can sometimes be polarizing, but complementing this dessert with an equally citrusy wine can work wonders. Try pairing with a food-friendly pinot grigio or a sauvignon blanc. Rich Chocolate Cake Red wine with chocolate seems like a no-brainer, but not all red wines are created equal. For a richer delicacy like this devil’s food cake, try something like Villa Pozzi Nero D’avola, a more fruit-forward, easydrinking red varietal. This North American tour is in celebration of Eifman Ballet’s 40th anniversary. Eifman’s works appeal to the dance fan as well as those who crave powerful and provocative theater. Red Giselle is set during the beginning of the 20th century, an era of worldwide revolution, expatriation and personal tragedies, and Eifman’s ballerina is both a force and a victim in this captivating psychodrama. The New York Times declared, “It is a highly dramatic and theatrical (the two are not the same) work, a perfected form of narrative ballet for which others in the West have strived.” In Eifman’s own words about Red Giselle, “Our ballet is dedicated to Olga Spessivtseva, one of the greatest ballerinas of the 20th century. I was shocked to learn the details of her life; this unique actress bathed in glory, worshipped by admirers and critics, later spent 20 years in a mental clinic near New York, totally alone and deprived of her rights! And it was the deep and tragic sadness I felt when I learnt this that motivated me to produce Red Giselle. The ballet is not an illustration for Spessivtseva’s biography, but an attempt to draw a generalized picture of her fate and of those of many talented people who were forced to leave Russia and finally came to a tragic end.” Tickets for Eifman Ballet start at $29 and are on sale now at SCFTA. org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa, or by calling (714) 556-2787. For inquiries about group ticket savings for 10 or more, call the Group Services office at (714) 556-0236. Ticket holders are invited to attend Free Preview Talks one hour prior to each performance. The Friday, June 16, 2017 Preview Talk will be sign-language interpreted.

Boris Eifman engages his spectators in the infinite world of human passions, forming a spiritual connection with the audience and amazing viewers with the brilliance and dynamism of his choreography. All of this has ensured the decades-long success of Eifman Ballet’s performances at leading venues around the globe. His works have inspired ballet lovers in Asia, Europe, the Americas and Australia.

Tchaikovsky, I, Don Quixote, Red Giselle, Russian Hamlet, Anna Karenina, The Seagull, Onegin, Rodin, Beyond Sin, Requiem, Up & Down and others represent the highest artistic level of achievement in contemporary Russian ballet. Eifman is a philosopher choreographer. He is concerned with the problems of today and with the secrets of creativity. The choreographer speaks openly with his audience about the complicated and dramatic aspects of human life; he defines his genre as “psychological ballet”. The New York Times calls Boris Eifman the leader among living choreographers, “The ballet world in search of a major choreographer need search no more. He is Boris Eifman.” Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg was established by Boris Eifman in 1977 (the original name of the company was the Leningrad New Ballet). The concept of the New Ballet was more than innovative for its time: from the first days of its work it was conceived and developed as an experimental laboratory, a ballet theatre for one choreographer. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is an acclaimed arts institution as well as a beautiful multi-disciplinary cultural campus. It is committed to supporting artistic excellence on all of its stages, offering unsurpassed experiences, and to engaging the entire community in new and exciting ways through the unique power of live performance and a diverse array of inspiring programs. Gillespie School, where students ages 3 – 14 are taught by acclaimed teachers utilizing the renowned ABT National Training Curriculum in studios utilized by the world’s greatest dancers and choreographers. The Center presents a broad range of programming for audiences of all ages, including international ballet and dance, national tours of top Broadway shows, intimate performances of jazz and cabaret, contemporary artists, classical music performed by renowned chamber orchestras and ensembles, family-friendly programming, free performances open to the public from outdoor movie screenings to dancing on the plaza and many other special events. The Center’s education programs are designed to inspire young people through the arts and reach hundreds of thousands of students each year. In addition to the presenting and producing institution Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the 14-acre campus also embraces the facilities of two independently acclaimed organizations: Tony Award®-winning South Coast Repertory and a site designated as the future home of the Orange County Museum of Art. of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Frank Lloyd Wright Waterfall Home For Sale On His 150th Birthday Out of over 500 structures built from Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs, there are residential homes, museums, churches, commercial buildings, mausoleums and more stretching from the United States around the world. He not only concentrated on the plans, but paid special attention from the building site to the interiors, designing the furniture, lighting fixtures, stained-glass windows and decorative ceilings. Most of Wright’s work was inspired by his appreciation of the simplicity and functionality of Japanese design where large walls of Shoji doors could be pulled back to expose calm gardens that became an integral part of the whole living experience. During his career, Wright created four design styles: Prairie, Textile, Organic and Usonian. Out of these designs have come many of the features we use and love today such as the open floor plan, radiant floor heat, which he began using in 1935, and glass walls and doors. TopTenRealEstateDeals.com has rounded up five of the most interesting Frank Lloyd Wright houses that are currently or recently on the market. “Frank Lloyd Wright’s Running Water Home” One of Wright’s most interesting homes and a stunning location was built in 1955 in New Canaan, Connecticut in the hemicycle, or horseshoe shape. Tirranna, the native American word for running water, encompasses 7,000 square feet of living space on the Noroton River and a waterfall along with 15 heavily wooded acres. In recent years, Tirranna was owned by memorabilia mogul and philanthropist Ted Stanley and his wife, Vada, who carefully restored the home’s original gardens and replaced any previously sold loose
Page 16
items designed by Wright with reproductions. The home’s most striking feature is the curvature of Tirranna and its glass walls which offer a panoramic view of the Noroton River and a dramatic waterfall. Unusual for Wright in its amenities and more adapted to busier lifestyles, larger families and need for more guest space, there is a rooftop observatory with telescope, a caretaker’s suite, a guest studio, gold-leaf chimneys and the master suite has his-andher baths. Overall, there are seven bedrooms and nine baths. Also included are a large barn, swimming pool patio, tennis courts and sculpture paths to the river’s edge. Doug Milne of Houlihan Lawrence is the listing agent. With the death of his parents, Ted and Vada’s son, Jonathan, listed the property for sale with all the proceeds to be donated to charity. Tirranna, Frank Lloyd Wright on a grand scale and lovingly restored, originally priced at $8 million; it has been reduced to $7.2 million.
