Uncover the latest trends in swimwear toppers By Sharon Mosley Associated Press Courtesy of creators.com Sheer tunic cover-ups are must-haves for a beach vacation. Vix cotton ruffle tunic (www.vixpaulahermanny.com). Swimwear cover-ups have swum a long way since the days of oversized T-shirts. Now you can wear your cover-up out to dinner and no one will ever guess you’ve been at the beach all day, thanks to the new “un-cover-ups.” Here are some ways to rethink your swimwear wardrobe this summer while spending more time enjoying the outdoors both in and out of the water. THE SWIM DRESS. One of the most versatile items you can wear over your swimsuit or by itself, the swim dress is the ultimate cover-up. In crinkle cotton or slinky jersey, in short or long hem-lengths, short sleeves or long sleeves, you can determine the coverage. Look for swim dresses in fabrics with sun protection for even more value. THE EMBELLISHED TUNIC. More of a long top than a dress, tunics have become one of the best go-to’s for any summer wardrobe, on and off the beach. Decorative embroidery, stones and beading add even more interest. In the season’s newest and brightest floral prints, tunics have bohemian flair. Sheer tunics are light and airy, a perfect choice for layering over swimsuits. THE BUTTON-FRONT SHIRT. Another versatile “un-cover-up” which can do double duty in your wardrobe year-round is a button-up shirt. From short, white classics to longer shirt dresses, these breezy shirts easily button up over swimwear and Page 2

are flattering to a wide variety of beach bodies. Try one in chambray to add a touch of Western spirit. THE ANORAK JACKET. When the sun is sizzling, a heavy jacket is not what you pack in your beach bag, but if it’s a cooler evening or cloudy day, then a lightweight anorak may be the perfect “un-cover-up.” Choose from their rainbow colors complete in all-weather waterproof nylon. You’ll be prepared for any kind of day at the beach, come rain or shine. THE CAFTAN. If you want long and loose, but lots of glamour, a caftan may be the ultimate “uncover-up” for you. Kaftans or caftans originated in the Middle East and are now common all over the world. The flowing garment is popular at pool parties and has an old Hollywood kind of je ne sais quoi. You can even custom design your own caftan featuring prints of your favorite pet. Meow! THE SWIM SEPARATES. With so many options available in swimwear collections, there are more ways than ever to cover up than ever before. Today’s options include long-sleeved tee rash guards and SPF-infused board shorts available in a variety of colors. Another choice given to swimmers are the high-waist miniskirts complete with tummy control. There’s something for everyone, not only to protect your skin from harmful sunburn, but to help disguise any uncomfortable parts you don’t want people to see. Don’t forget to accessorize. Oversized scarves make great cover-ups, along with other important summer must-haves: hats and sunglasses.

Gary Griggs, Author and Professor, to Speak on Coastal Hazards

The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) is hosting a keynote presentation featuring Gary Griggs, author of Coasts in Crisis: A Global Challenge and professor of Earth Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz on July 18, from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm. Guests are invited to learn about the fragile the coastal zone, home to nearly half of the world’s population, and how future sea-level rise is one of the greatest challenges facing human civilization. Guests can register for this free public workshop at newkirkcenter.uci.edu With about 150 million people around the world living within threefeet of high tide, and hundreds of millions more within a few more feet, future sea-level rise may well be one of the great challenges facing human civilization. Griggs will present the entire coastal zone in global perspective as a region under threat. Specifically relevant to California, Professor Griggs will focus on the question, “Where do we go from here?” As he wrote in his recent book, Coasts in Crisis, “the future choices we make about our coasts and oceans are decisions about who we are, what we value, what kind of world we want to live in—the world our children and grandchildren will inherit. The stakes are very high.”

An Evening with Gary Griggs is part of the “Strengthening Coasts for a Resilient Future” workshop on July 18 & 19. For information on this free program, or to register, please visit http://newkirkcenter.uci.edu This program is presented by Blue Earth Consultants, Empowering Sustainability, UCI Oceans, UCI Newkirk Center for Science and Society, UCI Social Ecology and the Environmental Nature Center. Carly Anthony and Clochard celebrate the win in the $25,000 Markel Insurance 1.45m Jumper Classic

Carly Anthony and Clochard Stake Their Claim in the $25,000 Markel Insurance Jumper Classic Shawn Casady & Durango VDL Top the Field in the U25 Jumper Classic Photos by McCool my plan is always just to keep up Casady is handling the job well. produces events in three locations:

Carly Anthony and Clochard, owned by Neil Jones Equestrian, Inc., topped the field of 21 competitors in today’s $25,000 Markel Insurance 1.45m Jumper Classic. Shawn Casady rounded out the podium with second aboard Durango VDL and third on Campitello 5, both owned by Highpoint Farm, LLC. First to go in the jump-off, Anthony’s inside turns and Clochard’s big stride led to a double clear performance in an impressive time of 37.55 seconds. Although Casady was also double clear on both his mounts, he could not catch Anthony and Clochard. International course designer Michel Vaillancourt built a challenging 1.45m track on The Oaks International Grand Prix Field that included many related direct and bending lines, leading to just three fault-free rounds, one round with two time faults, and four riders with scores of four faults. “I liked the course out there today. He jumped great in both rounds today,” Casady noted. “I look forward to competing with him and the rest of the horses throughout the season.” Casady has taken over the reins for Tina Yates of Highpoint Farm, LLC, as she and her husband Craig are expecting their first baby in July. Protect your eyes year-round from UV exposure Eye protection may not be a top priority for people when they are going about their daily lives, but it should be. Protecting your sense of sight is extremely important and often overlooked. All individuals should protect their eyes so they can stay sharp whether they’re on a snowy mountain-top, watching a football game, or simply driving to work. Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.

Wearing a pair of comfortable sunglasses while you are staying active outdoors will not only prevent eye strains and squinting - which will help keep you looking younger, longer - but can actually help protect eyes from cataracts, keratitis and other eye ailments as well. When selecting sunglasses, look for a pair that will be lightweight and durable, so it will be comfortable to wear, and hold up to your daily activities. Charmant Titanium Polarized Sunglasses for example, are made with pure titanium, a hypoallergenic metal that is 48 percent lighter than conventional metals and is perfect for all seasons. Titanium is used in everything from airplanes to surgical instruments, so you know it will last in a sunglass. To protect the delicate eye area, look for a lens that has UVA and UVB protection as well as a polarized lens to reduce glare, which is much more harmful when it’s reflected off of the snow. Make sure your lenses offer the best visibility possible so they don’t interfere with your activities. Lenses with anti-smudge, anti-static, and water-repelling properties keep the lenses free of debris that can block your vision.

Invest in your sight. Your vision has an important role in maintaining your active lifestyle. Invest in your sight by ensuring you wear the best in corrective lenses and sunwear for you. Many people need their vision corrected through eye glasses or contact lenses. If you choose contact lenses, wearing sunglasses to prevent glare and protect your eyes from UV light is still very important. If you prefer to wear eye glasses, a pair of prescription sunglasses is ideal, to be worn whenever you are outside in daylight. These prescription sunglasses will provide the best possible coverage in sunlight while also correcting your vision. Either way, one should look for a quality pair of sunglasses that will provide consistent optical clarity throughout the lens, and a durable frame that will last. Don’t forget to protect the sensitive skin around your eyes as well with a sunscreen that has at least SPF 30. Even if the sun isn’t shining bright the UV rays can still penetrate the cloud cover. Make a broad sweep. Sometimes one layer of protection just isn’t enough. If you have fair skin, or light colored eyes, you may want

to wear a hat in conjunction with sunglasses on a regular basis. These physical traits are more prone to skin cancer and sun-causing eye disease. Although sunglasses do wonders in protecting the eyes, UV rays can still reach the eyes and the surrounding skin through the sides and top of the sunglasses. Wearing a hat will help to reduce the sun exposure and prevent uncomfortable eye strain. A wide brim hat offers sun protection to your skin as well as eyes, creating natural shade and reducing strain. Choose a hat with a dark, non-reflective underside of the brim. This will help reduce UV glare from reflective surfaces like water or snow. Staying active is great for your overall health, but be sure that you are safely engaging in activities. Taking steps to strengthen and protect your vision will help ensure that your eyes will be safe and healthy for years to come.

The beloved singer Prince’s Island Mansion Going To Auction!

Similar to other celebrities Taylor Swift, Ellen DeGeneres, Meg Ryan and Diane Keaton, the late rocker Prince was a bit of a real estate collector buying and selling homes from California to Europe. But by the end of his second marriage in 2006, Prince centered his real estate purchases around his home state, Minnesota. Multiple tracts of acreage and homes were accumulated with the most well-known being his Paisley Park Studios complex in Chanhassen, which included space for recording, rehearsing, a party venue and was the headquarters of his record label. Also making his home there, it was where he was found dead from an overdose of fentanyl in 2016. Though deeply invested in Minnesota, Prince did have one unpublicized glamour property squirreled away, which might have been his best - a private fiveacre oceanfront estate on a secluded peninsula on Providenciales Island in

Turks and Caicos. Two years after his death, Prince’s ocean house will be going to auction on July 12th. Designed for celebrity privacy, the 10,000-square-foot mansion is perched on a cliff 40 feet above the ocean with views of two private beaches, 200-foot private dock and panoramic ocean views. Built in island style, the massive sixbedroom, six-bath residence has dark, wood-beamed ceilings and walls of glass and doors that open wide to let in the sea breezes with access to the various terraces, pool and outdoor living spaces only a step away. The guard house is located at the entrance to the Prince signature purple driveway that passes the tennis court on the way to the mansion entrance. Located about 600 miles from Miami, the island is a popular vacation destination for Hollywood celebrities such as Brad Pitt, Christie Brinkley,

and Eva Longoria. Fashion designer Donna Karen, Keith Richards and Bruce Willis have owned homes on the island. Prince’s luxurious island estate, previously priced at $12 million, will be going up for auction with no starting

bid minimum. A refundable $100,000 bidder’s registration fee is required, and all bids must be delivered by July 12th. Premier Estates Auction Company is handling the sale. Source: premiereestates.com TopTenRealEstateDeals.com

2018 Hot Swimsuits Strutting the Best this season

With summer fresh upon us, selecting the perfect, form-fitting swimsuit requires the time and patience to try on and try out the latest and greatest. While my preference has always leaned toward Victoria Secret, look at these options and let us know what you think. Shaping Swimsuits: This is a perfect option for those who have a bit to hide in the tummy and hips as well as those who need a bit of help in the top. This swimsuit offers it all with flair of style as it highlights and adds the sexy curves that we all wish we had. One-Shoulder Swimsuits One-shoulder swimsuits are hardly new as a concept, though as with everything that cyclically emerges as a trend, the concept is infused with a fresh new take. With Luli Fama, the one-shoulder two piece that hit Page 8

Cute swimwear for the new season that was on par with several summer 2018 swimwear trends. Fun looks cover more than one trend is a crocheted tankini style top that laces up the V-neck. Sexy One pieces One pieces are not generally considered to be sexy, though options like T-Rivera and the Baywatch style swimsuits (which are revamped, of course) definitely break through. Most of the super sexy one pieces fall into at more than one of the above categories. The serious plunge of some of the necklines and cleverly placed cut outs on the one-piece swimsuit trends for summer 2018 are masterful. One-Shoulder Swimsuits One-shoulder swimsuits are hardly the runway was lightly pink, nearly nude, with a single shouldered top new as a concept, though as with that featured a short sleeve on one everything that cyclically emerges as side and a tie on the other, technically making it a string bikini. It was cute, fun and different. Full Coverage Swimsuit: This is a great choice for those who suffer with short torsos. This design of a flattering top takes full advantage of appearance. It allows the torso to be highlighted and draping into a longer torso. With basically full coverage front and bottom, the element of surprise is a fully open back. With the halter top and fully lined interior, the style and smooth lining add a dramatic beach effect. LYON AIR MUSEUM HOSTS “ Vintage Motor Racing with a Special Tribute to Dan Gurney” Exhibit

Lyon Air Museum, a world class showcase of historic aircraft and vintage automobiles, to host exhibit, “Vintage Motor Racing – with a Special Tribute to Dan Gurney.” Nine breathtaking examples of race cars that made motor racing history will be presented alongside historic aircraft, July 1 – September 3, 2018 at the Museum, located on the west side of John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California. Auto racing continues to be one of the world’s most popular spectator sports, with millions of enthusiastic fans attending racing events around the world every year. With humble beginnings dating back to the advent of the automobile itself, the sport has grown into an integral part of our global culture. Dan Gurney remains one of the

most significant drivers, constructors, and team owners in auto racing history. Getting his professional start in driving after returning home from the Korean War, he quickly racked up numerous victories, including four Formula 1 races and two 2nd place Indy 500 finishes, as well as overall wins at prestigious races such as Daytona, Sebring, and Le Mans. Dan’s win of the 1967 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa in the Gurney Eagle Weslake V12 racer, built by his own company, All American Racers, remains the only time an American-built car driven by its American designer occupied the winner’s circle of a Formula One World Championship event. A week later, after winning the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans, Gurney started the racing tradition of spraying champagne on the winner’s podium. Amongst the cars showcased during the special exhibit will be two Gurney Eagle Indy cars, representing All American Racer’s successful chassis campaigned at the 1968 and 1972 Indy 500. Also on display will be Dan Gurney’s personal 1963 Shelby Cobra, configured like that of the race car he drove at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1963.

In addition to the iconic Gurney race cars, among others, will be a 1927 Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix racer, a rare 1965 Alfa Romeo TZ2, a 1957 Porsche 356A Speedster, 1961 Porsche Abarth driven by Gerhard Koch to the German GT Championship in 1962, and the 1973/74 Kremer Porsche Carrera RSR that achieved the 1973 GT class win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with an incredible 8th place overall. These are truly rare and exceptional automobiles that are as timeless as they are beautiful, with many of them maintained in racing condition and still successfully competing on the historic motor racing circuit. Lyon Air Museum represents the realization of a dream of founder General William Lyon. As a former combat pilot, and ultimately Chief of the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1975 to 1979, his passion for aviation history and youth education is the driving force behind Lyon Air Museum. In establishing the Museum, General Lyon has created a world-class facility, offering educational tours and displays to inspire young people. The Museum has on exhibit some of the world’s rarest operational historic

aircraft and vehicles. Lyon Air Museum is located at 19300 Ike Jones Road, Santa Ana, CA 92707. 714/210-4585. info@lyonairmuseum.org. www. lyonairmuseum.org. Hours of operation are daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission rates: General admission--$12; Seniors and Veterans--$9; Ages 5-17--$6; Under age 5—Free. Groups of 10 or more-$1 off each visitor.

Kure It’s Inaugural Rivals Cup Golf Tournament Nets over $100,000 Goal

The Newport News

Photos by Jason Kurtz and Tony Lattimore Rivals United for a Kure, the major support group for nonprofit Kure It Cancer Research, which raises funds for underfunded cancers, held its inaugural golf tournament at Pelican Hill Golf Club in early June. A full contingent of golfers signed up for a beautiful, sunny day of golfing at the prestigious golf resort, later joining friends and family at the awards banquet and auction in a tent near the club house. The Rivals story is about the longstanding football rivalry between UCLA and USC, and the golfers came out to compete for the Rival’s Cup representing and routing for their respective team. It was close, but USC won the inaugural Rival’s Cup. The nice ending to the rivalry story is that raising funds for cancer research put aside any serious rivalry feelings and smiles abounded all-round. Among those leading the charge were Kure It board officer and Westport Properties Board Chair Drew Hoeven, whose late father Barry Hoeven founded Kure It 10 years ago, Briggs Electric CFO and Kure It board chair Todd Perry, Kure It board member and US Storage Centers and Westport Co-Chairs Burton and Linda Young, Dana and Tom Chou Properties President/CEO Charles Byerly, and tournament co-chairs Linda and Burton Young (USC) and Dana and Tom Chou (UCLA). Television host and country singer Matt Rogers led the fast-paced live auction, which showcased trips to top golf retreats, including Pinehurst, Wailea, Cabo Del Sol, Bandon Dunes and the venerable Masters in Augusta, Georgia. Golfer Michael Wong won both Pinehurst and Bandon Dunes and the Masters sold for $16,000 twice to Karen Jordan and Taryn and Chris Mead. Drew Hoeven said of the effort, “Seeing the Rivals United for a Kure campaign extend into the inaugural Rivals Cup Tournament makes me extremely proud. My father, Barry Hoeven, would be so happy to see Kure It raise even more money for UCLA Jonsson and USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Centers. Our first tournament was a tremendous success, and we are happy to announce that we netted well over our $100,000 goal for cancer research.” Sponsors included Title Sponsor US Storage Centers, Sperry Commercial and Sperry Equities, Briggs Electric, Kiwi II Construction, NPV Advisors, The Kure It board member Julie Alai Masters Tournament winner Karen Muller Company, Walker & Dunlop, Rolex, Rolls Royce of Orange County, and Didi Pearce. Jordan. First Foundation Bank, Elite OC Productions, Coast to Coast Copy Empower Graphics, Main Graphics, among others. The fourth Rivals United for a Kure Gala is being planned for Sunday, November 11, at the City National Grove of Anaheim. It is always held the Sunday prior to the famous football match-up between UCLA and USC the following Saturday. Kure It, Inc. is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing funding for translational research projects focused on kidney cancer and other underfunded cancers. The funds raised through Kure It directly support groundbreaking research at leading cancer centers. Founded by Barry Hoeven in 2007 after his diagnosis with kidney cancer, Kure It expanded to support all underfunded cancers when the vast disconnect between the number of people afflicted with cancer and the amount of funding available for research became apparent. To date, Kure It has raised more than $6 million for cancer research and holds strong to the belief in Funding Research = Saving Lives! For more information visit www.KureIt.org. PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated

If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people

of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising.

T

FAMILY FEATURES

he start of spring is the perfect time for new beginnings, including a fresh start on eating healthy. The trick is introducing smart eating habits so tasty and easy that your eating plan becomes more a way of life than a short-lived commitment. One easy way to achieve that habit is by adding watermelon to your daily diet, giving your body a low-calorie option to curb an appetite for unhealthy snacks. Set reasonable goals. A deprivation diet is destined to fail because eventually your body will rebel. Instead, aim for well-rounded meals with moderate portions. If weight loss is your ultimate goal, know that losing two pounds a week is generally considered the maximum, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Satisfy your sweet tooth. Everyone, even the most dedicated health food fans, experience cravings from time to time. Most experts agree that it’s OK to answer your sweet tooth – in moderation of course. Before you take the plunge, think about whether there are other options that could be a good substitute. For example, instead of a sugary candy bar, consider a naturally sweet slice of watermelon for a cholesterol-free, fat-free way to satisfy cravings at only 80 calories per 2-cup serving. Watermelon contains fiber and water, and packs a wealth of health benefits, including strong levels of vitamins A, C and B6. Stay well hydrated. During the warmer spring and summer months, it’s easy to let water consumption slide because you’re focused on entertaining and outdoor activities. However, the warm air can be hard on your body, so it’s important to keep that water flowing year-around. Most adults should aim for eight glasses of water each day, but you can also boost your water intake with foods that have a high water content, such as watermelon, which is 92 percent water and contains protein and fiber so you are satisfied on fewer calories while boosting your overall hydration. Find more inspiration for health-conscious habits at watermelon.org.
