Rethink Your Drink This Summer

From barbecues and birthdays to concerts and cookouts, summertime is the perfect time of year to bring everyone together. However, nice weather and outdoor events are also coupled with summer heat waves and high temperatures. Water – whether plain or sparkling – is a great way to help you stay hydrated all summer long without the calories and added sugar of other summer favorites like lemonade or punch. Healthy hydration in the summertime starts when you rethink your drink so you can beat the heat. To get started, these tips from Sarah Ladden, M.S., R.D., nutrition, health and wellness director at Nestlé Waters North America, can help keep you hydrated all summer long. Pack for the heat. The summer heat can mean an increase in water loss, which can put you at a higher risk for dehydration especially if you’re outside for long periods of time. Make sure to pack water for all your summer outings and hydrate before, during and after all outdoor activities. Add your own flavor. While bottled, filtered or tap water are all good choices for healthy hydration, some people simply prefer flavored beverages. The good news: it’s easy to customize water just the way you like it. This summer, wow your friends with a DIY sparkling water bar. Set out your favorite sparkling waters – include flavored waters for added fun – Page 2

alongside an assortment of seasonal berries, sliced fruit and fresh herbs, and let guests create their personalized refreshments. Make water fun. Jazz up a glass of your favorite water with a simple addition – decorative ice. Before filling your ice tray, add a few berries or cubed melon, fresh herbs like mint or rosemary then top with water and

freeze. Add a few cubes to a refreshing glass of water and enjoy just a hint of subtle flavor. Keep water close. It’s important to keep your body well-hydrated throughout the day, but it is easy to get busy and simply forget to drink. Keep water in convenient locations throughout your home, office or even in the car for a visual reminder to keep

sipping. Stocking water at the front of your fridge is another good habit so it’s the first choice kids or other family members see. This summer, rethink your drink with these tips to help make smart beverage choices. To learn more about healthy hydration, visit nestlewatersna.com. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Frank Lloyd Wright’s interior plans bring heart and hearth to Orange County’s Bowers Museum

The Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, California is pleased to announce Frank Lloyd Wright: Architecture of the Interior, a visitation of the interior home designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. Studying the obvious and subtle ways Wright created the visual character of interior space, even going so far as to meticulously design almost every object within a home, it is evident why almost 60 years after his death Wright is still known as the world’s most famous architect. The exhibition’s 19 reproduction drawings, 8 photographs, and 4 photographic murals of illustrate these interiors, often considered Wright’s greatest architectural accomplishments. Organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC, in cooperation with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Scottsdale, AZ, Frank Lloyd Wright is on view at the Bowers Museum from now through August 20, 2017. “Any building should be complete, including all within itself. Instead of many things one thing…It is the first principle of any growth that the thing grown be no mere aggregation… And integration means that no part of anything is of any great value except as it be an integrated part of the harmonious whole.”

– F r a n k L l o y d Wr i g h t , A n Autobiography, 1932. FRANKLLOYDWRIGHT F O U N DATI O N The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation was established by Frank Lloyd Wright himself in 1940 to be a cultural and educational institution and the primary conservator of his work. It is dedicated to inspiring people with the living experience of Frank Lloyd Wright’s ideas, philosophies, and body of work. The Foundation owns Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona and Taliesin in Spring Green, Wisconsin. Both are National Historic Landmarks with robust tour operations, educational outreach, retail operations, and other activities. The Foundation: runs the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, with fully accredited undergraduate and graduate degree programs (a continuation of the apprenticeship program Wright established in 1932); stewards the vast Frank Lloyd Wright Archives; owns and manages the intellectual property for all of Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs, drawings, plans, art, and other creations from his prolific 70 year career; and engages in a variety of meaningful outreach programs and partnerships – such as this exhibition. Master chocolatier will serve up French treats a n d c u l i n a ry m a s t e r p i e c e s a t 2 0 1 7 OC F a i r The 2017 OC Fair won’t just be a fried food frenzy. Award-winning pastry chef and master chocolatier Stephané Tréand will showcase his talents in the OC Promenade during the Fair’s run from July 14 through Aug. 13. Tréand, a Tustin resident, is the owner of The Pastry School and St. Pâtisserie Chocolat in Costa Mesa. His next adventure will be a booth at the 2017 OC Fair. From chocolate to croissants, macarons to meringues, Tréand will have a large variety of French treats at his booth. The big item will be a macaron gelato sandwich, which is a

first for the OC Fair. He will also have a chocolate orange tarte to represent Orange County and the OC Fair. Tréand’s demonstrations will feature tartlets, chocolate bonbons, truffles, caramels, macarons, cookies, marshmallows, profiteroles and more. On Sunday, July 30, he’ll be on the Main Stage creating a highly technical sugar art sculpture right before your eyes! Keeping with the OC Fair’s Farm Fresh Fun theme, Tréand will use the power of a fire torch to glue large pieces of the sugar together to create one magnificent piece of art. “My piece has to be unique for the

The Newport News

Fair,” Tréand said. “I don’t recycle ideas.” Tréand will also hold cookie decorating classes for kids and teens on July 27 and August 6. Although the cookies will be baked a head of time, it will be up to the kids to create their designs using the variety of colors of royal icing, edible pearls and more. “They won’t have to follow a recipe or anything, they will have total freedom to be creative,” Tréand said. “The creative freedom allows kids to create something they can feel proud of, so I think it will be really great for them.” Originally from Paris, Tréand got his start as an apprentice at a local pastry shop in Northern France, all while taking pastry courses one week per month in Vincennes, Paris. Tréand opened his first patisserie tearoom, Pâtisserie Tréand, in Brignoles in Provence in 1989. A few years later, he decided to share his passion of pastries with others and became a teacher at the CFA of St. Maximin. Tréand’s knack for sweets isn’t the only special thing about him. In 2004, he won the coveted Meilleur Ouvrier de France (M.O.F.), which is the most prestigious award given by the President of France to a professional

Pastry Chef and Master Chocolatier Stephané Tréand in a certain trade. Tréand led a stage demo at the 2016 OC Fair and was a huge success. This year he’ll have his own booth in OC Promenade. “People are very curious about the art of patisseries here,” Tréand said. “I’m looking forward to educating people and making people aware of working from scratch, artistry and French pastries.”

Tips to Get Your Yard Summer-Ready

Although you may be itching to get back outside, before you can relax there’s work to do. After enduring the wear and tear of fall and winter, most yards need attention to get back into summer shape. These tips from the experts at Sun Joe will help you clean up your entire yard in time for summer so there’s more time to enjoy the great outdoors: Garden – Prepare your planting bed by using a tiller before seeding. Loosening up existing soil helps water and nutrients reach your new plants’ roots. Better yet, add some manure before tilling to create a healthy growing environment. Trees – Spring and summer are all about new life and dead tree limbs hanging around your home can kill the mood. Instead of climbing up a rickety latter with clippers, keep your feet planted and use Sun Joe’s cordless Pole Chain Saw. This lightweight chainsaw allows you to saw off dead limbs and let gravity do the rest… just make sure to stand back using the 15-foot extension. Mulch – Use the mild weather of spring before it gets too hot to lay down or freshen up the mulch around your plants. A thin (2-3 inches deep) layer of mulch around your landscape will help keep roots cool in the upcoming summer months and warm when cooler weather inevitably

returns again. Grass – When your grass is recovering from the long winter, you should wait until your soil dries out before starting work on your lawn because being too eager and working on soggy soil can harm already tender new grass roots. Once your grass is alive and growing, mow only once you

need to – grass is at its healthiest if you cut no more than a third of the blade. Get your timing right and your neighbors will notice that the grass is always greener on your side. Driveway/Patio – Over the winter months, mildew, grime, dirt and stains have grown in your outdoor spaces, reduced curb appeal and destroyed

your yard. Sun Joe’s line of easy-touse electric pressure washers can make your spaces look brand new, delivering thousands of pounds of water pressure to demolish every square inch of dirt from your driveway, your patio, your sidewalk and even your home’s siding.

Reporter: The new plaza sounds like a wonderful way to attract new audiences, and offer free enriching opportunities and experiences to the public. Will you offer dance classes? I remember a few years ago when there were tango classes in the Plaza area. Morr: Yes, our tango classes were very popular and we will offer dance classes again in the new Plaza. We also have Monday Night Movies on a large screen and will continue with that programming. There is an stage and seating in on green knolls in a park like setting. The plans for the new Plaza also include an outdoor cafe that will be open throughout the day and during Plaza performances and events. Reporter: It will also be wonderful when the Orange County Museum is built in the remaining space. That will really build the Plaza and theater complex into a real cultural haven. How wonderful to have this quality, this enrichment of the arts in Orange County. That is one of the reasons why people move to Orange County. Because of Segerstrom Center and all of the amazing performances of world renowned dance companies. And over the years, since the the inception of the original Segerstrom Theater there has more and more development. Segerstrom Center is really a cultural luxury. Morr: Henry Segerstrom had the

vision and the ability to make the vision into a reality. Reporter: Well, now you continue building the vision. How many students are currently enrolled at the ABT Gillespie School? Morr: We have about 250 students in the ABT Gillespie School, taking classes in the afternoon after school in our theater studios. From beginning ballet to advanced and we recently started a new class in ‘Partnering.’ We can’t add too many more classes because we need the studio space also for rehearsals of dance companies that perform here. Reporter: Segerstrom Center is a theater first and the rehearsal space is a priority. But wonderful that you can also have dance training in remaining studio time. Do the parents bring their children to classes and pay tuition? Morr: Yes, and we also have scholarships available so that every talented child has a chance. Our students are often selected as supernumeraries in performances. They love being on stage and it is an inspiration for our students to be trained here with a chance to appear on stage with famous dancers. We have a wonderful Director who was a Ballet Mistress of American Ballet Theater, passionate about ballet and ballet history, who brings such depth and enrichment to our school. Reporter: Is the ABT Dance school working out well financially for the Center? Morr: We reinvest whatever we earn from tuition back into the program, with wonderful teachers and pianists. We offer live music for each of our classes. Also our Summer Programs are quite successful, with a long waiting list for both sessions of ‘From Broadway to Ballet.’ We have also initiated a summer program in dance and music for children with disabilities. R e po r t e r : Me a n wh i l e , y o u continue with your most important role as ‘dance impresario’ selecting potential presentations and making agreements with dance companies to perform here. The 2017-2018 Dance Season is exciting, and we still have a few more shows remaining this year. Morr: Eifman Ballet performs ‘Red Giselle’ in June and La Scala Ballet is performing July 28-30. Reporter: La Scala Ballet. I think of the famous La Scala Theater, where Verdi premiered his famous operas and all of the famous theaters of the world like the Mariinsky Theater, the Garnier designed l’Opera in Paris.

Judy Morr, Vice President of Segerstrom Center It’s exciting to see dance companies, everybody - for new audiences who who have performed in these famous can enjoy events for free in the Plaza theaters, perform at the Segerstrom and for sophisticated audiences who can experience new and innovative Center. Festival of Arts Celebrates 85th Anniversary with Renovation, Art, Special Events and More July 5 – August 31, 2017 The Festival of Arts Fine Art Show celebrates its 85th anniversary July 5 through August 31, 2017 in Laguna Beach, California. The Festival has been rated one of the top festivals in the nation and each year hosts 140 of Orange County’s most talented artists. Recent accolades include Orange County Register’s Best Place to Buy Original Art, Art Fair Calendar’s Top Five Art Fairs in the West and Top 5 Art Festival in the nation voted by USA Today readers. Live music, hands-on art activities, exhibitions of local student artwork and a wide variety of special events round out one of southern California’s favorite outdoor summer event. “Avid art collectors and festivalgoers will have an outstanding variety of fine art to browse and purchase as they walk among the artists displays,” says Marketing and Public Relations Director Sharbie Higuchi. The Festival of Arts is a professionally juried fine art show featuring a diverse selection of artwork including paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics, jewelry, and more from artists around Orange County. Since opening in 1932, thousands have shown and sold their artwork at the Festival and many have their work featured in the private collections of leading art collectors, celebrities, and museums around the world. In addition to the variety of artwork, the Festival of Arts offers a wide range of daily activities that the whole family can enjoy. The 2017 events calendar includes nightly live music, jazz concerts, wine and chocolate pairings, guided art tours and art workshops. Several special one-day events return this year, including the Festival Runway Fashion Show and Family Art Day. In 2017, the Festival of Arts debuts its brand new $10 million facility which features a new layout for the art exhibit area, workshops, gift shop and concert stage. Last remodeled in 1964, the renovated grounds have been updated to meet accessibility standards and incorporate progressive sustainability features. The plans also call for additional and updated restrooms and wider pathways. Tensile roof pavilions shelter artwork from sun and rain, the green lawn where patrons picnic and enjoy concerts is nearer to the entry, the gift shop is relocated and expanded, and the junior art exhibit has a prominent location near the entrance. “The Festival of Arts grounds have been completely transformed and modernized as a result of this Page 12

extensive renovation,” said Board President Fred Sattler. “We look forward to sharing our new ‘digs’ with our patrons and the community this summer during our 85th anniversary celebration.” The very first Festival of Arts started on August 13, 1932. To celebrate 85 years of art, the Festival is having a birthday bash on August 13, 2017 and admission to the art show is free all day. There are plans for a birthday cake, music, proclamations and much more honoring the Festival’s rich history. Also in celebration of the organization’s milestone anniversary, the Festival introduces a new event on Sunday afternoons. “A Salute to the Arts” is inspired by the original Festival of Arts, which featured a variety of artistic endeavors including theater, literature, dance and more. In 2017, each week will spotlight a different art form. Also as a nod to the first art show, the Festival is adding tea for patrons to enjoy during its fascinating Art Talks with artists every Wednesday. On Fridays, the Festival introduces a new music series, “Step into the Spotlight,” which brings to center stage some of those amazing voices that are usually seen (and heard) in the background. There’s an extraordinary lineup of back-up singers or backgrounds vocalists who “step into the spotlight” this summer. “Looking back at the original Festival of Arts in 1932, there was something for everyone to enjoy. That tradition continues today,” said Higuchi. “With beautiful art, nightly live music, workshops for all ages, and unique events, the Festival is truly a full arts experience.” EVENT INFORMATION Special Events For a complete list visit LagunaFestivalofArts.org. PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated

(approved) The Newport News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people

of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising.

When public notices reach the public, everyone benefits.

Some officials want to move notices from newspapers to government-run websites, where they may not be easily found.

This is like putting the fox in charge of the hen house.

Tips to turn your home into your own beauty salon

Giving yourself a professionallooking beauty makeover can be as simple as looking around your house. Whether it’s in your bathroom or your laundry room, all sorts of products already in your home can be repurposed to easily and quickly help you create this season’s on-trend looks from head to toe. Here are some tips to get you started. * Starting from the top ... no time for a shower? Grab a dryer sheet from your laundry room and rub it on your head to tame fly-aways while giving your hair a fresh scent. A dime-sized amount of hand or body lotion will also do the trick if you rub it lightly onto problem spots. * Q-tips cotton swabs can be used for creating a variety of on-trend beauty looks and are an easy and hygienic alternative to expensive makeup brushes. For special occasions, opt for metallic bronzy, gold tones on top of dark smoky eyes and bold lips. After applying your eye shadow and lipstick, use the cotton swab to dab loose pigment in a bronzy shade onto the inner corners of your eyes and in the center of your lips.- The subtle hints of gold will balance each other while giving you an immediate glammed up look. * Give those cotton swabs double duty for a manicure worth showing off. First, rub toothpaste on your nails to remove stains and add shine before using remover on the nail plate. Whether it’s applying a bold, seasonal color or a nail art design, the next step is up to you. Celebrity nail technician Kimmie Kyees, whose clients include today’s hottest pop stars and actresses, has a variety of tips for creating unique, DIY nail art, starting with having the right tools on hand. “Not all cotton swabs are created equal so I always make sure

I have plenty of Q-tips Precision Tips,” says Kyees. “They are the best quality with 100 percent cotton and the pointed ends are perfect for precise application. I use one end to apply or create a cool design and the other for cuticle clean-up, they are genius!” One of the easiest and most current trends is negative space. Apply a coat of bold, stylish nail polish such as oxblood to your nails. While nails are still semi-wet and tacky, dip the pointed end of your cotton swab in remover and precisely remove a section of the polish to create empty, negative space on the nail plate. A favorite is the “inverted V-shaped mani” with empty space in the shape of a “V” at the bottom of the nail, or you can come up with your own design, such as horizontal lines or a moon. Make sure to apply a thin layer of a clear top coat to seal the manicure in place. * Keep your perfect pout in place. Hold a tissue over your lips and lightly dust translucent powder over the tissue. This will help the color last from day to night. * Lipstick can equal blush.- When you’re in a bind, rub some lipstick between your fingers to warm it up, then lightly smooth onto your cheeks in an upward motion. Voila, rosy cheeks that perfectly complement your lips. Make sure you don’t apply the color too low or under the cheekbones. Place the color just a bit higher than you might think so it runs across the tops of your cheekbones and fades into your skin about an inch from your hairline.
