The Del Mar Race Track; An Experience to Treasure

I knew I was in for a treat and excitement was in the air as the patrons flooded through the ticket gates. The energy from the grandstands, holding nearly 44,000 people, Where beautifully dressed women, who upheld the longstanding tradition of wearing glamorous hats. The elegant grandstands began to rumble with excitement. My husband and I, were honored to attend as Mr. and Mrs. OntarioAmerica 2017, where we joined Mr. and Mrs. California-America 2017 to present a trophy to one of the winners. With the electric starting gate positioned on the track in front sight, the trumpeter, Les Kepics, played the classic melody “Boots and Saddles”; As you may already know Thoroughbred horses have been called to post ten minutes prior to the race time for well over a century with the brief rendition of “Boots and Saddles” which has been synonymous with starting off the races since Del Mar first opened in 1937. The “Real Good Deal Stakes “ is exclusively reserved for California bred 3 year olds, As one of the invited guests, it was my honor and priviledge to present the awards to the winner of that showcased sixth race, Gallantly, some with a bit of race time anxiety, the beautiful thoroughbred horses galloped around as their Jockeys gracefully saddled up and Page 4
mounted their horses , proceeded to promptly make their way over to the track, taking their places . We also took our place lined on the very edge of the track anticipating the starter to fire his pistol and start the race. It was, in my opinion, the best seat in the house. From there the crowd roars behind, we could smell the earthy fragrance of the freshlyraked turf on the track, and the sweet ocean breeze and feel the pounding of the horses’ hooves as they thundered over the finish line. It was an honor presenting Flavien Malinda Hutchins Mrs Ontario, Les Kepic and Kristi Eddy Prat, who rode Gary Barber’s “Mr. Mrs. California Hinx,” into victory. “Mr. Hinx” trained by Steven Miyadi , surged to the lead winning $85,000 for their share of the $150,000 “Real Good Deal Stakes. ” and was a great victory to add to Mr. Hinx career earnings which are estimated to be nearly $326,048. To conclude our eventful evening at the track, we were invited to enjoy an awesome concert performance by The Violent Femmes who performed as part of Del Mar’s Summer Concert Series. The Del Mar Concert Series will continue on this summer to include such artists as Lord Huron, Slightly Stoopid, The Revivavlists, and Steve Aoki. After the last race, admission into the concert is only $20. Concerts are free with racetrack admission, Grandstand admission before the last race is only $6. Braille Institute Orange County Hosts Free Seminar to Present Latest Research and Practices to Assist County Residents with Low Vision Free admission; Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Braille Institute Orange County, the premiere nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people with vision loss, will host its “Understanding Vision Loss and Macular Degeneration” seminar on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017 at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at 850 Health Sciences Road, Irvine, 92617 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. In Orange County alone, there are nearly 126,000 residents who are affected by vision loss, and this event and the programs offered by Braille Institute are designed to support their independence. The event’s speakers, Andrew Browne, M.D., Ph.D., clinical assistant professor with Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at University of California, Irvine, and Cathleen Kim, counselor with Braille Institute Orange County, will provide an overview on macular degeneration and the importance of stabilizing the foundation of vision as well as help attendees better understand vision loss. Seminar attendees can also learn more about the free programs and services offered through Braille Institute to help those with vision loss learn new ways to continue doing the things they love while also reducing the stigma of vision loss. More than 100 individuals are expected to attend this free event. People who are blind or visually impaired – as well as their family and caregivers – are encouraged to attend the event to learn more about the broad range of opportunities for local residents to live well with low vision throughout the year. All classes and workshops offered by Braille Institute Orange County through the Anaheim and Laguna Hills Neighborhood Centers are free of charge. According to a recent National Health Interview Survey, 20.6 million adult Americans reported vision loss that cannot be corrected with glasses or contacts – this is just more than six percent
of the U.S. population. Nearly 90 percent of Braille Institute Orange County students have some remaining vision, and it’s the organization’s mission to support independence as their students’ vision changes. Workshops and events, like the “Understanding Vision Loss and Macular Degeneration” seminar, help Braille Institute Orange County reach individuals and their loved ones who are facing vision loss. Photo by Kay Levie The nation’s top rodeo cowboys, ride into San Juan Capistrano this weekend – August 26 and 27, 2016 for the 17th Annual Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo, the richest two-day rodeo in America! Conducted at the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park in San Juan Capistrano, the annual Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo will produce some of the finest rodeo action in the nation as “the best of the best” in rodeo compete for $175,000 in prize money. Events scheduled for the two-day rodeo include Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Bull Riding, Tie-Down Roping, Steer Wrestling and Team Roping. Tickets are on sale now and will also be available at the Rodeo on a first come, first serve basis. “The 17th Annual Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo will feature the top 30 World Champion cowboys competing in each of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) events as they try to qualify for a place in the National Finals Rodeo,” said Gilbert Aguirre, Rodeo Committee President and Executive Vice President of Ranch Operations for Rancho Mission Viejo LLC, manager of the historic Rancho Mission Viejo cattle ranch in Orange County and master planner and developer of the Rancho Mission Viejo community. Aguirre noted that, while the annual Rodeo is a festive celebration of the golden age of early California rodeo tradition, it’s also an important part of the legacy of the Rancho Mission Viejo landholdings, which have been under the stewardship of the O’Neill/Moiso family since 1882. “This event is not only about wild horses and even wilder cowboys,” added Aguirre. “Hosting the Rodeo is our way of showing folks that we have a tremendous Western heritage, one that we feel privileged to share. The Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo allows us to keep our region’s cowboy culture alive while honoring the old cowboy tradition of
‘passing the hat’ in support of a sick child or needy friend.” Over the course of the last 17 years, $1.9 million in Rodeo proceeds have been donated to local charities. This year’s beneficiaries are the J.F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center in San Juan Capistrano, CHOC at Mission Hospital and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley. More than 9,000 Rodeo fans are expected to attend over the weekend. In addition to the excitement taking place in the arena, attendees will have access to nearly 60 vendor
booths and activities for the whole family. Attractions include a beer garden, live music, mechanical bull riding, official rodeo gear and pony rides. Photography “FANTASHEA—An Evening of Enchantment” drew a sold-out crowd of 430 friends and generous sponsors to support The J. F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center’s 26th annual gala at the Montage Laguna Beach. It was a comfortable coastal late afternoon that began on the Pacific Lawn that led into an evening of fun, entertainment, sociability, gourmet food and drink, awards, extraordinary auction items and dancing into the night. The gala raised funds to support one of the leading therapeutic riding centers in the world, Shea Therapeutic Riding Center. Its mission for nearly 40 years is to improve the lives of people with disabilities through therapeutic horse-related programs. From its modern eightacre equestrian facility aside the open space of San Juan Capistrano, it annually serves over a thousand Orange County clients with special needs. One of the highlights was the “Wine Wall.” As guests approached the wall of flowers, fashionably clad white satin gloved hands reached out through the wall offering a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay. It provided a great picture opportunity. This year’s Michael Lewis Friends of the Disabled Award was presented John and Sharon Frank having fun at the Live Auction with Barry to John Frank of John M. Frank Construction, Inc., and to The Spinello Axelrod. Family – Erin, Mike, Cade and Lucy. John Frank was recognized for his 11 years of invested time, treasure and talent at The Shea Center. Today, he serves as its board’s chair. The Spinellos were honored for their wonderful inspiration to other families by sharing their experience as parents to young Cade, while in the midst of their own journey to find wellness for their son. The Michael Lewis award is named after The Shea Center’s first rider in 1978. It is now given annually to celebrate the contributions of individuals, organizations, families and companies that positively affect the lives of people with disabilities at The Shea Center and in the greater community at large. This year’s featured rider was four-year-old Carter Peddie, daughter of Jenny and Will Peddie. Carter was born with an extremely rare genetic condition called PURA Syndrome with a later diagnosis of cerebral palsy. When the Shea Center came into Carter’s life at age 3, some remarkable changes occurred which were told in a moving documentary shown on the Grand Ballroom video screens. LYON AIR MUSEUM TO HOST “BIKES & BOMBERS” MOTORCYCLE SHOW Lyon Air Museum will host the 6th Annual “Bikes & Bombers” on Saturday, August 26, 2017, from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM at John Wayne Airport. The event includes free spectator viewing of motorcycles, a People’s Choice Motorcycle Show, complimentary coffee and donuts, a World War II veterans and military re-enactors meet and greet, and a scheduled flight by a vintage World War II T-6 Texan aircraft. The event kicks off Saturday morning at 9:00AM featuring cruisers, sport bikes, customs and vintage motorcycles, with hundreds expected to attend. People’s Choice bike show entrants will be accepted until 10:00 AM. Thousands of Volunteers to Make Orange County Beaches Sparkle with World’s Largest Trash Cleanup On September 16, thousands of Orange County residents will head to sites across the county to play their part in the world’s largest trash cleanup for Coastal Cleanup Day. Registration is now open for all 51 cleanup sites in Orange County, organized by Orange County Coastkeeper and Trails4All. Orange County beaches and waterways collect trash that travels from inland communities via the county’s rivers and storm drains. Beach cleanups stand as a last line of defense to prevent this debris from polluting the ocean and its wildlife. Orange County’s cleanup sites are included as part of California Coastal Cleanup Day, which encourages volunteers to leave the Golden State’s beaches sparkling. This statewide event is part of the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, the largest volunteer event on the planet. Last year, more than 7,200 Orange County volunteers collected more than 56,600 pounds of trash and recyclable materials during the threehour event. Some of the most obscure findings included Keurig machines, soda cans from the 1980’s and a Bosu balance ball. “So many people don’t understand the impact of coastal pollution until they see it up close,” says Lauren Page 12
Smith, Orange County Coastkeeper’s volunteer coordinator. “At Coastal Cleanup Day, people learn that small actions like removing trash from the sand can have a huge ripple effect.” Coastkeeper, the Huntington and Bolsa Chica State Beach Interpretive Offices and local partners will be hosting a Trash Free OC Jamboree at three cleanup locations after the event. The events will feature educational games and activities, sponsor booths and prizes and a celebration to all of our dedicated volunteers. These events will occur at Huntington State Beach and the Back Bay Science Center. The third location will be announced soon on Coastkeeper’s website. Attendance is free and supplies will be provided. However, Coastkeeper aspires to accomplish a low-waste event and asks that volunteers bring their own cleanup supplies including a bucket or reusable bag, gloves and reusable water bottle.
