Creating a pollinator-friendly habitat in your backyard Pollinators such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, bats and beetles play an important role in producing healthy plants and food for people and wildlife. Without pollinators feeding on nectar and moving pollen from one flower to the next, most plants would not produce fruit or seeds. You can attract pollinators to your lawn and garden by following these
steps to create a pollinator-friendly backyard habitat. * Grow a diverse assortment of trees, shrubs and flowers. Place water sources throughout your lawn and garden to draw a variety of pollinators to your yard, while providing them with food and sheltered nesting areas. * Add color to your backyard. Each
pollinator is drawn to specific plants based on its size, shape, color and scent. Bees are attracted to yellow and blue flowers, as well as fruit and nut trees with strong fragrances. Hummingbirds prefer large red or orange tubular flowers with no odor. * Select flowering plants that bloom at different times to provide nectar sources throughout the growing
season. Place plants in clumps to supply large areas of color and coverage that attracts pollinators. * Choose plants native to your area to encourage healthy pollination activity. In the South, flowers from mint, oregano, lavender and other herbs attract bees, while pink azaleas and coral honeysuckle vines entice hummingbirds into your yard. In the Northwest, birds are drawn to flowering grape holly shrub and blue columbine flowers will draw butterflies into your outdoor space. Pay attention to how you apply lawn and garden products. “When using insecticides, carefully read and follow label directions to protect pollinators,” says Aaron Hobbs, president of RISE (Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment) a national organization representing the manufacturers, formulators and distributors of pesticide and fertilizer products. Pollinators are as essential as sunlight and water in the production of flowering plants, many of which are important food sources. Support your backyard ecosystem while attracting pollinator populations and surrounding your home with colorful arrays of native plants.
EPA wrong to reduce public notices, news organizations say The Newport News joined CNPA and 42 news organizations and the Public Notice Resource Center to offer comments on the Environmental Protection Agency’s intention to reduce the public notice it provides in connection with most Clean Air Act actions. The EPA’s intent is to eliminate the requirement that the notices run in local newspapers near the potential sources of pollution EPA is planning to approve. The EPA based its proposal on the mistaken assumption that citizens affirmatively seek public notices and will regularly visit its website to learn about its plans, the PNRC noted. The comments also emphasize that for over 200 years, lawmakers have required public notices to be published in newspapers because they offer the best opportunity to reach local, civically engaged readers who are most likely to have a personal interest in the plans and activities described in the notices. “If EPA moves forward with this proposal, it will increase the likelihood that the people who stand to feel the greatest impact from its decisions will be left in the dark until it’s too late,” said Bradley L. Thompson II, Page 4
president of PNRC. “The Agency’s determination to inform citizens about its plans by posting notices in obscure corners of its website isn’t sufficiently transparent. It is especially unfortunate when pollsters tell us people are suspicious of Washington.
The Newport News
Keeping these notices local in places where readers will find them is a good way to combat public cynicism.” PNRC is a nonprofit organization that provides research and public education materials on the use of public notice in newspapers. It is
supported by contributions from newspaper organizations throughout the U.S., including CNPA. Elsewhere: Public notices from CNPA-member newspapers are aggregated and searchable at CaPublicNotice.com.

Freshwater Fishing in Southern California San Diego has something for everyone from sight seeing to camping. Even fishermen and women can enjoy San Diego with over twenty lakes and reservoirs as well as ocean piers, almost every type of fish can be caught. This article offers five of the more well known lakes around San Diego County. Two excellent and well thought out web sites to help the fisherman find out where they really want to go and what to expect during their trip are www.sdfish.com and www.californiafishingonline.com. So grab the rod and tackle, wrangle up the bait and let’s explore five of San Diego’s highest rated fishing destinations: Lake Dixon: Located up in Escondido with seventy acres of fishing. This lake is open year around and offers night fishing during the summer months. The fees range from $3 to $5 and offers shore fishing. Boat rentals are available as well as a bait shop on the premises. Lake El Capitan aka El Capitan Reservoir: Over fifteen hundred acres of fishing and picnicking. The lake is open Friday through Sunday and offers twenty-two miles of shoreline along with a maximum water depth of one hundred ninety-seven. There are no concession stands available, but there are vending machines. The staff of El Capitan sells bait and fishing licenses and a day use permit is sold at the entrance. Lake Hodges: Located in Del Mar with over twelve hundred acres. This lake offers boat rentals as well as allowing use of private boats with only paying a small launch fee. There are no concession stands available and the staff handles the permit purchase at the docks available.
Lower Otay Lake: Down in the South Bay location of San Diego, this lake gives the fisherman over twelve hundred acres of fishing, both from the shore and by boat. The lake has a concession stand located in the picnic grounds. This is one of the few lakes that allow dogs (leashed) to enjoy a day with their family as long they are kept fifty feet away from the water. Boat rentals and permits are sold be the lake staff. If wishing to use a private boat, the lake does charge a launch fee. Lake Miramar: This lake is open ten months a year (only closed in October and November). With one hundred and sixty-two acres, shore fishing and boat fishing abound. Boat rentals are available on the weekends only and private boats are welcome at any time. The concession stand sells permit and bait (including tackle) and also sells basic items. There are barbeque sites available in the picnic area. All of these lakes are stocked with a variety of fish including but not limited to large mouth bass, rainbow trout, catfish and crappie. Each site does have a limit to the amount of fish that can be caught and each are clearly listed where the permits are sold. Irvine Lake Irvine Lake is a reservoir in Orange
County, California, United States. The lake is on Santiago Creek, located in Silverado, California, east of the city of Irvine and close to Irvine Regional Park. The lake is formed by the Santiago Dam at the lake’s north end, which was built between 1929 and 1931, and the lake was originally called the Santiago Reservoir. The dam was built by the Irvine Company (the private developers of the city of Irvine) and the Serrano Irrigation District (now called the Serrano Water District); it is now administered jointly by the Serrano Water District and the Irvine Ranch Water District. The lake provides drinking water to Villa Park and some parts of Orange, and provides supplementary irrigation water to neighbouring ranches. Access to the lake is via Santiago Canyon Road, the road leading from Orange to Silverado. The Cleveland National Forest is on the northeast side of the lake. Stocked with largemouth bass, catfish, trout and crappie, the lake fishery opened to the public in 1941. The land around the lake is owned by the Irvine Company, which leases the fishing, boating, and camping concessions to SWD Recreation Inc.

Lake Shasta Fishing and Vacation Information By Kimberly Sharpe Lake Shasta, nestled beside the snow-capped Mount Shasta in northern California, spans 29,500 acres and boasts 370 miles of shoreline. The lake has diverse fishing opportunities with abundant rainbow trout, brown trout, crappie, kokanee salmon, king salmon, catfish, sturgeon, bluegill, spotted bass, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Considered a true fishermen’s mecca, the lake offers boat fishing and shoreline fishing choices. The largest man-made lake in California, Lake Shasta has a maximum fishing depth of 512 feet. Construction of the lake was completed in 1945 and the lake was officially filled in 1948. Four rivers, known as arms, empty into the lake. The McCloud river, Squaw creek, Sacramento river and Pit river flow into the lake and create its unique large arms which gives Lake Shasta its irregular shoreline appearance. Innumerable mountain streams and spring runoff sites also empty into the lake. Marinas and Boat Launches Lake Shasta’s shoreline is dotted with 11 marinas. Each one offers boat docking and tackle supplies for
anglers. Around the lake fishermen will find seven public boat launches. There is a minimal fee charged to launch a boat from any of the ramps. The ever changing seasonal water level of the lake dictates which boat launches will be open. If the water level is low a few launches may be closed. The Shasta Lake Visitor Information Centers monitor and provide boaters with current boat launch information. Each boat launch features ample parking for vehicles and boat trailers. Courtesy docks are available at the boat launch site to load gear and passengers into the boat. Fishing Locations Fishermen tend to congregate around the area of the arms that empty into the lake to catch fish. The McCloud river arm draws fishermen wishing to catch brown trout, according to the California Game & Fish. The fish spawn in the McCloud river in the fall and begin to enter Shasta lake using the river’s inlet during November and December when their spawning cycle is complete. The Jones Valley provides easy fishing access with paved roads to the Pit river arm where fishermen congre-
gate to catch rainbow trout. The area features beach side camping locations, a full service campground and a public boat launch. Planted Fish Every year the California Department of Fish and Game plants over 30,000 rainbow trout into Lake Shasta. Many of the marinas around the lake also raise rainbow trout in underwater cages until they reach magnum size before releasing them into the lake. Native rainbow trout can be found congreting near the mountain streams that drain into the lake and beside the arms where
they breed. Shore Fishing The Lake Shasta area offers shoreline fishing locations. Along the Sacramento Arm, off Lancaster Drive, fishermen will find easy access to simply walk down to the shore and cast a line. The upper portions of the McCloud arm are also readily accessible on foot with trails that lead down to the shore side. Winter months offer an ideal time for shoreline trout fishing because the fish rise up along the waters surface beside the shoreline in search of food.

Environmental Nature Center Nature Preschool Project Matching Gift Deadline Approaches
The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) Nature Preschool Campaign has an important deadline looming. A year ago an anonymous donor pledged to match any donations the Center receives toward the Preschool Campaign dollar for dollar, up to $3 million. The deadline for that matching opportunity is close at hand – April 4, 2016. “This generous donation has helped us reach $6,264,230 of our $10 million goal,” said ENC Executive Director Bo Glover. “We have one month left to take advantage of the matching opportunity by raising the final $2.2 million. Donations made this month will accelerate the timeline to making our Nature Preschool a reality.” Once the ENC’s fundraising efforts reach the nine million mark, the ENC will begin building the community’s first nature preschool and nature play area on the adjoining 1.3 acre property at 745 Dover Drive. As proven in countries such as Germany and
Finland as well as over 20 communities in the U.S., Nature Preschools teach the building blocks of a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) education through providing young children the opportunity to become familiar with the natural world by playing – and learning – while surrounded by nature. The school will also engage parents in active learning, serve as a model nature preschool, and provide a research forum on early childhood and environmental education. The ENC’s Nature Pre-school will have play areas but no playgrounds. Students will spend the majority of the day outdoors, where they will have ample time for unfacilitated nature experiences. Qualified early childhood educators and environmental educators will teach them the basics of a typical preschool and more. Indoor spaces will be warm, welcoming and conducive to learning. All construction on the new Nature Preschool will meet or exceed the sustainable building guidelines incorporated into the ENC’s existing LEED Platinum certified facility. It is the ENC’s goal to achieve certification through the Living Building Challenge. “I truly believe that this Nature Preschool and Nature Play Area will be an integral addition to the community making an essential impact on the next generation.” said Rick John, long-time Newport Beach resident and ENC Board Member. “We do not want to let this generous matching $2.2 million dollars slip away so we are urgently seeking community members to join us in supporting the
ENC Nature Preschool.” For more information or to donate to the ENC’s Nature Preschool, visit encnaturepreschool.org or contact ENC Development Director Maria Zalesky at 949-645-8489 ext. 118 or maria@encenter.org. About the ENC Founded in 1972, the ENC is a fascinating combination of 15 California native plant communities, wildlife habitat, walking trails, and sustainably designed, LEED Platinum certified learning center. For over 40 years, the ENC has been shaped and caressed into a 5-acre landscape for learning, a sanctuary from life’s pressures and a place of preservation and instruction. Serving over 22,000 students and thousands of visitors annually, the ENC is recognized as a leader in science and social science education providing opportunities for increasing our community’s knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the natural world. The ENC recently purchased property to develop a nature play area, and construct our community’s first nature based preschool. With a mission of providing quality education through hands-on experience with nature, the ENC inspires all generations to protect the natural world by serving as our community’s foremost authority on ecological responsibility, sustainable practices and environmental education. The ENC is a nonprofit 501(c)-3 public benefit corporation. For more information call 949-645-8489, or visit www. ENCenter.org. The ENC is located at 1601 16th St. in Newport Beach.

The Wait is Over! Disney’s NEWSIES Makes Its Long Anticipated Costa Me sa Premiere Disney’s NEWSIES will play an exclusive two-week premiere engagement at Segerstrom Center for the Arts with performances May 17 - 29, 2016 in Segerstrom Hall. Individual tickets for NEWSIES start at $25 and may be purchased online at SCFTA.org, the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. For inquiries about group tickets for 10 or more, call the Group Services office at (714) 755-0236. The 2 p.m. performance on Saturday, May 28, 2016 will include audio description, open captioning and sign-language interpretation. ABOUT NEWSIES NEWSIES, the new American musical, features a Tony® Awardwinning score with music by eighttime Academy Award® winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, a book by four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein and is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, NEWSIES is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli, who won a 2012 Tony Award® for his work. The entire creative team has reunited to bring the break-out smash musical to audiences across North America. When it opened on March 29, 2012 NEWSIES was intended for a Broadway run of just 101 performances. The show’s fiercely devoted fans had other ideas, however; they propelled the show to a run of 1,005 performances, attendance of more than 1 million and a gross of over $100M. While on Broadway, NEWSIES set and broke seven Nederlander Theatre house records and became the highest-grossing show from the 2011-12 Broadway season. The show received 23 major theatrical nominations – including eight Tony Award nods – and won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Score and Choreography. Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged
band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. NEWSIES is inspired by the reallife ‘Newsboy Strike of 1899,’ when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. The stage version introduces seven brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman, including a song written specifically for the tour called ‘Letter from the Refuge,’ while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’ Since the film’s 1992 theatrical release and subsequent DVD release, NEWSIES has grown into
a cult phenomenon, and for years had been the single most requested title of all the Disney musical films not yet adapted for the stage. (The film featured a screenplay by Bob Tzudiker & Noni White (Tarzan, 102 Dalmatians). For more information, visit NewsiesTheMusical.com, Facebook. com/Newsies and Twitter.com/ Newsies. The Costa Mesa engagement of NEWSIES is presented by arrangement with Segerstrom Center for the Arts and is a subscription offering of the Broadway and Curtain Call Series. Segerstrom Center for the Arts applauds Kia, Official Automotive Partner of the Center, and United Airlines, Official Airline of the Center. Time Warner is the Media Partner of the Broadway and Curtain Call Series. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is an acclaimed arts institution as well as a beautiful multi-disciplinary cultural campus. It is committed to supporting artistic excellence on all of its stages, offering unsurpassed experiences, and to engaging the entire community in new and exciting ways through the unique power of live performance and a diverse array of inspiring programs. Previously called the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Segerstrom Center is Orange County’s largest non-profit arts organization. PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated
(approved) The Newport News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people
of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising.

Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona Del Mar and Newport Coast? Power Up Throughout the Day with Protein As the building blocks of life, your body requires protein to function properly. But protein is also an important nutrient for those who wish to stay satisfied and full throughout their busy days. Why protein is essential A vital part of every diet, proteins are made up of a chain of amino acids which work to repair damaged cells and create new ones. According to the National Institutes of Health, the right amount of protein can be found in a well-balanced, complete diet. While sources of protein are often found in meats, eggs and fish, they can also be found in a variety of plant-based foods, such as soy, nuts and certain grains. As the average American’s schedule grows busier by the minute, it’s important to know the many convenient sources of protein available. Fuel the day A successful day at work requires the focus and energy from a complete, balanced diet, including the addition of protein sources when possible. Try these tips and meal ideas for filling your morning and afternoon meals with smarter, more powerful food picks: • Breakfast. Check one item – having a wholesome morning meal – off your list of things to do each and every day. Perfect for those rushed, on-the-go mornings, opt for a protein-packed smoothie. Available in many flavorful varieties, they’re easy to throw in your bag and enjoy as you commute. • Snack. A satisfying snack is one that will keep energy levels up and carry you over to your next meal. Some smart and satisfying options include Premier Protein 30g Bars and Fiber Bars. They are gluten-free and a good source of fiber, available
in a variety of flavors and offer up to 30 grams of protein per bar. Keep them on hand in your desk or computer bag so you’re always able to snack whenever hunger hits. For more satisfying snacks, visit www.premierprotein.com. • Lunch. Amp up the protein on your turkey sandwich by replacing mayo and mustard with hummus, and use high-protein bread instead of regular whole wheat. For salads, add sliced hard boiled eggs and chickpeas. For a sweet powerpacked side, try cottage cheese topped with sliced peaches or Greek yogurt topped with fresh blueberries.
