The 400-acre Banning Ranch is located in the west Newport Beach/Costa Mesa area at the end of 17th St. Developers are proposing a 895-home mega-development resulting in excessive noise, dust, pollution, run-off, traffic (15,000 cars/day) and an overall decrease in quality of life for west side residents. Find out how you can get involved and help preserve this open space and leave an amazing legacy for future generations. Alton Brown Makes a Stop at Segerstrom Center During New National Tour Eat Your Science May 13, 2016
Segerstrom Center for the Arts welcomes Television personality, author and Food Network star Alton Brown on his new national tour Alton Brown Live: Eat Your Science coming to Segerstrom Center for the Arts May 13, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. Brown’s first North American tour, Edible Inevitable was a huge success over two years and 100 cities with more than 150,000 fans in attendance. With Eat Your Science, fans can expect more comedy, talk show antics, multimedia presentations and music (yes, he sings), but Brown is adding a slew of fresh ingredients including new puppets, songs, bigger and potentially more dangerous experiments and what every cook needs in his kitchen: FIRE. Tickets start at $49 and may be purchased online at SCFTA.org, the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 5562787. For inquiries about group ticket savings for 10 or more, call the Group Services office at (714) 755-0236. The TTY number is (714) 556-2746. Critics and fans have raved about the interactive component where Brown invites audience members on stage to serve as his assistant. “There will be plenty of new therapy inducing opportunities during our audience participation segments. I don’t want
to give too much away, but we’re also going to play a little game with the audience,” says Brown. Brown has a knack for mixing together a perfect base of science, music and food into two hours of pure entertainment. “Plus, you’ll see things that I was never allowed to do on TV.” He also says larger and more protective ponchos will be provided to the first few rows as his experiments have the potential to get messy. Brown, author of the James Beard award winning I’m Just Here for the Food and New York Times bestselling sequence Good Eats, is releasing the first of two new cookbooks through Ballantine Books (an imprint of Random House) in the Fall of 2016. ALTON BROWN: EVERY DAY COOK, or EDC as Brown calls it, is a collection of more than 100 personal recipes as well as a pinch of science and history. He has hosted numerous series including Cutthroat Kitchen, Camp Cutthroat and Iron Chef America and created, produced and hosted the Peabody award winning series Good Eats for 13 years on Food Network; Good Eats can still Alton Brown be seen on the Cooking Channel and Netflix. Twitter: @altonbrown; Instagram: @ Alton Brown can find additional show Information about Alton Brown or altonbrown; or use the tour hashtag and ticketing information at www. the Eat Your Science tour can be #AltonBrownLive. altonbrownlive.com. found on Facebook: /altonbrown; Those with an appetite for more
Cook Up a Mother’s Day to Remember
Mother’s Day is a time for wining, dining and celebrating moms everywhere. Make this Mother’s Day one to remember by hosting a special brunch get-together for the special ladies in your life. Although quality time together is the true purpose of the day, you can add some special touches to help create a one-of-a-kind brunch to share old memories while you make new ones. Plan your tablescape. Colorful, fragrant flowers and luxurious linens make your everyday table shine. Use plates in complementing shades and sparkling glassware for an elegant touch. If you have room, add personal touches to the centerpiece, such as
Page 4
mementoes from shared trips or small picture frames with pictures of the two of you through the years. Prepare a sophisticated menu. Give a nod to the importance of the day with dishes that are a step above standard brunch fare. A richly flavored entree such as this Spring Vegetable and Chevre Tart looks elegant but is surprisingly easy to make. For a cohesive spread, remember to give the basics a boost, too, such as a homemade flavored whipped butter. Offer a gift with meaning. To truly elevate the occasion, serve (or gift) your mom with a deliciously meaningful wine, such as Cambria Benchbreak Chardonnay or Pinot Noir from the famed Santa Maria bench in Santa Barbara County. Cambria is a family-owned winery that believes in honoring women across the United States and globally. Each year, the winery gives $100,000 to women making a difference in their communities through their Seeds of Empowerment program. For more recipes and ideas to enhance your celebrations, visit cambriawines.com. 1 large beefsteak tomato, thinly sliced 8 ounces thin green beans 2 beets, thinly sliced 4 mini zucchinis, thinly sliced 1 egg white, beaten until slightly foamy Heat oven to 350 F. On well-greased baking sheet, arrange one puff pastry sheet. Crumble chevre across pastry. Lay tomato slices then green beans, zucchini and beets over chevre, leaving a 1-inch border around all edges. Crumble second half of chevre on top. Lightly wet edges of pastry. Slice four 1-inch strips of second sheet of pastry and lay over edges of bottom sheet. (Optional: create basketweave pattern with remaining pastry dough). Brush pastry with egg white and bake until pastry is deep golden brown, about 35 minutes. Serve immediately. Pinot Noir Rosemary Butter Recipe courtesy of Erin Kennedy of My Thirty Spot Blog 1 cup salted homemade whipped butter (recipe below) 3/4 cup Cambria Benchbreak Pinot Noir 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary Fill shallow saucepan with wine and simmer until consistency becomes syrupy (reducing to about 1/8 cup).
Let syrup cool completely. Add syrup and rosemary to whipped butter and mix. Serve chilled. Homemade Whipped Butter 1/2 quart heavy cream 1/2 teaspoon salt (up to 3/4 teaspoon, to taste) In food processor, mix butter until cream turns to consistency of cottage cheese and starts to separate from buttermilk, about 3-5 minutes of constant mixing. Strain butter from buttermilk. Use wooden spoon to knead butter in water (just like dough) to remove all remaining buttermilk. Drain and repeat until water is clear. Remaining whipped butter is ready to serve or for adding flavoring ingredients.

Feline Playtime Tips It’s important to keep your cat active by engaging them in playful activity a few times a day. Help your cat conquer playtime and stay active with these simple tips and toys from the folks at TEMPTATIONS Brand. It’s as easy as play, pounce and purr! • Rotating Toys: Don’t let your cat get bored with the same old playthings. Swap a rotation of toys in and out of the mix to keep your cat alert and entertained. • Cat vs. Mouse: Bring the age-old rivalry of cat vs. mouse to life with the new Temptations Snacky Mouse Toy – which makes playtime irresistible with an interactive bottom-weighted, mouse-shaped wobble toy designed to dispense delicious Temptations treats as cats bat, bobble and play with it.

FAMILY FEATURES
rom homemade childhood favorites that warm the heart to delectable desserts, no one works their magic in the kitchen quite like mom. When trying to decide what to get your favorite lady for Mother’s Day this year, look for gifts that allow her to channel her inner foodie, chef or baker. The best gifts are always those that keep on giving. Through Cook for the Cure, a 15-year partnership between KitchenAid and Susan G. Komen, more than $10.7 million has been raised for the fight against breast cancer. In 2016, KitchenAid will donate at least $450,000 to Komen through the program, regardless of sales. The Cook for the Cure product collection, ranging from pink stand mixers and polka dot bowls to pink food choppers, painted plates and hand mixers, is an easy way to give thanks to mom and raise awareness for a cause that benefits so many women. For other gift ideas that help support the cause, visit www.KitchenAid.com and http://CookfortheCure.KitchenAid.com.

Handy Little Helper
Whether you need to blend up a milkshake or puree cooked vegetables directly in the pot, this 2-Speed Hand Blender in Pink gets the job done with ease. Two speeds provide blending control for more delicate foods, such as smoothies and baby food. The blending arm twists off for quick and easy cleanup. This hand blender ($59.99) comes with a 3-cup BPA-free jar with lid, so mom can blend away, safely.
An Essential, Everyday Tool
If some of her best culinary creations include savory sauces, delightful dressings and delicious dips, Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to treat mom to an upgrade. This 3.5-cup Food Chopper in Pink is convenient for everyday use and takes up minimal space in the kitchen. With two one-touch speed settings for chop and puree, this chopper ($49.99) is ideal for creating a spicy salsa, creamy hummus or garden-fresh pesto.
Blending Style with Power
With its roomy, 60-ounce patented diamond pitcher design and stainless steel blades, the 5-Speed Diamond Blender in Cranberry creates a powerful vortex to thoroughly blend everything from soups to smoothies. Automatic Soft Start® technology pulls ingredients into the blade rather than splattering them outward, keeping them together for controlled blending. This colorful blender ($159.99) offers stir, chop, mix, puree, liquefy and pulse options – everything mom needs to create her favorite dishes.
Timeless Kitchen Addition Plated Perfection
Featuring artwork by PBS cooking show host Jacques Pepin, the Pass the Plate serving platter generates a $5 donation each time one of these individually numbered platters is passed and registered online. With its fresh and cheery design, this unique serving piece makes sharing even more fun. A great gift for mom, the platter ($24.95) is available at Villeroy & Boch stores or by calling 1-888886-8318.
Mix in Some Style
Turn Mom’s stand mixer into a standalone work of art this Mother’s Day with the new Pink Polka Dot ceramic bowl. This delightfully dappled 5-quart bowl ($99.99) is microwave, oven, freezer and dishwasher safe, and features a comfortable handle and easy pour spout – a perfect pick for all of mom’s mixing tasks.
Add a pop of pink to mom’s kitchen with a classic gift that will endure for years. With an elegant 5-quart capacity glass bowl, the Artisan Design® Series’ premium metallic Raspberry Ice finish adds radiance to any kitchen countertop. It can handle multiple batches of dough while its 10 speed settings allow cooks to knead, mix and whip a variety of foods and ingredients. With additional attachments that can make everything from pasta to ice cream to spiralized fruits and vegetables, this mixer ($459.99) helps mom take her culinary creativity to a whole new level.

National Charity League Juniors, Newport Beach Chapter Celebrates with a Fashion Fling! Photos by: Ann Chatillon The Newport Beach chapter of National Charity League, Juniors hosted
Co-Chair Wendy Blackband, Co-Chair Kristin Sheward, President Jennifer Middlemas, and Co-Chair Brooke Willems
its 30th annual mother-daughter luncheon and fashion show at the Balboa Bay Club and Resort. This year’s luncheon theme, “Fashion Fling,” proved once again that although fashions may change with the seasons, enthusiastic community support for outstanding organizations like National Charity League, Jrs. is never out of style. More than 430 guests stepped out for an afternoon of fun, food and fashion supporting NCL, Jrs. in raising nearly $80,000.00 this year in support of three local charities: High Hopes Head Injury Program, Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF) and the Harry and Grace Steele Children’s Center at Orange Coast College. The Balboa Bay Club’s entrance and ballroom was transformed in keeping with the theme “Fashion Fling” for the festive afternoon that honored the

out-going 6th-grade members and their mothers. The adults were served with a Cobb Salad with Bread and Cheesecake for dessert. The children enjoyed lemonade, cheeseburger sliders, French fries, fruit skewers and sundaes for dessert! During lunch, a wonderful silent auction was happening with plenty of items to choose from for both adults and the children. Two Adele tickets to her upcoming concert in October in the premier section with parking was up for grabs as well as four tickets to see Dave Matthews at the Irvine Verizon Wireless Theater. A vacation at the Four Seasons Punta Mita for 4 nights along with airfare, two lodge level tickets for the American Music Awards Show and round trip flight for 4 people from Orange County to Las Vegas on a Phenom 100 JetSuite were just some of the Adult items. The kids had their share to bid on with a Le Pain Quotidien Private Baking Class for up

to 12 kids for a fun birthday party, 4 Selena Gomez concert tickets at the Honda Center and more to them to choose from. Following lunch, models from Bloomingdale’s Fashion Island hit the runway. They modeled a variety of designers from Tory Burch, Alice and Olivia, DKNY, and Kate Spade. The lively show included plenty of highfives from the models passing by the lineup of attentive young girls in their traditional place along the runway. The Newport Beach Chapter of National Charity League, Juniors, is composed of women with daughters ranging from kindergarten through 6th grade. The purpose of NCL Jrs. is to initiate and promote charitable endeavors, and to foster mother-daughter relationships in philanthropic, cultural and social activities. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated

of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Mother ’s Day Proclamation 1870
by Mary Langenback Every one of us has had or has a mother or step mother, at some point in our lives. Mothers day has been celebrated since the early 1900’s. Although my own mother has passed away and I have no children of my own, I still remember her wonderful influence on my life. In celebration of mother’s day I wanted to learn about the history of mother’s day and was surprised to find out that it was originally a woman’s reaction to war. Julia Ward Howe, herself influenced by a one Anna Jarvis who sought to improve sanitation through “Mother’s Work days” in the mid 1850’s. So originally Mother’s day was a day for Mothers to work to improve the lives of those around them. Julia Ward Howe, who lived through the Civil War, saw it as the only way to attempt to stop men from warring with each other. Call it what you will, but her idea was a day of peace. In 1870 she gave a proclamation (Read in full at: http://womenshistory.about.com/ od/howejwriting/a/mothers_day.htm) for women to take counsel together after mourning their dead and to make an attempt to influence those around them, especially their family members, to do all they can to stop war and live at peace with their brothers and sisters around the globe. It was to be remembered that war has many other side effects than just the funerals during and afterward. There was an emotional effect upon women all over the world, crying for their dead, some who had depended upon those men for support, in societies that do not allow women to work. Some of these women with no men to depend on must get married to men they don’t like, or go into prostitution for survival. The effect also was (and is) economic, men in the 1800’s were the primary bread winners even here in America. Mothers day was first celebrated in a small church, the church in Virginia where Anna Jarvis’ daughter Page 16
attended. Soon this holiday spread to most of the other 48 continental states. By 1920 it had been celebrated as a national holiday. Slowly, but surely we have stripped it of its original meaning, and have continued to war against ourselves (even our own family members and neighbors) and those of other countries. Even now we are at war in several places in the middle east. Our sons, and husbands, and fathers and lovers have gone off to war and this month we are going to sit at home with those who have stayed behind and celebrate the fact that we, or our relatives and friends, are mothers. Some husbands and families will cry (inside at least), because now there are some mothers at war. We have come a long, long way and it is so very, very sad to say where we have ended up. We celebrate, adore, worship, and congratulate the mothers, the first time mothers, the oldest mother’s, the youngest mothers and the mothers with the most children. This is not how Mother’s day was supposed to be celebrated. As I said earlier, the original Mothers day was “celebrated” by mothers going out and caring about the health and sanitation of their communities. So, this Mother’s day when you are buying her gifts and taking her out to dinner, take a long, long look at her. Think of what the world would be without our mothers, without our mother’s love and teaching. Think about what femininity meant to society in the past. It meant a caregiver in the family, a teacher, a spiritual leader, one who would (ideally) teach about peace and brotherhood. Then, talk together, after the younger kids have gone to bed, about how mothers, fathers and possibly what your family can do this next year to influence others to stop war. Lets get back to Julia Ward Howe’s original plea: Disarm! Disarm! or even the 1960’s motto: “Make love, not war”!
