Laguna Dance Festival: contemporary cool from coast to coast The September 21-25 Laguna Dance Festival will bring to the intimate stage three world-renowned dance companies, New York-based Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion, Philadelphia’s BalletX and Los Angeles’ BODYTRAFFIC, audience talks with the directors, free public performances, and four master classes. Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion will perform on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at The Laguna Playhouse. Both performances will be followed by a post-performance conversation with Kyle Abraham, 2013 MacArthur “genius grant” winner. Abraham’s thought-provoking “Pavement,” called “a work of great subtlety and beauty” by The New Yorker, is a meditation on the 1991 film Boyz N The Hood as well as W.E.B. DuBois’ 1903 book The Souls of Black Folk. With his full-length, 55-minute piece, Abraham examines the history that led to the conflict represented in the movie, and finds relevance in the Du Bois essays, which were influential in AfricanAmericans’ struggle for equality in the twentieth century. The dance is set on a basketball court in the historically black Pittsburgh neighborhoods where Abraham grew up, and the eclectic soundtrack includes 23 names, from Baroque selections by Bach and Vivaldi to Sam Cooke vocals and rap. Washington Post reviewer Sarah Kaufman wrote, “Beautiful and severely honest..(but)

despite its name and subject matter, ‘Pavement’ is not all hard edges. It delivers a sharp sense of reality with extraordinary softness, in dancing that is lush and seductive.” With the company’s performances described as “solid from beginning to end” (New York Amsterdam News) and “effortless-seeming smoothness and grace” (Los Angeles Times), A.I.M.’s premiére performance in Orange County is certain to garner attention and initiate conversation. BalletX will return to the Laguna Beach stage to present its entertaining, diverse choreographic style in a shared bill with BODYTRAFFIC on Saturday, Sept. 24 and a full-length show on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 3 p.m. with a pre-show talk at 2 p.m. Committed to producing new works that cultivate in audiences a collective appetite for bold, new dance, BalletX was founded in 2005 by Christine Cox and Matthew Neenan. Now under the direction of Cox as artistic and executive director, BalletX challenges the boundaries of classical ballet by encouraging formal experimentation while preserving rigorous technique. BalletX’s dances “have suspense, vitality, comedy, freedom,” according to the New York Times. The company “…creates a coherent, poetic realm of the imagination.” Its performances are “a feast of music and dance,” noted the Philadelphia Inquirer, and “remarkably moving.” BODYTRAFFIC, a Laguna Dance Festival audience favorite, will head down the freeway from Los Angeles for

a Saturday, Sept. 24 performance at 7:30 p.m. in a combined program with BalletX. In addition, BODYTRAFFIC dancers will present a master class at Laguna Beach High School at 10 a.m. the same day. Founded in 2007 by Lillian Barbeito and Tina Finkelman Berkett, the company has surged to the forefront of the concert dance world and is helping to establish Los Angeles as a major center for contemporary dance. “BODYTRAFFIC suggests invention, attitude, and urban edge,” wrote Karen Campbell in the Boston Globe. In the Los Angeles Times, Laura Bleiberg called it “one of the most talked-about young companies, not just in L.A. but nationwide.” Festival founder and artistic director Jodie Gates commented, “The companies selected for this fall’s festival hail from three uniquely American cities – Kyle Abraham from New York by way of his

hometown of Pittsburgh, BalletX out of Philadelphia, and BODYTRAFFIC from Los Angeles. Presented over four days, these companies offer audiences a dazzling representation of the current freshness, depth, and breadth of contemporary American dance.” The four onstage performances by these three extraordinary companies will be presented at the 420-seat Laguna Playhouse, 606 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach. Ticket prices are: general admission $60, students with ID $35. The three master classes will be held at two locations. Master class costs are $25 per student; $15 observer; student package of a master class and performance: $50. Update Aug. 30: All master classes are sold out. Performance tickets are on sale now at the Laguna Playhouse box office and at www.lagunadancefestival.org.

Exhibition Through December 4, 2016. Brian Bress: Make Your Own Friends offers an in-depth look at the last ten years of Bress’s practice. Bringing together his video, sculpture and works on paper for the first time, the exhibition is the most significant presentation of the L.A. artist’s work to date. Bress is known for the fictional characters he creates, inspired by 1980s children’s programming, exotic world cultures and historical art movements. Born as doodles or collages, these imaginative figures take shape as sculptural costumes and come to life on video, performed

in front of elaborately composed backdrops. it is that time of year again. How to Play Fantasy Football Once relegated only to the nerds and stat geeks, fantasy football has become a mainstream hobby enjoyed each season by nearly 30 million U.S. adults and is widely credited with the country’s increased interest in the NFL. It has become just as common to hear people talk about their fantasy football teams at family gatherings and at the office as it is to hear them talk about the weather. The game has given new meaning to Sunday football and has added a fun twist to the NFL season. The basic concept behind fantasy football is to assemble a virtual team of real NFL players. You are the “owner” or “manager” of your team and compete in a league generally comprised of between 8 and 16 teams although 10 - 12 teams is most common. The other “owners” can be friends, family, co-workers, or complete strangers. Fantasy points are accumulated based upon the actual statistics of the players on your team. You compete each week against someone else in your league and the person who has the most fantasy points at the end of the week is the winner for that week. The teams with the best records at the end of the fantasy season make it to the playoffs and eventually the top two face each other in the Super Bowl (generally Week 16 of the NFL season). Draft Your Team Perhaps the most fun time of the season is Draft Day. This is the day that everyone picks the players for their team. The goal is to select the players that you think will be the most productive over the course of the season. In standard leagues, teams are comprised of 1 quarterback (QB), 2 running backs (RB), 3 wide receivers (WR), 1 tight-end (TE), 1 kicker (K), and 1 defense/special teams (DST). Owners take turns picking NFL players and an NFL player can only be on 1 team at a time. For example, if you have the first pick and take Adrian Peterson from Minnesota with that pick, nobody else can have him. Drafting a solid team is imperative to winning a league. Never go into your draft without preparing yourself with player projections and rankings. Virtually every league management program (CBSSports.com, NFL. com, ESPN.com) has some sort of rankings built in, but you can also check out fantasy football rankings from sites like Fantasy Football Nerd and FF Toolbox. In addition to your starting lineup, you will draft anywhere from 7 to 15 additional players. These players are referred to as your “bench”. During the season you can replace your starting lineup with one of your

bench players depending on match up or injury. If this is your first year playing the game and you want to win, the best advice is to avoid the newbie pitfall of drafting players from your favorite team well before anyone else would have. Use the rankings and projections from your research or your league’s software to help you make informed drafting decisions. Taking a kicker from your favorite team with your first pick might guarantee you the opportunity to cheer for him all season long but it seriously reduces your chances of winning games. Scoring Systems In order to draft well, you will need to know your league’s scoring system. Most leagues will have standard scoring (below), but some have extra twists. You may hear the acronym “PPR” which stands for “point per reception”. In PPR leagues, players earn a point for every catch. You may also hear the term “bonus points”. This refers to extra points given to players when they achieve certain thresholds. For example, Drew Brees might earn you an additional 5 points if he throws for 300 or more yards in a game. Most standard scoring leagues award points for the following: * 1 point for every 10 rushing yards * 1 point for every 10 receiving yards * 1 point for every 25 passing yards * 6 points for every rushing/ receiving TD * 4 points for every passing TD * 1 point for every extra point kicked successfully * 3 points for every field goal kicked successfully * 1 point for every reception (PPR leagues only) Playing The Game Now that you have drafted a team of players, your league will create your schedule of match ups for the season. Each week you will compete against someone else where the two of you will attempt to “start” the best performing team. For example, if you drafted 3 quarterbacks and your league requires you to start 1, you need to decide each week which of those 3 QB’s will be starting and which 2 will remain on your bench. Bench players do not accumulate points for your team so your job is to determine who has the best chance of putting up the best stats. This may seem easy enough, but once the season is underway and injuries and on-field match ups become factors, the “sit/start” decisions can truly be difficult. If you’ve been paying attention to the season, some of these choices may force you to question

yourself and flip-flop back and forth right up until kickoff. Making the right decision is incredibly rewarding, particularly if it results in a win for you that week! Looking for help with your weekly lineup decisions? You won’t have to look far. There are literally thousands of websites from which to choose for fantasy football advice, rankings, projections, news, and more. Every major league platform has rankings to help you. Some sites like FantasyFootballNerd.com aggregate fantasy football rankings from multiple sources and combine them into one easy to use consensus. NFL Network and ESPN have dedicated fantasy football TV shows. You can find free pod casts from thousands of independent sites. Check the newsstand for magazines. The library will have fantasy football books. Sirius/XM Radio even has a dedicated channel for fantasy sports. It won’t be hard to find a plethora of advice and options. Trades and Waiver Wire Injuries (both temporary and longlasting) are a near certainty in the NFL. When you combine injuries with the fact that not all of your players will live up to your expectations and other players who perform well above their low/no expectations (commonly referred to as “sleepers”), there is a very high chance that the team you have at the end of the year will not be the same team that you drafted. As an owner, you will want to upgrade your team when and where you can. As an example, let’s imagine that you have 3 good quarterbacks and 2 average/below-average tight ends. Another owner in your league has poorly performing quarterbacks and 2 great/good tight ends. In this scenario, it would be a good idea to propose a trade of one of your quarterbacks

for one of his/her tight ends. Trades are one way to upgrade your team. The most common place to look for upgrades will be the waiver wire which is simply the term given to players who are not owned by anyone else. You can “pick up” one of these players at anytime during the season but you will be required to “drop” one of your existing players. If for example one of your running backs sustains a season-ending injury, it is no longer in your best interest to keep him on your team as he will no longer be playing. You can drop that player onto the waiver wire and pick up a replacement. This also can be done for players who have not lived up to expectations, particularly if there are better players available on the wire. Check your league for the rules on the waiver wire order. When the waiver wire opens up each week, some leagues have rules indicating who gets to pick and in what order. If two or more owners are all trying to get the same player, the waiver wire order determines which owner can lay claim to that player. Commissioner The commish job is perhaps the most under-appreciated job in the league but someone has to be in charge. The commish determines the rules of the league, organizes the draft date/time, and serves as mediator in all disputes within the league. If your league is playing for money, the commish is usually responsible for holding onto the money and handling the payouts at the end of the season. The best way to learn to play the game is to jump right in. Grab a bunch of your friends and family or join a free public league. Once you’ve mastered the basics you will never watch an NFL game the same way again!

Segerstrom Center for the Arts Kicks off Season with Tour de Force III Yvette Pergola with Maxim Zyuzin and Dorcas Preston

Photos by Doug Gifford Segerstrom Center for the Arts kicked off its 30th anniversary celebrations with a spectacular evening a dance: Tour de Force III. Dance has been the Center’s artistic signature since opening night, September 29, 1986. The annual Dance Series has brought international recognition to the Center and Orange County with nearly every major dance and ballet company in the world coming to Orange County via the Center. Tour de Force III was a one-night-only extravaganza – just four pieces, but each one a West Coast premiere. Undoubtedly, and with all respects to the other dancers and choreographers, the big news was the West Coast debut of current leading of all leading male dancers, Sergei Polunin. Due to visa problems with another lead dancer, a work had to be replaced. Substituted was a peek at part of dramatic new work titled Silent Echoes, being created by Russell Maliphant for Natalia Osipova and Polunin and that will have its full world premiere in New York later this year. Was it a coup d’théâtre? It was for Segerstrom Center! Osipova is arguably the leading ballerina dancing today. She has appeared at the Elizabeth Segerstrom and Betty Kay Fukunaga and Marcelo Center many times for Orange County’s balletomanes, and she was glorious. Huang Gomes Polunin is undeniably a superstar, often said to be the new Rudolph Nureyev. Ballet is not followed as closely in the United States as in Europe. So in the ballet world and Europe, Polunin is a rock star. He did not disappoint, and it was, indeed, a spectacular, historic evening of glorious dance with which to celebrate Segerstrom Center’s dance. After the final curtain, the cast – including Osipova and Polunin, Viktoria Briyova of the Mariinsky Ballet, ABT’s great Marcelo Gomes, who, with Joaquin de Luz, Denis Matvienko and Friedemann Vogel, performed his own work, Tristesse, and Philipp Stepin and Soslan Kulaev – attended the postperformance party at Mastro’s. W i l l S i m p s o n a nd T h e D u d e a r e D y n a m i t e i n t h e M a r k e l In s u r a n c e 1 . 4 0 m G r a nd P r i x Mavis Spencer and Disco Lady Top the Interactive Mortgage U25 The $25,000 Markel Insurance 1.40m Grand Prix in Del Mar was truly tremendous sport. Some superb horse and rider pairs came to compete, 52 in total, with veteran pair Will Simpson and The Dude (Nicole Walker, owner) taking the win in a 14 horse jump-off. Californian native Mavis Spencer rode Disco Lady (owned by Neil Jones Equestrian) to the win in the Interactive Mortgage U25 qualifier. Having lived and worked in Europe for several years and on the East Coast for a few years as well, Spencer hasn’t competed in California since 2008. The popularity of this class as a way to move young grand prix horses up, a chance for U25 riders to compete with veteran show jumpers and a warm-up for many of those competing in the weekend grand prix, also makes it a challenge for the course designer. With a large group of entries varying in experience, the track needs to be both inviting and technical. FEI Course Designer Catsy Cruz (MEX) explained her strategy. “It offers a little bit of everything - I tried to use the material, to use the ring, and used specific questions to try to make it interesting and make it a challenging class.” Asking horses to stretch in longer lines and also shorten, plus using a skinny vertical early in the course, a liverpool, combinations, planks as well as a tight time allowed, Cruz created a track that demanded a plan. “It’s all related, you have to ride with rhythm and in coordination with your horse. The speed as posted for the class is a much more ‘going forward’ speed. So if you don’t keep

on the rhythm, then time is a factor, too. Hopefully we’ll have a good class with about ten or so clean.” The first of the 14 horse and rider combinations to jump-off set quite a precedent: Mavis Spencer and her horse Cornetiero flew through the shortened course in a fault-free time of 40.71 that was not able to be caught by the following 11 horses. Spencer’s effort held the lead through four double-clear trips, including Nicole Haunert riding NJK No Regret, Laura Hite on Solos Consept, Christian Heineking aboard AJE Cluny, and Tina Yates on Highpoint Farm, LLC’s Bowmore VDL. Thirteenth to jump off, Will Simpson strode into the ring on Nicole Walker’s The Dude. Simpson’s bold decisions, in conjunction with The Dude’s large stride and impressive scope, enabled him to perfect a hairpin turn back to fence 6B while still maintaining his prompt pace. “He laid down a real tight turn [to fence 6B] and then jumped across the plank [7], and he was already headed towards the next jump. We really took a risk there but he was still a foot and half over the jump. So he was just incredible. He’s ten years old and really coming into his own,” Simpson said of The Dude. Simpson’s eye was at work immediately after landing from fence 9 - he chose a big stride for a big distance into the combination. His confidence placed The Dude in a strong position for the oxer at the A element, but required some careful backing up at the B element. Like Simpson said, though, The Dude “came to play today in Del Mar.” The pair whizzed through the timers in unbeatable 38.92.

Think outside the lunch box to make school lunches they’ll love

Many parents prefer packing their kids’ school lunches for a number of reasons, from cost savings to the confidence of having better control over what their children eat. But packing the same-old, same-old every day can get tired fast - for both parent and child. By adding a dollop of creativity to packed lunches, parents can ensure they serve something kids will enjoy throughout the school year. “Packed lunches are a great option

for families that want to emphasize positive eating habits while controlling costs,” says Lorraine Hale, category director of new Sara Lee Snack Cakes. “Any parent can tell you, however, that it can be a challenge to come up with five different menus every week throughout the school year. Kids are much more likely to eat a lunch that offers a variety of fun and balanced options!” Here are some ideas for creating appealing, balanced lunches parents will feel good about and kids will want to eat: * Beverages - Replace sugar-filled regular soda and fruit juices with healthier beverages. Water is simply the best calorie-free, high-hydration beverage, so use it in place of sports drinks or even diet soda. Flavored waters can tickle the taste buds of the pickiest drinkers, without adding calories or sugar. And never pack so-called “energy drinks” in a child’s lunch; many are high in sugar and caffeine, and some school districts

have banned them altogether. * Sandwich bread - There are so many great choices for sandwich making, and whole wheat bread can be part of a nutritious lunch. Get creative incorporating whole grain into your child’s lunch, including breads made from different types of whole grains like oats and barley. * Sides - Sure, you would love it if your kids munched on fresh cut veggies at lunchtime, but it’s the rare child that has such a refined palate. Most kids would prefer a bag of chips. Want to combine both competing desires? Veggie chips can be a fun, yummy occasional side that kids love. Veggie chips take the chip concept to the next level with enticing colors and flavors, and the crunch that kids love. As a bonus, the chips can be a great way to introduce kids to new vegetables they might not otherwise try like yucca, parsnips and turnips. * There’s room for dessert - in moderation, like everything else - and

a little something sweet can help kids get through the day, either as a sweet ending to lunch or an afternoon snack during the homework crunch. Individually wrapped options like new freshly baked Sara Lee Snack Cakes, from the iconic American brand, make it easy to give kids a perfectly portioned pat on the back for their hard work throughout the school day. Each box of Devil’s Food Crème Cakes, Golden Fudge Cakes and Crumb Cakes contains six or eight individually wrapped cakes, making them easy to include in packed lunches. Visit www.Facebook.com/SaraLeeSnacks to learn more. Finally, think beyond the brown bag; insulated bags are reusable and available in appealing patterns and trendy colors and can help keep lunches at safe temperatures all morning. Be sure to wash out these reusable bags every day, and clean ice packs thoroughly before refreezing them. - (BPT)
