4 Tips for Staying Ahead of the Elements

Whether an outdoor concertgoer, sports fan or avid vacationer, Mother Nature can be harsh on your eyes, skin and hair regardless of the season. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect and rejuvenate your features so you can enjoy your favorite outdoor activities all year long. Be prepared for whatever the elements throw at you, and learn how to counteract weather-related wear and tear, with these smart self-care tips. Get From There to Hair Keep your hairdo healthy, rain or shine, by properly maintaining it with the right products at home. A regular hair-care routine that matches the unique needs of your hair will help ensure it is in peak condition to face any weather-related distress. Specialized shampoos, conditioners and hair styling products can lend a boost of hydration, calm frizzy strands or help control excess oil. When you venture out, take precautions such as tying long hair back or braiding it to prevent tangles. In addition, a hat can help tame your locks in case of

rain, snow or wind. Keep a Clear Eye on Weather Your eyes are particularly sensitive to changes in weather, and whether you’re dealing with irritated eyes at a summer cookout, itchy eyes during spring pollen season or dry eyes during the cold winter months, you need an eye care solution you can depend on. ROHTO Ice All-in-One Cooling eye drops contain a mix of fast-acting and highly effective ingredients that provide fast cooling relief for eight symptoms.

“People want a multi-symptom eye care solution that is as on-the-go as they are,” said Erick Estrada, director of marketing for the ROHTO brand, the No. 1 over-the-counter global eye drop brand. “ROHTO Ice All-in-One Cooling eye drops are a quick fix for anything Mother Nature throws your way.” Soothe and Smooth Your Skin Whether it’s hot summer sun or dry winter air, keeping your skin smooth requires special care and attention. Although it’s more likely

you’ll remember the sunblock when temps are blazing, you need plenty of sunblock during the winter months, too, especially if your activities involve highly reflective surfaces, such as snow. Avoid dry, scaly skin by regularly exfoliating and applying lotion just after you step out of the shower when pores are open and more readily soak up the moisture. Treat Your Feet Plan the proper footwear to protect your feet, whether that’s a trek through the woods, a trip along the beach or trudging through the snow. Adequate arch support and an overall good fit will help ensure your feet don’t take any harder hits than necessary. On the beach, opt for shoes that will transition well from walkways to sand to water. When a fuller coverage shoe or hiking boot is more the ticket, don’t overlook the importance of adding high-quality socks, which cannot only add cushion but also help wick away moisture. Newport Residents Honoring National Guide Dogs This September

Group of Guide dogs Have you ever seen a visually impaired person in public and didn’t know how to react, or felt awkward? Have you ever wondered what it’s like to ‘see’ through the eyes of their guide dog? This September, for National Guide Dog Month, Natural Balance, the maker of premium-quality pet food and Guide Dogs for the Blind, a national non-profit that trains exceptional guide dogs to serve the blind or visually impaired are partnering up to spread awareness about the incredible bond between visually-impaired ‘handlers’ and their guide dogs. National Guide Dog Month was inspired by Natural Balance’s cofounder Dick Van Patten, who was blindfolded during a visit to a guide dog school and got to experience an amazing new way to move through the world. In addition to providing better mobility for their handlers, guide dogs provide a social bridge, opening a world of possibilities for friendship and human connection. Recently, local Los Angeles resident Melissa Hudson and her fourlegged partner Camry have been awarded with Natural Balance’s ‘Top Human-Canine Teams Who Make Us Believe’ recognition. They are an outstanding example of the profound partnership that humans and their dogs are capable Page 4

of—and something all dog lovers could aspire to. Here’s their story: Diagnosed with juvenile arthritis at age 3, Melissa was at risk of losing her eyesight from a very young age. In college, Melissa had to sit closer and closer to the whiteboard in her classes and could no longer see her friends waving to her across campus. As her vision continued to deteriorate, her doctor told her: “Melissa, you need to face the facts, you’re going blind.” She was just 27 years old. The hardest step after hearing this shocking news was accepting the use of a cane to help get around. Melissa wanted to bring her old self back and move around freely—her first step was to apply to Guide Dogs for the Blind. Now on her third guide dog—a beautiful black labrador named Camry—Melissa is an entirely different person. She says that with Camry, her “invisibility clock has been lifted.” Her independence and mobility have been enhanced, and new-found freedom shines through her countless adventures with Camry. The two have traveled to three continents, including North America, Europe, and Asia. Even more importantly, through the highest of highs and lowest of lows, Camry is always by Melissa’s side. “She’s the one who knows exactly how I’m feeling, whether I’m having

The Newport News

Melissa Hudson and her guide dog Camry a good or bad day, she just knows. I wouldn’t be as much of a confident traveler without her,” says Hudson. She adds, “The misconception is that guide dogs don’t love to work, she doesn’t want to stay in! She wants to be out and about, and I give her that opportunity.” From navigating through the chaotic streets of Los Angeles to dodging skateboarders, Camry and Melissa tackle each new obstacle like professionals. Together, the two are ready to conquer the world. Newport News is an independent weekly newspaper published every Friday. We are not owned or operated by any of the big daily newspapers. The views and opinions expressed are those of the publisher and not any organization. No reproduction, in whole or in part is permitted without the express written permission of Newport News. Legal Advertising: The Newport News was adjudicated by the Orange County Superior Court as a newspaper of general circulation pursuant to Government Code 6000 case #A187752 on July 15, 1997 and as such is the appropriate newspaper to place legal and public notices for the South Orange County Judicial District including Balboa, Newport Coast, Corona del Mar and the City of Newport Beach, California.

From dogs and cats filling up social media feeds – some even with their own profiles – to true pet celebrities who command the attention of millions, animals have become a major part of the digital landscape. With this in mind, Mars Petcare conducted a survey to learn more about people’s social media habits when it comes to animals. Here are some of the top findings. All Animals, All the Time About 65 percent of pet owners post about their furry friends on social media an average of two times per week. One in six said they’ve created

a social media profile specifically for their pet – and half of those pet owners say their pets get more social attention than they do online. One third said they post about their pets as much, and as often, as they do about their human family and 13 percent admitted to posting about their pets even more than they do their human relatives. Pet Love Trumps Personal Vanity More than half of pet owners polled care more about getting “likes” and/or comments for their pet-related posts than they do for most other topics, including changes to their own profile picture. Whichever way you throw the

ball, pet posts matter most. Call Them the “Paw-Purratzi” Thirty percent of pet owners follow famous animals on social media. The bottom line is people love pets, whether it’s their own or one with real rock star status, and love sharing their stories with the world. The survey underscores what was already known: Pets have become an integral part of people’s lives and pop culture. I spy with my little eye: nutrients kids need for healthy vision

The struggle at the dinner table between parents and their picky eaters isn’t uncommon. Add in a food jag, when children fixate on a particular food and don’t want to eat anything else, and the struggle turns to worry - “Is my child getting enough nutrients in his or her diet?” While many parents worry that their children aren’t getting the right nutrients for proper overall growth, many also overlook the specific need of vitamins and nutrients for eye health. If their child’s vision is OK, then there’s no cause for worry. In fact, only 14 percent of parents are worried about their children developing vision problems in the future, according to a recent survey by Kelton/DSM Nutritional Products. Now’s the time to help children make food choices that are healthy and provide the right nutrients for their eye health. While carrots are a no-brainer when it comes to providing beta carotene (pro vitamin A) for healthy vision, a slew of other nutrients are necessary for eye health, including vitamin E, lutein, zeaxanthin and the omega-3s DHA and EPA. If you have a picky eater, try sneaking in foods that are rich in these eye-healthy nutrients. Dark leafy green vegetables (kale, spinach,

collards and turnip greens), eggs, broccoli, peas and corn are super stars when it comes to providing lutein and zeaxanthin. Fatty fish provide the omega-3s DHA and EPA. Oils, wheat germ and peanuts are loaded with vitamin E. Registered dietitian and author, Elizabeth Somer, provides ideas on how to sprinkle in these nutrients into

everyday meals. Idea 1: Whip steamed chard or spinach into mashed potatoes to make a healthy and eye-catching dish for your kids that is rich in lutein and zeaxanthin. Green mashed potatoes, anyone? Idea 2: Grate carrots and add them to pasta sauce to give it a boost of beta carotene.

Idea 3: Barring any nut allergies, blend peanut butter, wheat germ and a bit of honey to use as a fruit dip or sandwich spread. The peanuts and wheat germ add a kick of vitamin E. Idea 4: If your kids won’t eat fish to get their fill of omega-3s, look for foods, beverages and supplements fortified with fish oil or a vegetarian source of DHA from algae. - (BPT)

Easy tips to create the perfect outdoor living room

It’s that time of year - time to dust off your patio furniture, fill your planters and set up to spend the spring outdoors. While expanding an outdoor space is a top renovation project for homeowners and renters alike, it does not have to induce a state of pre-spring stress. With a few simple tips, you can create an outdoor space that adds value and comfort to your home. Focus on your front entrance “Enhance your home’s curb appeal by brightening up your front entrance,” says The Home Depot’s Director of Trend and Design,

Sarah Fishburne. “A coat of brightly colored paint on your front door can redefine the look of your home.” This year, go bold with your color choice - try coral, tomato red, teal, aqua, violet, pistachio and cobalt. Add a wreath, doormat, kick plates and new door hardware to complete the look. Knobs and handles with a burnished bronze finish also hide fingerprints and don’t show tarnish as easily. After all, a fabulous front entrance can make a powerful first impression.Design your dream deck The base of any great outdoor space is a clean slate. Start with a good scrub and power wash. Echo the feel of your interior to create a cohesive style that makes it easy for you to move indoor decor outside when you are hosting. Start by creating a sense of space with an arbor or trellis. Use colors, furniture finishes and seasonal accessories that complement each other, such as a beautiful custom patio set from Brown Jordan. If you’re unsure where to start, use an online patio planning tool to make it easier to customize the look. Mix and match patterns, textures and sheens for a designer-inspired finish. For urban dwellers in apartments or small spaces, you can create a great outdoor space by installing a vertical garden filled with succulents and a small cocktail table and chairs. Accessorize and add color “Accessories aren’t just about making a fashion statement,” says Fishburne. “In fact, adding

finishing touches to your front and back porch creates a polished look and feel.” Not only does a weather-resistant, indoor/outdoor rug anchor furniture just like in a living room but it also adds a punch of pattern and color to complement your outdoor furniture. Adding big, bright flowers, such as red geraniums is a simple and cost effective way to brighten up your outdoor space. Not a gardener? Not a problem. Achieve beautiful results with minimal effort by using Drop ‘N Bloom pre-mixed containers of bright spring flowers. For additional pop, whitewash or paint your tired planters with this season’s hottest colors - pollen yellow or aquatic green. Plan for a party What’s a great outdoor space without others to share it with? Set up your space to host parties all season long. Don’t leave your guests in the dark - hang up string lights or place solar lights around the patio to get the party going. Create ambiance and a cool conversation piece with a fire pit or add colorful throw pillows for your guests to sit back and relax. Finally, set yourself up for a season of signature meals by planting an herb garden. Make the night more interactive by inviting your guests to help pick herbs that will complement the meal. For this and more project inspiration, check out The Home Depot’s Trend and Design Tumblr. For more quick and easy gardening tips, sign up for The Garden Club, which provides regionalized garden information, forums and deals. -(BPT) The Newport News

PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated

(approved) The Newport News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people

of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising.

QUARTER PAGE COLOR This month I have terrific low prices on quarter page full color ad packages. Plus you can choose to either pay as you go. But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona Del Mar and Newport Coast? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like these reasonably priced local newspapers which are received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners. This advertising costs you far less money. These five local newspapers are attractive, effective and affordable. Let’s talk today!

The season of homework and PTO meetings is here, meaning it’s time to gear up for a successful school year. A balanced eating plan helps children, and adults, to concentrate, learn and problem-solve, in and out of the classroom. When creating your back-to-school shopping lists, remember to include foods that will nourish your child’s growing brain. Plan your family’s meals ahead of time and pay close attention to the amount of protein you serve your children at breakfast. Kids should eat about 20 grams of protein before heading off to school to help avoid hunger pangs during morning classes. Breakfast is also a golden opportunity to feed your child brainboosting nutrients such as omega-3 fats and B vitamins, as well as vitamin D to help boost immunity. “One piece of advice I have for parents is to take a couple minutes to read nutrition labels while at the grocery store,” says Registered Dietitian Elizabeth Ward. “Some foods are nutritionally superior to others.- For example, I only feed my family Eggland’s Best eggs because they taste great and provide more key nutrients than ordinary eggs.” When compared to ordinary eggs, one large Eggland’s Best egg

provides twice the amount of omega3s to support brain cells and promote healthy vision, three times more vitamin B12 to aide in proper brain function and four times more vitamin D to help with calcium absorption and boost immunity. These eggs also have 25 percent less saturated fat than ordinary eggs and contain 10 percent of the daily recommended amount of protein. Berries make an ideal side dish at breakfast because they contain compounds that help shield brain cells from every day wear and tear. Whether they are fresh, dried or frozen, blueberries, blackberries, cranberries and strawberries are bursting with powerful antioxidants that can protect the brain and may enhance memory. When your student is eating nutrient-rich foods, be sure they are properly hydrating as well. Mild dehydration affects concentration and may cause headaches. Younger children need about 57 ounces of fluid daily, while pre-teens and teens need between 71 and 81 ounces. Although water is the preferred fluid source, low-fat milk and 100 percent juice count toward daily liquid needs, too. Don’t let the hustle and bustle of the impending school year get the better

of your family’s health. Planning meals ahead of time can help nourish your little Einstein’s mind and keep your family happy and healthy. Find recipe ideas for the school year, including this Eggland’s Best Brainy Burrito, at www.egglandsbest.com or www.pinterest.com/egglandsbest. Eggland’s Best Brainy Burrito Makes one burrito Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 5 minutes Ingredients: 1 large Eggland’s Best egg 1 low-fat whole wheat tortilla 1 tablespoon low-fat refried beans 1/4 cup low-fat cheddar cheese, shredded

2 tablespoons salsa 1/2 avocado, sliced Preparation: * Spray nonstick skillet with cooking spray. * Beat egg; pour into skillet and cook, stirring continually, until slightly set, about two minutes. * Add cheese. * Spread refried beans on tortilla. * Cover with a damp paper towel and microwave for 30 seconds. * Spread egg and cheese filling down the center of the tortilla. Add salsa and sliced avocado. * Fold one side of the tortilla over filling. Fold up bottom. Roll securely. - (BPT)
