PACIFIC CHORALE ANNOUNCES SINGER AUDITIONS FOR 2019–2020 SEASON
Pacific Chorale, resident chorus at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, today announced upcoming auditions for prospective volunteer singers. Auditions will be held January 20–26, 2019 by prior appointment only. Prospective singers are requested to visit Pacific Chorale’s web site at pacificchorale.org/auditions to learn about the audition process, then to submit their information via the online form provided to schedule an audition time. Rehearsals for the fall begin in September, although singers are also encouraged to participate in Pacific Chorale’s Festival Chorus in August 2019. The 140-voice ensemble will present its own concert season at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall conducted by Artistic Director Robert Istad, as well as appearing as the guest chorus in several performances presented by Pacific Symphony. While applications are being accepted for both volunteer and paid positions with Pacific Chorale, this year’s auditions are primarily focused on proficient volunteer singers. Volunteer members of the Chorale hail from a broad range of backgrounds and career fields, but share a love for and extensive experience performing choral music. Volunteers have the opportunity to participate in both self-produced and contracted engagements calling for larger groups of singers. Pacific Chorale members enjoy a wide variety of challenging and stimulating repertoire and performance opportunities, including world and West Coast premieres and
guest appearances with prominent ensembles and artists. ABOUT ROBERT ISTAD Dr. Robert Istad has served as Pacific Chorale’s Artistic Director since July 1, 2017. He has prepared choruses for many of the world’s leading orchestral conductors, and has been featured on a number of recordings including The John Williams Collection on Sony Classical and Nostos: The Homecoming of Music on Yarlung Records. He continues in his role as Professor of Music, Director of Choral Studies, California State University, Fullerton. He is also serving as the President of the California Choral Directors Association and was recently elected to the board of directors of the national choral industry’s association, Chorus America. ABOUT PACIFIC CHORALE Pacific Chorale has delighted national and international audiences with concerts of great choral music performed at the highest musical standards since 1968. Under the artistic leadership of Robert Istad, the organization produces a series of concerts each year at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, where it serves as the sole resident choir. The mission of Pacific Chorale is to inspire our community through artistry and innovation in choral music performances and education programs. Pacific Chorale is recognized for exceptional artistic expression, preserving and performing classical choral music as well as stimulating
American-focused programming. Pacific Chorale presents a substantial performance season of its own and is sought regularly to perform with the nation’s leading symphonies. Pacific Chorale has infused an Old World art form with California’s hallmark innovation and cultural independence, developing innovative new concepts in programming, and expanding the traditional concepts of choral repertoire and performance. The organization boasts over 30 world premieres and has released 14 self-produced recordings. In addition to its long-standing partnership with Pacific Symphony, with whom Pacific Chorale made its Carnegie Hall debut in April 2018, the Chorale has performed with such
renowned American ensembles as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, the National Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, and Musica Angelica. Pacific Chorale has also toured extensively to more than 19 countries in Europe, South America and Asia, and has collaborated with the London Symphony, the Munich Symphony, L’Orchestre Lamoureux and L’Orchestre de St-Louis-en-l’Île of Paris, the National Orchestra of Belgium, the China National Symphony, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Estonian National Symphony, and the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional of Argentina.
5 DESIGN SHOW TRENDS TO INSPIRE YOUR 2019 RENOVATION
When it’s time to remodel and renovate your home, you’re no doubt on the lookout for the freshest takes in design and color choices, so you can ensure your renovation is a lasting investment. To go about your home refresh in a thoughtful way, it can help to turn to the top experts in the industry for their ideas and insight. With more than 145 years of leadership in the kitchen and bath space, Kohler Co. has worked side by side with the top designers to showcase the most inspired designs for the kitchen, bath and other areas of the home. To help you come up with looks you’ll love for years, here are five head-turning trends that led the way in 2018. Make a statement with plants: Humidity-loving plants have long added a soft contrast to the traditional hard bath surfaces. Designers are going big with the plant concept by incorporating what’s called a living wall in this room - a wall that’s essentially a floor-to-ceiling panel of things that grow. Pairing the lush greenery and soft blooms with statement fixtures - such as the curved shape of Kohler’s Veil Trough Vessel Bathroom Sink - will make your space into the perfect place to retreat and take time out for self-care. Staying in that vein of incorporating nature-inspired elements, designers are also incorporating new natural materials like wood and stone into kitchen and bath design. Shifts in the color story: The bright whites that have dominated design books this past decade won’t be gone, but they are starting to make their retreat. In 2018 we saw an abundance of earthy neutrals to choose from, like stone grays, blush pinks and warm terracotta - colors that inspire warm feelings and connections to nature. Where white was once uber-trendy in cabinet design, the script has flipped to deep, moody velvet-inspired hues like emerald green, burgundy, navy and black. Going for the gold: When it comes to fixtures, Page 4
chrome dominated style books for years. But now, designers are turning toward gold, copper and bronze fixtures at a increasing rate. With a variety of finishes to choose from, from gleaming rose gold to a burnished copper, opting for warm toned fixtures is easy way to add texture and interest to any room. Next-level entertaining: The idea of the home as a haven is catching on. One concept to consider is turning that extra room or basement into an intimate, inviting space tailor made for unwinding and entertaining. To create that escapist vibe that calls back to the speak-easy, go with dark-hued walls and cabinetry to create an eye-catching contrast with pops of colorful art and gleaming fixtures. To lighten up the somber tone, playful

designs like Kohler’s Artifacts Gentleman’s Bar Faucet adds a touch of retro charm. High function, stylish design: The kitchen is the busiest room in the house, which is why homeowners welcome new ideas in hard-working, durable solutions that are also aesthetically pleasing. Incorporating design into the kitchen has never been easier with options like Kohler’s Purist Kitchen Faucet - a design that works seamlessly with any style/aesthetic/taste. Adding a secondary island to the kitchen will keep all your gear ultraorganized; and adding sinks to one or both islands can make food prep a snap - even with multiple cooks in the kitchen. 5 REASONS TO MAKE A CAREER IN FITNESS Imagine waking up early on a Monday morning with a smile on your face. You’re excited to get the week started because you love what you do. Or how about taking a Tuesday afternoon all to yourself, without having to ask permission and use your precious vacation time? It might sound like a dream, but with a career in fitness, it could be your reality. A career in fitness is not only flexible, but financially rewarding, and caters to a variety of personalities. The fitness industry is booming, so there’s plenty of opportunities to grow and be successful with your very own business. If you’ve been on the fence about a career in the fitness industry, here are some reasons that might convince you to finally make the switch. Make a living by helping others. “I love nothing more than using the research based, scientifically proven approach I have learned through my education to help others accomplish their goals,” says Heather Esterline, a graduate of Life Time Academy, a professional fitness trainer program that lets you step into the industry and build upon your career goals. Working in the fitness industry is highly rewarding as you help people improve their health. You have the opportunity to be an important mentor and trusted friend in every client’s life. See tangible results when working with clients. As you work with clients and watch them reach their goals, you can see the results of your knowledge and expertise. Whether you’re helping someone lose weight, gain muscle or simply learn the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, you’ll be rewarded as each client continues to make progress. Choose your specialty. Whether you want to be a personal trainer, group fitness instructor, yoga teacher or even a health club owner,
you have the chance to choose your focus. No matter how you want to enter the fitness industry, there’s a class or program to pave your path. Life Time Fitness’ personal training certification program offers several different courses and passes to help you earn the credentials you need to get your career off the ground. The Life Time Academy has two different certification courses that start on October 17 - the Premier and Elite Certification courses. During the Elite Professional Fitness Trainer Courses, participants not only become certified throughout the 24-week course, but also get hands on experience during an externship consisting of 120 hours, altogether equaling 260 contact hours. If learning the foundations of personal training and corrective exercise is more of your interest, the Premier Professional Fitness Trainer Course may be better for you, lasting 16 weeks and 120 contact hours. Work with a variety of people in many places. When you have a career in fitness, you’re not sitting in an office, having meetings with the same coworkers every day. From personal trainer to health club owner, there are so many
opportunities for working in this field. You can be self-employed, work with a team or even establish your own business and employ a staff. Whether you want to work indoors or out, choose your environment, your schedule and enjoy a healthy work/ life balance. It’s one of the fastest growing careers. Positive vibes and low stress make personal training one of the top rated professions by CNN Money Magazine. And it doesn’t take long for your personal training career to skyrocket. For example, Jason Sweetnam, personal trainer and team weight loss instructor for Life Time Fitness, was 250 pounds and living an unhealthy lifestyle when he decided to begin his fitness journey. He decided to improve his health and is now a working full-time helping others get their fitness and nutrition on track. Are you looking for a career change that allows you to be passionate about your work? If any of these reasons speak to you, then it might be time to break into the fitness industry. -(BPT)

4 EASY HEALTH TIPS TO STAY TOUGH THIS WINTER SEASON With never-ending holiday gatherings, travel, Sunday football tailgates and early morning snow-shoveling, everyone’s looking to stay strong and healthy this winter season. Along with colder temperatures, winter also brings a host of preventable sicknesses. In fact, the CDC estimates that there were over 49.7 million cases of the flu in the United States between 2017 and 2018, with a major spike occurring from November through February. With cold and flu season in full effect, you should get a flu shot if you can safely do so. Beyond that, you can help keep your immune system strong by making simple tweaks to your daily routine, like adding Welch’s 100% Grape Juice to meet your daily vitamin C needs. Check out these four simple things to keep you feeling strong and healthy this flu season: 1. Get your zzz’s Did you know that most healthy adults need between 7-9 hours of sleep? More than ever, be sure to get enough sleep and establish a morning routine so your body can acclimate and regenerate this winter. With colder temps and less daylight, it becomes more difficult to get up and going, so begin your morning with an upbeat playlist or mindful meditation to start the day off energized. 2. Add tough antioxidants Kicking your day off on the right foot should also mean starting with a glass of Welch’s 100% Grape Juice. Packed with antioxidants, it’s a great source of vitamin C, which helps support a healthy immune system. One 8-ounce glass contains more than 40 Concord grapes and one servings of fruit, without any added sugars, colors or flavors. Welch’s Concord grape juice also contains more
antioxidants than acai or blueberry and can serve as that super fuel to help you stay tough this winter. 3. Eat seasonally Keep your diet healthy and seasonal. Need something to warm you up and keep you feeling good? Seek out foods like soups, stews and stirfry that incorporate lean meats, dark leafy greens and legumes, all of which are high in iron, which helps increase vitamin C absorption and may help maintain energy. 4. Protect your gut Did you know nearly 80 percent of your immune system is based in your gut? Ensure your gut stays
healthy to help boost your immunity and maximize your vitamin absorption. Opt for probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kombucha and pickled vegetables. Whether you’re looking to keep your immune system strong or get a head-start on establishing habits for a healthy 2019, look to incorporate these simple hacks - and Welch’s 100% Grape Juice into your daily routine. TOP 4 NUTRITION PREDICTIONS IN THE NEW YEAR
Several food and nutrition trends were in the spotlight this year, including the continued rise of plant-based diets, non-dairy ice creams and superfoods that are blasts from the past - legumes, apples and cabbage. It can be easy to experience nutrition whiplash in the New Year, but don’t be a victim. Get a jump-start on understanding the top nutrition trends that will impact quality of life and make it easier to add important vitamins and nutrients to the body. “The start of a fresh year always ushers in new opportunities to make one’s health better,” said Elizabeth Somer, MA, RD and author of “Eat Your Way to Sexy.” “Study after study consistently finds that most Americans don’t meet even minimum standards of a balanced diet, so it’s important to be aware of advances in nutrition, so you can optimize your health all year long.” There are four key nutrition predictions that will top 2019. Page 6
No. 1 - Personalized nutrition A one-size-fits-all approach that can be applied to vitamins, minerals, omega-3s and other essential nutrients doesn’t align with what research reveals about individual nutrient needs. Many factors tweak the basic recommendations, including age, gender, health status, medication use, stress level, sleep habits, exercise routines and more. For example, when the body is exposed to ultra violet (UV) light, it manufactures vitamin D; however, as we age, the body becomes less and less efficient at making vitamin D. This is when dietary and supplement sources become increasingly more important while the needs for the vitamin increase. It is no wonder there will be a growing trend and demand for personalized nutrition recommendations in 2019. Nutrition innovators - like www.vitaminpacks. com - are already responding by developing comprehensive nutritional assessments to curate unique combinations of vitamins and nutrients designed specifically to the individual consumer. No. 2 - Awareness of drug nutrient interactions According to a recent paper published
The San Clemente News
in the European Journal of Nutrition, vitamins and other nutrients play a crucial role in metabolism - the process in the body that supports overall health. How vitamins and phytonutrients interact with prescription medications can impact metabolism. In one example, antacid medications can interfere with vitamin B12 and calcium absorption, so requirements for these and other nutrients may increase, yet people don’t make the adjustment in their supplement plans. Therefore, it is important to consult a health care practitioner before adding a dietary supplement, so prescription medications and vitamin supplements can live in harmony. No. 3 - Go with your gut Probiotics are live bacteria that are good for health, especially the digestive system. It may be easy to think of bacteria as something that causes diseases, but the body is full of bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are the “good” or “helpful” bacteria because they have been known for years to help keep the gut healthy. What’s more, research has shown that the benefits of probiotics may span more than the gut, including the circulatory, hormonal and nervous systems. Probiotics are naturally
found in the body to varying degrees, and there are high levels of probiotics in some foods and supplements. Encouraging the growth of probiotic bacteria is important in maintaining an effective intestinal barrier, enhancing nutrient absorption and blocking toxins and pathogens. A focus on gut health and spotlighting food and dietary supplements that support a healthy belly will top 2019 nutrition trends. No. 4 - Vitamin K2 Don’t confuse this K2 with the mountain in the Himalayas. Vitamin K2 is an overlooked vitamin that helps control calcium movement in the body and supports healthy arteries and bone health. It is found at sub-optimal levels in the traditional diet, but can be found at high levels in fermented foods, like sauerkraut and the Korean dish kimchi. Vitamin K2 will no longer be overlooked in 2019. Ask a health care practitioner about adding this important vitamin to the diet, especially if fermented foods aren’t served regularly for dinner. It doesn’t take a crystal ball to predict what will be the hottest nutrition trends in 2019; it only requires a look at the latest nutrition research and connecting with a health care provider or registered dietitian. - (BPT)

TIME- SAVING T RI C K S T H AT S AVE H O U R S EA CH W EEK
When you look at your to-do list, does it seem a mile long? From running errands, returning emails and making hurried trips to the ATM, modern life has never been busier for Americans. You can reclaim your day by using a few simple time-saving methods. By simplifying common tasks, you can open up hours each week plus reduce stress levels. The following are some strategies to consider if you want to make a big impact. Handheld financial freedom Need to pay the babysitter, split the lunch bill or send money to your sister for grandma’s birthday gift? No need to run to the ATM. Person-to-person (P2P) payment options make it safe and simple to send money instantly. Gareth Gaston, executive vice president of Omnichannel for U.S. Bank, shared results from the U.S. Bank Cash Behavior survey, which shows that 47 percent of people prefer to use digital apps to make payments versus cash. What’s more, this desire crosses generations, so both boomers and millennials - and everyone in between - want to digitize personal payments. A great, hassle-free option for P2P is Zelle, a payment network backed by
leading financial institutions including U.S. Bank. Zelle works through your mobile banking app and allows you to quickly and securely send and receive payments. Plus, once you are registered, there is virtually no waiting period - accounts instantly reflect deposits and transfers. Imagine the time saved when you eliminate lastminute cash runs. Learn more at www.USbank.com/zelle. Work smarter, not harder Whether you’re a bi-coastal professional or a stay-at-home parent, you have a lot to get done and little time to do it. With some strategic planning, your days will be less hectic while maximizing productivity. Being proactive and organized can save loads of time. For example, on Sunday, organize outfits for the entire week for you and the kids. Another smart tip is to pack lunches, backpacks and briefcases the night prior. Do these things and your mornings will be smooth sailing. Another huge time-saver is how you communicate. Rather than responding to messages as they come, block specific times on your calendar - such as at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. - to respond to communication. When you return emails, calls and
texts in batches, you save time over stringing out these activities throughout the day. Bonus tip: For smartphone addicts, make sure you program autofill words you commonly use to make finger typing lightning fast. Shop savvy and eliminate errands Running around town can eat up a lot of your valuable time. If you can automate deliveries of frequently used items, do it. Common household goods that are always on your list will no longer be a reason that drags you out the door.
Additionally, many retailers now offer online order and pickup options. This means you do all your shopping from the comfort of your home or office, and then just swing by the store and they load your bags into your car. No crammed aisles, no long lines, no stress. From eliminating the need for cash on hand to easing email overload, these smart tips will save you time so you can spend your spare moments doing the things you really love. Reclaim your life by adopting these strategies today. - (BPT)

FROM OPORTO TO PAPE A WINE JOURNEY THROUGH EUROPE this part of the world.” Beaujolais grapes are picked and bottled inexpensively in the same year, and a lot of this wine is sent to the U.S. for Thanksgiving and the holiday seasons. It’s a light bodied red made from the Gamay grape in the province of Beaujolais just north of Lyon.
TASTE OF WINE & FOOD travel writers Nancine and Scott Hagner this time stored their motor home and wound up on a Rhone River cruise in the southern heart of France
Good News! TASTE OF WINE & FOOD has heard from our good friends and travel writers, Scott and Nancine Hagner. Every once in a while, they’re on the open road with their motor home, as long as it winds up next to a “yummy winery.” They have discovered tucked away wineries in the Northwest, Sonoma and Mexico with an eye toward less traveled destinations. In exchange, I turned Scott on to a wine shop that he simply can’t resist here in San Diego County. So much so, he has called it “The Candy Store.” Their latest adventure took a different turn this time. They left their motor home behind in San Diego and crossed the “big pond” to explore wine countries of Portugal and France. My traveler friends tend to think like I do. When they pack up and leave town for far away places with many types of wineries, they do as I do and go for the opposite to the norm and pick the best for first! On this trip, they headed straight for the Douro Valley of Portugal and the legendary Oporto, home of the best ports in the world. The Douro River translates to “River of Gold.” Port, it must be told, is a dense concentrated wine, mostly red (although the Hagners found some whites) and is a blend of local grapes, zapped with a generous dose of Brandy, an after-
dinner spirit, that brings the alcohol content up to about 20%. They also observed that a number of ports had some very proper British names on the labels. The Sandeman 2015 got a big nod as a very flavorful port. ($55) You may also be familiar with Graham, Dow, Churchill and Taylor Fladgate. All are British. These companies and other Brits introduced Port to the known world some centuries ago and still produce more than the locals. The Hagners next went through Northern Spain to get to the Rhone River in France, boarding on a 7 night trip from Lyon south of Burgundy, to just north of the southern coast at Arles. This cruise by AMA Waterways is called “The Colors of Provence” with culinary kitchens and legendary vineyards that feature Beaujolais and Cotes du Rhone. The ship holds an intimate 160 or guests with restaurants, massage, a sundeck pool, and shore excursions to wineries and vineyards. “Southern France provided many wine tasting experiences both on board and on shore,” said Nancine. “We learned about local wines from Marie and J. Pierre of Domaine Du Bois Pothier winery. The harvesting and destemming is all done manually. No irrigation is permitted (called dry farming) as rain is plentiful in
Scott added that “we had several favorites on board from the famous Cote du Rhone region. They were primarily Syrah and Chardonnay in the northern district. We spent some time at the equally famous Hermitage region, mostly reds from the Syrah grape, with small quantities of white grapes like Rousanne and Marsanne, grown on very steep slopes.” At Chapoutier winery, one of the largest in the area, Nancine and Scott were presented a tasting of special red wines from Chateauneuf Du Pape (translates to “new castle of the pope” located off the right bank of the Rhone and north of Avignon. “Wines from this region are fuller bodied and are mostly red blends of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah, said Nancine. “The rocky terrain provides structure and

HANDCRAFTED AMERICAN FURNITURE BUILT TO LAST Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you. That quote by Frank Lloyd Wright is ever so present in the work of Sean Woolsey Studio. Based in Costa Mesa, Sean Woolsey and his team design and meticulously craft handmade furniture built to last for generations. “Our pieces are purposefully designed to last generations , in contrast to a ”throw away” mass market approach. The core of what we do is informed by the beauty, structure, and simplicity in nature” Woolsey says. Growing up Woolsey was influenced by his father, a reputable stained glass artist building lamps and custom doors and windows for high profile clients all over the country. “My dad taught me a lot, and was a role model to me in many ways. “I grew up building skate ramps, then had a stint in the apprel industry (having his own 2 brands) then working for Hurley in Costa Mesa. I ultimately wanted to make things with my hands, built things with purpose and out of the best materials possible. Pieces that I would be proud to own myself.” Woolsey left the apparel industry and forged a new path in hand crafted furniture. Today Sean Woolsey Studio makes everything in southern California, from chairs and desks to pool tables and ping pong tables.

SEGERSTROM CENTER’S 45TH ANNUAL CANDLELIGHT CONCERT RAISES $1.5 MILLION An “Enchanted Evening” was had by all who attented this year’s Segerstrom Center for the Arts 45th Annual Candlelight Concert, a holiday tradition that is anticipated each year, especially by me! It is truly one of the most glamorous Orange County Holiday celebrations and it keeps getting bigger and better, this year the folks at the Segerstrom Center knocked it out of the park - seriously! Sandy Segerstrom Daniels and Jane Fujishige Yada chaired the annual gala with a great team. They had more than 450 people attend and raised $1.5 million. The money helps Segerstrom Center to present an incomparable array of world-class entertainment, and to serve the community with education programs, free events and performances on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza and classes in its American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School and the School of Dance and Music for Children with Disabilities. Guests arrived to an emerald-colored carpet welcome and carols sung by the Plaza Vista Middle School Choir. Receptions were on the Plaza and Orchestra Level lobbies and dinner on the Segerstrom Hall stage. For the eponymous concert, Daniels and Yada chose a salute to classic Broadway and film tunes, performed by Tony® Award winner Susan Egan and John Lloyd Young and Broadway stars Tony Yazbeck and Michel Bell and the Cal State University Fullerton Singers. Yazbeck opened the evening with “Pure Imagination” from the film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and later sang AND tap danced to “Almost Like Being in Love” from Brigadoon. Egan included a medley of songs made famous by Judy Garland and one of her own signature pieces, “Maybe This Time” from Cabaret. Young offered songs from Jersey Boys, the show and score that brought him a Tony, an Oscar and a Grammy. Bell included his own hallmark song – Show Boat’s “Ol’ Man River” and Mame’s “We Need A Little Christmas.” The CSFU Singers brought the concert to a rousing close with “Tonight” from West Side Story and “Aquarius” and “Let The Sunshine In” from Hair. The “reveal” of the stage for the dinner is always exciting and this year, it was spectacular. Dripping long crystal chandeliers with white tall vases holding the most beautiful flowers, and don’t forget about the candles! Dinner was just as spectacular with our first course starting off with a Pumpkin Ginger Panna Cotta salad with spicy walnut honey crostini, butter lettuce, slices of Granny Smith apple, candied ginger, roasted butternut squash, dried cranberries, Point Reyes blue cheese and a cranberry apple vinaigrette. The main course was (to me) an “oh my gosh” Lobster and Short Ribs that melted in your mouth - topped with a quail egg served with white cheddar polenta toast, crispy onion, broccolini and a mustard bordelaise. You know I love desserts, so what better way to end this culinary delight than with a White Chocolate Sphere with brown butter chocolate crumble, pop rocks and a bourbon caramel sauce with cinnamon Chantilly (yes, I said pop rocks!) After dinner, Daniels and Yada turned up the heat with dancing by the legendary, iconic Earth, Wind and Fire. The crowd went wild and danced until the very last note. And yes, I was in the front row just thrilled that I was able to see up close and personal these musical icons. We all came back to ‘earth’ as we left Segerstrom Hall, through another enchanted moment of snowfall to enjoy a late evening reception at the Kia Valet Lounge on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza. Hot beverages, ‘late night bites’ – including fancy couture-level donuts – kept everyone busy and sated as they waited for their cars. Each lady went home with a lovely gift provided by Luxury Jewelry Presenting Sponsor Lugano Diamonds. In addition to Lugano Diamonds, underwriters included Sandy Segerstrom Daniels, Betty and S.L. Huang, Kia Motors America, Tracy and Roger Kirwan, Shanaz and Jack Langson, Mara and Keith Murray, Carol and Mark Perry, Janet and Clifford Ronnenberg, Connie and Peter Spenuzza, Carol and Kent Wilken, and Jane Fujishige Yada. Segerstrom Center is a leader among the nation’s performing arts centers for providing education programs designed to inspire young people through the arts. The Center’s programs reach hundreds of thousands of students each year in five Southern California counties. Community engagement programs developed through the Center for Dance and Innovation and Center Without Boundaries also connect the Center more comprehensively with Orange County’s many diverse communities. The CDI supports flagship artistic programming and a wide range of projects that celebrate innovation, nurture creativity and engage audiences of the future. It is home to the ABT Gillespie School and the School of Dance and Music for Children with Disabilities. The Center Without Boundaries develops partnerships with non-cultural organizations to help them in their own efforts to respond to the ever-changing needs of the community. THE SAVVY HOMEOWNER’S 5-POINT OUTDOOR WINTERIZATION CHECKLIST
As temperatures drop, you’re reminded that Old Man Winter will soon rear his ugly head. Before the first flurries fly, it’s important to take some winterization steps to ensure your home is ready for whatever the season brings. This five-point checklist will help safeguard your home against winter’s woes for another year. For additional winterization ideas and detailed project plans, visit Real Cedar.com. Inspect windows Inspect each window from the outside to see if any gaps or cracks are present. These small openings let in cold air and are also inviting to small critters looking for protection from the cold. If you find some gaps, it’s important to seal them quickly. Apply caulk to the openings to prevent cold air from seeping in, helping to cut down on heating bills. Plus, you won’t have to worry about bugs making your home their hibernation haven. Note: never caulk above or below the window and door openings, as this may block moisture drainage. Prep the deck The amount of work you have to put into winterizing your deck depends on your decking material. For example, a durable, long-lasting material such as Western Red Cedar requires the least amount of maintenance. That said, all decks require some upkeep. To preserve your deck’s luster, start by cleaning it with a warm, soapy solution and a soft-bristle brush. Do not power wash as this can damage the wood. It’s important that you remove all dirt and debris from the surface as well as in between the boards to improve ventilation.
Next, inspect the deck for mold. If present, wash the deck with a mild oxygen bleach solution and leave on the surface for 30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Finally, remove anything that might leave marks on the deck’s surface such as furniture, planters and mats. Protect planter boxes The majority of planter boxes are made with Western Red Cedar. That’s because the wood is naturally resistant to rot, decay and insects; and therefore, doesn’t require treatment from potentially dangerous chemicals that can leach into soil and plants. But like all garden beds, real cedar planters need protection during the winter months. Start by removing all soil and cleaning the boxes as you did the deck. Then, if possible, store emptied planters in a garage, shed or under the porch. If you don’t have the space to store them this way, then cover them with a water-repellent tarp to protect from moisture buildup, but don’t seal the tarp. As with decks, it’s very important that you allow for proper ventilation. Trim trees Look for weak trees or those with dead branches, particularly those near your home. As snow accumulates, the weight may bring down a tree or branches, potentially damaging your house. Eliminate this risk by removing any dead trees or dangerous branches now before the first snow. Be safe by using the proper equipment for tree trimming and removal, or, consider hiring a pro to do so. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and handling this issue now could prevent costly damage to your home
down the road. Clean the roof Your roof is a large portion of your home, and it also holds a lot of snow over the winter. To prevent ice dams and other roof problems when freezing temperatures arrive, it’s important to clean gutters and check your roof for problems now. Start by taking all debris out of gutters to ensure free flow for water. Next, walk around your roof and inspect it for any damage. Repair loose shingles and make sure the chimney and vents look intact and secure. Your roof takes on a lot of weight from ice and snow during the winter months and you want it to be as strong as possible. A few simple steps now can mean a cozy, safe winter for you and your entire family. Add these five steps to your winterization to-do list for this weekend and give yourself valuable peace of mind. - (BPT)

FORMER HOME OF SINGER PEGGY LEE FOR SALE!
Sultry jazz singer, songwriter and screen actress Peggy Lee, who popularized Lover, Fever and Is That All There Is?, who could pack concerts tighter than Frank Sinatra and whose fans included Albert Einstein and Aldous Huxley, lived until her 2002 death in this French Regency-style estate in Los Angeles’ elite Bel Aire neighborhood. It is currently on the market priced at $9.995 million. Built in 1969 and designed to host event-sized parties, this stunning two-story Bel Air mansion practically begs it’s owners to entertain, show off its regal interior and stroll its Old World-style terraced gardens with lush plantings, fruit trees and roses. The entry doors in the vine-covered exterior walls are replicas from a historic church in Oxford and open into a soaring foyer with circular staircase and a chandelier that Peggy Lee sourced from a Paris flea market. Measuring 6,062 square feet with five bedrooms, seven baths and views overlooking Los Angeles, tree tops and the Pacific, the home has six Tuscan-style fireplaces, a great room overlooking the views to the ocean over the terrace with European style pool and spa, a den, library

and an Old World style kitchen with unfinished Venetian plaster walls, a Calacatta marble slab island, dining area and a barrel-vaulted ceiling of hand-laid imported tile imported from an Italian estate. Antique flooring is from an historic villa in the South of France and appliances are Wolf and Miele. An elevator ascends to the second floor where there is a two-bedroom master suite and two separate guest suites. A rooftop terrace offers panoramic views and the home is on one of the few culde-sacs in Bel Air, offering additional privacy. Peggy Lee was discovered by Benny Goodman, the popular bandleader, while singing in a nightclub in 1940. By 1943 Lee left the band and was making a name for herself with her whispery singing style appearing with the country’s biggest pop stars - Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and Bing Crosby, all of whom also got their start with the Big Bands. Well known for popularizing the songs Fever and Is That All There Is? and multiple popular albums, her songs became especially meaningful to those leaving for deployment in World War II and to those they were

leaving behind. Her singing skills eventually parlayed her into film acting, more songwriting and voice overs for Disney animations. Lee was nominated for twelve Grammy Awards and in 1995, given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1999, she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Songstress Peggy Lee’s former
Bel Aire mansion, restored over three years to its original beauty is now for sale, priced at $9.955 million. Co-listing agents are Billy Rose and Jon Grauman of The Agency, Beverly Hills. Photo credit: The Agency Source: theagencyre.com, toptenrealestatedeals.com

QUARTER PAGE COLOR This month I have terrific low prices on quarter page full color ad packages. Plus you can choose to either pre pay or pay as you go. But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in San Clemente, Talega, Dana Point? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like these reasonably priced local newspapers which are received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners. This advertising costs you far less money. These five local newspapers are attractive, effective and affordable. Let’s talk today!

SECRETARY OF STATE ALEX PADILLA ENCOURAGES ENTREPRENEURS The Secretary of State’s online business entity document filing and search hub bizfile California serves as an important tool for California entrepreneurs. In the past year, bizfile was expanded to allow Californians to file trademarks and servicemarks and form Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) online. Now, Californians can use an online form to terminate their LLC. Click here for the new LLC Termination tool. “Bizfile California is making it easier to do business in our state,” Secretary of State Alex Padilla said. “Expanding bizfile California helps entrepreneurs avoid the lengthier review turnaround time associated with paper filings. As we increase our online business tool offerings, we’re also decreasing the rejection rate for common business filings. As California business owners and entrepreneurs are preparing for end of year filings, they can avoid the lines at the office by going online and utilizing bizfile California.” * LLC Statement of Information Online Submission Tool.
