The Westminster Kennel Clubs Westminster Week 2018
Photo by Jack Grassa The Westminster Kennel Club and American Kennel Club partnered once again to bring dog and cat lovers a fun-filled, action-packed, fan-favorite day during Westminster Week 2018. Meet & Compete, featuring the 5th Annual Masters Agility Championship at Westminster and the 9th AKC Meet the Breeds®, presented by Purina Pro Plan, returned to Manhattan on Feb. 10, 2018 at Piers 92 and 94. Masters Agility Championship at Westminster The Masters Agility Championship at Westminster once again featured some of the country’s greatest canine athletes and their handlers as they faced a challenging obstacle course of jumps, tunnels, weave poles, and more, in entertaining races against the clock. The entry is limited to 330 dogs that have attained Master agility titles (MX and MXJ, or MXP and MJP) at the time of entry, virtually guaranteeing a top-performing field. The Agility competition was divided into five height classes - 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 inches, which refer to the height of the jumps in that class. Dogs competed in the class appropriate for their size. At Westminster, each dog competed in two qualifying rounds – a Standard Agility course and a Jumpers
with Weaves course. Scoring for eligibility to the Championship round was the combined actual running time of both runs, plus any faults (refusal/ run-out, wrong course, table fault, failure) and course time faults. Dogs were placed in order of the lowest combined score within their true AKC jump height. The twelve dogs from each height class with the lowest combined scores moved on to the televised Championship round Saturday evening, creating a field of 60 finalists competing for the coveted title of Westminster Kennel Club Masters Agility Champion. The championship course was a hybrid of the qualifying rounds and ran as a ‘time to beat’ course, where the first dog set the baseline time for the subsequent competitors. The Masters Agility Championship at Westminster included AKC- registered purebred dogs, mixed breeds enrolled in the AKC’s Canine Partners program, Miscellaneous breeds not yet eligible for conformation competition, Foundation Stock Service recorded breeds, and Purebred Alternative Listing dogs (purebred dogs that cannot be fully AKC registered). Agility judges for 2018 were Mr. Don Farage of Bartlett, Tennessee and Mr. David Powell of Auzielle, Occitanie, France.
AKC Meet the Breeds® This event offered attendees the unique opportunity to meet and play with more than 200 different dog and cat breeds and allows dog lovers to learn about responsible pet ownership and what breed is right for their lifestyle by visiting elaborately decorated booths depicting fun elements of each breed’s history. Attendees were encouraged to learn from the on-site experts themselves – breeders, enthusiasts, trainers and groomers – who can share what sets their breed apart from every other unique breed. Welcoming a Puppy Home Tips for new puppy parents on transition, toys, food and more Nothing is more heartwarming than the first warm nuzzle from a new puppy. With new pets, however, come new responsibilities and opportunities, which can often lead to New Year’s resolutions involving new furry friends. “No matter the season, it’s always a moving and emotional experience when a puppy finds a new home,” said Eran Cohen, chief customer experience officer at PetSmart. “Our passionate associates are available to help bring pet parents closer to their pets so they can live more fulfilled lives.” To help puppy parents welcome their pets home – and keep New Year’s commitments – PetSmart, the largest specialty pet retailer across North America, offers this expert advice on nutrition, socialization, essentials and health care to help keep pets happy and healthy. Find a Veterinarian A veterinarian should be your first call if your puppy gets into something that could potentially harm him or her. Vets are also great resources to keep you up-to-date on puppy care, like vaccination timing. Use a tool like the free askPETMD app, available in the Apple App and Google Play stores, to find a veterinarian near you.
ID Your Pet While pets are getting acclimated to their home, and with people going in and out, it can be easy for them to slip out a door. Be prepared in case they embark on an unplanned journey around the neighborhood. To ensure you are reunited, outfit your pup with proper ID, including a personalized ID tag. Pup-Proof Your Home Dogs love to chew, whether it’s on shoes or something more dangerous like wiring or extension cords. To protect them and promote positive chewing experiences, use toys or treats to occupy their time and allow them to chew safely, such as a Puppy Bone Starter Toy Kit. It’s also important to place household products like trash, laundry detergent and cleaning supplies out your pup’s reach. Give Puppies Their Own Space According to a survey commissioned by PetSmart and conducted by Wakefield Research, 47 percent of U.S. dog owners let their puppy sleep in bed with them seven nights per week. However, when it’s time for puppies to rest on their own, a puppy crate can perform double duty, providing puppies their own area away from stressors to nap and
serving as a structure that promotes potty training. Give Your Dog Time to Acclimate Socialization is critical during a pup’s early years. While everyone may be ready to meet the new member of your family, consider introducing them to one or two people at a time, so the puppy can get to know them and warm up to their scent. Research Nutrition It may be tempting to feed a puppy human food, but they require specially formulated food and often have different eating schedules than an adult dog. Do your research, read labels and ask questions. Consider leading natural pet lifestyle brands, like Only Natural Pet, which offer
formulas such as Puppy Power Feast food, as well as a variety of treats. Invest in Training Consistent training is an important responsibility of a puppy parent. Dogs crave love and praise, and a properly trained pooch will better understand what’s expected of him or her. If necessary, get help from puppy training experts to help ensure all family members are able to live happily in one harmonious pack. Find more tips for welcoming a new pet into your home this year at PetSmart.com or download PetSmart’s mobile app, which tailors content to help guide pet parents based on your pet profile. 5 smart steps to preserving brain health
Everyone knows aerobic exercise gets the heart pumping and lifting weights keeps muscles strong. But when it comes to keeping the brain healthy, most people are unsure what to do. As you age, brain health and maintaining memory functions becomes a top concern. Turns out, these issues may begin sooner than you think. “We tend to think about memory decline as an older person’s issue, but that’s not the case at all,” says Dr. Aimee Gould Shunney, a licensed naturopathic doctor specializing in women’s health and family medicine. “There was a study published in 2012 in the British Medical Journal that examined cognitive function in people age 45 to 70. The researchers did not expect it, but they found evidence of cognitive decline in the 45-yearold participants as well as the older participants.” She notes there are two basic pathological processes that cause degeneration of the brain: oxidative stress and inflammation. Basically, the standard American diet and lifestyle contribute to those processes. So who is this really an issue for? Men and women of all ages. No matter your age, you can take charge of your brain health by following these five smart steps from Dr. Shunney: Page 14
Healthy eating “A Mediterranean-type diet that focuses on whole foods, good fats and foods high in antioxidants is a great place to start,” says Dr. Shunney. She encourages her patients to focus on getting omega-3 fats from fish and monounsaturated fats from olives, olive oil, nuts and seeds. She also recommends increasing fruits (especially berries) and beans (they’re packed with antioxidants). What’s more, research shows a little cocoa, coffee and red wine can act as antioxidants and are beneficial in low to moderate amounts. Supplements In addition to a quality multivitamin, Dr. Shunney recommends an omega-3 supplement. “Getting enough omega3s is one of the most important measures we can take,” she says. “DHA is the dominant omega-3 in the brain. Just like we need to make sure babies have enough DHA to grow their brain, we need to make sure older people get enough DHA to keep their brains healthy.” She suggests Omega Memory by Nordic Naturals. It’s a DHA-dominant omega-3 formula that also includes other brain healthy ingredients: curcumin, phosphatidylcholine and huperzine A. Learn more at www. nordicnaturals.com. Regular sleep
The San Clemente News
Poor sleep is a risk factor for cognitive decline. “Studies show both sleep deprivation and sleeping too much impact cognitive performance,” Dr. Shunney says. “A good goal is to go to bed around the same time each night, sleep for 7-8 hours, and get up around the same time every morning.” Thinking activities “I recommend anything that keeps your mind working,” says Dr. Shunney. “Activities that require things to be arranged or puzzles that have to be put together. Crossword puzzles, word games and board games are all great.” She also notes some activities to avoid: “It’s important to limit certain
activities. The constant scanning of social media and newsfeeds eliminates creativity and keeps us on edge. Limit the time you spend doing that and instead do things that cause you to explore and think and put ideas together on your own.” Socialize “Social isolation has been linked with cognitive decline,” says Dr. Shunney. “In one study, people who were lonely experienced cognitive decline at a 20 percent faster rate than people who were not lonely.” Make time to take a foreign language class, join a Toastmaster’s Club, take a watercolor class anything that connects you regularly to other people. - (BPT)

CASA ROMANTICA INVITES NATIONALLY-ACCLAIMED USC PROFESSOR Milind Tambe TO DEBUNK A.I. MYTHS AND SHARE ITS GLOBAL BENEFITS Casa Up Close: How Can Artificial Intelligence (AI) be Used for Social Good? Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens, a nonprofit southern California cultural center, is pleased to announce the next lecture in its Casa Up Close educational series, ‘How Can A.I. Be Used For Social Good?’ The lecture will be led by Milind Tambe, the Helen N. and Emmett H. Jones Professor of Engineering and Founding Co-Director of the Center For Artificial Intelligence in Society (CAIS) at the University of Southern California. Tambe is a highly-regarded expert on artificial intelligence as a socioeconomic tool who has been interviewed by several national media groups such as CNN and Fox News. The lecture will be held on Thursday March 8, 2018 at 7:00 pm in Casa Romantica’s Main Salon, and tickets are now available to purchase. “A.I. is already guiding us towards self-driving cars and temperaturecontrolled homes using just our voice, but our community needs to understand additional benefits that it can provide in the future,” says Executive Director Berenika Schmitz. “We are grateful for Professor Tambe for taking the time to educate and engage the community in groundbreaking technology.” Professor Milind Tambe: Championing the Global Impact of Artificial Intelligence Professor Milind Tambe is a champion of artificial intelligence whose research has helped engineers, policy-makers, and humanitarian organizations create plans to solve issues like hunger, homelessness, and national security. He has received numerous awards for his work such as the Rist Prize of the Military Operations Research Society and Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation Homeland security award. Locally, he received the Orange County Engineering Council Outstanding Project Achievement Award in 2015. In 2013, he founded the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Society with fellow USC Professor Eric Rice. The goal of the center is to use A.I. for the social good: for instance, peers at the center compiled data about when and where poaching activities were occurring in Ugandan wildlife
preserves. They created an algorithm that an A.I. program continuously updates with new information and which allows it to project where and when poaching activities are likely to happen next, so that wildlife protection teams can be prepared to defend endangered species on the preserve like elephants, tigers, and rhinoceros. The Protection Assistant for Wildlife Security program, called PAWS, is not at work in multiple preserves across Africa and Asia. For better or for worse, A.I. is now part of our everyday lives. In his Casa Up Close lecture at Casa Romantica, Professor Tambe will share with attendees the positive potential that it can contribute to the wellbeing of society, from effectively spreading health information in lowresource communities to assisting national park patrols in preventing poaching activities. His presentation will also share some of the exciting new projects that his team at CAIS is working on to make the world a better place. Casa Up Close - How Can A.I. Be Used For Social Good? will happen on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at 7:00 PM in the Main Salon at Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens. General admission is $12; Members admission is $10. Tickets may be purchased online at https:// www.casaromantica.org/event/casaup-close-how-can-a-i-be-used-forsocial-good/ by telephone at (949) 498-2139, or in person at the front entrance box office. Casa Up Close Series Casa Romantica’s Casa Up Close series invites guest speakers from all over the United States to engage with the community. Topics span a variety of interests, including arts, education, astronomy, biology, history, and political science. Previous speakers have included Dr. James Doti, the President Emeritus of Chapman University; Prof. Irwin Chemerinsky, the Dean of the School of Law at UC Irvine; Dr. John Mulchaey, the Director of Carnegie Observatories; Douglas Kirkland, a world renowned photographer; Dana Gioia, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts and poet-laureate; and Kenneth
Professor Milind Tambe Khachigian, presidential speech writer for Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Try this protein-packed substitute to make lunchtime more nutritious
Cottage cheese is having a moment. Nutritionists and health-minded individuals have discovered that the dairy case staple can actually unlock a lot of mealtime solutions, especially when it comes to remaking recipes with a creamy base, such as tuna salad and veggie dip. Simply swap the mayonnaise, cream cheese or sour cream with high-protein cottage cheese, and it’s pretty easy to pull off a higher-protein and lower-calorie version of your lunchtime favorites, says Amy Gorin, a registered dietitian nutritionist and writer in New York City. “In many of these recipes, cottage cheese works beautifully, because it helps these delicious foods keep that creamy texture while decreasing the calories and saturated fat - and adding filling protein,” Gorin says. “It’s one of those foods that was hiding in plain sight all these years.” For best results, start with a protein-packed brand of cottage cheese. Gorin always recommends Muuna Cottage Cheese to her clients, because its Lowfat Plain variety delivers a rich and creamy texture, plus it’s high in protein (14-19g per serving), is a good source of calcium and also contains potassium. So look at your go-to breakfast, lunch and snack recipes with new eyes, grab your blender and get creative. To get you inspired, here are five easy ways you can make the cottage cheese swap and give yourself a protein boost without going hungry. Lunch salad update Many of us have said no to delicious and classic lunch salads we love, Page 16
because mayo can add fat and calories. Turn to cottage cheese to make over your favorite lunches, and you can start enjoying things like tuna salad and potato salad, plus you’ll love that boost of protein. On toast Simplify your lunch hour and use cottage cheese as a creamy base for your favorite whole-grain toast, and then stack on yummy, vitaminpacked extras, like salad greens and sliced mangos, or even strawberries and avocado. A Greek yogurt-cup alternative For a quick on-the-go snack or lunch side, Muuna has reimagined cottage cheese into single-serve cups with real pieces of fruit on the bottom, packed with 15 grams of protein, including strawberry, blueberry, pineapple, peach and mango. Smoothies reimagined Swap out the yogurt and try using cottage cheese as a protein base for your favorite smoothie recipe. What you’ll have is a thick and creamy breakfast, likely with more protein than sugar. Dip without the guilt Kids and adults love how flavorful, creamy dips and dressings can liven up cut-up vegetables like carrots and broccoli. Sub in cottage cheese for mayo or sour cream to lower the calories and fat - and to amp up the protein and make the snack more filling and fueling. This super-simple, reimagined ranch dressing not only adds flavor to your crudites, it brings protein power to your lunchbox or your child’s. QUARTER PAGE COLOR This month I have terrific low prices on quarter page full color ad packages. Plus you can choose to either pre pay or pay as you go. But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in San Clemente, Talega, Dana Point? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like these reasonably priced local newspapers which are received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners. This advertising costs you far less money. These five local newspapers are attractive, effective and affordable. Let’s talk today!
