Finding the perfect Valentine’s Day gift has been a challenge for ages. This year, make the gift-giving process seamless by watching for hints, reading between the lines and considering one of
these sure-to-please gift ideas. Put a sparkle in her eye. According to the survey, the majority of women consider jewelry to be the most covetable gift, yet 77 percent normally receive flowers or chocolates. Read between the lines and give her a desirable gift, like pieces from the PANDORA Jewelry Valentine’s Day collection. From stacking rings to gorgeous pendants, the Lock Your Promise and Explosion of Love collections are full of high-quality, hand-crafted,

stylish pieces that nearly any woman would be thrilled to receive this year. It’s the thought that counts – really. Most women agree that a thoughtful gift, not the most expensive one, is a winner. Something that shows you really know her can send a strong message. For example, if you decide to give flowers, instead of defaulting to the usual dozen red roses, think about her favorite bloom, or choose a flower that may have special meaning in her life. Make time the treasure. A busy pace of life means that there’s rarely enough time to spend together without distractions. A gift doesn’t have to be a physical object, but rather an experience you can share together. Plan a date night away from home, enroll in a class to learn a new hobby together or make a point to simply enjoy each other’s company. Simple and sentimental. Even if sappy isn’t your standard MO, Valentine’s Day is the perfect occasion to get a little sentimental. Give a copy of the movie from your first date, or revisit a restaurant that holds special meaning in your relationship. Make it meaningful and you’ll see how a simple idea can earn a big response. When in doubt, ask. If you’re out of ideas or inspiration, ask your beloved what she’d enjoy most. That’s not to say you must forgo the element of surprise. Remember that just because she suggests jewelry doesn’t mean she knows exactly what you’ll choose. Find more tips for Valentine’s Day gift ideas at Pandora.net.

Capistrano Unified Announces 2018 Teachers of the Year Three local teachers recognized at surprise classroom celebrations
Three Capistrano Unified School District teachers have been named “2018 Teachers of the Year” for their outstanding commitment to engage students in learning. The winners were notified of the recognition during surprise visits from District officials, school colleagues and friends and family. D i s t r i c t B o a r d o f Tr u s t e e s President Martha McNicholas, Vice President Gila Jones, Trustee Amy Hanacek, Trustee Judy Bullockus, Superintendent Kirsten Vital and Capistrano Unified Educators Association President Sally White were present for the celebrations, and congratulated the winning teachers – Carol Cutkomp, Susan Peterson and David Pino – for their unyielding dedication to students. “We are honored to recognize these fantastic teachers who are dedicated to student success,” said President McNicholas. “Not only are Ms. Cutkomp, Ms. Peterson and Mr. Pino fostering academic achievement in their classrooms, they are preparing students for success in our communities as well. They are wonderful examples of the teachers we have in our District.” The winning educators were previously recognized as Teacher of the Year at their respective schools, and then advanced as candidates for the District’s 2018 Teacher of the Year honor. The three teachers now advance to the Orange County Teacher of the Year competition later this year. The 2018 Teachers of the Year are profiled below. Elementary School Teacher of the Year: Carol Cutkomp Carol Cutkomp has been a teacher at Tijeras Creek Elementary School for 18 years and brings 35 years of teaching experience to Capistrano Page 6
Unified School District. Colleagues know her to be a dedicated mentor who continues to support students after they graduate from her classroom. “I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand Ms. Cutkomp’s perseverance and rock-solid dedication since the first day I walked onto campus,” says Tijeras Creek Principal Diann Buckingham. “During her many years at our school she has written grants that have purchased over $10,000 in materials and technology.” Mrs. Cutkomp posts two simple, but powerful, words on her front board: “respect” and “honesty.” She works to make students feel comfortable taking risks and helps them realize that failure is a springboard, not an ending point. “Students must feel comfortable collaborating with their peers without fear of rejection,” she says. “There is nothing more satisfying than seeing scholars work together to solve problems.” Middle School Teacher of the Year: Susan Peterson For 28 years, Susan Peterson has taught social science at Niguel Hills Middle School. She is always open to learning new strategies and focuses on the success of ALL her students. She also embraces all things technology to teach her students and keep their interest in learning. “Classrooms that function the same way as they did when we were in school are not the answer for teens today who live in a rapidly changing world of bits and bytes,” she says. “As educators, we need to change the way we teach so we can keep our students in school and prepare them for a future that we can only imagine.” Mrs. Peterson often opens her

classroom to students at lunch as a safe, welcoming space. She is also recognized as a mentor for students who are interested in the education field. “Mrs. Peterson is a master teacher who has mentored many student teachers into successful teaching careers, several of who are on our campus today,” says Niguel Hill Assistant Principal Todd Amon. “Whether it is with curriculum development, classroom management or implementing needed intervention and enrichment, her mentees have grown into master teachers themselves and our students have reaped the benefits.” High School Teacher of the Year: David Pino David Pino has taught at Junipero Serra Alternative High School for eight years and is also an adjunct instructor at Saddleback Community College. He strives to motivate and prepare youth to be the best they can be academically, socially and emotionally, along a path of life-long learning. “I always encourage my students
to be their own heroes,” he says. “When I hear students complain about politicians and the government not working for the people, I challenge them to do something about it. As a government teacher, I offer extra credit for students who register others to vote.” Pino is quick to put programs in place to benefit students. Where he sees a need, he makes changes and implements courses or after school programs that allow our students to grow and thrive in ways they would not have otherwise. “Mr. Pino’s compassion and dedication to his students make him a true standout. Our students often have tumultuous lives and come to us with a history of schoolrelated challenges,” says colleague Becky Tran. “His empathetic, yet tough-love, approach shows he truly understands their plight, but holds them accountable at the same time. Students share a love and respect for him that is evident when they flock to his classroom at lunch, after school, or long after they have left his tutelage.”

M U SI C C O M ES TO LIFE AT SE G ERSTRO M C ENTER IN ANATO M Y OF THE PIANO FOR B E G INNERS
Pianist Will Pickvance Photos by Nico Bernardi Will asks Father Christmas for a spaceship, but he gets a piano instead. As he tries to work out how he might use it to reach the moon, Will is drawn into a fantastic pianistic adventure that takes him to a cave where he meets Johann Sebastian Bach, is introduced to an ill-tempered Ludwig von Beethoven and jams with ‘Fats’ Waller. With music, humor and fascinating stories about the piano and legendary composers and musicians who used it to create glorious music, Will discovers that, through music, you can go anywhere you want. Anatomy of the Piano (for
beginners) and Will’s amazing journey come to Segerstrom Center for the Arts on February 17 and 18, 2018 in Samueli Theater. Performances are at 1 p.m. The Sunday performance will be ASL interpreted. Tickets for Anatomy of the Piano (for beginners) are $20 and are available online at SCFTA.org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. The Center offers many services for patrons with disabilities including removable wheelchair locations, binoculars and assistive listening devices. To learn more visit SCFTA. org/accessibilityinformation.
Audiences are encouraged to arrive one hour before the performance for free creative activities. The Center’s Education Department offers these enriching experiences to provide young people and their families with more opportunities to play together creatively. Studies show that this is critical in helping to develop the ability to think and problem solve. Will Pickvance is more than anything else, a piano player. An improvising pianist by make-up, he practices Bach Fugues, Beethoven sonatas and Brahms intermezzi, not with the intention of performing these great works, but rather to feed a neverending quest for musical vocabulary and depth in his own inventions. He cannot recall not being able to play the piano and cannot imagine what it must be like not to be able to play the piano. His shows have toured to the UK, Australia, Malaysia and China. Segerstrom Center’s 2017 – 2018 Family Series continues with The Gruffalo (March 24-25, 2018), Shh! We Have a Plan (April 14-15, 2018) and Mr. Popper’s Penguins (April 22, 2018). Segerstrom Center for the Arts applauds its corporate partners including Kia Motors America, Official Automotive Partner; United Airlines, Official Airline; and Omaha Steaks International, Official Fine Food Retailer. Parenting OC is the Media Partner of the Family Series. Segerstrom Center’s Education Programs Segerstrom Center’s Education and Community Programs Department offers a variety of programs to students from elementary school through the university level, teachers,
arts administrators and individuals who simply want to broaden their own experiences, but not in a structure that is strictly academic. These programs achieve two especially important objectives. First, they develop the audiences of the future. Second, they integrate the arts into the standard curriculum and enhance learning, creative thinking, cognitive and social skills. The Education and Community Programs Department works hand-in-hand with a number of boards of education, providing support and assistance to ensure the success and effectiveness of the Center’s programs. The popular Family Series engages, enchants and inspires youngsters with the magic of live performance. International artists combine music, dance and theater that can be enjoyed by the entire family, creating experiences that instill an appreciation for the arts and create lifelong memories. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is an acclaimed arts institution as well as a beautiful multi-disciplinary cultural campus. It is committed to supporting artistic excellence, offering unsurpassed experiences and to engaging the entire community in new and exciting ways through the unique power of live performance and a diverse array of inspiring artsbased education and community engagement programs. 600 Town Center Drive Costa Mesa, CA 92626 T (714) 556-2121 F (714) 556-8984 SCFTA.org

Segerstrom Candlelight Concert at Julia and George Argyros plaza
The San Clemente News
George and Julia Argyros with Michael Bolton Photos by Doug Gifford The event of 2017 that I always look forward to is the Segerstrom Center for the Arts Candlelight Concert – held at the Segerstrom Center. Every year, they dazzle us with outstanding musical guests, fine dining and an after party that’s just top notch. This year, starlight and the Chicago skyline surrounded guests during this year’s spectacular 44th annual Candlelight Concert. One of the Center’s oldest traditions, Candlelight Concert exceeded previous Candlelight Concert records, raising more than $1.6 million and attended by 460 people. Segerstrom Center’s new Board Chairman, Mark Perry and his wife Carol chaired the event, which featured multi-Grammy® Awardwinner Michael Bolton and Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame band Chicago. Bolton opened his set with the song “Stand by Me” which was dedicated to Julia and George Argyros. Chicago played their hits which kept everyone on the dance floor dancing and singing along. Julia and George Argyros were honored guests who were celebrated and cheered for their generous gift to build the Center’s beautiful new Julianne and George Argyros Plaza and the Center for Dance and Innovation. Ronnie Allumbaugh, Sandi Jackson and Sandi Simon were honorary co-chairs. Décor was inspired by the band of course and, coincidentally, became a nod to Chairwoman Perry who hails from the Windy City. The Plaza Vista Middle School Choir serenaded guests as they arrived, standing in front Segerstrom Center’s new Board Chairman Mark Perry with Marta of custom marquee suggestive of Chicago’s famous theater marquees. Guests dined on the Segerstrom Hall stage and enjoyed a chilled Pee Wee Bhathal, Lisa and Jim Merage Potato and Smoked Salmon Salad with cucumber, creme fraiche dill and salmon caviar for starters. The main dish was a double header of porcini-rubbed filet mignon with roasted root vegetable ragout, and horseradish cauliflower crème, red wine jus and roosted fig AND a white wine-poached sole Veronique with green grapes, lemon braised fennel with champagne foam and sauce vin blanc. Oh, and the dessert was Patina’s take on the Chicago classic with golden sponge cake, white chocolate Chantilly, banana cream and passion gel. After dinner, we danced shoulder-to-shoulder to Chicago’s mega-hits. This year, women were given flat comfy shoes to wear so after an evening of wearing high heels – it was a relief to have a cozy pair of shoes to dance in! Once the music stopped, guests made their way to the Kia Valet Lounge via the new circular staircase from the hall’s Orchestra Terrace to the Argyros Plaza below. Sweet treats, hot chocolate and authentic Chicago hotdogs made for tasty midnight snacks. This year’s coup de Candlelight theatre? A gentle snowfall as people left Segerstrom Hall and entered the Argyros Plaza. Mark Perry noted, “We’re honored to recognize Julia and George Argyros at this year’s Candlelight Concert. Their visionary support is helping us to serve all of the dynamic and diverse communities of Orange County. The Julianne and George Argyros Plaza and Center for Dance and Innovation enables us to offer new and innovative community engagement and education programs that complement the expanding array of world-class performances that the Center presents. The funds raised by Candlelight Concert will support all of Jim and Angela Hsu with Betty and S.L. Huang these important programs as the Center begins an exciting and bold next act.” Proceeds from Candlelight Concert support the Center’s artistic programming, which brings the largest array of the finest artists and performances to Orange County, and community engagement and education programs that serve more than 300,000 young people and students each year. In fact, since opening in 1986, more than 17 million people have attended performances and more than 6 million children and families have participated in various community and education programs. The inaugural Candlelight Concert, which raised money to build a major performing arts center in Orange County, was held in a vacant Kresge five-anddime. It was transformed into an elegant ballroom with the use of candles. Since then, the annual gala has been called Candlelight Concert, with entertainment by celebrated artists. These have included Diana Krall, Diana Ross, Frankie Valli, Jay Leno, Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett, Kenny Loggins, Harry Belafonte, Johnny Mathis, Donna Summer, Smokey Robinson, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Broadway stars Kristen Chenoweth, Sutton Foster as well as many others. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is an acclaimed arts institution as well as a beautiful multi-disciplinary cultural campus. It is committed to supporting artistic excellence on all its stages, offering unsurpassed experiences, and to engaging the entire community in new and exciting ways through the unique power of live performance and a diverse array of inspiring programs. Marine Expeditionary Unit Exercise training event Photos by Bill Casper Marine Expeditionary Unit Exercise (MEUEX) is the first opportunity for the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to conduct integrated training following their January 2018 composite. The MEUEX focuses on refining Combat Operations Center set-up and command and control procedures across the Marine Air Ground Task Force. Ultimately, MEUEX prepares the Fighting Thineenth to synchronize and execute training and missions during the rest of their pre-deployment training and summer deployment to the Western Pacific. Incorporated into the Marine Expeditionary Unit Exercise are raids training packages which take place across various training areas at Camp Pendleton, California. These packages include mechanized, air, and motorized raid training. Expeditionary Operations Training Group. Amphibious Raids Branch, oversees the raid assault training for 3rd Battalion, 1 st Marines, the Battalion Landing Team for the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit. From January 29 to February 9, Kilo Company, 113, the mechanized raid force is conducting training to refine their tactics, techniques. and procedures in order to enhance their ability to conduct expeditionary operations while deployed. MEUEX is the first oftive pre-deployment training exercises the MEU will conduct before its 2018 summer deployment. Information about the 13th MEV Sea-based Forward Presence. As a sea-based force, the MEU remains independent of host nation pons and airfields, basing agreements, over-flight restrictions, and political sensitivities associated with landbased forces. This freedom of action and inherent force protection allow for unparalleled access to the littorals of the world and beyond. ARG-MEU presence signals U.S. commitment and helps to shape and promote regional stability. Expeditionary in Nature. The U.S. Marine Corps is specifically organized for rapid deployment and conduct of operations and the MEU is its most “expeditionary unit. The MEU’s ability to rapidly task organize and operate in austere environments affords the Combatant Commander a force with greater flexibility than more conventional units. Crisis Action Planning and Response. Each MEV, along with its associated Navy partners, conducts extensive training in the Rapid Response Planning Process (R2P2). lbrough the use of R2P2, the MEV is capable of planning and commencing execution of se lected tactical operations within six hours of receipt of a mission. Combined Arms Integration. Each MEU conducts extensive integrated supporting anns training and is able to coordinate surface and air fires drawn from across the joint force. MEVs deploy with the ability to plan, coordinate, and control fires in the
loint and Combined environment. Marine Air-Ground Task Forces have long provided the United States with a broad spectrum of response options when U.S. and allied interests have been threatened and in non-combat situations that require instant response to crisis. Se lective, timely and credible commitment of air-ground units have, on many occasions, helped bring stability to a region and sent signals worldwide to aggressors that the United States is willing to defend its interests, and it is able to do so with a significantly powerful force on extremely short notice. The Marine Expeditionary Unit is the smallest of the MAGTFs and comprises about 2,400 Marines and Sai lors. Its major elements are the command element, the ground combat element, the aviation combat element, and the logistics combat element. The command element comprises the commanding officer and supporting staff - about 250 Marines and Sailors. It provides the overall command and control essential for effective planning and execution of operations and synchronizes the actions of each element within the MEU. Skill sets falling under the command element include: administration, intelligence, operations, logistics and embarkation, communications, legal and communication strategy and operations. The ground combat element is built around an infantry battalion and provides the overland combat power for the MEU. Assets inherent within the standard infantry battalion include: medium and heavy machine guns, mortars, combined anti-anuor teams and scout snipers. While assigned to the MEU, the unit, designated a Battalion Landing Team, is reinforced with light armored reconnaissance vehicles, tanks, artillery, combat engineers and assault amphibian vehicles. The air combat element is a composite squadron that provides the MEU medium to heavy lift capability, assault support and close air support (CAS). Its assets include: MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, CH-53E Super Stallion heavy lift helicopters, AH-IZ Viper helicopters, UH-I Y Venom helicopters and F-35B Lightning. With a force strength of approximately 5OO, the ACE also includes personnel that conduct control of aircraft and missi les, aviation ground support, air craft maintenance/support and aviation logistics/supply. The logistics combat element, about 250 Marines and Sailors strong, provides combat support such as supply, maintenance, transportation, explosive ordnance disposal, military police, water production and distribution, engineering, medical and dental services, fuel storage and distribution, and other services to the deployed MEU. The LCE gives the MEU the abi lity to support itself for 15 days in austere expeditionary environments. The San Clemente News

Healthy tips for your Heart!
Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna February is American Heart Month and Cardiovascular Disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, with one in three deaths caused by heart disease and stroke reminds Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. With more than 2 million heart attacks and strokes a year, and 800,000 deaths, it’s important you start taking some preventive measures one step at a time: • Stop smoking. Quitting smoking is the single most important thing a person can do to live longer. • Cut down on salt. Too much salt can cause high blood pressure, which increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease. • Watch your diet. A healthy diet can help to reduce the risk of developing heart disease, and can also help increase the chances of survival after a heart attack. • Monitor your alcohol. Too much alcohol can damage the heart muscle, increase blood pressure and also lead to weight gain. • Get active. The heart is a muscle and it needs exercise to keep fit so it can pump blood efficiently round Page 16
your body with each heartbeat. Check with your Doctor first before starting a rigorous exercise program. • Manage your weight. Carrying a lot of extra weight as fat can greatly affect your health and increases the risk of life-threatening conditions such as coronary heart disease and diabetes. • Get your blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked. The higher your blood pressure, the shorter your life expectancy. Learn to manage your stress levels. • Check your family history. Many times our past (family history) predicts our future. Make sure you can recognize the early signs of coronary heart disease. Tightness or discomfort in the chest, neck, arm or stomach that comes on when you exert yourself but goes away with rest may be the first sign of angina, which can lead to a heart attack if left untreated. QUARTER PAGE COLOR This month I have terrific low prices on quarter page full color ad packages. Plus you can choose to either pre pay or pay as you go. But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in San Clemente, Talega, Dana Point? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like these reasonably priced local newspapers which are received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners. This advertising costs you far less money. These five local newspapers are attractive, effective and affordable. Let’s talk today!

We’d like to share some actual quotes from local San Clemente area realtors: “SOLD THE SAME DAY that the ad appeared in the San Clemente News, SOLD THE SAME WEEKEND that the ad appeared in the San Clemente News, BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the San Clemente News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in San Clemente. 8. Why do San Clemente Readers read the San Clemente News? In the year 2006, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated (approved) The San Clemente News as the official newspaper for San Clemente. That’s why you regularly see stories about the San Clemente City Council, Chamber of Commerce, and prominent San Clemente people in the San Clemente News. So when you advertise In the San Clemente News you get the best of San Clemente readers.
