This tradition was started by Father O’Sullivan in the 1920’s at Mission San Juan Capistrano, historic California landmark and home of the swallows, and is carried each year on March 19th. B r o w n , Professor of Biological Sciences at University of Tulsa Great Stone Church Ruins – Location of the Swallows Nest Reenactment Renowned Cliff Swallows Expert Dr. Charles R. Brown, Professor of Biological Sciences at University of Tulsa, has studied more than 200,000 cliff swallows over the last 29 years. He has written numerous works on his studies of cliff swallows including Swallows Summer and
Coloniality in the Cliff Swallows. Dr. Brown has been the consulting expert on cliff swallows for Mission San Juan Capistrano for eight years. Under his advisement, Mission San Juan Capistrano conducted the Swallows Vocalization Experiment for four years, an initiative to lure the swallows to the historic site through amplified courtship calls. A new project under his direction, the Swallows Nest Reenactment Exhibit, was introduced at St. Joseph’s Day in 2016. The project still stands in place today to demonstrate what the nests looked like historically on the Great Stone Church ruins. Read more on both these projects below. There will be a presentation in the field by Dr. Brown on at 2:00 p.m. on St. Joseph’s Day for the public to learn more about the famous swallows of Capistrano and the Swallows Nest Reenactment from the expert himself. Meet at the Great Stone Church Ruins for this special presentation. A 20-minute informational presentation will be followed by the opportunity for Q&A with Dr. Brown. Nest Reenactment Exhibit Dr. Charles Brown at the Nest Reenactment Exhibit, 2016 Cliff swallows expert Dr. Charles Brown, a professor of biological sciences at the University of Tulsa, implemented Phase I — the Vocalization Project — in 2012, in which recorded courtship calls were played through a speaker on the Mission grounds to lure the cliff swallows that were flying overhead. Phase II of the project, the Swallows Nest
Reenactment Exhibit, was introduced in March of 2016. According to Dr. Brown, anecdotal evidence suggests the vocalization playbacks at least occasionally bring in passing cliff swallows that fly over the site but do not stay to nest. The next step is to increase the stimulus being presented to these passing birds by creating the nest wall. Research has shown that cliff swallows prefer to re-use existing nests where possible, as this saves time and energy in building a nest from scratch. Once the birds notice the plaster nests and begin using them, spillover or additional settling birds likely will lead them to building nests on the walls of the Ruins of the Great Stone Church. And once nests are built, the artificial arch would no longer be needed. In recognizing the national goals for the proper care and treatment of the historic landmark, Mission San Juan Capistrano will ensure that this temporary experiment recommended by Dr. Brown will not obstruct sensitive views or adversely impact the historic grounds and buildings in any way. Heroes Hall will present A Salute to Women on March 22 a special event in honor of Women’s History Month Heroes Hall is presenting a special event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, in celebration of National Women’s History Month. A Salute to Women will honor our female veterans and active military. The public is invited to attend a wine and cheese reception, hear from guest speakers, and embark on guided tours at Heroes Hall, OC Fair & Event Center’s veterans museum and education center. Rather than recording the violence of military confrontation, Millett highlights the times between conflict, when it is safe to show intimacy and humanity. St. Patrick’s Day in America and Ireland Before doing my recent research on St. Patrick’s Parades, I assumed, as I imagine that many people do, that the mother of all St. Patrick’s Day parades must be in Ireland. In studying the history of the celebrations I learned that my assumption was incorrect. In fact, the “original” St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held in New York, 16 years before the Declaration of Independence was signed. The tradition of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day parades began as a response to oppression. An English law forbid the Catholic’s parades, but allowed a religious procession after Mass. So, on this technicality, the Irish Catholics got a permit for a church procession. The St. Patrick’s procession would leave from the Cathedral after Mass. Therefore the original parades were actually an act of defiance. While the parades have become an accepted part of the mainstream in the United States, historically, that has not been the case. There are several cities that started having parades in the early years, only to suspend them during times of hardship. The times of hardship included anti Irish sentiment, two World Wars and the Great Depression. Up until the mid nineteenth century, the majority of Irish immigrants in America were members of the Protestant middle class. The 1845, the Great Potato Famine hit Ireland and close to a million poor, uneducated Catholic Irish started pouring into the United States. The Irish immigrants were despised when they first immigrated, and had trouble finding even menial jobs. They soon began to realize that their great numbers gave them political power and they began to
organize. Their voting block became known as the “green machine”. The St. Patrick’s’ Day parades became a show of strength for Irish Americans and a “must attend” event for politicians. As the parades became part of the mainstream society, Protestants celebrated alongside the Catholics and they all enjoyed the party. What started as a religious procession became a celebration with music, dancing and green beer. St. Patrick’s Day and green beer have become synonymous. It’s traditional in many cities for everyone to go on a pub crawl after the parade and drink copious quantities of green beer, which is simply regular beer with some green food dye added. While the St. Patrick’s Day party reigned in American, the Irish observed St Patrick’s Day as a holy day. St. Patrick’s Day had been a solemn holy day for centuries. As a holy day, the saloons were closed, which was the opposite of the parties that occurred in America. St. Patrick lived over 1600 years ago. He had endured a turbulent life. He was captured and enslaved at the age of 16. He worked as a slave in Ireland, part of that time working as a shepherd. He escaped and became a man of God, entering the priesthood. He was educated in a monastery in France. He was made a Bishop and was returned to Ireland, this time to work as a missionary and convert the pagans to Christianity. He was successful in converting many people to Christianity. The legend of St. Patrick is that he led the snakes out of Ireland. However, as snakes are not indigenous to Ireland, it is believed that
the legend is symbolic. Most believe that the snakes of legend were actually symbolic of the pagans that were converted. St. Patrick is credited with using a shamrock to explain the holy trinity to pagans. Thus the shamrock is symbolic of the holy day. In 1995, Ireland set up a St. Patrick’s Day Festival, with the goal of capitalizing on the popularity of the celebration and to encourage tourism to Ireland. The First St. Patrick Festival was held on March 7, 1996. In 1997 the event was a 3 day festival. This year the five day festival will feature 4,000 performers, with one millions people celebrating. Events include music, street theater, family carnivals, comedy, street performances, dance, a treasure hunt, night spectacles, and many celebrants. In Ireland the St. Patrick’s Day Festival is an event that draws locals and tourists. The country, with it’s long history of honoring St. Patrick and his good works sounds like a great party. On the other hand, if you want to go to the original St. Patrick’s Day Parade, New York is the place.

“Love Grows by Giving” event Raises Over $120,000 Nonprofit Wayfinders (formerly Community Service Programs) hosted nearly 450 wine lovers and humanitarians to help raise over $120,000 to benefit Wayfinders’ Huntington Beach Youth Shelter, a safe haven for homeless, runaway, abused and at-risk youth, during its eighth annual “Love Grows by Giving” Wine Tasting fundraiser at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa. The evening offered unique wine tastings, beer samplings, live music and an exceptional culinary experience from local fine dining restaurants. This year, multiple wines were served from various winery’s including Kendall Jackson, Bianchi, Rodney Strong Vineyards, Main Street Wine Company and more. On top of this, Kettle One Vodka presented colorful cocktails, which were a big hit with the guests. Watertable, Duke’s, Slapfish and Ola restaurants also had booths at the event, making great pairings with the selected wines and vodka. Dennis Kuhl, chairman of Angels Baseball and a longtime supporter of Wayfinders, served as event chair. “Our services at the Wayfinders’ Huntington Beach Youth Shelter wouldn’t be possible without the outpouring of support from local businesses and community members who have helped make this year’s Love Grows by Giving fundraiser a huge success,” says Elsa Greenfield, program director of Wayfinders’ Huntington Beach Youth Shelter. “We are deeply grateful that we’re able to continue providing a shelter that youth can call home and offer valuable resources to children in need.” Live and silent auctions included prizes such as a two-night stay in a Presidential Suite at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa with dinner for two and a VIP welcome amenity (a $5,800 value). The trained staff has an excellent success rate of reuniting children with their families, over 90 percent, by finding solutions to their very complex problems. The Shelter’s mission runs much deeper than just a place to stay, as they provide a place for homeless, runaway and at-risk youth 24/7, 365 days a year. As emergency crisis and intervention programs, the Wayfinders’ Huntington Beach Youth Shelter aims to achieve: family strengthening and reunification, homeless prevention, diversion of at-risk youth from the juvenile justice system, and school drop-out prevention. In addition to providing youth with a safe haven and protection from the dangers of the streets, the shelters also provide youth and their families with professional comprehensive services including individual, group and family therapy, academic support, job/career readiness, life skills and aftercare. Every day throughout Orange County, people find hope after trauma. They don’t simply survive; they find ways to heal – all with the help of Wayfinders, formerly called Community Service Programs. Their ten model programs guide over 120,000 abused children, crime victims, struggling families, acting-out adolescents and people needing mediation services annually. St. Patrick’s Day Recipes: Easy Dips, Corned Beef Cabbage, Potatoes, Green Drinks and More By Slate Stone The key to fun and festive St. Patrick’s Day feast is to have lots of tasty food with lots of green color. You can accomplish this with some ready made green treats such as serving up lime sherbet or sorbet sprinkled with green sugar. Other cold green St. Patrick’s Day treats could include Pistachio ice cream, Mint chocolate chip ice cream, green koolaid or limeade, or any cake with green food coloring added to perk up the frosting. Use limes in your St. Patrick’s Day Recipes as garnishes. Use mint leaves and organic green lettuces in your St. Patrick’s Day recipes as plate garnishes also. Think green green green for St. Patrick’s Day recipes! Perhaps serve a platter of sliced kiwi with little dabs of whipped cream. Honey dew melon drizzled with Crème de menthe liqueur. Key Lime Pie certainly has hints of green! Instead of fresh squeezed lemonade make your St. Patrick’s Day menu include freshly squeezed lime aid. Irish Soda Bread Spinach Artichoke Dip This hot dip recipe works well with Irish soda bread. Here’s how you make it: 1 (8 ounces) package of cream cheese, softened 1 package ( 10 ounces) frozen chopped spinach, thawed, drained
1 jar (7.5 ounces) marinated artichoke hearts, drained, chopped 1 cup Mozzarella Cheese, shredded 1/3 cup Parmesan Cheese, grated Directions: Spread cream cheese into bottom of 9 inch metal or disposable aluminum pie plate. Set aside. In food processor, mix spinach, artichokes, and mozzarella cheese until creamy and well blended. Pour mixture into pie plate and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Bake at 350 degrees in preheated oven for 20 minutes. Serve on a platter surrounded by cut pieces of Irish Soda Bread. Garnish edge of plate with fresh baby spinach leaves to give a wreath like appearance. St. Patrick’s Day Limeaid Recipe 4 medium sized limes 3/4 cup white sugar 2 quarts cold water Directions: Juice the limes in an electric citrus juicer for maximum juice squeezed. Don’t use lime juice concentrate, using fresh lime juice is the key to a great St. Patrick’s Day recipe for limeade. Pour the lime juice into a 2 quart pitcher and stir in sugar. Then add water as you continue stirring. Thoroughly chill before serving or serve immediately
over ice. Tips: You can serve limeade in a punch bowl and garnish with thinly sliced limes, just double or triple this St. Patrick’s Day recipe. To make any St. Patrick’s Day party a success, be sure to have some corned beef and potatoes and cabbage and lots of it! The aroma alone will contribute to the St. Patrick’s Day spirit!
