Y o d e r f r e e Su n d a y s i n 2 0 1 8 a t Casa Romantica this sunday Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens, a nonprofit southern California cultural center, has accepted a gift from Ms. June Yoder of San Clemente, CA to continue offering D. Yoder Family Sundays in 2018. D. Yoder Family Sundays, which began in January 2017, enables free admission for all visitors to Casa Romantica between 10 am and 2 pm on the first Sunday of each month for activities and a noon-time program thematically based on Casa Romantica’s Casa Captivating programs for all ages. Visitors also enjoy the beauty of Casa Romantica’s treasured ocean bluff home and gardens built by San Clemente’s founder, Ole Hanson. D. Yoder Family Sundays were established to honor the memory of David Yoder, the son of Paul and June Yoder. David passed away in 2011 at the age of 46, leaving his wife Karen and children Molly and Lucas. Ms. Yoder has made significant contributions to develop Casa Romantica’s programs and property, including the dedication of $25,000 in 2007 to the Casa Romantica central courtyard garden (named the Paul A. Yoder Courtyard in memory of her husband). The $7,500 that she has now given two years in a row covers the operating costs of Casa Romantica on D. Yoder Family Sundays so that the institution does not sustain a loss without its usual admission. Twelve D. Yoder Family Sundays occurred over the course of 2017 with a total of 3,063 visitors: an average of 250 each day. “Providing free access to our resources of art, history and culture is part of Casa Romantica’s mission to provide arts and culture for everyone,
and we are thrilled that Ms. June Yoder, through her philanthropy, has made this a possibility,” says Casa Romantica Executive Director Berenika Schmitz. The January 2018 D. Yoder Family Sundays will include a special performance by piano prodigy Vijay Venkatesh, a native of Orange County whose talent has earned him Grand Prizes in numerous national competitions. The artist, who is currently studying his Master’s Degree from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music as a recipient of the Barbara and David Jacobs Fellowship, will perform works from Chopin, Liszt, Beethoven, and Granados at 12:00 PM at the Grand Piano in Casa Romantica’s Main Salon. The concert itself
is underwritten by Dr. Ron and Margaret Redmond, who sponsor the annual Casa Romantica Music Festival and Academy. A f u l l o v e r v i e w o f D . Yo d e r Family Sundays events and miniprograms will be available online at CasaRomantiuca.org/Calendar and onsite at the Casa Romantica entrance beginning in early 2018. Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens is located at 415 Avenida Granada, San Clemente, CA 92672. Hours: Tuesday—Thursday 11 am—4 pm; Friday—Sunday 10am—2pm; closed Mondays and holidays. General admission is $5; Casa Members and children under age 13 visit for FREE. For more information, call (949) 498-2139 or visit CasaRomantica.org

‘ The Money Pit’ Movie Home!
One of the most infamous homes in movie history is for sale. The Money Pit home on Long Island is for sale. Not the movie version as seen in the 1986 movie with Tom Hanks and Shelley Long but the real life version, more a candidate for House Beautiful than Disaster Survival Magazine. More popular than ever before is the trend of flipping an investment house or buying an aging one stuck in another decade with the idea of turning it into your dream home. Anyone who is mesmerized by the idea of restoring an old house should first watch The Money Pit. Though exaggerated as filmdom will do to hold an audience’s attention - not so quick. Take another look. Tom and Shelley (as Walter and Anna in the movie) might have fallen through floors and set the house on fire due to worn-out wiring while we howled with mirth, but many do-it-yourselfers are falling through boards and igniting wiring every day, but their howling comes from anguish. It was easy to see why Walter and Anna fell in love with The Money Pit home’s potential. The house, that in real life was owned by Olympic gold medalist Eric Ridder, was grand at 14,000 square feet and wonderfully located in a preferred enclave on Long Island, close to Manhattan. It had a show-stopping entry with grand staircase and large formal rooms opening to the left and the right. It had all the attributes of the Gilded Age lady it was, even if the “lady” were more “bag” than gilded. They were able to grab it for only $200,000 and felt they had managed to steal the bargain of the century. Life was good. At first. Throughout the film we vicariously lived the redo process with them laughing at their inexperience and foibles. Fortunately, the destructive mess made out of Page 6
the house by the contractors was filmed on studio sound stages and not in the actual mansion. When the couple managed to get through the film’s restoration that lasted over four months instead of the two weeks they were promised, it had almost destroyed their relationship as it does so many in real life. But they bounced back and ended up getting married standing in front of their dream house. After the film crew finally left, the house still needed massive repairs. Fortunately, a real life couple came along and bought the 1898 mansion named Northway, and though it is doubtful they paid anywhere as low as the $200,000 film version for the 5.5-acre estate, they immediately got to work on the house the right way. It took four years of hard work by the best designers, decorators and contractors to turn it into a jewel box that script writers and set designers for The Money Pit could never have imagined. Now for sale as its best possible self, every detail has been addressed from its elaborate moldings to its gleaming ebony wood floors to the formal gardens and the soft sound of fountains. The 23-room home has seven large ensuite bedrooms plus a four-room master suite, an eat-in kitchen, eight fireplaces including one in the grand foyer, large formal rooms, study, pool and pool house. The mansion’s brick terrace overlooking the gardens and woods is a perfect place to sit and ponder your next home improvement task. No longer a fixer upper as portrayed in the 1986 film The Money Pit, Long Island’s Northway estate is priced at $5.9 million. The listing agents are Lois Kirschenbaum and Margaret Trautmann of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s in Locust Valley, New York. www.toptenrealestatedeals.com

CASA ROMANTICA INVITES NATIONALLY-ACCLAIMED USC PROFESSOR Milind Tambe TO DEBUNK A.I. MYTHS AND SHARE ITS GLOBAL BENEFITS Casa Up Close: How Can Artificial Intelligence (AI) be Used for Social Good? Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens, a nonprofit southern California cultural center, is pleased to announce the next lecture in its Casa Up Close educational series, ‘How Can A.I. Be Used For Social Good?’ The lecture will be led by Milind Tambe, the Helen N. and Emmett H. Jones Professor of Engineering and Founding Co-Director of the Center For Artificial Intelligence in Society (CAIS) at the University of Southern California. Tambe is a highly-regarded expert on artificial intelligence as a socioeconomic tool who has been interviewed by several national media groups such as CNN and Fox News. The lecture will be held on Thursday March 8, 2018 at 7:00 pm in Casa Romantica’s Main Salon, and tickets are now available to purchase. “A.I. is already guiding us towards self-driving cars and temperaturecontrolled homes using just our voice, but our community needs to understand additional benefits that it can provide in the future,” says Executive Director Berenika Schmitz. “We are grateful for Professor Tambe for taking the time to educate and engage the community in groundbreaking technology.” Professor Milind Tambe: Championing the Global Impact of Artificial Intelligence Professor Milind Tambe is a champion of artificial intelligence whose research has helped engineers, policy-makers, and humanitarian organizations create plans to solve issues like hunger, homelessness, and national security. He has received numerous awards for his work such as the Rist Prize of the Military Operations Research Society and Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation Homeland security award. Locally, he received the Orange County Engineering Council Outstanding Project Achievement Award in 2015. In 2013, he founded the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Society with fellow USC Professor Eric Rice. The goal of the center is to use A.I. for the social good: for instance, peers at the center compiled data about when and where poaching activities were occurring in Ugandan wildlife
preserves. They created an algorithm that an A.I. program continuously updates with new information and which allows it to project where and when poaching activities are likely to happen next, so that wildlife protection teams can be prepared to defend endangered species on the preserve like elephants, tigers, and rhinoceros. The Protection Assistant for Wildlife Security program, called PAWS, is not at work in multiple preserves across Africa and Asia. For better or for worse, A.I. is now part of our everyday lives. In his Casa Up Close lecture at Casa Romantica, Professor Tambe will share with attendees the positive potential that it can contribute to the wellbeing of society, from effectively spreading health information in lowresource communities to assisting national park patrols in preventing poaching activities. His presentation will also share some of the exciting new projects that his team at CAIS is working on to make the world a better place. Casa Up Close - How Can A.I. Be Used For Social Good? will happen on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at 7:00 PM in the Main Salon at Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens. General admission is $12; Members admission is $10. Tickets may be purchased online at https:// www.casaromantica.org/event/casaup-close-how-can-a-i-be-used-forsocial-good/ by telephone at (949) 498-2139, or in person at the front entrance box office. Casa Up Close Series Casa Romantica’s Casa Up Close series invites guest speakers from all over the United States to engage with the community. Topics span a variety of interests, including arts, education, astronomy, biology, history, and political science. Photos by: Katya Williams Photography Olive Crest Orange County once again hosted its highly-anticipated ‘THE POWER OF ONE” luncheon at the Grove of Anaheim, in celebration of National Adoption Month. Several hundred guests were in attendance to honor foster and adoptive families within Orange County. The State of California has the largest population of foster children, numbering over 56,000 with 2,400 in Orange County. All of these children have one dream in common, which is to be part of a safe home and forever family. As guests entered the main room of The Grove of Anaheim, a powerful and inspiring power point presentation, displayed on both screens, told the amazing story of the great work Olive Crest does within the community. Tim Bauer, Executive Director of Development for Olive Crest Orange County, welcomed the overflow crowd and talked about the event honoring “National Adoption Month.” In addition to the original Founders of Olive Crest, The Campos Family, Victoria Campos, Albert Campos, Damian Dr. Donald and Lois Verleur, both of whom were in attendance. Bauer went Campos, Melany Campos, and Carmen Campos. on to tell the story of over 44 years ago, when the Verleurs took in a couple of teenage girls to come live with them at their house because these girls could not live within their own homes. This year’s luncheon event was underwritten by Stan and Mary Frome of the Frome Family Foundation, Toyota of Huntington Beach, Union Bank, Diana and James Cavaricci of the Cavaricci Foundation, HUB International, Kylie Schuyler and Family, and Jeff and Shannon Mathews. With the assistance of Steven Bernardy, Olive Crest Trustee President and Randy Rider, Olive Crest Trustee Vice President, Bauer presented the Awards to this year’s group of Honorees which included PAAMCO, Orange County Superior Court Judge Dennis Keough, Kappa Delta San Diego, and Friends Church of Yorba Linda. “These individuals and organizations are inspirations who have volunteered their time and resources to help support our kids and their families,” stated Tim Bauer, Executive Director of Development for Olive Crest Honoree Orange County Superior Court Judge Dennis Keogh with Tim Bauer, Mrs. Flores and Mr. Flores. Orange County. “They represent the very best and outstanding examples of the personal power each of us has to change things to make a difference in our communities and in the lives of these kids,” Bauer continued. Kerri Dunkelberger, Executive Director of Olive Crest said, that Olive Crest had finalized its 2,500th adoption! What a milestone and what an accomplishment. Guests departed the luncheon on a high note, confident that Olive Crest would reach its next goal of its 5,000th adoption in the very near future. Since 1973, Olive Crest has transformed the lives of over 100,000 abused, neglected, and at-risk children and their families. Celebrate Red Cross Month by giving blood in March During Red Cross Month in March, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to join in its lifesaving mission by giving blood. Since 1943, every U.S. president has designated March as Red Cross Month to recognize how the Red Cross helps people across the country and around the world. Red Cross Month is a celebration of supporters, who are the face of the Red Cross in their communities and bring hope to people facing emergencies. Blood donor Timothy Sheely knows the need firsthand. His wife required 12 units of blood during emergency surgery following the birth of their son. “If it had not been for blood donors, she might not have survived,” he said. “Thanks to generous blood donors, I still have a wife and my kids still have their mom. I can’t possibly thank those people in person, but I can give a little piece of me back with each donation for the greater good.” The Red Cross depends on blood donor heroes across the nation to collect enough blood to meet the needs of patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals nationwide. Donors of all blood types, especially type O, are needed to help those rely on blood products. Make an appointment to become a hero to patients in need by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800733-2767) Upcoming blood donation opportunities: Aliso Viejo 3/15/2018: 1 p.m. - 7 p.m., The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 22851 Aliso Creek Road Brea 3/2/2018: 1 p.m. - 7 p.m., Brea Masonic Center, 500 E Imperial Hwy Costa Mesa 3/2/2018: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Early College High School, 2990 Mesa Verde Drive 3/5/2018: 7:15 a.m. - 1:15 p.m., St John the Baptist School, 1021 Baker St Fountain Valley 3/2/2018: 8:15 a.m. - 3:15 p.m., Fountain Valley Blood Donation Center, 17800 Newhope St 3/3/2018: 7:45 a.m. - 3 p.m., Fountain Valley Blood Donation Center, 17800 Newhope St 3/4/2018: 7:45 a.m. - 2:45 p.m., Fountain Valley Blood Donation Center, 17800 Newhope St 3/5/2018: 12:15 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., Fountain Valley Blood Donation Center, 17800 Newhope St 3/6/2018: 12:15 p.m. - 7:15 p.m., Fountain Valley Blood Donation Center, 17800 Newhope St 3/7/2018: 12:15 p.m. - 7:15 p.m., Fountain Valley Blood Donation Center, 17800 Newhope St 3/8/2018: 10:45 a.m. - 5:45 p.m., Fountain Valley Blood Donation Page 14

New culinary school opens at OC Fair & Event Center as a free community program A new cutting-edge cooking academy launched at OC Fair & Event Center to empower underserved youth through free culinary education and mentorship. A commercial kitchen on the fairgrounds is being transformed into Hatch Culinary Lab. The new education program is a partnership between OC Fair & Event Center (OCFEC), CulinaryLab C o o k i n g S c h o o l , A n a h e i m ’s Innovative Mentorship Experience program (AIME) and Spectra, the Fair’s master concessionaire. OCFEC is investing an initial $54,000 in equivalent value in this community program that this year will provide up to 50 students with training in everything from knife skills, cookery basics and making healthy meals to safety and sanitation. The spring session will started Feb. 28 with the first 20 students from Kennedy, Savanna and Western high schools working for eight weeks. A summer internship program and fall certification series will follow, culminating in an event to feed the local homeless community. “We have an opportunity to change the lives of students through Hatch Culinary Lab and it is important for us to step in to help,” said OCFEC CEO Kathy Kramer. “Here at the OC Fair we love food, so this program is close to our hearts and ties in perfectly with our community give-back mission. I look forward to growing this program
to include training for both kitchen staff and front-of-the-house positions.” The team from CulinaryLab in Tustin is donating staff and time to the program and has created new curriculum tailored to provide students with the basics on how food works, healthy cooking skills and simple recipes they can practice at home with minimal cost and prep time. The goal is to excite students about cooking and food service and empower them to be confident individuals ready to secure employment. “At CulinaryLab, we do everything we can to immerse students in the world of cooking with experimentation, tons of repetitive hands-on practice, and by involving local chef partners in the teaching process,” said Chef Ryan Wagner. “The goal of the Hatch program is to bring that same highlevel culinary education to high school students who might otherwise not have access to it.” The OCFEC commercial kitchen has been revamped from a solely commercial facility to a fully-equipped teaching kitchen with additional cooking stations, appliances, storage, tables and cookware. The approx. 6,500 sq. ft. facility is operated by Spectra and manager Juan Quintero says the company will also donate kitchen labor, such as dishwashers, to support the program. “The Spectra team is excited to
be part of this community education program. This is really a win-win situation for us,” said Quintero. “Not only do we get to work with the student chefs and see their transformation, but we want to hire program graduates to work at the OC Fair doing kitchen prep and cooking for special events.” Students from Anaheim Unified School District’s AIME program have been selected to participate in the first Hatch Culinary Lab sessions. More than 70 percent of AIME students come from economically challenged backgrounds and spend their time outside of school assisting their families, either at home or by working. The program will provide transportation and additional supervision for Hatch students. There are plans for the program to expand through partnerships with Costa Mesa and Santa Ana school districts to serve up to 80 students annually. Wagner estimated that students will gain up to $20,000 worth of culinary education through the Hatch program and he is seeking to secure restaurant partners to help further students’ training. About CulinaryLab Cooking School CulinaryLab is a forward-focused cooking school where timeless techniques meet cutting-edge curriculum and real-world training to cook up bold, contemporary cuisine. CulinaryLab seeks to reinvent culinary
training with programs that harnesses the power of today’s innovations to train tomorrow’s culinary arts and management visionaries. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-730-2727 or visit this Internet Web site www. servicelinkASAP.com, using the file number assigned to this case 2017-04197. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Date: 2/22/2018 Entra Default Solutions, LLC Katie Milnes, Vice President A-4648543 03/02/2018, 03/09/2018, 03/16/2018

QUARTER PAGE COLOR This month I have terrific low prices on quarter page full color ad packages. Plus you can choose to either pre pay or pay as you go. But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in San Clemente, Talega, Dana Point? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like these reasonably priced local newspapers which are received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners. This advertising costs you far less money. These five local newspapers are attractive, effective and affordable. Let’s talk today!

Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the San Clemente News which features major charity events where the beautiful people of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the San Clemente news and see why. 3. What does Good News mean to you? Most other news media

is full of crime, war, celebrity scandals, and other kinds of bad news. We guarantee that when you place your advertising in the San Clemente news your ad will never be next to any kind of bad news. Our unusual but extremely delightful editorial policy of only printing good, positive family-friendly news makes reading this newspaper a pleasure. Keeping our readers happy keeps them in a pleasant mood when they are reading your advertising message. 4. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local San Clemente area realtors: “SOLD THE SAME DAY that the ad appeared in the San Clemente News, SOLD THE SAME WEEKEND that the ad appeared in the San Clemente News, BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the San Clemente News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the San Clemente News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the San Clemente news for your advertising. 5. Extremely Affordable Classified Advertising
The San Clemente News
Only a Dollar a Word. In keeping with our motto of providing highly effective advertising at an affordable cost, the San Clemente news offers weekly classified advertising for only $1.00 a word with a 15 word minimum. You’re very welcome! 6. San Clemente News Readers can afford your very Best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau the area served by the San Clemente News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in San Clemente, have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 7. Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in San Clemente. 8. Why do San Clemente Readers read the San Clemente News? In the year 2006, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated (approved) The San Clemente News as the official newspaper for San Clemente. That’s why you regularly see stories about the San Clemente City Council, Chamber of Commerce, and prominent San Clemente people in the San Clemente News. So when you advertise In the San Clemente News you get the best of San Clemente readers.
