Two local students honored for their writing skills
On March 9, two St. Junipero Serra Catholic (SJSC) students were recognized at the 19th Annual Chapman University Holocaust Art and Writing Contest awards ceremony for their outstanding writing. Each year, SJSC submits one piece of student art and two student essays from eighth-grade students to the contest. Alexandra Hamm’s essay, titled Justice in the Hands of Humanity, and Davin Maas’s essay, titled Blueprint for a Better Society, were selected as the school’s entries in the writing competition. Alexandra and Davin’s essays were chosen as two of the five finalists in the middle school prose category, and Alexandra’s essay went on to be named the winner. More than two hundred fifty middle and high schools-and some 7,000 students--from more than 30 states and 9 countries participated in this year’s contest. This is not the first time the work of SJSC students has been recognized. Each year, two student essays are forwarded to Chapman University for the final round of judging. This is the fourth year in a row that both essays submitted were selected as finalists and that one of those essays went on to place first or second. All winning writing and art is published on the Chapman University website. To have the writing of two current students recognized in a competition of this scope and caliber is extremely exciting for SJSC. It speaks both
to the quality of the students’ work and to the quality of the school’s writing program. The program gives students a strong foundation that not only serves them well today, but will continue to benefit them throughout their high school years and beyond. Here are the names of past finalists and winners: 2015 (This was the 1st year ever that we had any finalists or winners-and all three of our submissions were finalists!) Mary Botros--finalist, middle school art Caitlin Relvas --finalist, middle school art Cameron Martin-- 1st place, middle school prose 2016 Katrina Botros--finalist, middle school art Ian Staff--finalist, middle school prose Sydney Issa--2nd place, middle school prose 2017 Anthony (Speedy) Laster--finalist, middle school prose Lyndsey Issa--1st place, middle school prose Lillia Velau (St. Serra alum)--1st place, high school prose (JSerra High School) 2018 Davin Maas--finalist, middle school prose Alexandra Hamm--1st place, middle school prose

6 m u st- k no w spring brea k hac k s
Have you been watching the snow pile up outside? Are the gray, cold days wearing you down and making you count the minutes until blue skies and sunshine are the norm? You’re not alone. As much fun as you can have sledding, building snowmen or donning a fashionable scarf, most people at this time of the year start dreaming of sun-filled beaches, flipflops and shorts. No wonder spring break is so popular. Whether you want to bring your family along, get away with a few friends or explore some new, tropical destination, packing up and taking off on an unforgettable spring break vacation is easier and more affordable than you may think. From finding deals to getting there, here is your sixstep guide to a perfect spring break. 1. Get everyone involved. Unless you’re planning a surprise vacation for someone, you want to be sure everyone who is going weighs in and has a say. This is especially important if you’re going on a family trip. Giving your kids the chance to participate in planning and decision-making can help them feel more invested in the trip. For example, while the adults might choose the destination and accommodations, let the kids pick a couple activities to book in advance.
This will lead to a better experience for everyone. 2. Book early. We’ve all heard the mantra “earlier is better” and generally, that’s true for booking airfare. According to a recent report from Expedia and the Airlines Reporting Corporation, for travel originating in the U.S., you should aim to buy tickets at least 30 days in advance. In other words: You should probably book your spring vacation now. 3. Avoid peak travel times. If you have flexibility in terms of your travel dates, make sure you compare prices for different departure windows. Often spring break travel can have an impact on prices, and leaving a week or two earlier or later can save you money. The same applies for travel during and around the Easter holiday (April 1). Use a site like Expedia.com, which will compare rates from all airlines and often provide suggestions for alternate travel dates that yield lower fares. 4. Bundle to save. Always buy your plane ticket and hotel room together. Why? Because 1) it’s convenient and saves you time and 2) you can save some serious money when you do so. For instance, those who use the popular travel website Expedia to book their vacations save an
average of $600 when they bundle their flights and hotel rooms together. Oftentimes, when going to popular resort destinations like Los Cabos or Riviera Maya, the savings are even better, so don’t leave that money on the table. 5. Fly on the right day. As many savvy travelers know, it takes a multipronged approach to find the best deals. Along with booking early and bundling, when you travel plays a big role in the price you pay. According to the same report from Expedia and ARC, booking on a Sunday often yielded the lowest average ticket prices for both economy and premium travel. Furthermore, depending on the
itinerary, travelers departing on Friday may score a lower price. 6. Pack only the essentials. The beautiful thing about a beach vacation is the ability to pack light. Buy your sunscreen once you get to your destination, and opt for flip-flops and lightweight clothing that will all fit in a carry-on bag. Not only will this make life easier when you go to and from the airport, but you’ll save on checked baggage fees as well. An unforgettable spring break vacation for you and your family is more affordable than you think. So stop dreaming and start planning! Sunshine and sand are just a few clicks away! - (BPT)

5 ingre d ients f or a per f ect f amily vacation It’s hard to believe it, but the kids who were labeled “millennials” have all grown up and started their own families. As this next generation enters the realm of parenthood, many will be thinking about what they want to do and where they want to go for their family vacation. Needless to say, for a young family planning a vacation, things will be a little different than when mom and dad traveled. Now it’s all about the kids, and making memories together. For those who are looking to get away with the family this year, here are some essential ingredients for making a memorable vacation. 1. Be on the lookout for “firsts.” Parenting is a series of milestones and firsts: first steps, first words, first day of school. When you and your family step off the plane or out of the car, get ready, because there’s going to be a whole lot of firsts, and it might be a little overwhelming! Travel to a destination like Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where from the first step into the ocean to watching dolphins jump through the waves, you can expect some unforgettable moments. 2. Come as you are. When deciding where to go, pick someplace you can be yourself, where you can relax, experience something new and let the kids be kids. Leave everything else at home and enjoy the easy, laid-back beach-loving lifestyle. South Carolina’s iconic Myrtle Beach boasts over 60 miles of sandy beach, boardwalks, amusement parks and over 1,800 restaurants. With so much to offer, all you need to do is show up! 3. Playing is learning. Parents know that their kids learn best when they’re at play. Vacations are a fantastic opportunity for learning through play.
Minutes away from the ocean at Myrtle Beach is WonderWorks, an amusement park with over 50,000 square feet of entertainment and education, what they call “edu-tainment.” Here kids can learn about natural disasters, space exploration, art, and tire themselves out playing laser tag, tackling an indoor ropes course and much more. 4. Take a day to go explore. Many parents find that one of the truly rewarding parts of traveling with young kids is that their sense of wonder and discovery is contagious. If you found a beautiful beach-side resort, it can be hard to leave. Take even a half day to explore nearby natural wonders, such as those found at Huntington Beach State
Park, and you’ll be rewarded with thousands of secluded acres for you and your family to explore. 5. Enjoy the little things. No matter how well you plan, it’s impossible to anticipate all of the small, intimate moments that make a vacation so memorable. Whether it’s a perfect sunset, a newly built sand castle or a bucket full of sand dollars, there are hundreds of little details that await, so be ready! You can choose whatever ingredients you want to put into your next family vacation - sunshine, blue sky, an ocean, sand beaches, plenty of diversions. It only takes a few of these to make memories that will last a lifetime. - (BPT)

CASA ROMANTICA HOSTS SUMMER LEARNING ACADEMIES FOR CHILDREN Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens, a nonprofit southern California cultural center, is pleased to present two academies as part of the Casa Kids series that aims to provide instruction in performing arts to children. Studies have shown that children who study music and dance develop better focus, higher selfconfidence, and a better long-term memory. In turn, the foundations of performing arts drive these individuals to achieve greater success in higher education, teamwork, and critical thinking. The Casa Romantical Music Festival and Academy offers free instruction for cello, violin, viola, and piano for selected applicants between the ages of 8-13. Furthermore, the faculty holds a public recital with children demonstrating their skills they have developed during their time at the academy. The Music Festival and Academy is made possible with support from Dr. Ron and Margaret Redmond. “I felt much more motivated to become a better musician. I learned how to stay focused through an hour long practice, and that it went by a lot faster if I just concentrated on the music and not the clock. I loved Casa Romantica so much that I applied for a second summer,” explained Music Festival and Academy student Kingsley White, age 11. “Learning a new instrument and thinking about how different instruments work together to create music got me thinking about composing. I started recording my own compositions at home. I am currently a student in violin and composition at the Colburn School and Conservatory. I have my experience at Casa Romantica to thank for inspiring me to take on the challenge of trying new instruments, writing music and becoming a better musician!” “As a child, piano instruction was essential to my success in college and was a core factor in enabling me to succeed in high school, and then attend Harvard and Oxford,” says Executive Director Berenika
Schmitz. “We are thrilled to offer our community’s youth an opportunity to grow their artistic abilities for the fourth year in a row.” Casa Romantical Music Festival and Academy Faculty Dr. Kevin Garnica - Specializing in Collaborative Piano, Garnica received his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Texas at Austin with a full assistantship under the instruction of Anne Epperson. Furthermore, Garnica won the ASCAP Composition Competition for his piano piece Sonata for Scriabin. Launa Kressin – Kressin, who has been playing the violin for 21 years and the viola for nine years, currently plays the violin with the South Coast Symphony Orchestra. Kressin also teaches for Pacific Symphony’s Santa Ana Strings Program and Chapman University. Dr. Minji Noh – As a soloist and chamber musician, Noh has performed with the State Academic Orchestra of Ukraine, Orange County Symphony, La Mirada Symphony, and Bellflower Symphony. Noh has also been broadcasted playing on international and loval programming such as South Korea’s KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) and Wellesley Public Television. Christopher McCarthy – McCarthy is currently the Assistant Principal Cellist at the Dana Point Symphony, but has worked with the Montage Civic Orchestra, Orange Coast College Orchestra, Irvine Valley College Orchestra, and the Crystal Cathedral Hour of Power Orchestra. Brenda Vincent – This professional violinist and instructor attended The Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California and John Hopkins University’s Peabody Conservatory of Music. Vincent’s accomplishments include winning grants from the National Endowment for the Arts in order to transcribe the recording of American jazz violinist Stuff Smith and the “Honorable Mention” award from American Music Initiative. For children who prefer to dance, Casa Romantica offers the Summer
Dance Workshop. An increased aptitude for teamwork, as well as achieving higher test scores, can result from participating in dance. As schools put a higher priority on other programs besides the arts, children may miss out on the opportunity to immerse themselves in this creative type of education. Selected applicants between the ages of 7-12 will get to enjoy themselves in the workshop for free. The Summer Dance Workshop is made possible with support from Bonnie and Ralph Koch. Summer Dance Workshop Faculty Blaire Ostendorf – After graduating with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Dance Performance and Alternative Medicine, Ostendorf signed with BLOC Talent Agency in the Commercial and Dance Departments as a professional dancer. This triggered many opportunities for Ostendorf, who has danced on several television shows, and music videos with musical acts such as Paula Abdul, Fergie, and Kendrick Lamar. Brittany Greenshields – Greenshields has been dancing since the age of five and has since competed in various jazz, lyrical, contemporary, and hip hop dance competitions. As a business and dance student at California State University, Long Beach, Greenshields continues to engage in the dance community by teaching students ages 3 and up at the Underground Dance Company in Laguna Hills. Mychal Gabb – For over 20 years, Gabb has been choreographing, performing, and achieving awards of excellence. Gabb specializes in rhythm tap, hip hop choreo, and tutting. Gabb was the first dancer to receive the Angels of the Arts dance scholarship for his college studies. Furthermore, Gabb is currently the Artistic Director of “NXT LVL,” a pre-professional dance company for emerging teenage dancers. About Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens maintains a robust series of
year-round programs in arts, music, history, horticulture, and literature for all ages. Under the leadership of Executive Director Berenika Schmitz, Casa Romantica has commissioned several critically-acclaimed works, including Casa Coastal: Rebecca Louise Law (2017; visual art), Casa Kinetic: Contemporary Dance Collective (2017; contemporary dance), The Beauty of the Butterfly (2017; visual art), Casa Kinetic: Carrie Lee Riggins (2016; contemporary dance), Casa Drama: Slings & Arrows (2015; theater), and Open Casa: The Photographs of Douglas Kirkland (2015; visual art). Casa Romantica also offers a Summer Dance Workshop, a Spring Break Arts Week, various art, literature, and horticulture events to grades K-12, and welcomes over 2,000 children from the Capistrano Unified School District each year for STEAM-based field trips that examine the history of San Clemente and the coastal environment. OSCAR Wrap Up! Oscar weekend arrived so quickly and left like a whirlwind – especially for me - taking clients to the various parties, red carpets and galas. It was a nonstop star-studded weekend leaving a memorable experience. Let us start at the Wardour Studios Hollywood Stars Gala Academy Awards Oscars Viewing party at the new Beverly Hills Waldorf Astoria. It was perfect weather for an outdoor red carpet with many celebrities in attendance. The theme for this inaugural year “Women in Entertainment” paid tribute to those female filmmakers by showing their support for giving them equal standing within the industry. Walking the red carpet into the luxurious resort were Gretchen Rossi (“OC Housewives”), Jesse Metcalfe (“Desperate Housewives”), Janice Dickinson (“The Janice Dickinson Show”), Jimmy Jean Louis (“Joy”), Melia Kreiling (“The Last Tycoon”, “Tyrant”), Erika Alexander (“Get Out”), 2017 Primetime Emmy Award winner Kim Estes (“Dicks”), 2015-2017 Daytime Emmy Award winner Celeste Fianna (“The Bay”), and many more. On the large screens placed around the room, the show started; Jimmy Kimmel began his opening monologue, those in attendance were seated in the beautiful decorated ballroom with dinner provided by Waldorf Astoria’s superstar chef Jean-George. Celebrities attending, as well as others, also received, collectively, over one million units of W1 Coin, the world’s first entertainment backed cryptocurrency, at the Hollywood Stars Gala. www. wardourstudio.com The next party was The City Gala which had a 100-foot outdoor, starstudded red carpet. It was held at Universal Studios in Hollywood where Matthew McConaughey and his wife as well as over 100 celebrities were in attendance. Along with a celebrity poker tournament, a fashion show, live entertainment, dinner, open bar, and a live and online auction hosted by Charity Stars, the night was spectacular as we mingled with celebrities, VIP’s and stars as we found out more about the nine beneficiary charities this event raises money for. The event is for those charities who are at the grass roots level, to help them get started as we all know how hard it is to fund a startup nonprofit. www.citygala.org Inside The Globe Theater, honoree McConaughey received the Inspiration Award, giving a his speech about his work with his foundation “just keep livin” foundation (www.jklivinfoundation.org) was very inspirational as he outlined his involvement and why he and his wife created it. We also were able to preview the trailer of the feature film “Wishman” based on the life of honoree Frank Shankwitz who is the co-founder of Make-A-Wish; who he was given the Hero Award. I was able to chat with Andrew Steele who plays Shankwitz in the movie who told me what an honor it was to portray the man who started it all with just one wish. Christian Ganiere plays Michael the 7-year-old boy with terminal leukemia that inspired Frank to start the Make a Wish Foundation. “It was truly an inspiring evening, as well as being a beautiful celebration of the work founder Ryan Long does throughout the year to prepare our nine beneficiary charities to meet the challenges they face as new entrepreneurs,” said Dale Godboldo, City Gala beneficiary, founder of Project NOW. Last stop of the night was GRIOT Gala Oscar Night After Party: Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion. GRIOT stands for Giving Resources Inspiration and Opportunity to Talent. The inaugural event was held at the restaurant District by Hannah An and honored Casting Director Leah Daniels-Butler and Daphna Ziman, President of Cinémoi North American and founder of Children Uniting Nations for their contributions in the fight for diversity in Hollywood. There was an exciting red carpet hosted with lots of celebrities and media. Inside the restaurant, guests enjoyed a classy Vietnamese cuisine prepared by the 5-star Chef with an open bar sponsored by Marani Vodka, Vault Spirits, and LaVang Wines. Then something funny happen, as the traffic along 3rd street stopped with the arrival of a special guest - “Joe Jackson” – you know – the King of Pop’s dad? The paparazzi went crazy surrounding his black chauffer driven SUV to try and catch his exit from the vehicle and on to the red carpet. Watching from afar, it was fine; however, when I returned to the Hilton Hotel Universal, I decided to sit back and enjoy a cup of hot mint tea and reflect about the evening. Who walks in? Yes, Joe himself – he came in with his entourage, walked right up to me and asked what I was drinking. From there, I was invited to his table where his crew and I talked about family, his son Michael, music and the wonderful evening we just had. It’s all about where you are when opportunity strikes as you never know what magic will happen, especially in Hollywood. Page 12

Spring has sprung: tips for getting outside to play After being cooped up during one of the l winter, families are eager for warmer weather so they can get outside and play. Research shows that play is an important part of children’s physical, emotional and intellectual development. With spring upon us, now is a great time to make play and outside activity part of your family’s regular routine. Here are some ideas: * Remember, every little bit helps Active play is an important part of keeping families happy and healthy. In fact, childhood obesity increases 29 percent in neighborhoods without a park or playground, according to KaBOOM!, a national non-profit dedicated to ensuring that all children get the balance of active play they need. Instead of driving to your local playground or park, walk or bike, to get in an extra dose of activity. Every little bit helps in keeping your kids growing up strong - physically, emotionally and intellectually. * Keep imagination at the forefront Kids can do anything they put their minds to, and they can keep themselves busy for hours with just their imaginations. Bring that power to your next outdoor adventure by creating a make-believe obstacle course based on their favorite book or movie at your local play area. Get Page 14

with healthy and nutritious nibbles to replenish their growing minds and bodies. Fruits, veggies, applesauce, whole grains and snack-size cheese are great after-play snacks. Make sure kids are also staying hydrated to keep their energy levels up throughout the day.

Pacific Symphony Makes Carnegie Hall Debut in Philip Glass Program Featuring New York Premiere of Orchestra Co-Commission “The Passion of Ramakrishna,” April 21
Pacific Symphony, led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, makes its Carnegie Hall debut in the concluding program of the venue’s seasonlong celebration of the music of Philip Glass. The program explores the influence of Ravi Shankar and Indian aesthetics on Mr. Glass and features the New York premiere of his The Passion of Ramakrishna, a Pacific Symphony co-commission for chorus, soloists, and orchestra that was given its world premiere by Pacific Symphony in 2006. The Pacific Chorale, which sang in the world premiere, will join Pacific Symphony for the performance at Carnegie Hall. The program also includes “Meetings Along the Edge” from Glass/Shankar collaboration Passages and Shankar’s Third Sitar Concerto, featuring the composer’s daughter Anoushka Shankar as soloist. Philip Glass is Carnegie Hall’s 2017-2018 Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair. The performance takes place at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium on Saturday, April 21, at 8:00 p.m. Tickets priced $33 to $95 are available from Carnegie Hall by phone at (212) 2477800, online at carnegiehall.org, or in person at the box office. Pacific Symphony was invited to perform by Mr. Glass and Carnegie Hall after decades of championing the composer’s music in Orange County under Mr. St.Clair. The orchestra’s most significant collaboration with Mr. Glass has been The Passion of Ramakrishna, co-commissioned with the Nashville Symphony. The 2006 world premiere of the work by Pacific Symphony and the Pacific Chorale under Mr. St.Clair was part of the opening ceremonies for the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, where Pacific Symphony is the resident orchestra. The work was revived and recorded live during Pacific Symphony’s 2011 American
Composers Festival, which was dedicated to Mr. Glass and—like the Carnegie Hall program—explored the influence of India’s music and philosophy on his style and artistic thought. The Passion of Ramakrishna is an oratorio-style composition whose namesake, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (1836-86), was a revered Bengali mystic and yogi who played a key role in shaping the modern Indian consciousness. As Mr. Glass states in his liner notes for Pacific Symphony’s recording: It would be hard to overestimate the impact that the life, presence and teaching of Sri Ramakrishna had on the formation of the modern India we know today. It was as if the sleeping giant of Indian culture and spirituality—certainly one of the foremost cultures of the ancient world—had been re-awakened and empowered to take its rightful place in modern times. … It is hard to imagine the emergence of India on the world stage without the spark that was provided by Ramakrishna’s brilliance. Perhaps, some may doubt that India—the most populous democracy of our time, brimming with vitality and creativity—could owe so much to one saintly man, long gone, who lived a life of such utter simplicity. Yet I believe that is exactly the case. It has been said that when a great man dies, it is as if all of humanity—and the whole world, for that matter—were witnessing a beautiful, timeless sunset. At that moment “the great matter of life and death” is revealed, if not explained and understood. By bearing witness to that event, perhaps we understand a little better our own mortality, its limits and possibilities. The Passion of Ramakrishna is meant to recount, in this highly abbreviated work, his suffering, death and transfiguration as they took place during the last few
months of his life. The work’s text is drawn from The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, the principal source for Ramakrishna’s teachings translated into English. To hear Pacific Symphony’s recording on Spotify, click here. The first half of the Carnegie Hall program relates directly to Mr. Glass’s artistic relationship with sitarist Ravi Shankar (1920-2012). The evening opens with “Meetings Along the Edge” from Passages, a 1990 Glass/ Shankar collaboration in which each artist wrote arrangements around themes by the other. “Meetings Along the Edge,” the fifth of the six pieces in Passages, features a mixture of themes by both composers. Passages originally appeared on a Glass/Shankar recording for Atlantic
Records, and Pacific Symphony has recorded “Meetings Along the Edge,” available as an iTunes bonus track to The Passion of Ramakrishna album. Ravi Shankar’s daughter Anoushka Shankar, a celebrated sitarist in her own right, joins Mr. St.Clair and Pacific Symphony in her father’s Third Sitar Concerto. Ms. Shankar gave the work’s world premiere in 2009, performing with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. This concerto is one of four that Ravi Shankar composed for sitar and orchestra, and Ms. Shankar has performed these works around the world, with orchestras including the Berlin, London, Los Angeles, and New York Philharmonics. QUARTER PAGE COLOR This month I have terrific low prices on quarter page full color ad packages. Plus you can choose to either pre pay or pay as you go. But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in San Clemente, Talega, Dana Point? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like these reasonably priced local newspapers which are received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners. This advertising costs you far less money. These five local newspapers are attractive, effective and affordable. Let’s talk today!
