Planning the perfect Easter egg hunt From the White House lawn to the family living room, children of all ages will soon be searching behind bushes and couches to find that last treasured egg. If you don’t have an Easter egg hunt to attend in your community this year, consider planning your own and inviting all the neighbors to participate. Here are some tips for planning the perfect Easter egg hunt: Find out what kids want Kids each have their favorite items they’re hoping they’ll find in their baskets. To deliver the best gifts from the Easter Bunny, you have to think like the kids. See what kids think about the Easter Bunny and the goodies he’s going to bring this year in this adorable video by Personal Creations. Pick the right eggs Load up on eggs of all shapes and sizes. Plastic eggs are the best for hiding, because if an egg isn’t found, it won’t spoil and cause a mess later. Plastic eggs are very colorful, making them easier to spot by both little children and older kids alike. If you’re inviting a lot of younger children to the egg hunt, consider placing several eggs in a soft Easter basket like the Large Plush Bunny Basket and placing it under a tree to make it faster and easier for kids to find. Invite the Easter Bunny Rent an Easter Bunny costume and ask someone to wear it to welcome guests of all sizes to your Easter egg hunt. Ask someone else to be a digital photographer who can email your guests photos taken of their kids posing with the Easter bunny - parents will appreciate the opportunity to have their kids take a picture with the Easter Bunny without having to make a special visit to the local mall. Hang a personalized Egg Hunt Banner
in the yard and decorate the area with streamers and balloons to give your backyard a festive feel. Prepare for rain April showers aren’t outside of the scope of possibilities, so prepare for a rainy day situation. You don’t want a handful of disappointed children at the party. Utilize furniture and the garage to hide eggs throughout the house. Prepare a map of the house and how many eggs are in each room so kids who aren’t familiar with the layout of the home can still find their fair share of hidden eggs. Consider treats that aren’t candy Don’t limit your Easter party treats to just

5 ways to jump-start your heart health
If you’re looking to improve your heart health, each day is all about making a choice that moves you in the right direction. You’d rather stay in with a big bowl of ice cream. But maybe today, you could click off the TV set and take a walk with a friend. It’s easy to see why heart health is a pressing concern. One in three adults live with one or more types of cardiovascular disease, according a review published in the journal Circulation. Over time, changes in the heart and blood vessels can lead to a host of devastating problems, including heart attack, heart failure and stroke. On top of that, lifestyle factors, such as poor diet and a lack of physical activity, lead to one in five deaths in the U.S., according to a study published in 2011 in the Journal of Public Health. The good news is as the weeks and months pass, these healthy choices Page 6
do pay off and make meaningful shifts in your health profile. Turning these choices into habits is well worth the time and effort. Choice by choice, you could see big improvements. 1. Reach for whole foods Diets abound, but the classic Mediterranean-based diet always comes up as a winner for heart health. It’s simple to follow because it’s made up of whole, healthy foods, like fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, olive oil and fish. In 2013, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine said switching to a Mediterranean diet can prevent 30 percent of heart attacks, strokes and heart disease deaths in high-risk people. 2. Get up and move more often The Surgeon General says 2.5 hours of moderate intensity exercise each week promotes good heart health. To get started, visit your doctor to find out what is safe for you. Then work activities you enjoy into your routine, whether it’s a walk in the woods, a leisurely bike ride or swimming laps at the community pool. 3. Seek the company of others This may not come up at the doctor’s office, but the time we spend with friends and family does reward
The San Clemente News
us with better heart health. Isolation is linked to depression and that’s linked to higher rates of heart disease. Pick up the phone and call someone. Schedule lunch with an old friend, plan a special day with younger relatives or sign up for an activity. 4. De-stress and decompress If you constantly feel the effects of stress in your body, it may be time to take steps to reverse that. Scientists haven’t found definitive proof, but they believe stress could trigger inflammation, a precursor to heart disease. So go ahead, and seek some joy: Laughter releases “good” HDL cholesterol. Exercise is also a proven stress buster, and studies show a mindfulness mediation practice reduces blood pressure. 5. Know your risks Hopefully, you’re already making those annual doctor visits because your blood sugar, blood pressure, weight and cholesterol can all tell us something about our heart health. But what you really want to know is whether there is fatty buildup in your arteries, because toocan lead to stroke, peripheral vascular disease and carotid artery stenosis. Doctor office tests offer indicators and warning signs, but they don’t tell you how much you’re blocked.
Luckily, there’s a safe and affordable test that gives you the hard data on what is happening inside your body: vascular screening. If you think learning the truth will discourage you, one study indicates the opposite may be true. The report published in the Journal of Community Medicine and Health Education says people who had vascular screening reported more positive changes to their health several months after their vascular screening than the control subjects who weren’t screened. For example, 61 percent of screened respondents said they ate healthier foods since the screening, versus the 46 percent who were not screened. Truth is empowering and it can give people a powerful incentive to change, even if the news isn’t what you’re hoping to hear. To get your own vascular test, find out when Life Line Screening is coming to your community. You’ll get a results pack you can take to your doctor, so you can work on a plan together to improve your health. To find out when a Life Line screening clinic may be scheduled in your area, visit www.lifelinescreening. com or call (877) 754-9631. - (BPT)

Bunny bowls and spring flavors get families hopping to the table for Easter Spring into the season: Great dishes and flavors to celebrate spring’s arrival When spring finally arrives, we gladly shed heavy coats and snow boots. Meals, too, lighten up with warmer weather, as we leave behind hearty soups and heavier meals in favor of more sprightly and seasonal fare. Spring celebrations - from Easter brunches to graduation dinners - are great opportunities to revisit old favorites and try something new. This spring, why not celebrate the season with a blend of familiar and new? Here are some favorite flavors and foods of spring, along with some ideas for giving them new appeal: * With bright colors and strong, sweet flavor, citrus adds zing to spring. Lemon is ideal for incorporating into spring dishes, from enhancing veggies like early spring squash, to delightful desserts like Lemon PullAparts. Lemon also plays well with a variety of fish dishes - perfect for anyone observing fish Fridays during Lent. * Baked dinner rolls are a springtime favorite for every meal of the day. What Easter brunch would be complete without them? Dinner rolls take on fun seasonal flare when you use ready-made options like Rhodes Bake-N-Serv dinner rolls to create edible works of art like bunny shapes, egg baskets and rabbit-shaped veggie dip bowls. Simply thaw the raw rolls, and shape them while still cold to make a variety of delicious, creative shapes - without the work of mixing and kneading your own dough.
Try these two fun recipes to dress up any springtime table: Bunny Buns Ingredients: 1 package Rhodes Dinner Rolls (thawed but still cold) Directions: Cut a small piece of one roll for a tail. Roll remaining piece into a 16inch rope with pointed ends. Twist top of rope together. Place on a large baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Pull pointed ends apart for ears. Roll small cut-off piece into a ball for the tail. Using your finger, make an indentation at the spot for the tail. Moisten the tail with water and place in the indentation. Repeat
to make as many bunnies as desired. Cover with sprayed plastic wrap and allow rolls to rise for 30 to 45 minutes. Remove the wrap and bake at 350 F for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown. Enjoy with butter. Veggie Rabbit Dip Bowl Serves 12. Prep time: 15 minutes (excluding thaw time). Bake time: 30 minutes. Ingredients: 2 loaves Rhodes Bread Dough, thawed but still cold 2 sliced almonds 2 large raisins 1 egg, beaten Directions: Cut one loaf of bread dough into 1/4 and 3/4 portions. Shape 3/4 portion into egg shape for body and place on a large sprayed baking sheet. Shape 1/4 portion into pear shape and place above body for head. Clip side whiskers with scissors. Cut second loaf in half. Cut one half in half again for ears and roll into two 16-inch ropes. Fold together and place on top of head. With remaining half of loaf, divide dough in half. Take one half and cut into two pieces. Shape into two large thumper feet and place under bunny. Clip toes. Divide last piece of dough into 1/3 and 2/3 portions. Divide 2/3 portion into two hands and place on side of body and clip fingers. Divide remaining 1/3 dough into two large balls and one small ball. Place two large balls on face for cheeks and one small ball for nose. Place two raisins on face for eyes and two almonds for teeth. Brush everything with beaten egg, even
the teeth. Cover with sprayed plastic wrap. Let rise 15 to 30 minutes. Remove wrap and bake at 350 F for 30 minutes or until browned. Let cool. Hollow out tummy and fill with your favorite dip. You can find more great dinner roll recipes at www.rhodesbread.com. * Spring brings the arrival of one of the most delectable edible buds - artichokes. Add them to pasta salads or green salads for flavorful pizzazz. In addition to being delicious and timely for spring, artichokes are packed with antioxidants and fiber, and are believed to deliver a host of health benefits, including improved digestion and lower cholesterol. * Peas are the quintessential green veggie of spring. Low in calories and high in vitamin A, peas are a go-anywhere ingredient. Raw peas add color and snap to spring salads. A handful tossed into warm pasta dishes add a layer of flavor and enhance nutritional value. Cream them as a base for a cold soup or a sauce to enhance fish. * Nutritionists advise Americans to eat a colorful range of fruits and vegetables, and for sheer bright color and great flavor it’s hard to beat strawberries. They also deliver a wealth of health benefits since they’re packed with key nutrients like potassium, magnesium and vitamin K - all important for overall good health. Eat them sliced and sprinkled with an alternative sweetener for a simple, low-calorie treat, or try something new and original like strawberry bruschetta. - (BPT)

CASA ROMANTICA ANNOUNCES MAJOR FASHION LABEL AND NOTABLE SAN CLEMENTE ARTS CHAIRPERSON FOR SIXTH ANNUAL MARY COLBY TEA Fundraiser helps maintain tuition-free kids’ arts education programs at Casa Romantica
Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens, a nonprofit southern California cultural center, is proud to announce that its sixth annual Mary Colby Tea & Fashion Show fundraiser will be headlined by major fashion label St. John and that the Honorary Chairperson for the event is Ms. June Yoder, a San Clemente resident who has made significant philanthropic gifts to Casa Romantica’s programs and center over the past 15 years. The fundraiser, which is named in honor of late San Clemente resident and philanthropist Mary Colby, secures critical support for childrens’ arts educations programs at Casa Romantica. All funds raised through ticket sales and via sales at the event’s silent auction directly underwrite the costs of providing the Music Academy, Dance Workshop, Spring Break Arts Week program, a San Clemente High School student art exhibition, several arts education workshops, and structured field trips serving all of Capistrano Unified School District for free, with free tuition, free supplies, and no administration fees. “We could not become the awardwinning arts organization that we are today without the support and generosity of the women at the Mary Colby Tea, exemplified by people like Honorary Chairperson June Yoder,” says Executive Director Berenika Schmitz. “In addition, we are honored by the participation of Official Fashion Partner St. John, as well as by the numerous local businesses that donate silent auction items, to help us accomplish our important mission and make a positive impact on young people’s lives.” Event overview The Mary Colby Tea & Fashion Show is held annually in May and hosts approximately 90 attendees. Attendees will be greeted by champagne cocktails in the historic Casa Courtyard upon arrival and will proceed to the Main Salon, where the event takes place. For the second year in a row, Casa Romantica is offering Hostess-designed tables;
reserved tables of 8 people which are decorated by a designated Hostess for the competitive opportunity to win a prize. The walls of the Main Salon will be lined with tables displaying over 60 silent auction packages donated by local business owners. Last year, sales from the auction items and tickets netted $10,000 toward Casa Kids programs. Some of this year’s item highlights are a private brunch and fashion presentation at Escada South Coast Plaza, theater tickets, jewelry, yoga and wellness memberships, and fine wine. Tea service begins at 3:15 PM with traditional English cream teas, canapes, scones with clotted cream, fresh fruit and miniature fruit tarts, catered by an exclusive British vendor. Wine is also served at the table. The fashion show presentation begins at 4:00 PM. St. John will send models down Casa Romantica’s European Salon-style runway (models are at ground level and walk a path that follows the Main Salon’s iconic archways through the audience in a large square) with a selection of looks from their Pre-Fall 2018 collection, evolving from trim daytime looks to stunning nighttime outfits as the show progresses. St. John will host a pop-up boutique in the Main Salon across from the silent auction tables. 10% of all proceeds made from purchases at the event will be donated back to Casa Romantica for its arts education programs. The fashion label is also planning to host a private in-store event at its new Fashion Island location to give attendees an additional opportunity to shop for Casa Romantica. Honorary Chairperson Ms. June Yoder San Clemente resident June Yoder has made significant contributions to develop Casa Romantica’s programs and property over the past 15 years. Among her most notable gifts is $25,000 donated in 2007 to the restoration of the Casa Romantica central Courtyard garden (named
the Paul A. Yoder Courtyard in memory of her husband). In addition to multiple philanthropic gifts made over the next decade, she gifted Casa Romantica with $7,500 to cover the operating costs of a free family Sunday each month. Twelve D. New York’s Streisand Movie Set Apartment! New York virtually crawls with celebrities as much as Hollywood, but being a much older city, it also had some of the world’s most renowned celebrities who called it home in the old days. Such is the case with this Upper West Side, 14-story co-op on a tree-lined street surrounded by other notable pre-war architecture near Central Park. The building at 505 West End Avenue was first an inspiration to Sergei Rachmaninoff, the Russian pianist, composer and conductor whose family fled Russia after the Russian Revolution. Sergei lived in the building for several years around 1920 and composed many of his most important works there, just a few floors above the same apartment, now for sale, that Barbara Streisand chose as the set for her 1996 romantic comedy The Mirror Has Two Faces. Streisand was enchanted by apartment 3B when she was researching locations for the film she both produced and starred in - inspired by the light filling the space and the views of treetops and architectural elements of the buildings across the street. The movie’s storyline of a marriage of convenience between actors Streisand and Jeff Bridges displaying their most dumpy demeanors remained sans consummate until Streisand’s character decided to transform herself into a glamorous, self-assured vamp, which finally lit the spark. A story almost paralleling the history of this now glamorous and sophisticated apartment. The film was nominated for multiple Oscar, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for which Lauren Bacall walked away with several for best supporting actress. Lauren played the role of Streisand’s disapproving mother whose character apparently had always undermined her daughter’s
self-esteem until late in the film when she ended up being a motivating force in Streisand’s character’s miraculous makeover. The delivery of her disdain added significantly to the underlying comedy, for which she was highly praised by the critics. Designed by architect Gaetano Ajello and built in 1922, the building followed Ajello’s pre-World War I flamboyant period. In the 1920s, his work tended to be a bit more sedate, his style recognized throughout the Upper West Side where his apartment buildings are most prolific. Unit 3B, with its 11 large windows has three bedrooms, two baths and has undergone a total restoration from the studs out. Cheerful but sophisticated, the apartment has new everything from new copper pipes, new marble, crown molding, wainscoting and stunning new herringbone and inset oak flooring. Rooms are large with the living room and dining room open to each other with large, windowed marble baths, a bright
custom designer kitchen with upscale appliances such as Sub-Zero, Wolf and Miele and an in-unit washer and dryer. The scale of the rooms is large including the entrance foyer and large bedrooms with plenty of room to roam. The building has a live-in superintendent with bike storage and laundry on the lower level. The listing agent is Brian Lewis of Compass in Manhattan.
Barbra Streisand and Rachmaninoff, both of whom had the option of picking anything they wanted, knew a good thing when they saw 505 West End Avenue with the rare element of 11 large windows so close to all the New York action. Priced at $2.895 million. For More Information: www.toptenrealestatedeals.com

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. QUARTER PAGE COLOR This month I have terrific low prices on quarter page full color ad packages. Plus you can choose to either pre pay or pay as you go. But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in San Clemente, Talega, Dana Point? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like these reasonably priced local newspapers which are received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners. This advertising costs you far less money. These five local newspapers are attractive, effective and affordable. Let’s talk today!

1. Special hand delivery makes this newspaper special! The San Clemente news is hand-delivered each week to local San Clemente area businesses, city hall, library, and other popular gathering spots where San Clemente residents can easily pick up a copy. 2. Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the San Clemente News which features major charity events where the beautiful people of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the San Clemente news and see why. 3. What does Good News mean to you? Most other news media

is full of crime, war, celebrity scandals, and other kinds of bad news. We guarantee that when you place your advertising in the San Clemente news your ad will never be next to any kind of bad news. Our unusual but extremely delightful editorial policy of only printing good, positive family-friendly news makes reading this newspaper a pleasure. Keeping our readers happy keeps them in a pleasant mood when they are reading your advertising message. 4. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local San Clemente area realtors: “SOLD THE SAME DAY that the ad appeared in the San Clemente News, SOLD THE SAME WEEKEND that the ad appeared in the San Clemente News, BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the San Clemente News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the San Clemente News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the San Clemente news for your advertising. 5. Extremely Affordable Classified Advertising
The San Clemente News
Only a Dollar a Word. In keeping with our motto of providing highly effective advertising at an affordable cost, the San Clemente news offers weekly classified advertising for only $1.00 a word with a 15 word minimum. You’re very welcome! 6. San Clemente News Readers can afford your very Best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau the area served by the San Clemente News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in San Clemente, have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 7. Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in San Clemente. 8. Why do San Clemente Readers read the San Clemente News? In the year 2006, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated (approved) The San Clemente News as the official newspaper for San Clemente. That’s why you regularly see stories about the San Clemente City Council, Chamber of Commerce, and prominent San Clemente people in the San Clemente News. So when you advertise In the San Clemente News you get the best of San Clemente readers.
