Strawberry Festival is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for the community. This year’s theme is Celebrating 60 Years of Fun and Funding Charities. In 2017 festival profits donated to the community totaled $394.000. Of that, $150,000 was donated for capital expenses to thirteen nonprofit groups. In addition, eight $1,000 scholarships were given to students in Garden Grove School District high schools. The festival also provided $6,000 to transport student bands enabling them to participate in the festival’s Saturday parade. In addition, a dozen non-profit groups who set up festival food booths collectively raised over $150,000 more for their charities. And annually, the festival treats over 2,000 special needs kids to a day of free rides and food. This annual event has brought in over $6.5 million for local charities since its inception in 1958. The festival will be held Memorial Day Weekend Friday, May 25th through Monday, May 28th, 2018. Friday hours are 1:00 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free. Spring into four simple Do It Yourself home decorating trends
Whether you’re personalizing a new home or revitalizing an old room, the start of spring is when newly imagined spaces become doit-yourself realities. Here are four easy and affordable DIY tips to bring 2014’s trends into your home. Don’t just spring clean ... spring create Spring cleaning doesn’t have to mean getting rid of everything in the garage. Familiar pieces showcased in a special way can be a conversation starter. Love cycling, but have an old bicycle that you don’t ride anymore?Consider using its components to construct a unique piece of furniture to showcase your passion for the sport. Peter Debelak, co-owner of Soulcraft Woodshop and Gallery, a membership-based community woodworking workshop in Cleveland, Ohio, did just that. He used Elmer’s ProBond Advanced, a construction adhesive designed specifically for bonding porous to non-porous mixed materials, such as metal to wood or ceramic to drywall, to create a rotating wine rack made out of a bicycle wheel, as well as a shelf and coat rack constructed from a repurposed bicycle crank-set and handlebars. “More and more we’re seeing people personalize their home decor by transforming fascinating objects they love into home accessories and furnishings,” says Debelak. Go ahead, mix materials Vi n t a g e a n d c o n t e m p o r a r y design elements come together to Page 6
create rustic contemporary looks. “Reclaimed materials will heavily influence DIYers, and contrasting shiny and rustic materials in projects will definitely be trending in 2014,” says KariAnne Wood, designer, blogger and owner of Thistlewood Farms. Metal, wood, glass, ceramic - all of these key materials play essential roles in making your home the center of attention. Mixing two, or even all, of these together will give you an edge in creating a unique space. Consider gluing pieces of metal and wood together to construct an industrial-style coffee table. Able to work on almost any substrate, ProBond Advanced’s “opposites attract” formula delivers a heavyduty bond between porous and nonporous surfaces. The glue doesn’t leave a foam residue once it dries, so creating a masterpiece is as easy as glue, clamp and relax. Give piece(s) a chance Recycled wooden pallets and cable spools are trending now on Pinterest in 2014, as DIYers turn them into coffee tables, desks and wall art. “Homeowners are finding ways to bring an element of surprise to staple pieces. Taking utilitarian items and helping them live a new, more beautiful life will enhance any space this season,” says Wood. For a quick and simple patio transformation, spray paint large, wooden cable spools and use them as outdoor tables. Take it a step further by using ProBond Advanced to add a bold, ceramic tile mosaic without any grout, caulk or building required.

Organize organically Most people kick spring off with a little time devoted to organizing. There are easy ways to make your current space functional for your lifestyle without sacrificing your design preferences. Don’t let closet space get cluttered; rather, make use of a space you usually ignore. People are discovering new ways to make beautiful items more functional. That fabulous bench in your entryway may be storing winter coats in a secret storage space but your guests never need to know. Adding storage and improving organization can be just as creative as other spring decorating endeavors. Enhancing your storage solutions can include hanging an old door horizontally and attaching metal hooks to make an instant mudroom by your entryway. Wire baskets glued to wood shelves
become a great home for keys, shoes, and outdoor accessories. No time to build anything? Not to worry. Simply hang a shoe rack on the back of a door, and you have a perfect set of compartments to hold supplies in any room. This season, stay on trend without busting your budget (or your back) by stepping outside of your comfort zone and embracing your most creative ideas. Whether you’re upcycling old items found in the garage into new masterpieces, or giving a more modern pop to a traditional coffee table, this year’s trends involve unique materials and bold design elements. The possibilities are endless, and it’s important to have the right materials to complete every project quickly and correctly the first time. Judy Garland’s Malibu Beach House!
Old Hollywood singer and actress House! Judy Garland put many songs on the map which have become classics. This season we will again hear Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, made popular by her in the 1944 MGM musical Meet Me in St. Louis. Garland started out as a child star of Vaudeville parents who put her on stage with her siblings to sing Jingle Bells. She took to the spotlight instantly and had to be pulled off after repeating the song seven times. From that moment on, the stage was her realm and she revelled in the positive reaction from the audience. Garland won a “special” Oscar for her performance in the film Wizard of Oz, from which her song Over the Rainbow gained forever popularity. She went on to make 35 films, including Every Sunday, Babes in Arms, Little Nelly Kelly, For Me and
My Gal, The Harvey Girls, Meet Me in St. Louis, The Pirate, Easter Parade, A Star is Born, Judgment at Nuremberg, and A Child Is Waiting, and performed in innumerable concert shows around the globe until her early death at the age of 47. Throughout her life, Judy suffered from OCD and depression and was treated with a plethora of prescription drugs, which many believed were the reason for her death. The mother of Liza Minnelli from her marriage to director Vincente Minnelli, Judy was known almost as well for her tragic personal life as she was for her outstanding talent. In 1947, Judy bought a Malibu beach house, a retreat where she could relax to the repetitive soft sounds of the surf and bask in the sunshine with all its healing properties. It was a valuable escape in so many ways. Seventy years
later and after undergoing a massive renovation in 2013, the 1,728-squarefoot house on the sand has three bedrooms, three baths and 10-foot high accordion doors that open to the wraparound deck. The kitchen has Viking appliances and granite countertops and the second floor master has vaulted ceilings and a
private deck. The property is co-listed by Russell Grether and Tony Mark of Compass Realty in Malibu. Judy Garland’s former Malibu Beach getaway house is priced at $3.695 million. For More Information: TopTenRealEstateDeals.com. Source: compass.com

CASA ROMANTICA ANNOUNCES MAJOR FASHION LABEL AND NOTABLE SAN CLEMENTE ARTS CHAIRPERSON FOR SIXTH ANNUAL MARY COLBY TEA Fundraiser helps maintain tuition-free kids’ arts education programs at Casa Romantica
Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens, a nonprofit southern California cultural center, is proud to announce that its sixth annual Mary Colby Tea & Fashion Show fundraiser will be headlined by major fashion label St. John and that the Honorary Chairperson for the event is Ms. June Yoder, a San Clemente resident who has made significant philanthropic gifts to Casa Romantica’s programs and center over the past 15 years. The fundraiser, which is named in honor of late San Clemente resident and philanthropist Mary Colby, secures critical support for childrens’ arts educations programs at Casa Romantica. All funds raised through ticket sales and via sales at the event’s silent auction directly underwrite the costs of providing the Music Academy, Dance Workshop, Spring Break Arts Week program, a San Clemente High School student art exhibition, several arts education workshops, and structured field trips serving all of Capistrano Unified School District for free, with free tuition, free supplies, and no administration fees. “We could not become the awardwinning arts organization that we are today without the support and generosity of the women at the Mary Colby Tea, exemplified by people like Honorary Chairperson June Yoder,” says Executive Director Berenika Schmitz. “In addition, we are honored by the participation of Official Fashion Partner St. John, as well as by the numerous local businesses that donate silent auction items, to help us accomplish our important mission and make a positive impact on young people’s lives.” Event overview The Mary Colby Tea & Fashion Show is held annually in May and hosts approximately 90 attendees. This years event is on May 5, 2018. Attendees will be greeted by champagne cocktails in the historic Casa Courtyard upon arrival and will proceed to the Main Salon, where the event takes place. For the second year in a row, Casa Romantica is
offering Hostess-designed tables; reserved tables of 8 people which are decorated by a designated Hostess for the competitive opportunity to win a prize. The walls of the Main Salon will be lined with tables displaying over 60 silent auction packages donated by local business owners. Last year, sales from the auction items and tickets netted $10,000 toward Casa Kids programs. Some of this year’s item highlights are a private brunch and fashion presentation at Escada South Coast Plaza, theater tickets, jewelry, yoga and wellness memberships, and fine wine. Tea service begins at 3:15 PM with traditional English cream teas, canapes, scones with clotted cream, fresh fruit and miniature fruit tarts, catered by an exclusive British vendor. Wine is also served at the table. The fashion show presentation begins at 4:00 PM. St. John will send models down Casa Romantica’s European Salon-style runway (models are at ground level and walk a path that follows the Main Salon’s iconic archways through the audience in a large square) with a selection of looks from their Pre-Fall 2018 collection, evolving from trim daytime looks to stunning nighttime outfits as the show progresses. St. John will host a pop-up boutique in the Main Salon across from the silent auction tables. 10% of all proceeds made from purchases at the event will be donated back to Casa Romantica for its arts education programs. The fashion label is also planning to host a private in-store event at its new Fashion Island location to give attendees an additional opportunity to shop for Casa Romantica. Honorary Chairperson Ms. June Yoder San Clemente resident June Yoder has made significant contributions to develop Casa Romantica’s programs and property over the past 15 years. Among her most notable gifts is $25,000 donated in 2007 to the restoration of the Casa Romantica
central Courtyard garden (named the Paul A. Yoder Courtyard in memory of her husband). In addition to multiple philanthropic gifts made over the next decade, she gifted Casa Romantica with $7,500 to cover the operating costs of a free family Sunday each month. Twelve D. Yoder Family Sundays (named for her late son, David Yoder) occurred over the course of 2017 with a total of 3,063 visitors: an average of 250 each time. Ms. Yoder renewed her charitable contribution for the 2018 calendar year. The Legacy of Mary Colby Mary Elizabeth Colby (1914-2008) was the first woman buyer for the Robinson’s department stores. She founded “Ports of Call” stores in Pasadena and in Beverly Hills, and settled permanently in San Clemente. Her San Clemente-based Mary Colby Antiques stores were some of the largest antique galleries on the West Coast. Mary hosted an annual Tea each year for the community, and bequeathed her private china collection to Casa Romantica to educate young people in the beauty and value of their heritage. Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens is proud to honor her tradition, her contributions, and her goals. Tickets and general information: https://www.casaromantica.org/ event/mary-colby-tea-fashion-show/ About Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens maintains a robust series of year-round programs in arts, music, history, horticulture, and literature for all ages. Cooking fire facts: · Most cooking fires in the home involve the stovetop. · Keep anything that can catch fire - oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains - away from your stovetop. · Always stay in the kitchen when frying on the stovetop. Extension cord facts: · Extension cord fires outnumbered fires beginning with permanent or detachable power cords by two times. · Check electrical cords to make sure they are not running across doorways or under carpets. Be prepared: Red Cross urges blood and platelet donation Because emergency situations are unpredictable, the American Red Cross needs regular donations to help ensure that blood products are available for patients at a moment’s notice. You can help ensure a sufficient supply for accident victims and others with serious medical conditions. This May, the American Red Cross is calling for donors to give blood and platelets regularly to be prepared to meet the needs of patients in emergency situations. According to the National Trauma Institute, trauma accounts for approximately 41 million emergency department visits and 2 million hospital admissions each year. In March 2015, Kevin Frame suffered life-threatening injuries in a head-on collision during spring break. He received blood products to treat internal injuries immediately after the accident and during multiple surgeries while recovering. “Without the blood and plasma products made available from donations, I would not be alive today to continue my rehabilitation journey,” said Frame, who had to relearn to swallow, speak and walk after the accident. Regular blood, platelet and plasma donations help ensure that blood is available at a moment’s notice. In fact, it is the blood on the shelves that is used to help save lives at the time of an accident or sudden illness. In trauma situations, when there’s no time to check a patient’s blood type, emergency personnel reach for type O negative red blood cells and type AB plasma because they can be transfused to any patient, regardless of blood type. Less than 7 percent of the population has type O negative blood, and only about 4 percent of the population has type AB blood. Platelets may also be needed to help with clotting in cases of massive bleeding. Because platelets must be transfused within five days of donation, there is a constant – often critical – need to keep up with hospital demand. Donors of all blood types are urged to roll up a sleeve this May to help meet the needs of trauma patients and others with serious medical conditions. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). All those who come to donate from April 9 to May 13, 2018, will be entered to win one of three $1,000 gift cards to a national home improvement retailer, courtesy of Suburban Propane. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at checkin. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their predonation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/ RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. Volunteers needed Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross is to become a volunteer transportation specialist and deliver lifesaving blood products to local area hospitals. Volunteer transportation specialists play a very important role in ensuring an ample blood supply for patients in need by transporting blood and blood products. For more information and to apply for a volunteer transportation specialist position, visit rdcrss.org/driver. About the American Red Cross The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, please visit RedCross. org or CruzRojaAmericana.org, or visit us on Twitter at @RedCross.

QUARTER PAGE COLOR This month I have terrific low prices on quarter page full color ad packages. Plus you can choose to either pre pay or pay as you go. But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in San Clemente, Talega, Dana Point? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like these reasonably priced local newspapers which are received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners. This advertising costs you far less money. These five local newspapers are attractive, effective and affordable. Let’s talk today!

Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the San Clemente News which features major charity events where the beautiful people of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. We’d like to share some actual quotes from local San Clemente area realtors: “SOLD THE SAME DAY that the ad appeared in the San Clemente News, SOLD THE SAME WEEKEND that the ad appeared in the San Clemente News, BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the San Clemente News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. The San Clemente News

Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 7. Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in San Clemente. 8. Why do San Clemente Readers read the San Clemente News? In the year 2006, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated (approved) The San Clemente News as the official newspaper for San Clemente. That’s why you regularly see stories about the San Clemente City Council, Chamber of Commerce, and prominent San Clemente people in the San Clemente News. So when you advertise In the San Clemente News you get the best of San Clemente readers.
