Chinese history comes alive in Nanjing
In southern China, the ancient capital city of Nanjing beckons travelers who long to immerse themselves in Chinese history and culture. Nanjing served as the capital city of 10 dynasties and regimes over more than 1,800 years and is home to some of China’s most significant historical attractions, including the Xiaoling Tomb of the Ming Dynasty, Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum, the Presidential Palace and the City Wall, which dates back more than 600 years. Here, past dynasties are alive and well, entwined with glittering modern skyscrapers. The misty Purple Mountain looms in the distance and the Ningzheng Ridge forms a crescent around this city in the heart of the Yangtze River delta. If you visit Nanjing, don’t just see the sights like a tourist. Walk in footsteps of the past with these thoughtprovoking, immersive experiences designed to bring Nanjing’s history and culture to life. Imperial Examination Experience Do you have what it takes to be a top scholar? When you take part in the Imperial Examination Experience at Nanjing’s Jiangnan Imperial Examination Hall Museum, you will step into the shoes of an ancient Chinese civil servant and find out. Beginning in the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. to 220 A.D.), citizens wishing to serve in the state bureaucracy were required to pass a rigorous government-issued examination.
However, the test didn’t involve job skills. Instead, it assessed candidates’ knowledge of classic literature and literary style. Successful candidates were generalists who shared a common language and culture, which helped to unify the empire and shape the fabric of China’s intellectual, cultural and political life. During the three-hour Imperial Examination Experience, you’ll dress in traditional attire and learn to create Chinese calligraphy with a brush pen and make thread-bound books to take home as a souvenir. You will walk away having experienced a glimpse of what ancient Chinese life was really like. Chinese Tea Culture Experience Few things are as closely associated with China as tea. Its long history as an indispensable part of daily life runs like a silk thread through everything from poetry to painting to calligraphy to medicine. Travelers seeking a deep exploration of tea should be sure to book the Chinese Tea Culture Experience in Nanjing. During this four-hour activity, you’ll see the stunning and peaceful Xuanwu Lake Park, formerly an imperial garden, before you disappear into a secret interior passageway in the Nanjing City Wall to find the hidden, speakeasy-style Lao Cui Teahouse. There, you’ll learn about the importance of tea in the Chinese culture from a tea master, who will guide you in the ways of brewing a perfect cup of tea. Finally, you’ll learn the ancient art of Chinese woodblock
printing and create your own as a keepsake of the experience. Nanjing Cloud Brocade Museum Yunjin, meaning “as beautiful as a cloud at sunset,” is silk brocade exquisitely woven in a style dating back 1,500 years. Incorporating silk, gold and silver threads, and even peacock feathers, the fabric was once reserved exclusively for the ornate dragon robes worn by emperors. At the Nanjing Cloud Brocade Museum, the only one of its kind in the world, visitors can watch as artisans weave the brocade in the traditional style on self-powered looms. The craft is so intricate that the weavers produce only five centimeters of yunjin per day. Nanjing Impressions Founded in 1994, Nanjing Impressions is considered one of the must-visit restaurants in all of China for locals and travelers alike. Named a Top 50 Chinese Heritage Restaurant, it aims to preserve traditional Huaiyang cuisine, a popular and prestigious style of cooking in Jiangsu Province that has been designated as one of the four great traditions of Chinese cuisine. The atmosphere in Nanjing Impressions transports you to the past with its interior designed like an ancient tea house, hundreds of hanging lanterns, wooden benches and authentic dress for the servers and chefs. The experience is vibrant, with servers shouting blessings as they pass traditional Nanjing specialties. You’ll find many duck dishes on the menu here, but make
sure to try the city’s signature dish of Nanjing Salted Duck, a 400-year-old recipe that involves a complicated procedure of brining and dry rubbing that produces a rich, tender bird. The Chinese believe a perfect meal consists of 10 dishes, so come hungry to experience this love letter to Nanjing cuisine. Qinhuai River Cruise Float lazily down Nanjing’s Mother River on a romantic evening cruise, and you’ll feel like you’ve traveled back in time to the city’s roots. Distant strains of guqin, a traditional Chinese stringed instrument, waft through the air as you cruise along the lantern-lit Qinhuai Scenic Area, with its quaint riverboats, footbridges and Chinese architecture including one of the world’s best-preserved Barbican gates. As the ancient Chinese world floats by, you’ll understand why the Qinhuai River cruise is one of Nanjing’s top attractions. Ready to start planning your Nanjing experience? How to prepare your pet for summer fun - and beyond The dark, cold days of winter are nearly behind us, and many people are looking forward to warmer weather and outdoor activities. Dogs also appreciate their time in the sun. So, it’s important to keep in mind what you need to do to make sure your dog is ready to enjoy summer activities. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) provides important summertime pet care tips, including: * Provide adequate water and shade * Never leave your dog in the car * Take walks and play outside during cooler hours of the day * Avoid walking on hot pavement that can hurt your dog’s paws * Provide regular flea and tick protection And, if your dog isn’t on a regular schedule of heartworm preventive, now is a good time to start. Many people don’t realize that while mosquito bites are usually a minor irritation for most people, for dogs, just one mosquito bite can be life-threatening. This is because mosquitoes carry heartworm. Heartworm disease may exhibit few symptoms. When diagnosed, it is difficult and expensive to treat and, if not caught in time, can be fatal. If you don’t live in an area with a heavy concentration of mosquitoes, or if your dog doesn’t spend a lot of time outside, you may think that your dog is not at risk. According to the American Heartworm Society (AHS), “Heartworm disease is spreading to new regions of the country each year. Stray and neglected dogs and certain wildlife such as coyotes, wolves and foxes can be carriers of heartworms. Mosquitoes blown great distances by the wind and the relocation of infected pets to previously uninfected areas all contribute to the spread of heartworm disease.” The AHS recommends year-round protection
because it is “an easy thing to do and is much less expensive than treating serious, sometimes deadly, heartworm disease.” Leading veterinary organizations including the Companion Animal Parasite Council, the American Animal Hospital Association and the AVMA also support year-round protection. For many people, however, remembering that monthly heartworm pill is easier said than done. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine agreed to revisions under which ProHeart 6, a six-month injectable heartworm preventive, may be administered. The changes were made based on a safety study encompassing 4 1/2 years’ worth of data that demonstrated that predictable safety and efficacy remained consistent as use of the injection increased. This data shows that ProHeart 6 is safe and effective for the prevention of canine heartworm disease for six full months in dogs age 6 months and older. “Monthly heartworm medications are effective, if they are given on the proper schedule,” says John Santilli of Mayfair Animal Hospital in Cary, N.C. “Unfortunately, many of my clients have busy lives, and, while they have the best of intentions, doses are missed. Heartworm disease is a serious problem here in North Carolina. That’s one reason I rely on the six-month, injectable heartworm preventive. Not only does it give my clients the peace of mind that their dogs are protected against heartworm disease, the biannual visits allow me to make sure that those dogs are healthy in other respects, too. We can check for any dental issues, examine for tumors and help keep our canine patients in good shape for summer activities - and all year round.” As with any medication, it’s critical to consult with your dog’s veterinarian
to see if an injectable heartworm preventive is a good option to provide six months of protection to your dog and six months of peace of mind for you. I M P O RTA N T S A F E T Y INFORMATION: ProHeart 6 should be used in healthy dogs. Do not administer to sick, debilitated, underweight dogs or dogs that have a history of weight loss. Prior to administration, ProHeart 6 certified veterinarians should continue to assess patient health through a medical history, physical examination and if deemed appropriate, diagnostic testing. Continue to use caution when administering ProHeart 6 concurrently with vaccinations. Adverse events, including anaphylaxis, have been reported following the concomitant use of ProHeart 6 and vaccines. In some cases, anaphylactic reactions have resulted in death. Use with caution in dogs with pre-existing or uncontrolled allergic disease (food allergy, atopy or flea allergy dermatitis). Dogs receiving ProHeart 6 should be tested for existing heartworms as per the product label. In people, avoid ProHeart 6 contact with eyes. If contact with the eyes occurs, rinse thoroughly with water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention immediately. ProHeart 6 is available only to veterinarians through a restricted distribution program. Only certified veterinarians and staff can administer it. For more safety information, see full Prescribing Information. - (BPT)

On Wednesday, July 4, 2018 the City of San Clemente will host its annual Independence Day celebration for the community. The end of the pier, opposite the entrance, will close at noon on Monday, July 3rd for preliminary preparation and the entire pier will close on Wednesday, July 4th at 8:00 a.m. and remain closed for the entire day. The Fisherman’s Restaurant will be accessible to its patrons. A flyover by the Condor Squadron, consisting of four AT-6 aircraft World War II trainers will take place along the participating coastal cities of Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point and San Clemente. The flyover will begin in Huntington Beach and conclude in San Clemente where it will flyover the coast and conduct a 360 in the air. The full flyover schedule is as follows: • Huntington Beach 5:25 to 5:30 p.m. • Newport Beach 5:35 to 5:40 p.m. • Laguna Beach 5:45 to 5:50 p.m. • Dana Point 5:50 to 5:55 p.m. • San Clemente 5:55 to 6:00 p.m. Members of the public are reminded to not camp out the evening before the fourth of July. The San Clemente Municipal Code (SCMC) prohibits overnight camping in parks and on the beach, and being on the beach Page 6
between the hours of midnight and 4:00 a.m. Those in violation of the ordinance can be cited while unattended property left on the beach is not the responsibility of the City. Additionally, beach users are reminded that the consumption of alcohol is prohibited on all City beaches. Members of the public are also reminded that SCMC states that no person shall takeoff, land, or operate an unmanned aircraft or “drone” over any Citypermitted events open to the public, unless granted written or electronic permission by the City. Also, please be advised that dogs are not permitted on the coastal trail on July 4th. All ocean access, including swimming, surfing, and wading, will be closed 1,000 feet in both directions from the pier from 8:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. The purpose is to protect people from the dangers of fireworks fallout. The show risks delays or cancellation if the public does not comply with the closure. To assist with downtown parking, the San Clemente Trolley will be in service from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The regular trolley route will be available from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Please be advised that beginning at 6:00 p.m. the Trolley route will be adjusted to accommodate street closures in the Pier Bowl and downtown area.
The San Clemente News
The closure will impact stops 1, 3, 4, 14, 15, & 16. Trolley riders looking to utilize the service after the fireworks show can access the trolley at Stop 2, located at the Community Center on the corner of Avenida City Manager’s Office 100 Avenida Presidio San Clemente, California 92672 (949) 361-8322 FAX 361-8283 Del Mar and Calle Seville. Check for any changes to the hours of operation by visiting www.sanclemente.org/trolley. For pedestrian safety and to avoid major traffic problems, San Clemente Police Services will be restricting vehicular traffic between approximately 7:00 and 10:00 p.m. in the entire lower Pier Bowl area adjacent to the pier. Pedestrians should take caution, especially with the increased crowds, to stay clear of the train tracks. The municipal beach and pier will be closed to the public after the fireworks display until the morning of Thursday, July 5th. Following the fireworks show, San Clemente Police Services will conduct traffic control and assist people in exiting the Pier Bowl, diverting them in a systematic fashion to freeways and surface streets. There will be three designated routes out of the Pier Bowl, including: 1) Palizada and directed to the freeway at Palizada or north onto El
Camino Real (two lanes will be open on El Camino Real). 2) Del Mar and diverted onto Presidio. 3) Victoria and diverted southbound onto the freeway at Valencia and Calafia. Although intersections/streets will not be closed, please expect all Pier Bowl streets to be impacted by the exit route, including the following: • East Palizada/Seville • East Seville/Del Mar • East Palizada/Puente • East Ola Vista/Palizada • Del Mar/Ola Vista • East Victoria/Ola Vista • El Camino Real/Palizada • Palizada/Estrella • Del Mar/El Camino Real • Victoria/El Camino Real • El Camino Real/Presidio When leaving the beach, people are asked to take their trash with them. Any trash and litter remaining on the beach will end up polluting the ocean. Roping or blocking-off portions of the beach for private use is not permitted. Also, the City of San Clemente has ordinances prohibiting any fireworks, including Safe & Sane fireworks within the City limits, and ordinances prohibiting the consumption of alcoholic beverages on the beach and pier. San Clemente Police Services will strictly enforce these ordinances.

Science-based suggestions for self-confidence A recent study shows your perception of your own image has a profound effect on how you present yourself to the rest of the world. Those findings could be empowering since even small changes to your selfcare routine can significantly boost your self-confidence. The study by researchers at the Stanford Graduate School of Business found those who believe in their own attractiveness view themselves as having higher social status. “The finding that your assessment of yourself shapes your view of yourself and others puts power into your hands,” the authors note. Consider how these science-based suggestions may help you put your best foot forward when dealing with everything life throws your way. * Get moving. Regardless of your fitness goals, the fact is you’re likely to feel better physically, emotionally and mentally after you exercise. Research also shows it can improve your self-esteem. * Ramp up your smile. Scientists say our brains are zapped with an instant mood boost when we smile, and that boost is reinforced when others smile back. Further, whiter
teeth can have a direct effect on our social and professional interactions, and they’re now easy to achieve through consumer brands like Rembrandt’s 1 Week Whitening Kit that can achieve professional-level results at home within a week. * Let your body language communicate self-respect. Keeping your shoulders pulled back and your body straight and tall communicates confidence to your brain, studies show. Research found the most empowering stance is one in which your arms are held slightly away from your torso, your body is open and your head is up. * Optimize color in your clothing. The right shade may light up your entire face and have a surprising impact on your mood. “Choosing the color of your office, your clothes or your desktop should not be taken lightly - colors do affect our moods and productivity,” states a recent article on Scienceofpeople.com. “When given the choice, picking a color that will work with you and not against you can only help.” * Wear scent strategically. Because our brains link certain smells to positive experiences, research
suggests we may be able to ramp up our confidence with scents that remind us of happy times. That’s why aromatherapy can help alleviate anxiety, depression and sleeplessness, and improve quality of life for those with chronic health issues, confirms the Mayo Clinic. Bottom line: When you’re taking care of yourself and projecting your best self, you’re far more likely to
project the confidence you need to deal effectively with life. “Confidence can make or break a lot of things,” advises Lecia Bushak on Medicaldaily.com. “In our extrovert-centric society, confidence can get you a job, a girlfriend, and the courage to say no to people or situations that are toxic to you. Confidence is knowing yourself and taking care of yourself, too.” - (BPT)

CASA ROMANTICA HOSTS SUMMER LEARNING ACADEMIES FOR CHILDREN Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens, a nonprofit southern California cultural center, is pleased to present two academies as part of the Casa Kids series that aims to provide instruction in performing arts to children. Studies have shown that children who study music and dance develop better focus, higher selfconfidence, and a better long-term memory. In turn, the foundations of performing arts drive these individuals to achieve greater success in higher education, teamwork, and critical thinking. The Casa Romantical Music Festival and Academy offers free instruction for cello, violin, viola, and piano for selected applicants between the ages of 8-13. Runs July 8-20, 2018 Furthermore, the faculty holds a public recital with children demonstrating their skills they have developed during their time at the academy. The Music Festival and Academy is made possible with support from Dr. Ron and Margaret Redmond. “I felt much more motivated to become a better musician. I learned how to stay focused through an hour long practice, and that it went by a lot faster if I just concentrated on the music and not the clock. I loved Casa Romantica so much that I applied for a second summer,” explained Music Festival and Academy student Kingsley White, age 11. “Learning a new instrument and thinking about how different instruments work together to create music got me thinking about composing. I started recording my own compositions at home. I am currently a student in violin and composition at the Colburn School and Conservatory. I have my experience at Casa Romantica to thank for inspiring me to take on the challenge of trying new instruments, writing music and becoming a better musician!” “As a child, piano instruction was essential to my success in college and was a core factor in enabling me to succeed in high school, and then attend Harvard and Oxford,”
says Executive Director Berenika Schmitz. “We are thrilled to offer our community’s youth an opportunity to grow their artistic abilities for the fourth year in a row.” Casa Romantical Music Festival and Academy Faculty Dr. Kevin Garnica - Specializing in Collaborative Piano, Garnica received his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Texas at Austin with a full assistantship under the instruction of Anne Epperson. Furthermore, Garnica won the ASCAP Composition Competition for his piano piece Sonata for Scriabin. Launa Kressin – Kressin, who has been playing the violin for 21 years and the viola for nine years, currently plays the violin with the South Coast Symphony Orchestra. Kressin also teaches for Pacific Symphony’s Santa Ana Strings Program and Chapman University. Dr. Minji Noh – As a soloist and chamber musician, Noh has performed with the State Academic Orchestra of Ukraine, Orange County Symphony, La Mirada Symphony, and Bellflower Symphony. Noh has also been broadcasted playing on international and loval programming such as South Korea’s KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) and Wellesley Public Television. Christopher McCarthy – McCarthy is currently the Assistant Principal Cellist at the Dana Point Symphony, but has worked with the Montage Civic Orchestra, Orange Coast College Orchestra, Irvine Valley College Orchestra, and the Crystal Cathedral Hour of Power Orchestra. Brenda Vincent – This professional violinist and instructor attended The Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California and John Hopkins University’s Peabody Conservatory of Music. Vincent’s accomplishments include winning grants from the National Endowment for the Arts in order to transcribe the recording of American jazz violinist Stuff Smith and the “Honorable Mention” award from American Music Initiative. For children who prefer to dance,
Casa Romantica offers the Summer Dance Workshop. An increased aptitude for teamwork, as well as achieving higher test scores, can result from participating in dance. As schools put a higher priority on other programs besides the arts, children may miss out on the opportunity to immerse themselves in this creative type of education. Selected applicants between the ages of 7-12 will get to enjoy themselves in the workshop for free. The Summer Dance Workshop is made possible with support from Bonnie and Ralph Koch. Summer Dance Workshop Faculty Blaire Ostendorf – After graduating with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Dance Performance and Alternative Medicine, Ostendorf signed with BLOC Talent Agency in the Commercial and Dance Departments as a professional dancer. This triggered many opportunities for Ostendorf, who has danced on several television shows, and music videos with musical acts such as Paula Abdul, Fergie, and Kendrick Lamar. Brittany Greenshields – Greenshields has been dancing since the age of five and has since competed in various jazz, lyrical, contemporary, and hip hop dance competitions. As a business and dance student at California State University, Long Beach, Greenshields continues to engage in the dance community by teaching students ages 3 and up at the Underground Dance Company in Laguna Hills. Mychal Gabb – For over 20 years, Gabb has been choreographing, performing, and achieving awards of excellence. Gabb specializes in rhythm tap, hip hop choreo, and tutting. Gabb was the first dancer to receive the Angels of the Arts dance scholarship for his college studies. Furthermore, Gabb is currently the Artistic Director of “NXT LVL,” a pre-professional dance company for emerging teenage dancers. Laguna Playhouse Raises $1.7 Million at Newport gala
Photos by Patrick and Peggy O’Donnell The Laguna Playhouse raised $1.7 Million at their annual gala held at Island Hotel in Newport Beach. Attended by 400 playhouse patrons, the sold-out event featured a VIP Sponsors Reception, an elegant dinner, live and silent auction, entertainment and a special performance by “Phantom of the Opera” star Davis Gaines. Honored at the event were the Moulton Family and South Coast Plaza. “A big thank you to Gala Honorees Jared Mathis (great-grandson of Nellie Gail Moulton) and the Moulton Family for announcing their $1 million gift toward renovations which will restore the beauty and vitality of the Moulton Theatre,” said Ellen Richard, Laguna Playhouse Executive Director. The Island Hotel was transformed into a glamorous backdrop to this memorable and inspiring evening which began with a VIP Sponsors Reception and private performance by “Phantom of the Opera Star” Davis Gaines. Members of the Playhouse Youth Theatre Conservatory joined Gaines in performing “Day by Day”. Chair of the Board of Trustees Paul Singarella kicked off the honoree portion of the night with a historical introduction about the Moultons. He welcomed Mathis to the stage, while a historical video played paid tribute to a pioneer of the arts and philanthropist, Nellie Gail Moulton, the major benefactor to the building of Laguna Playhouse’s Moulton Theatre. It was 1966, when Nellie Gail Moulton was approached to help fund the building of the now 420 seat Moulton Theatre named after her husband Lewis F. Moulton. Donating a large principal amount of the $400,000 needed to build the theatre, Nellie Gail not only served as the major benefactor of the theatre, she co-founded the Laguna College of Art and Design served as President of the Laguna Art Museum. Big Price On Shaq’s Big Florida House!
Pro basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal has put his 28-room lakefront mansion near Orlando, Florida on the market at $28 million. A longtime Orlando-area resident, shortly after he was the #1 overall pick in the 1992 NBA draft by the Orlando Magic, Shaq played for the Magic from 1992 to 1996 before signing with the Los Angeles Lakers for $121 million. At the end of the contract he returned to Florida in 2004 to play for the Miami Heat, then played for several other teams before retiring in 2011. O’Neal now spends most of his time in Atlanta where he works as an analyst for TNT on Inside the NBA. Shaq’s massive Lake Butler estate within the private golf community of Isleworth, about 30 minutes southwest of Orlando, is sized to feel spacious to a man of 7’1” weighing in at 325 pounds. Completely customized to fit his varied lifestyle, it is not surprising that one outstanding feature is an indoor 6,000-square-foot basketball court with bleachers. Unusual extras include two garages that together will fit 17 cars, one a show-car garage with fitness center and the other having a dance studio and an enclosed recording studio, recalling
Page 14
his rap music hits of the 1990s. Measuring in at 31,000 square feet and spread across the entire three acres, the mansion includes 12 bedrooms, 15 baths, chef’s kitchen with Viking, Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, massive living room, formal dining, media room with bar and a “gentleman’s room” with game tables, and wet bar. The master wing has a four-room closet, his-and-her baths and in the bedroom, a custom 15-foot round bed. The guest wing has its own great room with bar and five ensuite bedrooms. Some unusual rooms include a temperaturecontrolled, cedar-planked humidor and wine storage and an aquariumstyle room with saltwater triangular fish tank. Most impressive is the wall mural of a true-to-size tractor trailer barreling toward the interior of the room on an expressway. With the front cab bumped out of the wall, the realism is electrifying. The grandeur doesn’t stop with the interior. Shaq nicknamed his party-perfect outdoor area “Shaqapulco” quite aptly. The 95-foot long swimming pool seems to go on forever and has a large waterfall spilling over boulders. It includes a

swim-up bar and a spa large enough for a crowd. The pool deck also has an extensive outdoor kitchen, all of which looks out over Lake Butler, the long private pier with boathouse and the life-size statue of Shaq’s favorite character, Superman, standing at the end overlooking the lake. Shaquille O’Neal - a big man with a big personality and stellar basketball career, is selling his equally large
estate with a personality to match his own. His custom-designed home overlooking Lake Butler outside of Orlando, Florida where he has lived since 1993 is now on the market, priced at $28 million. Cool ways to enjoy your outdoor spaces through the dog days of summer
When warm weather arrives, does your family head outdoors to enjoy your patio or deck? Do they then turn around and head right back into the air-conditioned comfort when summer sun and temperatures make outdoor living spaces too hot to handle? “In many areas of the country, the window of opportunity for enjoying your outdoor space opens in spring and closes when summer’s worst heat hits,” says Mark Dammeyer, director of exterior products for Somfy Systems. “Strong sun, hot temperatures and high humidity can make spending time on your deck or patio too uncomfortable, no matter how much you love the outdoors. Homeowners are always looking for ways to get the most time in their outdoor living spaces.” If your deck time encompasses a month or two in spring and another in the fall, here are some ideas for how you can make your outdoor living spaces cooler, more comfortable and enjoyable all summer long: Made in the shade Fun in the sun is one of summer’s best benefits, but too much sun can keep you off your deck or patio. Not only does direct sun make it too hot
to sit out, sun exposure can damage your patio furnishings, the deck itself and your skin. Retractable awnings are a great - and great-looking - way to shield your outdoor living space from getting too much summer sun. Awnings offer sun protection that can enable you to enjoy your deck more on sunny days, and can even help lower cooling bills by shading window and glass deck doors. Retractable awnings mean you can enjoy the benefits whenever you need them, and hide them when you don’t. Somfy Systems’ motorization solutions have made awnings even handier; a motorized retractable awning effortlessly retracts with a touch of a button. And, an optional sensor, such as the Eolis 3DWirefree (TM) RTS, can detect wind and automatically roll up your awning - even if you’re not home. A Sunis WireFree (TM) RTS Sun Sensor can automatically extend your awning based on the sun’s intensity. Simple innovative operating functions that adapt to your lifestyle. Wet wins the day When temperatures scorch, many of us head for the pool. Nothing cools and refreshes like a dip in the water. Adding a pool to your outdoor
environment may not be practical, so look for smaller-scale options that can lend the cooling power of water to your deck or patio. A simple outdoor fountain adds a splash of coolness and the soothing sound of moving water to your outdoor living space. Or, you can escalate your cooling efforts by installing a mister. You can find plenty of commercially available options that range from simple misting fans that connect to a garden hose to sophisticated systems that spread a light, refreshing spray over a large area. A simple online search will yield plenty of options, including some available at your neighborhood home improvement store. Evaporative coolers are another great way to use moisture to cool the air. While indoor air conditioners draw excess moisture from the air to aid in cooling, evaporative coolers use simple physics to cool air through evaporation of water. These coolers draw the heat needed to evaporate water right out of the air - lowering the ambient temperature around the unit. Evaporative coolers work to cool the air the same way sweat works to cool off your body. Cooler accessorizing
In addition to shade and moisture, choosing cooler accessories like lighter-colored furniture and solar lights (which don’t give off heat like incandescents) can help keep your deck and patio cooler for longer this summer. Look for furniture made of materials that will absorb less heat. That wrought-iron bistro set might look lovely on your deck, but it will heat up hot as a griddle when exposed to hours of summer sun. Fabrics and breathable materials like wicker will handle heat better than dark woods and metal. The dog days of summer don’t mean you have to give up your outdoor enjoyment. With the right combination of shade and cooling techniques, you can enjoy your deck or patio throughout the season. (BPT)
Bright ideas to get your home guest ready
Summer has arrived and vacation season is underway. With the kids home from school, and family and friends anxious to visit, you can expect the stress of getting your home ready to be in full swing. Here are a few helpful tips that will make you a successful host and give your guests a warm welcome. Create a comfort zone No matter what size the room, the one thing you can never compromise on is comfort. A few hospitable touches will make it feel welcoming to your guests. Make sure you’re stocked with the essentials, clean sheets and a choice of firm or fluffy pillows - then add a few extras like bottled water and specialty chocolates to take it to the next level. For a final touch, display any photographs you may have of you and your guests to bring back fun memories. Remember-that bathroom comfort is just as important as the bedroom. In addition to providing any toiletries guests may need, make sure they have plenty of fresh towels. Try following the three towel rule; leave one large towel for showering, one hand towel and a washcloth in the guest room for each person. If visitors will be sharing a bathroom with other members of your family,-be sure to properly plan for the morning rush so guests don’t feel as if they are intruding on your daily routines. Freshen up Take the time to make sure your
home is ready for visitors and conduct a thorough pre-cleaning. Pay special attention to the kitchen, entryways, and other high-traffic areas to ensure you can spend more time playing hostess, rather than housekeeper. Once you are expecting guests, one of the most important rooms to clean is the bathroom. On an unprotected surface, bacteria can double in number every 20 minutes. To ensure your bathroom’s visual cleanliness, a new faucet can make all the difference. The new Moen Ashville two-handle bathroom faucet featuring Microban antimicrobial protection will help guard against stain- and odorcausing bacteria, mold and mildew. Microban technology is built-in to the faucet finish, so it works continuously, even between cleanings. In addition, the Ashville bathroom faucet comes in Moen’s Spot ResistBrushed Nickel finish to resist fingerprints and water spots - helping to make cleaning for guests less of a burden. Time to eat Cooking can always be a dilemma when you have a house full of friends and family. From deciding what everyone likes to eat and what to cook, to preparing all the meals and cleaning up, it can feel like a full-time job. Since food brings people together, next time friends and family are visiting, use meal preparation as a time to connect. Make cooking an activity by giving everyone a job in
the kitchen. When dinnertime rolls around, feel free to have guests pitch in with a few simple tasks. Ask them to pour the wine, choose the music, or set the table, and soon your visitors will be feeling right at home. Once groceries have been purchased, messes made and the food is cooked, it’s time for the dreaded clean up. A Moen survey found that when asked what their least favorite job is following a meal, more than 80 percent of respondents agreed that hand washing pots and pans was the worst; followed by putting food away and cleaning dishes. However, with the right kitchen faucet, cleaning dirty dishes can be more efficient and believe it or not,
maybe even enjoyable. Available at The Home Depot, the new Moen Haysfield pulldown kitchen faucet with MotionSense technology offers a helping hand in the kitchen. It can sense what you’re trying to accomplish and respond to what you need, the moment you need it. With a simple hand movement, you can activate water flow gain greater speed and efficiency at the sink. By taking the time to plan and prepare you’ll make the visit with family and friends special, not just for them, but for everyone. With a few extra steps you will lessen the stress and welcome the good times. For more information about Moen products, visit moen.com. - (BPT)

QUARTER PAGE COLOR This month I have terrific low prices on quarter page full color ad packages. Plus you can choose to either pre pay or pay as you go. But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in San Clemente, Talega, Dana Point? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like these reasonably priced local newspapers which are received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners. This advertising costs you far less money. These five local newspapers are attractive, effective and affordable. Let’s talk today!
