DAY TRIP TO VISIT ‘KING TUT’ AT THE CALIFORNIA MUSEUM OF SCIENCE By Lydia E. Ringwald Orange County friends and families looking for a fun and educational place to visit and take children this summer, may consider a visit to the California Museum of Science to experience amazing ‘King Tut’ art and artifacts from Egypt. The exhibit of extraordinary original works visits the museum in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park for the entire summer and fall of this year, then travels to Europe in a 10 cities worldwide tour over the next seven years. Plan a day trip from Orange County, but first order tickets in advance from the California Museum of Science website to reserve entry to this spectacular show. There are extended evening hours several days a week to accommodate the many visitors. CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE DAY IN SAN CLEMENTE , City hosts fire w orks sho w at the S an C lemente P ier
On Wednesday, July 4, 2018 the City of San Clemente will host its annual Independence Day celebration for the community. At 9:00 p.m. the City will present a spectacular fireworks display from the Municipal Pier. The end of the pier, opposite the entrance, will close at noon on Monday, July 3rd for preliminary preparation and the entire pier will close on Wednesday, July 4th at 8:00 a.m. and remain closed for the entire day. The Fisherman’s Restaurant will be accessible to its patrons. A flyover by the Condor Squadron, consisting of four AT-6 aircraft World War II trainers will take place along the participating coastal cities of Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point and San Clemente. The flyover will begin in Huntington Beach and conclude in San Clemente where it will flyover the coast and conduct a 360 in the air. The full flyover schedule is as follows: • Huntington Beach 5:25 to 5:30 p.m. • Newport Beach 5:35 to 5:40 p.m. • Laguna Beach 5:45 to 5:50 p.m. • Dana Point 5:50 to 5:55 p.m. • San Clemente 5:55 to 6:00 p.m. Members of the public are reminded to not camp out the evening before the fourth of July. The San Clemente Municipal Code (SCMC) prohibits overnight camping in parks and on the beach, and being on the beach
between the hours of midnight and 4:00 a.m. Those in violation of the ordinance can be cited while unattended property left on the beach is not the responsibility of the City. Additionally, beach users are reminded that the consumption of alcohol is prohibited on all City beaches. Members of the public are also reminded that SCMC states that no person shall takeoff, land, or operate an unmanned aircraft or “drone” over any Citypermitted events open to the public, unless granted written or electronic permission by the City. Also, please be advised that dogs are not permitted on the coastal trail on July 4th. All ocean access, including swimming, surfing, and wading, will be closed 1,000 feet in both directions from the pier from 8:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. The purpose is to protect people from the dangers of fireworks fallout. The show risks delays or cancellation if the public does not comply with the closure. To assist with downtown parking, the San Clemente Trolley will be in service from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The regular trolley route will be available from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Please be advised that beginning at 6:00 p.m. the Trolley route will be adjusted to accommodate street closures in the Pier Bowl and downtown area.
The closure will impact stops 1, 3, 4, 14, 15, & 16. Trolley riders looking to utilize the service after the fireworks show can access the trolley at Stop 2, located at the Community Center on the corner of Avenida City Manager’s Office 100 Avenida Presidio San Clemente, California 92672 (949) 361-8322 FAX 361-8283 Del Mar and Calle Seville. Check for any changes to the hours of operation by visiting www.sanclemente.org/trolley. For pedestrian safety and to avoid major traffic problems, San Clemente Police Services will be restricting vehicular traffic between approximately 7:00 and 10:00 p.m. in the entire lower Pier Bowl area adjacent to the pier. Pedestrians should take caution, especially with the increased crowds, to stay clear of the train tracks. The municipal beach and pier will be closed to the public after the fireworks display until the morning of Thursday, July 5th. Following the fireworks show, San Clemente Police Services will conduct traffic control and assist people in exiting the Pier Bowl, diverting them in a systematic fashion to freeways and surface streets. There will be three designated routes out of the Pier Bowl, including: 1) Palizada and directed to the freeway at Palizada or north onto El
Camino Real (two lanes will be open on El Camino Real). 2) Del Mar and diverted onto Presidio. 3) Victoria and diverted southbound onto the freeway at Valencia and Calafia. Although intersections/streets will not be closed, please expect all Pier Bowl streets to be impacted by the exit route, including the following: • East Palizada/Seville • East Seville/Del Mar • East Palizada/Puente • East Ola Vista/Palizada • Del Mar/Ola Vista • East Victoria/Ola Vista • El Camino Real/Palizada • Palizada/Estrella • Del Mar/El Camino Real • Victoria/El Camino Real • El Camino Real/Presidio When leaving the beach, people are asked to take their trash with them. Any trash and litter remaining on the beach will end up polluting the ocean. Roping or blocking-off portions of the beach for private use is not permitted. Also, the City of San Clemente has ordinances prohibiting any fireworks, including Safe & Sane fireworks within the City limits, and ordinances prohibiting the consumption of alcoholic beverages on the beach and pier. San Clemente Police Services will strictly enforce these ordinances.

Irvine Family Heir Weds Susan Jeske, Ms. America 1997 By Kelly Bennett Society Scene Editor Susan R. Jeske and James M. Irvine were married Saturday, June 2nd at five thirty in the afternoon at the Irvine Ranch Historic Park, part of the OC Parks, in Irvine, California. Officiating the ceremony was Eric Rees, CEO of the Jessie Reese Foundation. The bride is the daughter of the late Charles and Denise Jeske of Littleton, Colorado. She was crowned the first Ms. America in 1997 and is the current owner and CEO of the Ms. America Pageant. The groom is the youngest grandson to the late James Irvine II who inherited about 115,000 acres in what is now Orange County, California and formed The Irvine Company and the James Irvine Foundation. He is the son of the late Myford and Gloria Irvine. Myford Irvine was the President of The Irvine Company for eleven years and the President of the James Irvine Foundation for 24 years beginning when it was established in 1937 until his death in 1959. The wedding was held at the Irvine Ranch Historic Park, which is where the original Irvine family home was and is now the Katie Wheeler Library (named after James’s Aunt). James was born and raised in the home as a young boy. The gazebo and gardens where James played as a boy were transformed into a fairyland of roses for the ceremony. Pews were brought in from a 100-year-old church in honor of Susan’s Catholic upbringing. The best man was James’ son, Jeremy Irvine and the groomsmen were Bill White, James’s older brother and Susan’s brothers Tim and Mark Jeske. The Maid of Honor was Megan Augustin, Susan’s niece from Colorado. Bridesmaids were Susan’s sister Cathy Jeske, James’s niece Tracy Gaede and Jory Irvine, James’ daughter. They were dressed in a burgundy suit and full-length dresses carrying pastel pink, yellow and white rose bouquets. Bridal Attendants were Stephanie Mills, Melissa Jeske, Kimberly Latimore, Debbie Garrett, Lea Petersen, Quinn Fry and Kelly Bennett. They were dressed in marine colored full-length dresses carrying pastel pink, yellow and white rose bouquets. Leading
the Bridal Attendants was Stephanie Mills, Ms. America 2015 carrying a stunning custom hand-made brooch bouquet by Jo Anne of Glam Bouquet. The bouquet was filled with over 1500 silver brooches, smaller crystal and rhinestones accent pieces, many that were personal gifts given to Susan from close friends, family and state, regional and national pageant titleholders. The wedding started with a procession beginning at the entrance to the Irvine Family home with the Boy Scouts from Troop #36 carrying American and Canadian flags in honor of the bride and groom’s heritage. The original troop which included James’ older brother Bill, was founded by James’ father, Myford in 1952. Myford Irvine donated and prepared 3000 acres of the Irvine Ranch as the site for the 1953 National Boy Scout Jamboree that hosted over 50,000 troops from all over the world. Myford received the coveted Silver Beaver Award and the Silver Antelope Awards. Following the Boy Scout procession the Groom, Best Man, Groomsmen, Bridal Attendants, Bridesmaids and Maid of Honor proceeded down the Irvine family driveway and down the aisle up to the flower fairyland garden and gazebo. Trumpeters announced the bride as she arrived in a horse drawn carriage which added romance and beauty to this fairytale wedding. The bride was escorted down the aisle by her brother Mike Jeske. She wore a custom made Victorian wedding gown designed by world famous designer Stephen Yearick. It took two years to make of which 180 days (6 months) was used for embroidery, stitching and artwork. More than 10,000 hand-beaded additions were sewn into the couture gown including sequins, pearls and 10 types of multifaceted Austrian Crystals. Swarovski Crystals were used in the bodice and on the sleeves of the gown. Over 100 yards of eleven types of sophisticated fabrics were used and the gown weighed 35 pounds. Fifty people were involved in the creation of the gown which included Stephen Yearick, Leigh Price and Mon Amie’s owner Laurel Mungo. Susan wore the Irvine Rose Garden Tiara which was a gift from James. It

Irvine Photo by HPW was a custom made Victorian rose and garland tiara that had over 200 crystals mounted in silver and platinum representing the Rose Garden of the Irvine Family estate in which they were married. After the couple were pronounced husband and wife, guests were invited to an outdoor area that was reminiscent of the Victorian era with Queen Anne couches, chairs and antique furniture. Guests enjoyed passed appetizers and a bar complete with flutes of Chandon California Blanc De Noirs and wines that contained grapes from Star Vineyard in Rutherford, Napa California in which Mr. Irvine once owned an interest.

The blacksmith played a key role in the Irvine Family Ranch dating back to the 18th Century. Guests were treated to an authentic reenactment and received a hand forged artist heart piece during the cocktail hour. Guests also enjoyed taking pictures with the original Irvine Family buggy with the surrey on top. The reception was held under a magical one of a kind Victorian wedding tent that was created just for the historic Irvine Wedding. It had 300 feet of hand stamped 18 Karat Gold Victorian trim, with over 150 four-inch flower appliques and 300 gold tassels hand sewn around the border breathing life and authenticity to the setting.

Photo by HPW The opulent tent was filled with delicate colors of pastel pinks, blues and gold with flower center pieces of pink and white hydrangeas, pink roses, pink peonies, pale peach stocks, pale pink spray roses, ivory roses and Queen Ann lace bursting out from a three-foot gold stand covered in white roses, green leaves and dripping of pearls on every table that was covered with a blue tablecloth and embroidered pearl lace overlay. Commemorative gifts in honor of Susan and James’s wedding were placed at each guest setting. Modjeska Bauer’s Candies that date back to the 1800’s and named after the famous actress Madam Helena Modjeska who was friends and neighbors with James Irvine II. He named his daughter Katherine Helena Irvine after her. A ticket to tour her home was included as well as a ticket to tour the Irvine Historical Museum was given to each guest. After the couple made their grand entrance to the sound of trumpets,
they danced their first dance to the song “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri. The dinner menu was a tribute to the success of the Irvine Ranch which was the largest agricultural enterprises in the United States and according to an article in the 1910 Los Angeles Times, “one of the greatest cultivated farms in the world.” Some of the items were selected because they were once grown or raised on the Irvine Ranch. Guests enjoyed a cold beet and mixed green salad, slow roasted tri-tip, Cornell style grilled chicken thighs with roasted asparagus, potato salad and Irvine Ranch Baked Beans. After dinner, everyone enjoyed the handmade cake that stood 50 inches tall and weighed over 150 pounds. Lovingly wrapped in white frosting that had handmade 30 fondant bows and sugar flowers the cake was accented with Swarovski Crystals and edible 18 Karat Gold. Blueberry Vanilla Ice Cream Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting
Prep time: 20 minutes Freezing time: 6-12 hours Servings: 10-12 10 ounces (about 2 cups) fresh blueberries, cold, plus extra for decorating 16.9 ounces heavy whipping cream, cold 6 ounces white granulated sugar, chilled 1 packet The Curious Creamery Vanilla Ice Cream Cake Mix 1 tub (14 ounces) cream cheese frosting sliced strawberries In blender or food processor, puree 10 ounces blueberries until smooth then place in refrigerator. Pour heavy whipping cream in bowl of stand mixer fitted with whisk attachment. Add sugar. Pour in ice cream cake mix and then add blueberry puree. Mix on low for 30 seconds. Cover mixing bowl with dish towel to prevent splattering. Turn mixer to high and mix for 4 minutes. The mixture will become wavy and creamy, and almost double in volume. Pour mixture into 9-inch springform pan. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze at least 6 hours. Once frozen, ice cream cake will easily release from pan. Remove sides of pan and decorate cake with frosting and berries. Return to freezer until ready to slice and serve.

Facts A bout the F ourth of J uly: A merica’ s I ndependence D ay By Jennifer Phillips The 4th of July marks the signing of the Declaration of Independence by the men who are responsible for the start of the United States of America. In 1776, on July 2nd, the Continental Congress met to discuss independence. There was much political unrest at the time, with the thirteen colonies chafing under the rule of a King who was an entire ocean away. There were feelings of resentment over the lack of representation in England, for the Colonies. In short, the citizens of the original Colonies were unhappy, and the Continental Congress felt it was time to take the next step forward, towards independence, and self-rule. Two days after this meeting, on July 4th, these men signed a document, drafted by Thomas Jefferson, declaring the intentions of the Colonies to be free from the rule of the kingdom of Great Britain. What followed was a long, bitter war lasting roughly eight years. It eventually involved not only England and the United States, but also France, Spain and the Dutch Republic. The war ended in 1783, and the United States were finally free to
govern themselves, but the date most celebrated is the date that began it all; the Fourth of July. While the 4th of July has only been an official paid holiday for federal employees since 1941, it has been celebrated thoroughly since the very start. Today the 4th of July is celebrated in the United States with parades, fireworks, picnics and extravagant displays of patriotism. It has been that way for a long time, too. The list below illustrates some of the ways that this holiday has been celebrated in the past. * 1777- Thirteen gunshots were fired (once in the morning, and again in the evening) on July 4th in Rhode Island. Philadelphia held an official dinner, complete with toasts, 13-gun salutes, speeches, songs, parades and, yes, fireworks. * 1778- George Washington’s soldiers received a double ration of rum and an artillery salute. John Adams and Benjamin Franklin, acting as ambassadors to France, held a celebration dinner for their fellow Americans. * 1779- July 4th fell on a holiday, and was celebrated on Monday instead.
* 1781- Massachusetts was the first state to recognize July 4th as an official state holiday. * 1791- The first use recorded use of the name “Independence Day” is found in this year. * 1941- The 4th of July is declared a paid holiday for federal employees. The traditions of the 4th of July celebrations run deep. It inspires in many American citizens feelings of patriotism, and pride in their country. It’s also a holiday for fun and family. Some of the long-standing celebrations in the United States include: * Since 1785, Bristol, Rhode Island’s Fourth of July Parade has occurred annually. This makes it the oldest continuous Independence day celebration in the United States. * Since 1916, Nathan’s Hot Dog Contest has been held at Coney Island every 4th of July. The contest supposedly started as a way to settle an argument between four immigrants, over who was the most patriotic. * During the last week of June, since 1959, Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario hold a mutual celebration of both Independence Day and Canada Day. The celebration
ends with a large fireworks display over the Detroit River. Clearly, Americans hold a special place in their hearts for this holiday, even this many years later. Many wars have been fought, and many lives lost, in the name of freedom and independence. Even in times of political unrest and economic struggle, Americans can, on this day, look back at their long, rich history of freedom and independence, and feel a sense of gratitude to, and pride in, their forefathers, and the men who followed in their footsteps.
