A Better Breakfast for Busy Families Eating breakfast is a good idea, but for busy families, it can be hard to find a quick and easy option the whole family enjoys. Here are a few ideas to help get a nutritious and delicious breakfast on the table, even when you’re short on time. Set the table the night before. Put dishes, silverware and glasses in place, then add nonperishables in the morning. If you’ll want coffee, program your coffeemaker and have cups and add-ins in place. Having everything ready gives you more time to enjoy breakfast as a family. Make things simple by getting one cereal the whole family will enjoy, such as Post Honey Bunches of Oats. Kids of all ages will love the honey-sweetened taste, and parents will feel good knowing it’s a wholesome cereal that provides essential vitamins and minerals with at least 8g whole grain per serving*. With a delicious choice sure to please everyone, have the cereal within easy reach so kids can serve themselves. To help with portion control, divvy up servings into baggies so it’s easy for everyone to get the right amount. Let everyone customize their breakfast. It doesn’t take much time to make a parfait – everyone can layer their favorite yogurt with different fruits and crunchy cereal. Make individual smoothies, or set out various cereal toppings like yogurt, nuts, berries or fruits. Keep a stash of wholesome on-the-go breakfasts in case you’re running late. Whole fruit, yogurt cups, and these Cranberry Orange Muffins make it easy to grab and go, without missing the most important meal of the day.

By Nancy Shepherd For years it was believed that exercise for fitness had to be very strenuous to have any noticeable benefit. However, it is now recognized that something as simple as walking can be as efficient as more rigorous activities. The key is the type of walking you do. Simply strolling is better than nothing; it at least gets you moving and keeps your joints limber. But if you’re walking to exercise for fitness, you’ll need to step up the pace. Depending on your current health and your fitness goals, you can choose from brisk walking, power walking, and pole walking. Brisk walking can help you lose weight, improve your mood, manage Type 2 diabetes, lower blood pressure, and normalize cholesterol. Done consistently, it is as effective for reducing the risk of heart attack as jogging. As a weight-bearing exercise, it also contributes to strong bones and reduces risk from osteoporosis. All it takes is a good, supportive pair of walking shoes and enough space to work up to a good pace. To gain the benefits of brisk walking, your speed should be fast enough to raise your heart rate, but still allow you to comfortably carry on a conversation. After a five to ten minute warm-up at a slower pace, increase to the brisk pace and maintain it for at least 30 minutes. You’ll get best results from engaging in the activity no fewer than five days a week.

The next level of walking for fitness is power walking. At this level you can burn almost as many calories as jogging but without the jarring impact on your joints. In one study, women who incorporated three power walks per week into their walking routines lost five times as much belly fat than women whose workouts consisted of only brisk walking -- even though they burned the same number of calories. To take your workout to the power walking level, do your warm-up walk, then bend your elbows and swing your arms as you stride energetically. Strive for a pace of four miles an hour, an intensity at which conversation is no longer comfortable. Pole walking gives you all the benefits of power walking and then some. Adding poles to your walking routine involves more muscles of the upper body, so you burn more calories and tone your upper body as well as your legs. Additionally, the poles provide stability and relieve some of the load from the hips and knees, which may make it easier for older people to take part. Walking with poles results in a greater aerobic workout without having to walk any faster. Even though using the poles raises the heart rate higher and burns more calories than walking without poles, walkers don’t perceive the exertion

as harder. It has also been reported to relieve neck and shoulder pain. To pole walk correctly, it is best to get some instruction so you’ll get the most from your efforts. You’ll learn the proper length for your poles and the most effective techniques. Generally, walking with poles is like power walking, except that you will push down and back on the poles to propel yourself more powerfully with each stride. There’s no longer any excuse for not working out. Walking to exercise makes improved fitness accessible to nearly everyone. Start where you are and do as much as you can do. As your fitness improves, step up to the next level of walking and you’ll be taking positive steps toward better health.

We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face... we must do that which we think we cannot. -Eleanor Roosevelt The San Clemente News

If required by the provisions of section 2923.5 of the California Civil Code, the declaration from the mortgagee, beneficiary or authorized agent is attached to the Notice of Trustee’s Sale duly recorded with the appropriate County Recorder’s Office. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-281-8219 or visit this Internet Web site www.recontrustco.com, using the file number assigned to this case TS No. 12-0011828. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. 13 Lucky Tips for Better Health in 2013 Simple Ways to Eat Smart and Move More for Your Healthiest - and Maybe Even Luckiest - Year

By Kim Galeaz, RD CD Happy New Year! It’s the time of year when we all make resolutions to eat better, exercise more and get rid of the stress. If you failed to reach your goals last year or need a little help keeping up the momentum, the New Year presents another chance. By following these 13 smart-eating and active lifestyle tips, you just might have your healthiest - and luckiest year ever! 1. Eat breakfast EVERY day. Research shows that breakfast eaters are more alert and productive throughout the morning and that they are more likely to achieve or maintain a healthy weight. 2. Go for greens. Reach for green leafy vegetables like kale, collard, turnip and mustard greens more often. They are filled with bone-building vitamin K and numerous antioxidants, and according to folklore, may bring good luck because their leaves resemble money. 3. Fall in love with lentils and legumes. Learn to love dried beans like pinto, black, navy and garbanzo. Page 18

They’re all rich in fiber and other nutrients that help fight cancer and heart disease. In Italy, lentils resemble coinshaped money, so enjoy lentil soup for financial prosperity during 2013! 4. Choose whole grains vs. white refined. Whole grains can help reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease and diabetes and contribute to healthy weight maintanance. Choose whole wheat pizza crust, whole wheat penne pasta, brown rice, quinoa, popcorn, bulgur or oatmeal. 5. Have your cake and eat it, too. Or cookies, candy and donuts, as well. Sticking with your resolution doesn’t mean you have to give up all of your favorite sweet treats. Just have them in sensible, smaller portions. Try eating two bite-size cookies instead of a big one. Or cut your cake slice in half. Ultimately, sugar can have a place in a balanced diet so keep the things you love. 6. Go fishing. Eat more fish for those valuable omega-3 fats that promote a healthy heart and may help reduce incidence of depression. Many countries start the New Year

with fish since it represents good fortune, abundance and long life. 7. Get hoppin’! First, make a batch of Hoppin’ John. It’s a Southern dish of nutrient-rich black-eyed peas, onion, rice and bacon or sausage thought to bring good luck. Second, start hopping up and down because even hopping counts as valuable calorie-burning activity! 8. Become a Lean Mean Protein Machine. Beef and pork can be part of a healthy diet. Just choose lean cuts with “loin” and “round” in the name like sirloin and tenderloin (there are 7 lean pork and at least 29 lean beef cuts) and enjoy moderate, 3-ounce portions. 9. Say yes to low- and no-calorie beverages. Research shows they’re not only safe to enjoy, but they can help you reach and maintain a healthy weight. So there’s no need to give up your Diet Coke, flavored water or diet tea this year. Plus, they provide essential fluids since ALL beverages hydrate! 10. Spice it up. From cinnamon, cloves, cumin and oregano, to rose-

mary, red pepper, paprika and turmeric, spices are a surprising source of powerful antioxidants. Do as the Danish do on New Year’s and eat stewed kale sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon for good luck and wealth. 11. Blend and balance. Substitute, switch and/or boost ingredients in recipes to maximize nutrients and keep the flavor. For example, make your famous mac and cheese with whole wheat elbows, low-fat milk, reduced fat cheddar cheese and add some peas, too. 12. Shop smart. You don’t always have to choose fresh fruits and vegetables to get nutrients. ALL forms count, including frozen, canned and dried. And, they may be more budgetfriendly. 13. Move more. Don’t get overwhelmed with “exercising.” Just think of realistic ways to add more daily activity. Park farther away. Take the steps. Dance to your favorite tunes. Just get moving to burn calories and be a healthier you in 2013!
