12 Fashion Suggestions for Men Over 50 By Laurie Jo Miller Farr These days, men over 50 can look great...and, many do! Hollywood brings us certified foxes including George Clooney, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Denzel Washington, Hugh Grant, Antonio Banderas. Television brings us Matt Lauer and Brian Williams, frequent fixtures on the best-dressed list. Not to mention, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are over 50 and over 60, respectively. Most importantly, quality and a good fit to whatever you wear are the two most important things to get right after age 50.
A good watch and optional wedding band is all the jewelry a well-dressed man needs. Keep shoes in good condition and regularly polished. Wear black shoes with a black belt for a dressier look. Get a new belt rather than showing the buckle holes that no longer fit. Add a pocket square? Yes.
Do get a well-tailored blazer A sharp navy blazer, a seersucker for summer and a tweed sport coat for fall and winter are go-to items that every man should have for those smart casual occasions when a jacket is required. Do have a good dark suit Coordinate with gray trousers or khakis Even if you aren’t wearing a suit every- or jeans and a polo shirt to look your day, have a couple on hand in dark navy relaxed best. and gray. Do not use the plastic bags for storage, although they can be useful when packing for a suitcase full of wrinkle-free items on arrival. Don’t scrimp on your suit Pulling out a classic, well-fitting suit for a special occasion will make you feel great. This is one item you do not want to nickel and dime, which may mean it’s time for a new fitting. Don’t wear old white shirts Once that crisp white shirt is no longer crisp nor white, it’s time to get it off your back. My father used to pass them down to his daughters for our messy arts and crafts playtime or cookie baking sessions.
Men over 50 don’t belong in too-tight shirts, decal T-shirts, puffy down jackets, biker jackets, leather bombers, or dangly earrings. Even the 62-year-old intrepid adventurer, Sir Richard Branson, normally wears a blazer, a white shirt, and jeans.

BROADWAY’S “WICKED DIVAS” DEFY GRAVITY TO JUMP START PACIFIC SYMPHONY’S 2012-13 POPS CONCERT SERIES
Two star-studded singers with powerhouse voices from the Tonyaward winning musical “Wicked” join Pacific Symphony for a thrilling, high-energy concert of Broadway and popular tunes to kick off the 2012-13 Pops series. Led by Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman, the Symphony’s collaboration with Alli Mauzey (Glinda) and Julia Murney (Elphaba)—two lead performers from the Broadway and national tours of “Wicked”—add up to a captivating concert of musical favorites illuminated by the full symphony orchestra. Featuring audience favorites from “Chicago,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Titanic,” “Wicked,” “The Wizard of Oz” and more, the concert takes place Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 15-17, at 8 p.m., in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Tickets are $25-$185; for more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 755-5799 or visit PacificSymphony.org. “I am thrilled to be joining the extraordinary Pacific Symphony musicians as we begin another exciting season,” says Maestro Kaufman. “Our audiences are in for a real treat as the orchestra is joined by two of Broadway’s brightest stars—Alli Mauzey and Julia Murney— singing music from some of most legendary shows. Pit orchestras on Page 4
Broadway are usually only around 24 musicians, so just imagine the incredible sound of Pacific Symphony playing this music! It’s going to be something very special.” Adding to the extravagant evening of music and entertainment—and in celebration of the opening of the Pops concert series—the Pacific Symphony League hosts a pre-concert party on Friday, Nov. 16, at 5:30 p.m. Taking place in the newly remodeled Center Club, the evening, chaired by League member Marion Brockett, includes dinner, signature cocktails and a special appearance by Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman and the Divas themselves (!), as well as live music. Tickets for the event are $150, with funds benefiting Pacific Symphony’s educational programs. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Leslie Fay Vaeth at lvaeth@pacificsymphony.org or call (714) 876-2374. “We begin with a lovely dinner at the beautiful Center Club before enjoying a fantastic Pacific Symphony Pops experience with the ‘Wicked Divas,’” says event-chair Brockett. “Music lovers will come together for an elegant evening of food, great music and fun, including cocktails—pink (for Glinda) and green (for Elphaba)— and a special appearance by the

Divas themselves! How could there be a better way to spend an evening? “I was brought up with classical music,” says Brockett. “I was not permitted to listen to the radio, rock and roll, folk, jazz or any modern music. Then I married a man who loves it all! He has added so much to my life by broadening my experiences through a love of all music. I always learn something new and appreciate the musical journey. Education, in all its forms, offers the best of what we have to give to future generations. Supporting Pacific Symphony and their educational programming is just a natural extension of trying to give back to the community and give others opportunities to grow.” The orchestra opens the program with the Overture from “Gypsy” and selections from Bizet’s Spanish-infused “Carmen,” followed by Mauzey and Murney singing “All That Jazz”from “Chicago,” hits from “Ragtime,” “Think of Me” from “Phantom of the Opera” and “Ring Them Bells,” in the style of the diva herself—Liza Minnelli. They return to the stage after intermission for “My Heart Will Go On” from “Titanic,” “Over the Rainbow” from the “The Wizard of Oz” and give a finale of songs from “Wicked.” Mauzey, an Anaheim Hills native, made her first Broadway debut in
2003 as Brenda in “Hairspray,” though her “big break” came from starring as Lenora in the Broadway hit, “Cry Baby;” from which she won a Theatre World Award and was nominated for a Drama League Award. Mauzey has also starred as Glinda on Broadway and the national tour of “Wicked.” She recently re-joined the Broadway cast. Murney last appeared on Broadway as Elphaba in “Wicked” after playing the role on the National Tour for which she received an Acclaim Award. Other New York credits include a myriad of shows such as “Lennon,” “The Vagina Monologues,” “Saved” and more. She has also appeared in a number of television shows such as “30 Rock,” “Sex and the City,” “Brothers and Sisters” and more. Her recordings include the Grammynominated Actor’s Fund Benefit of “Hair” and her first solo album, “I’m Not Waiting.” Friday’s concert is sponsored by the Pacific Symphony League. The Symphony’s Pops series receives additional support from The Westin South Coast Plaza, American Airlines, K-Earth 101 and PBS SoCal.

STOMP AND SEGERSTROM CENTER FOR THE ARTS: EXCITING STOMPPORTUNITIES
STOMP and Segerstrom Center for the Arts are offering great ways to heighten your STOMP experience. First, to add some raucous fun and become an un-official STOMPER, patrons can stop by Founders Hall 75 minutes before any performance and participate in STOMPing Grounds, where audience members are given the opportunity to jam out with found items similar to props used in show. Ushers will be on hand to point guests towards Founders Hall where these artist-guided activities will take place, just steps away from Segerstrom Hall where they will enjoy the full performance. Second, you can join the fight to STOMP Out Hunger. As a part of the STOMP Out Hunger initiative, patrons are encouraged to bring canned goods with them which will be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank. In partnership with more than 470 member charities, including church pantries, shelters, senior centers, rehabilitation centers, homes for abused women and children and many other emergency assistance organizations, Second Harvest helps to feed more than 240,000 individuals each month. There will be collection containers in the lobbies at all performances. STOMP uses everything but conventional percussion instruments dustbins, tea chests, radiator hoses, boots, hub caps - to fill the stage with a compelling and unique act that is often imitated but never duplicated. STOMPing Grounds A non-traditional drumming experience will be available in Founders Hall before each STOMP performance. Urban percussion performer and Segerstrom Center Arts Teach artist Andrew Grueschow will lead activities with found objects (tubs, water bottles, trash cans, plastic bags, etc.) and turn any patron into an unofficial “STOMPER.” Multiple stations will be set up where ticket holders can explore objects and sounds. Grueschow, who has studied
and performed African music and dance since 1992 is a graduate of Cal Arts and teaches at his alma mater. STOMP Out Hunger STOMP has made it its mission to partner with food banks across the country to STOMP Out Hunger. The show began its quest to reduce hunger in North America with a partnership with Philabundance, the Philadelphia region’s largest hunger relief organization, in December of 2007. The producers were looking for a way to give back to the community and with the timing of the holidays the partnership was a natural one. However, due to the current economic climate including high unemployment rates and state budget cuts, hunger organizations have seen an overwhelming demand for food assistance. As such, STOMP has dedicated itself to bringing attention to the heightened needs of food charities across the country all year round by sponsoring canned food drives and donating ticket proceeds in as many cities as possible. Cities in which STOMP has conducted a STOMP Out Hunger campaign include Philadelphia, PA, Calgary, Canada, Peoria, IL, Detroit, MI, Toronto, Canada, Jacksonville, FL, Orlando, FL, Aurora, IL and Honolulu, HI, just to name a few. Single tickets, which start at $20, are available online at SCFTA.org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. For inquiries about group ticket savings for 10 or more, call the Group Services office at (714) 755-0236. The TTY number is (714) 556-2746. The 2 p.m. performance on Saturday, October 13 will include audio description for patrons with visual impairments. Cox Media is the Media Partner of the Broadway and Curtain Call Series. Segerstrom Center applauds Acura, the Official Automotive Sponsor of the Center. For more information, please visit: www.stomponline.com.

Laura’s House Annual Gala “Music of the Night” Nets $150,000 Around 275 guests arrived at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa dressed in attire inspired by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera,” for the Laura’s House annual gala, “Music of the Night.” From the reception area to the silent auction to the grand ballroom, it was a sea of ornate feathered masks as $150,000 was raised to help fund the vital programs and services that the organization provides to individuals and families impacted by domestic violence. “We are immensely grateful to everyone who attended our annual gala this year, and helped to make it such a huge success by opening their hearts and wallets to provide us with the financial support that we need to sustain the programs and services that we provide to individuals and families that are impacted by domestic violence here in Orange County, and beyond,” said Margaret Bayston, CEO and Executive Director, Laura’s House. “Music of the Night” began with a reception for Major Donors to the recently completed Cornerstone Capital Campaign, a $4.5 million fundraising initiative that enabled Laura’s House to rebuild its emergency shelter, and purchase a separate facility for its Step Ahead Transitional Housing Program for shelter graduates. Laura’s House board members and supporters gathered to recognized Orange County philanthropist Anne MacPherson, along with Campaign chair Wayne Pinnell and his wife Karen; and, Laura Khouri, Chair of the Laura’s House Board of Directors, for their steadfast support in helping to achieve the Campaign’s fundraising goals. Each of the honorees received a hand selected crystal cut bowl or vase from Tiffany & Co. During the cocktail reception guests munched on selection of passed hors d’oeuvres and perused a silent auction featuring more than 200 items including exciting travel and entertainment experiences, culinary adventures, and a “Wall of Wine” offering a seemingly endless selection of top-rated wines and tasting experiences from around the world. Following the silent auction, guests were invited in the Grand Pacific Ballroom for the dinner and program, featuring Vikki Vargas, Orange County Bureau Chief for NBC4 as Master of Ceremonies. Khouri was presented with the “Power Packed Philanthropy Award,” which recognized her for her generous contributions to Laura’s House. This year’s Crystal Heart Awards honorees were Orange County philanthropist Anne MacPherson, representing The Joe MacPherson Foundation and Edwards Lifesciences for their corporate philanthropy. MacPherson was again recognized by Laura’s House for her generous contributions to the Cornerstone Capital Campaign and commitment to the Laura’s House mission. Amanda Fowler, Executive Director of Global Corporate Giving, accepted the award on behalf of Edwards Lifesciences, which was honored for its spirit of philanthropy, commitment to the Laura’s House mission and dedication to assisting victims of domestic violence through their corporate giving initiatives and volunteer program. Three shelter graduates then came to the stage, to share their testimony of how Laura’s House helped them, before debuting its new video, “Kim’s Story,” which featured a woman who was able to rebuild a life that was free of domestic violence with the help she received while living in the Laura’s House Emergency Shelter. Auctioneer Mike Shumard took the stage for the “Rebuild a Life” auction to solicit sponsorships for the Laura’s House Emergency Shelter, Transitional Living Center, Counseling and Resource Center, Legal Advocacy program, and Healthy Emotions and Attitudes for Teens in Relationships (H.E.A.R.T.) community outreach program, and basic needs. The live auction that followed featured a French vacation with a two-night stay at the luxurious Hotel le Bristol in Paris, followed by a three-night stay at any one of the more than 520 Small Luxury Hotels of the World properties worldwide; two VIP tickets for a live broadcast of Season 15 of “Dancing with the Stars”, a onePage 12

After dinner, guests were invited to enjoy dancing and lively, musical entertainment from the Sensation Showband. Over the past eighteen years, Laura’s House has provided residential shelter and support services to nearly 3,500 families, and counseling, life skills education and legal assistance to over 40,000 individuals. The mission of Laura’s House is to change the social beliefs, attitudes and the behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence while creating a safe space in which to empower individuals and families affected by abuse. 5th Annual SCMFO Variety Show Set for San Clemente
San Clemente Military Family Outreach (SCMFO), an all-volunteer nonprofit that provides a financial safety net for Marine families in north Camp Pendleton, is gearing up for its annual Variety Show fundraiser scheduled for October 27 at the San Clemente Community Center. The proceeds go to provide a Thanksgiving distribution of turkeys and dinner “fixings” for up to one thousand low-income military families in Pendleton’s San Onofre area. The show itself has become a fixture on the local entertainment scene and is heavily promoted in the south county area. The program features clean comedy and musical entertainment from gifted amateurs and professional talent. The 2012 show, entitled “ENCORE!”, opens with soloists from the “Stars of Tomorrow” vocal competition among Orange County high schools, followed by a return engagement by concert pianist David Dunford (who wowed 2011 showgoers), and wraps up the featured musical segment with Beach Boys classics by the #1 rated surfer band, Woodie and the Longboards. The Comedy spotlight will fall on Jimmy Brogan, one of America’s top standup comics and joke writer for Jay Leno. Other attractions include a snack counter and a raffle with prizes valued at over $2,000 total. Reserved Table tickets are $35 in limited supply, with Open seating at $25 general. admission available. Tickets may also be purchased locally at St. Andrew’s By the Sea UMC office, 2001 Frontera on M-W-Th 9am to 2 pm., on site at the event, or online at www.militaryfamilyoutreach.com.
San Clemente City Hall will be open on election nighT San Clemente City Hall will be open on election night, November 6, 2012 from 8:00 p.m. until approximately 12:00 a.m. to monitor election results being reported by the Orange County Registrar of Voters. The public is welcome to join us. We will have a large screen set up so that we can keep track of voting updates that are posted on line from the Registrar. We will also have a television set up so that we can monitor national election results being reported from CNN. Persons can also keep up to date on election results by tuning in to Cable Channel 30 or Channel 854 (for high definition televisions), by calling City Hall at 949.361.8200, or by accessing the Orange County Registrar of Voters’ website directly at www.ocvote.com Typically the first election results come in around 8:05 p.m. (these will be vote-by-mail ballots). Then, typically there is a long lull (approximately 1-1/2 hours) before the precinct votes start to trickle in. This is because the poll workers have paperwork to complete after the polls close at 8:00 p.m. When they are finished, the ballots are delivered to County personnel in the City Hall parking lot (which is being used as a ballot collection center). After the ballots are collected from the various polling sites, they will be driven to the Registrar of Voters office for counting. The San Clemente News

The Ten Commandments of Men’s Formal Fashion by Zachary Wanderson The long anticipated Ten Commandments of Men’s Formal Fashion are here. I’m sorry I promised this long ago and failed to write it sooner, but I find the principles to still be relevant today. Since I consider myself to be a pro in men’s formal fashion, particularly considering this blog post, I am open to going shopping to help you or that special someone in your life that just can’t seem to really make formal look formal. In order to make this post aesthetically pleasing and give you an idea of what I am talking about, I have included some pictures. As much as I wanted to utilize this as a post to catch all of the violations I found in public, I simply didn’t have the time or patience. But here we go. 1) Thou shalt not wear tennis, running, basketball shoes or flip flops in formal settings. Oh heavens, you ruined all chance of formalism. I can’t stop staring at your shoes. All I can think is, “Did you bring athlete’s foot along with you?”
2) Thou shalt not wear white socks.

By polyester, I compare it to drapes or tablecloths from the 1970s or something that Maria would make play-clothes out of for the Von Trapp family.
7) Thou shalt not bring notice to the fact that you’re wearing a shirt under your formal shirt in the chest area. So for those of you who have “smiles” going on and we can see the neckline of your undershirt, please don’t. Don’t wear v-necks or beaters or any analogous shirts. I highly recommend a full undershirt. This is a good choice. Put the shoes and the belt right next to each other, thus ensuring that they are the same color or shade. Some consider this kind of ballsy, but white belts and white shoes are acceptable. Just be confident in wearing them and you’ll be fine. But they both need to be white. And clean white if you decide to try it. The final example, I was rather impressed by. He matched the pattern and color between his belt and shoes.

This illustration is exactly what you should be going for. Look at the beautiful flat front, right sized butt fit and leg circumference, and nice flow over the shoe. This is what you should be looking for, rather than lint stuck in some distracting cuff.
Well done. 9) Thou shalt not wear oversized suits, old suits, or suits with poor patterns. to find the next suit to wear in a “Dumb and Dumber” remake.
Please, when you come home from your long world tour, get rid of your suit. Don’t donate it and pass on the disgustingness. Destroy it. Likely, you already destroyed it plenty on your mission. Hence why you should stop wearing it. And I understand your trainer’s-trainer, former assistant to the president used to own that suit, but it wasn’t tailored for you. So please rid yourself of it. The poor-patterned suit. Took one great concept (the pinstripe) and DESTROYED it. There is a much better way to get some color going on.
May I suggest a classy threepiece. They are generally slimming and draw attention (in a very good way). Also, pinstripes are a great pattern to shoot for. If wearing pinstripes, be careful when wearing a striped shirt also. If the pinstripes are narrow and close together, try to do similarly with the shirt. But if the pin stripes are fat and far apart, then don’t mix with a close, narrow stripe in the shirt. Be weary of plaid or complete solid, those are generally two extremes. Either too much or too little is going on. Try to find a happy-medium. If you wear a solid, make sure there is some texture to it, that sets the suit apart. Here is a much better choice with pinstripes. Utilizing a dark colored suit with a white pinstripe, they utilized a nice color to accentuate the suit and to still draw good attention. I also really appreciate the nice use of the handkerchief. This is a nice solid touch. Just be sure it is either the same color or the same pattern as the tie.
I am sure not everyone is abiding by these rules perfectly. If you’re not, likely you are struggling with dressing formall y. I j u s t w a n t e d t o give you my secrets to 10) Thou shalt not wear the the trade. And make it so I’m not focusing on all the distractions going on.
