Hands-On Architecture Toys to Make Learning Fun By Miss Fortune Whether you are a homeschooler or the parent of a mainstream educated child, you can use architecture themed building kits and toys to help with history, motor skills, building principals and geography. Lego is one of the leaders in large scale architecture building systems; one of the biggest perks to investing in them is that they can use incorporated with other Lego sets and bulk packs to create new or modified scenes. There are a lot of companies that make specialty building systems and kits, some of them are better than others in regards to price and replay value. Age recommendations are just that, a suggestion. If your child has building experience they might be able to tackle some of the more advanced systems.

ArchiQuest Building System: Priced at about seventy dollars, this kits are made up of wood blocks that have printed images on them. There are endless ways to arrange them to make different types of structures in different sizes. The beauty of the system is that you can keep adding to it to make larger scenes and structures. This system was something that my boys loved and spend hours using. From it their love of Lego blossomed but the ArchiQuest system is not interlocking so it requires more planning when doing something with five or six levels. This is something that kids of all ages can use and it is something that can grow with them. In addition to the medieval theme there are also Egyptian and fantasy themed sets that you can get. While they are expensive they are something that will last a long time.
Nanoblock Building Systems: Nanoblock uses the same type of building system as Lego; pegged or studded pieces that interlock to form a shape or design. The prices on most of the specialty Nanoblock sets are about half the price of what you would pay for Lego but there is a noticeable difference in the type of plastic used as well as the overall feel of them. From an educational standpoint the structured sets are amazing; The Easter Island set was one of the first sets I purchased and it was something that the boys loved building. Ultimately they took the
3-D Puzzles: If you have an older child that loves a challenge then 3-D puzzles are worth looking in to. They can be a little hard to get used to since you are not building a traditional flat puzzle but rather something that has sides to it. We have had 3-D puzzles from a couple of different companies like Ravensburger and Puzzle Plex over the years. The ones Page 2

Professional Student/Gallery Mentoring Program The 11th annual collaboration between Laguna College of Art & Design and First Thursday’s Art Walk member galleries culminates on December 6 from 6-9 pm when 17 Laguna Beach galleries, volunteering as mentors, will feature original works by Fine Arts seniors of Laguna College of Art & Design during the Art Walk. The students will be present at each gallery exhibiting their work, which is available for sale. Sale proceeds will benefit student artists and the First Thursdays Art Walk LCAD Scholarship Fund. The Student/Gallery Mentoring Program was launched by First Thursday’s member and current LCAD Professor Robin Fuld. The program pairs senior students in the Fine Arts Professional Studies class with First Thursday’s professional art galleries and is designed to demonstrate the intricacies involved in the business of operating a gallery and professionally exhibiting artwork. Most of the students have never exhibited their work professionally, with the exception of juried student exhibitions at the college. The Professional Studies class is designed to teach students the fun-
damentals of work in the professional arena. The program includes handson work with representatives from the galleries whose expertise helps guide the students and to broaden the scope of their art world experience. An integral part of LCAD’s mission is to provide students with the skills and education necessary to prepare them for today’s complex and changing job market. The success of the college as well as the success of alumni resides in their ability to engage in fulfilling careers. “Every year, I hope to instill in my students the importance of the business side of art, and not to fear it. There is so much help available to the emerging artist, and now they have a chance to work with industry professionals through the mentoring program who will answer their every question and show them the ropes. Besides having the passion and discipline for their art, it is essential to have knowledge of the business side,” said Robin Fuld Professor of Professional Studies and Director of Career Services. Robin points out that not all fine artists who graduate have set their sights on gallery representation. “The field of art has many diverse
components. Career opportunities encompass teachers, commission portrait painters, art advisors, muralists, scene painters for animation studios, police sketch artist, and the list goes on and on. Most students graduating with a Bachelor’s degree have yet to acquire the amount of consistent work necessary for gallery representation. Many will continue on to a graduate program to hone their skills and create that work. Many will need to work at least part-time to support their education if they’re not
receiving some other form of financial assistance. It’s a balancing act, and these students are fueled by their passion and need to create.” “I assign students to galleries for a variety of reasons and it’s just not because they are visually a perfect match. How could most be? They are still students exploring the direction of their work. It’s serendipitous that this year’s students have quite specific interests that they share in common with their gallery and have a unique opportunity to cultivate it.”

The City of San Clemente is a proud sponsor of the holiday train event. by Bob Crittendon Ear-to-ear smiles were the order of the day as hundreds of Marine family members lined up early and made their way through the “turkey line” Monday in north Camp Pendleton. The occasion was the annual thanksgiving dinner giveaway sponsored by San Clemente Military Family Outreach (SCMFO), and 725 plump frozen turkeys and pumpkin pies were only a part of the distribution. At other food stations were sacks containing roasting pans, stuffing mix, gravy, packaged potatoes, canned corn, cranberry sauce, green beans, and yams-- all being handed out to low income families by Outreach volunteers supported by area churches, scout troops and even off-duty Marines. This is the tenth annual turkey giveaway and targets those base housing units in north Camp Pendleton that include families of Marines in the USMC School of Infantry, San Mateo, Las Pulgas, Talega and Camp Horno. These are typically young military families with a member currently in training or already deployed, and often facing severe financial stress at home. Non-profit SCMFO assists struggling families with emergency needs all year around, but the thanksgiving event seems to gain a higher public profile, says outreach chairperson Kathy Morea, “The season is a special time for all of us,” says Morea, “but it is also one with a lot pressure for those in need. We can’t overlook those families, and we know that they really appreciate a helping hand.”

Cut your holiday expenses
By Jason Alderman The closer the holidays loom, the less time harried families have to buy gifts, plan seasonal events and make travel arrangements. Unfortunately, when time is at a premium and you’re forced to make last-minute decisions, it’s usually your budget that suffers. As an occasional procrastinator myself, let me share a few tips I’ve picked up over the years that can help take the expense – and stress – out of holiday planning: Before you start shopping, calculate how much you can afford to spend on the holidays as a portion of Page 6
your overall budget. If your finances are in good shape, spend no more than 1.5 percent of your annual income. But if you’re deeply in debt, can’t meet your regular monthly expenses or don’t have an emergency fund, this isn’t the time to rack up additional debt. Once you determine an overall amount, tally up expected holidayrelated expenses including gifts, decorations, new clothes and accessories, giftwrap, cards, postage, special meals and year-end gratuities. Don’t forget travel-related expenses if you plan to leave town, and try to recall unanticipated expenses from last year. If you’re looking for ways to cut back, consider: Arrange gift lotteries with family members and friends so everyone concentrates their time, effort and money on buying fewer, nicer gifts. Speak candidly with friends, coworkers and extended family about placing a moratorium on exchanging gifts. They’re probably feeling the pinch too. If the gift-giving gesture is important to you, suggest pooling resources with others to make a sizeable contribution to a charity you

all believe in. Once you’ve determined your overall holiday spending budget – and before you start shopping – make a detailed list that includes: Everyone on your shopping list. Spending limits and several gift alternatives for each person. How much you actually spend on each gift. If you overspend on one present you’ll need to make up for it elsewhere. What you gave each person – to avoid giving them the same thing next year. What each person gave you to avoid “re-gifting” disasters later on. Other expenses (decorations, etc.) Some people relish hunting for bargains; others loathe it. Either way, here are a few money-saving tips: Clip newspaper and online coupons. Stores often match competitors’ prices even if their own items aren’t on sale. Plus, many consolidation websites post downloadable coupons and sale codes for online retailers. Mobile shopping apps let instore smartphone and tablet users scan product barcodes and make on-the-spot price comparisons, read
reviews, download coupons, buy products and more. If you’re traveling for the holidays, note that many airlines charge $25 or more for each checked bag. Many stores and websites ship gifts for free, saving you hassle at the airport. Carefully read purchase-return policies for deadlines, exclusions (e.g., for sale or clearance items) and restocking charges. Keep receipts. Many retailers will refund the price difference if an item goes on sale within a few weeks after purchase. Check whether your credit card agreement provides free product warranty extensions and/or price protection. And finally, consider the gift of time. Older relatives don’t need more chocolates, but they probably could use help with chores, running errands or rides to doctor’s appointments. Plus, they would probably appreciate your company. Offer to babysit for harried parents so they can run a few errands or simply recharge their batteries.

Miracles “Le Cirque” Raises nearly $750k Kids With Life-Threatening Illnesses Miracles for Kids, a non-profit organization based in Tustin, CA, raised nearly $750,000 at their 8th annual gala; its most successful gala to date. Proceeds from the event fund the organization’s programs that provide aid to hundreds of low-income families with critically ill children throughout Southern California. Miracles for Kids currently operates at CHOC Children’s and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, as well as supports cutting-edge research through the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. Almost 600 of Southern California’s most notable people attended the popular annual Night of Miracles, emceed by ESPN SportsCenter Anchor Neil Everett. Themed this year as “Miracles Le Cirque”, the gala celebrated the imaginary world of Le Cirque – bubbling with its key elements of art, dance, dexterity, daring and grace. Incredible performances by Il Circo, the critically acclaimed troupe of gravity defying acrobats, entertained guests in addition to a lively silent and live auction. Guests also enjoyed an exclusive taste of various specially prepared Nolet’s Silver Dry Gin cocktails, donated by Miracles for Kids event sponsor and longtime supporter Carl Nolet and Nolet Spirits USA. “Miracles Le Cirque has been another great success for Miracles for Kids, which has been a critically needed support system for more than 600 families over the past eight years,” said Miracles for Kids board chairman, Kenneth Gerdau. “It’s truly overwhelming to see such an outpouring of generosity from the community for so many families in crisis who have children with lifethreatening illnesses.” The most impactful moment of the evening came when the room stood in ovation following a profile video on 4-year-old cancer patient and Miracles for Kids’ grant recipient, Anaya, and her mother, Amanda, who were in the room. The Fund-a-Family fundraiser directly followed, led by auctioneer Jim Nye and assisted by Miracles for Kids children and families, where more than $270,000 was raised from 176 bidders. One hundred percent of the funds were donated to the organization’s Grant Program, which funds basic living expenses for families in need. Always an enthusiastic auctioneer, Jim Nye led a live auction that showcased luxury getaway offerings, unforgettable experience packages and stunning couture fashions, such as a six-night stay for two at the Four Seasons Resort Maldives, a VIP French Open experience, a day with boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard, a custom clothing package with diamond cufflinks, and a pure bred, Yellow Labrador Retriever puppy with lifetime obedience classes. This year, Miracles for Kids offered electronic bidding technology through Bid Pal for the silent auction making the event almost entirely electronic. Guests bid on items ranging from luxury hotel packages to unique cases of wine. There was also an Opportunity Drawing for the “Circles” Bracelet donated by famed jewelry designer Martin Katz valued at $27,500. Miracles for Kids supporter Sugar Ray Leonard attended and took the stage during the Live Auction, auctioning a full day at his private home, raising the charity $14,000. During the Fund-a-Family portion earlier in the evening, his wife Bernadette gave an impromptu speech celebrating the charity’s cause and its impact on her personally, and donated an additional $10,000 to Fund-a-Family. Another memorable moment of the evening was when Javier Sosa Jr., the son of Javier Sosa, Sr. and founder of Javier’s Cantina & Grill, accepted the Miracle Maker award for his family’s decade long personal and professional support of the organization and the families it serves. “We can’t thank our generous sponsors enough for making this event such a remarkable success,” said Miracles for Kids president and event chair, Autumn Strier. “With more than 50 event sponsors donating over $250,000, it shows how much and how many individuals and businesses in Southern Page 12

If you are, than you have come to the right place! The dolls in this Baby Dolls holiday shopping guide vary from the amazing electronic versions to the basic baby doll and everything in-between. There are also a couple of baby doll accessories included as well. If you have anything baby related on your Christmas shopping list in 2012, make sure you get these hot baby doll items before they become scarce.
Baby Alive Baby All Gone by Hasbro- $25.00 3 years & up I have one daughter who is not really a fan of electronic baby dolls and one that loves them. The Baby Alive Baby All Gone doll has a few electronic actions that satisfies both my kids and I like it as well. My biggest complaint about the Baby Alive brand of dolls was that so many of them had to have food mix, drink mix, or diapers. The Baby Alive Baby All Gone allows kids to have the fun of “feeding” their baby and giving them something to drink without parents having to constantly purchase the mixes and diapers. When you push the spoon in the bowl, it activates a lever that slides a “spoonful” of bananas into view. Touching it to the lip of the baby doll makes it slide back into the spoon as if she took the bite. I do wish this action was a little quieter and smoother so it was not quite as noticeable. It also comes with a disappearing liquid sippy cup that refills when turned right side up. It seems when I am shopping for dolls that you have to pay a lot for any dolls that come with accessories outside of a baby bottle or small toy. If they do come with any accessories, they seem to be poorly

Hasbro Baby Alive Wanna Walk $ 55.00 3 years & up The Baby Alive Wanna Walk is a perfect Christmas gift for those kids that love electronic dolls. The Wanna Walk doll is ready to learn to walk and the child on your list has to help her learn. The doll says over 30 phrases that vary from asking for help up, telling you she wants to walk, or just laughing. The child can hold onto both hands and the doll will start to sway back and forth and actually walk forward. The doll can tell the difference between when your child is helping and when she is walking on her own. The doll will occasionally fall down and then ask for you to help her up. The only negative that I could say about this doll is that her design does limit the play to walking. She can not bend her legs to sit down very well and the phrases she says also limit game play. Again, that is something that could be a negative or a positive depending on the child.

The doll comes with a sippy cup, one diaper, a little book, a tiara, and two outfits. This doll does wet in her diaper from the water that you give her through the sippy cup. The book is princess themed, the dresses are princess-type dresses, and the tiara finishes off the princess theme for the doll. The Baby Alive doll does require diapers to play and you will most likely have to purchase the additional pack of diapers sold separately. I recommend letting the diapers air dry so you can re-use them to cut down on the cost of the diapers. You can get quite a few uses out of them before the tape does not work anymore. I like the fact that the doll has the princess items that will appeal even more to those that love princesses. This doll can be a great addition to those girls that are playing queen and they can have their princess baby girl.
