Handmade for the Holidays A holiday-ready home is filled with small touches that celebrate the season. Welcome guests with these easy DIY projects that lend an extra special feel to your home. Extend a warm greeting with a faux fur wreath that dresses up the front door, such as this design from the crafting experts at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores. Then, put some empty Mason jars to use with a display perfect for an entryway table or ledge. Make it even prettier by nestling the jars among some evergreen branches and finish them off with a pretty bow or twine. Find more ideas for DIY projects to spruce up your home this holiday season at joann.com.
Pompom Fur Wreath Crafting time: Weekend project Skill level: Some experience necessary Supplies and Tools: Pompom makers: 2 1/2-inch, 3 3/8inch, 4 1/2-inch Bernat Softee Chunky Yarn: Grey Heather, Taupe Grey, Natural (2 skeins each) Scissors Hard foam tubular 12-inch wreath Bernat Faux Fur Pompoms: Grey Lynx, White Rabbit (2 each) Hot gun and glue sticks T-pins or 2-inch pins with pearl heads Decorative ribbon: 2 1/2-inch-by12-foot, blue-grey 1. Follow directions on pompom maker packages to create three different sizes of poms of various colors using chunky yarn. If desired, mix yarn to give some pompoms a speckled look. Make about 50-60, depending on the fullness of the desired look. 2. After making pompoms, place pompoms around wreath, varying sizes and incorporating fur pompoms, as well. The overall look should be a kind of hilly terrain look to give it
depth. 3. Once desired placement has been achieved, glue them in place with hot glue. If needed, secure poms with T-pins or pearlhead pins. 4. Using blue/grey decorative ribbon, create a bow with trailing ends and glue in place with hot glue. Rose Gold Holiday Mason Jars Crafting time: 1-2 hours Skill level: No experience necessary Supplies and Tools: Smooth Mason jars Jelly jars Rose gold spray paint Provided templates: Deer head, tree, snowflake Scissors Pencil Sharpie Detail paintbrush White enamel paint Gold acrylic paint Medium flat paintbrush Scrap strips of fabric Baker’s twine 1. Lightly spray inside or outside of smooth Mason jars and jelly jars with rose gold spray paint. Allow each coat to dry completely. 2. Locate templates at joann. com by searching for the project title;
print templates and trim shapes. If the outside of the jar was spray painted, trace the shape with a pencil. If the inside of the jar was spray painted, trace the shape on the glass with a Sharpie. 3. Fill in each design using a detail brush and white enamel paint. Apply additional coats as necessary. 4. Paint jar rims gold. 5. Apply a thin layer or dry brush gold acrylic paint on jelly jars for added texture and dimension. 6. Embellish jars by making bows and knots with scrap strips of fabric or baker’s twine around rims of jars. Fill with sprigs of dried flowers or branches or other seasonal decorations, or for jars painted on the outside, fill with candies or treats for an edible gift.

If the approaching holidays have you seeing dollar signs and cringing to avoid the stress the season brings, you may be relieved to know there is one simple step to help bypass many of the common holiday headaches. Traveling by vehicle costs less, is more convenient and is not as stressful as flying, according to the Car Care Council. “With gas prices below $3 per gallon in many parts of the country, more and more travelers are realizing the economic and hassle-free benefits of driving to their holiday destination,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “A family of four can travel 1,000 miles round-trip by car for about the cost of a single airline ticket, so driving is the sensible option.” In addition to direct cost savings, travel by car offers a number of practical advantages over flying including: • Flexible agenda. Without the demands of a flight schedule dictating your timeline, you have the ability to
leave when you want. And on the open road, there is no captain asking you to remain seated, so when the need arises, you can simply stop and stretch without worry. Calling your own shots by car, you also won’t risk being hampered by airline weather delays. • Skip the wait. Choose to travel by car and you can forget about waiting in long ticket counter and security lines. An added bonus, you’ll avoid driving in circles looking for an open parking space in the overflow lot miles from your terminal. • No luggage fees. Dodge those hefty charges and load your car up with as much luggage as you want – including wrapped gifts that don’t always make it through security intact. • Ride in comfort. While air travel may be expedient, it often comes at the cost of legroom and overall comfort. Traveling by car also lets you forgo the company of strangers. • Familiar wheels. If deplaning and collecting your baggage isn’t
enough, getting behind the wheel of an unfamiliar rental car or cramming your belongings into an overpriced taxi may be the final straw for your sanity. Traveling in your own car ensures you know how to operate all the features for a safe and comfortable ride. • Pet-friendly perks. Although some airlines allow pets to fly, the cost and logistics can be burdensome. Simply loading up your pet and their supplies in your vehicle is more convenient for you, and less likely to stress your four-legged friend. • An expanded menu. Your hunger is in your own hands when you travel by car. Whether you’re grabbing a quick re-fueling snack on the go or sampling the local fare, traveling by car gives you more and better meal options. Before you set out, be sure your car is in tip-top shape for a safe holiday travel. Request a free copy of the Car Care Council’s Car Care Guide at www.carcare.org for tips on regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair.

Think outside the chocolate box when hosting a holiday cookie exchange The holidays provide a good excuse to bake and eat cookies. Not the traditional chocolate chip or peanut butter cookies that most of us eat during the rest of the year, but those special recipes that have everyone going back for a second taste. Hosting a cookie exchange is a great way to expose your friends to a wider variety of cookie recipes this holiday season. But before sending out invitations and asking your friends to make their favorite cookie recipe, consider thinking outside the chocolate box for your party this year. There are tons of ways to make your cookie exchange party unique. Start planning your party right away using a couple of these ideas. * Make it a themed cookie exchange. Theme parties are fun at any time of year, but take it one step further with your cookie exchange. Invite your guests to follow the theme with the recipes they choose to make. For example, consider hosting a black and white cookie party, explaining to attendees that the cookies must have a black or white element. Coconut, white or dark chocolate candies, nuts and sugar for icing are just several ingredients that fit the bill, and you can find dozens of recipes featuring these items. Or make it a chocolate party, where all of the recipes have a
chocolate ingredient in them. Many cookie recipes include nuts, so a nut theme would also be a great idea. In addition to the recipes featuring the theme, also decorate the party room to match. In need of a recipe? The following white chocolate crunch recipe is great for all three themed parties: Hawaiian Host Whole Macadamia White Chocolate Crunch Ingredients: 1 box, 7 ounces, 18 pieces Hawaiian Host Whole Macadamia White Chocolates 1 cup Rice Krispies 1 cup mini marshmallows 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter Directions: Melt chocolate in a microwave oven in 4 quart casserole at 70 percent power for 3 - 4 minutes, stirring periodically, until melted. Stir in peanut butter. Add corn cereal and marshmallows; stir. Pour into buttered 8-by-8 inch square pan or dish. When firm, cut into squares. * Up the game on the party favors. The purpose of a cookie exchange is to leave the party with a variety of holiday cookies, but you and your guests can have a lot more fun. Ways to think outside the chocolate box include holding a wine pairing with the cookies. Red wine and chocolate go well together, and your guests can
determine which pairing works best for their holiday tables. Or indulge by serving some chocolate martinis alongside the cookies. If your group is into games, make up fun names for the cookie recipes everyone brought, or make a unique recipe just for the party, and have guests guess the ingredients in the mystery cookie. * Introduce unexpected ingredients into the cookie recipes. One of the holiday season’s most popular confections is Hawaiian Host chocolate-covered macadamia nuts that tempt frequent snacking all season long. But chopping up these chocolate-covered nuts and putting them into a cookie recipe will introduce a new surprise to all your guests. Try them in the following butter cookie recipe: Hawaiian Host Milk Chocolate AlohaMac Butter Cookies Ingredients: 14 pieces Hawaiian Host Milk Chocolate AlohaMacs, chop into pieces 1/2 cup butter, unsalted 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup light brown sugar, granulated 1 large egg 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 1/4 cup flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Directions: Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix butter and sugars in large bowl until light and fluffy. Add egg and beat, then add vanilla extract. Mix flour, salt and soda, and add gradually to butter mixture. Fold in chocolate pieces. Drop rounded spoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets. Bake 8 - 10 minutes in the preheated oven, until light brown. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes. Then place on a wire rack to cool completely. Hosting a cookie exchange is a lot of fun, and when you think outside the chocolate box, you can take the fun to a whole new level. So start planning your party, find some unique cookie recipes and get started with your holiday baking. For more recipes or to order chocolate-covered macadamia nuts online visit www.hawaiianhost. com. “Like” us on Facebook at www. facebook.com/HawaiianHostInc.
Fantastic fashion ideas for him and her this season By: Sheila Warden Whether you are shopping for yourself, updating a loved one’s look, or wondering what to wear to a holiday party in chilly temperatures, there are key items to look for when shopping this season that are sure to have you fashionably warm. Fashion ideas for women Bring in those dresses that have the lighter colors like pale pinks and light greens from the summer, and then layer with your darker winter pieces. Sweaters and tweed jackets are hot right now and transition well from fall through winter, and are even wearable in the spring. Tops and bottoms in the same print are en trend, and easy to wear, especially when hosting. If you don’t have time to over think what to wear. Too busy making sure everything else is right, and just want to put on something you know is fashionable and will work. There are also all kinds of jackets this season. Go for leather jackets, jackets with prints and your solid colored jackets. Just remember that if you pick a jacket with a louder print, you’ll want to pick something not-soexciting underneath. Lastly for the shoe fanatics, don’t overlook one of the biggest hits this Page 6
season: the open toed bootie. They come in every color, fabric and style, and can be found in just about any shoe store. Boots in general are a win-win. Anything from ankle to thigh high in leather and snake skin with red and black leading will be a hit. If you want a break from boots, ballerina slippers can also carry you through the seasons. Coats will be your pricier purchase, but it is your best buy of the season. When it comes to coats and outer wear, take on texture, shearling and fur mixed with leather and in color too. Don’t be afraid to make your coat your fashion statement. Accessories are a must for winter wear, and they also make great gifts as you can avoid guessing sizes. Neck candy or big pieces of costume jewelry will be great this winter. You can use them with a jeans and t-shirts look or with a cocktail dress. Shopping bag and the shopping basket handbag looks are staples this winter season. And don’t forget about the back pack along with the hand painted bags and the jeweled clutch. Fashion ideas for guys Sweaters and cardigans are coming back for men of all ages. Charcoal colors, dusty grays and
The San Clemente News
blacks are sure-win colors for any man’s closet. En trend for men are dye sublimation socks with printed styles. Young men are collecting socks this winter and these printed socks will be a great addition to their select stash of trendy pieces. When considering tops this winter, consider stripes instead of plaids but go for winter colors like burgundy. Stick to wools for jacket pieces, cottons in shirts and tops, knits or double knits for sweaters and cardigans, fun jackets made of leather or faux fur and suede for the more laid back and a clean- cut gentleman.
Crushed velvet is great for a dress jacket or vest and it’s perfect for the holidays. Boots and oxfords are the primary fall and winter shoe wear across the country. Don’t be afraid to mix and match your oxfords with a more casual look and your boots with a more sophisticated look, but consider where you’re going and what you’ll be doing. Scully hats and the beanie are coming back for men as well. Male handbags are also a trend that can serve a utilitarian purpose carrying items such as a laptop, wallet, pen and iphone.

Tips for finding the perfect guy gift this holiday season Guys can be the hardest people to shop for, and finding the perfect gift has become a daunting holiday tradition. Sure, they will appreciate the thought behind another bundle of tube socks - and might even wear them - but there are gifts that bring a wow factor and make even the most stoic guys light up like a little kid. Add to a collection Adding to a guy’s collection is a great gift idea. If you’re unsure about what to choose, ask him what he collects and what he needs to take it to the next level. He will be flattered you’re showing interest and you’ll gain valuable insight into that perfect gift. Give tools for do-it-yourself projects You may not know every project the DIYer in your life is working on, so choose a multi-purpose tool. Tools like the Klutch Cordless Impact Wrench from Northern Tool + Equipment are the perfect partner for all those auto, construction or equipment maintenance projects. This 24-volt, cordless wrench delivers heavy torque and includes four different sockets assuring he has the right piece for any job. Fill his garage or man cave
Every guy has a little space in the home he likes to call his own. For some it’s the garage, for others it’s the man cave in the house, and for others maybe the garage is his man cave. Wherever he chooses to relax, he might enjoy a personalized beer pitcher or an under-the-counter
fridge. His garage will also look great with a new toolbox or shop stool. Find the unexpected Finding a gift he might get from a buddy will be a pleasant surprise for him. The Harley-Davidson 7-Liter Pilsner Glass from Kotula’s will turn heads and create a lot of laughs. This
giant beer glass can hold up to about 18 cans of his favorite beer and will make a big statement. If you use these shopping tips for the guys in your life, you won’t even need to check your holiday list twice. With a good plan in mind, you’ll find options he will enjoy and actually use.

4 Holiday Decorating Trends to Try This Season With the holidays upon us, homeowners and renters are gearing up to deck the halls in celebration of the season. Just as the year-round decor in your space reflects your personality and unique style, your approach to holiday decorating shouldn’t be any different. Whether your design style is cheery and colorful, natural and rustic or glitzy and glamorous, there are many ways to replace traditional holiday decor and make the space feel more like you. “Bringing your personal style to life doesn’t require an interior designer, and is something you can easily tackle on your own,” said Carrie and Morgan of Ampersand Design Studio. “With a little inspiration and help from damage-free Command Clear Hooks that blend seamlessly into surfaces, you can take your holiday decorating to the next level with ease.” Carrie and Morgan suggest these design trends to help infuse personality and go all out on holiday decorating this year: Gilded Modern – This bold and graphic style combines black, gold and brass tones for a sleek, polished look. Upgrade your mantel by hanging a chic and modern wreath as the focal point and surround it with gallery-style framed quotes and simple paintings over gold garland. The high-contrast
patterns and simple color palette transcend holiday and can even be left up through New Year’s Eve. Merry and Bright – Capture the fun of being a kid with a look that contrasts natural tones and plywood against glossy, neon colors. Turn a bare wall into a life-size Christmas countdown made from brown paper bags and boxes color-blocked with paint and hung in a tree shape. The result is a punchy and playful display whose colors glow as bright as traditional tree lights. Sugar Plum – Go for girly by mixing vibrant pinks and teals with metallic colors and glitter that instantly make any decoration stand out. String together bulb ornaments to dress up a bar cart and set the scene with a complementary backdrop on the wall. The playful and casual set-up conveys a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Camp Christmas – Embrace the outdoors and the cozy feelings that come with the holiday season by fusing traditional colors with warm patterns. Dress outdoor wreaths and furniture with flannel or buffalocheck patterned fabric reminiscent of winter. Guests from near and far will feel welcome and at home for the holidays. For more holiday decorating tips, visit Command.com.

Decorating Room by Room LIVING ROOM: Add a touch of frost to your room with inspiration from a wintery wonderland. Shining, snowy accents, along with plush pillows and a faux fur throw, create a warm, inviting space.
A
FAMILY FEATURES
mong the most treasured of holiday delights is, as the carol says, decking the halls. It’s the perfect excuse to pull out the bling and bring an aura of festivity and fun to your home, whether it’s for your personal enjoyment or setting the stage to celebrate the season with loved ones. All you need is a little imagination and some design inspiration to create an inviting holiday home, both indoors and out. Shopping at stores recognized for a wide assortment of quality furnishings, such as Pier 1 Imports, will give you a variety of decor that fits every style at an excellent value. Trim your tree beautifully and learn how to artfully incorporate wreaths and garland into your holiday home decor with Pier 1 Imports’ additional tips for a Christmas as merry and bright as you make it.
A tree worth gathering ’round
As the focal point of your holiday trimmings, your Christmas tree should reflect your personal style and make a statement about your holiday spirit. Start by choosing the right theme or look for your tree, from traditional to glamorous to fantastical. Ultimately, you can carry this theme throughout every element of the tree, from the ornaments to the gift wrap to other accents sprinkled throughout. To get started, select a pre-lit tree in the shape and style that best matches your vision: noble fir or pine, in slim or full silhouettes, the options go on. Be sure to spend some time fluffing branches for a more natural look, or choose one of Pier 1 Imports’ new memory trees with self-shaping branches that let you start decorating right away with the fastest setup ever. Begin decorating by placing large elements. Weave garland through the tree branches first. Then start tucking larger ornaments and decor into the branches, placing evenly throughout. Fill in open spaces in the branches with smaller ornaments and floral picks. Keep adding until the branches are filled. Crown your tree with a decorative topper that fits your theme to add height and an extra personal touch. Adorn the base of the tree with a coordinating tree skirt or collar, and remember, you’re not quite finished until the presents are under the tree. Bundle your gifts with high-quality wrapping paper, gift bags, tags and bows that also fit your theme for a cohesive, finished look from top to bottom.
MANTEL: Who says a fire always melts snow? While your hearth heats your home, keep your holiday accents crisp and cool, with plenty of snowflakes, trees and wreaths to go around. STAIRCASE: Think beyond the tree and loop garland and festive lighting, such as Glimmer Strings from Pier 1 Imports, around your banister. DINING ROOM: Craft your own centerpieces with a few essential ingredients. A pretty mixture of evergreens, woodland creatures and metallic pillar stands shines in the soft glow of candlelight. BEDROOM: Create a welcome retreat within your bedroom with an elegant headboard, bright bedding and seasonal accents – everything you need to settle down for a long winter’s nap. OUTDOORS: Take your holiday party out to the patio. Lanterns filled with LED candles, soft pillows and garden stools offer all the festive features of indoor decor but with the durability for outdoors.
You can even use a shimmering Christmas tree garland as a table runner for a simple but elegant touch of joy. Add a natural touch with a garland crafted of pinecones, or go for glamour with golden accents. Find more ideas and garland to fit your personal style at pier1.com. Make your holiday merry and bright with a hint of starlight and sparkle. As you explore decorating ideas, remember to add a lighter touch with hanging ornaments, embroidered accents and candleholders. After all, Christmas is the perfect time to let your inner light shine.
Creative uses for traditional trimmings
Don’t let your vision for a festive holiday home stop at the front door. Wreaths and garlands can actually bring a stylish touch to your holiday decor from the outside in. You can create a wintery landscape in your home by decking your halls, tables and more with inspired Christmas wreath placements. One idea is to nestle a hurricane in a berry wreath for a burst of color and texture; the candlelight will lend an air of cozy comfort. Home is where the hearth is, and a well-adorned mantel is a must. Make a stunning wreath the star of your fireplace display, and incorporate a supporting cast of berry garland and even a woodland creature or two to help make your look complete. Actually, repurposing garland in different locations throughout your house is another inventive way to infuse Christmas spirit. From staircases to bookshelves to headboards, cleverly installed garland sends a message that you have a passion for the season.

Small Plates for a Big Party This holiday season don’t let a main dish hog all the glory. Instead let guests feast on a festive spread of small plates and sides. Snack-size portions of a wide range of delicious dishes are the perfect solution for entertaining. A large, heavy meal can leave guests feeling lethargic. Keep your party lively with lighter bites that guests can nibble on throughout the night. Another advantage of a small plate menu is that guests will appreciate the chance to sample many flavors without fear of overindulging. Get your party planning started with these tips: • Keep dishes simple and put the focus on quality ingredients, such as naturally lactose and gluten free Jarlsberg cheese. Best known for the classic wedge available in original and smoked flavors, Jarlsberg cheese offers a mild, mellow, nutty and delicious taste that is perfect for any cheese board and pairing with meats of your choice. • Give traditional vegetable sides a special boost to make them party perfect. Basic asparagus gets a fresh twist with this Asparagus Tart, which blends savory Jarlsberg brand cheese and a pastry for a pretty presentation you can cut into squares before serving. • Plan your menu with the clock in mind. Choose foods that will taste great for the duration of your party without drying out or loosing flavor, such as this Tomato Gratin. • Keep cold dishes chilled by setting the serving bowl inside a larger bowl filled with ice (add some flair by tinting the ice or adding decorative accents). • Use burners to keep the heat on warm dishes, or simply rotate in fresh batches periodically. Give your holiday entertaining an extra boost this year with Jarlsberg Cheese’s Great Holiday Giveaway, which runs through Dec. 31 and offers prizes for holiday entertaining, including a DSLR camera as the

grand prize and weekly charcuterie party kits. Learn more and enter (once per day) at Facebook.com/ Jarlsbergusa, and find more holiday entertaining recipes at jarlsberg.com. Asparagus Tart 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed 2 cups Jarlsberg cheese, shredded 1 pound asparagus 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves salt and pepper Heat oven to 400 F. Prepare baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll out puff pastry into 16-by10-inch rectangle, trimming uneven edges. Place on baking sheet. With knife, lightly score pastry dough 1 inch from edges to mark rectangle. Using fork, pierce dough inside markings at 1/2-inch intervals. Bake until golden, about 15 minutes. Remove pastry shell from oven and sprinkle with shredded cheese. Trim asparagus spears to fit crosswise inside pastry shell. Arrange in single layer over cheese, alternating ends and tips. Brush with oil, sprinkle thyme leaves and season with salt and pepper. Bake until spears are tender, about 20 minutes. Tomato Gratin 8 medium ripe tomatoes 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 4 garlic cloves, sliced 4 sprigs fresh thyme (or 4 basil leaves, chopped) salt and pepper, to taste 2 ounces toasted pine (pignoli) nuts 1/2 pound (8 ounces) grated Jarlsberg cheese Heat oven to 350 F. Cut tomatoes in half. In bowl, whisk together vinegar, olive oil, garlic, thyme, salt and pepper; gently mix in tomatoes. Transfer to ovenproof dish, turning tomatoes cut side up before baking 15 minutes.

When tomatoes are cool enough, remove skins before returning to baking dish. Sprinkle tomatoes with nuts and cheese. Return to oven and bake about 10 minutes, or until cheese turns golden and bubbly. Serve as bruschetta on sliced, toasted Italian bread or as a side dish to fish and meat.
Cheesy Mashed Potatoes 4 large baking potatoes, peeled and cut 1 cup Jarlsberg cheese 1 cup milk 1 container sour cream 1/2 cup butter 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
Heat oven to 350 F. Place potatoes in large pot of salted water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer until tender. Drain and bring potatoes to food processor. In food processor, add cheese, milk, sour cream, butter, salt and pepper. Process all ingredients with potatoes until smooth. Pour mixture into baking pan and cover with tin foil. Bake 30 minutes. Uncover potatoes during last 10 minutes to allow browning. Sensational Platters Platters featuring savory finger foods are a flavorful and easy solution for holiday entertaining. Simply assemble ingredients, such as those listed below, on a large wooden or slate board and serve. Get creative by adding fig spreads, fresh fruit or other nibbles you enjoy, and don’t forget the toothpicks and napkins. Be sure to take the cheese out of the refrigerator at least an hour before serving to ensure that it is room temperature to bring out the ideal flavor. Never serve cheese cold. • Wedge or cubed Jarlsberg cheese • Assortment of whole grain crackers and crusty bread slices • Italian Genoa salami, coppa or your favorite charcuterie meats • Assorted olives, nuts and dried or fresh fruits

San Clemente gets ready for El Niño storms 1. CREATE AN EMERGENCY FAMILY PLAN 2. EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN (RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL) 3. PREPARE A DISASTER SUPPLY KIT 4. SANDBAG CONSTRUCTION 5. SANDBAG SUPPLIERS 6. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FEDERAL DISASTER ASSISTANCE AND FEDERAL FLOOD INSURANCE 7. IF AN EVACUATION IS ADVISED Discuss what to do about power outages and personal injuries. Draw a floor plan of your home, and mark an escape route from each room. Locate the main electric fuse box, water service main, and natural gas main. Learn how and when to turn these utilities off. Teach all responsible family members. Keep necessary tools near gas and water shut-off valves. Remember, turn off the utilities only if you suspect the lines are damaged or if you are instructed to do so. If you turn the gas off, you will need a professional to turn it back on. Pick one out-of-state and one local friend or reative for family members to call if separated by disaster (it is often easier to call out-of-state than within the affected area). • Post emergency telephone numbers near telephones. • Teach children how and when to call 911, police and fire. • Teach children how to make long distance telephone calls. • Instruct household members to turn on the radio for emergency information. Pick two meeting places: • A place near your home in case of a fire. • A place in your neighborhood in case you cannot return home, • Learn the safest route from your home or job to high, safe ground in case you have to evacuate in a hurry, and be sure to keep your gas tank full!! • Take a basic first aid and CPR class. • Make at itemize list of personal property, including furnishings, clothing and valuables; photograph your home inside and out, which will help settle insurance claims. Keep photos in a safe deposit box. FOR MORE INFORMATION The federal Emergency Management Agency offers free publications on protecting your home and assembling and emergency kit, 1-800-638-6620. El Niño information is available on the agency’s web site: http://www.fema.gov RESIDENTIAL Losses due to flooding can often be cut dramatically by carrying out an effective pre- planned set of actions. The emergency plan may consist primarily of a checklist of things to be done and a little pre-thinki ng about where contents will be moved, who’s going to help, where things will be stored and so on. Among others, items on the emergency “to do “ list might include: • Moving items to be left in the structure to an upper floor or stacked
on top of each other to put at least some furniture above flood level. • Throwing curtains and drapes up over rods. • Pulling up and removing carpets and rugs. • Motors to be removed from furnace and other equipment located in the low levels of the house. • Unplug equipment that can’t be moved. • Assemble medicine, heirlooms, valuables and other items to be for taking during evacuation. COMMERCIAL Commercial and industrial sites offer the opportunity and need for more detailed planning and sometimes new construction or other preparations to facilitate putting the plan into action when necessary. This may include such things as: • Preparing electrical equipment for quick disconnect. • Preparing equipment for quick evacuation. • Keeping raw materials and products on pallets for quick removal. • Providing means for opening all necessary doors manually in the event of a power outage. Arranging for transportation when needed. • Arranging for storage space when needed. • Keeping on hand all items needed for rapid cleanup and restoration of production. EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN PREPARE A DISASTER SUPPLY KIT • List of important phone numbers (family, physicians, etc.) • Copy of insurance policy. • Credit cards and cash. • An extra set of car keys. • Inexpensive rabbit-ears television antennas to use when cable goes out. • Special items for infants, elderly or disabled family members. • Extra batteries. • Matches. • Clock (wind-up or batteryoperated). • Blankets or sleeping bags. • Scissors. • Plastic garbage bags. • Map of the area. • Clean change of clothes & rain gear. • A supply of non-perishable packaged or canned food and a non-electric can opener. • A first aid kit and prescription medications. • Flashlights and extra bulbs. • Battery-operated lanterns. (Candles and kerosene lanterns are fire hazards.) • Working fire extinguishers . • Battery-operated radio. • Assemble supplies you might need in an evacuation. Store them in an easy-to-carry container such as a backpack or duffel bag. Put aside in a special box in garage. Keep heat-sensitive items inside home and rotate stock throughout season. Batteries can go in refrigerator. WATER Having an ample supply of clean water is a top priority in an emergency. A normally active person needs to drink at least two quarts of water each day, hot environments can
double that amount. Children, nursing mothers and ill people will need even more. You will also need water for food preparation and hygiene. Store a total of at least one-gallon per person, per day. You should store at least a two-week supply of water for each member of our family. If supplies run low, never ration water. Drink the amount you need today, and try to find more for tomorrow. You can minimize the amount of water your body needs by reducing activity and staying cool. Store water in sealed, unbreakable containers. Identify the storage date and replace every six months Sandbags The use of sandbags is a simple, but effective, way to prevent or reduce floodwater damage. Properly filled and placed, sandbags can act as a barrier to divert moving water around instead of through buildings. Sandbag construction does not guarantee a watertight seal, but is satisfactory for use in most situations. Sandbags are also used successfully to prevent overtopping of levied streams and for training current flow to specific areas. Untied sandbags are recommended for most situations. Tied sandbags should only be used for special situations when pre-filling and stockpiling may be required for specific purposes such as filling holes, holding objects in position or to form barriers backedby supportive planks. Tied sandbags are generally easier to handle and to stockpile, however sandbag filling operations can generally best be accomplished at or near the placement site and tying of bags would waste valuable time and effort. If the bags are pre-filled at a distant location, due consideration must be given to transportation vehicles and placement site access. The most commonly use bags are untreated burlap sacks available from feed or hardware stores. Empty bags can be stockpiled for emergency use and will be serviceable for several years if properly stored. Filled bags of earth material will deteriorate quickly. A heavy bodied or sandy soil is most desirable for filling sandbags, but any usable material at or near the site has definite advantages. Course sand could leak out through the weave of the bag (to prevent this double bag the material). Gravely or rocky soils are generally poor
choices because of their permeability characteristics. Sandbag barriers can easily be constructed by two people, as most individuals have the physical capabilities to carry or drag a sandbag weighing approximately 30 pounds the use of sandbags is a simple, but effective, way to prevent or reduce floodwater damage. HOW TO FILL A SANDBAG Filling sandbags is a two-person operation: One member of the team should place the empty bag between or slightly in front of widespread feet with arms extended. The throat of the bag is folded to form a collar and held with the hands in a position that will enable the other team member to empty a rounded shovel full of material into the open end. The person holding the sack should be standing with knees slightly flexed and head and face as far away from the action of the shovel as practical. The shoveler should carefully release the rounded shovel full of soil into the throat of the bag. Haste in this operation can result in undue spillage and added work. The use of safety goggles and gloves is desirable and sometimes necessary. For large-scale operations, filling sandbags can be expedited by using bag holding racks, metal funnels, and power loading equipment. However, the special equipment required is not always available during an emergency. Bags should not be filled more than half full or less than onethird their capacity. PLACEMENT Remove any debris from the area where bags are to be placed. Place the l/2-filled bags lengthwise and parallel to the direction of flow. Fold the open end of the unfilled portion of the bag to form a triangle. (If bed bags are used, flatten or fire the tied end.) Place succeeding bags on the folded or fired portion of the previous bag and stamp into place to eliminate voids and form a tight seal.
