SHARK SIGHTINGS SERVE AS A REMINDER TO BE CAUTIOUS IN THE OCEAN With warm days ahead, more people will be heading to the beach to swim, boogie board or surf. Recent shark sightings this past weekend are a reminder that the ocean is a vast wilderness, home to marine animals, such as sharks, stingrays, dolphin, whales, jelly fish, seals and more that are swimming in the same ocean with us. While the majority of ocean animals are harmless to people, some can occasionally injure humans. In our area, stingrays probably injure more people than any other form of marine life, with their very painful sting. However, in terms of severity of potential injury, sharks are at the top of the marine food chain. “Although there has been a slight increase in the number of shark sightings in recent weeks, it is still statistically safe to swim in the ocean, although it is important to remember that there is always an element of danger. However, the number one danger in the ocean is drowning,” said Marine Safety Chief Bill Humphreys. “For example, in 2016 there were 53 unprovoked shark attacks in the United States and zero fatalities, according to the International Shark Attack File. Currently, over 3,500 people on average drown each year in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control. This isn’t meant to negate the danger of sharks, it’s simply to put it into perspective. Everyone needs to exercise caution to prevent drownings and reduce their risk of being injured by any marine animal.”

City lifeguards follow a county-wide protocol and will close the beaches if there is a danger to the public. It is the number one goal of the City to keep people safe at the beach, and we wish to remind residents and visitors to be mindful that the ocean is a vast marine habitat. It is also helpful when members of the public report shark sightings or any other threat to lifeguards at the Marine Safety Headquarters building just north of the Pier or to the Pier lifeguard tower which is manned seven days a week. Marine Safety can be reached at (949) 361-8219 and Sheriff’s Dispatch at (949) 770-6011 or 9-1-1 for emergencies. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), shark attacks are rare, though when they do happen, they are most likely to occur near shore,

typically inshore of a sandbar or between sandbars, where sharks can become trapped by low tide, and near steep drop offs where shark’s prey gather. The relative risk of a shark attack is very small, but should always be minimized whenever possible. To reduce your risk, NOAA has these tips: • Don’t swim too far from shore • Stay in groups – sharks are more likely to attack a solitary individual • Avoid being in the water during darkness or twilight when sharks are most active • Don’t go in the water if bleeding from a wound -- sharks have an acute sense of smell • Leave the shiny jewelry at home – the reflected light resembles fish scales

You are not here merely to make a living. You are here to enrich the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand. ~Woodrow Wilson

CAMINO DEL RIO INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS – CONSTRUCTION UPDATE The construction of the intersection improvements on Camino Del Rio are underway with a target completion date of early July 2017. To facilitate the completion of the roundabout central islands and medians at the intersections at Camino de Los Mares and Calle Sarmentoso, the contractor, All American Asphalt, will need to close the two intersections. The

two intersections will be closed at different time periods to minimize inconvenience for the local community during the detour periods. The intersections at Camino de Los Mares and Calle Sarmentoso will be closed at different time periods for approximately three weeks beginning on May 3, 2017 with a target detour and closure completion date of May 31, 2017. Access to homes in the

Del Rio Detour Sarmentoso

communities adjacent to Camino Del Rio will be accessible at all times. Following the construction of the roundabout central islands and center medians, periodic closures may also occur to facilitate the landscaping installation and paving operations. The City asks that the public plan alternative routes during this period and adhere to the detour routes. For more information on the forthcoming

detour routes, please visit the City website at www.san-clemente.org. The City greatly appreciates the public being patient and cooperative as it works to improve the community’s street network. For more information about the project, please contact Jennifer Rosales, Senior Transportation Engineer at (949) 361-6114.

JIM JOHNSON MEMORIAL SPORTS PARK GRAND OPENING Ribbon Cutting at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10th The City of San Clemente will unveil the much anticipated Jim Johnson Memorial Sports Park located at 450 West Avenida Vista Hermosa with a ribbon cutting on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. The park is named after Jim Johnson, a committed community member that invested in San Clemente’s youth, seniors, and schools. His community investments were primarily donated in private and without recognition. His preference was to enjoy watching the benefits of his support, outside public view. When Jim passed away in 2004 he was survived by his wife, two sons, and one daughter. It brings them great joy to know that the park named after their late husband and father, respectively, will be enjoyed by the whole San Clemente community. The park is located on the inland portion of Marblehead Coastal, off of the southbound I-5 Avenida Vista Hermosa exit, adjacent to Shorecliffs Middle School. Park amenities include a playground, a synthetic soccer field, two multipurpose fields, a basketball court, picnic tables, BBQ, and restrooms. The playground is considered a challenging play playground and includes features like a rope-based play structure and

ocean colors throughout. The playground theme is also reflected in the Custom Mural that is located on the new concession stand/ restroom structure. This mosaic tile mural was hand crafted for the park using children’s kaleidoscopes as inspiration to create a beautiful public art piece that is fun and timeless, and has Spanish Colonial and Moorish Tile flair. Unique to this park is a cutting edge synthetic soccer field displaying a large “SC” in the center circle. The highest quality materials were used to create this beautiful field. Organic sand and coconut fiber infill was installed and will help keep the field up to 40 degrees cooler than recycled rubber infill. The field offers comfort and savings compared to natural grass fields, saving hundreds of thousands of gallons of water in irrigation. It does not need to be mowed, and the material is sustainable. Professional sports level grade brock pad was installed underneath the carpet for added head attenuation protection for users when falling. For information on the new park amenities or for reservations, contact the City’s Recreation Division at (949) 361-8264, (949) 429-8797 or www. san-clemente.org/recreation.

Tips for hosting a better brunch

Burning, Tingling, Numbness or Pain? Don’t Suffer Any Longer!

Proven Medical Neuropathy Treatment with an 87% Success Rate Available in Newport Beach Do you suffer from: • Pins and needles in your feet, legs, hands or arms

Love the idea of hosting a brunch, but begin to regret it the moment you’re toiling over a pan of bacon grease while your friends are chatting over mimosas? You’re not alone. Whether you’re planning a simple brunch for a small group or an Easter brunch to wow a crowd, these simple tips and ideas are guaranteed to get you out of the kitchen and into the action. Prepare a game plan. Developing a checklist will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed with to-do’s. Once you know how many people will be attending the brunch, start planning the menu, gather recipes and make a grocery list. Take inventory of your cooking supplies, serving dishes and tableware. While cleaning the house, identify what decorations are needed. Picture the scene the night before. Figure out how to serve the food, decide where to put the drinks, gather extra seating and put all the plates, cups, cutlery and napkins on the table. Also, don’t forget the mugs or cocktail glasses if you plan to serve coffee or mimosas. While it might seem obvious, these little details can easily be overlooked. Lastminute jobs are bound to happen, so conquering the planned details ahead of time will help keep you sane. Create a menu full of make-ahead recipes. From drinks to dessert, make sure your menu allows you to spend more times with friends and family and less time in the kitchen. Sure, everyone loves a good omelet, but you’re not a short order cook. Instead, opt for low-maintenance recipes that can be prepared the night before and

popped in the oven the next morning. You can never go wrong with classic egg-based dishes such as quiche, strata and casserole. If your culinary skills aren’t up for the task of cooking for a crowd, don’t be afraid to choose store-bought or catered dishes. This will help alleviate any unnecessary stress and allow you to enjoy the event. Ditch the pile of dirty dishes in favor of disposable tableware. Instead of standing over the sink cleaning, spend the extra time relaxing with family and friends. Try a line of products that offer the total solution for your tableware needs, including a variety of plate and cup sizes and a serve and store container of cutlery. The Chinet Cut Crystal collection makes entertaining easy with tableware that complement one another and also earn compliments from guests. All the dishes can be tossed once people are done eating, keeping post-brunch cleanup to a minimum. Plus, all Chinet Cut Crystal products are recyclable - leaving you to only feel guilty about that second scone. Set the table in style. Make sure your brunch is as stylish as it is tasty. For a “hare-raising” reaction from your friends and family, fold Chinet Classic White napkins into the shape of bunnies and display in the center of each plate. A bunny napkin fold can also double as a place setting card. Simply write the name of the guest on one of the bunny ears. It’s a pretty and practical way to add personality to the table. - (BPT)

FAST, FLAVORFUL FISH DINNER

If warm spring weather has you in the mood for a simple fish dinner, look to your humble sheet pan. Follow these simple tips from Dr. Wendy Bazilian, McCormick Health Advisor and Registered Dietitian, to enjoy tasty seafood recipes you’ll want to make all year long. n Sheet pans are perfect for simple fish dinners because they require minimal cleanup and everything is baked on one pan. n While lemon is a great complement to seafood, think about pairing with other citrus flavors like orange and lime. Try marinating shrimp in a mixture of lite coconut milk, lime extract, ginger and red pepper. n Add colorful vegetables like zoodles or asparagus to your sheet pan to boost both seafood and vegetable servings. You don’t need a spiralizer to make zoodles because many grocery stores offer pre-made zoodles in the produce section. Explore more recipes to enjoy during spring and beyond at McCormick.com, or look for McCormick Spice on Facebook and Pinterest.

Strawberry and Cheese Refrigerator Pie

Reprinted with permission from the American Institute for Cancer Research Servings: 8 1 prepared whole-wheat graham cracker pie crust (9 inches) 4 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese 1/4 cup reduced-fat sour cream 2 tablespoons extra-fine sugar 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 pound strawberries 1/2 cup strawberry fruit spread 1 teaspoon lemon juice (optional)

Page 14

Heat oven to 350 F. Place crust on baking sheet and bake 8 minutes, or until golden and fragrant. Transfer to wire rack and cool completely. Place cream cheese, sour cream, sugar, lemon zest and vanilla in small bowl. Using hand mixer on medium speed or wooden spoon, blend until combined and smooth. Spread cheese mixture evenly over bottom of pie crust. Refrigerate until set, 1-2 hours. Before serving, cut off tops of strawberries. Halve largest ones and place in bowl. Cut remaining berries lengthwise in quarters and place in another bowl. Melt fruit spread in bowl in microwave or in small saucepan over medium heat, stirring often. Mix in lemon juice, if using, and divide hot fruit spread between two bowls of berries. Using fork, toss until fruit is coated. Spoon quartered fruit into center of pie, turning most pieces cut-side down. Arrange larger halves in circle around edge of pie with flat side facing rim of crust and pointing toward center of pie. Fill open spaces with any remaining fruit spread. Serve pie within 1 hour.

W arren B uffett ’ s B each H ouse ! Turned down by Harvard? Don’t feel bad. So was Warren Buffett. But it wasn’t a death knell to his spirit or cause him to realign his goals. Like most successful people, he forged ahead. While most people never have the epiphany that tells us what to do with our lives, Warren Buffett’s light bulb came on at the age of ten. While at lunch with his father who was a member of the New York Stock Exchange, something in their conversation lit that elusive spark that made young Buffett realize that his goal would revolve around money. By the time he was eleven and his classmates’ main concern was who would be first up to bat at the recess baseball game, Warren made his first investment in shares of Cities Service Preferred at $38 each. Never wavering from his goal, he was bringing in almost $200 a month as a teenager in the 1940s (more than his teachers were making) by working every job he could find, including door-to-door sales and cleaning cars, for more investment money. He figured out that saving money was like making money, a revelation that resulted in a lifestyle of frugality. Success inspired more success and today, often referred to as the “Oracle of Omaha,” he is the third richest person in the world. Worth $78.8 billion and only taking a base salary of $100,000 a year, Buffett’s frugality is legend. It is well known that despite his mega billions, he has continued to live in the same Omaha house he purchased in 1958 for $31,500. But few probably knew that in 1971 he also purchased a house in Laguna Beach for $150,000 - before the area was so highly developed and expensive. Today, his beach house is in an exclusive gated community that sports multiple tennis courts, swimming pool and beach volleyball courts among other amenities. He and his wife, Susan, enjoyed entertaining their friends at the house but found that there were so many visiting that he also bought a house next door and built a stairway to connect the two. After his wife died

in 2004, Warren rarely used the home and sold the connecting property in 2005. Now after updating the beach house, Buffett has put it on the market. At 3,588 square feet, the Laguna Beach house is much different than his traditional home in Omaha that is valued at about $600,000. Warren’s California home is very contemporary with six bedrooms and seven baths, big windows, sculptured ceilings and recessed lighting to spotlight the home’s modern art, a long fireplace and multiple built-ins. Two of the bedrooms have private entrances so guests can come and go without disturbing others. All rooms, including the large family room and decks, have ocean and beach views and the rock cliffs spilling onto the beach of Emerald Bay. An excellent property for enjoying family and friends with plenty to do on one of California’s most popular beaches, the house is listed by Bill Dolby of Villa Real Estate. Priced at $11 million. QUARTER PAGE COLOR This month I have terrific low prices on quarter page full color ad packages. Plus you can choose to either pre pay or pay as you go. But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business.
